Ferretti Group will continue to use Rolls-Royce’s MTU yacht propulsion systems at least through to the end of 2027.

Ferretti Group is to continue to use Rolls-Royce MTU engines and propulsion systems to power its yachts, with the companies extending their framework agreement through 2027. Rolls-Royce’s MTU engines and propulsion systems are widely used by Ferretti Group, especially in its larger models.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “I am extremely happy to announce the renewal of the agreement with Rolls-Royce for MTU products and solutions. The five-year term is crucial, because it offers the guarantee that supplies are always available, and prices are sheltered from market swings. This agreement also further increases the efficiency of our supply chain, with clear benefits for us and our customers.”

Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: “Ferretti Group’s renewal of this framework agreement is a tremendous vote of confidence in us and in our MTU products, in a challenging market and a challenging technological environment.”

Ferretti Group said the internal combustion engine will be the power source of choice for applications – including yachts – that require maximum performance from a compact power pack, and will also have an important part to play during the move into sustainable boating. In 2024, a Ferretti Group yacht is scheduled to be built with an MTU hybrid propulsion system.

Moreover, by 2023, the MTU Series 2000 and 4000 yacht engines are scheduled to be approved to run on synthetic sustainable fuels complying with the EN15940 standard. These include fuels such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and e-diesel.

Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: “Working together, we will meet the climate and environmental challenges that lie ahead.”

From 2024, Ferretti will be equipping smaller yachts with complete MTU NautiQ bridge systems developed together with bridge specialist Team Italia, with whom Rolls-Royce has a close partnership.

ClubSwan 80 races at Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

SHARE

The newest Swan racing yacht is among a dozen or sailing models at the Monaco Yacht Show, having already competed in two regattas this month.

The ClubSwan 80 designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian makes its world premiere at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, alongside a Swan 98, after competing in two regattas earlier this month.

My Song, owned by Pier Luigi Loro Piana, competed in the 13-strong Maxi class at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo in early September. Fitted with a canting keel and a single tack-able lifting daggerboard, she won the last of the five races and eventually finished fifth in a class won by Lord Irvine Laidlaw’s Reichel/Pugh 82 Highland Fling XI.

In the subsequent Rolex Swan Cup, also in Porto Cervo, My Song finished third in the Maxi class behind the Swan 90 Freya and the Swan 80 Plis-Play.

Unlike most Swan models, which are built by Nautor in Finland, the ClubSwan 80 was built by Italian builder Persico Marine inland in Nembro, near Bergamo.

Persico Marine’s technology included the Coriolis robot used in the aerospace industry to laminate carbon. The construction method for the yacht was the same used for the carbon ‘arm’ on the current America’s Cup boats.

ClubSwan 80 has a 4.75m canting keel, twin rudders – as per the ClubSwan 36 – and a retractable bowsprit. While the keel is canted, the side-force appendages chosen by the My Song sailing team consist of a rotating canard for upwind performance in light air and tacking ability in tactical situations, common in Maxi fleet racing.

Marcello Persico, CEO of Persico Marine, said: This boat is built to the same standard we use for America’s Cup boats and IMOCA 60s engaged in the toughest ocean races such as The Ocean Race and Vendee Globe.”

My Song had a private launch at La Spezia on Italy’s west coast in late June, as the ClubSwan 80 joined a racing range including the ClubSwan 36, ClubSwan 50 and the ClubSwan 125, Skorpios.

Giovanni Pomati, CEO of Nautor Group, said: “This pure 80ft racer marks another important milestone for us. We have broadened our range to get closer to meeting every need and lifestyle choice of our customers. The market is always asking for something different out of the box, and our ClubSwan Yachts range can offer a fresh, bold and innovative solution, setting the bar high.

“The team of brilliant international minds working on this performance sailing yacht with the goal of building something unique has been quite special. The ClubSwan 80 is a pure racer but is also an incredible yacht for fast sailing, shorthanded sailing and comfortable sports cruising.”

Sanlorenzo’s 73Steel is due for delivery in 2026

Sanlorenzo’s Superyacht Division and Fraser have announced the sale of a Sanlorenzo 73Steel, which is the shipyard’s largest build to date and due for delivery in 2026. Bought by an existing Sanlorenzo yacht owner, the 73Steel is the ninth metal yacht sold by Sanlorenzo this year, increasing the fleet currently under construction to 23 superyachts from 44-73m.

