Although Brady, Rafa Nadal, Virat Kohli and Sergio Perez weren’t present in Jeddah, the event did attract four of the eight celebrity team owners. Singer Marc Anthony (Team Miami), football icon Didier Drogba (Team Drogba), DJ Steve Aoki (Aoki Racing Team) and tech entrepreneur Marcelo Claure (Team Brazil) were all present to support their teams in the groundbreaking event.

The eight teams battled it out under the Jeddah sunshine in high-octane racing, with speeds of over 50 knots (92kph/57mph) captivating fans. In qualifying on the opening day, Team Miami came out on top after Stark completed the course in 6 minutes 23.33 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of Team Rafa.

Team Karakoa, skippered by Ray Ordoveza, emerged as the overall winner in the IRC Racing Class at the eighth BPI Busuanga Cup, which doubled as the exhilarating second leg of the 2023-2024 BPI Private Wealth Signature Yacht Race Series.

Team Karakoa won the BPI Busuanga Cup Doni Altura Perpetual Trophy and clinched line honours in the Punta Fuego to Busuanga Race, with a record elapsed time of 16 hours 2 minutes and 2 seconds.

A 135nm overnight race that ended in Black Island, the Punta Fuego to Busuanga Race presented gruelling conditions, with 40 knots of true wind speed gusting to a high of 52 knots and wave heights of almost 3m along the Calavite Passage.

BPI has been a long-standing partner of the BPI Busuanga Cup. The regatta started in 2017 with three participating boats with the vision of reintroducing sailing to Filipinos, recalled Maria Theresa Marcial, President and CEO of BPI Wealth.

“BPI proudly continues its steadfast support of the BPI Busuanga Cup, a legacy that takes an extraordinary turn this year as we unite it under the banner of the BPI Private Wealth Signature Yacht Race Series,” Marcial said.

“When we launched the BPI Private Wealth Signature Experience last year, we promised to take innovative strides and breathe new life in the way we do banking by being more relevant in the lives of our clients. This event marks a celebration of rebirths, as we breathe new life into private banking and reignite the sailing spirit in the Philippines, positioning our nation as the coveted sailing mecca in Asia.”

Over the years, the BPI Busuanga Cup has grown into a much-awaited event in the sailing calendar, with 14 yachts participating in the racing and spectator fleet this year.

Ordoveza said: “I can now see that this regatta will be equal to the international regattas in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. I’m sure that this will be very well known around the region. Thank you for elevating sailing in the Philippines.”

The four-day race was designed to test the skill, agility, determination and team work of the participating yachts with the Punta Fuego to Busuanga offshore race and the Doni Altura Memorial Inshore Races around the picturesque landscape of Busuanga, north of Palawan.

Overall winners were determined by a scoring system that combined the results of the offshore race and inshore races based on corrected time. The Cruising Class saw Papaya, skippered by Renie Ticzon, emerge on top, with Isabelle securing second place, and Despacito skippered by Pablo Lobregat taking third place.

In the Ocean Multihull category, Cariño claimed the top spot overall, followed by Poco Loco skippered by David Sutton in second place, and Tutu Tango skippered by Roman Azanza in third.

The BPI Busuanga Cup showcased outstanding talent and sportsmanship, with participants demonstrating exceptional prowess in their respective categories. The event proved to be a testament to the spirit of competition and camaraderie within the sailing community.

Camper & Nicholsons is collaborating with Neom’s Sindalah island, which is scheduled to open in March and be the first of the mega-project’s regions to begin operations. Sindalah’s marina will feature 86 berths and 75 moorings, according to the developer.

Situated in northwest Saudi Arabia, Sindalah is located by the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba and close to the entrance of the Gulf of Suez, with Neom promoting the island as a “captivating winter retreat” due to its proximity to the Suez Canal.

The Red Sea is home to pristine waters, colourful coral and diverse marine life, while the opening of Sindalah and other Red Sea destinations along with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to enhance yachting regulations, including the establishment of the Ebhar platform for crews, are expected to increase superyachts visiting the region.

Aayush Killa, Neom’s Executive Director, said: “We are delighted to partner with Camper & Nicholsons for Sindalah. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our vision at Neom, combining luxury with a profound respect for the pristine environment of the Red Sea.

“Camper & Nicholsons, with their unparalleled expertise in the luxury yachting sector, brings an exceptional understanding of our clientele’s desires. Their commitment to excellence and sustainability resonates deeply with Neom’s core values, making them the ideal partner to help us realise our aspiration of transforming Sindalah into a world-class yachting destination.”

