Australian builder Riviera and Asia-Pacific dealer Multihull Solutions are among leading exhibitors at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, as organiser Mulpha Events extends its reach to the country’s other shows. By Bruce Maxwell.

Malaysian-owned Mulpha Events Australia, which runs premier Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, is taking a hand in the country’s other leading display in Sydney this year, and will be involved in smaller Boating Industry Association (BIA) expos, such as Brisbane and Adelaide.

An agreement signed between Mulpha Australia CEO Greg Shaw and BIA President Darren Vaux foresees “a collaboration that will enable the delivery of innovative and engaging world-class events with a significant focus on the boating lifestyle, for the benefit of exhibitors, partners, visitors and the broader boating industry”.

BIA will continue to own its stable of boat shows, and retain overall financial control, so exactly how the deal will work in practice is evolving, but there is considerable enthusiasm ahead of the 34th Sanctuary Cove IBS from May 19-22.

SCIBS resumed last year after a 2020 lay-off caused by Covid, the first Asia-Pacific boat show to do so, and 51,000 visitors thronged an expanded layout in what was proclaimed the most successful event to date.

Located in an upmarket resort village and the adjacent berths of Harbour One, it has always had a sheer ambiance factor. Buyers can fly in by helicopter from the downtown Gold Coast or stay onsite at the InterContinental.

Sydney IBS, held in the International Convention Centre and at the custom pontoons of Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour, overlooked by CBD high-rise office blocks and hotels, has missed two years, and will welcome a fresh approach for the scheduled reopening of the 53rd edition from July 28-August 1. About 60,000 visitors attend, and whereas Sanctuary Cove is limited by its singular access road and waterways, turnouts in Sydney could be much higher.

The ILIAD 50 is showing at Sanctuary Cove

“The marine industry here is truly exceptional, and it is one we are dedicated to support and grow”, says Shaw. “As a diversified real estate, hotel and hospitality business, Mulpha is well placed to expand the boat show offering, to attract a broader audience, and to introduce more Australians to the boating lifestyle.”

Mulpha, probably best-known in Southeast Asia at present for its development of the 1,765-acre Leisure Farm in Iskandar Malaysia, began Australian investments in the 1990s with the purchase of Bimbadgen Winery, followed in 2002 by its signature acquisition, the already-famous Sanctuary Cove Resort.

Since then, it has added equally-upmarket Hayman Island Resort in the Whitsunday Islands to the portfolio, along with InterContinental Hotel interests, and the London Marriott, plus diverse other property developments.

Chairman of Mulpha is Lee Seng Huang, also known in Hong Kong for his substantial stake in financial services firm Sun Hung Kai. Lee went to Sydney University, and in recent years has acquired the 100ft racing yacht Scallywag, which he has campaigned in many regional events, including the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

SCIBS was developed independently for its first decade, before the BIA became involved in what had become “Asia-Pacific’s import-export showcase”, but it has had a titular association since, and now it seems the relationship has come full circle with the latest BIA-Mulpha Events co-operation.

Riviera’s Sanctuary Cove display features the new flagship 78 Motor Yacht

Both of Australia’s largest production yards, Riviera and Maritimo, are located nearby in what is effectively the country’s boating epicentre, and they form rival centrepieces for SCIBS, regularly exhibiting a wide range of craft and drawing attention to new designs, technologies and innovations entering the market.

Riviera last year launched a floating VIP owners’ lounge at H Arm in Harbour One, part of the show’s expanded in-water facility, and the popular Riviera Festival of Boating is repeated in May at what yard owner Rodney Longhurst says “will be Riviera’s only exhibition in Australia for 2022”.

The Festival involves boating education and training workshops including courses for lady skippers, mastering knots, lines and hitches, offshore seamanship, understanding radar, navigating at night, and onboard power systems management. These are open to owners and potential clients, and there are a number of exclusive social events, such as the Riviera owners ladies luncheon, a cocktail party and a spectacular gala.

Centrepiece of the display will be the new flagship Riviera 78 Motor Yacht, starring amid a further selection of Sports Motor Yachts, Sport Yachts, SUVs and Flybridge models from across the builder’s award-winning 39-78ft range.

