Six For The Summer: Cool Cabriolets To Look Forward To

Six For The Summer: Cool Cabriolets To Look Forward To

SHARE

Here are 6 sexy cabriolets that are guaranteed to amplify your sensory experience while driving.

By Sheldon Trollope

One of life’s greatest pleasures is an open-top drive in a cabriolet on a warm, balmy sunset. There’s nothing like the smell of sea salt when driving along the coast or the petrichor of the forest, freshly washed by the rain just moments before.

Driving top down also makes for a heightened sensory experience. The driver hears the engine and exhaust more clearly, and the smell of hot brakes and tyres from a spirited drive stirs the emotions to a new level.

If you’re lucky enough to be behind the wheel of an open cabriolet on these occasions, you can literally feel the stress melt away and a smile grow on your face. It has been said, however, that the most successful people make their own luck. So to prepare you for these situations, here are six of the latest cabriolets that are guaranteed to make your day. Every day.

Maserati MC-20 Cielo

The newest in this group is the Maserati MC-20 Cielo. Hot on the heels of the coupé that made its debut last year, the Cielo is in fact more of a targa than an outright convertible. Instead of a folding fabric or metal top, this Maserati is fitted with a state-of-the-art electrochromic glass roof panel. At a touch of a button on the central screen, the top can be transformed from clear to opaque. Best-in-class thermal insulation promises to keep heat Sun’s heat at bay while it takes just a press of a button and 12 seconds to electrically remove the top.

Impressively, the MC-20 Cielo weighs just 65kg more than the coupe, which is insignificant for the revolutionary Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine to overcome. With 630hp at the driver’s disposal, the MC-20 Cielo is capable of reaching over 320km/h and needs only three seconds to reach 100km/h from a standstill. Just as well then, that among the various drive modes available to optimize the car’s handling dynamics, WET Mode is also there for reassuring control when the heavens open.

Bentley Continental GT V8 Convertible

The perfect accompaniment to a cabriolet is an engine that sings. One of the best-sounding motors that money can buy is a high-revving V8 which incidentally, can be fund under the bonnet of the Bentley Continental GT V8 Convertible

.

Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine produces a characterful V8 burble through its stylish quad exhaust pipes, while offering better efficiency for a Touring range of over 800km. All in unbeatable comfort for effortlessly covering long distances.

While a top speed of 318km/h and the ability to reach 100km/h from a standstill in four seconds, the Bentley Drive Dynamics selector allows the full breadth of performance, from class-leading refinement and comfort to focussed handling in Sport mode.

In addition, the Active All-Wheel Drive System, enables the use of rear-wheel drive as much as possible during normal driving for optimum efficiency and dynamic performance.

BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive

Another brand that is increasing the availability of all-wheel drive in its model range is BMW M. This performance division of BMW is known for building some of the most uncompromising performance cars of out time.

Most recently, the M4 is available in Convertible guise. Paired with all-wheel drive, the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive, as it is properly called, breaks new ground for the M sub-brand. Just as well since its 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder in-line twin-turbocharged engine makes 510hp.

Reverting back to a fabric folding roof after a long hiatus also means adding the convenience of opening or closing the roof on the move at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Audi R8 Spyder V10 performance RWD

The Audi R8 has matured into something of a “thinking man’s” supercar. It is well-executed; stylish, handles beautifully and has a track record of reliability that is the envy of many exotic brands.

It also offers some pedigree, too. By way of the Lamborghini Huracan with which it shares its chassis and that fabulous V10 engine! Additionally, the Audi R8 Spyder V10 performance RWD offers a greater degree of purity with a rear wheel drive layout that saves weight as well as puts the driver firmly in control. With great power, comes great responsibility indeed.

Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

No list of sports cars, open-topped or otherwise, would be complete without the Porsche 911. In this case, the latest 992-generation models are so complete that even the ‘entry’ model is easily capable of delivering all the useable performance anyone could possibly need. Look further up the price list and the Stuttgart carmaker is only too happy to oblige with even more potent versions of its iconic sports car.