Featuring 12 offices across the yachting world, Camper & Nicholsons is a global leader in superyacht sales, purchase, new builds, construction, project management, charter, marketing, crew services, yacht management and insurance.

According to a statement from Camper & Nicholsons, the company will “lend its refined yachting expertise to Sindalah … bringing its refined expertise and providing its full suite of yachting services to the island”.

Paolo Casani, CEO of Camper & Nicholsons, said: “Sindalah is more than a destination; it’s an invitation to explore the untouched wonders of the Red Sea. The synergy between Camper & Nicholsons and Neom has given rise to a yachting haven that perfectly encapsulates luxury amid the breathtaking beauty of this unexplored frontier. Sindalah beckons those who seek a sublime yachting experience like never before.”

Aside from Sindalah, Neom’s regions include The Line (a 170km-long city), Oxagon (floating port city), Trojena (60sqm ski and adventure mountain resort) and Gulf of Aqaba. The latter includes Leyja (valley hotels), Epicon (futuristic hotels, residences, beach resort), Siranna (seaside resort and apartments), Utamo (entertainment venue), Norlana (waterfront community), Aquellum (subterranean digitalised community) and Zardun (nature and wildlife sanctuary).

Released after her two big sisters, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 is the most innovative of the trio, with an aft deck offering revolutionary lounging space and a cockpit featuring a flexible dinette and separate stairways to each of the three guest cabins. The Jeanneau Yachts 55 joins the new 60 and 65

What’s in a name? In the case of the new Jeanneau Yachts 55, there’s a double number that seems to speak of this monohull’s dexterous adoption of some of the best multihull characteristics. Look once and you’ll see a monohull, but look twice – especially from aft or above – and you may sometimes wonder if you’re not aboard a catamaran.

For its new sailing yacht, Jeanneau turned to Philippe Briand for the hull and Andrew Winch for the interiors. Star designers like these could only produce a top result and they continued the winning combination that previously turned out the Jeanneau Yachts 60 and flagship 65. Like those models, the 55 is built for sailors who intend to do some long-distance offshore cruising in comfort and style.

The JY55 offers catamaran-like social space aft

Built to last, the 55 has a vacuum-infused GRP hull with an LOA of almost 17m and a beam just under 5m. The keel draught is 2.45m and the yacht’s twin rudders have self-aligning roller bearings. This serious sailing setup is easy to manage short-handed, with an in-mast furling mainsail and a furling jib with self-tacking jib track offered as standard.

From here, the array of options owners can choose is almost dizzying, making the 55 a yacht that can be fine-tuned to meet an array of sailing skill and lifestyle needs.

CAT-LIKE SOCIAL SPACE

Quality of onboard lifestyle was a driver for this monohull, which includes many easy-living features that are typically only found aboard catamarans. The aft-deck layout, for example, is all about lounging.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

The aft deck has L-shaped seating to port and a U-shaped sofa to starboard

You might think you’re seeing double when you board and find a U-shaped seating arrangement starboard, opposite an L-shaped sofa to port. Both arrangements can do double duty by converting from seating around tables to becoming large sunpads where guests can lounge, undisturbed by the presence of winches and other sailing gear.

Note also that the flooring is all on one level, so you have a space dedicated to enjoyment that spans almost a quarter of the yacht’s length.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

Each side has a table that can be lowered and covered with cushions

The transom opens out to become a large swim platform that offers more than just easy access to the water. It’s also the base for an outdoor kitchen when a grill is mounted onto the starboard side. While hovering just inches above the water, preparing meals in a setting like this offers those ‘what-more could-you-ask-for’ moments that go to making a vacation truly memorable.

Although there’s no tender garage, a 2.9m tender can be stored and launched from telescopic davits, much like those found aboard catamarans. And should there be a tender stored aft, one of the side benches lifts to allow guests to disembark comfortably while leaving the tender safely stowed.

COMFORT AND PROTECTION

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

The Jeanneau Yachts 55 is set up for short-handed sailing

While the aft area seems to be inching up on a catamaran lifestyle, forward of the large lounging areas are the twin helming positions, with wheels mounted onto pedestals that contain the beating heart of the yacht’s sailing soul.

Sure, it’s easy sailing with Raymarine touchscreen commands, joystick controls for bow and aft thrusters, electric winches and all lines close at hand, but it’s serious sailing nonetheless and it’s good fun.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

There’s a navigation station with GPS screen to port

Sailors can easily keep an eye on the headsails and quickly walk along the clean side decks, which stay on a single level that slowly ramps up towards the headsails and the fixed bowsprit. In the fore section is anchoring equipment and even an en-suite skipper’s cabin.