Maritimo as usual starts the F Arm display with a six-vessel line-up including three global launches. Their range spans M-Series Flybridge, S-Series Sedans and X-Series Sport models.

Maritimo is showing its S75

On the slips is their new S75 Sedan Motor Yacht, scheduled to be launched in late 2022. Maritimo Design Director Tom Barry-Cotter says it “draws on a wealth of feedback from owners all over the world, and has been two years in concept development and planning stages. Owner input is something that is constantly used, and sees us creating our most progressive S-Series to date, while retaining the Maritimo DNA of a superb ride, safe walk-around decks and quality finishes from construction through to furniture”.

Rolls Royce Power Systems’ MTU engines are being introduced to M75 Flybridge, S75 Sedan, M600 and S600 models.

Tom’s dad Bill Barry-Cotter, also an offshore power boat racing aficionado, founded both Riviera and later Maritimo, and famously hung his hat on a penchant for consulting owners. He is now celebrating 60 years in the industry.

Sales of multihull vessels have taken off across the Asia-Pacific region in the last decade or two, so three exclusive launches at Sanctuary Cove from Multihull Solutions will command attention. They are premiering the Neel 43 trimaran, Fountaine Pajot’s Isla 40 sailing catamaran, and the Fountaine Pajot MY5, alongside the well-received ILIAD 50, which like the MY5 is a motor catamaran. An FP Elba 45 is also in the mix.

Fountaine Pajot Isla 40 is being shown by Multihull Solutions

The Neel 43 trimaran, just arrived, received nominations for three of the world’s most prestigious awards for 2022, Multihull of the Year, European Yacht of the Year and British Yacht Awards.

Fountaine Pajot’s Isla 40 is larger than her predecessor, the Lucia 40, and comes with three or four cabins plus the possibility of a crew cabin. The renowned yard’s MY4.S also available is a stunning new Sports version that features a voluminous owners’ suite and lovely salon-cockpit combination bathed in natural light.

ILIAD catamarans burst onto the scene in 2019 and the 50-53S-62-74 range is selling like hot cakes, its pedigree based on exceptional range, fuel economy, build quality and value for money.

Horizon, Taiwan and Asia’s largest boat builder, has its Australian HQ at Sanctuary Cove, and has recently sold the impressive Fast Displacement FD90 Sumo, designed by Cor D. Rover, to owners who are basing the boat at Airlie Beach. She has an enclosed skylounge configuration and a five stateroom layout, including an on-deck master.

Horizon Yachts has sold two Fast Displacement FD90s in Australia

This and similar models are being shown, and Horizon itself has by far the widest range of options of any builder in the region. Sumo, which also features floor-to-ceiling windows, is the second FD90 sold in Australia alone.

Mulpha Events General Manager Johan Hasser advises the other new models are scheduled from Ocean Alexander, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Axopar and Whitehaven Motor Yachts. “The recent extension of the marina has allowed SCIBS to occupy every last bit of space,” he says. “As such, there are significantly more boats on the water this year.”

Princess X95

Boat Lagoon Yachting is looking to build on a strong series of sales in the Covid era, which have included the first Princess X95 in Southeast Asia. Among at least 20 global sales of the X Class flagship, which was first unveiled in mid-2020, the ‘Superfly’ yacht was delivered to Phuket in February and handed over to her owner, while a new Princess F62 expected in Singapore in late May is the fifth unit sold in Singapore alone to date.

Despite the complications of the pandemic and fewer in-person interactions with clients, Boat Lagoon Yachting experienced a 10 per cent sales growth in 2021.

BLY sold four Princess Y85 motor yachts last year

The dealer sold five new Y Class yachts last year, comprising two Y85 yachts in Thailand, another two in Singapore and a Y72 in Malaysia. Its F Class sales included units of the F45, F55 (two) and F62 (two) flybridge motor yachts to Singapore.