The 385hp output of the 911 Carrera Cabriolet perfectly subscribes to the brand’s philosophy of Porsche Intelligent Performance. In the real world, stratospheric power outputs only translate to spending more time braking for the next corner. The driver of this 911 Carrera however, would be able to spend more time, savouring the nuances of the power band and the characteristic engine notes that come with every increment of revs. All the better that this is done with the top down…

Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Black Convertible

Speaking of intelligent performance, one of the most beautiful cars in this group is also the most efficient. Powered by a 300hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine, it generates maximum torque from just 1,500rpm. All this while delivering the expected sports car acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in only 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

The new R-Dynamic Black variants of the F-Type take the purity and presence of its sports car ethos to a new level. For starters, the 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels known as ‘Style 5039’ are not available on any other model in the range.

Inside, more quality detailing can be found that gives this car the look and feel of traditionally British craftsmanship which adds a greater sense of luxury and sportiness.

V Yachts Asia hosted the Thailand premieres of the Ferretti Yachts 500 and Riva 76’ Perseo at TYS Pattaya, which was held at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Thailand’s exclusive dealer for Ferretti Yachts, Riva and Pershing since early 2021, V Yachts Asia recently announced that both new yachts have been sold.

Chanyo Manakulsawasd, Country Manager of V Yachts Asia, said: “Making their Thailand debut were two yachts in our collection – the new-style Ferretti Yachts 500 alongside the beautiful, ultra-luxurious Riva 76 Perseo. We were thrilled, but not surprised, that both yachts drew great interest from show visitors, leading finally to the successful conclusion of both sales.”

Just over 15m long, the Ferretti Yachts 500 debuted in 2020 and was the brand’s first model to feature an interior by IdeaeItalia along with a Filippo Salvetti exterior. The planing flybridge yacht features three guest cabins and has a top speed of 30 knots.

The Riva 76’ Perseo has an overall length of 23.25m and a beam of 5.75m, and has been one of the most popular models within the brand’s Sportfly series in recent years. Fitted with two 1,800hp MAN V12 V-engines, it has a top speed of 37 knots and was made available in a Super edition launched last year.

The recent arrival of a Sanlorenzo SX112 in Hong Kong completed a remarkable trio of arrivals in the city, as it followed the arrivals of an SX76 and SX88 in the city just a few weeks earlier. The three models make up the entire SX ‘crossover range’, which began with the premiere of the SX88 in 2017 and was followed a year later by the SX76, then the series flagship SX112 in 2020.

The first SX112 in Hong Kong arrived late last year, while the second unit arrived in June 2022, ahead of the summer season. The new unit features an owner’s stateroom and two VIP suites on the lower deck along with a lounge area that can be converted into a fourth cabin.

Simpson Marine broker Windie Tsoi handled the sale and assisted the owners with the purchase process through selection, design and delivery.

“It has been a year since we had our last design meeting, and I was delighted to finally welcome the yacht to Hong Kong. The owner selected playful colours for both the interior and exterior furniture. The saloon looks impressive, with the staircase in glass connecting to the dining area, and this will be an area owner enjoys using a lot,” Tsoi said.

“Every piece of marble on board was selected by the owner, who sees the marble as art and an expression of their personality. With the owner, we arranged a virtual visit to the marble supplier’s facility where we were shown each individual slab to choose from. The entire build journey has been a memorable one and we are all very excited for the arrival into Hong Kong.”

Having arrived together on an earlier ship, the SX76 and SX88 have been commissioned by the Sanlorenzo Asia service team and are ready for summer adventures with their owners. The SX76 was sold to Hainan under the new Free Trade Port (FTP) policy and follows the arrival of a sister ship in ‘China’s Hawaii’ a few months earlier, while several units have been delivered to Hong Kong.

