Set to premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the 80 Eco showcases the builder’s groundbreaking green tech, from ultra-thin solar panels on the hulls, superstructure and mast to a hydrogeneration system, ultra-light lithium batteries and ultra-efficient air-conditioning. By François Trégouët.

Pictured sailing in Dubai, the Sunreef 80 Eco offers a silent, vibration-free cruising experience

In its 20 years of constructing high-end custom catamarans, Sunreef has built a unique and enviable place in the world of multihulls.

Founded by Frenchman Francis Lapp, the Polish brand has made a global name for itself for its large and luxurious catamarans – and is now combining these assets with eco-friendly technology. So, is the innovative Sunreef 80 Eco trying to solve an impossible equation? We went in search of the answer in the waters of the Gulf.

In the Dubai Marina district, near the artificial islands of Palm Jumeirah, Sunreef’s first Eco sailing cat fits perfectly into its environment. Everything in Dubai is about excess, whether it’s the length of the pontoons or the relentless heat, but we arrive at the 80 Eco in a small car – electric, of course.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

Photovoltaic cells are integrated into the hull topsides, superstructure and mast

Lapp is the owner of the yacht, naming it Marie-Joseph in tribute to his parents, with his family travelling to the UAE from France for this special launch event. The catamaran is worth the trip, exhibiting electric propulsion, intelligent energy management and new solar panel technology.

The shipyard’s green tech is most evident in the photovoltaic cells integrated into the metallic navy-blue hull and superstructure, which shine like a thousand lights under the Gulf sun.

MONITORING ALL SYSTEMS

At either the lower helm or on the flybridge, the large touch screens allow you to control and monitor all on-board functions, from the two 180kW electric motors to the opening and closing of the electric curtains. The ergonomics and reactivity of the interfaces really are a credit to the shipyard.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The flybridge includes a helm station, loose seats and two treadmills

Lapp initially worked in Poland in electricity for the construction industry and his experience in the field has helped Sunreef pioneer onboard technology. Three years and six months after presenting the electric Sunreef 60 sailing yacht E in Cannes, we can see how successfully the technology has been mastered.

What’s more, operating everything is intuitive. Monitoring of the main battery bank, composed of five lithium units of 183 Ah at 600V each, is the cornerstone of the system. State of charge, discharge, temperature, voltage, consumption – all the information is immediately accessible and easily readable in figures or graphs.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

Sunset on the flybridge

With fingertip control, you can switch to the page for the two electric motors. Like the batteries, whose compartment is air-conditioned, they’re monitored by thermal cameras that detect any abnormal rise in temperature. The interface also allows monitoring of diesel tanks, fresh water, waste water, pumps, lighting, navigation lights and so on.

Delivering a catamaran that’s both innovative and reliable was a major challenge. Many functions incorporate redundancy, with one piece of equipment in use and another on standby, but immediately available. This is the case with the inverter, working off the 24V batteries to power lighting, electronics and blinds.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The foredeck offers a full-beam outdoor terrace with sunken seating

Somewhat incongruously, the boat also has two generators as a safety backup, although they hadn’t been used so far, according to the skipper. In the event of the batteries’ amperage dropping too low, a generator would start automatically. Manually switched on for a demonstration, it’s inaudible in its double cocoon.

SOLAR COVERAGE

On board the Sunreef 80 Eco, the company’s engineers have managed to install 1,720sqft (160sqm) of solar panels and this is the first yacht featuring the technology across the hull topsides and around the carbon mast, which is conductive. It’s a real technological achievement, described as a revolution by the shipyard.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The huge hydraulic platform can be raised to cockpit level

In addition to covering an exceptional area, these panels have unique characteristics. They’re less than a millimetre thick, as strong as the composite hull, flexible, relatively light at 0.3 lbs per square foot (1.5kg/sqm) and efficient.

As no existing solar technology met such demanding specifications, Sunreef embarked on a new business by designing – and now manufacturing – their own photovoltaic cells. The connections, the installation, and the way to replace any cells in the event of damage are all jealously guarded secrets.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The aft cockpit makes the most of the almost 38ft beam, with a large dining table and a day bed to starboard

At anchor, when conditions are good during the day, the energy produced by the solar panels on the Sunreef 80 Eco can surpass the consumption of the boat, even with the air-conditioning on. The charging intensity, due only to solar energy, can theoretically reach 20kW.

HEADING OUT

As we come off the dock, the absolute silence and the total lack of vibration offer a new sensation on board. Instead, we hear the soft notes of a virtuoso pianist playing live in the immense saloon, the live music highlighting the yacht’s noiseless performance. Furthermore, a hydrogeneration system can add to the on-board charging systems.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The saloon is flanked by two huge C-shaped sofas and surrounded by huge windows, ensuring the interior is bathed in natural light

The 5ft 3in-high windows, the aft bay window opening to a width of more than 10ft and the cameras in the mast offering a bird’s eye view of the platform allow piloting from the lower helm station, which is on starboard side. But it’s from the flybridge that, with his fingertips, the skipper plays with the two motors and the bow thruster.

Heading out to the first anchorage under motor, we reached 10 knots at full power. More reasonably, the cruising speed is around seven knots. The consumption is then 30kW per engine and the electronic displays assure us we have 8hrs of full autonomy without any recharging.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

A huge table can be set up to seat as many as 15 guests

Apart from the aft hydraulic platform, everything on board is electric, from the winches to the furling of the headsails and the cooker hobs.