The mainsheet traveller is mounted directly onto an arched roll bar that delineates the protected cockpit. The windscreen is in curved glass with an opening central section, so views are always free and clear.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

Aft view of the covered cockpit, with a dinette to starboard

Depending on the climate they’re planning to sail in, owners can opt to mount a hard top dodger or a fold-away bimini. Aft of the roll bar, owners can even mount protection for the helming positions so they can sail whatever the latitude or weather conditions.

Inside the cockpit is a navigation station with a chart table, GPS screen and autopilot controls to port, while a sheltered dining table to starboard makes this an indoor/outdoor zone that doubles as a work/play area.

A sliding companionway door leads below deck

Everything is as protected from the elements as owners choose to make it, and all equipment is easy to access and close at hand. A couple of experienced sailors could easily sail this boat on their own, exploring the world in total freedom.

LIGHT DOWN BELOW

This living-free feeling is reinforced by the layout of the saloon below deck. Three layers of light pour in through hull and coachroof windows and flush hatch skylights to make the whole area bright and offer excellent natural air circulation.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

Forward view of the saloon, with two-table dinette to port and galley to starboard

A well-equipped galley, a dinette with L-shaped seating and tables that adjust in height to become an extra berth are similar to what you’d expect to find on a sailing yacht this size.

However, what is surprising is that the area can be used as a single open space together with the full-beam owner’s cabin fore by leaving the two sliding doors open. This creates a kind of ‘loft living’ vibe where divisions between day and night areas are blurred to create a single large space that’s perfect for a couple sailing on their own.

Jeanneau, 55, Yachts, Philippe Briand, Andrew Winch, monohull, multihull, catamaran

Sliding doors lead to the master suite forward

While it’s spacious and airy, it’s also seaworthy and practical, with plenty of well-placed handrails, pointing to the designers’ will to keep the boat and its occupants safe, even in rougher conditions.

While the Jeanneau Yachts 55 pampers its owners with the luxury of space and privacy, let’s not forget that this is a 17m boat, so it’s probable that guests will be part of the picture at some point. No problem.

Gullwing doors lead to the two guest cabins

Nobody’s privacy will be disturbed because of a truly innovative setup, which is so well-conceived that you might not even notice it at first. Just fore of the helms are twin gullwing glass doors that open to reveal symmetrical companionways leading down to the two guest cabins. The setup and feeling are much like you get on a catamaran, entering a separate hull.

This ingenious solution gives guests total privacy, keeping their sleeping areas separate both from the owners and the other guests. Both double cabins have their own en-suite bathrooms, so this again echoes the kind of privacy found aboard a catamaran.

The outdoor grill can be accessed when the swim platform is lowered

So, can a sailing yacht adopt some of the best lifestyle features of a catamaran and stay true to its calling? From sales numbers, it appears that the Jeanneau Yachts 55 can.

With its combination of sailing performance and catamaran comforts, this may well be the yacht that wins back monohull sailors who had drifted over into the ease and stability of catamarans. It may also appeal to motor yachters looking for a more sustainable, ecofriendly way to enjoy their time on the water.

The innovative design has led to impressive sales figures

Because aboard a sailing yacht where you’re free as a bird to choose your location, location, location, it’s the many ways the Jeanneau Yachts 55 allows you to enjoy your life aboard that makes all the difference.

Sophi Horne

How did you become involved with designing the Racebird for the E1 World Championship, the latest electric-vehicle racing series created by Alejandro Agag following Formula E and Extreme E?

I’ve been in the industry for over a decade. One of my early design jobs was with a superyacht charter and management company. At first, I was involved in the interiors of the yachts for refits. However, my boss saw some exterior sketches I did during my free time and said he saw a future for me in this direction, although I never believed I would design for myself one day. He introduced me to naval architects that invited me to tender for yacht designs, which was a good introduction.

I then continued my education and studied in Norway. Oslo is known as the capital of electric vehicles, so I saw the transition to electric cars and the move to electric in the marine industry. At the same time, Uber and the sharing platforms started. Blending all this together, I had the idea of trying to make boats more available and to produce an electric boat, so I started Seabird Technologies.

With a single Mercury Racing E1-X electric outboard, the 23ft Racebird has a 150kW peak output plus 35kWh battery capacity

I was a little slow to buy my own electric car because the designs were generally very ‘cute’ and bubble-like. For me, when you buy clothes or a car, you want them to represent your image, so I was looking for something more sleek and sexy.

