Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific delivered eight luxury yachts to its clients over a busy European summer season for the Italian shipyard and its APAC representative. The deliveries took place across Sanlorenzo’s shipyards in La Spezia, Ameglia, and Viareggio, with many of the fleet enjoying cruising in Europe before heading to Asia.

The list of yachts handed over included two units of the SX88, the pioneer of Sanlorenzo’s crossover series, while an SX100 was also among the eight deliveries.

The other five deliveries were all different models and included Asia’s first SD90, part of a semi-displacement series that includes the tri-deck SD118, another of Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific’s summer deliveries.

Sanlorenzo’s expansive planing range was represented by the handover of an SL106A, the second-biggest model in a line modernised by a pioneering asymmetric layout. Other deliveries included an SP110 coupe, which is the first model from the shipyard’s new Smart Performance range and boasts a top speed of over 40 knots.

The biggest yacht handed over was an Alloy, the 44.5m aluminium superyacht that’s part of Sanlorenzo’s Superyacht range.

Nick Stratton, Vice President Sales at Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific, said: “We are delighted to have successfully delivered these magnificent yachts to our clients in time to enjoy the European summer in the Mediterranean, following which they will relocate to various locations in Asia. Each yacht represents the pinnacle of luxury and innovation, and we are proud to see them set sail.”

Stratton also commented on the new markets covered by Simpson Marine as part of Sanlorenzo’s purchase of the dealership earlier this year, leading to the dealership’s coverage across Asia-Pacific.

“We see immense potential in all our APAC markets,” Stratton said. “Our tailored approach to yacht design and craftsmanship resonates with clients seeking bespoke solutions and our full range of yachts has something to offer all needs. With our presence now also covering Vietnam and Australia, we are well-positioned to meet their needs and continue our growth in these dynamic markets.”

Since 2015, when Simpson Marine began representing the brand, over 70 Sanlorenzo yachts have been commissioned in Asia-Pacific. Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific is working on further deliveries and the continued growth of its presence in the regional market, with exclusive activations planned for Australia, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific notes that Sanlorenzo brands brokerage interest is also strong in the region, with a 2019 Sanlorenzo SX88 very recently sold in Singapore, and adds that it currently has several major brokerage deals pending in and out of Asia.

Sunreef Yachts and Brabus Marine are partnering to offer customised, upgraded versions of the Polish builder’s catamarans. Sunreef, which has two production facilities in northern Poland and a new site in the UAE, is initially teaming up with Brabus to offer a unique line of luxury motor catamarans based on the Ultima 55, set for release in 2025.

The first in a line of Ultima powercats, the Ultima 55 is being produced at Sunreef’s new facility in Ras Al Khaimah, an hour from Dubai, where Sunreef has its Middle East office.

Francis Lapp, Sunreef’s founder and President, and Constantin Buschmann, owner and CEO of Brabus, announced the companies’ partnership at the Monaco Yacht Club during this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

The glamorous evening attracted VIP guests from all over the world and included Sunreef Ambassadors Rafael Nadal, Fernando Alonso and Mike Horn, who earlier in the week was announced as one of three Bowsprit winners at The Honours.

Lapp, who spends much of his time in the UAE, said: “Partnering with Brabus allows us to explore a new, entirely unique level of bespoke elegance for our catamarans. By combining our experience in designing luxurious, custom-built multihulls with Brabus’ unmistakable signature style, we are creating products that will redefine luxury on the water.”

Based in Germany and founded in 1997, Brabus made its name as an aftermarket tuning company, offering highly bespoke versions of luxury cars produced by the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Porsche. Brabus moved into the yacht sector when it partnered with Axopar to offer upgraded versions of the Finnish builder’s popular adventure boats, with the Sunreef partnership now building on the tuning company’s experience in the marine sector.

Buschmann said: “As we continue the Brabus Marine journey with our award-winning Shadow range in partnership with Axopar, we’re excited to be expanding our portfolio into the world of high-end luxury catamarans together with Sunreef Yachts. To us, it’s all about setting new standards, by challenging our know-how and design DNA with a brand-new range of luxury products defined by what both brands do best.”