Given that the most ecological way to travel is under sail, the fully-battened mainsail is traditionally mounted on batten cars and not a furler. The expected performance under sail in light winds is modest, but the waterline length ensures it averages above 10 knots if the wind exceeds 15 knots.

CUSTOM-MADE INTERIOR

As always with boats from the Gdansk manufacturer, the layout inside is entirely modular, both in the distribution of volumes and in the decor. With thick carpeting, noble materials and careful lighting, we are firmly in the world of luxury that seduces both celebrities – from tennis legend Rafael Nadal to F1 star Fernando Alonso – and more discreet owners.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

Forward is the lower helm and a bar, as the main galley is in the port hull

Invariably, aboard a catamaran with the dimensions of a tennis court, the space and volumes are impressive, starting from the aft cockpit and into the vast saloon, which is flanked by two large C-shaped sofas. There’s enough space between them to set up a large dining table. Heading forward, you pass the helm and the bar on the way to the foredeck or forward terrace.

There are multiple options for the layout of each hull. On this unit, the galley occupies the aft end of the port side, while forward are a guest cabin and the owner’s suite, both accessible via a second companionway.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

The cabins offer incredible levels of luxury

In the starboard hull, there are three cabins including one for the crew. The night zone offers controlled temperature, absolute silence, high-end bedding, marble in the bathrooms and a sea view through the large windows.

Up on the flybridge, the 360-degree view is impressive, and under way, the apparent wind is quickly noticeable. On the other hand, at anchor it will be particularly solicited.

Sunreef, 80, Eco, Francis Lapp, Cannes Yachting Festival, range, solar, power, electric, panels, hulls, mast, superstructure, lithium batteries, hydrogeneration, air-conditioning

Luxurious materials are evident in the bathrooms

Under its rigid roof (covered with solar panels), the flybridge hosts a helm, a saloon area for 10 guests, an outdoor galley, a lounge with modernist armchairs and even two treadmills. Too bad these run on electricity instead of producing it!

Luxury Fashion On The Resurgence of Vacation Dressing: Travel Capsules

The fashion industry’s growing focus on resort-wear and vacation dressing reaches an all time high as luxury fashion brands release travel capsule collections to cater to the consumer’s vacation state of mind.

Saint Laurent Summer Capsule Rive Droite

As our world keeps changing around us, so does the fashion calendar. For decades, the traditional seasonal calendar has served the industry well. Designers put their Spring Summer collections on the catwalk in September, and then showcase an Autumn Winter drop six months later, but those days are long gone. A much-needed reset of the fashion industry is something that has been highlighted during the past few years. And whilst we have previously discussed the jump to virtual fashion and the effects on traditions like street style, it seems that another tradition of the industry has come under scrutiny — the outdated fashion seasons.

Saint Laurent Summer Capsule Rive Droite

Despite being motivated by creativity, the fashion industry is rather traditional in terms of business. As a result, it was considered inventive when particular designers began breaching the norms and showcasing their range between the two established seasons. These were known as pre-collections and were often the ready-to-wear selection for a designer before the debut of the more exclusive items.

Once the concept was shown to work, everyone came on board, so much so that the fashion season now consists of four main units: Pre-Spring, Spring Summer, Pre-Fall, and Fall Winter; with brands finding the opportunity to highlight and organise pieces from the two pre-collections into themed wardrobes called “capsule collections”.

How Fashion is Targeting the Travel Rebound

JACQUEMUS-CAMPAIGN-IMAGERY_COURTESY-OF-NET-A-PORTER-1

Dating back more than 100 years, early Cruise or Resort collections were just that — special capsules produced by designers and released between the main collections to cater to wealthy customers that travel. However, as the cost of international travel fell, middle and upper-middle classes began taking trips of their own and these niche lines not only became more popular amongst consumers but also allowed fashion houses huge commercial benefits.

“You don’t relate to seasons, you don’t relate to fashion shows, you relate to a spirit of mind.” said luxury correspondent Tamison O’Connor “It’s really attractive for the true luxury customer who sees these items as a fun way to accessorise a holiday, but it’s also an entry point for more aspirational and younger consumers,” she continues.

JACQUEMUS-CAMPAIGN-IMAGERY_COURTESY-OF-NET-A-PORTER-1

After a year of cancelled trips and staying home, travelling and vacation dressing is witnessing a resurgence like no other. Consumers are looking for clothing to enhance their travel experience and set a vacation state of mind. “What we’ve been hearing from our customers is that she’s thinking of getting away this summer and is eager to buy beachwear and getaway clothes that are fashionable and fun,” emphasised Anu Narayanan, the chief merchandising officer of Anthropologie.

A current holiday wardrobe is no longer solely consisting of swimwear and a cover-up, but encompasses a head-to-toe ensemble. What’s more, shoppers are looking to resortwear that can tell a story — about a brand, a place, or its creator. For example, Jacquemus’ 23-piece capsule collection for Spring 2023 was a tribute to the Sun & Sea art installation by Rugile Barzdziukaite, Vaiva Grainythe and Lina Lapelyte and the work of photographer Massimo Vitali. The beach-themed collection was exclusively released in partnership with Net-A-porter and included summer staples of well-loved Jacquemus designs rendered in his signature, soft-coloured colorways. With cropped linen-blend tops and mint green bucket hats, they picked up on opportunities to engage consumers by building a buzz with the release while staying relevant and affordable with younger consumers.

