Sunreef Yachts will soon begin construction on its first overseas production facility in Ras Al Khaimah, a northerly emirate in the United Arab Emirates, “in response to a rising demand from the Middle East, Asia and Australia”.

Sunreef currently operates two sites in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast, comprising an expanding new facility and its original operation in the history Gdansk Shipyard.

For the “new, state-of-the art facility” in the UAE, Sunreef has invested almost €30 million (about US$30 million) and acquired a 65,000sqm land reserve. It plans to begin construction on an initial 13,000sqm plot in the coming weeks.

Dedicated to the construction of luxury, custom-made catamarans, the Ras Al Khaimah site is scheduled to begin production in September and initially employ about 50 people. Sunreef expects the site to employ up to 800 people within three years.

Lürssen has announced that it will display the 115m Ahpo at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, where it’s expected to be the largest vessel on display. Featuring exterior and interior design by Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard, the former Project Enzo has an overall length of 115.1m (377ft 6in) and a beam of 18.3m (60ft).

After her delivery in November 2021, Ahpo has spent her first season in the Caribbean and is currently cruising in the Mediterranean. She will have her world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 28-October 1.

Nuvolari Lenard designed Ahpo’s exterior and interior

Ahpo has been built for a repeat client who previously owned an 86m Lürssen and “required top-notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his family”, again selecting Nuvolari Lenard for the exterior and interior. Moran Yacht & Ship managed and supervised the project.

An exclusive Review of Ahpo appears in YACHT STYLE Issue 66 (click to read) and will soon appear in an online version.

Philippe Briand and Winch Design have designed the Jeanneau Yachts 65, which includes lounges aft of the two steering stations and private access to the guest cabins.

After the recent launches of the Jeanneau Yachts 60 in 2021 and new flagship 65 this year, the line will once again be renewed with the launch of the Jeanneau Yachts 55, which will be revealed at Boot Düsseldorf in January 2023. Like the 60 and 65, the new 17m model with a 5m beam features design by French naval architect Philippe Briand and an interior by London-based Winch Design.

The aft cockpit is entirely dedicated to relaxation, with lounge areas aft on each side, one U-shaped and one L-shaped, including tables and bench seating that convert into a full-beam sunbed. There’s also a large retractable hydraulic swim platform.

The forward cockpit, dedicated to handling, features twin steering wheels and winches within easy reach. This space, which can be entirely covered by a hard top, is equipped with an exterior chart table and protected by a wide windscreen. There’s also private access to the two guest cabins, as well as the main companionway to enter the saloon and owner’s suite.

The flush deck features integrated wraparound side decks, which are slightly inclined and facilitate movement around the perimeter of the cockpit. For long offshore cruises, in addition to a wraparound windscreen, Jeanneau has offered a hard top – with the option of solar panels – that fully encloses the forward helm and a bimini to shelter the aft living space.

To starboard, a large galley faces the L-shaped saloon. Forward is the generous owner’s cabin equipped with a large berth to the port side, multiple storage compartments and a dressing table. An optional skipper cabin can be added forward of the en-suite bathroom.

Aft, the two guest cabins with private access from the deck each have a double berth and en-suite bathroom. Cabins are appointed with fine woodwork in light oak (or teak) and dark floorboards (or light). Details include leather-wrapped door handles, wood by Alpi, a refined door design, ceiling treatment and indirect lighting in the owner’s cabin and saloon.

The hull has a draught of 2.45m (or 1.95m with a shallow draught) and a choice of two riggings: classic or with a furling mast. Owners can also choose between a self-tacking jib or a classic genoa. A code 3, for crosswinds of between 15-20 knots of true wind, can be secured on the bowsprit, while a bow thruster and stern thruster can help short-handed manoeuvres.

Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, Gulf Craft’s co-founder and Chairman, said: “As Gulf Craft continues its year-long 40th-anniversary celebrations this year, we are very much looking forward to returning to this year’s festival which has become a highlight on the international events calendar for the yachting community.

Erwin Bamps, Brand Director of Prestige, said: “Our customers’ expectations extend to multihulls. Prestige owners cruise with their families and, for the majority, without crew. They particularly value the feeling of spaciousness afforded by the 360° view in the saloon, the extraordinarily bright interior, the optimal design of the owner’s cabin, and ease of handling of our yachts.