I then saw Formula E’s Gen2 electric cars (introduced in the 2018-19 season) and loved them. They were kind of my design inspiration and I wanted to find someone else who had the same vision. The Gen2 designs were very cool and the events and how they were presented were very aligned to what I was looking for.

Formula E’s Gen2 cars inspired Horne’s Racebird design

To produce my boat, I started with a sharing platform and tried to find a partner who already built boats. I also researched the batteries, to look at adapting the technology from electric racing cars to the marine world and create a new product.

I went to a Formula E race and met Alejandro Agag, the king of electric motorsports. I presented my idea for a 7m electric leisure boat, not for racing. I had been developing it for a year and had a full business plan.

It was more for me to have a talk with him, so that maybe he could make introductions. A month later, he called me back and wanted me to do a more detailed presentation, then he became my first investor. I never believed he would become so involved.

How did your initial electric boat design evolve into the Racebird we see today?

I had moved to London and was fully focused on the private boats. However, I was sharing the same offices as Formula E, so I was surrounded by racing people. During Covid, Alejandro took a walk with Rodi Basso (CTO of Seabird Technologies from September 2020-August 2022, now CEO of E1).

Seabird model launch at Yacht Club de Monaco in 2021

Things had slowed down, so I think they were a little bored and they came up with this beautiful idea of the E1 World Championship, introducing electric racing to the water.

The idea overlapped with the start of Extreme E, offroad racing in electric SUVs, which started in 2021. I think they were in this creative bubble and seeing what they could do with electric racing. By then, they knew the technologies and had the supplier networks, having earlier set up the Formula E road racing series.

Horne toasts with Prince Albert of Monaco

After they conceived E1, they asked me to change focus for a year to design a raceboat. The brief was ‘make something cool’. That was it. Two months later, we were in Monaco with a 3D render. It all happened very fast, but it was done to showcase the vision.

We essentially sportified the leisure boat concept I was working on, with the foiling system and everything, and it seemed to work. The first project was ‘Frankenstein’, where we used an existing hull and fitted the foils to test them. Then we did a prototype.

A Racebird at the E1 test event in Rotterdam last September

The current boats are being built in Italy and the first four hulls were used for the E1 preview test event in Rotterdam in September 2023. I was quite nervous, but they all worked. It has all happened so fast. We’re not allowed to go over 50 knots, although they can be set up to go faster and we’ve reached 60.

Have the teams got room to adapt the boats, like with cars in Formula One, or is it strictly one-design?

For the first season, it comes in one package. Having seen F1 and the difference in budgets of the teams, we want a more even playing field to see who the best driver is.

Extreme E started in 2021 with Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button among team owners, and Sebastian Loeb among the drivers. However, E1 has gone to the next level in terms of celebrity team owners with Tom Brady, Rafa Nadal, Virat Kohli, Didier Drogba, Sergio Perez, Steve Aoki, Marc Anthony and Marcelo Claure. Do you think the timing now is right to support e-mobility?

It’s a lot about timing but also the network that Alejandro has developed in Formula E and Extreme E. People are looking for greener solutions and projects. However, I’ve been blown away by the support and we were all a little bit shocked. I never dared to think stars like this would join E1.

Horne with Tom Brady

However, as an example, when you talk to Tom Brady, it’s interesting to hear that he’s very passionate and has a relationship with the water. It’s something very dear to him because he’s spent a lot of time on the water and has so many memories from taking his kids to sea, so it’s a heartfelt project. The owners have taken their time to consider E1 and they want to be a part of it.

The 2024 series opens in Jeddah. Are you excited about working in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, which has such a strong history in powerboat racing?

Absolutely and this is also connected to timing, with the Red Sea development and the Gulf region’s focus on developing sustainable technology for all its new projects and infrastructure. At Seabird, we also see a big market for our upcoming products in the many luxury resorts.

Racebirds being trialled in Jeddah

E1 starts in Jeddah, while Riyadh already hosts Formula 1’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix (March 7-9, 2024) and the region loves racing events. The Gulf has some of the best crowds and the region is already very engaged with this type of spectacle.

Is Seabird looking beyond the Racebird and E1 series with its own products?

The Racebird is our entry product. We’re also developing a Seabird of about 15m and three smaller models, closer to my original mission of making boats more available. We’ll be using foils on all our boats.

In a Column for Yacht Style, Guenat reveals how good organisation and advanced technology at Thailand’s PMG Shipyard has helped the waterfront facility build better boats and handle production challenges.

