The Italian superyacht builder has billed the first B.Yond model as the “greenest model ever built in its class”, following an emotional ceremony in Livorno.

Benetti staged an epic launch of the new B.Yond 37M in Livorno before describing the first model in the builder’s ‘voyager’ series as “the greenest model ever built in its class, featuring ground-breaking design and environmental friendliness”. Following a spectacular launch ceremony, the occasion concluded with a waterfront dinner for VIPs in full view of the 121ft yacht, christened Goga.

The steel-hulled, five-deck model was conceived by Paolo Vitelli, owner and President of Azimut-Benetti Group, and designed by the late Stefano Righini, who passed away last October having worked with Vitelli since the 1980s.

“I’m happy to present one of the most innovative boats ever built,” said Vitelli, who founded Azimut in 1969. “Equipped with a hybrid system for long-range, environment-friendly cruising, this is a dream come true for modern owners who want to travel around the world with their family and friends. In my imagination I saw a record-breaking boat and here it is.”

The white steel hull and aluminium superstructure are complemented by stainless-steel railings also painted white and finished with teak handrails. The hull was designed by Pierluigi Ausonio’s firm P.L.A.N.A.

Eco-friendly technology is led by the E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy that optimises on-board energy consumption according to specific usage profiles, which Benetti says results in “unprecedented CO2 and NOx emissions reductions for a yacht in this category”.

The system combines with SCR catalytic filters, a gas-control technology that uses a urea-based liquid solution, and simplifies the switching from mechanical to electric propulsion and vice-versa, so doesn’t require specialised personnel on board.

B.Yond 37M has four different operating modes including Full Electric for zero-emission navigation, so allowing entry to protected marine areas or others normally off-limits to motor yachts.

Hotel mode makes it possible to stay at anchor in silence and with zero vibrations and emissions, running the main on-board utilities from the lithium batteries, which recharge in just three hours. Using the new generation of high-energy-density batteries, the 300kW/h pack can provide up to eight hours of autonomy at anchor during the day and 12 hours at night.

Estimating an average annual use of 1,000 hours, with 400 under way and the rest at anchor, fuel consumption and CO2 can be reduced by up to 24 per cent and NOx by up to 85 per cent.

B.Yond 37M has a range of up to 8,200nm at nine knots in Eco Transfer mode, with the two diesel-generators switched off and only one propulsion engine running. This reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 16 per cent and NOx emissions by up to 80 per cent compared with traditional propulsion systems.

In terms of layout and features, the yacht’s spacious garage contains a 6.5m tender for the owner, a 4.2m rescue boat and two jet-skis. The lower deck is dedicated to service areas and includes a walk-in wine cellar and cold room – unusual features on a boat this size. There’s also a gym and a potential captain’s cabin, with each room able to be configured as an extra guest cabin.

The main deck is focused on guest accommodation, with four spacious suites and a panoramic Playroom lounge, which can alternatively be set up as the master cabin. The upper deck features the main saloon, which offers an unobstructed 360-degree view for guests.

The bridge deck can feature either the master cabin or a panoramic veranda, while forward is the helm station and captain’s cabin. The sun deck provides a dining area with a pantry and an outdoor table sheltered by a hard top. Throughout the boat, separate stairways for guests and crew ensure privacy.

The interior design by Benetti architect Mauro Izzo offers potential for customisation, while furnishings are by Giorgetti. According to the shipyard, “the fine materials include a palette of natural colours, enhanced by touches of blue provided by the fabrics and accessories, standing out against the optical white walls and echoing the colour of the sea”.

From giving a toast to your big 30 to the 30th million dollar, the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom is ready to rejoice with you.

By Joseph Low

Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom

Royal Salute is synonymous with celebrations. The Scotch whisky maker has been a mainstay in the commemoration of various milestones of the English monarch starting from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. While a 21-gun-salute paid tribute to the young monarch, in the same vein, Royal Salute created an exquisite blend using whisky from Strathisla, the oldest Scottish working distillery in the Scottish.