“Today, our buyers want more luxury, space, and comfort. High cruising speed is no longer a demand – stability is, on the other hand. These have naturally pointed us to the catamaran. With this platform on the water, Prestige renews its promise to realise the dream of living on your own private island.”

Ivy McIver of Cirrus Aircraft Offers Insight into the SR Series, the World’s Best-Selling GA Aircraft

Ivy McIver of Cirrus Aircraft Offers Insight into the SR Series, the World’s Best-Selling GA Aircraft

SHARE

The Cirrus Airframe Parachute System is a one-of-a-kind innovation that sets the golden standard for safety in the General Aviation industry.

 By Joseph Low

You have been with Cirrus Aircraft since 2006. How did you get started in aviation?

My love for aviation started when I saw the first Top Gun in 1986. Watching the flying scenes planted a seed in my brain, and from then on I had a singular goal: to become a pilot. After graduating from MIT and launching my career as a software developer for an investment bank, I started flying lessons at my local airport and never looked back. After spending eight years in the software industry, I pivoted to an aviation career.

I joined Cirrus Aircraft in 2006 as a regional sales director in Salt Lake City, UT, responsible for new and pre-owned aircraft sales, development of the Cirrus training and service network, and demonstration flights of Cirrus aircraft in the Northern Rockies territory. In 2011, I continued my aircraft sales career in Seattle, WA where I covered the Pacific Northwest, Western Canada and Alaska. In 2014, I transitioned to a role on the marketing team as product line manager and subsequently director.

My current role at Cirrus Aircraft is Director, SR Product Line in Knoxville, TN, overseeing the company’s piston product roadmap development and product marketing. Over my 16-year career at Cirrus Aircraft, I have earned my seaplane rating, tailwheel and formation flying endorsements, and a Vision Jet type rating. I have over 5,000 flight hours and am the proud owner of an American Champion Citabria 7GCBC.

What influenced the SR Series interior and exterior design?

2022 G6 SR Aircraft, Cirrus Aircraft

The very first SR design was influenced by a desire for a safe and comfortable pilot and passenger experience in a plane that could carry more and go faster and farther than the competitive aircraft on the market at the time — that was in the early 90s.

Cirrus Aircraft co-founders loved the look of composite kit planes like the Glasair, and they wanted to make a plane that was simple for a pilot to fly but also make passengers feel safe and comfortable. Large windows that increased visibility and let in lots of light, and two large doors for easy ingress and egress inspired the rest of the aircraft design. They also wanted a flight deck that was simple yet powerful — something that enhanced the pilot’s situational awareness but also was easy for a passenger to interpret. Putting passengers at ease by displaying the aircraft location on a moving map and information like distance to destination and fuel remaining at the destination was very important to the initial flight deck design. Lastly, the plane was built around having a whole airframe parachute in case of emergency. One of Cirrus Aircraft’s co-founders was involved in a mid-air collision during flight training prior to starting the company. That experience sparked the idea for the Cirrus Airframe Parachute Systems (CAPS).

The Cirrus SR Series has an incredible history of innovation, design and capability. Tell us more about the evolution of this series and how you have contributed?

Cirrus Aircraft began as a kit aircraft company. The first aircraft we designed and sold was the VK-30 kit (non-FAA certified) plane. This was a great learning experience and inspired us to develop the SR20, a more approachable airplane that was easy to fly and also FAA certified. We delivered the first SR20 in 1999, and two years later, we introduced the SR22, a higher speed and performing SR.

In 2010 we brought the SR22T to market, a turbocharged version of the SR. Throughout the years, we have continued to introduce features that enhance safety, comfort, convenience and performance, as well as programmes to improve and simplify the ownership experience. We are now offering the Generation 6 SR Series.