Featuring exterior lines by Zuccon International Project, Sanlorenzo’s new 73m flagship will have a diesel-electric propulsion system aimed at minimising emissions and a “completely unconventional layout that will take the connection between interior and exterior and between man and nature to another level”, according to the shipyard.

Bernardo Zuccon said: “The design of the new 73Steel represents a fascinating new chapter in the yard’s history, not only because of its size, which is currently the largest ever built, but also because it is a testament to how strongly the company believes in the evolution and importance of a complex market such as the superyacht market.

“As designers, we’re proud to participate in this new adventure, basing our project research on the development of a design that, despite the large volumes available, is able to convey extreme dynamism, sportiness and contemporaneity.”

Sanlorenzo 62Steel

Sanlorenzo is participating at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show with a new 62Steel, Alchemist, and an Alloy, Sailing Grace, launched in 2021.

The 62Steel has a volume of 1,350GT and six decks including an upper deck dedicated to the exclusive use of the owner. The main deck starts with a large pool featuring a transparent floor.

The first 62Steel, Cloud 9, was premiered at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show (click to read Review). Four units have been sold to date, the third of which is scheduled for delivery in early 2023. The fourth unit has grown to a length of 64m and will be renamed 64Steel.

The Alloy has sold 10 units to date. Made entirely of aluminium, the 44.5m superyacht has a Bernardo Zuccon exterior. Special features include an owner’s cabin conceived as a private apartment of 147sqm and organised on three levels connected to each other, with an indoor and an outdoor area.

Simpson Marine represents Sanlorenzo and sister brand Bluegame in Asia.

MYS returns to Port Hercule

As reviewed in Yacht Style Issue 66, the 115m Ahpo by Germany’s Lürssen is the biggest vessel at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show from September 28-October 1, as the superyacht spectacle continues its three-year development programme ‘to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients’.

With no event in 2020, the 30th edition was held last year against the backdrop of slowly-easing restrictions for international travel, with the first post-pandemic edition attracting 19,000 visitors and 101 yachts to Port Hercule. It was a well-received return for the show, although figures were down on the 31,000 visitors and 125 yachts of 2019, then described as the biggest edition since the show started in 1991.

This year, organisers expect over 450 exhibitors and around 115 superyachts including about 40 new models. The show is again preceded by the Monaco Yacht Summit at Yacht Club de Monaco, where show visitors with a yacht project (purchase, charter or construction) receive advice and insights from industry experts including designers, brokers, builders and financial advisors.

The first day of the show is invitation-only, with private clients holding ‘Discover’ passes and their parties (‘Advise’ passes) granted access to the Dockside Area while other areas are open to all passes. From the Thursday to the Saturday, the Dockside Area is open to all visitors.

ADVENTURE AREA, SUSTAINABILITY HUB

This year, organisers have introduced an Adventure Area and a Sustainability Hub. Dedicated to adventure, exploration and leisure activities on board a superyacht, the Adventure Area spans two sites at Port Hercule.

Adventure Area

Quai Antoine 1er on the south side of Port Hercule includes an Adventure Area linked to the former Car Deck and Tenders & Toys exhibitions, bringing luxury cars and motorbikes, yacht tenders and water toys together in one location. The other Adventure Area features about 20 tenders moored at Quai Jarlan, as in previous editions.

The Sustainability Hub is for companies specialising in technology aimed at reducing superyachts’ environmental footprint and covers 200sqm in Darse Sud, the southern tent dedicated to equipment, technology and yachting services.

Other changes this year include an upgrade of the Dockside Area, the relocation of the Sailing Yacht Area to the protected inner side of Quai l’Hirondelle, and a doubling of the size of the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, which includes a new 100sqm conference area at Virage Louis Chiron. The three themed areas were introduced last year as part of the organisers’ three-year revamp.

This year’s Southampton International Boat Show featured 83,000 visitors over nine days, after the Monday of the scheduled 10-day event was closed as a mark of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The UK observed a national mourning period of 10 days and the Queen lay in state in Westminster Hall for six days, with the period overlapping the first few days of the Southampton show.

“Despite the sad circumstances of recent weeks, we are delighted to have welcomed so many people to the show. It’s apparent that there continues to be is a real appetite for all things marine and people looking to find different ways to get out on the water,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, the show organiser.

Set in Europe’s largest purpose-built show marina, this year’s edition featured a record number of exhibitors, boats and debuts. A total of 685 individual stands and berths covered the show’s 70,000sqm-plus footprint, with over 650 craft on display including 300 in the marina. The show hosted 167 UK and world debuts, while also welcoming 126 new companies.

