The Navetta 75 succeeds the Navetta 73 as the yard’s flagship

Absolute is marking its 20th anniversary by introducing the Navetta 75, a new flagship that the inland builder plans to debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11. Notable features include modular furniture on the terrace cockpit and flybridge, as seen on the 60 Fly that debuted at Cannes last year and the 56 Fly set to premiere at this year’s edition with the Navetta 75.

The Navetta 75’s long flybridge occupies about two-thirds of its total length and can be accessed by stairs from both the cockpit and the lower helm. Deck plans show an aft area for loose furniture such as sunbeds, a large lounging area slightly forward and a forward section dedicated to a lengthways dining table plus a single-seat helm station and companion seating to starboard.

The main-deck saloon includes the main lounge aft and a dining table athwartships, while the helm station is in a raised position. Two more mooring stations are available in strategic positions. The foredeck provides another outdoor social area and has a C-shaped sofa with an adjustable table and a quadruple sunpad with adjustable backrest.

On the lower deck, the yard’s signature features include the forward owner’s cabin in the bow, which has private access and is on a higher level than the rest of the lower deck. Guest cabins comprise a full-beam VIP midships, an en-suite double to port and a twin plus day head to starboard. The aft crew quarters can be accessed from the cockpit and feature up to three beds, a bathroom and private galley.

Rolex and its Timeless Connection to the Cinema

Rolex watches have played their own role on the wrists of legendary characters in numerous films, including multiple Oscar-winning masterpieces. And today, by its support of artistic and technical excellence in filmmaking, Rolex itself has become an acting participant in its own right.

By Andreas Arphan

Rolex, Oscar

For over a century, Rolex has accompanied explorers and achievers around the world. Today, the brand is present at the most prestigious events in golf, sailing, tennis, motor sport, and at equestrian tournaments while also making a unique and lasting contribution to global arts and culture, science and exploration.

One of the key partnerships within the arts and culture space is with the world of Cinema. They both share a similar vision: creating masterpieces. For one, masterpieces of timekeeping; for the other, cinematic masterpieces. On the surface, it seems hardly comparable, watches and films being two entirely dissimilar products. However, Rolex has been a feature of the film industry for decades.

Gabriel Byrne wearing RolexGabriel Byrne in The Usual Suspects (1995)

Film is a very visual medium, and the smallest detail on screen could alter the whole meaning of a shot. When an actor chooses to wear a Rolex watch, its presence on their wrist adds information to the plot. The personal effect lends the character a possible history, past and destiny. It reveals something of the temperament, taste, values, aspirations and mindset of the person who wears it. Famous examples would be the various versions of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner worn by Sean Connery and Roger Moore in Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun; a gold Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date by Bill Paxton in Titanic; an Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master accessorising Marlon Brando’s stellar performance in Apocalypse Now; and Paul Newman confidently wearing an Oyster Perpetual Datejust in The Color of Money (which was later handled by Tom Cruise).

Decade after decade, a growing cast of celebrities would wear a Rolex onscreen. As their watch of choice, the greatest actors and directors would, in turn, reflect on the watch and bestow it with their own charisma and flair. But after being a guest star on their wrist, both in front and behind the camera, Rolex would soon take on a starring role.

In 2017, Rolex cements its longstanding association with the film industry by entering a formal partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, becoming the Proud Sponsor of the Oscars, and Exclusive Sponsor of the Governors Awards.

The highlight of the film season is the Oscars, and it begins with the Governors Awards which honour great names of cinema and are presented in recognition of a lifetime of remarkable achievements.

This is followed by the Oscars ceremony which celebrates inspiration and emotion as well as the production process, the technical expertise and all else that goes into the making of a film. To borrow a favourite expression of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, it is an ode to “a work done handsomely”. Cinema is at once an art, a science and an industry, and the Oscars ceremony shines a light on every one of its facets. Since 2016 Rolex has designed and hosted the Greenroom for the Academy Awards as a convivial space where nominees and presenters gather before and after stepping onto the stage. The inspiration for this year’s theme comes from Hollywood and its major studios. Decorative wall panels in an Art Deco style arrange elements from Rolex watches into mosaics to reproduce the skyline of cinema’s home, Los Angeles.