As well as the upcoming versions of the Ultima 55, Sunreef and Brabus stated they “are committed to expanding this collaboration, with further models to be announced in the near future”.

The 101 is the flagship of the Nomad range

Comfortable cruising around the Asia-Pacific requires much of a luxury yacht. A high degree of self-sufficiency, both in terms of fuel and catering is necessary, while the region’s tropical environments require shade and protection.

Thankfully, the tri-deck Nomad 101 provides it, along with a clutch of expedition-style essentials, such as large storage for watersports gear while providing ample comfort for up to 10 guests.

With a superyacht-level owner’s suite added in for good measure, the Nomad 101 is a desirable vessel. The hull I’m touring, Bluestone, is in charter – for now. When I spoke with the owners, they told me that although they were very happy with the build and the vessel’s operation, they had listed the Sydney-based yacht with Flagship International Brokers for AU$14.5 million (about US$9.8 million).

The Nomad 101 looks stunning in Sydney

CLASSIC DESIGN

British naval architect Andrew Wolstenholme’s penchant for a classic hull shape – flared bows and high bulwarks – combined with contemporary topsides, has shaped the Nomad range since its first launch, the Nomad 65, at the 2015 Dubai International Boat Show.

That distinctive aesthetic was evident in the later 95 model, and now in the 101. Wolstenholme has explained that his combined aims for the range are “comfort and safe handling at sea.”

Fine forward sections give the fibreglass hull a comfortable ride in head seas, and the modified round bilge form with stabiliser fins smooths offshore motion.

Foredecks on two levels offer secure privacy with panoramic views

“The addition of the spray chine defines the lifting surface and gives my hulls a performance close to that of a planing hull at higher speeds, without the hard ride,” said Wolstenholme.

The semi-displacement hull is capable of 21 knots but aims at the lower teens for cruising. Owners and guests enjoy ample privacy, with four levels, fore and aft cockpits, plus areas such as the Portuguese walk-around on the upper deck and a water-level beach club below.

HOME TO THE MAIN FOCUS

The main deck on the Nomad 101 combines relaxation with fun. The owner’s suite is forward, giving panoramic views from its elevated position while aft is the saloon and aft deck lounge.

The aft main deck is spacious with good practicalities – oversized cleating all round, and large capstans for stern-to berthing.

Behind this is easy access to the swim platform and a dinghy garage that doubles as a beach club with Gulf Craft-made teak furniture. The garage is large enough to hold a triple-seat jet ski along with the zippy Williams TurboJet 325 tender, and its door works as a sunshade when open.

Teak-clad stairs take me up to the main-deck cockpit, which features practical details such as large capstans for easy stern-to berthing.

Wide and tinted sliding doors lead into the 35sqm main saloon. Cream tones, including on cabinetry, combine with dark wood flooring to set a contemporary yet comfortable ambience. Interiors incorporate a range of sustainable materials called for in the creative brief.

The wide hydraulic platform and equally large dinghy garage create a genuine beach club on the 101

Cream lounge fabric Piñatex, a natural textile derived from pineapple-leaf fibre is used along with other natural fibres including hemp, linen and wool. ‘Serene’ interior trim, developed by the Dutch design firm Phantom Studio, layers delicate tones and textures to imbue surroundings with a sense of calm.

As I relax on the vast and sumptuous L-shaped couch, tall vertical bulkhead windows reveal clear views across the marina. Forward of here is the dining area with an inlaid stone-topped table that seats 10. Here, a wood-veneer ‘feature wall’ between the saloon and galley also works as a sound-dampening bulkhead when underway.

Another sliding door reveals the 8sqm main galley, where a sturdy mechanical pantograph door gives crew access to wide side decks.

Dutch firm Phantom Studio installed plenty of sustainable materials

Siemens appliances are used throughout, including a four-burner hob, oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The longitudinal galley has ample room for the chef and hostess to prepare food on the long quartz benchtops, with a deep sink inboard and panoramic sea views outboard.