Boat Lagoon Yachting is also the dealer for Jeanneau and completed many sales of the French builder’s yachts in 2021. The brand’s most popular yachts in Southeast Asia were the Cap Camarat 5.5 CC and Cap Camarat 9.0 CC models, the NC 33 and the Merry Fisher 1095.

A Dominator llumen 28M was among brokerage sales

In the brokerage market, Boat Lagoon Yachting sold over 20 pre-owned yachts ranging in size from 30ft to above 100ft throughout Asia and even in Europe. Sales included Princess V39, S65, 75Y and 78MY models in Thailand, and a Princess 75Y in Singapore.

Elsewhere in Asia, a Princess 49 was sold to Japan, a Prestige 750 was sold in Malaysia and a Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 Sportfly was sold in Singapore, where a Dominator llumen 28M was also sold, arriving earlier this year. Meanwhile, BLY also sold a Sunseeker Manhattan 52 in the Mediterranean.

The 34m Moon Sand Too by Feadship

Boat Lagoon Yachting has also been a partner of Burgess Asia since 2019 and last year helped with the sale in Thailand of the 34m Feadship Moon Sand Too, representing the seller and introducing the buyer in collaboration with Burgess.

The dealer is now focusing on promoting new models from its brands, which include the Princess V50 that debuted at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March and the upcoming Y95, with a model ordered for delivery to Southeast Asia in November 2022. Princess has also recently launched a new version of the F55.

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 1095

Jeanneau’s new sailing yachts include the Sun Odyssey 380, Jeanneau Yachts 60 and flagship Jeanneau Yachts 65, while new motor boats include the Serie 2 version of the Merry Fisher 795 Sport and the recently launched DB/43. Boat Lagoon Yachting also represents Sacs, whose newest model is the Rebel 55.

Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director, Boat Lagoon Yachting, said: “We were delighted that 2021 was a great year for sales at Boat Lagoon Yachting as Covid-19 has made it a difficult time for many businesses. It has meant fewer interactions with customers, especially since boat shows couldn’t be held and fewer customers could have touchpoint experiences with our products and team.

“As such, the team are proud of our success, and we aim to continue as the top luxury yacht dealer in Southeast Asia. In 2022, we’re looking to continue the positive sales trends and build further on our achievements. We also hope to resume private events for customers and affinity partners where possible, and participate in boat shows to display our excellent products and services.”

Wallypower58 will be a highlight of the Venice Boat Show

Ferretti Group will stage the world premiere of the wallypower58 at the Venice Boat Show from May 28-June 5, with the new model marking the start of the revamping of Wally’s iconic range of power boats. The yacht is currently on display in Monaco and following the Venice show, it will be on display at Saint Tropez (June 12-15), Barcelona (June 17-19) and Ibiza (Jun 21-27).

As on the iconic wallypower118, the wallypower58 features double chines in the hull and the air intakes. The superstructure displays typical Wally DNA with its pillarless curved glass, broad side decks, and ample guest areas open but protected.

The cockpit set-up can be adjusted to suit a range of climates, while the adjustable aft-deck sunpad offers multiple lounging options for up to four adults. Folding bulwark ‘wings’ increase space on the aft deck by 25sqm, while a hydraulic aft platform provides easy access to the water as well as tender and water toy storage. Wally’s hydraulic passarelle is included as standard.

The interior is bathed in natural light from overhead, which is why Wally hasn’t included traditional openings to port or starboard. The lower deck offers flexibility for up to four overnight guests and layouts include the full-beam ‘double saloon’ and the ‘flexi-guest’ providing an additional guest cabin. A crew berth with ensuite facilities can be specified in lieu of this cabin.

The Volvo IPS propulsion system features proprietary joystick manoeuvring, dynamic positioning and Assisted Docking software, with a choice of engine power delivering a long range cruising speed of over 30 knots. Wally has chosen a triple configuration for shallow draft, while the ultra-deep-V hull offers stability in even the roughest conditions.

Multihull Solutions recently opened new sales centres in Singapore and Thailand to respond to the significant increase in enquiries and orders across its range of new and pre-owned sail and power multihulls.

