Nautor Swan has begun building hull one of the Swan 128 in Finland, where it’s also completing the first hulls of the Swan 88 and Swan 108.

Swan 128

Nautor Swan is expanding its Maxi Swan Yachts line with a new flagship Swan 128, which is already under construction in Pietarsaari, with the hull plug already completed. Following the launches of the Swan 98 in 2020 and the Swan 120 last year, the Swan 128 is among three new Maxi Swan Yachts models in build, along with the Swan 88 and Swan 108.

German Frers, who has been designing for Swan since 1981, is responsible for the naval architecture of the Swan 128, which marks his 13th new model – including seven 80ft-plus Maxis – for the Finnish builder in the last 10 years. Hull features include a double rudder blade, while the contained heel – around 20 degrees in optimal conditions – enables a comfortable ride.

Swan 128

Cape Horn Engineering handled CFD analysis, to test and optimise the shape of the canoe body in all dynamic sailing conditions.

Micheletti + Partners designed the deck and the coachroof, developing upon the style of the Swan 108. The design was studied and enhanced through an exchange between all the parties involved, especially in terms of the relationship between the hull and superstructure, the latter being particularly agile and sporty despite the semi-raised saloon layout.

The bow has been designed to have good separation between the headstay and Code 0 while the cockpit offers the typical three-area division that characterises all Swans. The front area, close to the deckhouse, is protected by a sprayhood and a bimini top, while a retractable model with rigid structure is optional.

The classic configuration with C-shaped sofas, double table and aft-facing sun deck is standard, while the flat-floor layout has no fixed volumes and can be customised. The central cockpit area includes the winches and the second companionway, connecting the crew quarters with the wheels.

The entire stern is dedicated to the beach club, which connects to the large swim platform that can be further extended in the optional double-action version. The aft garage can accommodate a tender up to 4.5m.

Misa Poggi worked with Frers and the shipyard on the interiors, as she has done for all recent Swan Yachts and Maxis. The interior’s notable features include a large area of the foreship entirely dedicated to the owner with no design constraints in terms of shape or structure, allowing the space to be customised and to make each yacht unique.

Swan 88

Meanwhile, the Swan 88 and Swan 108 are also by the design team of Frers, Micheletti and Poggi. Hull one of the Swan 88 is the yard’s first to feature a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion platform, while hull two – also in build – features a traditional diesel-powered shaft-line.

Hull one of the Swan 108 will launch in spring 2023 and has been conceived to cruise around the world, featuring a customised interior by Poggi.

Swan’s other recent maxi-sized models include the ClubSwan 125 Skorpios, which launched and started racing last year, and the ClubSwan 80, which competed in two regattas last month before its world premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Gulf Craft has initiated a collaboration with Dubai Institute of Design & Innovation (DIDI) as part of its commitment “to make the UAE a global yachting centre of excellence”. The builder’s aim is to develop a new generation of innovators by encouraging students at the Dubai Design District-based institute to consider an exciting career in the region’s expanding yachting sector.

Abeer Alshaali, Gulf Craft’s Deputy Managing Director, said: “Innovation, design and empowering the next generation of the yachting community is a passion for Gulf Craft, which is why we’re partnering with DIDI, to share its values and vision, and exchange knowledge and expertise with up-and-coming design talent.

“Maintaining our global reputation for excellence means we constantly seek world-class talent. DIDI shares our philosophy when it comes to pushing the bar in design innovation, so it’s an honour to collaborate and provide the upcoming generation with an immersive experience. But to us, what matters most is the passion and commitment an individual brings to the table. We look forward to the outcome.”

Professor Elmar Schüller (DIDI) and Abeer Alshaali (Gulf Craft)

One of the first projects with DIDI is a studio class involving students in their second, third and fourth year taking on the challenge to ‘Create new Strategic Brand and Design Innovations for Gulf Craft’. Running between September and December, the classes include a Gulf Craft Shipyard tour, a visit to the Gulf Craft Experience Centre in Dubai, and presentations judged by a panel of Gulf Craft experts.