Other utilities, such as the laundry and crew quarters are in the aft section of the lower deck, together with a spacious captain’s cabin, fully-equipped mess and ablutions. All are done well, and make me wish the same had been so back in the 1990s, during my time as a superyacht engineer.

Yacht, superyacht, Gulf Craft, Nomad 101, Australia

Protected nooks with tables and chairs across decks make taking in the sea air manageable in all but severe weather conditions

Adjoining this area is the engine-room door and inside there’s good access around the twin MTU V12 shaft drives (or the twin CAT C32 ACERT option) for servicing. Other main systems are the twin Caterpillar 45kVA generators and the watermaker.

Beyond the galley on the main deck is a 25sqm foredeck that sits ahead of the owner’s cabin, where a stateroom gives 270-degree views and a lounging balcony forward. Inside, there’s a large, double walkaround bed with desk and chaise longue, a sturdy door to the starboard deck, and ample hanging storage in two full-length wardrobes.

Vast windows throughout the Andrew Wolstenholme-designed hull create an airy ambience on this 100-footer, yet the interior is nicely shaded because of the near-vertical bulkheads

A composite stone made of recycled plastic bottles and quartz was chosen for the hard surfaces, while underfoot, the deep wool carpet helps keep the space quiet.

Curved cabinetry includes space for an elevated 55in TV and entertainment hub. Privacy is ensured via electric blinds all around. In the bathroom, marble cladding contrasts stylishly with the lightwood cabinetry and a large shower cubicle.

The airy owner’s suite on the main deck, decorated in calming tones, with several sustainable materials used

All four guest cabins are in the lower deck, along with the crew cabins, providing privacy to the owner above. All cabins have en-suites. The VIP forepeak cabin would be my pick, best enjoyed at a secure berth as it will feel motion when underway.

UPPER DECK

An internal staircase leads to the bridge deck with the 16sqm Sky Lounge behind it. This is also a perfect relaxation place with unhindered views, and part of 35sqm of exterior upper-deck space.

At the helm station, the layout is well done: 19in Garmin screens are divided between navigation and operations on one side, and engineering and chain counters on the other. There is an electrohydraulic steering wheel, Humphree stabiliser management, thruster levers, the control panel for the Interceptor tabs and a main power cut-off switch.

The helm has deck access to the Portuguese bridge; ideal for the skipper during tight berthing

An extensive CCTV system allows the skipper to monitor the engine room and other critical operational spaces. The twin MTU V12-2000s have dedicated data screens, and there’s a captain’s office up here as well.

Beyond, stairs lead up to the flybridge, where there’s another helm forward to starboard with two Garmin 17in screens, throttles and thrusters. Behind is the aptly named Sky Lounge with study, teak flooring and moveable furniture should you feel like dancing.

The bottom line? The Nomad 101 is aptly named because it’s a yacht that offers it all.

Ian Harris, Phoenix Yacht Management: Navigating The UAE Yacht Market

SHARE

As premium yacht ownership’s rise in this region prompts a boom in ultra-luxury marine infrastructure, related services and plans to simplify regulations, Ian Harris, founder of Phoenix Yacht Management in Dubai, shares an informed overview of the current UAE scene.

Yacht market UAE Ian Harris Yacht market UAE Chakra for charter Yacht market UAE Lioness V Yacht market UAE FerrettiIan Harris is CEO and Founder of Dubai-based Phoenix Yacht Management

The yachting industry in the Middle East has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. An increasing number of yachts are based in the region, with 175 superyachts over 30m forecast to enter the region at least once by the end of 2024, according to a 2023 market report by Gulf Superyachts.

While 10 years ago, Middle Eastern clients preferred to charter yachts in the 40-80m

range, there is now a growing preference for building their own vessels and keeping them in the region. Government agencies are actively supporting this shift by rapidly developing ultra-luxury marine infrastructure across the Middle East.