Dior Beach Capsule

Jacquemus isn’t the only luxury player betting big on vacation dressing. On March 2022, Dior have teamed up with “Parley for the Oceans” to unveil the new season of its “Beachwear Capsule” line. Dior’s mission for the house is to become more eco-innovative and sustainable, and with Parley’s stance against major ocean threats, the two brands have created a collection that comprises a colour palette of blue packable jackets and ochre poplin pants, with some items carrying the “Dior Oblique” pattern, incorporating Parley Ocean Plastic created from up-cycled marine plastic debris and recovered fishing gear. Not only did they capitalise on the current trend of vacation dressing, but they’ve managed to leverage its roots as a label for fashionable, eco-conscious jet-setters, just in time for a post-pandemic vacation surge.

Dior Beach Capsule Riviera

Altogether, this means that as demand for the evolving resort category grows, it is critical for brands and designers to adjust their assortments in order to cater to consumers’ new expectations of the category. To that end, brands have designed collections that extend beyond beachwear and summery themed collections.

“There’s pent up demand,” said chief executive of Mytheresa, Michael Kliger. “It’s just much more than beach and swimwear. It’s catering to consumers all-year round.”

The Diverse Range of Vacation-Themed Capsules

Dior Alps Cestelle Hanania

With winter holidays becoming a more common occurrence, it seems obvious for fashion houses to cater to colder-climate vacations. During the 2000s, brands realised the opportunity to sell garments all-year round, thus Luxury ski-wear was born. Luxury fashion houses such as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Prada started designing more winter capsules specifically for ski vacations. It continues today as the rise of social media sees more influencers and celebrities flaunt their holiday outfits. Throughout the 2010s, the Kardashian-Jenner family posted pictures of them skiing on their social media accounts and in the 2020s, models like the Hadid sisters influenced people to buy and wear luxury ski gear.

In present time, Fendi recently released their new Winter Sports capsule collection, featuring sustainable tech-wear along with bags and winter accessories. Winter hues like cold grey, white, baby and ice blue were strewn across the highly technical wardrobe, strongly linking back to the aesthetics of the Roman fashion house.

Loewe x ON Capsule Collection

Similarly, hiking-themed capsule collections have emerged from mega fashion houses like Loewe. Taking on the great outdoor adventure, they’ve collaborated with performance brand On for a limited-edition capsule collection housing shoes and apparel for the modern adventurer. Focusing on craftsmanship, they reimagined long-established craft skills, applying the handmade to technical pieces. The ready-to-wear pieces sport a unique blend of performance properties and fashionable design aspects. Perfect for the individual who seek a holiday centered around the outdoors.

All in all, vacation dressing has become significant to brands. The increase in consumer demand for destination wear is fuelled by the enticing idea of holidays as an escape from routine and a chance to have new experiences. Shoppers are constantly on the look out for outfits that enhance their travel experience, and with this new trend of vacation-themed capsule collections, brands are able to showcase their creativity in design while selling their garments all-year round. It is no doubt that in time, holiday capsules are going to come back bigger than ever.

The 130’ Bellissima is Riva’s largest Flybridge model

Riva has launched the first 130’ Bellissima at its La Spezia yard. The yacht has been sold to an American owner and is the largest model in the builder’s Flybridge range, which also includes the 90’ Argo, 102’ Corsaro Super and 110’ Dolcevita.

The 130’ Bellissima is the first planing flybridge in Riva’s range to extend across three full decks, with a full-widebody design, while remaining under 300GT.

The 40m yacht with an almost 8m beam is the brainchild of Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, which has designed all Riva’s yachts since 1994, and was developed with Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “Riva Bellissima is a superlative boat, in both name and fact. As the new flagship in the flybridge range, she has all my admiration and enthusiasm.

“This is a magical year for Riva. Our yards are all in a state of grace and the results are there for everyone to see: beautiful boats, ecstatic owners. When you see a Riva cruising on the water, a Riva Bellissima, everything stops and you can pause the world to enjoy a tailor-made miracle, an aesthetic experience that words can’t describe.”

The exterior styling features carbon-fibre, steel and glass. The windshield is made with spherical crystals and features the typical counter-curvature, while the hull window design is based on a black line that runs along the silvery side of the boat and rises towards the deck.

Extensive glazed surfaces allow natural light to illuminate the interiors of the main and upper decks and offer magnificent panoramic views. The main saloon features glass and polished rosewood, and has ceilings over 2m high. The master suite is on the main deck, while there are four en-suite cabins and a large lobby on the lower deck.

The exteriors introduce a new concept for the stern area, which is divided into a large beach club and a generous cockpit, offering over 60sqm of liveable space. A jet-ski, tender and Seabob are stored in the port hull side.

On the upper deck, the aft outdoor area is set up as a dining area seating 10, while the side walkways create two closed, private balconies. The sun deck offers further outdoor space for guests.

Riva 130’ Bellissima is powered by twin MTU engines rated 2,638mph each, giving her an estimated top speed of 26 knots and a cruising speed of 23 knots.

