YYachts by Michael Schmidt Yachtbau is building a new Y8 designed by Palma studio Surge Projects that offers 20 per cent more volume than its predecessor.

YYachts is developing a new version of its Y8 that develops upon Cool Breeze, the brand’s first yacht. Built for the brand’s owner Michael Schmidt, Cool Breeze was followed by individual Y8 orders, but YYachts has now developed a modified 80ft platform that offers 20 per cent more interior volume.

The German builder produces fast, luxurious carbon-composite sailing yachts at its shipyard in Wieck on the Baltic Sea. Its most popular model is its Bill Tripp-designed Y7 (70ft), with over a dozen sales, while it’s also producing the first units of the flagship Y9, a 90-footer based on the custom-built Tripp 90 launched earlier this year.

The Y8 sits between the Y7 and Y9

The Y8 sits in the middle of the range and the first three units of the new version have already been sold, with the first hull for a Swiss customer.

For the new Y8, the YYachts design and development team based in Palma de Mallorca in Spain cooperated with Surge Projects, founded by Javier Jaudenes in 2012. Surge Projects designs have won many trophies and developed yachts as Win Win or the Café Racer.

The new Y8 is designed by Surge Projects

Dirk Zademack, CEO of YYachts, said: “Javier Jaudenes is an excellent fit for YYachts with his previous projects; he is a great addition to Bill Tripp. We build fast boats that are both safe and easy to handle. That they also display outstanding design is a given.”

In contrast to the previous Y8, the new model has a wider stern and a mast set further back, which Jaudenes predicts will result in high speeds.

YYachts offers luxurious, light interiors

“The jib will provide a lot of speed. A lot of R&D results from previous projects have gone into the Y8,” said Jaudenes, who said the fact that YYachts builds from carbon suits his studio’s philosophy.

“It’s an essence of our experience and will be fast, but at the same time very safe under any conditions. The new Y8 is a lot of fun. I would describe her as a good-mood yacht.”

YYachts, CEO, Dirk Zademack, Michael Schmidt, Surge Projects, Javier Jaudenes, Bill Tripp, Y7, Y8, Cool Breeze, Y9, Tripp 90, Wieck, Tripp 90The Y8 offers several interior layouts

The new Y8 includes a transverse garage in the stern, self-tacking jib and separate crew access in the cockpit and flat deckhouse, where optimally placed windows prevent the yacht from overheating.

The increased volume allows for many different layout options. The owner’s suite including a separate saloon can be located either in the bow or in the stern with direct access to the cockpit. The galley can be installed open or closed, while three or four cabins can be fitted.

Options include an aft owner’s suite with direct cockpit access

By moving the engine room below the saloon floor, the yacht has a lower centre of gravity and a better balance, also increasing speed. Due to the slightly raised saloon floor, owners and guests can enjoy an unobstructed view of the sea from the saloon.

Schmidt, who founded YYachts in 2016, said: “For me, this new Y8 is a very special design. After all, I founded the shipyard with the first Y8. In between, there were quite a few orders. But yachting is always evolving due to new building materials, different rigs and the regatta scene. This is what inspires us at YYachts to continually develop new products.”

For the 22nd straight year, Azimut-Benetti has topped the Global Order Book for 24m-plus superyachts. And for the second year, Italy’s Ferretti Group and British builders Sunseeker and Princess are not included on the list, with Boat International stating last year it was “unable to independently verify their total length of construction”.

Azimut-Benetti topped the 2022 list with 128 projects totalling 4,601m in length, for an average length of 35.9m. Its number of projects rose 28 per cent and total length increased 31 per cent from the 2021 ranking, when it had 100 projects and a total length of 3,521m.

Taiwan’s Ocean Alexander overtook Feadship to move from fourth to third, jumping from 35 projects and 1,119m in the 2021 ranking to 47 projects and 1,494m in 2022.

German megayacht builder Lurssen is listed in fifth – topping average project length at 70.1m – ahead of Italy’s Overmarine (Mangusta), Dutch conglomerate Damen Yachting (also Amels), The Italian Sea Group (Admiral, Tecnomar), Taiwan’s Horizon and Italy’s Baglietto.