PMG Shipyard features multiple large, open production halls

It may seem obvious, and it is in many respects, but a well organised shipyard that utilises technology in advanced ways should build better boats of higher quality and do it more efficiently. However, the Covid pandemic showed that challenges don’t always appear where and when we expect them, and the solutions may be different from originally planned.

Two hours’ drive from Bangkok, PMG Shipyard is literally located ‘on the beach’ in Rayong province, Thailand’s eastern seaboard. The yard was re-built and refurbished less than a decade ago after we moved the business from a smaller production facility near Pattaya. Today, our shipyard is one of Asia’s largest, most modern facilities for building leisure yachts.

PMG is also a pioneer when it comes to solar-assisted and solar-powered catamarans, and most of the current production falls into one of those two categories.

An electric motor for a 60ft catamaran

Dealing with leading-edge technology reflects our organisation. Recent inventions and new technologies are used for energy generation and propulsion, while the way our yachts are designed and built reflect the same way of thinking, using the best-available technologies to create boats that are practical, economical and solidly built.

Thailand is a great location for a high-tech shipyard, with good access to and from all corners of the world, excellent logistics and access to skilled, well-educated boat builders. Our international staff include people from every continent, while our clients come from all over the world and frequently visit the shipyard.

The importance of good organisation and logistics became very apparent when Covid-19 took hold. For PMG, it started with a European supplier of foam cores that manufactures in China but closed for weeks due to an undefined respiratory virus.

PMG is a specialist in solar-assisted and solar-powered catamarans

Soon, lead times of vital components started to increase, making logistics a big challenge. Some products, like resin, have limited shelf life. When shipping times double, production planning also suffers.

The result was that production had to be completed with whatever products had arrived, not necessarily according to the original production schedule. Often, the same part of all boats in production would be finished at the same time. When resin, shipped from Dubai, finally arrived, vacuum infusion was going on day and night to stay within shelf-life limitations.

New equipment was also affected by the pandemic. A new, extra-wide travel lift, suitable for catamarans, arrived in 2020 when the pandemic was at its peak. However, the technicians couldn’t come to assemble the machinery, and nobody could predict when the travel bans would be lifted.

A wide travel-lift and a testing pool are among impressive hardware

That’s when the advantages of being in a highly industrialised area were again revealed. We were able to find local workers who could assemble the travel lift, which was able to enter service as planned.

PMG managed to stay Covid-free through the most stressful periods of the pandemic, which was important. The threat from the government to close production if more than two to three staff were sick was always lurking.

It was only in April 2022, after the pandemic started to ease and attitudes relaxed, that employees started to get sick. And although delays are never welcome, this was a milder variety of the virus, one that didn’t lead to any serious medical issues.

A Silent 62 is launched at the waterfront facility

While Covid-19 was a problem on many levels, there was a lot to learn from the experience. Some of those factors have made work more efficient and even more cost effective, like increasing use of online meetings.

Before the pandemic, doing a CE inspection required an inspector to travel from another country. Now, technology has been adapted, like wiring the whole shipyard for Wi-Fi connection, to make it possible to do at least some inspections online with the help of cameras and other electronic tools.

For PMG Shipyard, the Covid era taught us to prepare for the unexpected, to learn how to maintain production under circumstances that are not ideal. And while no one can predict how future pandemics will affect suppliers and third-party logistics, the pandemic has shown which suppliers were able to stay operational and which weren’t.

Philippe Guenat, PMG Shipyard, Rayong, Thailand, Bangkok, Pattaya, solar-assisted, solar-powered, catamarans, Covid-free, CE, Dubai, Covid-free

Children from a PMG-sponsored orphanage visit the shipyard

It has also shown that having good financial foundations, modern production facilities that are owned, not rented, and professional employees who are passionate about their work can all work together to help us get through difficult times.

PMG was able to build and launch very high-tech, solar powered yachts throughout the pandemic, and if there is another crisis, the knowledge gained will help us remain productive.

Guenat is the owner of PMG Shipyard, where yacht production includes the Cora Cat 48 represented by Multihull Solutions, the Solar Explorer 52 with e-propulsion and the Silent 60/62 solar-powered catamarans. The shipyard evolved from the former Bakri Cono yard at Ocean Marina, where the Swiss developed his plans for a solar-assisted powercat by launching the Heliotrope 65 in 2013. Increasing his involvement with the builder, Guenat sourced the current 20,000sqm seaside location in Rayong, where operations began in 2016 and the shipyard was renamed PMG after he fully bought the company in 2019.