Qingdao has won the Clipper 2019-20 Race, after over 40,000nm, six ocean crossings and eight legs. The Clipper 2019-20 Race started in London in September 2019 and after a two-year pause at its halfway point due to the global pandemic, restarted from the Philippines in March this year.

Skippered by Chris Brooks, Qingdao has been the team to beat from early in the circumnavigation and scored a total of 145 points, 10 clear of Punta del Este. The team won five races in the 2019-20 edition, more than any other team, and was also on the podium eight times in 14 races.

Leaving Derry-Londonderry for Race 15, Qingdao was nine points clear and placed third to cement victory. The team also won the most Scoring Gate points in the 11 months of racing, taking 14 coveted bonus points.

Punta del Este, skippered by Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez, moved into second position overall after the previous sprint across the North Atlantic. Like Qingdao, Punta del Este was in the lead pack of Race 15, coming fourth in the final stage and cementing its second place in the Clipper 2019-20 Race standings with 135 points.

Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez, the first Spanish Skipper to compete in the Clipper Race, led his team with the spirit of Punta del Este, the city and yacht club it represented on the global route.

The team, known for its loud and enthusiastic approach to sailing but always with a firm competitive edge, won the very first race of the circumnavigation and went on to secure six podium positions overall. Regularly the fastest yacht in the Dell Latitude Rugged Ocean Sprints, Punta del Este gained more Ocean Sprint bonus points than any other team (22 points).

The Italian builder will debut the S7 sports yacht model at the 2023 edition of the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show in Germany.

Azimut, S7, Dusseldorf, sport, Boot

The S7 has an Alberto Mancini exterior

Azimut will stage the world premiere of the S7 at Boot Dusseldorf from January 21-29, 2023. The 71-footer features exterior design by Alberto Mancini and will join the S6, S8 and Grande S10 in the Italian builder’s sports yacht series.

“The new model is the sports boat with the most technologically advanced naval architecture in the category, significantly reducing fuel consumption on one hand while offering more living space on the other,” Azimut says.

A more compact IPS triple propulsion system and a hull designed by Azimut’s technical team, in partnership with Volvo engineers, improves fuel efficiency, while the use of carbon-fibre also helps reduce overall weight and increase volume without affecting stability.

Azimut, S7, Dusseldorf, sport, BootSaloon on the Azimut S7

Azimut says such features reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent at medium and high speeds, while providing sufficient surface area to offer a generous layout including a large lower deck with five cabins and a garage for two water toys. The main deck is designed around outdoor and indoor lounge areas and a spacious galley.

Azimut is represented in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, Taiwan and Singapore by Marine Italia.

Ahpo’s Monaco debut reflects Chinese heritage

Ahpo’s Monaco debut reflects Chinese heritage

SHARE

Lürssen’s spectacular 115m Ahpo makes her debut at Monaco Yacht Show in September and, if the syllables are separated to Ah Po, she may be more widely recognised as perhaps the first superyacht with a real Chinese name.
Words: Bruce Maxwell
Photos: Guillaume Plisson

Sleek, stylish lines are used to project a powerful profile, reminiscent of her 86m predecessor Quattroelle

The owner, an experienced yachtsman born in the Caribbean of part-Chinese descent, has told the world’s largest superyacht yard Lürssen that Ahpo is “the phonetic pronunciation of the Chinese pictogram meaning Grand Lady”. In Chinese dialects Ahpo can also translate as Grandma, and is used in various other Stately Lady senses.

Wealthy Chinese own a whole fleet of superyachts, kept in Asia-Pacific and elsewhere, but they began by calling them Asean Lady and Vanguard, and then a spectrum of names including White Rabbit, La Baronessa, Sea Shaw, Elysium, Saluzi and Zen. There are many other renowned vessels in Asia alone.

White Rabbit and Saluzi refer to fêted animals in Chinese folklore, but no private yacht owners, to our knowledge, have so far used an actual Chinese name for their vessels.

Nuvolari Lenard handled exterior and interior design

A prior connection to Ahpo’s present Caribbean-cum-Canadian owner is the Singapore and Malaysian developer David Eng, who back in 1998 built the 60m La Baronessa now Pearl in Wisconsin. It was the largest private aluminium motor yacht in the world.

His captain was the son of a Norwegian seafarer and a Borneo princess, who went barefoot on the bridge, and like David took up golf. I was among those who headed off into the Great Lakes, clutching our Smithsonian histories of the region. Also aboard was a handsome young man called Dan Lenard, representing the new naval architecture and yacht design outfit Nuvolari Lenard, based in Venice.

David presently owns the 52m Elysium, often cruising the azure Andaman Sea off Phuket in Thailand. It was previously called Quantum of Solace in John Staluppi’s long line of yachts named after James Bond films. The fledgling Nuvolari Lenard, meanwhile, rapidly climbed the ranks to become one of the industry’s highest-regarded designers.

A spacious salon

They later caught the eye of Ahpo’s owner, as did Lürssen, and at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show all three presented an earlier combined effort, the 86m Quattroelle. She was immaculate, and the name again hinted at esoteric thinking. It means Four Ls, and those Ls were Love, Life, Liberty and Luxury.