I joined Cirrus Aircraft in 2006 and started selling the Generation 2 SR20 and SR22. As a sales director, I introduced hundreds of people to aviation and grew the Cirrus Aircraft owner population by flying as many pilots and non-pilots in a brand-new Cirrus Aircraft model as I could. During that time, we introduced new generations of the SR series (G3-G5) and game-changing new features like the Cirrus Perspective by Garmin integrated flight deck, certified flight into known icing (FIKI) capability, a new model (SR22T), a digital autopilot with Enhanced Stability Protection (ESP) and the Blue LVL Button (which keeps the aircraft straight-and-level if the pilot is in need of a re-set).

Once I moved into a product line position on the marketing team, I had a more direct role in shaping the product roadmap. Notably, introducing the concept of providing transition training to all Cirrus Aircraft buyers which evolved into the Cirrus Embark programme. We also created Cirrus IQ, enabling owners to remotely connect to their aircraft by mobile app. I work closely with our engineering team and strategic suppliers to bring new and innovative features to the SR Series that are meaningful to our owners and was integral in bringing the Generation 6 SR Series aircraft to market.

A unique feature that all Cirrus aircraft are equipped with is the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), which includes a total airframe parachute to safely guide the aircraft to the ground in the event of an emergency. Do you think Cirrus Aircraft has influenced safety innovation within the GA sector and among consumers?

Cirrus Airfram Parachute System

Absolutely. Yes, CAPS is a tremendous safety feature that has had a meaningful impact on hundreds of people and, to this day, is still a one-of-a-kind innovation on FAA-certified airplanes. We’re still the only FAA-certified plane with a parachute. Additionally, Cirrus Aircraft’s focus on training has remarkably influenced General Aviation’s safety innovation.

Cirrus Aircraft has combined technological innovation with a culture of safety-centric initial and continued education. Many standard safety features like ESP, auto-descent, hypoxia alert, Blue LVL Button, airbag seatbelts, and synthetic vision have become standard or optional features in other General Aviation aircraft.

Cirrus Aircraft has also focused on building a robust network of Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilots (CSIP’s), online training materials, and Cirrus Training Centers (CTC’s) cultivating a community that is focused on safety.

Aside from safety, do you see any other major trends right now in the personal aviation industry?

We are seeing a trend toward comfort, convenience and style. Of course, our owners expect a well-built, high-performing, safe and high-quality aircraft — that is a given. But owners want more than that. They demand comfort for both pilot and passengers, and an in-flight experience that rivals a luxury sedan. They also want to make it unique — almost a reflection of their personality. An aircraft purchase is often personal and very emotional, so the aircraft not only needs to fit the mission but also needs to fuel the passion. A variety of exterior and interior colour choices and designs encourage owners to express themselves through their Cirrus Aircraft models.

Who has inspired/mentored you and influenced your career?

The list is long! My family has always been extremely supportive of me chasing my aviation dreams. My mom inspires me to be open-minded, bold and unapologetic about trying things. Jeff Tworek was a sales manager and mentor during my software days — he had a unique ability to diffuse challenging situations using humour, humility and his over-the-top personality. I have always tried to emulate his style. Heike Larson was the sales manager who hired me at Cirrus Aircraft — she was strong, poised, intelligent and a great example of who I could become and a great female mentor in our male-dominated industry. Wilma Melville and I became friends in her late 70s, and I was in my early 40s — she flew me into backcountry Idaho in her Citabria and introduced me to a whole new side of aviation that I continue to love today. There are too many people to list. I have been fortunate to meet (and continue to meet) so many amazing people!

As a pilot yourself, what is your favourite aspect of flying?

Ivy Mclver

The freedom to explore places that most people don’t get to see, the perspective of seeing things from the air, and the people I’ve met along the way. I guess that is three favourites!

Aside from flying, your other passions include adventure racing, cycling, skiing and running. How do you find enough time to enjoy all these activities?

I’ve always believed that you make the time for your passions. I don’t always make the time for all of these things at once — it’s a bit seasonal. I am lucky that I have a very supportive family and my husband shares my passion for flying and cycling so that helps that we do that together!

One of the sleekest aluminium superyachts released in recent years, Tecnomar’s Evo 120 has proven a popular model in Asia and the newly launched Lucy is available through Camper & Nicholsons.

