Fountaine Pajot reveals Asia demand for Isla 40

The French builder has announced four recent sales of its entry-level Isla 40 sailing catamaran to Asia, “answering an increasing demand”.

Kevin Corfa, Head of Fountaine Pajot Asia, has announced four recent sales across Hong Kong and Japan of the Isla 40, the brand’s new entry-level sailing catamaran that launched in late 2020.

“It looks that the Isla 40 is answering an increasing demand. It’s the right product at the right time and Fountaine Pajot dealers now have the opportunity to showcase this great model to their prospects,” Corfa said.

The Isla 40 has demonstrated its appeal and we’re talking to numerous owners in Asia about the model. Along with the four recent sales, we hope for at two or three more to be confirmed before Chinese New Year.”

One Isla 40 for Hong Kong was recently delivered to Dream Marine, a new charter company, whose recent guests on Bambina included an owner awaiting the delivery of an Astrea 42 in 2022.

“Allowing owners waiting for their boats to get familiar on board other Fountaine Pajot boats is a useful service and can be a business model in Asia,” Corfa said.

“To purchase a catamaran today, whatever the brand, you need a fair amount of patience. Such a service is welcome and can be developed further.”

Another Isla 40 will soon be delivered to China Pacific Marine, the city’s official dealer for Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans, who will then arrange a handover to the client.

“China Pacific Marine has a successful track record arranging commissioning and service for boats arriving in Hong Kong,” Corfa said.

“We realise how important commissioning and after-sales service is, even if Fountaine Pajot offers the option to get the boat pretty much fully ready in La Rochelle. Fountaine Pajot is fully covered in Hong Kong with China Pacific Marine for sailing models and Asia Yachting for the motor range.”

One Isla 40 owner in Asia has already planned a long cruise around the region starting in spring 2022 that will make the most of the Fountaine Pajot network of dealers, which includes Yacht Sourcing in Indonesia.

“We now have a professional, reliable network all over Asia to make sure every boat is well taken care of,” Corfa said.

The Frenchman has been taken aback by the appeal of the Isla 40 as the demand for the brand is typically focused on larger models, with Fountaine Pajot building seven sailing models up to the flagship Alegria 67.

I was surprised a smaller cat would be so appealing to local markets. Obviously once you see the interior, you understand that this Isla 40 has brought available space to another level and I guess that makes the difference. A 40ft catamaran is no longer seen as a small boat in Hong Kong,” Corfa said.

“Although catamarans have become more expensive recently due to supply chain issues, what you get for your money now is absolutely astonishing. The price per sqft makes them really appealing as owners put living space top of the list when they compare boats. Combined with a refined, spacious interior, you get a boat that’s enjoyable for sailing and while mooring with guests or family.”

SKAYR Yachts has announced that its SKR40 Renanda will debut at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2023 after signing a build contract for the luxury sports cruiser with Light Ray Yachts, which currently manufactures and refits 30m-60m superyachts in Antalya Free Zone.

The 40-footer features an aluminium hull with a plumb bow, a spacious master cabin forward and the option of twin Volvo Penta D6-440 stem drives or twin Mercury V8 outboards for an anticipated top speed of 40 knots.

The contemporary design is the work of Raul Renanda, Design Director of SKAYR Yachts and an architect, designer, artist and sculptor whose work includes the sailboat-influenced Sjuman+Renanda concert grand piano designed with composer Aksan Sjuman.

Renanda co-founded SKAYR Yachts with Firman Santoso and naval architect Nino Krisnan, with the company and yacht names representing the initials of their surnames.

Ilker Yitik of Light Ray Yachts added: “We are delighted to be taking part in this journey with SKAYR Yachts. We are ready to develop a long-lasting relationship and collaborate on more projects to build premium-quality luxury yachts.”

SKAYR Yachts is developing a range of aluminium-hulled sports cruisers including the SKR50, which is powered by triple V12 Mercury 600s and is expected to top 60 knots. However, the SKR40 is the first model in production and has already generated strong interest according to Dennis de Roos, SKAYR’S Interim Commercial Director.

“SKAYR Yachts offers a new and contemporary design that radiates premium quality and a fit and finish expected of a true superyacht,” De Roos said. “The sheer amount of positive interest in the SKR40 Renanda has been astounding. We already have a strong list of potential customers who can’t wait to see the first in the water.”

The first SX112 in Asia, the first SX88 in Hong Kong and an SL 96A were delivered to Hong Kong in December, while an SX76 – a model with several units in Hong Kong – has been sold into Sanya, crowning another impressive year for Sanlorenzo in Asia.