Rachel Ma, a yacht broker with Simpson Marine Sanya, said: “I’m very proud to see a second Sanlorenzo SX76 sold to Sanya in a short span of time. As a result of Hainan’s new Free Trade Port policies that grant foreign yachts access to China with no need for the heavy tax to be paid, we have seen a tremendous increase in the yachting activity on the island.

“The owner of this SX76 took advantage of this new scheme and the quick delivery to Asia. With the global demand for Sanlorenzo, we were fortunate to secure a delivery slot and satisfy this owner who was looking for something truly bespoke and the exclusivity of owning a Sanlorenzo yacht.”

The SX88 is for a couple in Hong Kong, who had previously owned a pre-owned model from the Italian builder. Customisations suited to the family’s usage include a media room in place of a bedroom and a huge dining room with a round dining table for 10 guests.

Simpson Marine broker Tom Allen, who handled the sale of the yacht, said: “After selling a second-hand Sanlorenzo to my clients in 2018, I was elated in 2021 to sign a contract with the same husband-and-wife team for a new-build SX88. This couple worked with our team in Hong Kong and our counterparts in Italy to customise areas of the yacht.

“A year after signing the contract, the yacht has safely arrived and been handed over in Hong Kong, and I’m happy to say the results are magnificent. Beautiful furniture in the saloon and some pops of designer Paola Lenti colour on the flybridge really add the finishing touches to this amazing new yacht.”

Simpson Marine has represented Sanlorenzo in Asia from 2015, since when the shipyard has become one of the most popular luxury motor yacht brands in the region. Nick Stratton, VP of Sales at Sanlorenzo Asia, heads the regional team, while Marko Stojanovic leads the service team.

The second SX112 in Hong Kong

Stratton said: “It’s always an exciting moment to see the arrival of each new yacht, the result of what can easily be one to two years of planning. To see the commissioning docks full and the Sanlorenzo Asia service team hard at work is a satisfying sight. Even after many years, watching a new yacht come together and delivered to its owner is always a great buzz.

“The SX range is simply incredible. All the models share impressive characteristics, be it the generous beam, the air-conditioned flybridges, the huge open-plan living spaces and the owners’ own design personalities on each yacht. These models bring so much to the yachting experience and are why the SX range continues to dominate the market.” www.simpsonmarine.com

Simpson Marine handed over a new-edition Fairline Squadron 68 to its owners following the model’s Asia premiere at TYS Pattaya, where the regional dealer had an impressive nine-yacht, multi-brand showcase.

The delivery to the owners was described as “a special celebration for friends and family” and included a scenic cruise around islands near Pattaya. The yacht is berthed at Ocean Marina Yacht Club and her owners plan to use her at weekends and explore the Gulf of Thailand and further afield.

The 2022 version includes a new hard top and sunroof

Following the arrival of the first unit into Asia, Simpson Marine has secured another hull of the British builder’s impressive new flagship that’s scheduled to arrive in October 2022.

Fairline debuted the original Squadron 68 in 2019 before launching a revised version earlier this year. Changes include a redesigned exterior with newly styled topsides and a new hard top now better integrated into the flybridge moulding, while the former slatted sunroof has been replaced by a fully retractable canvas version.

A side door has been added on the starboard side deck, which improves ventilation and deck access for the skipper. Interior changes include more volume, natural light and improved design and décor, while other key features include a 500kg-capacity high-low bathing platform that can carry a Williams SportJet 345 as a tender.

The official world premiere of the Fairline Squadron 68 will be held at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11.

50M Sunreef Explorer

Sunreef may be leading the way in production of large luxury powercats, yet it’s determined to go bigger still and recently added to its portfolio of designs with the 50M Sunreef Explorer.

Designed to “go anywhere, from lush tropical islands to the most extreme latitudes”, the Polish builder’s latest Explorer design follows the 40M version and is designed to be “self-sufficient for months and offer all the autonomy needed for worldwide exploration in ultimate comfort, safety and luxury”.

