Sanlorenzo Asia presented the Collectors Lounge at the 10th edition of West Bund Art & Design, a four-day event held at the West Bund Art and Exhibition Centre as part of the Shanghai Art Week.

A first-time participant, Sanlorenzo Asia collaborated with long-term partner Wei Gallery to present the triptych artwork ‘Deep Blue Love’ by artist Alixe Fu. The display booth utilised the brand’s minimalist design, with the ocean artwork flanked by two LED walls.

Sanlorenzo, Asia, yacht, builder, West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai Art Week, Wei Gallery, Alixe Fu, Deep Blue Love

Created with the concept of “embracing the sea and thinking like a whale”, the French-Chinese artist’s latest piece is made of oil painting on canvas and multiple materials, and depicts the issue of looking after the planet and its ecosystem.

Fu frequently integrates the concept of environmental protection and public welfare into his personal creations. With ‘Deep Blue Love’, he expresses his concern for plastic pollution and calls for the reduction of waste and protection of the earth.

Sustainability and ocean protection is a component of Sanlorenzo’s Road to 2030 strategy, which focuses on clean energies and sustainability.

Born in 1961 in Yunlin, Taiwan, Fu currently lives between Taiwan, Paris and Beijing. His experience of living in France for many years has allowed him to embrace Western art movements such as Cubism and Surrealism while maintaining his experience of traditional Chinese art.

Working on oil paintings, colour ink, sculptures and public art, he has travelled to Paris, New York, Tokyo and elsewhere around the world for exhibitions. His works have been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and other institutions in Europe, America, and Asia.

Sanlorenzo’s presence at West Bund Art & Design is part of the brand’s long-term commitment to art, which includes being the global yachting partner of Art Basel. The shipyard also created Sanlorenzo Arts, a collection of interactive works and projects covering sustainability, environment, technology, nature, sea and humanity.

Sanlorenzo has launched Virtuosity, the second unit the Italian builder’s 57Steel, a model that had its world premiere at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show in late September. A 56.7m superyacht with a volume of 1,021GT, Virtuosity features an exterior by Zuccon International Project and an interior by Piero Lissoni, assisted by the Sanlorenzo SY Style Centre.

The beach area can be enlarged to 150sqm when the side and aft platforms unfold, while features include a gym, customised hammam, sauna and wet bar.

Saloon on main deck

The main deck starts aft with a custom glass-bottomed pool, while the sunbathing area leads into the main saloon through a cocktail transition area. The saloon has resin flooring, full-height windows and a double-sided sofa at its centre: on one side living space, on the other a living area that can be converted into dining.

The lobby features a sculptural, imposing central staircase that connects all the decks, while the ceiling above the staircase is made of transparent glass. Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, chose the interior furnishings, which are characterised by neutral tones and natural materials. The main deck has a full-beam cabin forward.

Owner’s suite on upper deck

On the upper deck, dedicated to the owner, the open aft area has sun loungers and a dining area with a bespoke table by Lissoni featuring a marble top and sculptural carbon-fibre base. A customised, curved sliding door leads into the upped-deck saloon, which also has full-height windows, while the full-beam owner’s suite benefits from a private swimming pool in the bow.

On the bridge deck, the outdoor area offers living and dining areas, while the interior can function as a DJ area, with a table concealing the music equipment, or an intimate space for conversation. The lower deck has two VIP cabins and two guest cabins with single beds that can be converted into doubles.

Dubai Harbour will host the Dubai International Boat Show for a third successive year as the Middle East’s biggest yacht show returns for its 30th edition from February 28-March 3, 2024.

The 2023 edition in early March attracted more than 28,000 visitors, 1,000 brands and companies, and featured over 200 boats including 44 global and regional debuts according to the show’s long-term organiser, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

UAE builder Gulf Craft is traditionally the leading exhibitor at the show and last year debuted several models including the Majesty 111 among its 15 boats in the water. Other brands on show with local dealers included Riva, Pershing and Ferretti Yachts of Ferretti Group, Azimut, Sanlorenzo, Princess, Sunseeker, Sunreef, Riviera, Lagoon, Beneteau, Jeanneau, De Antonio and Say Carbon Yachts.