Azimut-Benetti’s order book accounted for 12.5 per cent of the total number of projects recorded at 186 shipyards on five continents. The Group has reported an order book totalling €1.5 billion (US$1.7 billion) and value of production for the current season forecast to exceed €1 billion, a 20 per cent rise on 2020/2021.

Giovanna Vitelli, Vice President of Azimut-Benetti and daughter of Azimut founder Paolo Vitelli, said: “Our Group owes its long-standing leadership to the ability to build highly innovative yachts that are greatly appreciated by the market and cover the typically Italian size range of up to 50m. But this important segment is also joined by numerous larger steel and aluminium superyacht projects, traditionally the preserve of northern European shipyards.

The design of the two 28 Molokai models takes inspiration from native Hawaiian watercraft developed for the rigours of island hopping in the tough Pacific waters. Lex Raas (Leader, Issue 60 – click to read Part 1), President of Aquila Power Catamarans, has a house in Hawaii and knows the waters well.

“At Aquila, we continue our quest to be global leaders of innovative catamarans. Aquila enters the offshore segment with a modern twist on a proven Hawaiian layout by shifting the paradigm of innovative boats and designs,” said Lex Raas (Leader, Issue 60 – click to read Part 2), who helped form Aquila, a collaboration between US dealer MarineMax and Asian builder Sino Eagle Group.

Both hulls are designed with a sharp bow entry that tapers to a planing pad. Unlike most outboard offshore power catamarans, the hulls are spaced wide apart and the broad stance allows for expansive side decks surrounding the centre console. The twin outboards are set wide apart to create a secure, smooth and efficient ride at any speed.

Here Comes The Sun recently stopped in London following an extensive refit at the Damen shipyard in Vlissingen that included extending its length to 89m.

The 89m Here comes the Sun in London

Here comes the Sun, Amels’ biggest build to date, recently stopped in London as she embarked on a global itinerary following an extensive refit at the Damen Yachting shipyard in Vlissingen City in the Netherlands. The yacht’s 16-month refit included extending its overall length from 83m to 89m, increasing its volume from 2,827GT to 2,977GT and a full respray with colour change.

Featuring exterior design by Tim Heywood and an interior by Winch Design, the superyacht was originally delivered in 2017 and returned to Damen Yachting last year under a new owner, who appointed Azure Yacht Design – the yard’s original partner for the naval architecture – to re-pen the iconic Amels build.

The 16-month refit included an extension from 83m to 89m

Three decks were extended aft: the sun deck to include a helicopter landing area, the bridge deck to allow for two VIP suites with exterior balconies, and the main deck to provide a larger beach club, spa facilities and a 7m swimming pool. Further modifications included alterations to several outdoor and interior areas, including the layout of the owner’s zone and tender garage.

Sander Peeters, Damen Yachting Project Manager, said: “The refit of Here comes the Sun was a very large scale and complex project. We are all very proud to have delivered on time and to such a high quality. Seeing her leave the yard was a very emotional moment and we look forward to following her next chapter and adventures with her owner.”

“Packing so much space and volume into a yacht under 30m while maintaining the sleek exterior styling we are accustomed to from Custom Line is astonishing,” Blackmore said. “In addition, the class-leading levels of stability and refinement made this yacht stand out from the competition. I do not see another yacht in this size segment that can truly compete.”

Exterior features include an aft bimini over the two steering wheels and a modular area in-between that can be converted into an island sunbathing area.

The cockpit can be shaded by a bimini and features sofas either side of a foldable table, there’s a small step up to each side deck, while aft is a large drop-down swim platform that allows access to a barbecue and the central garage.

The wide foredeck offers lounging space

The coach roof has been designed to leave room for a clear, wide foredeck, while a bulwark is directly integrated in the boat’s hull. “Developed to provide simple instinctive sailing, exciting and efficient, this new model combines luxury and simplicity,” Dufour stated.

Romain Motteau, Deputy CEO of parent company Fountaine Pajot, said: “While we have kept everything that made up the quality of the Dufour 63, we have focused even more on performance and robustness on the new Dufour 61. This is the company’s new flagship, marking the increasingly important presence that Dufour has taken in the world of top-of-the-range yachting.