“There has been a fabulous atmosphere at this year’s show and the feedback we’ve received from exhibitors from across the industry has been exceptional, with many indicating very strong sales,” Robinson said.

“The show has put a real smile on everyone’s face with a fantastic mix of products, talks, entertainment and refreshments, plus our stunning new VIP experience. We’ve welcomed everyone from boating newbies to seasoned sailors and watersports enthusiasts. The wide choice of sailing yachts, motorboats, accessories, paddle boards, kayaks and services has been incredibly well received.”

The new Quayside Club VIP experience was a new addition and proved a hot ticket for many visitors, with the exclusive waterfront lounge offering some of the best seats in the venue and delivering five-star hospitality.

“We have been delighted with how well the new VIP experience has been received at the show,” Robinson said. “The food, atmosphere and hosting staff has been exceptional, and we hope that in future years even more visitors will take advantage of it and add a real touch of luxury to their visit.”

British builders were again the dominant exhibitors, with Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline fielding impressive line-ups at Mayflower Park, having all participated at the Cannes Yachting Festival earlier in the month.

Sunseeker’s large display featured the UK debut of the Predator 65, which had its world premiere in March at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in the US. The nine-yacht line-up also included the 65 Sport Yacht, Manhattan 55 and Manhattan 68, while the Poole builder’s largest models on show were a Predator 74, Predator 74 XPS, 76 Yacht, 88 Yacht and 95 Yacht.

Southampton, Boat, Show, Mayflower Park, Queen, Elizabeth II, funeral, Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine, Quayside Club, VIP, Predator, Manhattan, Squadron

The Sunseeker family thrive when they are together as a team. Nowhere is this demonstrated more than at boat shows when we get to spend time with our valued clients,” Sunseeker stated.

“Our head-turning displays at both Southampton and Cannes have seen us achieve great success across the range. There’s great confidence in the industry and Sunseeker’s phenomenal range coupled with a strong product plan for the future is once again seeing us lead the way.”

Princess’s seven yachts in the water were headlined by the global debut of the F65 and the world premieres of the F55 and F50, all from the F Class series of flybridge yachts. The Plymouth builder’s other models include the V50 Deck (show debut) and V55 sports yachts, S66 sportbridge and the Y72 (show debut) from the larger Y Class flybridge motor yachts.

“We were thrilled to be back in force at the Southampton International Boat Show,” Princess stated. “This year’s show was back to normal, so it was fantastic to see visitors enjoying everything that makes this particular show so special.”

Southampton, Boat, Show, Mayflower Park, Queen, Elizabeth II, funeral, Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine, Quayside Club, VIP, Predator, Manhattan, Squadron

Fairline staged the Southampton debut of its newly upgraded flagship Squadron 68, soon after the model’s official world premiere at Cannes. The builder’s line-up at the show also included the F//Line 33, Targa 45 Open and GT models, Targa 50 Open and Squadron 50.

It’s great to see the show back to its pre-pandemic levels with large visitor numbers,”Sales for new and used boats both in the UK and Med are strong and we are very happy. Southampton is a really well run show and we’ve been very lucky with the weather. It’s a shame it’s all over so soon and we can’t wait for next year.”

Southampton, Boat, Show, Mayflower Park, Queen, Elizabeth II, funeral, Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine, Quayside Club, VIP, Predator, Manhattan, Squadron

As well as craft of all shapes and sizes from paddleboards and kayaks to superyachts, plus an array of products and services from engines and life rafts to clothing and rigging, the show again placed a real emphasis on giving people the opportunity to get out on the water.

Through the Get Afloat, Try-A-Boat and Try-A-Boat+ experiences, the show hosted over 14,000 visitors on the water, trying everything from dinghy sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking to RIB rides, yacht cruising and motorboating. Visitors were also able to get out aboard fascinating and historic craft like the 48m Morgenster tall ship, F8 landing craft, motor gun boat 81 and the High-Speed Launch (HSL) 102.

Southampton, Boat, Show, Mayflower Park, Queen, Elizabeth II, funeral, Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine, Quayside Club, VIP, Predator, Manhattan, Squadron

Robinson said: “I would like to offer my thanks to Rockley Waterports, Flexisail and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for making the on-the-water experiences such a huge success.”

