Sunseeker developing Predator 65

Sunseeker developing Predator 65

The British builder is preparing to debut the newest addition to its sport Predator range at the beginning of 2022.

Sunseeker is scheduled to start 2022 with the world premiere of its Predator 65 at Boot Dusseldorf (January 22-30), the world’s biggest indoor boat show. The 67ft 2in model has an aerodynamic exterior featuring tinted glazing, teak, carbon-fibre and polished stainless steel, and is powered by either Volvo Penta IPS-1200 or IPS-1350 engines, reaching up to 35 knots with the latter.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, said: “The Predator 65 is an exciting proposition for any prospective buyer. With dynamic handling and exceptional performance, the driving experience is peerless while providing spacious living quarters for owners to enjoy extended time on the open water.”

An extra-wide tender garage allows a Williams Sportjet 345 tender to be carried and launched via a new diagonal sliding hydraulic bathing platform. The additional garage space can store Seabobs, inflatable paddleboards, diving equipment or racking. With the Beach Club option, the flush platform can fit free-standing furniture, while the opened door has a built-in rain shower, lighting and speakers.

In a standard arrangement, the aft cockpit includes seating backed onto a large sunpad over the garage and a social bar unit with matching stools on the port side. Owners can opt for a fully integrated wet bar or extended J-shaped lounge seating running aft from the galley across the width of the cockpit. The optional crew cabin is accessed via a stairwell in the aft cockpit.

Sliding doors to starboard and a dropping window portside allow the cockpit to merge with the open-plan interior living space on the main deck. The aft galley is complemented by a full-height shelving unit on the starboard side.

The main saloon features C-shaped seating and a fixed TV behind the helm station. The space is customisable with options including seating on the starboard side with a rise-and-fall TV or extended portside seating to suit the lower galley arrangement.

The oversized, polished carbon-fibre sunroof above the helm opens to more than 2m in width, flooding the living space forward with even more natural light.

Below deck, the three-cabin layout provides accommodation for up to six guests. A spacious, full-beam master stateroom features a generous en-suite, while the VIP cabin is forward. Each guest cabin has an en-suite and there is a separate day-head below.

Lower-deck options include an open-plan owner’s office linked to the master stateroom, a single-berth cabin and lower-deck galley orsaloon.

Benetti is staging the US debuts of both the new Motopanfilo 37M and Oasis 40M at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 27-31) along with the 47m custom build Bacchanal, appearing at a show for the first time.

The Italian builder will be showcasing the Motopanfilo 37M in the Superyacht Village after the model’s world premiere in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where the Oasis 40M also appeared, having debuted at the 2020 Genoa International Boat Show.

The Motopanfilo 37M is Benetti’s newest Class yacht and has been inspired by Benetti’s navettas from the 1960s. The exterior lines by Francesco Struglia with Benetti echo the vintage style of the period, joining hull and superstructure to create a clean-cut profile.

The yacht features an intricate and remarkably light interior design by Lazzarini Pickering Architetti. The striking décor is by Loro Piana Interiors, which has chosen classic fabrics for ‘summer on the water’ and used linen in shades of white, blue and malachite, also in some exterior areas.

The first Oasis 40M, Rebeca, is ‘coming home’ as she’s owned by American powerboat racer Tim Ciasulli. The yacht features exterior styling by UK design firm RWD and interiors by New York-based Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.

Its standout feature is the Oasis Deck™, featuring an almost 1,000sqft multifunctional beach area with a 270-degree views around wings that open out, just a few steps from the water, and a waterside swimming pool. The bridge is designed as a multifunctional space with full-height glazing and a futuristic helm station.

Among Benetti’s custom builds, the 47m Bacchanal has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Highlights include a sun deck that features a tailor-made swimming pool clad in mosaic, while the main deck is characterised by a spacious ‘in and out’ veranda featuring a full-width sliding door with frameless glass.

The exterior styling is by the shipyard, while the interiors are a joint effort between Mauricio Gómez de Tuddo, the architect chosen by the Mexican owner for his second Benetti, and the Benetti Interior Style Department, who led a strong ‘Made in Italy’ imprint with brands such as Minotti, Flexform, Giorgetti, Rimadesio, Poltrona Frau and Exteta.