This expansion has heightened the demand for top-tier yacht management companies that offer not only exceptional operational service, technical maintenance, and onboard care but also possess an in-depth understanding of the region’s unique market dynamics, regulatory environment, and cultural specialties.

The warm climate occasionally presents challenges and requires specific maintenance and operational strategies to ensure yachts remain in peak condition. This includes using advanced air-conditioning and seawater cooling systems, and adhering to maintenance schedules tailored to the local environment.

Management companies therefore proactively integrate these elements into their operations, ensuring yachts are not only compliant with local regulations but are adapted to the region’s unique demands.

The Middle Eastern luxury yacht market, driven by clients seeking exclusivity, demands a very high level of privacy and seeks a personalised service. Some clients might prefer culturally sensitive management that aligns with certain traditions, requiring crews to be trained in understanding particular customs and etiquette.

Where there is a strong preference for family-oriented activities, these experiences might need to cater to large, multi-generational groups.

Yacht management companies have adapted by ensuring that crew members are not only skilled in luxury service but also culturally aware, capable of delivering tailored experiences that meet the specific needs of clients of all cultures present in the region. This includes everything from dietary preferences, such as halal catering, to arranging private, culturally appropriate entertainment and activities.

Essentially not different from any other region, the legal and regulatory framework for yacht operations in the Middle East can, however, be intricate, with significant variations not only between countries but also among the different emirates within the UAE.

On that note, the UAE introduced a new maritime law, Federal Decree-Law No. 43 of

2023, which came into effect in March 2024. It replaced previous maritime legislation, addressing various issues and confusion that have arisen over the years. Article 18 allows charterers of foreign-registered vessels to apply for UAE registration and fly the UAE flag, provided the charter duration is at least six months and all registration requirements are met.

Article 19 permits owners of UAE-registered vessels to seek permission to fly a foreign flag when renting the vessel without equipment. This new law brings comprehensive reforms to vessel registration and precautionary arrest procedures, improving clarity, expanding eligibility, and aligning with international standards. These changes are expected to streamline maritime operations, and establish a more robust legal framework for maritime activities in the UAE.

Re-registration can be a strategic move, but it requires careful planning and a deep understanding of local laws. In the context of yacht charter operations in the Middle East, compliance with local laws is crucial for ensuring safe and legal operations.

Yacht management companies should have clear policies and training to ensure that all crew members and guests are aware of and adhere to these regulations, particularly when travelling across borders where rules may vary significantly. This approach helps maintain respect for local customs while also ensuring that all activities on board are lawful.

Oman, another emerging destination for yacht charters, presents its own regulatory challenges. Foreign yachts entering Omani waters must obtain a cruising permit, a process that requires detailed preparation and adherence to strict environmental regulations, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like the Musandam Peninsula.

Oman’s legal framework, influenced by Islamic law, also affects various aspects of yacht operations, from onboard conduct to the types of activities promoted in a charter itinerary.

The taxation landscape adds another layer of complexity. In the UAE, for example, a five per cent value-added tax (VAT) may apply to yacht charters, depending on the specifics of the service and location. This tax must be accurately calculated and reported to avoid penalties.

While Oman does not currently have a VAT system, other fees and charges apply to charter operations, requiring careful management. Yacht management companies play a vital role in ensuring all necessary permits and licenses are obtained, that yachts comply with both local and federal regulations, and that crews are trained to meet the cultural and legal expectations unique to each country or emirate.

By expertly navigating these challenges, they ensure that yacht charters in the Middle East offer not only a seamless and legally compliant experience but also one enriched with the region’s culture, fantastic cuisine, and unique adventures.

Benetti’s B.Yond 57M

At the Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, on the sidelines of the Monaco Yacht Show 2024, Benetti presented its new developments that encapsulate the essence of the shipyard, which it calls “The House of Yachting”.

CEO Marco Valle underscored how the targets achieved by the group in 2023-2024, with revenues of €1.3 billion and a backlog of €2.6 billion, have laid the groundwork for forecast growth of 15 per cent in the coming yachting season. This goal is backed by an investment plan worth €160 million to support the company’s strategic priorities for the three-year period 2025-2027.