The SX88 was the first model of Sanlorenzo’s pioneering crossover series, the SX112 is the new flagship of the range, while the SL96A is among asymmetric models in the builder’s planing series. The three units join a fast-growing fleet of Sanlorenzo yachts in Hong Kong, the home of Simpson Marine, which has represented the Italian builder in the region as Sanlorenzo Asia since 2015.

Nick Stratton, Sanlorenzo Asia Sales Manager, said: “We are delighted to see the ongoing significant growth of the demand for and trust in Sanlorenzo in Asia, with the support of our dedicated professional team who continue to deliver an excellent customer experience and to share their passion for all aspects of yachting.”

Meanwhile, the sale of the SX76 into Sanya is significant as it follows Hainan’s status as a Free Trade Port (FTP), announced in 2020. The island province’s FTP status benefits yacht owners as there’s no tax while a boat is operating as a charter vessel in China.

Angel Zhou, Simpson Marine’s China General Manager, said: “Hainan is set to be one of the most open and internationalised zones in the region. It is trade and investment‑friendly, boasts a robust legal regime, maintains a comprehensive financial services sector, and demonstrates safe and efficient oversight. It’s a very appealing overall package for yachting.”

A Sanlorenzo SX76 (pictured in Hong Kong) has been sold to Sanya

Yachting is among sectors poised to benefit from FTP policies and Simpson Marine has officially registered its operations within the Port business zone, allowing the company to import yachts into Hainan and benefit from the zero-tax policy. In early 2021, Simpson Marine was the first dealer to sell a yacht – a Lagoon 46 – into the Hainan FTP and more have followed.

Zhou added: “The procedures are still quite complex and due for simplification in future, but with our past successful cases of various yachts sales, we’re confident we can help more owners enjoy their yachts in Sanya. This is a significantly positive step for the growth of yachting within the region.”

In other Sanlorenzo activity in Asia, Sanlorenzo Asia recently sold a pre-owned SD126 lying in Singapore into North Asia, where the 38m model will be delivered in early 2022. The SD126 is the flagship of Sanlorenzo’s semi-displacement range.

CL Yachts has staged the technical launch of its CLX96, the brand’s flagship and first ‘Sea Activity Vessel’ (SAV).

CL Yachts enjoyed fine weather as the builder splashed its flagship CLX96, a model billed as a ‘Sea Activity Vessel’ (SAV). Milan-based Jozeph Forakis is responsible for the concept and exterior and interior design of the RINA-certified CLX96, while naval architecture and structural engineering is by Americans Earl Alfaro and Albert Horsmon respectively.

CL Yachts has staged the technical launch of its CLX 96, the brand’s flagship and first ‘Sea Activity Vessel’ (SAV).

The shipyard expects the 29.5m motor yacht to have a cruising speed of 22 knots and a top speed of 27 knots (at half load) with her twin Caterpillar C32 engines. The builder is now focusing on refinements and final adjustments before conducting sea trials.

CL Yachts has staged the technical launch of its CLX 96, the brand’s flagship and first ‘Sea Activity Vessel’ (SAV).

The yacht’s powerful performance is matched by her ‘workboat chic’ aesthetic. A plumb bow and a two-level deckhouse featuring reverse-sheer windshields are among many distinct exterior traits by Forakis, who only started designing boats with CL Yachts, having spent most of his career in industrial design.

CL Yachts has staged the technical launch of its CLX 96, the brand’s flagship and first ‘Sea Activity Vessel’ (SAV).

The angle of the windshields offers several advantages. In rough seas, water washes away from a reverse sheer smoothly and efficiently, ensuring good sight-lines when skippers need them the most. In addition, the angle reduces a ‘greenhouse effect’ in the interior, keeping it cool for passengers, and allows for more interior space.

Forakis, who drew inspiration from the New York City loft in which he was born, said: “The yacht’s distinctive profile is born from observations of living habits at sea and reconsidering the preconceptions of space, comfort and conviviality. Of course, comfort is a priority on a luxury yacht, but I also want those onboard to always be aware that they are on a ‘vessel’ built to transport them through space and time.”

Expat Marine, one of Asia’s leading yacht insurance brokers, has been acquired by the Howden Group, which operates in 45 countries and employs over 9,000 people. Headquartered in London, Howden’s marine division has over 160 staff in offices across Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, as well as access to a network of international partners.

Expat Marine’s Colin Dawson, a yacht insurance broker based in Hong Kong since 1994 with 25 years of specialist experience in the Asia-Pacific market, said the acquisition would benefit both the yacht industry and owners by combining both companies’ knowledge, experience and relationships.

