Yachting spotlight on Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s yachting communities and industries, as well as those from further afield with an interest in superyachts were drawn to talks, debates and networking in these fields in the city, in this first week of June.

Engaging panel discussions ran over two days at the inaugural Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit (photo: Superyacht Times)

What a week this is for boating in Hong Kong.

It kicked off on Monday evening with a full house for a Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA) update meeting of its members and a guest speaker – Paul Zimmerman of Designing Hong Kong (a non-profit organisation that promotes sustainability and quality of life in the territory) – at a full events space the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC)

Then, from yesterday, the two-day Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit (APSS) took place, with some 150 guest speakers and industry attendees filling a function room at a five-star hotel on Hong Kong Island.

HKBIA agenda

Lawrence Chow (above right), the chair of HKBIA – which promotes the leisure marine industry and has three to four such meetings a year – confirmed that there is a Hong Kong Boat Show scheduled for late November-early December 2024, which will be preceded by a boating industry conference.

He briefly mentioned the perennial need for more berths and moorings in Hong Kong before he handed over to Zimmerman (above right) who spoke of the need to expand not only moorings but also storage facilities for smaller boats and marine toys. He noted that surf or paddle boards were too large for many people to store in homes. This is at odds with the territory possessing the longest coastline in any coastal city, he pointed out, before mentioning plans for marinas and moorings and where they are at — also advising that To Kwa Wan in Kowloon would be a great landing and mooring area but no such plans exist as yet.

Next up Alan Reid (above right) of Icomia (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) and Marine Manager at RHKYC spoke on the further sweeteners and action needed in decarbonisation in Hong Kong’s pleasure boat industry. Simple changes such as keeping hulls and propellers clean, along with more efficient hull designs, optimised weight, LPG engines and availability of and incentives for ‘clean non-fossil power’ (battery & hydrogen) were mentioned.

In Singapore, all harbour craft is to be decarbonised by 2050, he added – no such plans are yet tabled in Hong Kong.

Ewa Stachurska (above right), Vice President of Marketing, Strategic Partnerships and Business Development at Simpson Marine – the regional yacht distributor, services and charter company headquartered in Hong Kong – presented figures on how much leisure-yachting ownership and associated industries help economies they are in. When striving for community financial goals, she mentioned that in Italy, where the industry is widely developed, the figure is approximately US$1:9, for money spent on marine activities – meaning a factor of nine goes back into the wider economy.

She decried the mooring shortage regionally, explaining that with the rise in sales of boats across the seven countries in Asia where her company is operating, owners are faced with too few available berths.

Chow wrapped up by adding that in July a survey on boating improvements will go out to HKIBA members, to be completed by September, after which findings will be disclosed at the pre-Hong Kong Boat Show 2024 conference before being presented Icomia and to the Hong Kong Government.

It was a fine endorsement of Hong Long’s place in the world’s yachting – and specifically, superyachting sphere – that, spearheaded by the Dutch publication, Superyacht Times, the APSS (Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit) took place over two days.

As Yacht Style, a media partner of the event, and we publish this online article, we can reflect and show images from Day 1.

The Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association was a supporting partner of this event, largely held at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel by day (pictured above), where a roster of panel discussions spanned the topics of managing/operating yachts in APAC; building a charter fleet; developing the charter market; Dubai as a hub for superyachts; and selling superyachts in Asia – among others.

But just what makes this model the choice of royalty?

The Saxdor 400 GTO is the Finnish boatmaker’s flagship design, and features more of the innovative hallmarks that fans of the boatmaker have come to expect.

Modular and spacious – a nod to the “private island” concept that inspires its design – the 400 GTO certainly achieves an open-plan boating experience. An expansive open wheelhouse extends to the full beam of the boat for optimum living space and is fitted with stylish plush seating.

After a day’s sailing, guests are invited to drop anchor and lower down five-metre-long side terraces to trail their toes in ocean waves before, perhaps, venturing up to sunset drinks at a well-appointed bow seating area.

The Crown Prince will no doubt enjoy spending time with his guests on a full-sized sunpad on the aft deck and appreciate the generous boost to deck space allowed by twin cockpit balconies that extend halfway along the boat’s total length of just over 40ft.

