The 2024 Taiwan International Boat Show featured a strong lineup of local and international brands as it adopted an all-outdoor format.

This year’s Taiwan International Boat Show in the yacht-building hub of Kaohsiung featured 77 boats as the event featured an all-outdoor format for the first time. Returning after a six-year break, the four-day show concluded on December 1 and overlapped with the Hong Kong International Boat Show.

The Taiwan show was spread across four marina areas in Kaohsiung, situated on the island’s southwest coast. The Argo Marina focused on European brands, Kha Shing Pier 22 Marina and Horizon City Marina showcased Taiwanese builders, and Basin No. 3 featured sub-40ft boats for sale.

Local builder Kha Shing Enterprise showed three Monte Fino models – the 125 Trideck (125ft), F76 Flybridge (76ft) and 66 Voyager (70ft) – while Horizon’s CC105 Explorer (105ft) and Ocean Alexander’s 28L (95ft) were also among leading local builds.

Azimut Yachts had an impressive four-model display comprising the Fly 68, Fly 53, Magellano 60 and Magellano 53 (pictured above), and had a celebratory event for the launch of the new dealership for Azimut in Taiwan: Supreme Yachts. Absolute showed a Navetta 58, also among yachts from Italian builders.

Simpson Marine displayed a Sanlorenzo SX88 (pictured above, left) superyacht and a Bluegame BGX73, the flagship of Sanlorenzo’s sister brand.

British builder Princess was well represented by its S66, V50 and V40. Amal Yachting, one of Taiwan’s leading yacht dealerships, exhibited a Ferretti Yachts 500, Beneteau Antares 9 and Axopar 28 Cabin. Yacht PinAn showed a Galeon 500 Fly, Cranchi E30 Endurance and Quarken 27 Cabin.

A Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 and four Elan sailing boats were shown by Warhawk Sailing, Taiwan Marine exhibited two Dufour sailing yachts, while Lohas Ocean displayed five sail and motor boats from the Bavaria and Hanse brands.

The show remains both an exhibition of overseas builds for the domestic market, and a showcase of local builders, which have been supplying yachts to international markets – especially the US – since the 1960s. Ocean Alexander and Horizon were founded in 1977 and 1987 respectively.

Jack Chen, longtime Chairman of the Taiwan Yacht Industry Association – which includes 59 local shipyard members, said the show is set to continue its original biennial scheduling, with the next edition slated for 2026.

Chen revealed that Taiwan exported up to US$450 million worth of yachts each year and was well established as one of the world’s leading yacht builders, but that there was much to do to develop the local yachting market.

He explained that while Taiwan shipyards had a reputation for full-custom projects on smaller-scale yachts than elsewhere, some are now enlarging their facilities to be able to build larger hulls.

“Taiwan is planning to start building more marinas,” Chen added. “There’s a lot of interest in waterfront properties, so the goal is to develop hotels and residences with marinas.”

With 50 in-water vessels at last weekend’s 25th edition of the Hong Kong International Boat Show, plus plenty of stands, parties and presentations, Club Marina Cove hosted another well-organised, four-day, event.

This year’s efforts by Club Marina Cove’s organising team netted a particularly strong boat and yacht display across styles, in a size spectrum that pushed its upper limits to close to 90ft in length, with some generous beams that stretched to over 32ft. As well as the 50 boats, vendors specialising in water sports, engines well as other related hardware, software, accessories and yachting-related service providers – including financing, insurance and marine communications attracted about 5,000 visitors.

The mostly recent boat models displayed were produced by many of the best-known shipyards and brands in China, Europe, the UK and the US. In-water and on-land exhibitors included some of the most established companies and dealerships based in Hong Kong and beyond.

“In a quarter of a century, the Hong Kong International Boat Show has evolved from a local event into a highly popular global show for both the boating community and the trade in the Asia-Pacific Region. This is made possible with the long-time support of the boating industry and buyers and visitors from around the world,” said Club Marina Cove General Manager, Winnie Ng of the 2024 event. “We hope the government could recognise the increasing demand for pleasure-boat moorings and berths. An increase could benefit the industry which in turn contributes to more employment and business for shipyards, marine equipment, services and supplies and marine tourism.”

Yacht Style asked a number of exhibitors, how HKIBS 2024 went for them.

On the last day of the show, Adam Waters, DCH Marine Managing Director said, “The confidence in the market has seemed positive, and people are supportive of us showing [UK yacht brand] Sunseeker – even some of our previous Princess clients. Our dedication to clients and aftersales service in the past draws them back.

