The Ferretti Group builder announces more details of the first model in its range of sport utility yachts, with hull one featuring a grey hull and five-cabin layout.

The GTX116 will have a top speed over 35 knots with 2,000hp MAN V12 engines

Pershing has revealed more details of its upcoming GTX116, the first model in a new range that “stakes a claim to represent the future of the sport utility yacht category”. The model is the result of collaboration between the design firm headed by Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

The GTX116 has an overall length of 115ft 7in (35.2m) and a beam of 25ft 4in (7.7m), and the hull is built at the Ferretti Group Plug and Mould Plant. The yacht has a sleek, streamlined profile and the first unit, configured with a five-cabin layout, will be painted a new shade of grey.

The yacht has almost 1,800sqft of interconnected outdoor areas

The yacht will be equipped with a triple waterjet propulsion system, with three 1,800hp MAN V12 engines as standard. The option of 2,000hp MAN V12 engines is expected to provide a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots, according to preliminary data.

The model places an emphasis on exterior social areas, with almost 1,800sqft of fully interconnected outdoor areas designed to “redefine the relationship with the water, amplifying onboard liveability in the utmost comfort”, according to the shipyard.

Aft is a 410sqft beach club

Standout features include the 410sqft beach club, which has a teak deck protected by an electro-hydraulic taffrail that opens to connect the beach area with the swim platform, creating a huge space at the water’s edge. The garage can contain a 5m-plus tender, a jet-ski and a water toy.

The foredeck is accessed from the exterior via the port walkway or through the glass doors from the bridge, and can accommodate a Jacuzzi.

The 440sqft sun deck is reached from the stern area by outdoor stairways on either side and features sunbathing and lounging areas, as well as the upper helm station under the carbon hard top.

On the main deck, the large aft cockpit has a sofa, dining table and cocktail bar, and leads into the open-space living area, which features a spacious lounge plus a galley and dining area midships forward. On request, the living area can be fitted with floor-to-ceiling glazing on the port side that opens onto a 4m-long exterior balcony, providing more contact with the water in an open-air setting.

The first Pershing GTX116 has five en-suite cabins comprising the full-beam master cabin midships featuring twin bathrooms, two double VIP cabins and two mirror-image guest cabins with twin beds. The four-cabin option has a master, two VIPs and one twin, and an extra living area. The interior is distinguished by mirrored surfaces and ‘Made in Italy’ materials including leather by Poltrona Frau.

The crew quarters in the forward section of the lower deck include a galley, dinette, laundry, two double cabins for four crew and a captain’s cabin, all three with their own bathroom. Crew will have direct access from the bridge, which is separated from the living area.

Featuring a new design incorporating elements in leather, carbon and aluminium, the helm station is equipped with the Command system, which provides multiple touch screens that integrate onboard monitoring functions with navigation instruments.

The standard version has four 15-inch screens, while the optional version installed on the first unit will have two 57-inch screens. Owners can choose between two different types of pilot seat: two classic seats in the standard version and a single seat integrated with the main boat controls in the optional version, as installed on the first unit.

Wallywhy150 has a similar design to the wallywhy200

Wally has announced that the first wallywhy150 will debut in February 2023 ahead of a world debut in spring.

The model follows the widebody wallywhy200, which debuted at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival and features an enormous volume of 200GT despite an overall length of 88ft 8in, due in large to a beam of 25ft 2in, a high bow and widebody design. Click here for Review in Yacht Style Issue 63.

Wallywhy150 has an overall length of 78ft 11in

Wally-Ferretti Group Engineering designed the exterior of the wallywhy150, while Studio A. Vallicelli & C penned the interior of the yacht, which has an overall length of 78ft 11in and a beam of 22ft 3in.

Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s Managing Director, said: “After the success of the wallywhy200, we were asked to offer the same characteristics of this breakthrough model in a smaller size. We decided to develop this model to be 24m in length and 150GT, adding in some tailored and unique features to give her own identity.

The platform leads directly into the saloon

“The wallywhy150 serves as another example of Wally being ahead of its time, setting new standards in yacht design. As an industry paradigm-shifting project, the wallywhy150 looks set to be seen all around the world, from top Mediterranean ports to remote islands in the Caribbean.”

The wallywhy150 has a top speed of 21 knots with three Volvo Penta D13 IPS1200 engines, reaching 23 knots with the IPS1350 options.

Wally, Ferretti Group, wallywhy150, wallywhy200, Cannes Yachting Festival, Stefano de Vivo, Luca Bassani

The saloon is on two levels

The yacht features a huge aft platform that leads into the aft part of the saloon, which is on the same level. The interior features a curved ceiling and headroom of up to 2.5m (8ft 2in), which Wally says is the highest headroom in her class.

Internal steps on both sides lead up to the forward part of the saloon, while the forward room is a master cabin and offers a 270-degree view due to the high bow, a signature feature of the wallywhy200.

Wally, Ferretti Group, wallywhy150, wallywhy200, Cannes Yachting Festival, Stefano de Vivo, Luca Bassani

The master suite is forward on the main deck

The lower deck includes three guest cabins and two crew cabins, while the sun deck has a full dining area and an outdoor galley with grill and refrigeration.