“I have partnered with Expat Marine since 2009 and through this time our book of business has grown to over 250 yacht clients through 20 countries. While the hardening insurance market has presented its challenges, our portfolio continues to grow and we continue to look after all manner of yachts – large and small, cruising locally and worldwide,” said Dawson, a creator and the founding Chairman of APSA (Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association).

Colin Dawson is one of Asia’s most experienced yacht insurance brokers

“The successful partnership I have enjoyed with Expat Marine will continue with Howden. It allows us to benefit from Howden’s reach in the market, have greater access to global insurers and join a network of Howden offices. We will be working with Howden’s office in Hong Kong as well as regional offices, so will be able to offer greater levels of service throughout the Asia Pacific.”

Howden’s other recent acquisitions include UK and Antibes-based Sturge Taylor & Associates (STA Group), an independent superyacht insurance broker, along with sister STA Group company Fastnet Marine Insurance Services (Southampton). Another recent acquisition is Aston Lark, which encompasses London-based CRS Yachts, another specialist superyacht insurance broker.

Julian Franzman, Howden Specialty’s Head of Marine for Asia-Pacific, said: “The Expat Marine acquisition will strengthen the overall offering for our marine clients and reiterates Howden’s ongoing strategy of empowering local teams to partner with firms with a shared culture to enhance our client offering across the globe.”

Dawson added: “With Howden’s recent acquisitions in Europe, the acquisition of Expat Marine will only serve to strengthen our relationships with insurers, thereby our offering to clients. Working with Howden’s established teams in Europe allows for an easier navigation of what is a very difficult insurance market for yachts, increasing the availability of good-quality cover where many are pulling back.

“The acquisition also enables teams at Howden to access my 25 years of specialist yacht insurance experience in Asia and to assist growth in areas of the Asia-Pacific.

“I’m excited about the opportunity this change brings as I hope it allows us to create better, more stable programmes for clients in what is currently a very difficult insurance market. With a broader reach, I’m confident this change will allow us to present a more complete package to yacht owners and the surrounding yacht industry, allowing us to offer better value to them.”

Howden was founded in London in 1994 and operates across a range of insurance lines, with employees making up the largest shareholding group. Howden Group places US$11 billion premium a year into international insurance markets on behalf of clients that now include some of the world’s largest companies, governments and financial institutions.

Super Yacht Logistics (SYL) has announced changes to the rules regarding superyachts visiting and cruising in Japan. Kenta Inaba, President of SYL Japan and an experienced sailor, explained that changes were needed as the previous rules for superyachts in the country were aligned with commercial ship regulations.

“SYL Japan has worked hard since 2015 with various government departments and the Parliamentary Association for Luxury Travel to educate them about the superyacht industry, the economic benefits of superyachts visiting Japan, and how the previous rules were detrimental to the superyacht industry in Japan,” he said.

Inaba revealed that the rules have been overhauled for foreign-registered superyachts, with no time limit on a superyacht staying and cruising in Japan.

After completing initial clearances, superyachts will immediately apply for and receive a Naikosen, a type of cruising permit that allows it to essentially operate as a domestic Japanese vessel, with no clearances needed to cruise domestically. Previously, superyachts had to complete full customs, immigration and other clearance declarations for each movement while in Japanese waters.

Superyacht crew will be issued with a Multiple Landing Permit as needed and for as long as the yacht is in Japan, with the ‘crew pass’ only expiring when the crewmember leaves Japan either by flight or on the superyacht. Previously, under commercial ship rules, the crew pass was for 14 days.

In addition, superyacht crews of an eligible nationality can still receive a 90-day tourist visa waiver, which provides more options to travel in Japan while not on the superyacht.

Visiting superyachts will have to engage the services of a recognised agent that has government permissions necessary to apply for the yacht’s entry to Japan.

Along with updating superyacht rules, Japan’s government has put in place simple access to UHNW people through changes to rules for private jets and other domestic luxury travel, to encourage acceleration of a post-pandemic recovery.

“There are currently government restrictions on tourism due to the pandemic, but once these are lifted, the new rules will accelerate the ease for UHNW visitors to Japan,” Inaba said. “We already know of a number of superyachts planning to head to Japan in 2022.”

The interior layout starts with a large galley aft, while the saloon features a C-shaped sofa and a flexible table to port, facing more seating and an entertainment centre to starboard, aft of the helm station.