Benetti’s B.Loft project brings a contemporary residential feel to a megayacht

The group has achieved this important milestone with the help of the excellent results reported by Benetti, which has an order backlog of 58 units totalling 30,900GT, according to Benetti sales director Daniela Petrozzi.

Sustainable lifestyle concept

The shipyard develops the brand’s innovation around the concept of sustainable lifestyle, with an approach that combines future-forward research with the implementation of the best and most-effective solutions currently available.

It has introduced state-of-the-art electrification systems that reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent, and says it offers the widest hybrid range on the market, with 90 per cent of models available in hybrid or diesel-electric versions.

There is also a sharp focus on reducing energy consumption. Power management designed to optimise the electrical loads on board, heat recovery systems and the use of direct expansion air-conditioning technology reduce service consumption on board by up to 40 per cent.

The group has reached an agreement with international carbon-neutral efficiency company ENI, and the resulting use of HVO biofuel for all shipyard operations has reduced CO2 emissions by 1,000 tonnes per year.  HVO, which is compatible with the entire Benetti range, can decrease well-to-wake emissions by up to 90 per cent when used as the on-board fuel.

In addition, the shipyard fits selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems as standard for yachts under 500GT, even though this is not required by law in this category. Benetti estimates this choice reduces NOx emissions by 2.5 tonnes per yacht per year, as well as allowing its yachts to be used in marine protected areas, according to Benetti General Manager Massimo Casoni.

Also during the Monaco Yacht Show, Benetti Head of Product, Sebastiano Vida and the designers involved presented the new B.Yond 40M and 57M, Motopanfilo 45M, and B.Loft projects.

B.Yond, the voyager line

Benetti renews the B.Yond line, becoming a very green family of yachts in the category, which is evolving thanks to the collaboration with Igor Lobanov for the exterior styling and Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture for the interior design, with two different concepts for the identities of the new 40M and 57M.

B.Yond line models share an ‘explorer feeling’ while retaining the classic elegance of Benetti yachts, where the white hull contrasts with a grey superstructure to project both strength and elegance. The range is designed for leisurely voyages of exploration in unspoilt areas, made possible by the advanced technology installed on board by Benetti and the hybrid-electric system, which reduce impact on the environment.

This beach club configuration features in one of three options for the B.Yond 57M

B.Yond 57M

Designed for a range of experiences on long cruises, the B.Yond 57M has three stern configurations: the Beach version with a generous outdoor area and pool, the Air version with a touch-and-go helipad and the possibility of transforming this space into a veranda, and the Water version designed to stow marine exploration equipment.

B.Yond 40M

This model extends across four decks, each designed for a specific function, with various possible configurations. The areas for socialising occupy about 150sqm and are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glazing that floods the interiors with light.

Aboard this 40m yacht, the main saloon has a palette of pale colours to select from, including a bleached white oak with a brushed finish that adds depth, character and durability.

With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the Motopanfilo 45M is a modern revisiting of the Navetta concept in collaboration with RWD for the exterior styling and Lazzarini & Pickering Architetti for the concept behind the interiors and exterior decks to create an experience of conviviality and contact with nature.

Abeking & Rasmussen, the renowned German shipyard, is celebrating an impressive 117 years in the maritime industry. The milestone is particularly noteworthy as many of the shipyard’s vessels continue to grace the world’s oceans – one, Jagare, launched in 1989 has made a welcome return home to the shipyard in time for the occasion.

Following trips to the Arctic and Antarctic, family-owned Jagare returns home for the winter

Founded in 1907 by mechanical engineer Georg Abeking and boatbuilder Henry Rasmussen, the Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) shipyard began by crafting sailing yachts in Lemwerder, Germany. Their reputation grew steadily and globally. Early, somewhat modest, beginnings building small sailboats and wooden minehunters, evolved into a global leader in yacht and shipbuilding.