Phuket Open Boat will be held at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina’s M dock on Thursday and Friday (2-7pm), November 11-12 as Thailand begins opening to tourists ahead of the traditional high season for tourism and yachting in Phuket. Following the recent ‘Phuket Sand Box’ policy, Thailand is preparing to welcome vaccinated and Covid-tested tourists from November 1.

Phuket Open Boat has been initiated by Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific while other participating companies include Asia Global Yachting, Asia Marine, Asia Yacht Agency, Boat in the Bay, Boat Lagoon Yachting, Derani Yachts, Lee Marine, Next Yachting and Simpson Yacht Charter.

Rather than a boat show, the event has been described as a luxury yacht inspection, with no on-shore activities and no parties planned. Phuket’s luxury yacht and tourism industry professionals are invited to view the yachts and connect with the yachts’ charter managers and crew onboard the boats, while potential charter clients and yacht buyers are also welcome.

The two-day event has a provisional line-up of 11 yachts, with Northrop & Johnson showing the 86ft Sunseeker Maxxx and the 112ft Moonen Xanadu of London, both for charter, as well as the 62ft Sunreef sailing catamaran In The Wind, for sale.

Then we met with other charter companies and decided to do something together,” said Lies Sol, who heads Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific’s charter business from Phuket.

“Some yachts are for charter and some are listed for sale. There were potential buyers keen to look at yachts for sale when they couldn’t enter Thailand, so we’re welcoming them. We’re happy Thailand will open from November 1 and hopefully potential buyers are able to travel to Phuket.

“Phuket’s yacht charter and sales have suffered due to closed borders and travel restrictions, so now we’d like to send a positive message that Phuket and Thailand are open for tourists and we have beautiful yachts available.”

As Silent-Yachts showcases the first hull of its new Silent 60 in Europe this autumn, the man who oversaw its construction for the past two years is almost 10,000km away in his PMG Shipyard on the coast of Rayong.

Philippe Guenat, the shipyard’s owner and General Manager, is responsible for the construction of not just the first but several hulls of the Silent 60 at PMG, which is named after his initials like his other companies in his native Switzerland and Panama.

Guenat admits that after a testing couple of years building hull one through the Covid period alongside other units of the same model, he felt both relief and pride to see the first unit delivering upon all expectations during sea trials in the Gulf of Thailand before it was delivered to Spain.

“I could see from the reaction of the Silent-Yachts engineers during sea trials that they were very happy. The boat performed perfectly. It made my day to see their reactions,” says Guenat, whose fascinating life includes a career in hospitality, adventurous passions like flying, sailing and scuba diving, plus a deep, ongoing commitment to developing luxury solar-electric yachts.

CATAMARAN SPECIALIST

Promoting itself as a ‘Custom Yacht Builder’, PMG Shipyard focuses on catamarans, whether solar-assisted like the shipyard’s own Heliotrope line launched in 2013 or fully solar-powered like the Silent-Yachts models, which it has also been building since 2019.

In fact, ‘Silent’ and ‘Heliotrope’ signs top the entrances to two of the shipyard’s four largest open-front production halls, each measuring in the region of 50m deep by 25m wide (164ft by 82ft). There are three more halls on the impressive site, which spans 200m along a beachfront road and covers over two hectares (20,800sqm).

PMG Shipyard’s two-hectare site spans 200m along a beachfront road in Rayong

As well as specialising in vinyl infusion, the shipyard packs some serious hardware including a 50-tonne-capacity travel lift that was specially made in China by Magicart. This purpose-built hoist is 9.6m high and has a width of 14.4m so it can transfer cats to the shipyard’s 13m-wide outdoor testing pool, which is 25m long and can take boats up to 80ft.

More recently, the shipyard has welcomed a custom-made boat trailer that took 2½ years to design. Specially made for cats up to 80ft, the trailer enables PMG to move boats across the road, down the beach and into the sea in just 15 minutes, meaning the days of hiring external companies for each boat launch are over.

The new trailer’s ability to retrieve catamarans from the sea also means PMG can now offer refits, previously not possible due to an inability to haul out boats from the shore.

Despite the challenges of Covid, the shipyard employs about 100 staff, with over two-thirds of them graduates of Thailand’s specialist boatbuilding schools in the likes of Khon Kaen, Sukhothai and Nakhon Si Thammarat, an initiative inspired by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a passionate sailor.

Remarkably, Guenat’s family owns a historic shipyard by Lake Geneva that built two boats for the former King of Thailand while he was studying in Switzerland.