Led by Professor Elmar Schüller, former Vice President of the Red Dot Design Award, the class is designed to develop skills in research and development, design, marketing and sales, and communications. In the final presentations, students discuss their learnings and showcase 2D and 3D design simulations.

Professor Schüller, Strategic Design Management, DIDI, said: “Partnerships with forward-thinking companies such as Gulf Craft are extremely valuable learning experiences for our students. Abeer’s passion for encouraging and empowering the next generation has delivered the impetus to create a new channel of work experience for our students.

“Through working with companies on practical projects such as this, they better understand how design and innovation strategies work in the real world and in the context of a global business and entrepreneurship.

“Innovation is not just about design or technology but also business challenges, identifying opportunities for growth and creating a value proposition that sets a brand apart. Our students are excited to have this opportunity to work in such an exciting sector, where innovation and design are paramount.”

Gulf Craft is an integrated shipyard that manages R&D, design and production in-house, last year delivering the Majesty 175, the world’s largest composite-built production superyacht. It has production facilities in Umm Al Quwain, UAE, and the Maldives, and its portfolio includes the Majesty, Nomad, Oryx and Silvercraft yacht brands.

DIDI, which had its first intake in 2018, is focused on nurturing, mentoring and creating designers. Its curriculum is designed to empower students to map out their own four-year educational journey, culminating in the region’s first Integrated Bachelor of Design degree, with a choice of concentration in the areas of Product Design, Multimedia Design, Fashion Design and Strategic Design Management.

The yacht offers a fractional propulsion system, so depending on conditions and needs, the boat can move using just one engine, a pair or all three, allowing reduced consumption at a wide range of speeds. Solar panels on the hard top supply power to run the hotel load.

Tilli Antonelli over saw product development of the SP110, Marco Arnaboldi handled hull design, while Bernardo Zuccon and Piero Lissoni designed the exterior and interiors respectively. The interior is distinguished by a two-level atrium-style interior, with both the lower and main saloons visible from the aft platform and beyond.

Nick Stratton, Sanlorenzo Asia Sales Manager, said: “We are delighted to have received the first order for this amazing new yacht by Sanlorenzo, which pushes the boundaries of design, performance and sustainability to the next level. It’s an incredibly powerful yacht that is at the same time elegant, light, nearly silent at high speeds, and provides incredibly smooth handling.

“We’ve witnessed how successful she was at the Cannes Yachting Festival, becoming one of the most iconic reveals of this season. The show was very successful for Sanlorenzo Asia, who assisted customers in selecting their own yachts from the Sanlorenzo collection. The sale of SP110 is tangible proof that Asian customers are ready for the next level in fast performance yachting.”

Sanlorenzo SX100 will debut in 2023

Sanlorenzo Asia’s recent sales also include Asia’s first SX100 – a model set to set in 2023 – and another hull of the SD118, which had its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

Briefly announced at last month’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the SX100 joins the successful SX crossover range, which also includes the SX76, SX88 and SX112. Early this summer, units of all three models were delivered to Hong Kong, while further orders for the SX76 and SX88 are due in Asia later this year.

The upcoming SX100 features many of the options available on the range’s flagship model including the signature fold-down terraces and a huge lower-deck lounge. The hull for Asia will be delivered in April 2024, with the owner working with Sanlorenzo’s designers on a bespoke interior.

“It’s rewarding to witness the remarkable growth of the SX range and its rapid expansion in Asia,” Stratton said. “Sanlorenzo’s low production numbers ensure unique builds and ample customisation options, which strongly appeals to owners seeking to purchase a special yacht that reflects their own tastes and living philosophy. This new SX100 is no different and is sure to be another stunning bespoke Sanlorenzo build.”