“The Saxdor 400 GTO we are showing has had a nice interest – some from bigger boat owners; the show always has a high quality of owners visiting.”

“The reception of the Galeon 440 Fly at the Hong Kong International Boat Show was exceptional. Many people stopped to marvel at how spacious the boat becomes when the balconies are dropped down,” said Eric Noyel, CEO of Asiamarine, which also launched a new Hong Kong boat club membership at the show. “I was pleasantly surprised by the number of sailing enthusiasts who came to see our Beneteau sailboats – highlighting the great potential of the sailing market in Hong Kong.

“Our Lagoon Sixty 7 was one of the largest yachts on display, and another new model that got attention was the Lagoon 51, designed for Hong Kong Grade 2 license holders.”

Asiamarine receiving interest in displayed Lagoon models

Distributor Asia Yachting hosted the other largest catamaran on show: The Prestige M8. “We were delighted to bring the Prestige M-Line range of multihull motoryachts to the Hong Kong International Boat Show this year and to display it to the public for the very first time,” said Tanguy Tertrais, Asia-Pacific Sales Director of Prestige Yachts.

“The Prestige M8 received a lot of attention from visitors, especially from yacht owners looking at her unique architecture and unrivalled volume of space.”

Other stands to show large-format motoryachts alongside their other models were Ferretti Group Asia-Pacific, where the 88ft 8in Wally WHY200 was striking with its minimalist exterior; and Simpson Marine’s expansive Sanlorenzo SL86 and SX88 were also very imposing.

Meme Poon, founder and General Manager at Grandtech International Engineering – displaying two types of filters at the show: one for fuel, the other for drinking water – said, “We had good responses for our two newly launched products. We had interest in Go Filter, which cleans the fuel, set to the owners’ preferences.

“And our French Eaux water purifiers had captains and ‘boat boys’ saying the system would save time and space rather than having bottled water brought on board. Brokers said they’d consider offering to clients, and a Chinese shipyard showed interest.”

Liam Hailstone, Commercial Operations Manager at Marine Service Asia, showcasing yacht after-care and maintenance services said feedback to the company’s displayed large-format Cox Marine outboard motors had engaged visitors. “The CXO300 and 350 were a talking point with a lot of people we’ve met,” he said on the last day of the show. “Especially when they hear about the demonstration boat we are building that has two of these mounted at the stern. It’s been a good show for us.”

Lawrence Chow, Project Manager at China Pacific Marine distributor and brokerage, and Chair of both the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA) and the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (Icomia) Asia Working Group said, “This year is the most successful boat show ever – with about 50 boats – it’s one of the most impressive boat shows in Asia. And a number of owners brought friends in who were thinking about buying their first boat, which was good to see.

Lawrence Chow at one of two presentations for the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association, which he chairs

“As an exhibitor, it’s very well organised – we had a delivery on the afternoon of the first day and the marina was so helpful getting it in place. And one of our boats, the Jeanneau 55 [an Asia premiere], had to be moved from the show before it ended, for delivery to Hainan, due to weather conditions.

“As a member of the Asia Icomia Group: as we had a few shows happening at the same time or close to each other this year, it would be nice to have a little more coordination on this aspect.”

On Day Two of the event, the HKBIA held three events. In one, a conference on recent marine events in Hong Kong, Chow mentioned that the group’s Economic Impact Survey sent to members some months ago had received only two replies, so the Committee will examine how else to get more input across the industry on this.

Chow noted that the government in Hong Kong has recently made announcements regarding marine tourism being a good avenue to explore. He hoped an HKBIA letter recently sent to the government on this matter, containing proposals, a number of which date back a few years, may have helped officials notice the opportunities and needs in the marine industry and by leisure users. Hong Kong berths and breakwater sites were at the top of the wish list – followed by needs for more infrastructure for boating/marine activities, waterfront restaurants, watersports facilities and holding major racing/rowing events to make use of the government mega-events funding.

Other conference points included a report on the HKBIA’s solidification of better relations with the Hainan Boating Association, and the Icomia Asia Group looking for more in the industry to get involved

The largest parties and networking events of note at the boat show comprised of the annual HKBIA Cocktail, Simpson Marine’s 40th Anniversary Party, Fraser Asia’s Superyacht VIP Night, DCH Marine’s by-invitation cocktail held over two late afternoons/evening, and the Jeanneau 55 launch party, held jointly by parent-company office Beneteau Asia-Pacific and the brand’s dealership China Pacific Marine.

Hayes was delighted with the overall support ahead of the show’s third edition and first at Phuket Yacht Haven, a 15-20 minute drive from Phuket International Airport.