“This new ambassador for Dufour expertise belongs to the class of superyachts. With a very pleasing hull for sailing on the open ocean, two different drafts, the absolute comfort of the cockpit and interior layout, the extreme width of the saloon and a forward galley that is very functional when cruising, this new flagship will create a sensation.”

The interior features an open saloon with an L-shaped sofa and flexible table to port and a C-shaped sofa to starboard. The owner’s suite is forward and has an en-suite bathroom in the bow, while the VIP double is aft to starboard.

There are multiple options for the area between the saloon and owner’s suite, such as a full-beam galley or a C-shaped galley to port and a bunk cabin to starboard. Both forward-galley options feature a twin cabin aft to port.

A third layout features an aft galley to port leading to a captain’s cabin with en-suite, while forward of the saloon is a twin-bunk cabin to port and a bathroom to starboard. Dufour offers three décor options: Millenium, Europe or Boston.

“One sees the galley integrated into the saloon for young families. The other is for an owner or for a couple accompanied by a skipper and a hostess, so includes a space dedicated to the crew, a fairly discreet galley and a huge living space dedicated to the captain, whether accompanied or not.”

Princess V50 “impeccable” in first sea trials

SHARE

Princess has announced feedback from sea trials of the V50, one of the British builder’s two world premieres at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2022.

The all-new Princess V50 replaces the outgoing model of the same name

Princess Yachts has announced the launch of the all-new Princess V50 and V50-Open models. The first V50 recently completed her initial sea trial in the manufacturer’s home of Plymouth, where the builder described its “impeccable performance, with sure-footed handling and a smooth ride”.

Featuring a deep-V hull, the new V50 replaces the popular model of the same name in the company’s V Class, which also includes the V40, V55, V60, V65 and V78. Designed by the Princess Design Studio with naval architects Olesinski and Italian design house Pininfarina, the V50 has been created using all-new hull, deck and canopy moulds to redefine one of the range’s core models.

The V50 is available with twin Volvo Penta IPS600 or IPS650 engines that can deliver speeds of over 30 knots and a longer cruising range than the outgoing model due to increased fuel capacity. New features include an extended canopy to provide more usable outdoor space.

The new V50 Deck Saloon will debut at Boot Düsseldorf (January 22-30, 2022), where it will be among the builder’s two world premieres with the X80.

Benetti unveils first B.Now 50M

Benetti unveils first B.Now 50M

The Italian superyacht builder has revealed details of the first B.Now 50M, part of a new steel series that also includes 58m, 66m and 72m models.

Benetti has revealed details of Iryna, the first B.Now 50M from the Italian builder’s new range of steel superyachts. British studio RWD has designed the 499GT superyacht along with 58m, 66m and 72m models, which all have a reduced construction time due to advanced construction technology and sharing a sinuous hull whose profile marries the interior and exterior decks with elongated windows.

All four models can be built with the Oasis Deck®, which builds on the success of the Oasis 40M by offering drop-down wings, a built-in pool in the beach area, a 270-degree field of view astern and from the saloon, plus a mix of sunlight and shade that enables guests to enjoy the deck at all times of day.

Built for a repeat Azimut-Benetti owner, the 164ft Iryna offers access to the water with a 390sqft beach club and an infinity pool, as well as a steam room. Nearly half the liveable surface area is outdoors.

The interiors are the result of collaboration between Benetti’s Interior Style Department and Visionnaire, the studio chosen by the owner. The claddings and ceiling panels are made with the finest woods, such as silk-coloured satin-finish frisé maple contrasting with oak. An ivory-coloured leather was chosen for the ceiling, while palladium, a precious metal in the platinum group, is used in manually applied, leaf-shaped satin-finish details.

Key features include the gym on the upper deck, the roomy relaxation and sunbathing spaces, and the alfresco dining area on the main deck, which also has an indoor saloon with a lounge and dining zone, as well as the owners’ suite with private balcony in the bow.

The hull was designed by P.L.A.N.A Design in collaboration with Azimut-Benetti, the top speed is 15 knots and the range is 4,500nm at 12 knots. The external garage forward of the main deck can house a 6.25m tender, a jet ski, a rescue craft and four Seabobs.