Located in the world-renowned ONE°15 Marina in Sentosa Cove, the new Singapore Sales Centre is ideally situated to meet the needs of regional buyers in the market for the world’s finest brands of cruising multihulls, including Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, ILIAD Catamarans, NEEL Trimarans and Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts.

There are also now three Sales Centres throughout Phuket, at the Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven Marina and Ao Po Grand Marina, handling a solid stream of clients looking to purchase or sell in this renowned cruising ground.

Paul Stamp, General Manager of Multihull Solutions Asia, said it was an incredibly exciting time for the industry with several factors driving the surge in demand for cruising cats and tris.

“We’ve seen the popularity of multihulls steadily increase over the past 10 years due to the significant improvements in construction, design and performance across ranges offered by leading shipyardssuch as Fountaine Pajot. This demand has been intensified during the covid pandemic as people are looking to escape the city and rediscover freedom on the water,” Stamp said.

“Cruising multihulls are the perfect platform for seasoned yachties and inexperienced boaties alike to shake off the myriad restrictions and enjoy space, safety and stability at sea, while not forsaking any of the comforts of home.”

This year sees a swag of Multihull Solutions’ represented boats nominated for the world’s most prestigious industry awards, including SAIL’s Best Boat Award, Multihull World’s Multihull of the Year, and European Yacht of the Year.

Among the nominees are Fountaine Pajot’s Samana 59, Isla 40 and MY4.S. NEEL Trimarans is also strongly represented with the NEEL 43 and LEEN 56, while ILIAD Catamarans has turned heads with its upcoming ILIAD 60 nominated for Multihull of the Year. Stamp said it wasn’t just catamarans enjoying the attention from buyers, with cruising trimarans steadily increasing in demand.

“Models such as the new NEEL 43, just landed in Australia, are capturing the imagination of clients seeking a boat that has ample comfort and space while delivering scintillating performance,” he said.

“This latest model by the acclaimed French shipyard has revolutionised the concept of onboard living with its innovative loft design, and the compact tri combines the benefits of a multihull’s space and stability with a monohull’s excellent windward performance and impressive speed.”

The Neel 47 trimaran is another Multihull Solutions option

The NEEL 43 in Australia is now for sale and has been fitted to a very high specification, including performance carbon rigging, removeable cockpit and bimini clears, air conditioning, water maker and remote tender-lift system.

Greg Boller, Multihull Solutions’ Sales and Business Development Manager, said there has been intense interest in the NEEL 43 from Asia-Pacific buyers.

“We’ve been fielding solid enquiries on this new model ever since the shipyard unveiled its early plans. We’re excited to finally have the boat in Australia and don’t expect it to be long before this particular vessel is sold,” Boller said.

Rapido Trimarans is another shipyard making waves with their innovative folding trimarans and their 60ft model that has been hailed as the world’s fastest cruising tri.

“It’s another example of a trimaran that delivers great comfort and luxury, but defies expectation when it comes to performance,” Boller said.

ILIAD Catamarans continues to be one of Multihull Solutions’ strongest performers with considerable interest from Asia-Pacific, European and US buyers in the range of semi-custom, long-range motor yachts.

ILIAD 70 power cat off the Australian coast

Since the brand’s launch in 2019, the company has been flooded with orders for its ILIAD 50 and ILIAD 70, as well as the new ILIAD 60, which is due to arrive in Australia in mid 2022.

The design for the innovative new ILIAD 53S has also just been unveiled to the excitement of cruisers looking for a sporty sedan-style power catamaran that delivers exceptional range and contemporary style.

Multihull Solutions is enjoying its highest sales in the company’s history with forward orders across its range of new yachts stretching into 2024. Patrick Gilot, the company’s brokerage manager, said pre-owned yacht sales are also at a record high, with listings selling before or as soon as they hit the market.

“The current situation, where demand is exceeding supply, is also creating an environment where people are exploring options outside of their original plans. Those who were in the market for a specific sailing catamaran are now considering other models because of the limited supply,” Gilot said.