“Phuket Yacht Haven is an excellent venue for not only the event but its location in the north of Phuket also showcases the beauty of Phuket and Phang Nga Bay,” he said.

“Being near the airport and many five-star hotels is convenient for visitors flying in for the show. With this better access and an increase in products on display, we expect to see visitor numbers grow, especially from high-net-worth individuals from across Asia-Pacific and around Thailand.”

Entries are open for the 2025 29er Asian Championship, which will be held in Hong Kong from February 11-16 as part of the Sun Hung Kai & Co Hong Kong Race Week. The small version of the Olympic class men’s 49er and women’s 49erFX, the 29er is a two-person skiff where the crew trapezes while the skipper hikes from the wing. As the targeted Olympic youth development skiff, it continues to grow in popularity across Asia, with the class raced in Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.

Hosted in Hong Kong for a third successive year, the 29er Asian Championship is co-organised by the International 29er Association, Sailing Federation of Hong Kong, China, and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Racing will take place around Tai Tam and Beaufort Island on the south side of Hong Kong Island, as it was for the last two 29er Asian Championships and the 2018 29er World Championship.

Peter Davies, Regatta Chair of the Sun Hung Kai & Co Hong Kong Race Week, said he anticipates continued growth in the 29er Asian Championship, with up to 28 teams from around the continent expected to participate in the 2025 event.

“We are looking forward to welcoming back young sailors at all stages of racing, from the developmental fleets all the way to Olympic classes like the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7, together with the 29er Asian Championship,” Davies said.

The boutique Dutch builder has revealed Carla Guilhem Design’s vision for the second unit of the Edge 65.

Van der Valk has released Carla Guilhem Design’s vision for the outdoor areas and interiors of the second Edge 65, currently in build at the Dutch yard’s Waalwijk facility in southern Netherlands.

Carla Guilhem, Creative Director of the Miami-based studio, admitted her new designs were inspired by cruising on the model’s first unit, which can reach 40 knots and was part of the Van der Valk display at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida.

Currently based in the Bahamas and designed with a shallow draft and outboard engines, the first Edge 65 – featuring an Aston Martin Racing Green hull colour – was developed by Van der Valk as “the ultimate weekender” for repeat clients who previously commissioned the 27.5m LeVen (2019) and 34m all-custom Lady Lene (2023).

The Edge 65 in build has the same hull design as the first and shares a similar layout, but offers a fresh configuration for the main saloon and an all-new decor that Guilhem hopes will appeal to a wide audience.

Covered dining on the aft deck

“The inspiration for my design came from the times I have spent on the first Edge 65. Even at the high speeds of which this boat is capable, the trips were amazingly stable and relaxing with no slamming. She rides the waves like a comfortable Bentley and the design reflects this with a masculine, car-like aesthetic,” Guilhem said.

“The Edge 65 is a seriously cool yacht that offers a fabulously fast drive, and my new design aims to encapsulate the onboard experience. Clean lines and shapes, and very light spaces are blended with grey and black tones to provide an easy-on-the-eye sense of harmony. From the delightful outdoor dining to the ultra-comfy cabins and bathrooms, this yacht is equally pleasurable on day trips and overnight cruises.”

Cor D. Rover designed the exterior of the Edge 65, while Studio Delta Naval Architects and Petestep Hull Design collaborated on the naval architecture. The second Edge 65 is available for sale and Van der Valk stated that “fast decision-makers can still opt for the exterior livery of their choice”.

While the first Edge 65 had a dedicated bar area, the second unit has a family-friendly feel with a more conventional saloon layout. The aft saloon doors can fully open and connect to an aft deck, which features a covered dining area and a pair of sofas between two fold-out aft bulwarks, while four Mercury Verado V12 outboards provide the power.

Van der Valk said Guilhem’s “smooth style and sophisticated look … perfectly captures the charm and charisma of this award-winning weekender while taking the sleek and colourful onboard vibe to new heights”.

Jacuzzis and pools are tucked away amid sleek exterior lines created by the Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard studio

Design ideas, first explored in creation of a 68m Lürssen in 2007, were further developed in 2014 with arrival of the much-lauded 95m Kismet now called Whisper. The latest 122m beauty is surely the owner’s pièce-de-résistance to date.

From her distinctive jaguar-adorned bow to her imposing six decks and thoughtful stern arrangements, Kismet is a homage to innovation, and to blending unique style elements that encompass sleek Nuvolari Lenard exterior lines and sophisticated Reymond Langton interiors.