Now with updated production hangars, a new dock, and workshops that process wood, steel and aluminium at the shipyard, A&R is well able to launch yachts of up to 125m. Today it also produces luxury motoryachts like the 118m Liva, state-of-the-art multipurpose vessels and government-commissioned minehunters.

One of its most remarkable creations, the 36.5m sailing yacht Jagare, was built at the original yard and returned to it for the anniversary. Built in 1981, the 221-gross-tonne vessel designed by the late Dutch naval architect Willem de Vries Lentsch Jr and was one of the largest private yachts of its time.

Originally commissioned by a family man, the all-aluminum sailing superyacht is now helmed by his daughter, who was just 12 when construction began. Jagare has since completed eight circumnavigations under the same family’s ownership and the vessel has explored both Arctic and Antarctic waters.

With a 26,116-litre fuel capacity and a top speed of 12 knots, Jagare exemplifies the yard’s commitment to enduring quality. A&R yachts are rarely sold publicly and more often, like Jagare, stay within families or quietly pass into the hands of trusted new owners to sail the world’s oceans and provide decades of joy and dedicated service.

Art Works Gallery continues its visionary mission to support the promising careers of exceptional young talents with an upcoming exhibition dubbed Perception. Perception aims to answer the question of how three young London-based contemporary visual artists articulate (or “perceive”) the visual representation of reality on the surface of their canvases. Running from 24 October to 24 November at One Holland Village, visitors will be allowed an insight into how each of the three artists — Araminta Blue, Callum Harvey and Max Boyla — offers a distinct response through their unique practice, challenging conventional notions of form, space and meaning.

With accolades to their name, each of these three artists have graduated from prestigious institutions and are now at the forefront of contemporary visual discourse. “I’ve been following the careers of each artist for some time now, so it is my pleasure to bring such exciting and talented artists to Singapore and South-East Asia, and introduce their respective practices to a new collector base here,” says Cassi Young, global fine art director at Art Works Group.

Here is an insight into the three featured artists of Art Works Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, Perception:

Araminta Blue

Araminta Blue – image courtesy of Loris Shala

Araminta Blue’s artwork is heavily inspired by escapism, which is translated into otherworldly abstract shapes. London-based British artist Araminta Blue holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Slade School of Art and a bachelor’s degree from the Ruskin School of Art. Her first museum show — Il Calore Sulla Pelle — is currently on display at MARV Gradara in Italy.

Araminta Blue’s “To Light” — oil on canvas, 150 by 110 cm, painted in 2024

Her immersive oil paintings take figuration to the extreme, involving abstract layers and textures that blur, dissolve, and re-emerge on the surface of the canvas. In this way, she invites viewers into her artistic act of creation as she reimagines the visual landscape of her canvas and how it can be used as an escape and protection from reality.

Callum Harvey

26-year-old British artist Callum Harvey uses soft colour palettes to depict architectural, spatial, and natural elements as he explores the transitional spaces where the natural and artificial intersect. His art employs layered, translucent paint to create dislocated perceptions of space that evoke surreal environments. Harvey’s debut solo exhibition was held at Pipeline in London in 2023, followed by exhibitions at Future Fair in New York and Pavilion Gallery in London.

Alongside a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art and a bachelor’s degree from Falmouth University, he has also received the Radcliffe Trust Craft Scholarship and the Arts Society Young Arts Bursary. Harvey’s work examines the tension between the natural and the artificial that arises from the interplay of a flat surface and representations of three-dimensional spaces.

Max Boyla

London-based artist Max Boyla explores the blurred lines between the real and the imagined, creating ambiguous worlds where recurring characters offer familiarity in surreal, timeless settings. A recent graduate from the Royal Academy Schools, he has most recently exhibited at Des Bain, Berntson Bhattacharjee, Sim Smith, Mammoth, APT Gallery, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Boyla’s recent pieces investigate the fictional landscapes of advertising and their unattainable promises. His works on satin possess an ambiguous quality that drifts between pure abstraction and natural landscapes, evoking a fluid interplay of sea, sky, and formlessness.