SOLAR PIONEERS

Growing up in Geneva, Guenat began boating and flying, inheriting a passion for planes from his father and uncle who were both military pilots. However, he didn’t follow the family tradition in the business world. Instead of a career in private banking, the family business, he forged a career in hospitality that only ended in the middle of this year when he sold his company.

“I loved the five-star industry and became a hotelier,” recalls Guenat, whose hospitality business took him around the world including a decade in Thailand from 1990-2000.

His interest in solar power developed from his flying days when he became friends with fellow pilots Bertrand Piccard, now 63, and later Raphaël Domjan, 49, both renowned adventurers. Piccard’s long list of achievements include becoming the first person to complete a non-stop circumnavigation by balloon (1999) and the first to circumnavigate by solar-powered fixed-wing aircraft (2015-2016).

Domjan’s remarkable career includes the first circumnavigation on a boat using solar energy, which he completed on the 31m catamaran Planet Solar from September 2010-May 2012. He’s also the founder and pilot of SolarStratos, an aeronautical project aimed at flying a solar-powered airplane to the stratosphere.

HOTELIER TO BOATBUILDER

Meanwhile, Guenat wanted to pursue his own dream of building a luxury yacht assisted by solar power, even while he was still managing his hospitality company.

“When we were flying, we were always talking about solar and what could be done, what should be done,” says Guenat, a board member of Domjan’s SolarStratos.

“Bertrand and Raphaël were adventurers, very extreme. I owned a hotel group, but said something should be done in yachting, like covering the roof in solar panels. However, nobody had seen it or done it, so people weren’t interested.”

In 2008, Guenat talked to many shipyards in Europe about his idea for a solar-electric boat, which he was willing to finance, but time and again he was turned away – politely and impolitely.

MEETING OF MINDS

Having lived and worked in Thailand for a decade, Guenat was still a regular visitor to the Kingdom, where he had furniture made for his hotel group in Switzerland. He was also aware of the country’s boatbuilding schools and knew of several small shipyards by Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien, just south of Pattaya, where he tried his luck in 2009.

After drawing a blank at the first three shipyards he tried, Guenat was on the cusp of giving up on his quest when he visited Bakri Cono. Inside, he found open-minded support in the form of South African owner Corrie Lamprecht, who was running the yard with his two sons.

“I had been looking for two years and Corrie was the only person in the industry who showed interest,” Guenat says.

Working with yacht designer Dr Albert Nazarov, who founded Albatross Marine Design in Pattaya in 2006, it took 18 months to develop the solar technology. To put the theory into practice, Guenat built the first Heliotrope 65, which used solar power for all on board systems but not propulsion.

“The boat was a total success and the electrical power produced was outstanding,” Guenat says of the model’s first build, launched in 2013. “We never had a problem with the solar panels or electrical setup, only a problem with a toilet pump!”

Having moved to live full-time in Thailand and become an investor in Bakri Cono, Guenat’s belief in the Heliotrope led to a determination to find a larger site for the shipyard. He eventually found PMG’s current location in Rayong, which had been a boatbuilding facility since 1976 but was then abandoned.

Guenat spent several months and even hired a private detective to track down the owner, eventually securing the site and beginning a seven-month renovation. In 2016, Bakri Cono officially began operations in the new site where they continued building the Heliotrope 48, a model bought by buyers from Hong Kong to Australia.

SILENT PARTNER

The shipyard’s role in building the Silent 60 evolved in 2019, a year in which Guenat fully bought over the company and renamed it PMG.

Bart Kimman, an experienced Hong Kong-based broker then working for Camper & Nicholsons, saw a Silent 55 at a boat show in Phuket and connected Guenat to Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, who was looking for a facility to build the company’s new generation of solar-electric cats.

Without having even met Köhler in person, Guenat had recommended Nazarov to assist on the new designs and then committed to building the first units of the Silent 60, a model announced at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2019.

“Michael then started getting so many orders for the Silent 60. I said I can build them, but the last one will come out in 2025,” Guenat laughs. “They needed to find another shipyard to keep up with demand and found one in Italy.”

PMG Shipyard is also building a Heliotrope 70

Soon after PMG started on the first hulls of the Silent 60, Covid spread across the globe in early 2020, causing delays in shipping parts and forcing restrictions on workers, especially manual labourers. However, Guenat and his team have ploughed through, with five hulls being built simultaneously at one stage. The second Silent 60 had sea trials in August ahead of its delivery to the US.