Originally introduced by Florida’s famous car and superyacht dealer Jim Moran, who met this Asia-born owner as they both made fortunes in the American automobile industry, the current project, known as JAG before her Kismet credentials were revealed, benefitted from having long-time owner’s reps Captain Kyle Fultz and wife Gerry keeping watch during her five-year construction. Some slight delays occurred because the build spanned the Covid era.

In the beach club, we liked the enclosed hanging basket seats that will presumably provide a little movement if the Quantum zero-speed stabilisers are doing their job

The vessel is fully custom, with many personal touches throughout, but like her popular predecessor she is now available for charter via bespoke British brokers Cecil Wright. Rates are from €3 million a week, and Indo-Asia-Pacific cruises may be on the horizon.

Her owner is fairly high-profile himself, as he runs two football teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars in America’s NFL – hence the big cat on Kismet’s bow – and Fulham soccer team in the British Premier League, which he bought from former Harrods boss Mohamed Al-Fayed a decade ago. Son Tony runs the All Elite Wrestling franchise.

v

The owner’s favoured American NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars account for Kismet’s unusual jaguar bow motif

Kismet is a Turkish word which dictionaries define as meaning “personified power that determines the course of future events”, but it is understood more generally to refer to one’s destiny or fate. It has been the title of several Hollywood films, and a stage play.

“To execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary,” says the builder’s Managing Partner Peter Lürssen.

“We are very proud of Kismet as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owner’s requirements, guided by our core focus on expert engineering, beautiful design, and being at the forefront in developing sustainable technologies.”

Main deck aft; six decks allow plenty of options to choose a favoured setting, and there are many nooks and crannies hidden in plain sight

The 122m vessel squeezes in under 5,000GT at 4,918GT. She carries two guests in the enormous owner’s apartment, and 12 others in six substantial suites, plus two auxiliary suites that can be pressed into service. A total of 37 crew are accommodated in 19 cabins.

Top speed is 18 knots, and the vessel has a 6,000-nautical-mile range at 12 knots, powered principally by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73Ls, producing 3,200kW at 1,970rpm. She is flagged by the Republic of the Marshall Islands in Micronesia.

Many pioneering features include an innovative propulsion system that allows short-distance voyaging on electrical power alone, for example operating in stealth mode when entering of leaving harbours or anchorages without disturbing the neighbours. She also features a 4.9m x 1.3m pane of glass, by far the largest single piece of structural glazing ever fitted on a yacht’s transom.

Lurssen, Lürssen, Kismet, Nuvolari Lenard, Carlo Nuvolari, Reymond Langton, Pascale Reymond, Jim Moran

Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton says guests will move around distinctive design features of the vessel in different journeys

Says Lürssen: “Given that this area is an integral part of the hull, regulations typically restrict such windows to a maximum 60cm x 40cm. To overcome this limitation, Lürssen invested a year-and-a-half in rigorous stress and pressure tests with the classification society Lloyd’s and manufacturers. This process included dropping steel weights onto the glass to assess its residual strength.”

The newly engineered glass plays a significant role in the design, as a great deal of the exterior is either glass windows, or the structural steel hull and aluminium superstructure is clad in glass, allowing the design to seamlessly flow from window to structure and back again.

In certain areas of the bulwark, particularly the Nemo Lounge used for underwater viewing or as a cinema, the glass has an impressive thickness of 13cm, yet maintains excellent clarity.

Lurssen, Lürssen, Kismet, Nuvolari Lenard, Carlo Nuvolari, Reymond Langton, Pascale Reymond, Jim Moran

Nemo Lounge can be used to view over-and-under water activity in vicinity of the vessel, using specially-strengthened glass, or as a classic cinema to watch feature films

Apart from the Art Deco silver jaguar figurehead, a few American footballs are in evidence, and other design features, some hidden, some in plain sight, “come together to create a totally unique and personal yacht, inspired by the owner’s favourite people and places”, says Thorsten Göckes, the Lürssen Project Manager.

Carlo Nuvolari of Nuvolari Lenard said: “Kismet was a perfect project for us, because it was for an owner with considerable technical knowledge and great passion. This allowed us to make functional, stylistic and technical proposals knowing that they would be understood from all points of view. In its external design – the stairs, detailing, furnishings – Kismet is a yacht rich in shapes and choice of materials.”

Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton told media in Monaco that the owner wanted “an exceptional interior design that makes you travel through time and space”.

Spectacular principal salon takes its inspiration from Le Roi Soleil, The Sun King Louis XIV and the ornate Parisian palace of Versailles

Kismet is not just a yacht or a home,” she said. “The yacht is a journey where all your passion and senses are challenged. The main idea is that, as the vessel is very large, the owners and guests should find their way and recognise each area by the design, and they should experience many different journeys.