Perception will run from 24 October to 24 November 2024 at Art Works Gallery, One Holland Village, 7 Holland Village Way, Singapore.

Nuclear power is the new wave in yachting

Nuclear power is the new wave in yachting

SHARE

Nuclear power is emerging as a potential game-changer for yacht operations. A recent report by Lloyd’s Register, unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, suggests that the innovative technology could usher in a new era of sustainable, high-performance yachting.

The report, aptly entitled Fuel for Thought: Nuclear for Yachts by the 260-year-old London-based marine industry advisors, paints an exciting picture of how nuclear propulsion could revolutionise marine travel. With its ability to generate higher power outputs, nuclear energy promises extended range, increased speeds, and superior overall performance for yachts.

Engel-Jan de Boer, Global Yacht Segment Director at Lloyd’s Register, emphasised the transformative potential of this technology. “Nuclear energy offers the potential to be as transformational to shipping as the shift from wood to iron or from sail to steam,” he said. “Unlike alternative fuels that might serve as direct replacements for traditional oil-fired systems, nuclear power represents a fundamental shift that could redefine luxury yachting.”

The concept of nuclear-powered vessels is not entirely new. With over 70 years of successful deployment in naval applications, nuclear reactors at sea have a proven track record. This experience, coupled with ongoing advancements in technology, is paving the way for broader adoption in the yachting industry.

One of the most exciting developments in this field is the active pursuit of small modular reactors (SMRs) and micro-reactors by governments and private companies worldwide. These reactors are designed with safety, efficiency, and modularity in mind, making them particularly well-suited for maritime applications.

The benefits of nuclear propulsion for the yacht industry are compelling and many. Nuclear-powered yachts offer the capability for extended voyages, operating for prolonged periods without the need for refuelling, which makes long expeditions more feasible and opens up new possibilities for exploration.

These vessels also gain enhanced performance characteristics, as nuclear reactors generate substantial power, leading to higher speeds and improved overall yacht performance. Perhaps most notably in our current climate-conscious era, nuclear propulsion produces zero greenhouse gases during operation.

However, the path to widespread adoption of nuclear-powered yachts is not without its challenges, and the industry must address several critical issues before this technology can become a reality. Foremost, is the implementation of robust safety measures to ensure the secure operation of nuclear reactors in a maritime environment.

This goes hand-in-hand with the need to establish rigorous regulations governing the use of nuclear propulsion in private vessels, a process that will require collaboration between industry leaders, maritime authorities, and nuclear regulatory bodies.

The industry must also develop effective strategies for handling and disposing of spent nuclear fuel, addressing the entire lifecycle of these power sources. Finally, overcoming public concerns about nuclear safety will be a hurdle, requiring transparent communication, education, and demonstration of the technology’s safety and benefits to gain acceptance.

Despite these challenges, nuclear-powered yachts are an intriguing prospect for the yachting industry.

As research and development in nuclear science continue to advance, the yachting world may be on the cusp of a new era. The vision of sleek, powerful yachts cruising the world’s oceans, powered by the boundless energy of the atom, could soon become a reality.

The Swan 108 was required to offer elegance and strength with comfort and safety

The first Swan 108, dubbed Fancy by her French owners, was created with the aim to, “seamlessly blend the virtues of speed with elegance, strength, reliability, and, above all, to create a hull that ensures the comfort and safety for both the owner and guests while sailing in conditions likely to be encountered while cruising middle-distance passages,” said naval architect Germán Frers, who designed the hull of the Swan 108.

True to Nautor’s Swan’s racing pedigree, the Swan 108 delivers the exceptional performance one would expect from this renowned shipyard

Exterior design came from the Milan-based Micheletti + Partners and the interior was created in-house by Nautor Swan, with a team headed by designer Misa Poggi. The concept for the Swan 108 had just been announced when the owners of hull one connected with the Finnish builder.