Rolex encourages the preservation and transmission of the cinematic arts, promotes excellence and celebrates progress with its partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the institution, the awards and the museum in Los Angeles), by accompanying living legends as well as budding talents through its Testimonees (Martin Scorsese and James Cameron), and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

Rolex, Hollywood

The brand became a Founding Supporter of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which opened its doors on 30 September 2021 in Los Angeles. The first of its kind in the United States, the Museum is devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking. Among its 50,000 square feet of galleries is the Rolex Gallery, a permanent exhibit featuring “Stories of Cinema”, described as “a three-floor exhibition presenting the diverse, international, and complex stories of moviemakers and the works they create”. One of the exhibits in the Rolex Gallery is Paul Newman’s Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward when he embarked on a race car career in 1969. The watch is inscribed with the phrase ‘DRIVE CAREFULLY ME’ and is now owned by a private collector.

James Cameron. Image: Rolex

Exemplifying the shared qualities and values of Rolex and the film industry, both Rolex Testimonees and exceptional filmmakers James Cameron and Martin Scorsese represent the industry at its best, crafting masterpieces. James Cameron has helmed classics such as The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009); and Scorsese being behind Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), and The Departed (2006).

Beyond producing Oscar-winning films, Scorsese pays tribute to filmmaking acclaimed auteurs while maintaining a creative dialogue with younger generations through artistic collaborations and played the role of a mentor in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Launched in 2002, this initiative has paired mentors and protégés in dance, film, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, architecture and an open category covering interdisciplinary pursuits. Out of the 58 mentor and protégé pairs established, eight were from film. As part of his efforts to perpetuate cinematic arts, Scorsese is also behind The Film Foundation which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of world cinema, an endeavour that has the support of Rolex.

Martin Scorsese. Image: Rolex

So, what is a masterpiece? Whether a masterpiece of timekeeping, or a masterpiece of cinema — such as the films by James Cameron and Martin Scorsese — a masterpiece is something crafted lovingly and meticulously to be the best. It is the power to bring history to life and to explore every possible future, both collective and individual. Like a Rolex watch, cinema is ingrained with our memories and aspirations. It is witness to our ambitions and to our determination to overcome any obstacle we may find along our way. More than simply 24 frames per second, or 24 hours within a day, it embodies the very essence of our emotions.

The popularity of multihulls in Asia-Pacific waters shows no sign of waning, and regional specialist Multihull Solutions has further expanded its operations to cater for continued demand. By Bruce Maxwell.

Multihull Solutions recently opened new sales centres in Singapore and Thailand to respond to the significant increase in enquiries and orders across its range of new and pre-owned sail and power multihulls.

Located in the world-renowned ONE°15 Marina in Sentosa Cove, the new Singapore Sales Centre is ideally situated to meet the needs of regional buyers in the market for the world’s finest brands of cruising multihulls, including Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, ILIAD Catamarans, NEEL Trimarans and Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts.

There are also now three Sales Centres throughout Phuket, at the Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven Marina and Ao Po Grand Marina, handling a solid stream of clients looking to purchase or sell in this renowned cruising ground.

Paul Stamp, General Manager of Multihull Solutions Asia, said it was an incredibly exciting time for the industry with several factors driving the surge in demand for cruising cats and tris.

“We’ve seen the popularity of multihulls steadily increase over the past 10 years due to the significant improvements in construction, design and performance across ranges offered by leading shipyardssuch as Fountaine Pajot. This demand has been intensified during the covid pandemic as people are looking to escape the city and rediscover freedom on the water,” Stamp said.

“Cruising multihulls are the perfect platform for seasoned yachties and inexperienced boaties alike to shake off the myriad restrictions and enjoy space, safety and stability at sea, while not forsaking any of the comforts of home.”

This year sees a swag of Multihull Solutions’ represented boats nominated for the world’s most prestigious industry awards, including SAIL’s Best Boat Award, Multihull World’s Multihull of the Year, and European Yacht of the Year.

Among the nominees are Fountaine Pajot’s Samana 59, Isla 40 and MY4.S. NEEL Trimarans is also strongly represented with the NEEL 43 and LEEN 56, while ILIAD Catamarans has turned heads with its upcoming ILIAD 60 nominated for Multihull of the Year. Stamp said it wasn’t just catamarans enjoying the attention from buyers, with cruising trimarans steadily increasing in demand.

“Models such as the new NEEL 43, just landed in Australia, are capturing the imagination of clients seeking a boat that has ample comfort and space while delivering scintillating performance,” he said.

“This latest model by the acclaimed French shipyard has revolutionised the concept of onboard living with its innovative loft design, and the compact tri combines the benefits of a multihull’s space and stability with a monohull’s excellent windward performance and impressive speed.”

The Neel 47 trimaran is another Multihull Solutions option

The NEEL 43 in Australia is now for sale and has been fitted to a very high specification, including performance carbon rigging, removeable cockpit and bimini clears, air conditioning, water maker and remote tender-lift system.