Considered to be the very first supercar, its design was so ahead of its time that it redefined performance capabilities, serving as the basis of Mercedes’ cutting-edge technology in their winning Grand Prix cars even as late as 1908. Manufacturers throughout the world would boast in their advertisements that their cars were built “in the style of Mercedes,” as these were the cars everyone wanted to make, drive, and own. Its importance, influence, and indelible legacy cannot be overstated.

Designed by Wilhelm Maybach and produced by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) at the behest of Emil Jellinek, the Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP is widely regarded as the first modern, high-performance automobile. Powered by a 9.25-liter F-head inline four-cylinder engine, which produced an ample 60 HP, the Mercedes was capable of reaching speeds topping 80 mph, making it the fastest production car in the world at the turn of the 20th century. The Mercedes-Simplex featured many of the mechanical and technical advances of its time, including a state-of-the-art chassis with a low center of gravity, a gated H-pattern four-speed gearbox, smooth scroll-type clutch, dual-chain drive, and honeycomb radiator. Between 1903 and 1905, the Mercedes-Simplex 60 HP dominated the world of racing, winning countless speed trials, hill climbs, and circuit races. Its unparalleled performance capabilities were most prominently displayed at the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup in Ireland, where Belgian racing driver Camille Jenatzy won the race outright, defeating purpose-built racing machines in what was a stock production car delivered to a private customer.

Today, the car remains in highly original condition, with its fabulous Rothschild bodywork still retaining much of its original leather upholstery. This car is one of only four remaining examples in private ownership, with a fifth example, a Long-Wheelbase Omnibus, at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Further, the Harmsworth Mercedes is one of only two such cars with original coachwork still intact. Remarkably, this car has never changed hands, remaining as an heirloom within the Harmsworth family for over 120 years. However, what is most important is that this is the only Mercedes 60 HP that has a known racing pedigree, and a winning one, at that! It is being offered for sale for the very first time in its history, and is among the most significant cars to ever come to public auction. Gooding & Company has never before offered a car from such long-standing single-family ownership and is honored to present one of the most valuable antique-era cars in existence. Presented from the family of one of England’s most influential figures of the modern era, with documented period competition history, this Mercedes-Simplex comes to market as one of the most historic, important, and groundbreaking automobiles from the dawn of motoring – setting the stage for a historic moment ready to unfold in front of the world at the upcoming Amelia Island Auctions this March.

1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster (Approximately between USD 2,200,000 – USD 2,800,000)

The iconic 300 SL Roadster needs no introduction, as it is one of the most coveted and revered sports cars ever produced. Gooding & Company is proud to offer one of the most original, well-preserved 300 SLs of any type in existence, chassis 198.042.7500348, for its upcoming Amelia Island Auctions. This extremely rare factory Rudge-wheel Roadster is one of less than 30 produced and is believed by the consignor to retain the vast majority of its original paint, along with its original interior, soft top, and countless other rarely seen details. This Roadster has had just three owners from new, and was retained by its second owner for a remarkable 54 years. In current ownership, the 300 SL received a painstakingly careful mechanical restoration undertaken by leading 300 SL specialists HK Engineering, who went to great lengths to preserve its original finishes in the engine compartment and other areas. The Roadster is resplendent in Silbergrau Metallic (Silver-Gray Metallic) with a Rot (Red Leather) interior and Schwarz (Black) soft top. The car is accompanied by an original set of Hepco-fitted luggage, along with manuals, a jack, tool kit, a second set of date-stamped Rudge wheels, a spare injection pump, and rare factory onboard parts kit. It also retains its matching-numbers engine, body, chassis, steering box, rear end, and front axles, per a copy of its Mercedes-Benz data card. The sheer number of this Roadster’s astonishing attributes make it an automobile of true historic import and extreme rarity. This singular Mercedes-Benz will impress anyone fortunate enough to see it, and a close inspection by even the most knowledgeable 300 SL enthusiast will be highly rewarded.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (Approximately between USD 1,600,000 – USD 1,800,000)

This fastidiously maintained 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing comes to Amelia Island with an exceptionally documented history from new, consisting of just two California owners from 1955 to 2023 before acquisition by the consignor. Its first owner was Glen Smith Harman, M.D., who regularly drove the car, accumulating over 130,000 miles by the end of 1967. The doctor exercised as much precision with the care of his beloved Gullwing as he did in his profession, keeping exceptional records of services and routine maintenance performed on the car throughout the decades. An engine rebuild was performed in 1973 by local 300 SL expert Rudy Geipel, and in 1986, the Gullwing was repainted in its original DB50 White. After Doctor Harman passed away in 1999, his wife Lillian carefully handpicked the car’s next caretaker, and in 2003, the Gullwing made its way into the hands of Gull Wing Group member and accomplished mechanic, Robert West. West owned the car for the next two decades, enjoying it sparingly on club events. Never before offered for public sale, this Gullwing is a true standout among the many examples that have previously graced the auction stage, retaining the essence of a well-maintained and lovingly cared-for 300 SL with a comprehensive, California-from-new provenance.