Kismet is a time capsule, from the glorious parties of Versailles under Le Roi Soleil, The Sun King, Louis XIV, in the La Galerie des Glaces, to the matinee theatre of the roaring ’20s and Art Deco era.”

The multi-purpose top deck, nestled below the mast, is the perfect getaway. There is a large jacuzzi forward, with a special shallow area, making it safe and accessible for young children. The largest sunbeds on the boat surround the jacuzzi and double as an outside bed and star-gazing spot on warm nights.

The top deck is another design delight

Directly under the mast is a stone-topped dining table which seats 14 guests. Three television screens, a bar, beer fridge and gas-fired pizza oven ensure this is a social and casual place to relax. At the top of the staircase that leads down to the bridge deck aft is a round overhang, which is set up as a DJ station during parties on the deck below.

The large party space is multifunctional and can be turned into a helipad, an outdoor cinema with a projector screen, or another relaxation area with six hammocks and various sunbeds. Shade is provided via removable sun awnings on carbon-fibre posts.

The bridge deck houses the large, dark leather-clad bridge, equipped with state-of-the art navigation equipment and paperless technology. The ship’s office and a guest-quality captain’s cabin are located aft of the bridge. Whilst there is no notable interior guest space on this deck, to service the outside area, there is another large day head.

Top to toe, Kismet is a statement in design excellence

This deck marks the highest stop for the guest elevator, which features a white leather sofa and a bespoke églomisé artwork by Miriam Ellner on the feature wall. The guest staircase begins its long, elegant curve down to the lower deck from here.

Complementing the staircase’s descent is a feature wall and art installation, made up of bronze-coloured pipe light fixtures of varying heights, with Venetian fabric panels behind them, shifting from sky blue to dark green as you descend.

The 11m pool offers a swim-up bar with service and facilities either side

The pool deck is home to an 11m mosaic-lined swimming pool. The inside of the pool glitters in a kaleidoscope of blues, with miniature tiles surrounding an artistically styled grey ‘K’. The exterior of the pool has its own mosaic, this time in cream and greys. A large waterfall feature cascades into the pool from the deck above, and there is a fixed reclining section with massage jets and a swim-up bar facing the dining area.

This deck hosts most of the onboard dining and features a Teppanyaki station as well as a barbecue grill. An unusual choice, the main dining table on this deck is at bar height, with fixed barstools, and seats up to 14 guests. LED lights throughout the space ensure everything twinkles.

The Ibiza-style pool deck lounge transforms into a multicoloured disco at night

One of the yacht’s standout features is a large gold and crystal chandelier. Spanning 4.5m and suspended through a three-deck atrium, it ties the guest lobby spaces on each deck together.

Forward of the pool deck is the owner’s office, with private access down to the master suite below. The office is designed to be dual-purpose, with convertible sofas that can also be used as an extra guest cabin.

It features a full-service bathroom, complete with dual sinks, a bespoke Crystal Caviar Art Deco mirror, and a large shower, all decked out in Nero Marquina marble and platinum-coloured leather-embossed walls.

A custom Silverlining desk on the port side complements the room, and the focal point is the large red L-shaped sofa, from which to enjoy both the scenery and the large TV that drops down from the ceiling.

“This is the core and the brains behind this fabulous yacht,” says Pascale Reymond. “All directed and orchestrated by the owner from his black, silver and touch of lipstick-red office. He is very much the director and producer – a Chicago 1930s film director – and his office is the heart of it all.”

The master suite commands sweeping views and is sumptuously outfitted with a cream merino wool carpet, high-gloss walnut marquetry and embroidered Sabina Fay Braxton feature walls

The master suite, located on the deck below, occupies more than half of the interior guest space on this deck. It is opulent and ornate, with a cream merino wool carpet, high-gloss walnut marquetry, and embroidered Sabina Fay Braxton feature walls.

Adjacent to the master cabin is a recessed exterior space featuring a jacuzzi pool, along with ample private sunbathing and dining areas. A TV that folds out to face the jacuzzi adds to the luxury.

Forward on the bow is the touch-and-go helipad, certified for a Eurocopter 155. This area can also be converted into an NBA-certified basketball court and a pickleball court, thanks to removable nets and hoops.

Aft of the master cabin are his-and-her bathrooms and dressing rooms, both designed in a similar style. Dark Oriental elements, bespoke Crystal Caviar mirrors with floral details, and Silverlining bespoke marquetry walls and sliding door panels create a luxurious sanctuary.