Greg Boller, Multihull Solutions’ Sales and Business Development Manager, said there has been intense interest in the NEEL 43 from Asia-Pacific buyers.

“We’ve been fielding solid enquiries on this new model ever since the shipyard unveiled its early plans. We’re excited to finally have the boat in Australia and don’t expect it to be long before this particular vessel is sold,” Boller said.

Rapido Trimarans is another shipyard making waves with their innovative folding trimarans and their 60ft model that has been hailed as the world’s fastest cruising tri.

“It’s another example of a trimaran that delivers great comfort and luxury, but defies expectation when it comes to performance,” Boller said.

ILIAD Catamarans continues to be one of Multihull Solutions’ strongest performers with considerable interest from Asia-Pacific, European and US buyers in the range of semi-custom, long-range motor yachts.

ILIAD 70 power cat off the Australian coast

Since the brand’s launch in 2019, the company has been flooded with orders for its ILIAD 50 and ILIAD 70, as well as the new ILIAD 60, which is due to arrive in Australia in mid 2022.

The design for the innovative new ILIAD 53S has also just been unveiled to the excitement of cruisers looking for a sporty sedan-style power catamaran that delivers exceptional range and contemporary style.

Multihull Solutions is enjoying its highest sales in the company’s history with forward orders across its range of new yachts stretching into 2024. Patrick Gilot, the company’s brokerage manager, said pre-owned yacht sales are also at a record high, with listings selling before or as soon as they hit the market.

“The current situation, where demand is exceeding supply, is also creating an environment where people are exploring options outside of their original plans. Those who were in the market for a specific sailing catamaran are now considering other models because of the limited supply,” Gilot said.

“We are also seeing people expand their criteria to consider power over sail, or trimarans over cats. It’s certainly an exciting time for the marine industry with such a significant increase in interest, which is due to a number of factors. The prolonged period of lockdowns and a sense of fatigue with living through this pandemic has seen many people want to escape the confines of home and enjoy the freedom of life on the water.

Multihull Solutions’ Asia-Pacific team has great depth of experience with the top-range multihulls it sells and supports

“The inability to easily travel and take traditional holidays has also seen the emergence of new clients, many of whom have never sailed before but are now keen to embrace the cruising lifestyle. This environment has also created movement in the sellers’ market with people realising it’s the perfect time to list the boat they no longer use or sell it because they want to upgrade.”

Multihull Solutions’ brokerage division has been kept busy matching buyers to new listings, with most boats selling before they have a chance to be publicly advertised.

“We’re certainly run off our feet, but it’s a great problem to have,” Gilot said. “We have a very comprehensive programme for pre-owned sales and enjoy being able to take the stress out of listing and selling for our clients. Over the past two years, we’ve sold an unprecedented number of pre-owned yachts and seen a marked shift in the movement of these vessels throughout the Asia-Pacific.

“Clients are realising it is not a big deal to purchase a yacht through us that is located in a different state or country, as we are very experienced in arranging delivery crews or shipping to any port in the world, in addition to managing all of the sea trial, survey, tax and financial factors to make it a seamless and enjoyable process.”

The company is looking forward to a resumption of industry events in 2022 and has plans to have a presence at a variety of upcoming boat shows including the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Sydney International Boat Show, Cannes Yachting Festival and Nautic Paris Boat Show. It regularly attends most Asian events.

With owners spending more on superyachts and charter bookings increasing, brokerage house Fraser looks at trends at the start of 2022.

The total asking price of all superyachts sold in Q1 was €1,200 million (about US$1,260 million), the highest figure for the January-March period since records began, Fraser announced in its latest contribution to Yacht Style (Issue 65).

Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser, said: “Although the world is living through uncertain times, it’s positive to see that yacht sales and charters in the first quarter of this year were up on the same period a year ago.

Superyacht, Fraser, Yacht Style, sales, asking price, average, total, charter, record

“Although the total number of yachts sold is a little lower than it was in 2021 for the same period (158 in 2022 compared to 205 in 2021), the average asking price has jumped sharply – by almost €2 million per yacht.

Fraser also revealed that charter increased compared to 2021 as travel restrictions eased in popular charter locations. In Q1, Fraser’s own charter retail brokers signed 74% more charters than they did in Q1 of 2021 and charter management fleet bookings rocketed by 160%.

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has announced the new ICOMIA Asia Working Group (IAWG). A key aim for the new group is to ‘achieve traction on common issues relating to regional cooperation, such as border agreements and customs, immigration, and quarantine procedures (CIQP)’.