Royal Salute has a range of whisky expressions fitting for an occasion to commemorate milestones in life. The only requirement the brand follows is that it only uses whiskies that have been aged at least 21 years whenever a new blend is created. For the newest expression, the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom, a minimum of 30 years of whiskies are used. This tells of Royal Salute’s commitment to quality and gave rise to its informal motto, “We Begin Where Others End”.

While some of the most precious whiskies are resevered only for special days like anniversaries, birthdays and other events, these noteworthy affairs shouldn’t dictate when one should toast to rejoice and enjoy the exceptional taste of the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom.

A Toast to the Big 30

Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom

Just as the Queen has celebrated various mileposts with Royal Salute over the years, we also toast to our own achievements, and one that is close to many of us is reaching the big 30. It is said that when one crosses over 30 years old, you are believed to be more mature, responsible and wise enough to take all important decisions. For the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom, the new expression blends together a hand selection of the finest whiskies picked by Royal Salute Master Blender Sandy Hyslop. Each whisky is aged minimally for 30 Years and is sourced from Scotland.

The result of this meticulous blend is a luxurious concoction of sweet and fruity notes of juicy ripe pears, blood orange and honey. The medley of favours is reminiscent of the summer days in the highlands of Scotlands where the fruitbowl is overflowing with the freshest harvest. On the finish, the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom is smokey and lingers in the mouth.

A Toast to the 30th Million Dollars

What is the key to unlocking financial freedom? Some say earning the first million dollars is the answer, but we reckon that the 30th million would provide a greater ease of spending on luxury (given today’s rising inflation costs). The Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom is a tribute to the Ceremony of the Keys, hosted annually at Scotland’s Holyrood Palace where the keys to the City of Edinburgh are presented to the Queen. Similarly, the key, whether metaphorically or literally, symbolises the magic formula for success.

Master blender Sandy Hyslop shares, “The new blend pays tribute to one of the longest-standing ceremonies still practiced by the British Monarchy and captures the celebratory energy and classic refinement of the Ceremony of the Keys. Each whisky that was selected to create this new expression is of the utmost quality, and from the start of production through to bottling, it was a thorough process that required constant care and attention. The result is a distinguished blend and a great addition to the fantastic collection of Royal Salute high-aged Scotch whiskies.”

A Toast to the 30th Career Year

Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom

Another significant milestone in anyone’s life is the celebration of their 30th year in a career. A professional life that’s three decades long commands respect as it exemplifies one’s devotion to honing a craft. When the Queen gave her first Christmas speech, she said, “I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life,” and kept her promises throughout her remarkable reign. The Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom is a toast to the person’s exceptional commitment and the Queen’s faithfulness in the service to the people.

Presented in a hand-crafted flagon that spotlights high mastery of craftsmanship, the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key to the Kingdom’s stopper is inspired by the hilt of ancient Scottish swords. The granite-effect of the bottle accentuates the silver emblem and also provides a pleasant contrast to the presentation box, which features designs inspired by the Ceremony of the Keys like the ceremonial horns, royal roses, noble swords and regal crests.

Celebrations can happen anytime. It does not need to be confined to just milestones because memorialising a special occasion needs no particular date as every day is worth toasting.

The Adventure Area is the show’s latest themed exhibition

Monaco Yacht Show organisers are creating a new Adventure Area dedicated to adventure, exploration and leisure activities on board a superyacht. The themed exhibition will be introduced at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show from 1 as part of an ongoing revamp of the show.

The exhibition will span two sites at Port Hercule. Quai Antoine 1er will include an Adventure Area along with the existing Car Deck and Tenders & Toys exhibitions, featuring luxury vehicles, tenders and water toys in a single location. The other Adventure Area will feature about 20 tenders moored at Quai Jarlan, as in previous editions.

The Adventure Area will be split between Quai Jarlan (marked on left) Quai Antoine 1er (marked top right)

“This extended Adventure Area exhibition for all adventure and leisure activities reflects the show’s ambition to bring visitors the finest yachting experience,” MYS stated.