Centre stage in the saloon is a grand piano designed by Boganyi, a futuristic self-playing piece that draws on automotive design cues. The saloon includes a large bar with a gold glass and black marble finish, and a convivial sofa arrangement with low tables provides for intimate evenings among friends and family.

Guest accommodation starts on the principal deck, with four stunning guest suites amidships, each featuring its own unique theme. Drawing inspiration from nature to the owners’ favourite fashion brands, the suites differ in style but are equal in size.

One suite boasts bespoke wallpaper with Lalique crystal dahlias and swallows, complemented by a matching Lalique headboard and door handles. Each suite has a chaise longue tucked in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows with Avodire Curl high-gloss wood elements.

The dressing rooms are spacious for guest cabins, and the en-suite bathrooms all include his-and-hers sinks. Intricate and ornate vanities, along with bold marbles, ensure each room is completely unique.

Kismet has seven cabins, including the master suite, as well as the third flexible cabin on the lower deck and the owner’s study, which can also convert into guest accommodation, allowing the yacht to sleep up to 18 guests in total.

The lower deck’s primary purpose is as a full-service wellness centre. It features a complete Technogym, a dive store, yoga lounge and juice bar, relaxation room with lounging chairs and waterfall shower, bathtub for mud baths, massage and reflexology area, firepit, dry ice room, plunge pool with waterfall, sauna, hammam, shaving station, ice and snow room, and a cryogenic chamber with a temperature that drops to -85 degrees Celsius.

The spa is themed around a Balinese sanctuary, with elements such as a gold statue, decorative glass with green reeds, and stone walls featuring recessed planters and faux plants that resemble a tropical forest.

Tender storage is located forward on the main deck and houses an 11.2m Hodgson limo, 11.8m Naiad for 16 guests, 8.24m Riva and 6.3m Fassmer. Toys stored here include jet skis, Seabobs, e-foils, slide and large floating platform. Additionally, there is a full dive storage room located aft of the spa. The Italian builder signed five orders for the flagship of its semi-displacement series before the launch of hull one.

The SD132 is Sanlorenzo’s largest composite yacht

Sanlorenzo, represented across Asia-Pacific by Simpson Marine, has launched the first unit of the SD132, the new flagship of a semi-displacement range that includes the SD90, SD96 and SD118. Featuring exterior and interior design by Zuccon International Project, the 40.7m superyacht has a beam of 8.47m (27ft 9in) and is the Italian shipyard’s biggest composite-built yacht to date.

Sanlorenzo has described the 132-footer’s volume of 420GT as “an unparalleled volume for a yacht of this size”. The space is achieved largely through an asymmetrical design featuring just one exterior walkway on the main deck, to port, and one on the upper deck, to starboard, so “balancing the weight distribution and optimising the volumes”, according to Sanlorenzo.

The SD132 has a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 3,200nm at economical speed, with two 1,650hp MAN V12 or 1,622hp CAT C32 engines.

Tommaso Vincenzi, President of Sanlorenzo’s Yacht Business Unit, said: “We are thrilled with the launch of the SD132 project, which embodies the perfect combination of significant size, innovative design and timeless elegance in true Sanlorenzo style.

Sanlorenzo, SD132, semi-displacement, launch, Tommaso Vincenzi, Bernardo Zuccon, Zuccon International Project

The asymmetrical SD132 has a volume of 420GT

“The exceptional market response has been confirmed by the five contracts already signed before the launch, demonstrating the great success and appreciation this yacht is receiving among owners. Every detail of the SD132 reflects the dedication and passion of our team, which has once again sought to challenge traditional limits related to onboard space and volume, achieving a remarkable result.”

The SD132 continues the legacy of the SD line, whose former models included the SD92, SD112 and SD126. However, appealing new features include the expansive beach area, where fold-down doors aft and on both sides create waterside terraces on three sides, contributing to 70sqm of walkable space just above water level.

Just forward of the covered beach club is a port side garage that can accommodate a 6.25m tender stored laterally and has transverse launching capability, a feature typically found on larger yachts. Forward on the main deck is an additional hangar designed to house toys or a rescue boat.

The first SD132 is lowered into the water

Sanlorenzo has achieved greater interior spaces and volume by utilising asymmetrical design, which it first developed to much acclaim in its new SL series models.

On the main deck, the aft cockpit leads into the saloon, which starts with a dining table to port and leads to the main lounge. Forward is an enormous 55sqm master suite, which includes a TV lounge, office area, fridge, full-width bedroom and full-width walk-in dressing room, and en-suite bathroom to port. The lower deck includes four guest cabins and the crew area with a dinette and laundry facilities.