Lucy is the newest hull from the Tecnomar Evo 120 series

With its clients now including Conor McGregor, Tecnomar has been fighting hard in recent years to be front of mind when it comes to fast, sleek and stylish motor yachts. It has been working. The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 – inspired by the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 sports car – was a much-hyped partnership with the iconic Italian sports car brand.

And when the first hull of the 60-knot speedster was launched last year, McGregor announced he was the owner, just a couple of months after the motor-mouthed Irishman topped Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

Two units of the Evo 120 have already headed to Asia

The 63-footer is a new addition to a portfolio that also includes the Evo 55, a 40-knot model with Volvo IPS engines that has come to Asia. However, the Tecnomar model that has recently made the most impact in this region is the Evo 120, with hull one touring multiple countries in Asia including Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

In fact, two units of the Evo 120 are in Asia, while Lucy (click for more details) was recently launched in Marina di Carrara, where Tecnomar is an anchor brand of The Italian Sea Group along with Admiral, while Perini Navi is a new addition to the TISG family.

STYLISH & STRONG

While not as fast as her smaller sisters, the Evo 120 is similarly notable for its astonishing exterior design by the shipyard’s ‘Style Centre’ (Tecnomar Centro Stile). Also inspired by the car industry, she flows elegantly from back to front with long lines and shallow curves, and extended swathes of glazing. It’s sports-car looks on a superyacht scale.

The foredeck  includes a two-level lounging area, while a Williams jet tender is included

However, her slender, ultra-modern silhouette belies an 8m beam, which contributes to large outdoor deck spaces and 250GT of volume. Camper & Nicholsons is the Central Agency for the sale of Lucy, having already been appointed late last year to market Tecnomar and Admiral in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Carmen Lau, a Senior Advisor for the historic brokerage house that’s celebrating its 240th anniversary this year, says the Evo 120 makes an impression wherever she goes.

“People always notice her futuristic exterior,” says Lau, one of Asia’s most successful superyacht brokers. “The Evo 120 is very popular in Asia because of the aggressive exterior as well as the many indoor and outdoor areas for entertaining guests.”

The flybridge jacuzzi is surrounded by sunpads on three sides

The Evo 120 is also distinguished by the fact its hull is made of aluminium, which is lighter than steel and stiffer, stronger and lighter than fibreglass, yet not often used on a 37m flybridge motor yacht and typically used for low production numbers. Lau believes the aluminium hull, which contributes to a shallow draft of just over 4ft, is among the model’s strongest assets.

“It’s rare to find a 120-footer with an aluminium hull. The biggest advantage of an aluminium hull is the weight and longevity. It’s about 30 per cent lighter than a fibreglass boat of a similar size, so this results in better performance and improves the fuel efficiency,” she says.

“Also, aluminium yachts have a longer lifespan, as they don’t wear out or deteriorate over time. A well maintained aluminium craft can retain its value for a long time.”

ENTERTAINMENT HUBS

It’s also clear that the Evo 120 is to be enjoyed. Her curved swim platform offers a nice place to laze by the water, while the almost semi-circular garage holds a Williams SportJet 435 tender and two jetskis that can be deployed by a 1,200kg-capacity crane.

The aft ends of the flybridge, main deck and lower deck are all curved

Shallow steps lead up to the aft cockpit, which features loose seats around an oblong table and a curved sofa, while aft is a large sunbathing area on top of the garage. However, the focal point is the stylish, rounded outdoor bar with fitted stools, which sits centrally before the saloon doors. There’s more outdoor lounging space on the foredeck, which is up a few steps and has a two-level sunpad.

However, it’s the flybridge that really underlines the yacht’s focus on entertaining in style. Starboard stairs from the cockpit lead you straight to the aft jacuzzi, a square design surrounded on three sides by angular sunpads.

The portside sunpads lead to a sofa facing a flexible table, while forward is an angular bar and wet bar with fridge icemaker and optional grills. To starboard is a large sofa, more for lounging than sitting, and it’s conveniently accompanied by a champagne glacette. Forward is the semi-raised pilothouse, cleverly concealed within the superstructure.

GRAND INTERIOR

Back on the main deck, the saloon is accessed by doors either side of the cockpit bar and welcomes guests to a calming, luxurious ambience. Top-of-the-range marble is among high-end materials and a special handmade silver-leaf ceiling exemplifies the sophisticated, detailed décor.