“Today, charter clients want to drive all-terrain vehicles to the North Pole, go on underwater excursions, take tender rides off the coast of secluded islands, enjoy tailor-made tours of historical and cultural sites in coastal destinations, discover animal species while respecting their ecosystems, and even take part in scientific field trips.”

The Adventure Area joins the Sustainability Hub and reformatted Yacht Design & Innovation Hub among new exhibition areas (click for article) as part of the show’s goal to help redefine the yachting experience and appeal to a new superyacht charter clientele.

“This new generation challenges current yachting standards. It is revolutionising the concept of luxury with its epicurean vision and desire to freely discover new experiences, one that prevails over the need to own.”

Following a successful second sea trial, the 160m Project Blue left the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen in early July and headed to the Mediterranean, where she will spend her first season with her new owners. Terence Disdale Design handled the exterior and interior design of a yacht with an overall length of 525ft and a beam of 74ft (22.5m).

Peter Lürssen, Managing Partner of Lürssen, said: “We are very proud of Blue as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owners’ requirements, guided by our core focus of expert engineering, beautiful design and being a proud market leader in developing sustainable technologies.”

Efficiency and the desire to be environmentally friendly were key drivers for the technology on board. Blue is equipped with a highly efficient diesel-electric hybrid propulsion concept developed by Lürssen’s own engineering specialists. The concept combines diesel-propulsion technology with efficient modern electric propulsion systems.

The system includes two diesel engines that drive two controllable pitch propellers through individual gearboxes. These gearboxes are equipped with PTI/PTO units that can be used for either electric propulsion (slow speeds) or for generating electrical energy to operate the vessel at higher speeds.

Blue is also equipped with an electric Azimuth pod drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts.

To generate less noise and vibration, and reduce nitrogen oxide levels, Blue is equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows the treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in ‘drinking-water quality’.

Ferretti Group has announced the sale of the first wallytender43 in Hong Kong. The unit in Hong Kong is the second in Asia, following a delivery to Singapore earlier this year (click this article) and was photographed in Victoria Harbour and around Sai Kung.

The smaller sister of the wallytender48 released in 2019, the wallytender43 debuted in late 2020 and has proven a popular model around the world.

Developed by Wally and Ferretti Group’s engineering department, the wallytender43 is built from advanced composites with carbon-fibre at Casa Wally, the new production site in Forlì, Italy.

User-friendly joystick controls simplify manoeuvring, while twin Volvo Penta diesel 380hp stern-drive engines provide a shallower draft for exploration in remote areas, with the option of 440hp engines powering the boat to over 40 knots.

Available in a variety of unique colours, the Category B runabout has the capacity to carry up to 12 people and its deck configurations can change to suit the different owner’s need.

The versatile 43-footer can be adapted as a family day boat, superyacht tender, resort shuttle and even a sailing yacht support vessel due to its ample deck space.

Drawing on Wally’s sailing heritage, the wallytender43 features laminated sail cloth across the carbon-fibre T-top, which allows plenty of natural light into the cockpit while protecting guests from the sun and reducing weight.

Stefano de Vivo, Managing Director of Wally and CCO of Ferretti Group, said: “Building on Wally’s iconic design heritage and innovation developed over nearly 30 years, our team has introduced a fresh new take in the middle part of the boat, creating the new ‘centre cockpit’ concept in a power boat.

“At the same time, we evolved our offering to satisfy the yacht owners of today and tomorrow by elevating the day-boat yachting standards, upholding Wally’s customary cool aesthetics and extraordinary performance.”

LYC’s superyacht-friendly marina soft opened in August 2020, the refurbished clubhouse opened in April 2021, and the increasingly busy Service Yard is another key aspect of the Discovery Bay facility.

Adjacent to the marina, the Service Yard is a one-stop service area equipped with a hardstand, travel lift and forklift for haul-out services, dry stack and storage lockers. The yard is also supported by a diesel fuel gas station nearby, while the contractors shelf supplies in their offices, so captains and crew no longer need to travel downtown for essentials.