Able to accommodate five guests comfortably, the cruiser features a forward double cabin with a separate bathroom, an additional mid cabin, and, tucked under companionway steps, room for an added children’s cabin.

Up to 42 knots can be achieved in the 400 GTO model.

Saxdor’s CEO Erna Rusi, alongside a senior team, assembled to oversee a smooth handover to the prince and was clearly excited. “We cannot wait to see His Highness enjoy the incredible features of this boat,” expressed Rusi.

And, features there are many. His Highness is known for a discerning taste and high regard for fine craftsmanship. In the Saxdor 400 GTO he will be well able to bask in a boat that offers both style and speed.

It was touchdown for the collaborative design project of Wally’s first hull of its performance-sailing cruiser line – featuring design input from judel/vrolijk & co

The new wallywind110, first in the Wally shipyard’s wallywind performance-sailing cruiser range, just launched at the weekend

It was touchdown for the collaborative design project of Wally’s first hull of its performance-sailing cruiser line – featuring design input from judel/vrolijk & co

Just over a year after the launch of the wally101 Full Custom, the first hull of the new wallywind110, named Galma, touched the sea for the first time on June 1, 2024.

This marks a significant milestone in the journey that officially began in 2022 for the wallywind performance-sailing cruiser range, which will also feature the wallywind130 and the wallywind150.

And following the debut hull, a second wallywind110 is already under construction.

“The launch of this first semi-custom sail model since Wally became part of Ferretti Group in 2019 is a very significant moment for us,” said Stefano de Vivo, Wally Managing Director.

“Not only does it coincide with the brand’s 30th anniversary, but it also once again confirms how relevant the sailing superyacht sector is for Wally. We have always been leader in this segment, and we aim to continue anticipating market trends by creating yachts capable of becoming true benchmarks in both yachting and design”.

At 33m in overall length the wallywind110 is sleek, with plenty of deck space

The launch of the wallywind110 was an anticipated moment of celebration, attended not only by the management of Wally and Ferretti Group, but also by the entire team and workforce involved in the project that had been promising a launch by the summer. Along with their families, they admired the new superyacht taking its first sail at sea.

The bright metallic paint with blue reflections on the all-carbon hull of the wallywind110 wowed the attendees. Designed by the experienced team at reputed German racing sailboat designer studio judel/vrolijk & co, the paint shifts tone with the changing light around the yacht, adding an additional element to the eye-catching elegance of Wally’s latest gem.

It was touchdown for the collaborative design project of Wally’s first hull of its performance-sailing cruiser line – featuring design input from judel/vrolijk & co

The launch also showcased the unique deck layout, resulting from the know-how of Wally’s internal design team in collaboration with Italian Santa Maria Magnolfi yacht design studio, which helped develoo the exterior and interior design of the wallywind110.

“The wallywind110 is not just a superyacht that promises impressive performance,” explains Wally Founder and Chief Designer Luca Bassani.

“Wally has always been synonymous with both performance and design. The thoughtful study of the wallywind110’s deck spaces has resulted in an 80sqm cockpit, free of technical equipment [which is all relocated at the stern], comparable to that of a sailing superyacht at least 60m long.

“The owner and their guests can relax on sofas, sunbeds and seating. Not to mention the other two lounge areas located on the ‘sea terrace’ at the stern and on the foredeck.”

Custom designed by Guido de Groot and built by Van der Valk for a Hong Kong owner, the all-aluminium Blue Jeans is a tailor-made 34m masterpiece.

On a tour around Europe, Blue Jeans visited London

There are few more exciting challenges for a shipyard than an owner telling you to impress them. This happened during the build of Blue Jeans, a sleek and very blue motor yacht built by Van der Valk in southern Netherlands and based in Hong Kong since early 2023.

At her home in Aberdeen Marina Club, the all-aluminium yacht is easily recognisable due to sporty, dynamic lines and a hull in a custom deep-blue metallic paint developed with Alexseal, with the new coating named ‘Blue Jeans’.

The 33.74m tailor-made raised pilothouse is an attractive addition to Asia’s resident superyachts and an eye-catching testament to Van der Valk, the Dutch shipyard that specialises in bespoke 25-40m builds and offers semi-custom ranges including the BeachClub line.