Multiple units of the Sanlorenzo SD118 have been sold to Asia

Asia’s latest sale of the SD118, from the builder’s semi-displacement line, joins earlier orders of the model in the region, which began after its world premiere at Cannes last year. The new sale is to Southeast Asia, which already features many large Sanlorenzo models including the SD118, SD126 and 44.5m Alloy.

The SD118 has a volume of 290GT, is available with either twin 1,622hp Cat or 1,450hp MAN engines, and has proved another success model for Sanlorenzo, with the next delivery only available in 2025.

Meanwhile, a new Sanlorenzo SL86 en route to Asia has become available for sale. The SL86 planing model features Roda and Minotti furniture, and can accommodate eight guests in four cabins and three crew.

The Honours was announced at Yacht Club de Monaco

The Superyacht Life Foundation and the Monaco Yacht Show have invited nominations for the first edition of The Honours, which aims to celebrate the people of the superyacht industry rather than the yachts. The inaugural Honours evening be held in Monaco on September 26, 2023, on the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show, with three honourees receiving a Bowsprit, an avant-garde design in carbon and crystal glass crafted by Preciosa.

Dilan Sarac, Marketing Manager of The Superyacht Life Foundation, said: “Behind the glitz, the glamour and the attention-grabbing headlines, superyachting has a deep and generous soul that is reflected both in the philanthropic endeavours of its owners and in the ideals of its professionals. The Honours is a chance for us to recognise and celebrate the endeavours of the extraordinary people this exceptional sector encapsulates.”

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of Monaco Yacht Show, said: “We believe The Honours will be a new milestone in superyachting’s history as this will be the very first award ceremony that distinguishes people behind the scenes of yachting.”

Sponsored by Feadship, BWA Yachting, RINA and Preciosa, The Honours seeks to highlight and recognise people within superyachting, presenting positive stories and actions to a wider audience.

Examples include owners, crew and industry people leading humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, citizen scientists performing groundbreaking research aboard a superyacht, business leaders preserving artisan skills, and pioneering designers and engineers developing sustainable innovations. It could also be a deckhand who goes above and beyond, or a submarine pilot who has helped guests achieve their dreams and fight their fears.

Silent-Yachts has announced that it currently has 12 superyacht catamarans under construction, ranging from the Silent 80 to the expanded Silent 120. Production is shared across the brand’s own 44,000sqm shipyard in Fano, Italy, and partner shipyard VisionF’s expansive facilities in Turkey, which cover more than 100,000sqm of production area and include the Tuzla Viaport Marina.

Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “It has been a whirlwind 12 months. Three great trends have converged to make our boats enormously successful. The rebound in yacht sales since Covid is already well documented. Add to that the growth of environmental sensibilities and the recognition that two hulls provide a far more luxurious platform for life at sea, and you have a recipe for unprecedented demand. This is the age of the super catamaran.”

The solar-electric Silent 120, in build in Turkey, has expanded from its initial design of 100ft to 120ft, and now has a huge interior volume of 499GT and 900sqm of exterior and interior space. Delivery is scheduled for 2024.

The first hull will feature a swimming pool on the aft deck and grassy areas for dog walking on the side decks. The solar hard top is designed to slide out in two sections to reveal an upper sun deck, which also doubles as a touch-and-go helipad.

The Silent 120’s solar panels are capable of generating up to 40kWp and it’s also equipped with back-up generators. The yacht cruises at eight knots and has a top speed of 16 knots.

The Silent 80, the big sister of the Silent 60 launched last year, is proving popular, with 10 orders to date and seven currently in build, with designs split between the retractable flybridge version and the 3-Deck model.

Silent 80 3-Deck

The first Silent 80 hull features the smaller flybridge, whose hard top lowers flush to the coachroof. This boat is being finished at the yard in Italy and is due for launch in March 2023.

Other customers have opted for a dedicated 90sqm sun deck with a fixed hard top. The sun deck includes a teak and stainless-steel dining table, two deep lounging areas, a huge expanse of sunbeds and a bar. The first Silent 80 3-Deck is also set for launch in March 2023.