Ivan Lee, Vice President of Lantau Yacht Club, said: “With Lodestone Yachts, Marine Service Asia and Next Wave opening their offices at our Service Yard, LYC is the first yacht club in Hong Kong to have such a range of service providers stationing onsite. Together we offer yacht owners strong expertise and comprehensive yacht services, and are proud to gradually make LYC a superyacht hub and yachting activity centre in Hong Kong.

“With yacht industry experts and partners gradually forming a network here, LYC is looking forward to more collaborations. It’s our aim to build a yachting community to promote a premium yachting lifestyle for enthusiasts. More exclusive programmes for members, boat shows, and events are in the pipeline.”

The ILIAD 62 allows for either traditional davits fitted to her transom or a transom-lift platform for launching the tender and use as a dive platform. An optional flybridge-mounted crane can also be fitted to lift. Safety is prioritised with clutter-free decks, wide walkways and a full composite-built stairwell with ergonomic handrails to the flybridge.

Designed by Catana Group boss Olivier Poncin with an interior by Lasta Design Studio, the new Bali 4.4 rounds out the French builder’s modern series of sailing catamarans, which range from the 40ft Catspace Sail and 4.2 to the larger 4.6, 4.8 and 5.4 models. By Emmanuel Van Deth.

The Bali 4.4 had her world premiere at this year’s International Multihull Show

With an overall length topping 44ft and a beam over 24ft, the new Bali 4.4 is in some ways a replacement for the 4.3 but more for the 4.5, the very first model in the Bali range. Aboard this catamaran, which is more than ever dedicated to comfort and family vacations, all the attributes of the Bali DNA are to be found – tilting door, opening side bay windows, rigid foredeck and large chilled capacity.

As a bonus, with the size of this model being closer to the 4.6 than the 4.2 among the current Bali range, there’s a forward door, a flybridge and aft platform. Acting as the rear façade of the deckhouse, the large ‘Bali door’ on the 4.4 is 11ft 6in across and 6ft 3in high – and opens electrically in under 25 seconds. The entire saloon is then open to the rear, while the door at the front leads to the foredeck.

The 4.4 fills out Bali’s modern range of six sailing models

Although the deck layout has been designed for relaxation with a maximum area of rigid deck space due to the integral foredeck and the high-low platform that extends to the sugarscoops, it remains functional, with fluid circulation everywhere. Furthermore, the natural ventilation is particularly effective – or at least it would be in warm weather.

Instead, we tested this new Bali in La Rochelle in sub-zero temperatures, which meant much of the time we didn’t enjoy the ‘open space’ mode, which is one of the big attractions of every Bali model. At sea, we kept everything closed, entering the boat via the door within the Bali door, yet the winter configuration proved very homely as the extra-large saloon and its big windows create a warm environment.

Like all Bali models, the 4.4 features a solid foredeck that expands social space

Underfoot, the composite sandwich is very stiff, proof of careful and generously sampled construction. Up front, the hard deck is entirely covered with sunbeds. It looks good and provides an immense amount of social space, although opening the lockers is more complicated with all the covers. The aft cockpit is home to a large, almost 9ft-wide bench seat, forward of the sugarscoops and the hydraulic platform.

SUITABLE FOR ALL SEASONS

We entered the Chenal des Minimes channel under engine, our model featuring the optional twin 57hp Yanmars. It was immediately apparent that the motors propel the boat with little effort, given we were up to about 7 knots at 2,150rpm aided only a little by the northeast wind, as we hardly noticed any difference when we turned and headed into it.

Bali, 4.4, sailing, catamaran, multihull, show, La Grande Motte, Olivier Poncin, Catana Group, Lasta Design Studio, Marennes d’Oléron, Ile d’Aix

Up on the flybridge, accessible from both sides, manoeuvring is simple: everything happens from the helm station, which is offset to port and neighbours a raised L-shaped sofa to starboard. Aft is a lounging area surrounded by padded rails, while the designers wanted to limit the height of the boom. In fact, the lazy bag is easily accessible, and the mainsail area is larger.