The builder clearly rose to the Hong Kong client’s challenge, judging by the smile on his face as he took delivery in late 2022 before the yacht’s maiden voyage took in Belgium, France and the UK, where some iconic photos were captured in front of London’s Tower Bridge.

However, it’s worth noting that the custom build is a true-blue team effort, with Van der Valk collaborating with two Dutch studios, Guido de Groot Design on the exterior and interior, and Diana Yacht Design for naval architecture.

Simpson Yacht Charter, Sanlorenzo SL90A, Hong Kong charter, Hong KongA maximum speed of 28 knots, and cruising at 25 knots were owner requirements

Van der Valk described the project as both enjoyable and challenging. So challenging that it also billed Blue Jeans as one of the most complex superyachts it has created to date. Building the yacht during the Covid pandemic added an extra challenge to the project, as the shipyard tried to keep the owner as involved as if he was able to physically visit the yard.

The owner required the shipyard to create a fast vessel able to reach 28 knots and cruise for longer periods of time at 25 knots. To achieve this, Van der Valk worked with Diana Yacht Design to develop a semi-displacement hull with a hard chine V-shape, propelled by two 2,600hp MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines. Two tunnels over the propellers were designed to make space for bigger props and increase efficiency without increasing the draft.

The engine girders were strengthened to support bigger engines, while the gearbox and drivetrain were modified to transfer that extra power to the propellers. Using larger-diameter propellers improved efficiency and enabled power to be used optimally. To help create the space for the expansive engine room, the 4m aluminium tender is stored sideways in the aft garage. Created inhouse, the fully-custom tender matches the mothership and has a 50kW Torqeedo 50 electric outboard engine connected to a 40kWh BMW i3 battery pack.

SHARP EXTERIOR

While much of Diana Yacht Design’s impressive work is hidden below the surface, Guido de Groot’s exterior work is not only notable but a star attraction. The Dutch design studio was tasked by the owner to create a sleek-looking yacht yet one with plenty of interior and exterior entertaining space and lots of headroom, which required a tall flybridge and raised bow.

Simpson Yacht Charter, Sanlorenzo SL90A, Hong Kong charter, Hong KongAs well as the exterior, Guido de Groot Design handled the interior of Blue Jeans

It’s hard not to stare when you’re in the presence of such a stunning superyacht, which looks fast and slim yet houses expansive volumes that include ceilings that rise to almost 2.5m in the saloon. The blue used on the hull and flybridge base is an attention grabber, while the client’s request to not have any hint of white was achieved by a silver-grey flybridge structure and blackout surfaces on the glass.

The dark glazing used all along the main deck, in strips along the bottom of the bulwarks and for the long hull windows even helps Blue Jeans appear as a widebody yacht from some angles.

The outdoor areas include a long cockpit, which includes square loungers side by side and facing coffee tables and loose chairs, making the covered area more suitable for relaxing, cocktails and nibbles than alfresco dining.

Two symmetrical side decks lead to the foredeck, where innovative design presents guests with a C-shaped sofa, a pop-up table and a sunbathing area integrated into the forepeak, with Diana Yacht Design helping create a flush surface by locating the anchoring equipment below deck.

The naval architect’s influence extended to the sun deck, as it worked for the first time on designing a retractable dive board, which is integrated near the aft end of the port bulwark.

ASIAN FUSION INTERIOR

At the brainstorming stage, the forward-thinking client asked Van der Valk and Guido de Groot Design to surprise and impress him with interior concepts. The shipyard presented a range of options and was thrilled when he opted for the most intricate and radical, which included incorporating beautiful natural materials.

A day head and showers for day guests have been incorporated

With the design scheme reflecting a fusion of Northern European and Asian styles, the interior includes a wide variety of materials including multiple marbles, metals and woods. Liquid metal was used for walls and doors, copper accents are seen on walls, light fixtures and furniture, while reconstituted teak is used in wooden trims for the walls and ceilings.

Letting natural materials speak for themselves was a core ethos of the project, although some metals proved particularly challenging to integrate. The use of liquid metal was new to Van der Valk, which created bespoke panels onto which the alloy was poured and transformed into a pattern prior to solidification.