50M Sunreef Explorer

The 50M Sunreef Explorer has a huge aft platform that makes the most of its 14.3m beam and the superyacht is fitted with tender cranes, garages and windlasses to help store and deploy a fleet of water toys including dive compressors, Seabobs, e-bikes, e-foils, sailing dinghies and tenders.

The yacht can be tailored for divers, adrenaline-seekers or fishing enthusiasts, while onboard areas can include a private spa, gym and an outdoor cinema with a bar, with accommodation customised for up to 12 guests.

50M Sunreef Explorer

Sunreef believes catamarans are the safest platforms for extended navigation as all essential systems on board are doubled, with two engines, two fuel tanks, multiple generators and two water tanks ensuring redundancy and reliability in critical areas.

In this vein, the 50M Sunreef Explorer includes impressive storage capacities for provisioning and a smart waste management system.

Rossinavi Sea Cat 40

Rossinavi has revealed an all-aluminium Sea Cat 40 concept, the first catamaran proposed by the Italian superyacht builder. Featuring exterior and interior design by Fulvio de Simoni, the sub-500GT motor yacht has an overall length of 42.75m (140ft 3in) and a beam of 13.75m (45ft 1in), with a 100sqm saloon and dining area plus accommodation for 10 guests and seven crew.

The Viareggio yard says the solar panels are designed to produce enough electricity to supply the daily consumption of 5-6 average American households, so can power the onboard services and propulsion at low speeds.

Dufour’s dynamic new flagship

Winner of the Best Large Monohull 50ft and Above category in this year’s SAIL Best Boats awards, the new Dufour 61 is a brand flagship that instils confidence. Words: Zuzana Prochazka Photos: Jérôme Kelagopian & Jean-Marie Liot

The Dufour 61 is the flagship of a range of nine models

Dufour Yachts shifted their marketing strategy two years ago and did away with their Performance and Grand Large differentiators, opting instead to go with a hybrid model and a solitary number in their naming scheme.

This created a combination yacht that’s both performance-oriented and popular with cruisers, and the approach seems to be working. The newly launched Dufour 61 becomes the second in this series and the flagship of the French builder’s line.

Dufour, 61, dynamic, new, flagship, sailing, yacht, Zuzana Prochazka, Jérôme Kelagopian, Jean-Marie Liot, SAIL Best Boats, awards, Felci Yacht Design

The twin-helm Dufour 61 is a solid performer

Despite the change in positioning, Dufour continued with their design team, Felci Yacht Design. At first glance, the Dufour 61 looks like a typical cruiser with a plumb bow, a long chine that builds interior volume, a low coachroof and plenty of beam. Below the waterline, however, she has the same single rudder and deep keel as the builder’s previous performance models.

The construction includes a solid fibreglass hull with an integrated structural grid topped by a cored and infused deck. The bow is blunt, and the drop-down transom is snub, maximising waterline length. The fractional rig has a tapered mast and triple aft-swept spreaders. The best sail plan for short-handed sailing is offered with a self-tacking jib and a Code 0 attached to the sprit.

ON DECK

A boat must function well both under sail and at anchor, and Dufour has improved the on-deck experience from both perspectives.

The Dufour 61 offers plenty of seating aft and on facing bench seats for others to join in the fun

There are two winches set on an angle on either side of the working cockpit. This is a nice separation, so crew handling sheets or halyards stay out of the way of the driver.

As is standard with Dufour, all lines are led aft and the decks are clear. Sailing simplicity includes a mainsheet attached up high on an arch which also holds a spray dodger. In the cockpit, twin helm stations are set on streamlined, angled pedestals with large multi-function displays, instruments and engine controls on superyacht-style binnacles.

The optional aft sunbed offers a great place to relax and can even be arranged as a dinette

The social cockpit is just ahead and features a drop-leaf table that hides an optional refrigerator and wide settees ideal for dining or napping. From here it gets really interesting. There’s an optional sunbed between the wheels. It’s the place to lounge because you’re in the centre of the action but still out of the way.