Silent 80 3-Deck

On both versions of the Silent 80, there are lounging and dining areas, and a galley on the main deck, with the indoor helm set to starboard. Accommodation in the hulls can include four or five guest cabins, and for up to four crew members.

Solar panel production can reach 26kW, with the battery bank and e-motors sized according to the client’s wishes. The boat is optimised for up to two 340kW motors and 429kWh of battery capacity. Generators can ranging from 100kW to two 145kW units. The yacht offers a cruising speed of 6-8 knots and a top speed of 19.

Silent VisionF 82

The Silent VisionF 82 is a redesigned, hybrid version of the Turkish-built VisionF82 and is built in aluminium rather than composite. Four are currently in build, with launches staggered between December 2022 and June 2023.

The first two vessels in-build will feature a conventional propulsion system combined with Silent-Yachts solar panels on the extended aluminum hard top.

All following orders will be equipped with the new Silent VisionF solar-hybrid drivetrain, where the system can decide whether the boat will manoeuvre under electric power, diesel engine or both – an appealing compromise for those unwilling to give up the internal combustion engine. The 13.6kWp solar hard top and 160kWh battery bank will be capable of running all the hotel loads aboard and keeping the yacht silent overnight.

Alberto Galassi, CEO, Ferretti Group

Ferretti Group has acquired the majority stake in Massello S.r.l and Fratelli Canalicchio S.p.A, two companies that are part of its supply chain.

Il Massello is based in Fano, close to several of Ferretti Group’s Adriatic coast facilities, and specialises in wooden nautical furnishings, recently launching an innovative onboard assembly service. Canalicchio is based in Narni, north of Rome, and specialises in static exteriors and automatic kinetic systems for yachts.

The two transactions are aimed at improving overall profitability and gaining even more control over the production and procurement phases for Ferretti Group. As of 2021, the combined revenues of the two companies amounted to about €13 million, but Ferretti Group believes the two companies could generate sales of around €30 million by 2025.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “We have finalised these two transactions because the acquisition of control of a strategic supplier ensures stability and reliability, improves industrial performance and insourcing of expertise. We are confident that the upstream integration will allow us to express even more quality and optimise costs and time.”

Amal Yachting, which represents Ferretti Yachts, Riva and Pershing in Taiwan, has secured the sale of a Riva 102’ Corsaro Super, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The first Riva 102’ Corsaro was launched in La Spezia in May (click for article) and the yacht ordered for Taiwan is hull number five, which will be the first in Asia.

Among several new Riva models launched during the year of the brand’s 180th anniversary, the 102’ Corsaro Super is an update of the 100’ Corsaro, which had its world premiere in Hong Kong in 2017. The 102’ Corsaro Super can reach 26 knots with its standard 2,435mhp MTU 16V 2000 M96 engines, while two 2,638mhp  MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines produce a top speed of 28 knots.

The five-cabin yacht has a length of 30m, a beam of nearly 7m and 100sqm of liveable open-air spaces, with new updates including an upgraded beach club area covering 35sqm. The superstructure and the hull have been completely renewed, and new glass fashion plates aft improve aerodynamics.

The 102’ Corsaro Super features a new beach club and expanded glazing

The new model features over 140sqm of glazing and glass surfaces. The glazing in the owner’s suite has been redesigned and extended to 2m in length, amplifying the sense of space in the widebody configuration and offering views on both sides of the yacht.

Interior innovations include a choice of two saloon layouts. One focused on the dining space has a table for eight aft, while the lounge has views through extensive windows that open onto the lateral walkways. The second layout features the lounge aft and dining space central. Options include special gunwales that swing out on either side of the main deck to create terraces.

The dominant wood inside is Canaletto walnut, with its warm tones set off by satin-effect titanium ceilings or glass surfaces and cool colours.