Geraldine Hardy: Taking care of yourself

Geraldine Hardy: Taking care of yourself

Indonesia-born Geraldine Hardy has lived and worked in Asia, America, Europe, Africa and Oceania, but repeated burnout in a succession of wide-ranging jobs led her to prioritise self-care, recently creating a programme for yacht crew and seafarers, as she reveals in a Column for Yacht Style Issue 62.

Welcome to my world where business practices find alignment with self-care and wellbeing. I’ve had many different lives with setbacks, adventures and nourishing experiences. I am a multifaceted being with over two decades of a multi-hyphenated career in marketing, sales and business development in various industries including yachting, and wellbeing with yoga therapy, meditation and quantum healing.

Born in Indonesia to a Chinese father and German mother, I was raised there, in the US and in Germany. I have always been connected to my Asian roots and embraced my spirituality growing up both with Eastern traditions and Western rationale.

From a young age I was very aware of energies around us and being able to feel them. It frightened me and I had to push these feelings away from me as a highly sensitive empath. After all, there was no space for emotions and tears as a professional dancer in a Russian ballet academy while finishing secondary education in Germany and focusing on business studies.

I experienced both worlds, Western and Eastern, which many times made me feel alienated from both and lack a sense of belonging, especially when I was younger. Only now can I truly say I am a citizen of planet earth and I am me, Geraldine.

After my studies, I left Germany to get married and live in France as a trained editor and events manager for an extreme sports publishing company. During these years I endured multiple spinal injuries as consequences of my former ballet training and various snowboard accidents.

WORKING & STUDYING

At this time, my love for yoga, meditation and philosophy continued to grow. With my new-found passion for board sports, I started working for Billabong Europe in sales and marketing.

However, I quickly understood that to grow in my career, I had to continue studying. I left my husband and the fun life I knew to complete my business studies course at the University of Brighton in the UK while working three jobs – as a sushi chef, analyst at American Express and shop assistant.

After university, I worked in Portugal, Tanzania and Cameroon for communications agencies conducting socio-economic reports to attract foreign direct investments. After a while, it became clear to me that my idealistic aim of wanting to go to developing countries to change the world did not really match the job description.

Instead, we were trained to sell overpriced ads in the form of advertorials to politicians and companies to make money for these agencies, so I withdrew from a project in Cameroon and went back to London.

I then worked as a global marketing manager in a private jet and cargo chartering company. I launched the entire marketing department for the air charter service and realised that if I kept up the pace of travelling constantly and working overtime, I would burn out very soon. There were moments I would wake up in the middle of the night not knowing whether I was in a hotel in New York or Dubai. It made me feel alienated and again so ungrounded, without a real home.

WARM WELCOME

I remember a key moment when I stepped out of a plane in Dubai and smelled the hot, sweet air. I felt this place would be life changing for me and I knew I would move there. Six months after I landed a job with IIR Middle East, now known as Informa Yacht Group, I started the entire branding and marketing for the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show.

This is where my journey in the yachting industry began. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship of yachts and still recall when I first saw Maltese Falcon, the 289ft sailing yacht built by Perini Navi. She was just stunning and beautiful. This year, I finally fulfilled my ambition to visit her onboard (note: that’s not Maltese Falcon below).

I quickly learned the industry was small, so it was essential to get to know people, nurture relationships, observe and understand how yachting works. Not being a sailor nor growing up with boats, it was challenging for me, but I listened and observed with humility. Visiting the yacht shows was fun but also took a toll on my work-life balance and wellbeing.

After some time, I decided to change industry and learn more about real estate in Dubai, which was the absolute ‘Wild West’ in terms of business practices in this sector, with few ethics, scant integrity and little transparency, although it was a great playground to learn how not to do things.

With these experiences under my belt, I opened a marketing agency and catered to clients such as Stars ‘N’ Bars Monte Carlo, Piaggio Italy ME and Emirates Mall.

RETURN TO YACHTING

After my time in Dubai, I met my second husband and followed him to Australia where I worked as a communications manager for British Gas Group on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline.

We then decided to move to Singapore where I fortunately returned to yachting and worked as the Sales Director of the Singapore Yacht Show. How I loved this job. Day and night I worked hard to fill up the marina and stand spaces with local and international clients, calling and sending mails in the long hours of the night, and travelling to shows.

However, my private life and marriage suffered from it to such an extent that my stress led to a miscarriage. Even though this was a challenging time, I never look back with regrets as I know that in life if something is meant to be, it is meant to be. I always had this trust and faith in life and the universe.

I still diligently practised yoga daily. I can now say with certainty that if I didn’t have this practice, I would have burned out way faster. Eventually, I did burn out after my second divorce and a short stint with the Dubai International Boat Show and went back to France.