At anchor, the middle section of the sunbed can be raised to form an athwartships table while the forward and aft sections of the pad serve as seats. It doubles the al fresco dinner guest occupancy or forms the quintessential kids’ table.

The outdoor galley sits above the tender garage

An optional outdoor galley is integrated into the transom where the chef stands on the electric drop transom to use the grill and sink. With the transom open, you’ll also notice a full dinghy garage that accommodates the tender with an outboard attached.

DOWN BELOW

Below, the Dufour 61 is reminiscent of the many models that came before but now with even more opportunity to make it your own.

View of the saloon with the full-width, forward galley, while the owner’s suite is in the bow

Layout options include three or four cabins and three or four heads, but the way the accommodation can be switched up is surprising.

Our test boat was set up for proper owner cruising with the master in the bow and two cabins and heads aft. That leaves an open saloon with an L-shaped dinette and a folding table to port, and a C-shaped sofa to starboard.

Aft view of the galley, which is a step below the saloon

The signature Dufour split galley separates the master stateroom from the saloon. To port is a double sink, a cooktop and a refrigerator/freezer, while to starboard is additional refrigeration and more countertop space. With the galley forward, the saloon benefits from the maximum beam of nearly 16ft 6in.

The master stateroom is forward and has a bed offset to port and a large head in the bow. This cabin and the saloon, with its forward-facing navigation desk on starboard, remain the same regardless of the rest of the configuration choices.

Dufour, 61, dynamic, new, flagship, sailing, yacht, Zuzana Prochazka, Jérôme Kelagopian, Jean-Marie Liot, SAIL Best Boats, awards, Felci Yacht Design

The owner’s cabin with en-suite bathroom forward offers great space and natural light

The galley can be located aft in the portside corner. This adds a small cabin with a single bed and head that are perfect for a professional captain. With the galley here, there’s room forward for an over/under twin cabin on port and an additional head across on starboard.

Another approach is to keep half the forward galley, put over/under bunks on starboard, skip the additional head and maintain the layout of the other cabins as is. To my eye, Dufour’s signature split galley makes the most sense for owner/operators.

This model defines bright and airy with what could be called an “array of sunshine” overhead. Triple fixed skylights lie ahead of triple opening hatches and bring in abundant light and ventilation.

Add to that the hull and deck portlights and the option of light wood and fabrics, and you’ll never feel buried in the hull. The fit and finish are quite upmarket for a production boat and Dufour prides itself on their workmanship with good reason.

PERFORMANCE

The thing about sailing Dufour models is that they feel stout, competent and friendly. That last word can’t be underscored enough.

Today’s size creep has put less experienced or older sailors on some large designs that can get out of hand quickly. But the 61, like all Dufour yachts, is stately, measured and easy-going. With the self-tacking jib, there’s hardly anything to do even in a tacking duel. She stays on her feet and builds confidence as she takes care of her owners.

The Dufour 61 is suitable for short-handed sailing and older skippers

Wind speeds of 15-20 knots are perfect for this design. On flat water, you can expect to sail in the nine-knot range and enjoy pointing up to 40 degrees where the Dufour 61 is still comfortable and doesn’t feel overpowered.

A big boat requires a big engine, and this model offers a 175hp Volvo Penta diesel with a straight shaft that gets the job done. Top speeds are 9-10 knots, but an efficient cruise is more around eight knots. The boat responds quickly from a standstill as the prop pushes water directly over the single rudder. With a bow thruster, even this large model is a cinch to fit into the tightest of spaces.

Dufour now markets nine model from 32-61ft and they get better looking the bigger they grow. Our test boat was outfitted with a few extras including air-conditioning, genset, outdoor galley, electronics and more.

Add commissioning, bottom paint, delivery and a few other goodies, and you can expect a price tag around US$1.3 million. She’s versatile and attractive and instils confidence in anyone inspired by wanderlust. www.dufour-yachts.com