The lounge starts with a forward-facing sofa and has longer sofas on each side, all with a good view of the 75-inch TV integrated into the forward bulkhead. Like the exterior, the custom furniture is inspired by automotive design.

The two side hallways lead to separate staircases – port to the flybridge, starboard to the lower deck – and both carry on to the formal dining room, which has a round dining table for 10 complete with ‘Lazy Susan’, designed to appeal to clients in Asia. There’s plenty of storage space on either side including for wine coolers.

Designed with Asia-based clients in mind, the formal dining room has a round dining table for 10

A starboard door leads forward to the galley area, which includes the crew mess, laundry and stairs down to the three crew cabins in the bow.

Guest accommodation on the lower deck includes the full-beam owner’s suite midships, which has an aft-facing bed and twin-sink  bathroom to port and a roomy lounge area with vanity table to starboard. On the starboard side of the central hallway is a twin en-suite guest cabin with pullman bed and en-suite bathroom, and then there’s the VIP cabin, which has a forward-facing bed and large bathroom.

On the port side is another of the yacht’s distinguishing features: a spacious, custom-designed massage room that leads forward to an elegant sauna as well as a shower area. If needed, the massage room can be converted to a cabin, which enables the yacht to accommodate nine guests.

Lucy is offered for sale with a full two-year warranty and has an asking price of €15.6 million (about US$15.6 million), while cryptocurrency payment is also available.

A custom-designed sauna and shower room is to port on the lower deck

Lucy is very suitable for an owner looking for a yacht with good entertainment areas, such as a separate dining area, a full massage and sauna room, a well-equipped sun deck with jacuzzi, and aft cockpit with a bar,” says Lau, who says the yacht is likely to spend at least the summer in the Mediterranean.

“Soon after she was listed, I received a lot of enquiries from the US and Europe. There’s only a handful of new yachts available in the market now, so Lucy is one of the few that allows a client to enjoy their yacht this summer.”

Simpson Marine and Ali G have collaborated on an NFT collection, ‘Ode to the Sea’, which is scheduled to launch on July 28. The exclusive collection offers 15 unique photography NFTs, each a 1/1 edition and available for collection via Ali G’s official account on Foundation, an NFT marketplace that aims to build a new creative economy based on the Ethereum blockchain.

An initiative of Asia’s largest yacht dealer, the launch is the first of its kind in the region’s yacht industry and has been curated by Ali G (real name Ali Ghorbani) of Ali G Studios, a Hong Kong-based professional photographer and NFT creator. Since last year, NFTs have become increasingly popular digital assets, representing real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos.

Simpson Marine, which became a Corporate Patron of Hong Kong Ballet in June, chose the concept of a ballet dance at sea on board a Sanlorenzo SX76 and a Bluegame BGX70, with Ali G photographing two ballet dancers in Victoria Harbour, Repulse Bay and South Bay.

Ewa Stachurska, Group Marketing Manager at Simpson Marine, said: “This has been an exciting project to work on with Ali G, as we’ve been witnessing Hong Kong’s creative NFT effervescence for the past few months.

“We’re conscious that many of our yacht owners are crypto investors and NFT collectors, so thought this creative project would appeal to them and they would want to have a piece of this exclusive collection in their growing portfolio.”

Ali G said: “Simpson Marine has been synonymous with luxury yachting and is known for being a pioneer in the yachting world. I’m honoured to be part of this collaboration and to use my art to bring alive a vision that we planned for months and executed flawlessly together. I hope this paves the way for more brand and artist collaborations in the future.”

The Italian builder has revealed its new Magellano 66, which boosts a renewed long-range series already bolstered by the 25 Metri and 30 Metri models.

The Dual Model hull offers efficient displacement speeds and a top speed of 23 knots

Azimut has shared photos and details of its new Magellano 66, which debuted at this year’s Venice Boat Show and features in-house exterior and interior design along with a double-chine Dual Mode hull developed with P.L.A.N.A. (Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture).

The Magellano 66 follows this year’s launch of the series-flagship 30 Metri, the 25 Metri unveiled in late 2020 and the entry-level Magellano 43, offering a wide range of models from 13-30m.