Luca Bassani, Wally’s Founder and Chief Designer, said: “The challenge was to incorporate some of the wallywhy200’s best features into a smaller package, while opening the door to new and innovative solutions in this size range. Most importantly, we have maximised and optimised her exterior spaces as much as possible. They are absolutely enormous and totally unique for her size in the industry.”

Jeremy Monteiro of JASS Wants To Make Jazz a Mainstream Affair

Jeremy Monteiro of JASS Wants To Make Jazz a Mainstream Affair

SHARE

JASS intends to grow the interest in jazz through multiple avenues like working closely with youths through mentorships and staging more concerts to engage with the general public.

By Joseph Low

You are one of Singapore’s most iconic jazz musicians. Tell us about your first steps as a musician.

I started learning Classical piano since I was six years old in 1966. I started to get interested in jazz when I turned 14 in 1974. My dad was a Mobil oil executive but he played jazz guitar and had a great selection of jazz guitar records. He often had jam sessions with his friends at home and so in a sense, he inspired me to become a jazz musician.

After my O levels, I worked as a solo pianist and organist at the now defunct “Country Club” hotel in East Coast Road and in early 1975, I went for an audition to be a pianist at Club 392. The owner, Mr AJ Isaac hired me as a pianist and bandleader. My musicians were in their 30s and 40s at the time.

A writer in Hong Kong once described your style as “a mix of Ravel and the Blues”. Would you agree with this statement?

That’s actually quite an accurate description. I love the French Impressionistic harmonies including that of Ravel. And I love the Blues. So somehow how I synthesised that and came up with a style which also combined some Bebop licks and even some Country and Western stylistic touches.

When was the Jazz Association (Singapore) (JASS) created, and can you share with us about its mission and what has been achieved so far?

JASS was formed in 2016. We set out to help raise the level of excellence in jazz in Singapore. We also aim to grow our audience, work closely in developing our youths through mentorship like the “Lion City Youth Jazz Festival”. The scholarship programme that we have enables those interested in pursuing jazz the means to kickstart their professional study. Other activities that we are participating in include projects with children with autism, Down’s syndrome and cultural diplomacy efforts. Our main orchestra JASSO has performed in the US, China, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Thailand.

Since Covid-19, we have continued our cultural diplomacy works through our online presentations, which has seen our online shows attain hundreds of thousands of views from all over the world.

We added a new pillar to our work in 2020, the JASS Crisis Fund to help jazz musicians in financial distress through Covid-19 and beyond, with short term financial aid.

What will be the highlights of the JASS Benefit Gala Dinner on 31 July 2022?

We are excited about our upcoming gala. We will be the first arts company to hold a full-fledged in-person gala with a full big band since the easing of our Covid-19 measures.

The theme of our gala is “Swing It!” and we are looking forward to playing some swinging jazz standards with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO) and our special featured guest artists Nathan Hartono and Joanna Dong.

Our gala night will also be a triple celebration where we celebrate Jeremy Monteiro’s 45th career anniversary, the 121st birthday of jazz legend and father of modern jazz, Loui Armstrong and JASS’ upcoming 6th anniversary. This year’s gala will be a night to remember.

What are the main avenues of work for JASS in the coming five years?

One of the main aspects of our artmaking work will be developing an amalgamation of the instruments and music of our Asian heritage with jazz to try and create a truly unique style of music.

Of course we will continue our work in promoting jazz as one of the mainstream genres, but we are excited about this new offshoot.

On the community work front, we intend to do our “Jazz for Kids” and “Jazz for Seniors” programmes and to reach out to the communities and bring jazz to the neighbourhoods as well.

We also want to make jazz accessible and inclusive and will continue our partnership with ART:DIS (previously known as Very Special Arts).

From teenagers to seniors, is it easy in Singapore to find suitable jazz classes or a jazz academy?

Currently, jazz is an elective subject for the O Levels and I notice that jazz is also been infused into the general syllabus for primary and secondary schools. One can also study for a degree in jazz studies at LASALLE College of the Arts. There are also many music teachers who teach jazz privately for those interested to learn how to play it privately.

JASS as we are known by our acronym also conducts jazz appreciation talks for the public as well as professional talks like our “Jazz improvisation for Classical Musicians” to help demystify jazz for classical musicians.

How are you reaching to new audiences? What is currently being done to get the younger generation to appreciate jazz?

Even before JASS was formed, it was amazing to see young musicians in their teens develop an interest in straightahead jazz and attain very impressive levels.

Both the Singapore Polytechnic and the National University Jazz clubs have become a hotbed of jazz activity and some of the younger ones from a few years ago have now become serious professional level jazz musicians. One of them is Sean Hong Wei, who we first had in the youth orchestra when he was 17. Now at 23, he plays as the lead alto player in both the main and youth orchestras in JASSO and JASSYO!

Another leader of the youth jazz movement is Aaron James Lee, one of our current JASS scholars studying towards a jazz degree at LASALLE and is already one of the top call jazz drummers in Singapore.

What are your favourite places to listen to Jazz in Singapore?