The upper deck has a huge, open aft deck, with a lounge area aft and a covered dining table. The interior includes a skylounge with sliding doors to starboard facing a fold-out balcony, while forward is the wheelhouse and captain’s cabin. The sundeck is another huge outdoor space, offering 85sqm of floor space, with the middle half covered by a hard top.

The SD132’s first unit offers an interior design language “inspired by the colours of the earth and nature itself … featuring soft tones and textures that emphasise sensory engagement for a tactile experience”, Sanlorenzo stated. Decor ranges from the bathroom furnishings’ stone-like cement finish to the owner suite’s combination of dark and light woods.

CGI of the Sanlorenzo SD132 designed by Zuccon International Project

Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project said: “The interiors reflect the stylistic journey undertaken by the studio, aimed at enhancing a sense of naturalness and establishing a sensory connection between the owner and the yacht. A material mood board and earth-inspired colours create authentic, balanced and welcoming environments.

“The exteriors also demonstrate a commitment to research. Innovative layout solutions and technological flexibility seamlessly integrate the yacht with the surrounding nature, emphasising the liveability of the spaces.”

As well as the SD series, Sanlorenzo’s composite Yacht ranges include the SL planing line (SL86, SL86A, SL90A, SL96A, SL106A, SL120A), SX crossover models (SX76, SX88, SX100, SX112) and SP smart performance coupes (SP92, SP110).

The shipyard’s metal Superyacht lines comprise Steel (50Steel, 52Steel, 57Steel, 62Steel, 68/73Steel), Explorer (47m 500Exp), X-Space (44m) and Alloy (44m).

Jaguar’s rebranding causes global stir

Jaguar’s rebranding causes global stir

SHARE

Call it cringey or cool — Jaguar’s rebranding exercise certainly turned heads with its unusual approach with new vibrant yet controversial videos and press images.
Words: Joe Lim

The internet is perplexed by Jaguar’s latest message due to its revolutionary rebranding effort. In contrast to earlier campaigns, the absence of a car in the new images led PR heavyweights and industry veterans to write off Jaguar’s PR efforts as a failure.

The new Jaguar rebranding campaign video that features quirky models, nary a car in sight. Image: Jaguar

Fans who have followed Jaguar for years have enjoyed driving some of the cars, most admirably the F-Type. So, Jaguar’s new rebranding exercise certainly turned heads worldwide in the luxury car segment. People were curious to see what the rebranding was all about. The images created were colourful and vibrant, encompassing many models looking far too serious for what they were decked up in.

The press pack did not offer any new car images or a teaser. Jaguar fans were definitely eager to see the upcoming Jaguar concept car, which will be unveiled next month.

The first of Jaguar’s anticipated three ultra-luxury EVs will be displayed at Miami Art Basel next month. However, the first launch is not expected until 2026 — so it will not happen soon. Although the Miami event appears appropriate for this rebranding campaign, many wonder if it is the ideal setting for revealing a high-end vehicle of the future. I hope the Jaguar Design Vision Concept is more than just another strange piece of art.

Jaguar’s new type face. Image: Jaguar.

With a history spanning more than a century, Jaguar abruptly concluded that the brand’s poor sales performance was due to its image. The British automaker threw out everything, including its ethos, logo, and typeface, to address its issues. It then startled everyone with an odd public relations effort. A graphic package that appears to mimic the fonts used by Smart in its emblem replaced the recognisable Jaguar logo, which has persisted since 1945.

The rebranding video that kicked off the campaign made things stranger. For most people, the Jaguar brand conveys elegance and sophistication tempered with its automobile heritage. However, the video served up shock therapy. Perhaps it was necessary to drum up the brand’s image, considering that the marque has fallen behind in sales and identity.

One of the bold phrases fronting the Jaguar rebranding exercise. Image: Jaguar

In 2023, Jaguar sold less than 67,000 vehicles globally, nearly half as much as it did during the 2019–2020 fiscal year, which included the pandemic lockups. By presenting a new brand image that would be more enticing to auto purchasers, the rebranding campaign seeks to reverse the situation.

However, this is by no means Jaguar’s most contentious action. In preparing for the total brand overhaul, new cars were taken off-sale more than a year ago — with only the upcoming new all-electric car to be unveiled at Art Basel that will only go on sale in 2026. This means Jaguar is ready to keep steady on their downward trend by not introducing newness into the brand and hedge all bets in the new PR move to regain market leadership.

The new Jaguar font style does not convey luxury but depicts minimalism. People questioned how the British marque would fend off competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which are in the luxury segment.