The 2023 Southampton International Boat Show will be held from September 15-24, overlapping both next year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 12-17) in France and the Genoa International Boat Show (September 21-26).

Sunreef’s new Supreme 70 Eco

Sunreef Yachts, which recently appointed Hong Seh Marine as its dealer in Singapore (click to read article), has unveiled the first CGIs of the Supreme 70 Eco, the newest addition to its green line of solar-electric craft. The yacht’s dynamic, futuristic hull design includes vertical bows and forward-raked windscreen.

The model includes the same green tech as featured on other Eco models including large flat surfaces covered in the shipyard’s patented composite-integrated solar panels, delivering up to 30kWp. The solar power is used both for the appliances on board and the electric propulsion.

The 375 GTO extends the Grand Touring Outboards range

Galeon has revealed images of the new 375 GTO, which is set to make its American debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 26-30.

Designed by long-time Galeon partner Tony Castro, the 375 GTO is the big sister of the 325 GTO, which launched a new Grand Touring Outboards line when it was unveiled in Florida in early 2021 before the first hull in Asia arrived in Hong Kong late last year through regional dealer Asiamarine.

Engine options include twin 600hp Mercury Verado outboards

The 375 GTO was first shown publicly at this year’s Polboat Yachting Festival in the northern Polish city of Gdynia in July before the yacht had a more high-profile appearance at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

The yacht’s engine options include twin 600hp Mercury Verado outboards that power to the boat close to 50 knots. At rest, long fold-down sides both port and starboard create Galeon’s iconic ‘Beach Mode’ popularised by the 500 Fly.

The bow has an extensive seating area

Cockpit furniture includes an aft sofa with moveable backrest, a flexible table, a moveable forward L-shaped sofa, and a wet bar to port.

The hard top includes a two-part glass sunroof, both side windows can open, while a port side passageway leads to a U-shaped bow seating area for six that provides a fun place to sit while cruising or at anchor.

The drop-down sides create the ‘beach mode’

The lower deck includes a forward dinette that can convert into a double berth, a bathroom with separate shower stall to starboard and a low-ceilinged midships cabin with twin beds.

Bob Burke, Galeon Brand Manager of the Americas, said: “The 375 GTO is another game-changing and best-in-class model from Galeon. She is rich with features and innovation that set her apart from the field. Galeon continues to remind us why they are industry leaders each time a new model is launched and the 375 GTO is no exception.

Princess has revealed details of the all-new Y80, which is scheduled to debut at the autumn boat shows in 2023. The model will be the third-largest in the Y Class of large flybridge motor yachts, which also includes the Y72, Y85 and the upcoming Y95.

The continuous hull window line follows other Y Class models

The Y80’s exterior styling follows the new direction of the Y Class design language with a continuous hull window line graphic and elegant hard top. The yacht is fitted with twin 1,900hp MAN V12 engines that are expected to produce a top speed over 30 knots.

Cockpit options include a glass balustrade

Three cockpit designs include a traditional C-shaped sofa with additional storage solution for two Seabobs. Options with a large glass balustrade aft comprise either a central cockpit table with freestanding furniture to seat eight guests or the builder’s new ‘infinity cockpit’ layout, first seen on the new Y85, with electrically sliding seating and table mechanism to transform the area from a relaxed sofa arrangement to an informal dining area.

The Ocean 182 will show at Cannes and Fort Lauderdale in 2023

Sunseeker is scheduled to stage the world premiere of the Ocean 182 at next year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17, with the US premiere of the model following at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The Ocean 182 refers to the yacht’s GT and is the new name for the enclosed version of the 90 Ocean, which launched last year and introduced a new wide-beam, high-volume offering. The 90 Ocean and Ocean 182 have an overall length of 88ft 11in and a beam of 23ft 6in, making them wider than Sunseeker’s 95 Yacht and 100 Yacht, and just 6in slimmer than the 116 Yacht.

The Ocean 182 shares the same hull as the 90 Ocean

The 90 Ocean and Ocean 182 now form part of a new Ocean series at Sunseeker that also includes the newly designed Ocean 156 (80ft) – a project announced at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival – as well as the Ocean 42M (138ft) and Ocean 50M (159ft). The Ocean collection is now separate to the Yacht (76 Yacht, 88 Yacht, 95 Yacht, 100 Yacht) and Superyacht (116 Yacht, 131 Yacht) series.