Previous efforts to unite national boating associations in the region include the Asia Boating Dialogue, which was last held in 2020 as a two-part webinar series and led by the Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA) and Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA), with the support of ICOMIA.

The mission of the IAWG includes providing international leadership and guidance on issues concerning the development of the leisure marine industry through discussion, research and networking.

Lawrence Chow, Chair of ICOMIA Asia Working Group, said: “The formation of the IAWG marks the strong potential of growth for the boating industry in Asia. ICOMIA Members will now have access to key insights and developments in Asia. In parallel, the IAWG would be an ideal platform to spread the experience gathered from the various ICOMIA committees to emerging markets in Asia, inspiring different markets to set up their own marine industry associations in the future.”

The IAWG is currently working on the following projects:

  • Promoting the International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) licences in Asia to boost the charter industry in the region.
  • Grow Boating – implementing the latest grow boating campaigns and strategies in Asia.
  • Promoting the Regulatory Reference Guide (RRG), which provides information on rules and regulations affecting the recreational marine industry around the globe.

Current IAWG members include HKBIA, SBIA, Japan Marine Industry Association, Hainan Marine Trade Exchange Service Centre (HNMTES), Korea International Boat Show, Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute in Sri Lanka, Taiwan Yacht Industry Association and Thai Yachting Business Association. All ICOMIA members with an interest in Asia are welcome to join.

Princess debuted the Y72 at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival

Boat Lagoon Yachting has announced that the first Princess Y72 in Southeast Asia is scheduled to arrive in Singapore in the third quarter of 2022. The smallest model in the British builder’s Y Class of large flybridge motor yachts, the four-cabin Y72 is among the newest Princess models, having had her world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September.

Featuring an overall length of 74ft 9in and a beam of almost 18ft, the Y72 has been designed with Olesinski, the builder’s long-time partner for naval architecture, and Italian design house Pininfarina. The yacht is fitted with twin MAN V12-1650 diesel engines and has a top speed of 32-34 knots.

The unit for Southeast Asia has been specified for the region and features tropical-strength air-conditioning, a slatted flybridge hardtop, ONAN generator, teak decking and stabilisers. The yacht will have a white hull and an interior finished in silver oak.

Y72 features include a large high-low bathing platform that can carry a 500kg tender, while stairs lead to an aft cockpit with a dining table and a C-shaped sofa featuring a two-tone, stainless steel-trimmed headline.

The interior has an aft galley to port and dining area to starboard that features a fitted L-shaped sofa and a folding table, with loose stools completing the seating. Massive side windows continue forward to the saloon, which has a large C-shaped sofa and a coffee table on the starboard side, aft of the raised twin-seat helm station. On the port side are bar stools by the galley countertop and a long sofa, plus a raised L-shaped sofa forward.

Aft of this is a curved staircase leading to the full-beam owner’s suite midships, which has a forward facing double bed. To starboard is a sofa and storage, while to port is a desk cum vanity table and an aft walk-in dressing room that leads to the bathroom with twin sinks and large rain shower.

The foredeck has a C-shaped sofa and an island sunpad with an adjustable backrest. The Y72 also benefits from a multi-zone Naim audio system with multi-streaming capability and a dedicated app.

The 53m, 499GT vessel will be part of Anthony Hsieh’s sport fishing fleet and primarily based in the Indian and Pacific oceans.

YS 5301 will be delivered to Anthony Hsieh in 2023

Damen Yachting has sold the first unit of its YS 53 series to Anthony Hsieh, who will use it for sport fishing primarily in the Indian and Pacific oceans as part of his Bad Company fleet. The 175-footer from the Dutch builder’s Yacht Support range will be delivered in 2023.

YS 5301 will have a top speed of 19 knots and be fully IMO Tier III compliant, reducing harmful emissions by 70 per cent for full range operations.

The yacht will be the hub of Hsieh’s extensive fishing programme that will incorporate fishing in relatively unchartered waters and support marine conservation projects. It will be equipped with a 15-tonne deck crane, a 43ft Release Game boat and a 32ft Blackfin that was Hsieh’s first game fishing boat purchase more than 30 years ago and has recently been repurchased and refurbished.

“No one has ever done what we’re planning to do with the 5301 and I think this will set a whole new tier of adventure for future sportsmen to explore,” said Hsieh, founder of US-based mortgage lender loanDepot.

My hope is that this ambitious programme will inspire a whole new generation of sportsmen to create their own programmes. It will be good for the sport, yachting and the fishing industries.”

Jan van Hogerwou, Damen Yachting’s Commercial Executive, worked closely with Neil Emmott from Superyacht Sales and Charter in Fort Lauderdale on behalf of Hsieh throughout the sale of YS 5301.