The Swan 108 has a traditional steering circuit to replicate the ease of smaller boat sailing

Craving more space and comfort for their family of seven, the owners were looking to make a sizable step up from their previous yacht, a Beneteau Oceanis 62. The notion of taking on a nearly 20m leap in LOA between boats was made with the simultaneous idea of having a crew to help with the day-to-day running of the boat.

With the guidance of the owner’s representative and yacht project manager Ulysse Harin, the owners consulted with all the top builders of high-end cruiser/racer sailing yachts to find a builder that offered proven design while allowing the owners to make customisations that would best suit their needs.

Curved windows filter natural light into a main saloon

They were drawn to the Swan Maxi line, which blended sailing performance and comfort. Fancy’s owners are a large family, both in number, with five children in tow, and also in stature. “The owner and his son are both two metres tall – and his son is only 16 years old, so he’s going to get bigger,” said Harin.

Rich burgundy accents and furnishing with pops of colour are found throughout the interior

The in-house design team at Nautor Swan partnered with structural engineers to optimise deck stiffeners, allowing ceiling heights in all main living areas to offer more than 205cm of clearance. It’s customisations like these that will be appreciated by Fancy’s owners as well as her charter clientele, as the yacht is also on the charter market.

The Swan 108 boasts many design firsts for the overall Nautor Swan fleet. This includes a new aft design, which sees an entire portion of the aft deck lift up and lower down to sea level to create an 18m swim platform that can be set up as a beach club.

“This isn’t just the transom opening,” said Vanni Gaigani, head of product marketing for Swan and Maxi Swan yachts. “The whole mechanism was designed by us and fully built in Finland.”

The Swan 108 is also the first to feature a sleek new coachroof style designed by Micheletti + Partners. Also notable is the placement of the mast, which sits on top of the coachroof, rather than in front as might be seen on other yachts. Likewise, while many large luxury sailing yachts hide the mast away inside a box or tuck it behind a bulkhead in the interior, Fancy’s mast is on full display, as per her owner’s request.

The curved windows in the coach roof above help natural light filter down into the main saloon, which is bright in its material choices. The owner’s brief for the interior was simple: space, light and luminosity. Poggi and the team at Nautor Swan achieved this by mixing light and dark colours and a variety of textures to create a sense of spaciousness and interest.

“Light colours and materials are used on the verticals, contrasted by a grounding earthy colour of the lower furniture components and floor,” said Heini Gustafsson, senior project architect, styling, at Nautor Swan.

“Part of Swan DNA is to use real wood veneers, which was appreciated by the owners,” Gustafsson added.

The interior design team also created a selection of four interior motif examples, which, if chosen by future owners of the Swan 108 series, will save time and money over creating a more customised interior.

Options abound in the layout of Swan 108 as well. A standard configuration, which is seen on Fancy, has master cabin and VIP forward, while two twin-bed cabins are aft of the main saloon, adjacent to the crew quarters. A variety of cockpit configurations are on offer as well.

While racing wasn’t their ambition for Fancy, as experienced sailors and racers, the owners put a priority on performance.

High-performance under sail was paramount for the owner family of Fancy

Fortunately, both Nautor Swan and longtime collaborator Germán Frers are known for crafting high-performance sailing yachts. Frers utilised computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to optimise the hull design to provide a smooth ride even in heavier conditions.

“We wanted to replicate the feeling of steering a small boat even in this size,” Gaigani said. To meet this aim, the Swan 108 was outfitted with a traditional steering circuit that gives realistic feedback to whomever is at the helm, which in the case of Fancy will often be her owners.

Fancy’s sail plan also meets the goal for joyful sailing, with North Sails providing a total sail area of 1,448sqm, while Hall Spars provided the carbon spars and the rigging is ECsix by Future Fibres.

Nautor Swan sailing yachts are largely designed in Italy, built in Finland, and now will have an enhanced presence in Asia. Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht dealership, is the exclusive representative in Asia for Nautor Swan.

Whether the Swan 108 is plying the waters of the Mediterranean or Asia, her sleek design, exquisite sailing performance and thoughtful customisations are sure to get her noticed.