“It has been a difficult two years,” Guenat says. “We have 100 people in the shipyard, and we’ve had to be so careful. Our builders have to wear masks the whole day in the heat of Thailand, so they’ve done really well.”

GROWING INTEREST

Around the same time PMG started producing the Silent 60, it also looked set to begin building the Waka 80, an 80ft sailing cat designed by Berrett-Racoupeau. The model was also promoted at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival, generating strong interest.

The Waka 80 designed by Berrett-Racoupeau

“The Waka 80 is very appealing because we can build it at the same quality but at a much lower cost than in Europe. After Cannes, we had three appointments, two became extremely serious and finally we were arranging a work schedule for construction with a very famous entrepreneur,” Guenat says.

“We agreed to resume planning and reconvene in January or February, but as Covid became widespread, he had to prioritise his company and staff salaries. It’s an amazing design and we’re ready to build it.”

With its expanded production capacity, well trained workforce, specialist hardware like its testing pool, Magicart travel lift and catamaran trailer, as well as immediate seafront access, PMG Shipyard is better equipped than ever, with repeat business from Silent-Yachts balanced by private orders.

Guenat, though, is happiest about the fact that solar boats have soared in popularity, to the extent that Silent-Yachts announced well over 20 orders for its new-generation models from 60-80ft before the first Silent 60 was even delivered.

Compare that to the past five years, when the brand built a total of 11 units of the Silent 64 and 55 in Turkey and China. Guenat believes the success of electric cars is the main driver behind the growing appeal of solar boats.

A Heliotrope 48 leaving PMG Shipyard

“Environmental awareness has made a big impact, so now there are more people talking about solar, but the person we should thank most is Elon Musk. Tesla created a trend, so once we had a car moving with batteries, people started to believe a boat could move with batteries and Silent-Yachts became more popular,” Guenat says.

“Michael Köhler is like Elon Musk as they both have a special character, are passionate about their job and don’t take no for an answer. And Tesla owners are now the most likely to buy solar boats. Yet just a decade or so ago, when I was talking about solar boats, nobody took me seriously. Now, people understand.”

The flow of yachts between countries in Asia may have dwindled during the Covid era, but ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore is now well positioned to accommodate resident and visiting superyachts following a S$7 million (US$5.2 million) upgrade that was completed earlier this year.

A major reconfiguration increased berths for 80ft-plus superyachts from 15 to 32, with all new and relocated superyacht berths now stern-to in front of the clubhouse. While the total berths remained at 272, the marina can now take yachts up to 67m (220ft) after dredging a new channel with a minimum depth of 4.5m at low tide.

Host of the Singapore Yacht Show from 2011 to 2019, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove has more recently been recognised for its impressive overhaul. In late May, it was named International Marina of the Year 2021 by the Australia-based Marina Industries Association (MIA), the latest of its many awards and certificates.

Furthermore, the marina was recently at 97 per cent occupancy according to management, with the 167ft Feadship Double Haven among resident superyachts berthed in the prime position in front of the clubhouse.

“We decided to future-proof our marina by reconfiguring the berths to better service superyachts and yachts travelling through the region,” says Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO of SUTL Enterprise, which owns the ONE°15 Marina brand.

“We strongly believe the demand for superyacht berths will increase in the region as the boating market in Singapore and Southeast Asia continues to mature. Another plus is that our clubhouse, restaurants, bars and other facilities now overlook a grand display of superyachts.”

Although the pandemic has dramatically reduced international travel for yachts, it has prompted a fresh surge of interest in yachting and charters in Singapore, although activity is dependent on group restrictions in the city-state.

When border and travel restrictions ease, Tay is confident superyacht traffic will quickly resume in Southeast Asia, where Singapore is well positioned as a link between the most popular cruising destinations including Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

ONE°15 Marina’s flagship Sentosa Cove facility is also among Singapore’s most convenient marinas, benefiting from becoming the country’s first private marina to have a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facility two years ago.

“Singapore is the safe haven of choice of the wealthy, so is emerging as the ‘Monaco of Asia’ and a natural hub for superyachts. The pandemic has accelerated the migration of wealthy tycoons to Singapore, with the number of single-family offices in the city doubling since the end of 2019,” Tay says.