It was another impressive turnout at the world’s biggest indoor boat show, but down almost 10 per cent on last year’s attendance.

The 55th edition of Boot Dusseldorf attracted 214,000 visitors across nine days in a cold January in inland Germany, down from the 237,000 in 2023 and 250,000 in 2020, when there were also over 1,900 exhibitors before the pandemic led to a three-year hiatus.

Organiser Messe Dusseldorf cited “very difficult conditions, from the arrival of winter weather to strikes” among challenges this year, but said the show once again demonstrated its excellent international standing in the industry.

Wolfram Diener, CEO and President of Messe Düsseldorf, said: “With 214,000 visitors from 120 countries, we’ve achieved a good result and can be more than satisfied in these challenging times. Customers and exhibitors have a unique platform for networking here. It’s great. We were once again able to underpin Boot Düsseldorf’s leading position with an inspiring business atmosphere in the exhibition halls.”

Organisers of the event succeeded in increasing both its proportion of trade visitors, from 18 per cent to over 21 per cent, as well as the ‘internationality’ of its customers, from 23.7 per cent to 34.3 per cent of visitors.

Overall, visitors revealed interest in sailing yachts (42 per cent), power boats (38.2 per cent), diving (27 per cent), boat wear (25.7 per cent), nautical tourism (19.4 per cent), charter (11.7 per cent) and surfing (9.8 per cent). A high percentage (94%) of visitors were extremely positive about the show programme.

Princess and Sunseeker were again the biggest exhibitors in Hall 6, the area dedicated to luxury motor yachts. Sunseeker’s nine models included the Europe debuts of the Ocean 182 and Predator 75, while the 95 Yacht customised for the Meros Yachtsharing programme hosted an appearance by F1 driver Esteban Ocon, a brand ambassador for the co-ownership programme.

Princess’s display was headed by the brand’s flagship X95, the show’s largest yacht, making its Dusseldorf debut, with the length of the Plymouth builder’s eight models on display totalling almost 600ft.

Simon Clare, the shipyard’s Executive Director of Marketing, said: “Boot Dusseldorf is the perfect kickstart to the boating year. It’s always a spectacular event for visitors and exhibitors, and this year was no exception. The biggest show on the marine calendar, it’s also one of the most compelling showcases for the industry and we were delighted to contribute with one of the strongest line-ups we’ve had at the show.

“Being the first show of the year, Boot is often a good barometer for how the market may perform for the rest of the year and we were encouraged by how busy we were at the Princess stand and by the quality of the conversations we had. Both the sales completed at the show and the number of conversations to continue later back that up, so we’re optimistic for the year ahead.”

Bavaria Yachts exhibited powerboats in Hall 1 and sailing yachts in Hall 16, with management delighted with the attendance at both displays.

“We were delighted with the high visitor footfall at our two stands in Hall 1 for powerboats and in Hall 16 for sailing yachts, especially at the weekends but also on weekdays, and even more so about the consistently positive feedback from visitors about our yachts,” said Michael Müller, Bavaria’s CEO.

“We also used Boot to exchange ideas with our suppliers and new contacts from the yacht industry. We thank the trade fair company and the boot Düsseldorf team for their professional organisation of the trade fair and, after nine days in Düsseldorf, we can now look forward to 2024 with confidence.”

Patric Polch, Managing Director of Boote Polch, a dealer for Nimbus, Aquador, Paragon, Axopar and Brabus Marine, was similarly full of praise.

“We’re very satisfied with the outcome. Boot Düsseldorf is particularly important because it kicks off the water sports season and appeals to an enormous number of people due to its huge media presence. The mix of visitors to the trade fair fits in perfectly with our product range. In addition to many important domestic customers, a high level of internationality was also noticeable,” Polch said.