The overall layout of Blue Jeans was designed around the need for multi-functional use and to accommodate multiple generations of the owner’s family, so is equally suitable for large groups on day trips and extended voyages.

From the cockpit, large sliding doors open to welcome guests to an interior that starts with a hallway and counters in White Carrara marble. Forward is a quite stunning saloon, offering stunning views and natural light through tall windows and sliding glass doors on both sides.

LIGHTING UP

Simpson Yacht Charter, Sanlorenzo SL90A, Hong Kong charter, Hong Kong

The saloon has sliding doors, fold-down balconies to each side and Barrisol LED ceiling

The saloon is also illuminated by one of the yacht’s signature interior highlights, a fully lit Barrisol ceiling, attractively arranged in diagonal square panels lined by copper detailing that gives guests another reason to cast their eyes above.

Recessed lighting is used cleverly throughout the interior, from shelves in the day head to the dining area.

The saloon is laid out in a ‘walkaround’ design, with custom Poltrona Frau sofas and chairs set in a long rectangle around marble-topped coffee tables. The seats can be moved to make the most of the outdoor views, such as when the sliding doors are opened or even placed outside on the drop-down balconies. The furniture can even be rearranged or partially removed to make space for a dance floor.

To cater to groups of day trip guests, having enough areas to shower during the day was a requirement. To meet that demand, the day head accessed by the starboard hallway doubles as a shower area, while the large bathroom on the lower deck in-between the two guest cabins can be used by day guests.

The dining area is bathed in natural light

On the main deck, the starboard hallway leads forward past the door to the galley and onto the formal dining room. This magnificent space offers spectacular views and daylight through long windows on both sides but also four large, square skylights, which are positioned directly above the round, eight-seat Fletcher Capstan dining table that can be downsized to a smaller table for playing games.

Forward in each corner are symmetrical doors to full-height wine fridges that flank a long, dark counter in Nero Marquina marble, with storage cabinets above and below. Grey Fior di Bosco marble is used for a hip-high cabinet in the aft port corner.

From the saloon, the port hallway accesses the stairs down to the lower deck, which lead first to the full-beam master suite midships. The room features a sofa along the port side, a desk and storage on starboard side, and a forward-facing bed flanked by grey, textured liquified-metal doors.

The port door leads to the walk-in shower featuring a striped bench, while the starboard door leads to the twin-sink bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, with both rooms featuring rare Lapis Lazuli Blue marble.

The airy owner’s suite

The guest cabins include a twin and a double aft and fore of a shared bathroom to starboard, while the VIP to port has an en-suite bathroom. Forward, accessed from the galley, is the crew area including a crew mess and two en-suite cabins, each with twin bunks. Blue Jeans has won multiple awards, although the biggest reward is an owner’s smile after seeing his challenge met.

It all started with a wacky idea from Lagoon departments’ brainstorming: how could the whole Lagoon family celebrate the turquoise brand’s 40th anniversary together?

With over 7,000 sailing catamarans built, in a range of models from 40 to 78ft, Lagoonowner events have built up loyal communities the world over.

The idea of Lagoon World Escapade was born. It comprised of three days of sailing, sharing and festivities around the world – 30 Escapades in all – made possible with the help and enthusiasm of Lagoon’s worldwide distribution network to pay tribute to the brand that launched in 1984.

Over 400 boats – representing all models, from the smallest to the largest Lagoon yachts – and 2,400 participants gathered to celebrate Lagoon’s anniversary in 30 destinations. Some Escapades, such as the one organized in Turkey, celebrated with as many as 40 catamarans.

Day and night, the event’s worldwide Whatsapp group continued to record magnificent images of catamarans in dreamy landscapes, happy crews in rallies, moments of celebration and conviviality – around turquoise cocktails, awards ceremonies, and seaside activities – as well as magical moments of contemplation of the flora and fauna that owners favour in their respective locales.

“Participants enjoyed taking part in every Lagoon Escapade, but when they realised that this anniversary was being celebrated in so many places at the same time, they felt intensely happy,” said Thomas Gailly, Lagoon Director.