Azimut, Magellano, 66, 25 Metri, 30 Metri, Dual Mode, hull, P.L.A.N.A., Pierluigi Ausonio, Naval Architecture, carbon-fibre, Navetta

The foredeck features a large C-shaped sofa

The new Magellano 66 has an overall length of 66ft 1in (20.15m) and a beam of 17ft 10in (5.54m), and offers up to four cabins for eight guests plus a crew cabin aft.

Fitted with twin 850hp MAN i6 engines, the yacht has a top speed of up to 23 knots, cruising speed of 19 knots and displacement cruising speed of 10-12 knots, with a 4,500-litre fuel capacity supporting a long range.

The flybridge has multiple social areas

Azimut has used carbon-fibre lamination in the flybridge, aft platform and hard top (optional) to reduce weight, which combines with the second-generation Dual Mode hull to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20 per cent at speeds from 15-22 knots compared to regular hard-chine hulls.

As such, Azimut says the Magellano 66 joins its “family of low-emission yachts”, which now represents 50 per cent of its whole range.

The cockpit offers alfresco dining and a glass parapet

Outdoor areas include a large flybridge, which features a C-shaped sofa and a dining table to port, a full-width sunbathing area forward of the helm, and a clear aft area that can include loose furniture, while an American bar is an option.

The foredeck has a C-shaped seating area with a table, as well as lots of storage space. The aft cockpit has a large C-shaped sofa and large table for alfresco dining, as well as an ‘infinity terrace’ with a clear glass parapet offering a view of the water.

The saloon includes a formal dining area forward

The interior is illuminated by extensive glazed surfaces and features curved lines and a refined palette of neutral colour tones. The main deck is offered in two layouts, including an open-space version with galley and helm station partially in view due to the use of low furnishings. The Navetta layout has a more formal separation between the living area and the galley and helm station.

The saloon features a comfortable lounge aft of a formal dining area furnished with a rectangular table and six upholstered chairs, while forward is the galley to port of the lower helm station.

The full-beam master suite is midships

On the lower deck, the full-beam master cabin is midships and has large windows and spacious wardrobes, while the VIP cabin is in the bow. In-between is a twin cabin with en-suite bathroom to starboard, while to port is the option of a bunk-bed cabin or a functional area such as a pantry or storage room.

The Amels 60 emerges from the build shed where she arrived in July 2021

The second Amels 60, known as Project Witchcraft, has emerged from the Amels and Damen Yachting drydock in Vlissingen, marking the start of the final build phase ahead of delivery to her owner this autumn.

After Amels 6002 was rolled out of the build shed where she had spent the last 12 months since arriving for outfitting, onlookers were able to see the 197-footer’s colour scheme and a notable change to the exterior styling of the signature windows, customised for the owner.

oran Yacht & Ship, which has represented the owner throughout the build, stated: “We are truly excited to see Project Witchcraft emerge from the finishing shed and into the water for the first time.  This milestone is always a special moment in the construction schedule.

“Moran Yacht & Ship are very proud of the many customisations we were able to implement into this platform, which is a testament to the Damen Yachting engineering and production team. The entire owner’s team is looking forward to the final stages of production and moving towards another successful delivery.”

The second Amels 60 features customised windows

The Amels 60 features naval architecture by Damen Yachting, exterior design by Espen Øino and a customised “light, airy interior” by the owner’s chosen interior designer.

The yacht has a volume of 830GT, accommodates 12 guests and 12 crew, and features hybrid power and propulsion technology. Outdoor areas include the large sun deck, swim platform and folding owner’s suite balcony, while there’s space on the foredeck for a 9m luxury tender to be stowed.

Arie Midavaine, Damen Yachting Project Manager, said: “Watching 6002 head outside for the first time signifies everything the team has achieved since she arrived here in Vlissingen last July. And by team, I mean everyone involved in making this milestone happen – the Damen Yachting team, the owner’s team and all our co-workers.

“It’s down to the great collaboration between all these parties that we’re standing here admiring this stunning new 60m in the daylight and open air. I am looking forward to the final outfitting phase now and getting her out on the water.”