A Tilda Swinton-esque model raises eyebrows among Jaguar fans. Image: Jaguar.

The promo video features a Tilda Swinton-like model swinging a hammer with the caption “Break Moulds,” taking inspiration from the 1984 Apple Macintosh commercial that is still remembered well. Some Jaguar fans said portraying a stale company as imaginative and bold was a reasonable effort.

Naysayers of the rebranding campaign say the new logos are questionable. They say the campaign tried to build a new brand identity on the mantra of “copy nothing” while doing the exact opposite in a strange effort.

Even the new Jaguar logo gets reimagined. Image: Jaguar.

Lulu Cheng Meservey — co-founder of Rostra PR group — made clear the difficulty Jaguar faces by pointing out that sales in the US have decreased by 70% over the last five years. This problem puts the sale of automobiles at the top of any rebranding campaign, which should have emphasised demonstrating that Jaguar recognised the issues and the reasons behind the downturn. In addition to a perplexing market positioning, its new aesthetics are realised with antiquated technologies.

Sunreef Yachts President Francis Lapp and his wife Munira attended the opening of the Sunreef Eco Club at the Citychamp Dartong Yacht Club in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province on China’s southeast coast. Fuzhou is situated almost equidistant between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

“With the Sunreef Eco Club in Fuzhou, we unlock new possibilities and enter a dynamic and proactive local yachting scene,” said Lapp, who founded Sunreef in 2002. “The region provides an outstanding environment to grow and keep promoting sustainable yachting technologies.”

The Sunreef Eco Club’s high-profile opening ceremony featured many VIPs including the President of the China Sports Chamber of Commerce, swimmer Luomeng Ren, a former world champion in the women’s 800m, and former China volleyball star Ting Qiao.

The Sunreef Eco Club will “serve as a showroom and promote clean boating locally”, according to the Polish shipyard, which is the world leader in large luxury power and sailing catamarans and a pioneer of energy-efficient luxury yachts through its Eco series and green technology.

Nina Lee Boudoul, Sunreef’s Director of Asia Pacific, delivered a presentation on the vision and mission of the Sunreef Eco Club, emphasising its role in fostering sustainable yachting practices in the region.

As a key part of Sunreef’s strategy in Asia-Pacific and globally, the selection of Citychamp Dartong Yacht Club was due to its prime location and its vision of sustainable development, including its support of electric vessels.

“The successful launch of the Sunreef Eco Club not only reinforces Sunreef Yachts’ dedication to sustainability but also enhances its presence in the Asia-Pacific market,” Sunreef stated.

Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific hosted a spectacular grand opening for its new Sanlorenzo Australia office at the Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney. Event highlights included Sanlorenzo’s SD126 semi-displacement tri-deck superyacht and SX76 crossover yacht, which were berthed in front of the office beside the BGX63 by sister brand Bluegame, marking its country debut.

The event featured exclusive partnerships with Chopard and Technogym, and was spearheaded by Simpson Marine, whose representation of Sanlorenzo and Bluegame expanded from Asia to Asia-Pacific earlier this year, following the dealership’s acquisition by the Sanlorenzo Group.

Luca Cristino, CEO of Simpson Marine Group, attended the Sanlorenzo Australia office opening along with other senior management including Nick Stratton, Simpson Marine’s Chief Sales Officer and Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific’s Vice-President of Sales.

“Sanlorenzo’s expansion into Australia is a testament to our commitment to serving the Asia-Pacific region with excellence and precision. The debut of the Bluegame BGX63 and our iconic models, the SX76 and SD126, signals the next chapter in our mission to bring the ultimate yachting experience to new audiences,” Cristino said.

“Australia is already home to several Sanlorenzo yachts, and our aim is to expand this elite community, with more exceptional vessels arriving soon. With this new office, we also aim to build deeper connections with our clients and redefine yachting luxury in Australia.”

Cristino cited Sydney, the Gold Coast and Perth as “epicentres for yachting activities”, with the Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef and Sydney Harbour among the country’s leading cruising areas.

Australia is among the world’s top 10 countries for superyacht ownership and the leader in Asia-Pacific, with at least 145 yachts over 30m according to the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Market Report 2024 by Superyacht Times. Joachim Howard, Country Sales Manager for Sanlorenzo Australia, was among speakers at the event and spoke of his belief in the country’s yachting industry.

“The opening of Sanlorenzo Australia emphasises our confidence in the Australian market as a key player in the global yachting scene. Australia has long been recognised as a thriving market for luxury yachts, with over 2.5 million recreational boats registered across the country, including a significant segment of high-end motoryachts and superyachts,” Howard said.