The show spotlights the Italian and international yachting industry. With 30 new shipyards and 15 world premieres appearing, 240 boats are due to be exhibited in water within a 50,000sqm basin, stretching approximately 2.8km in length, across more than 1,100m of docks, facilitated by a significant infrastructural effort within the Venice Arsenale complex. The show also encompasses 30,000sqm of external exhibition areas and factory buildings dating back to the 1500s.

“The Venice Boat Show is not merely a trade fair; it’s an opportunity for knowledge exchange, networking, and a focus on sustainability,” said Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice.

“We delve into discussions about the sea and its conservation, the importance of water as the source of life, and the preservation of nature. Moreover, the Show serves as a grand celebration of rowing and traditional sailing, paying homage to our heritage and reminding us that each of us possesses a spirit akin to Marco Polo’s.”

Sessa C38

Of the 216 Italian exhibitors, 50 are Venetian, including some traditional shipbuilding craftsmanship from the Venice lagoon. International exhibitors come from the UK, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

From Italy’s motoryacht yards, Absolute shows four models, including the new 52 Fly. Azimut Benetti moors its new Azimut Seadeck 6 (said to reduce emissions by 40 per cent with average use over a year). Sessa Marine shows its new Sessa C38, as well as C48 and C44 models.

Contemporary Italian brand Evo Yachts makes its first appearance at the show.  Ferretti Group present the new Custom Line Navetta 38, and Ferretti Yachts Infinyto 90. Sanlorenzo Yachts exhibits the Sanlorenzo SD96 and two BlueGame models: the BG42 and 54 – under an art installation by Lorenzo Quinn in a basin.

Overseas motoryacht showings include Axopar, Beneteau, Green Line, Nimbus, Prestige, Saxdor, and Sunseeker. The sailing segment has shown to be growing, including important Italian and international shipyards among both monohulls and catamarans.

“The Venice Boat Show has always had a significant focus on electric and hybrid propulsion systems,” said Alberto Bozzo, commercial director of the show.

“In 2024, more than 50 green boats will be present. Major innovations come from segments adopting these propulsion systems, with increasingly larger hulls and greater ranges, and from the introduction of hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion systems, which we will showcase extensively.

“We will also see the new frontiers of charging technologies on display, including the use of photovoltaic solar panels and ‘mother’ boats that recharge smaller vessels.”

Riva brand’s newly refurbished La Spezia shipyard officially opened last week, with Chairman Tan Xuguang and CEO Alberto Galassi making announcements.

Last Friday, May 17, the Ferretti Group officially opened its Riva shipyard in La Spezia, northwest Italy, in a ceremony attended by Chairman Tan Xuguang and CEO Alberto Galassi, as well as by local authorities and a delegation from Weichai, the Group’s longstanding shareholder.

The La Spezia production site now plays a crucial industrial role and employs over 750 full-time workers, representing a strategic centre for the Ferretti Group in the area of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas.

The refurbishment covered the production and management facilities at the shipyard in La Spezia – where Riva yachts are produced – as well as the lounge area that offers hospitality to owners, captains and crew.

A total area of 64,000sqm, with 33 berths on more than 400m of docks, is made up of four industrial sheds with 21 production stations, plus another two sheds totalling 1,000sqm dedicated to the painting process.

Work at the production centre, which now has photovoltaic plants and exclusive purpose-designed spaces such as the Riva Lounge, is focused on seven Riva models from 76ft to 130ft. When fully operational, the site will make it possible to launch another 30 boats a year of up to 40m in length.

Located in an area of regional interest, the site aims to protect and respect the natural environment, as certified by Rina according to standards ISO 14001:20151 and ISO 9001:2015.

The Shipyard forms part of the Miglio Blu (meaning Blue Mile) – a project to promote the local area and its excellence in yachting while respecting the surrounding environment.

After the excellent quarterly report just announced, the opening ceremony was an opportunity to see first-hand the shipyard’s new look with an audience of local and national authorities and a key moment to take stock of the Group’s achievements. Group Chairman Tan again confirmed his appreciation for the work of Ferretti Group management and renewed his confidence in the team of managers led by Alberto Galassi as they look ahead to the plans and challenges of the years to come.