Fast forward to 2022 and the new Ahpo, 115m overall, is the centrepiece of the Lürssen display at Monaco Yacht Show. Nuvolari Lenard are again the chosen exterior and interior designers. Ahpo is available for charter in the Caribbean in winter and the Med in summer, through Moran Yacht and Ship, the substantial American agency which supervised the build on behalf of the owner, with whom they have a long-standing relationship. The rate is a relatively attractive €2.5m a week.

She has accommodation for 16 guests in eight immense staterooms, and four staff cabins for security, a nanny, or other auxiliary staff. Altogether 36 crew are carried.

A lovely protected winter garden which can be arranged for summer or winter conditions

Notable amenities include a two-story owner’s apartment, and an enormous beach club, hammam, plunge pool, sauna, massage room and beauty salon. Her forward helideck is commercially compliant, and available for use in charters.

“For us,” says Peter Lürssen, “the task was to build a motor yacht for a repeat client, an upgrade from his 86m Lürssen. He has many years of owning and chartering yachts behind him, and required top-notch design and engineering as well as sea-going comfort for his family, guests and crew.”

The early brief for the interior was to link all the elements of nature, harmoniously balanced throughout the yacht, with a pallet of colourful and sophisticated materials. Flowers and plants are a distinct theme on board, a favourite of the owner’s wife. The outcome is a stylish, grown-up environment with beautiful bespoke pieces of furniture framed against a more muted, tasteful background.

Beach Club and Wellness Centre astern have imaginative layouts using contemporary mosaic tiles and premium woods

The 205sqm beach club and wellness area on the lower deck has real impact and is a fitting place for guests to step aboard. Beyond the transom door, a large bamboo grove is encased in backlit frosted glass, which forms a stunning backdrop to a stylish bar on one side and a luxurious massage room on the other.

In contrast to this zen atmosphere is an explosion of coloured mosaic tiles which make up the hammam and day head, as well as the jacuzzi and plunge pool that form the central focus.

When at anchor, an open sea terrace means guests can enjoy their own private living room at water level thanks to a contemporary sofa and coffee table set-up. Further forward is a luxurious 12-seater cinema, complete with proper armchairs and a bespoke wallpaper that replicates the mosaic design of the spa.

An 8m pool has counter-current flows for serious swimmers

Just down the hall is one of the yacht’s most pleasantly surprising areas, a glass walkway through the engine room. This futuristic addition allows the owners and guests to view the impressive engines and mechanical set-up.

Above on the main deck, a large conference room aft boasts as its centrepiece a beautiful custom table with an antique map of Jamaica engraved in bronze and surrounded by deep blue resin sitting under an eye-catching crystal chandelier. Sliding doors allow this to be a contained, private working environment. When desired, the doors open to reveal the main salon, an elegant, formal space with a self-playing Steinway piano.

Further forward, another set of doors open into the formal dining room. Having these three distinct areas together on the same deck means that as well as somewhere to relax and unwind, Ahpo is also a functional working environment where one’s business and pleasure can co-exist without crossing paths.

The grand staircase depicts an olive tree, and a striking crystal sculpture hangs from the ceiling

Also on this deck is the bespoke wine display with individual, walk-in sections that can be tempered accordingly. This was requested right in the initial layout, and provides an interesting talking point among guests.

The centre of the yacht is dominated by a grand staircase, accessible at all guest levels. The staircase itself represents a path and depicts an olive tree that grows up to the sky, surrounded by cranes and other nature-themed decor.

A striking crystal sculpture hangs from the ceiling, composed of falling feathers, each built by hand. The accent marbles change on each deck, acting as a subtle map of Blu Onyx, Green J’adore and Grey Lilac, with the floor always Calacatta Borghini and White Onyx for the petals, complemented by a bronze balustrade.

Extensive master suite is spread over two levels and can be kept completely private, even if guests are arriving on the foredeck helipad

The owner’s deck takes a different theme. Its informal lounge is contemporary and convivial, with a colourful interpretation of the universe in the carpet and a striking latticed wood pattern running throughout. Three white curved sofas create a focal entertaining space, while a bespoke bar and a games table caters to guests of all ages.

On the aft deck, an enormous custom 16-seater dining table stands proud within a winter garden that can be completely open or closed to the elements thanks to a complex set of sliding and folding glass doors. This ensures that the space can be used to entertain and relax with family and friends in any weather and at any time of year, ensuring one of the great joys of owning a yacht isn’t confined to traditional summer seasons.

Lots of greenery and rattan furniture is the theme, evoking a bygone golden era in a stylish and fresh way. Past the dining area and the second set of sliding doors is an area dominated by two semicircles of comfortable, informal sofas, providing ample space for everyone to come together after a meal and relax or take in the sunsets and sunrises.

Both bathrooms feature remarkable tubs, hers in rose gold and copper

Directly above on the upper deck is the swimming pool, and by no means a token one. At over 8m long and 1.2m depth, plus a counter-current system, it has been designed specifically for swimming, not simply cooling off.

For those who want just a quick dip, there is a self-contained jacuzzi on one side of the pool with large sun pad seating flanking the other side. A large bar and relaxed low-level seating make this a favourite for informal family days.

Also on this deck is full service gym, one of the largest on any yacht, with multiple machines and equipment and stunning views out over the water on both sides.