The 68m Soaring built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen was the show’s largest yacht and was exhibited by Ocean Independence, which also displayed the 37m Tecnomar Evo 120 Viktoriia with The Italian Sea Group. Other superyachts included the 47m Heesen Anita shown by Behnemar and the 32m Baglietto Lady Maia exhibited by BlackOrange.

The Middle East’s boating market has risen post-Covid, with many major builders reporting increased sales and appointing new dealers. Over the past year, Camper & Nicholsons and IYC are among superyacht brokerage houses to open a regional office in the UAE, while Sunreef Yachts has opened both an office in Dubai and a new production facility in Ras Al Khaimah.

The maritime sector accounts for seven per cent of Dubai’s GDP, while the MENA region has the second-highest fleet to billionaire ratio, DWTC states. In addition, the Middle East has experienced a 16.9 per cent surge in ultra-wealthy individuals and the UAE is the top destination for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).

Olympic swimmers Siobhan Haughey and Jasmine Alkhaldi were among 30 people participating in the multi-relay swim around Hong Kong Island. The line-up also included participants who spent months training and overcoming their swim illiteracy, a commitment that went beyond the physical endurance required for the swim.

ONE°15 has announced that it has set aside S$250,000 in conservation funding to support a range of initiatives with local universities including Singapore Management University (SMU). The announcement was made in the wake of the second Blue Water EduFest at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

The marine conservation funding initiative encompasses a three-year marine sustainability scholarship programme for low-income students; a five-year conservation project to develop coral and marine biodiversity at ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island off Batam; and seed funding for early career researchers in marine science over three years.

ONE°15 also pledged to support ‘The Young Sustainability Champion Programme’, a nationwide youth design challenge in partnership with the Science Centre Singapore. This initiative will involve mentoring selected secondary school students as they work on solutions to address marine-related challenges.

The marine e-mobility leader has launched its next generation of electric outboard motors including the 1,600W direct-drive Travel XP.

Torqeedo, Travel, motors, new, METSTRADE, Amsterdam, Adventure, Essential, Range, Power, Package, battery, Fabian Bez, Thomas Wiedemann, Sven Mostögl

Torqeedo has debuted its all-new Travel family of clean boating products and accessories at Metstrade in Amsterdam, with the products available from early 2024. Founded in 2005, Torqeedo has delivered more than 100,000 Travel motors, which make up about 40 per cent of the company’s total production of 250,000 drive systems to date.

The new modular Travel design is available in four packages: Adventure, Essential, Range and Power. The Adventure Package pairs a 1,100W outboard and a 1,080Wh battery with an innovative mounting and steering system that gets kayak anglers quickly and stealthily to their secret spots.

The Essential Package is the original Travel redefined, pairing a 1,100W outboard motor with a 1,080Wh battery. The Range Package includes a higher-capacity battery (1,425Wh) for greater distance, while the Power Package has a heavy-duty 1,600W direct-drive motor and 1,425Wh battery, making it suitable for bigger boats or more challenging water conditions.

Once the package is selected, a multitude of charging, propeller, and accessory options allow boaters to build their ideal electric Travel companion.

Fabian Bez, CEO of Torqeedo, said: “The new Travel family marks the opening of a new chapter of Torqeedo products. The original Travel was Torqeedo’s first product and the one that disrupted an industry. A true icon which now has been redefined.

“The new lineup serves an even broader range of boating applications, adds many user-centric features and allows boaters to fully customise their Travel experience to meet their individual needs. The customers’ demands are at the very core of our product development, resulting in the Travel XP. Our latest product with up to 1600W input power clearly closes a gap in the market.”

Torqeedo, Travel, motors, new, METSTRADE, Amsterdam, Adventure, Essential, Range, Power, Package, battery, Fabian Bez, Thomas Wiedemann, Sven Mostögl

The included 180W charger cuts charge times in half, while a backlit, full-colour display makes it easier to read Torqeedo’s intuitive user interface with onboard GPS-calculated real-time range and runtime.

With variable speed and steering controls, the new tiller eases docking and launching with its precise, foldable and customisable design. Owners can change the direction of forward and reverse, increase or decrease friction, and even use while standing.