“This is one of the most exciting projects we have worked on. Not only is this the first of our new YS 53 range but this is also the first Yacht Support we have built that will be used exclusively as part of a sport fishing fleet and programme,” Van Hogerwou said.

“Hsieh’s unique vision and the mission he has planned for this all-new Yacht Support is very inspiring and we are looking forward to the next 12 months and getting her ready to head out with the rest of his fleet.”

The programme’s Atlantic operations are covered by the 46m YS 4508 Yacht Support, Bad Company Support. Featuring a 33ft Game boat on board, the vessel was original built and delivered by Damen Yachting in 2019 and was sold and joined the Bad Company fleet in 2021.

Introduced to the market in February, the YS 53 range features exterior and interior design, and naval architecture by Damen Yachting, and marks a shift in the builder’s Yacht Support approach. Highly flexible and customisable, the new design represents the next generation of Yacht Support vessels designed from scratch specifically for the yachting market and encompassing experience from almost 20 Yacht Support vessels built and sold over the last decade.

Welcome by Wade Pearce of Singapore Marine Guide

Pearce and YACHT STYLE’S Olivier Burlot made speeches, while attending companies included Azimut Yachts Singapore, Ferretti Group Asia Pacific, Benetti Asia, Simpson Marine, Hong Seh Yachting, Boat Lagoon Yachting, Asia Pacific Superyachts, Asia Superyacht Development, ONE°15 Marina and Marina at Keppel Bay.

Pearce said he hoped the monthly gathering would not only link the various sectors within the pleasure boating industry but also help create more dialogue with government departments.

“The Singapore boating community has developed exponentially over the past two years as Covid restrictions drove people to get back into boating or start. Although there are more boats in the marinas and more people on the water, the industry is hampered by a lack of industry leadership, clear communication and investment in parts and service. This is needed to develop new talent, set industry standards and ensure a business ecosystem for the boating community,” Pearce said.

“When it comes to regulation, training and service for the boating industry, we’re currently unable to access the various government agencies that manage port waters, immigration, manpower and land, which continues to hamper the viability of the industry.

“With Grow Boating Singapore, we hope this will encourage a collective voice and fair explanation of current industry issues, so the Singapore Boating Industry Association or other boating associations can approach the relevant government agencies and other industry bodies with a collective voice to be involved in policy, safety, promotion and communications.”

Dutch pioneer U-Boat Worx has revealed its new flagship, designed to offer “the most high-end subsea experience”.

U-Boat Worx, a leader in commercial and private multi-passenger submarine operations, has launched its Nexus series of submersibles, depth-rated to 200m and available in two different hull-sizes for seven and eight people, or nine if two are children.

Nexus offers an immersive connection due to its fully transparent elliptical pressure hull, an increased internal volume per occupant and U-Boat Worx’ signature revolving seating arrangement.

U-Boat Worx, Nexus, Cruise Sub, submersible, Dutch

In its regular configuration, the Nexus features 900-914 litres of interior space per adult, identical to the popular Cruise Sub 7. The seating arrangement consists of six luxury full-size business-class seats for adults, with three on each side of the pilot.

The Nexus 8 has a user-configurable seat for a guest, scientist or expedition leader and can be converted to a comfortable bench that seats two children (up to the age of 12), for a total of nine occupants.

U-Boat Worx, Nexus, Cruise Sub, submersible, Dutch

“U-Boat Worx has poured its vast accumulation of experience, fresh ideas and technical developments into the Nexus to offer the most high-end subsea experience,” the company stated. “The layout gives passengers more leg room, greater ceiling height and a larger amount of personal space than found on any other submersible in the industry.”

The company also describes the Nexus as “the fastest multi-passenger submarine on the market”, with its industry-leading battery capacity powering eight thrusters. The model has also been designed for towing, often used for long-distance mobilisation.

U-Boat Worx, Nexus, Cruise Sub, submersible, Dutch

Another design achievement is the Nexus’ ability to move in any direction, as proven in the Cruise Sub series. In addition to forward, reverse, up and down, the submersible can also move laterally, which increases the submersible’s object approach and dive efficiency, as well as passenger views and pilot freedom.

To improve access, the Nexus is designed to be stable yet manoeuvrable on the surface. A 90cm freeboard, handrails, grips and steps help boarding, while both the Nexus and Cruise Subs provide enough deck space to hold all occupants. The Nexus is also equipped with the industry’s largest-diameter hatch, which further assists boarding, while an elevator is an option.