The final aft deck space, on the bridge deck, has been left unencumbered, making it a completely flexible area. Open to the sun, it can also be protected by casual fabric shades. Moveable furniture and sun loungers can be placed here or it can be left open as both a sunrise yoga platform and midnight dance floor.

Forward on this deck is the bridge itself. Rare to have this high up, it provides the crew with unparalleled views for manoeuvring the 115m-long, 18m-wide yacht. Designed more like a guest space than a traditional crew area with premium woods and leathers, it is smart and high tech.

Ahpo, Lürssen, Peter Lürssen, Monaco Yacht Show, Nuvolari Lenard, White Rabbit, La Baronessa, Sea Shaw, Elysium, Saluzi, Zen

Another elegant salon has a self-playing Steinway grand piano

The unique location also means the ship’s office and captain’s cabin can be together and away from the guest areas, and enables perhaps Ahpo’s most standout, innovative feature, the duplex owner’s apartment. This is made up of a large 245sqm master cabin on the owner’s deck and a 95sqm panoramic salon on the upper deck above, joined together by a grand, private staircase.

The owner’s cabin is spacious and cosy all at once. The master bed’s custom fabric headboard replicates the mosaic found in the master bathrooms and represents the maple tree leaves and blue birds which recur in the room décor. A custom-designed breakfast table in the same tinted lacewood timber as the rest of the room and mother of pearl sits at the front, while two reclining sofas flank either side of the bed.

The private deck space here is similarly cosy. A semi-circle sofa and coffee table face out to sea on recessed balconies on each side, cocooned into a quiet corner thanks to glass bulwarks.

Back in the owner’s suite, his and her bathrooms and dressing rooms up the ante with impressive and ornate mosaic patterns and bold marbles.

In both bathrooms, there are impressive freestanding tubs, crafted by hand and themed black and gold for his and rose gold and copper for her. Both bathrooms have crystal chandeliers which match the colours of the rooms.

Ahpo, Lürssen, Peter Lürssen, Monaco Yacht Show, Nuvolari Lenard, White Rabbit, La Baronessa, Sea Shaw, Elysium, Saluzi, Zen

An immaculate setting for more formal dining

The lobby of the master cabin also follows Ahpo’s distinct theme of trees and nature with two glass columns engraved with maple leaves and with a red maple tree inside flanking the entrance hallway which leads to the staircase and the salon above.

The panoramic salon is in the area traditionally given over to the master cabin, forward on the upper deck, and it enjoys 180-degree views over the bow. Two beautiful, custom desks flank each end of the salon, turning the room into a private office if so desired. This means that there is a clear delineation between places to work and places to sleep, if the owners want to have a private external meeting that it is kept separate from the sleeping quarters.

“The owners are extremely happy with this solution. It suits them and their lifestyle very well,” says Carlo Nuvolari. “It was an unusual design idea that we decided to implement and they are pleased with the outcome.”

There are seven guest cabins on board with two on the owner’s deck, four on the main deck and one on the lower deck. The two cabins on the owner’s deck are designated for specific family members and enjoy their own colour themes of pink and green, chosen by the family to distinguish the two.

“The owner was very interested in every detail, and was always close to the project,” says Peter Lürssen. “He visited the shipyard as often as he could and between his visits was kept up to date on progress by his representative at the shipyard.”

Paradise is subjective, but when there is so much thought and design put into each space, it is hard to argue that paradise hasn’t been found on a yacht such as Ahpo.

Sydney show faces headwinds

Despite the success of the Sanctuary Cove event in May, the Sydney International Boat Show could present challenges for Mulpha Events. By Bruce Maxwell.

Sydney Boat Show’s central location is so good it attracts too many non-boaters

Mulpha Events’ takeover of Australian boat shows saw strong sales at its existing Sanctuary Cove venue on the Gold Coast late May, but seems to face headwinds in refloating Sydney International Boat Show from July 28-August 1. Neither of the country’s premier production builders, Riviera and Maritimo, are taking part in Sydney, an event that is ideally situated within walking distance of the CBD high-rises in Australia’s largest city.

Reasons for their reluctance are varied. One is that a surge in orders has blown out delivery dates for popular models, even with steadily increased capacity. Another is the cost of taking part. A third underlying concern is that the Sydney show is attracting too many fender-kickers, rather than genuine buyers.

In other words, because of its high exposure in Darling Harbour, just around the Harbour Bridge headland from central Circular Quay, all sorts of locals and tourists throng pontoons and Sydney Convention Centre hardstanding floors, crowding out actual boaters, and frustrating exhibitors.

This can be partly overcome with more expensive entrance tickets and dedicated boater and VIP days, as happens elsewhere. But the show also needs to re-establish its roots with the motor boat, sailing and fishing clubs that fringe Sydney Harbour’s foreshores, Botany Bay, Port Hacking, the Pittwater and Broken Bay, and further afield, Wollongong, Jervis and Batemans Bays, and Newcastle and Port Stephens.

Members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, and Middle Harbour Yacht Club need solid reasons to visit again, as do those at the Royal Motor Yacht Clubs in Point Piper and Newport. Owners with berths at recently-sold D’Albora Marinas sites in Rushcutters Bay, Cabarita, The Spit, Akuna Bay and elsewhere want to know how Sydney Boat Show works for them. Old formulas may require more than a cursory makeover.