Thomas Wiedemann, Senior Vice President Global Program Management, added: “These innovative outboards are designed to be ultra-easy to use, transport and stow, and the click-and-play battery means no more cables to connect. Once the battery is removed with a click and the tiller is folded, the compact and lightweight motor is easy to hand up and down to the dinghy, fits easily in a lazarette, and won’t leak fuel and oil while stored.”

Torqeedo, Travel, motors, new, METSTRADE, Amsterdam, Adventure, Essential, Range, Power, Package, battery, Fabian Bez, Thomas Wiedemann, Sven Mostögl

TorqLink, Torqeedo’s advanced communications protocol, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are built in so owners can connect with Torqeedo’s new smartphone app, TorqView. The app enables a host of new features including maps, trip logs and over-the-air updates.

Motor updates can be performed anywhere there’s an internet connection, meaning the Travel is always up-to-date, safe, reliable and efficient. Torqeedo owners can also opt-in to allow Torqeedo and its authorised service centres to collect system information to provide the fastest and most efficient service and maintenance experience possible.

For boats with a rudder or steering wheel, the Power Package’s Travel XP can be ordered as a remote model with everything you need to connect to standard Teleflex steering, and an optional remote kit is also available to convert a tiller-steered Travel.

Torqeedo, Travel, motors, new, METSTRADE, Amsterdam, Adventure, Essential, Range, Power, Package, battery, Fabian Bez, Thomas Wiedemann, Sven Mostögl

The new, 90-degree tilt-equipped transom mount design lets you raise the motor completely out of the water, and the practical new three-stage rotation control lever lets you quickly choose between fixed steering, +/- 60-degree steering, and 360-degree, fully rotatable steering.

Sven Mostögl, Senior Vice President Branded Retail, said: “The entire user experience, down to the new connected features and the smartphone app, leverages Torqeedo’s 18 years of experience in building the world’s best electric drive systems and brings it to a new generation of boaters who demand greener, cleaner and more thoughtfully designed products.

“This launch is the start of a new chapter for Torqeedo. Not only are we significantly reshaping and sharpening the product portfolio and brand appearance but we’ve also made the next decisive step in building the future of electric boating.”

With yacht sales continuing to outperform pre-Covid norms, yachting has its eye on one sector for a glimpse of the future.

In a Column for YACHT STYLE Issue 74, Fraser says the lively charter market could eventually convert into strong sales of superyachts.

Mark Duncan, Fraser’s Director of Marketing & Business Development, wrote: “The charter market is a wonderful measure of the demand for luxury yachting. While it has slipped since the record-breaking post-Covid years of 2021 and 2022, our teams witnessed an impressive late surge this summer with charter bookings up in June and up by over 25 per cent in July, noticeably on yachts above 60m. August and September bookings were slightly lower than in peak years.”

Fraser also stated that its recent acquisition of Atalanta Golden Yachts (AGY) in Greece means clients now have access to the world’s largest charter fleet – over 140 yachts with charter programmes across every size range.

“Statistically more than 30 per cent of charterers eventually go on to become yacht owners,” Duncan wrote. “With worldwide sales continuing to outperform pre-Covid averages by over 28 per cent, we look forward to seeing the demand for our newly increased charter fleet eventually translate into increased purchase demand in the not-too-distant future.”

Camper & Nicholsons has announced the appointment of Windie Tsoi as a Sales Advisor, based in Hong Kong. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tsoi worked for four years at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group before spending almost five years with Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht dealer, initially as a Sales Assistant for Sanlorenzo Asia-Pacific before becoming a Yacht Broker.

In the past year, she spent time in the UAE before returning to Hong Kong, where she will work alongside Julien Solari, Camper & Nicholsons’ Asia Chief Commercial Officer, and the local team.

“Windie is a successful sales broker and had sold many boats including several new Sanlorenzo models in Hong Kong,” Solari said. “Young, dynamic, and driven, Windie is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and has a good understanding of Arabic thanks to her recent experience in Dubai. Windie is a great addition to our team and is already working on some deals and listings.”

Supported by Camper & Nicholsons’ global network, Tsoi will be able to assist clients with charter, purchase and commissioning of new build yachts, as well as introduce them to the company’s wider services in yacht and crew management.