“We are also seeing people expand their criteria to consider power over sail, or trimarans over cats. It’s certainly an exciting time for the marine industry with such a significant increase in interest, which is due to a number of factors. The prolonged period of lockdowns and a sense of fatigue with living through this pandemic has seen many people want to escape the confines of home and enjoy the freedom of life on the water.

Multihull Solutions’ Asia-Pacific team has great depth of experience with the top-range multihulls it sells and supports

“The inability to easily travel and take traditional holidays has also seen the emergence of new clients, many of whom have never sailed before but are now keen to embrace the cruising lifestyle. This environment has also created movement in the sellers’ market with people realising it’s the perfect time to list the boat they no longer use or sell it because they want to upgrade.”

Multihull Solutions’ brokerage division has been kept busy matching buyers to new listings, with most boats selling before they have a chance to be publicly advertised.

“We’re certainly run off our feet, but it’s a great problem to have,” Gilot said. “We have a very comprehensive programme for pre-owned sales and enjoy being able to take the stress out of listing and selling for our clients. Over the past two years, we’ve sold an unprecedented number of pre-owned yachts and seen a marked shift in the movement of these vessels throughout the Asia-Pacific.

“Clients are realising it is not a big deal to purchase a yacht through us that is located in a different state or country, as we are very experienced in arranging delivery crews or shipping to any port in the world, in addition to managing all of the sea trial, survey, tax and financial factors to make it a seamless and enjoyable process.”

The company is looking forward to a resumption of industry events in 2022 and has plans to have a presence at a variety of upcoming boat shows including the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Sydney International Boat Show, Cannes Yachting Festival and Nautic Paris Boat Show. It regularly attends most Asian events.

With owners spending more on superyachts and charter bookings increasing, brokerage house Fraser looks at trends at the start of 2022.

The total asking price of all superyachts sold in Q1 was €1,200 million (about US$1,260 million), the highest figure for the January-March period since records began, Fraser announced in its latest contribution to Yacht Style (Issue 65).

Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser, said: “Although the world is living through uncertain times, it’s positive to see that yacht sales and charters in the first quarter of this year were up on the same period a year ago.

“Although the total number of yachts sold is a little lower than it was in 2021 for the same period (158 in 2022 compared to 205 in 2021), the average asking price has jumped sharply – by almost €2 million per yacht.

Fraser also revealed that charter increased compared to 2021 as travel restrictions eased in popular charter locations. In Q1, Fraser’s own charter retail brokers signed 74% more charters than they did in Q1 of 2021 and charter management fleet bookings rocketed by 160%.

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has announced the new ICOMIA Asia Working Group (IAWG). A key aim for the new group is to ‘achieve traction on common issues relating to regional cooperation, such as border agreements and customs, immigration, and quarantine procedures (CIQP)’.

Previous efforts to unite national boating associations in the region include the Asia Boating Dialogue, which was last held in 2020 as a two-part webinar series and led by the Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA) and Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA), with the support of ICOMIA.

The mission of the IAWG includes providing international leadership and guidance on issues concerning the development of the leisure marine industry through discussion, research and networking.

Lawrence Chow, Chair of ICOMIA Asia Working Group, said: “The formation of the IAWG marks the strong potential of growth for the boating industry in Asia. ICOMIA Members will now have access to key insights and developments in Asia. In parallel, the IAWG would be an ideal platform to spread the experience gathered from the various ICOMIA committees to emerging markets in Asia, inspiring different markets to set up their own marine industry associations in the future.”

The IAWG is currently working on the following projects:

  • Promoting the International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) licences in Asia to boost the charter industry in the region.
  • Grow Boating – implementing the latest grow boating campaigns and strategies in Asia.
  • Promoting the Regulatory Reference Guide (RRG), which provides information on rules and regulations affecting the recreational marine industry around the globe.

Current IAWG members include HKBIA, SBIA, Japan Marine Industry Association, Hainan Marine Trade Exchange Service Centre (HNMTES), Korea International Boat Show, Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute in Sri Lanka, Taiwan Yacht Industry Association and Thai Yachting Business Association. All ICOMIA members with an interest in Asia are welcome to join.