Surprisingly, vast Sydney Harbour is so rules-bound that private boaters do not have a wide choice of destinations when weekend passage-making, so a Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) campaign, with State Government support, to increase and publicise the options could prove a popular theme. A marina survey released recently further identified “inadequate marina berths in many locations around the country. It shows that occupancy rates and waitlists have continued to grow over the last decade, despite an increase in storage spaces”, says MIA President Andrew Chapman.

Last but not least, Sydney, located at 34°S, is held in mid-winter. It is often sunny but cold, not conducive to boating, and the water like San Francisco is bracing. Many owners have taken their vessels north to Queensland. Sometimes 30-40 knot fronts come through that see flags and burgees stand out stiffly on their poles. Opinions vary, but a balmier weather time-slot could help sales.

Sydney Boat Show began as an onshore event in the Horden Pavilion in Moore Park in 1968, where it remained until 1985. Then it had a temporary facility in Pyrmont in 1986-88, introducing an in-water display, before moving to Darling Harbour in 1989, as Sanctuary Cove also got under way on the Gold Coast, in the epicentre of Australia’s boating industry.

Upgrades to the Convention Centre at Darling Harbour meant further disruptions in 2014-2016, and the 50th edition of SIBS, with integrated shows afloat and ashore in Darling Harbour, was finally held in 2017. Three years later, as Covid-19 became a factor, the trade body that owns the show, called the Boating Industry Association (BIA), decided to part company with their long-time show organiser, Domenic Genua.

The 2020 event was postponed, like many others abroad, and 2021 was a half-hearted “festival” rather than a fully-fledged boat show, although Australia was relatively Covid-free, and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) resumed in May 2021 with its largest display and visitor turnout ever.

Extended Harbour One berths in Sanctuary Cove, at right, are now covered, in an A$10 million marina redevelopment

The latter, owned by Malaysian property conglomerate Mulpha, which has extensive interests in Australia including Hayman Island and InterContinental Hotels, was the 33rd SCIBS, and led to the formal emergence of Mulpha Events under the continuing helm of Johan Hasser. An agreement was reached last December between Mulpha Australia CEO Greg Shaw and BIA President Darren Vaux for Mulpha Events “to be appointed as Event Delivery Partner for all BIA boat shows across Australia.

Mulpha Australia Chairman is Lee Seng Huang, who also has a substantial stake in financial services firm Sun Hung Kai in Hong Kong. Lee studied at Sydney University, and owns a 100ft racing yacht called Scallywag, which he campaigns in regional regattas including the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Sanctuary Cove, which saw off a rival BIA event at Royal Pines in its first decade, has only recently weathered another long-term challenge from Riviera and Gold Coast City Marina, both of which are in the multi-yard Gold Coast Marine Precinct across the Coomera River and slightly upstream from Sanctuary Cove.

These two venues “shared” the show in 2000, which proved a disaster, and Riviera-GCCM ran sporadic competing events at their premises in the past 20 years, including over the same dates as SCIBS, throwing down the gauntlet. Marine accessory makers with contracts at GCMP yards had to choose, or run displays at GCMP and Sanctuary Cove, an expensive exercise.

Riviera’s 465 SUV on debut at Sanctuary Cove

Happily, exhibitors are now back “in the same boat”, which better suits boating-related visitors, as they no longer have to tramp around working boatyards. Riviera returned to Sanctuary Cove with an impressive private pier exhibit in the expanded reaches of Harbour One. GCCM, a refit and repair outfit with alternative berthing, has a Sanctuary Cove presence too.

The sheer ambiance of Sanctuary Cove’s Marine Village probably won out in the endgame. Full of high-end restaurants and boutiques, it has become a gathering place of the rich and famous backed by urbane residents in the substantial but unseen gated reaches of what was billed as Australia’s first integrated tourism resort, where villa purchases do not require approval of the Foreign Investment Review Board.

A single road entry restricts visitors to about 50,000 per show – Monaco sees circa 30,000 – and those unable to book at the on-site InterCon generally stay at Main Beach, where Marina Mirage, the Sheraton and Palazzo Versace front the Broadwater and Gold Coast beaches, and commute by boat, limousine or helicopter from there.

Marina Mirage used to run its own display of small superyachts during SCIBS, backed by Geoff Lovett International now GLI, as well as Ensign Yacht Brokers and Ray White Marine, but this year GLI’s Perry James returned to Sanctuary Cove, in the new covered larger berths of Harbour One’s extension, and said he was pleased with the response. Representing Benetti and lately Australian-owned Moonen, among others, he would be back next year.

Similarly, Leigh-Smith Yachts has long retraced its steps from GCCM back to Sanctuary Cove, and their one-time broker Grant Torrens, who set up another successful dealership and contemporary boat show on the Sovereign Islands, was at Sanctuary Cove last year. All played important roles in getting SCIBS started, and are again “in the fold”.

The 465 SUV was one of 12 Riviera models displayed

Largest yacht on display at Sanctuary Cove was the Sanlorenzo 40m Alloy 4A, occupying the same potential single berth as a 20m Horizon, although the official LOA for this dock is 50m+. Southport Yacht Club in the Broadwater has a newly-opened 63m berth, and GCCM also takes small to mid-range superyachts, restricted on occasions by draught due to silting in the Coomera River.