Despite the cold, the halyards and sheets manage to run over their respective sheaves, round the winches and through the clutches. As soon as the mainsail was hoisted and the Code 0 unfurled, we trimmed the traveller and the sheets. With the wind oscillating between 8-15 knots on the beam, our boat speed was 7-8 knots with a few peaks at 9 knots during little gusts.

The Bali door raises electronically to connect the cockpit and saloon

When the main is set just right, you can clearly feel the Bali 4.4 is just waiting to be sailed. The Code 0, promoted by the yard, brings an obvious bonus up to about 70° off the wind. It won’t go higher because the sheeting angle logically passes outside the shrouds. To get closer to the wind, we rolled up the Code 0 and unfurled the self-tacking solent. This reduces the headsail area from 796sqft to 452sqft.

Despite a sail-area-to-weight ratio of 8.68sqm/t, which is more favourable than the 7.07 of the Bali 4.2, the difference in punch is clearly felt. When we came up to 50/55° off the true wind, boat speed barely exceeded 5 knots, leeway was noticeable, and the sail trim needed to be quite precise. In such conditions, not ideal for relying purely on sail, one or two of the engines can be used to help you maintain course.

OPEN SPACE IN AND OUT

During most of our day of sailing, we stayed warm inside, the perfect view over the water allowing us to keep a close watch and the autopilot remote control did the rest. Obviously, some changes in angle of the wind coming off the coast did force some of the crew up on to the flybridge to make adjustments.

The saloon has over 7ft of headroom in areas and the option of two lounge chairs to starboard

For the rest, we were able to taste oysters – the famous Marennes d’Oléron, of course – while making good speed towards the island of Ile-d’Aix. The level of comfort inside the saloon is enhanced by its generous headroom, which reaches up to 7ft 3in in places. Far from being exclusively reserved for tropical or summer use, the Bali ‘open space’ concept shows it’s also comfortable in less favourable climates.

The galley features a large L-shaped work surface complemented by a sideboard and a plus-sized fridge-freezer that is another Bali standard. The recess for the helm station is integrated into the whole, although the table in this area can be bigger on the four-cabin charter version. Forward, to starboard, a chart table is fitted.

The galley to port offers storage, cooking appliances, sinks and countertop space on three sides

The ‘Elegance’ finish on our test boat included upgraded upholstery, armrests, two club chairs and integrated bar and leather handles for the storage spaces, all nice touches on a model that featured the three-cabin owner’s layout downstairs.

AT HOME IN THE HULLS

The port hull is entirely dedicated to the owner and is accessed down five steps. The master suite includes a big double bed configured as an island bed, a dressing table/desk, a huge bathroom, large windows in the hull, two opening portlights, and numerous storage spaces. It has it all.

Bali, 4.4, sailing, catamaran, multihull, show, La Grande Motte, Olivier Poncin, Catana Group, Lasta Design Studio, Marennes d’Oléron, Ile d’Aix

In the owner’s version, the master suite occupies most of the port hull

The companionway to the starboard hull has a sturdy handrail, which is very useful in choppy seas. The aft en-suite cabin has the same dimensions as on the port side, with a minimum headroom of 6ft 5in.

The 4ft 9in-wide bed in the forward en-suite cabin is a little narrower than at the stern and much higher, lying almost 3ft above the floor as opposed to just under 2ft in the aft cabin. Both rooms benefit from large hull windows, great ventilation and plenty of storage space. In fact, all three cabins are plus points.

Like most Bali models, the 4.4 is designed for boaters who want a platform for enjoying life on the water, a floating home that can be moved from anchorage to anchorage, and even from one ocean to another.

Colin Dawson: Are you covered for yard time?

Colin Dawson: Are you covered for yard time?

In a Column for Yacht Style, yacht insurance specialist Colin Dawson outlines what to consider ahead of yard work, emphasising that preparation is key to keeping insurers onside.