“Pleasure boating is enjoying something of a renaissance due to this pandemic. Southeast Asia has many pristine cruising grounds and dive sites, so superyachts typically flock to this region, where Singapore acts as a safe, efficient hub for owners and crews to transit from.”

POWERING UP

The upgraded marina includes new pontoons manufactured in France, while the state-of-the-art service pedestals made of marine-grade anodised aluminium and produced by UK-based Rolec Services. Other new features include a fuel-management mobile app, remote meter reading and automated billing services.

The infrastructure boost includes an increase in power from 2,000Amps to 3,000Amps, a 33 per cent increase in water pressure and a 30 per cent increase in Wi-Fi coverage, meaning boaters can now watch Netflix and YouTube without disruption!

Marina Director James Roy says: “With our additional larger berths and added services and facilities, we’ve positioned ourselves well to accommodate this ‘new normal’. Members have welcomed the new layout because boats now enjoy a more generous berthing space. Many yachts were previously in smaller berths that didn’t allow for easy manoeuvrability, even in light weather conditions.

“We’ve also upgraded our power, as consumption has been rising with the increasing size of yachts. It was a challenge when the marina was at full capacity and all yachts were plugged into their pedestals, but we no longer have this problem, which is great.”

THE PLACE TO BE

The multi-million upgrade has been realised 14 years after the marina opened in 2007, since when it has established itself as the heart of yachting in the city and the hub of the leading luxury yacht

dealers.

Marine Italia (Azimut), Hong Seh Marine (Ferretti Group), Asiamarine (Galeon, Bali) and Boat Lagoon Yachting (Princess, Jeanneau) have offices within the clubhouse, with other dealers based in the adjacent shopping precinct.

Simpson Marine (Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline, Beneteau, Lagoon, Aquila), Asia’s largest yacht dealer, was a long-time tenant of the marina but last year moved to a nearby location beside the boardwalk restaurants facing the yachts.

The facilities and attractive location have helped ONE°15 Marina prove a popular staycation venue during Covid, with its 26 hotel rooms enjoying strong demand.

The marina has offered special packages such as romantic spa getaways for couples and family packages including bicycle rental, board games and customised in-room dining menus, for when restaurants were closed due to restrictions.

Jonathan Sit, Acting General Manager, says: “The staycation market has been strong in Singapore and very competitive, so we tailored our offerings to suit the needs of our members and Singapore residents. However, we have an edge as we are in a tranquil area by the cove. Many members and guests choose our location to enjoy the peaceful marina view and waterfront living lifestyle.”

MARINA NETWORK

There will soon be much more for members and other boaters to enjoy as the Sentosa Cove site is located between two nearby ONE°15 Marina developments, one to the south in Indonesia and one to the north in Malaysia.

ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island in Indonesia is situated on a private island just 8nm south of Sentosa and is scheduled to open in 2023. Neighbouring a five-star resort featuring hotel rooms and villas managed by Accor’s M Gallery Hotel Collection, the marina will have 70 berths, a clubhouse and sea sports centre, plus fuelling and bunkering services.

In Malaysia, across the Johor Strait from northwest Singapore, ONE°15 Marina Puteri Harbour is an ongoing redevelopment of a former facility in the Iskandar Puteri waterfront.

Currently, there’s a 76-berth public marina and a ferry terminal with CIQ, and the development is twinned with the ONE°15 Estuari Sports Centre that opened in late 2020. In addition, an adjoining 207-berth private marina is scheduled to open in 2023 along with a clubhouse, hotel rooms, ballroom, restaurant, floating bar, conference and meeting rooms, spa and fitness centre.

“Due to the size of Singapore, there are relatively few local cruising grounds, so we want to introduce new cruising destinations to our members and boaters,” Sit says. “Yacht owners will have more destinations they can call home, enjoying member benefits, Five Gold Anchor marina facilities, experiencing the same level of hospitality and comfort at various destinations.

“By establishing additional marinas in region, managed by a familiar operator, we hope our members and boaters will enjoy greater confidence and convenience when traveling to and from different countries. Having more marinas will also give us added flexibility to organise leisure boating convoys over long weekends and holidays.”

Further abroad, ONE°15 Marina is also involved as a consultant for the Indonesia Navy Club project in Jakarta and two marinas in China, in Zhongshan near Hong Kong and Suzhou near Shanghai, and will manage them once construction is complete.