Image: Norhendra Ruslan

Currently, there are two main jazz clubs in Singapore but live music has not been allowed for more than two years already because of the pandemic. One is Maduro on Dempsey Hill, and the other is Simply Jazz, a jazz club I opened at CHIJMES in November 2021 with the Tinbox Group. Before Covid-19, there were also other clubs like Blu Jazz that was a favourite for the youth musicians.

Tell us more about this exciting collab you recently participated in, “re:Sound Collective”?

The collaboration that I did with re:Sound Collective was indeed a special one for me. In 1991, I won a Silver Medal for Best Music Score at the International Radio Festival of New York. After that, I moved away from writing large ensemble works to concentrate on being a jazz pianist.

In the last 10 years, I have been hearing the siren call to go back to writing large ensemble music so about two years ago, I decided to start writing symphonic jazz works again and help in catalysing the Symphonic Jazz movement in Singapore.

The concert with re:Sound Collective gave me an opportunity to write and perform my orchestral works. I had been writing these compositions for the past two years so it was wonderful to see it come to life with the magnificent re:Sound Collective orchestra.

You have also been busy with the opening of Simply Jazz at Chijmes in 2021. What is the concept behind the club and why has it become the go-to place for jazz lovers?

Simply Jazz has the best of both worlds — a great chef with a menu that would excite the well-travelled Singapore palette as well as a really exciting jazz atmosphere. With a live jazz band playing almost every night, Simply Jazz has become one of the go-to places for jazz in Singapore.

If you were to name one person or musician who has influenced you greatly for your love of Jazz, who would that be?

I’m afraid it’s not one person but three. One is my mentor and godfather of Singapore jazz Louis Soliano, who remains active at 79; the two-time Grammy award-winning saxophonist Ernie Watts with whom I have been making music with since 1987 with more than a hundred shows since then. I have also written more than 10 pieces with Ernie that have appeared on both his albums and mine.

Finally, the late great Grammy award-winning bassist Eldee Young was my best friend and I had a group with him together with Grammy winning drummer Redd Holt from 1986 until 2007 when Eldee passed away. Together as “Monteiro, Young and Holt”, we played on the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival, which the late founder Claude Nobs called one of the great concerts in the first 22 years of Montreux.

Asia Yachting said it was delighted with the turnout at the first Hong Kong viewing of the Fountaine Pajot MY6 at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Although the city’s first typhoon of the year wrote off the Saturday, viewings were held on the following three days, with good numbers visiting the popular power catamaran, formerly known as the MY44.

“We are happy that the typhoon did not ruin the mood of powercat lovers,” said Olivier Besson, CEO and founder of Asia Yachting, which represents Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts in Hong Kong. “It has been quite a while since our last boat show because of the pandemic, so it’s great to see the smiles of our guests again.”

It was Asia Yachting’s first event for several months due to the pandemic and particularly a strong Omicron-led wave at the start of the year. Guests were happy to inspect a model that’s among Fountaine Pajot four-strong range of powercats including the new MY4.S, MY5 (formerly MY40) and flagship Power 67.

Designed by Pierangelo Andreani, the MY6 has a length of 44ft and a beam of almost 22ft, and now features a new Millesime interior. The yacht features a large saloon, well equipped galley and upper and lower driving stations. Accommodation includes an impressive owner’s suite on the port side, two VIP cabins to starboard and an optional forward cabin.

“The guests were especially excited about the volume of the aft cockpit and the 360-degree view of the flybridge, as they provide great spaces for social events,” Besson said.

“The next hull of the Fountaine Pajot MY6 is due to arrive in summer 2023, so it’s worth looking ahead if you want to get your hands on one. The first flagship Power 67 power catamaran in Asia will also arrive next summer, so multihull lovers in Asia should keep their eyes peeled in the coming year.”

Azimut-Benetti Group has announced that the value of its production for 2021/2022 has reached €1 billion (about US$1 billion), representing an annual increase of 19 per cent. Furthermore, its updated order book is at an all-time high of over €2.5 billion, covering production for the next three years.

Asia-Pacific accounts for 16 per cent of a global order book led by the Americas (38 per cent) and Europe (32 per cent), while the Middle East and Africa accounts for 14 per cent.

The Group says the figures highlight its ability “to anticipate trends and interpret the wishes of both existing owners and new customers”, revealing that it has gradually acquired younger owners, with an average age of 45 for Azimut buyers and 55 for Benetti clients.

Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “As a group, we’ve always made the effort to spark the interest of new customers who have little or no connection with boating, and we can report some excellent results over the years, although the significant change in habits and lifestyles recently seen at global level has contributed to today’s results. We’ve been successful at foreseeing this change and interpreting what new customers want, and we hope to continue this course.”

The Group also confirmed its commitment to sustainability across all aspects of the business and is planning major investments in coming years, with a focus not only on products but also industrial development, production sites and local area training projects.

The total investment will be €130 million over the next four years, focused on the reduction of energy consumption through conversion to photovoltaic and geothermal technology, development of production sites, digitalisation of industrial processes, personnel training and a general improvement in workers’ living conditions. www.azimutbenetti.it www.azimutyachts.hk