Colin Dawson, yard time, yacht, motor, hot work, insurance, insurers, Ship Repairers Liability, The George Group, Expat Marine

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

All yachts will visit a yard, often each year. However, how many realise it’s important to have clearance from insurers before doing so? Most policies will allow for normal maintenance to be performed without the need to advise insurers, but not all. And how far can one go while still calling work ‘normal maintenance’?

Nearly all policies will require permission to be sought prior to agreeing to continue cover for anything that goes beyond normal maintenance and certainly in the event of any hot work. Different insurers will require varying levels of information, but where yard bookings can be difficult and need to be secured quite far in advance, it’s best to do your homework prior to singing a contract.

In my years as a specialist insurance broker for yachts, I have seen incredibly well prepared programmes. Recently in New Zealand, the captain discussed the work to be done with the yard well in advance, sought a yard with a fine reputation and a good level of Ship Repairers Liability (SRL) cover in place, and had a plan ready before the yacht entered the yard. Of course, there are also less well prepared programmes. In any case, try to remember the following:

1. Make sure the yard in question carries sufficient SRL cover. I would recommend at least the value of the yacht, but depending on the value, insurers may be flexible. I have known yards try to tell their clients they cannot get the cover over a certain amount. If the yard has a good reputation and a good loss record, this isn’t true and is generally because they don’t wish to spend the premium.

2. Make sure the yard’s SRL cover spans the whole period the yacht is there.

3. Discuss with the yard any subcontractors it may use and make sure the yard’s insurance includes them.

4.If intending to appoint your own subcontractors, check with the yard that this is allowed. If so, ensure these subcontractors have their own cover. Often a yard will require this.

5. Ask around, not just fellow captains but also your insurer, to ascertain the reputation of the yard.

6. Discuss with the yard its emergency procedures, especially fire and windstorm.

7.Discuss with the yard its security measures.

8. Discuss the project with your crew. For example, how will loose items on board be protected?

9. Try to get a slot away from a yacht that is having hot work and, if you can, away from one being repainted.

10. Obtain a full works list.

11. Most people should be aware that they can’t sign a waiver allowing a yard to back out of a claim against them. This is often specified in the yacht’s insurance policy. However, most waivers are hidden in the very small print and are couched in a language hiding the fact that they’re either partial or complete waivers. A better-quality yard will not look to hide such things or even have them. I once had a contract sent to me by a captain firmly telling me that he had not signed a waiver. On the contract, it was stated that terms and conditions were overleaf, but it had been scanned and sent without any of the ‘overleaf’ information appearing. The captain had blindly signed what he had been sent, missing the fact that many conditions including the waiver were on the part he hadn’t seen.

12. Make sure plans are made well in advance. Often an insurance broker is advised at 5pm on a Friday that a yacht is to be lifted the following day and needs to have an insurer’s permission. Usually this is accompanied by incomplete documentation with gaps in what insurers will require to note their agreement. (Of course, when insurers revert with queries, it’s always their fault!) If this is done in advance, there’s time to ensure all paperwork is correct to make it easy for insurers to agree, making them more disposed to being flexible if the need arises.

It’s worth remembering that last-minute advice, poorly presented requests and yachts looking to enter yards that are cutting corners or not looking after the best interests of the yacht owner raise other concerns with insurers. We are in a difficult yacht-insurance market and insurers have less capacity to offer, so are pickier with the risks they’re prepared to underwrite, and on what terms.

They’re being less flexible and are far more wary of risk than they were in the ‘soft’ market for so many years. One concern insurers have is if a yacht cuts corners with a visit to a yard, it’s likely to be cutting corners in other areas, leading to increased risk and therefore the likelihood of a claim. Signs this is happening are plain to see.

It should be remembered that it is an owner’s responsibility to do all he can to prevent a loss to insurers, or minimise one should an accident arise. If this is not done, insurers can query the amount they’re liable for in a claim. If you’re in any doubt at all, seek advice from your insurance broker – and remember the 5 P’s!