The main difference between the 90 Ocean and Ocean 182 is the enclosed flybridge, which contains the yacht’s sole helm station. The superstructure is dominated by glazing and offers panoramic views from the helm station, while a tilting vain sunroof allows more natural light and ventilation.

Furniture options in the interior include a dining table with sideboards to port and starboard, or two sofas, as well as an integrated bar with three stools. Aft is an open-air area with freestanding furniture.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, said: “We are delighted to bring yet another new model to market. The Ocean 182 combines the beauty of elegant Sunseeker design and craftsmanship with practicality and liveability for owners.

“We have considered in meticulous detail this very special configuration, how it will be used and the exquisite materials required to elevate every single space. The scale of this yacht is frankly beyond compare, from an expansive open-plan main deck ideal for socialising to its fully-featured flybridge, this is one remarkable yacht.”

The saloon is offered in multiple layouts

With just one helm station on the flybridge, the space and options on the main deck increase, with an open-plan saloon offering multiple seating arrangements. The galley is forward to port and features Miele appliances plus the option of a wine cooler, while the spacious dining area can feature a large dining table for up to eight guests. Another notable difference is aft of the galley, where a stainless steel and timber staircase leads up to the enclosed flybridge.

The lower deck is based on the 90 Ocean, so the main stairs lead to a hallway leading to a double and twin guest cabins aft and the full-beam owner’s suite forward. The VIP suite is in the bow and is accessed by private stairs forward of the dining area.

As on the 90 Ocean, the yacht features an enormous 24sqm beach club measuring 6m by 4m, complete with a double X-TEND™ sunbed system, which can fold down to be an aft-facing sofa or raised to main-deck level to significantly expand the cockpit area.

The raised garage door contains a rain shower, while inside is ample space for water toys, racking for towels or diving equipment. Two dedicated Seabob lockers are set into the floor, while a tender and/or jetskis can be stowed on the hydraulic platform. The Ocean 182 has the option of twin 1,650hp or 1,900hp MAN V12 engines, reaching 27 knots with the latter and a range of 1,800nm at a displacement speed of 12 knots. www.sunseeker.com

Silent is developing the Speed 28, which is expected to top 60 knots, leading the Austrian-owned company to say the 8.6m carbon-fibre RIB will “rocket straight to the top of the list of the fastest electric production boats” when launched later this year. Featuring flexible seating for up to 10 people, the Speed 28 has been earmarked as a superyacht tender or ‘a fun boat that can be easily trailered’.

The Speed 28 is planned to be the first in a line of performance boats from Silent in partnership with eD-TEC, which is headed by Michael Jost, a member of the Silent Advisory Board. The founder and CEO of eD-TEC, Jost is the former Head of Group Strategy Product and Chief Strategy Officer of Volkswagen Group, and oversaw the company’s expansive electrification plan.

The Speed 28 is fitted with twin 100kW eD-QDrive electric motors, which are expected to give the RIB a top speed of 60-plus knots for short bursts and a range of 70 miles at a cruising speed of 30 knots while operating in virtual silence. The boat features embedded solar cells on the hardtop that generate up to 704W of power, while its lithium-ion batteries (LiFePO4) store around 100kWh of energy.

Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent Group, said: “With 18 years of experience in designing and building solar-powered catamarans, we were hungry to push the boundaries again. Our know-how combined with Michael Jost and his team, coupled with continuing technological advances, have made it possible to develop a model line that combines spectacular performance with impressive range.”

The Speed 28 marks the start of a strategic partnership between the Silent Group and eD-TEC, which the companies say is a ‘technological alliance that will take electric mobility on the water to a new level’.

The boat’s systems and components are interlinked to the AI Box via CAN bus, which tunes the vessel and increases performance and range, making constant adjustments to reduce roll and pitch. The vessel is controlled through a specially designed eD-Platform user interface, which puts key information and functions at the operator’s fingertips.

The eD-TEC drivetrain includes three foils: a fixed one forward that links the two narrow hulls, and two moveable aft foils that point inwards from hull insides. A broad, blunt bow above the waterline provides buoyancy and disperses spray, while a rigid hardtop sits atop narrow pillars framing the windscreen and a Y-shaped support aft.

The onboard charger can handle 150kW DC, which fully recharges the battery in around 40 minutes, while AC charging is possible at up to 22kW. From a Silent yacht, the battery of the Speed 28 can be recharged with the 22.5kW DC wallbox from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in two hours. A standard three-phase charger could do the same job in about four hours, according to Silent, although port infrastructure varies.