TEACHING YOGA

The burnout was inevitable because of my past lifestyle and pace of life. I just took my body, mind and energy for granted. I knew I needed to change. So, I signed up for yoga teacher training with American teachers, combining the system and philosophy of yoga with studies in Western science.

For the past seven years, it has been a tough yet rewarding journey to go through transformation, heal past traumas and be able to continue to show up for myself every day without any specific expectations. I needed a break from business, while still being connected to the yachting industry and working freelance for The World of Yachts & Boats magazine.

About four years ago, I actively entered the world of business again. Last year I lost my job during Covid after again reaching the edge of burnout, but was able to reverse it as I started to boost my self-care regime to nourish my physical, emotional, mental, energetic and spiritual wellbeing.

The confinement gave me the opportunity to become still and just ‘be’ with a daily meditation and yoga practice, nature walks, healthy nutrition, and enough alone time to contemplate and heal my trauma.

PROMOTING SELF-CARE

At that stage, I was already a trained Alchemy Healer and knew how to enter my Theta brain wave, my subconscious mind, and neutralise trauma within. I started to share more posts on social media about self-care practices, how to preserve our energy, deal with lower vibrational emotions such as fear during Covid, and use our intuition. I just simply shared what I practise every day to stay balanced and try to keep a state of homeostasis.

For the past year, I’ve studied more about the quantum field, neuroscience, trauma-informed yoga therapy and created simple selfcare programmes with routines for individuals, corporates and leaders, all while understanding no one can do the work for them.

Geraldine Hardy, taking care of yourself, self care, programme, Yacht Style, Issue 63, yoga, meditation, Singapore Yacht Show, Abu Dhabi International Boat Show, Germany, Indonesia, Informa Yacht Group, Alchemy Healer, Theta brain wave, well-being optimise, productivity, creativity, integrity, crew, seafarer

They’re not quick-fix programmes, but I do believe that small changes can create so much relief and wellbeing. It requires selflove, discipline and daily practice to master our minds, and to care for our bodies as well as our energetic, emotional and spiritual being.

Naturally, my lessons about successes and hardships are very much connected to my wellbeing and ongoing bid to keep a balanced lifestyle.

Since I am still connected to the yachting industry, I’ve also created a programme for seafarers and yacht crew. Crew on yachts are often challenged to find a work-life balance, suffering from fatigue, mental and physical exhaustion, alienation and loneliness. Self-care allows seafarers to understand and become cognitive of the impact of such imbalances.

Believing a combination of business skills and well-being optimise productivity, creativity and integrity, my aim is to support individuals to reach their personal and professional goals by empowering them to make the self-care programme their own.

Asiamarine CEO Eric Noyel has taken delivery of a luxuriously customised Bali 4.8 (Review, Issue 59 – click to read) and put the 15m sailing catamaran into charter through the yacht services company he founded in Hong Kong in 2013.

Happy Fifty, a three-cabin Bali 4.8, can have up to 15 guests for an eight-hour day charter at HK$38,000 (about US$4,900) and up to six guests overnight for a 24-hour charter at HK$68,000 (about US$8,700).

Prices cover two crew and water toys including an aluminium-hulled semi-rigid tender, underwater scooter, mini diving bottles with compressor, eFoil electric surfboard, paddleboards, two-seater kayak, snorkelling masks, inflatables, rackets, balls, frisbees and professional fishing gear.

Noyel didn’t have charter in mind when he bought the yacht, his fifth, but instead wanted to buy the largest amount of living space that he could own on the water and operate with Hong Kong’s Grade Two licence, which covers yachts up to 50ft.

“The yacht has 1,100sqft of living space and anyone with a Grade Two licence can own and operate the yacht by themselves, although of course it’s nice to also have crew if you want,” said Noyel, whose company started representing Bali in 2020.

“This is the largest amount of real estate you can own on the water and operate with a Grade Two licence in Hong Kong.”

The Bali 4.8 is the French builder’s second-largest model, after the 5.4, and has the iconic tilting ‘Bali door’ that lifts into the ceiling to fully connect the aft cockpit with the main-deck interior.

It also has a forward door from the saloon to the solid foredeck, which has a sunken cockpit and a wide table with two sofas, as well as five forward sunpads.

The yacht’s outdoor areas also include a large flybridge, which also has a dining table, large L-shaped sofa and an aft sunbathing area. Noyel also ordered a hard top, a first for a 4.8 flybridge and a welcome addition to provide shade while enjoying the flybridge.