“At the same time, we noticed that the expertise of the customers was extremely high and the quality of the discussions was first-class. We registered far more demand at boot 2024 than in the previous year. It was particularly busy at the weekends, but we also welcomed many well-informed water sports enthusiasts from Germany and many European countries during the week.”

The 2025 edition of Boot Düsseldorf will be held from January 18-26.

Following the release of the GTX116 last year, the Ferretti Group builder is developing the second model in its Sport Utility Yacht series.

Pershing expects to stage the world premiere of its GTX80 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 10-15), having debuted the GTX116 at Europe’s biggest in-water boat show last September. The CE Class A planing boat is equipped with three 1,000mhp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 engines, with preliminary data predicting a cruising speed of 28 knots and a top speed of 34 knots.

The second model in Pershing’s Sport Utility Yacht series, the GTX80 is another design collaboration between Vallicelli Design and Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

The yacht has an overall length of 78ft 8in (24m), a hull length of 76ft 4in and a beam of 19ft, which is expanded when the aft bulwarks are opened. The profile shows a near vertical bow, a continuous, slightly convex sheer line, an arch-shaped deckhouse and an optional carbon-fabric hard top.

The bulwarks in the bow have been lightened by a longitudinal slot, while the bulwarks in the stern have a dual function, both incorporating the winches and converting into lateral terraces that swing down to expand the beach club area by the water.

The stern platform has a dual linear lift function that allows it to be move between three positions: lowered to launch the tenders, the default ‘middle’ position or raised slightly so it’s level with the aft living area and drop-down sides.

The beach club is overlooked by the cockpit, which features facing sofas either side of a table. To starboard are stairs to the 23sqm sun deck, while side decks access the foredeck, which has an integrated sun pad.

The saloon features extensive glazing and criss-crossed, diagonal strips of LED lighting in the metallic silver paint ceiling, while the various settings use materials featuring tones that are evocative of steel, water and electricity.

The interior layout starts with an open galley-bar to port that faces aft to the cockpit and starboard to a long L-shaped sofa, while forward is a L-shaped sofa to port opposite a cabinet and stairs to starboard.

Set on a slightly-raised level, the almost full-beam helm station features a huge windshield with no central pillar. A sunroof above the windshield can be opened for natural ventilation.

On the lower deck, the four guest cabins include a full-beam master suite, which is clad from top to bottom in cloud-effect, sky-blue leather panelling, applied with different spacings and widths.

The colour pairings have been chosen to point up contrasts, with the leather sofas in pale but warm colour tones combined with colder steel-effect metallic lacquer, just as the sky-blue leather in the cabins is juxtaposed with the warmer feel of the theme wood.

All the bathroom areas have metallic lacquered panels on the walls and feature sculptural furniture in a sky blue like the leather in the cabins. The crew quarters including a twin-berth cabin are accessed from the aft cockpit, through a door under the flybridge staircase.

The fast-growing Finnish brand has premiered the 400 GTC, the enclosed sister model of the 400 GTO that debuted last year.

Saxdor staged the world premiere of the 400 GTC at Boot Düsseldorf, where the Finnish brand showed the new model alongside the 400 GTO that had its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

Featuring an overall length of 40ft 8in and a beam of 11ft 6in, the Saxdor 400 GTC was designed by Sakari Mattila, who founded the company as well as Aquador, Paragon, XO and Axopar.

The second version of Saxdor’s 400 platform is a more enclosed version of the model and is offered with 700-800hp of power through two outboard engines, such as the twin 400hp Mercury V10s fitted on the hull shown in Dusseldorf.

On the 400 GTC, the yacht’s wheelhouse extends full beam, like on the GTO, but with the sides sealed by insulated glazing. The wheelhouse provides a 360-degree transparent protection and has a glass door aft.

The model has a new glass transom forward of the twin outboards and has the long lateral terraces seen on the GTO, which provide plenty of outdoor space and increase the ease of circulation around the boat.

Furniture includes a central aft sunpad, an L-shaped sofa and a foldable table to starboard, and a two-seat sofa and galley to starboard. The helm station is to starboard, while the port side has access to the foredeck, which features a U-shaped sofa and a foldable table.

The lower deck has a forward double cabin with head as well as a midships double cabin, each accessed by separate stairs. It’s also possible to add a third berth for children.

Saxdor is now developing a new flagship, the 460 GTC, as well as the 320 GTWA, the fourth edition of the Saxdor 320, which is also available in GTO, GTC and GT versions. The company’s dealers in Asia include Pacific Leisure Boat in Hong Kong, Xtreme Machines in Singapore and Malaysia, and Motor Field in Thailand.