This was the first time the 61 new and 46 covered berths, costing A$10 million, have been revealed in their full glory, and it was an impressive sight. The shape of the covers are very different to earlier efforts at The Boat Lagoon in Thailand. There are gaps in the relatively high angular structure, and look as though sun and rain could still creep in, but talking to captains with boats in situ, they said the protection was most effective.

Starting the show at this InterCon end, where the VIP Lagoon Lounge is located and a sparsely patronised Captain’s Lounge occupied what used to be my favourite Thai restaurant, it was evident that, apart from core Riviera and Maritimo offerings, boats built in Europe and Asia dominate the larger vessels displayed at this event, and the Asian ones are at least of comparable quality.

From Britain, Princess Yachts, which ran its own show after taking over Grant Torrens’ Sovereign Islands base in years past, had an immaculate multi-model display which featured their upgraded F Class Flybridge Yacht. Principal dealer Greg Haines, who used to be Maritimo’s export manager, said “there has been lots of interest in the Princess brand, with plenty of people attending despite the wet weather on the weekend”.

Sunseeker has had a smaller presence since WA-based Australian dealer Alf Barbagallo’s halcyon days on the East Coast, but their Brad Rodgers was back on F Pier.

Horizon focused on the FD80 at Sanctuary Cove

Horizon and Ocean Alexander, two of Asia’s largest builders headquartered in Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second city, were prominent in the newly-expanded part of the Harbour One marina. Horizon is based at Sanctuary Cove anyway, and whereas they sold only occasional large motor yachts to Australians in years past, nowadays their RP (110-120ft), FD (75-125ft), E (75-100ft) and V (68-80ft) models are much in demand.

Showcased at Sanctuary Cove were three new Fast Displacement (FD) Series yachts, among them the brand-new FD 80 Skyline. Specified for the Australian market, this boat features a four-stateroom layout and a notable contemporary interior design. Ocean Alexander has focused on the American and now Australian markets, but likewise their Dan Mundy, head of Global Distribution, Marketing, Service and Dealer Development said they too were establishing sales networks in Europe and Asia.

Ocean Alexander launched its Explorer 28m at Sanctuary Cove

Alexander Marine Australia’s principal dealer Todd Holzapfel proved particularly knowledgeable, and as we walked through the 28m Explorer making her world debut one morning, the layout and finish on this vessel were little short of superb. This is a small superyacht of considerable calibre. At Fort Lauderdale late last year, Ocean Alexander introduced the pinnacle of their Revolution Series, the 35m R.

Palm Beach Motor Yachts moved to the new in-water display area, and was once more represented by famous maxi yachtsman Mark Richards, who has in tandem overseen the streamlining of Grand Banks models built in Malaysia. Former GB designer Tony Fleming’s well-established Fleming Yachts had a prominent position as well.

Palm Beach GT60 is put through her paces

Riviera staged unquestionably the leading display, however, with its own pier and no less than 12 models being shown, including Australian premieres of the 78 Motor Yacht, one of which is bound for a Phuket client, plus the 465 SUV and the 4600 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition.

Said Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst: “Riviera welcomed many returning and new owners to our family with yachts purchased across our exceptional 24-model collection of sport yachts, SUVs, sport motor yachts and motor yachts as part of the exclusive Riviera Festival of Boating held at our SCIBS display”.

Luxury cruiser builder Maritimo was in its usual prime place at the start of F Pier, and managing director Tom Barry-Cotter said it had an exceptional reception for its three global exclusives, the M60 Flybridge Motor Yacht, the M600 Offshore Flybridge, and the S600 Offshore Sedan, with a number of sales on the board.

Maritimo will announce a Japanese dealer and look for others in Asia

Multihulls are much in demand in Australia and elsewhere, and form an increasingly important sector at both Sanctuary Cove and Sydney. Along with European and Asian-built boats, they have become mainstay exhibitors.

Taking Multihull Solutions as one example, it already plays a prominent role at Sanctuary Cove, Sydney and other regional boat shows. Headquartered in Australia on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, it has sales offices in Singapore and Phuket, and one of the multihull brands it represents, ILIAD, is built in Asia. CEO Mark Elkington goes back a long way with the prominent French brand Fountaine Pajot, discussing new developments in detail with them, including feedback from owners, for both sail and power craft.

Following Sanctuary Cove, Multihull Solutions expected to finalise orders on two Fountaine Pajot Isla 40s and Elba 45s, an Astréa 42 and Aura 51, these all sailing catamarans, and another two Fountaine Pajot motor yachts. In addition, they sold two Neel 43 trimarans and a Neel 51 built in the French sailing capital La Rochelle. Yacht Sales Manager Greg Bolger said these results were “extremely satisfying” considering poor weather on the weekend.

“Despite consistent rain on the last two days, we had a constant stream of visitors”, he said. “There are no indications that this extraordinary demand for our sail and power multihulls will wane any time soon”.

Further contracts for a new ILIAD 50 and an ILIAD 62 were signed at the show, and there was intense interest in upcoming models, such as the ILIAD 53S and the ILIAD 74.

“The first ILIAD 53S will have its global launch at the 2023 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show”, said Elkington. “The success at SCIBS this year reaffirms the company’s goal of creating long-range, luxurious, spacious and customisable catamarans that meet the need of buyers wanting a quality boat, built specifically with each client’s input”.
