Celebrating 100 Years of Cartier’s Beloved Tank Cintrée

Celebrating 100 Years of Cartier’s Beloved Tank Cintrée

Drawing inspiration from the oldest Tanks, Cartier’s limited edition Tank Cintrée pays homage to its 1920s ancestors.

Cartier only revealed the Tank Cintrée 100th anniversary model recently, but all 150 numbered editions are already sold. Cartier Tank models are very desirable, but this is still a remarkable achievement for what is probably the world’s most attractive rectangular dress watch. That anniversary deserves a mention here, because Cartier celebrated 100 years of the Tank in 2017. We remember the party… The Tank story is a convoluted one, and this here, Cartier Tank Cintrée, is meant to celebrate the model in particular, which was one of the first wristwatches in the world to adopt the rectangular shape back in the heady days of the 1920s.

Now, you might engage in that contemporary habit of demanding a precise date, but consider for a moment that the Cartier Tank is a near-mythical object. This particular limited edition very closely matches a watch we have seen only in archive images, and the excellent book by Franco Cologni, Cartier: The Tank Watch (2012), the Cartier Tank Cintrée of 1924. The now-unavailable 2021 reissue of this handsome curved classic is made is in yellow gold, while the original was in platinum. However, QP reports that there was a 1921 version in yellow gold, and has the pictures to prove it.

All the features on the dial – from the apple-shaped hands and Roman numerals, to the so-called rail track and the distinctive beaded winding crown with its sapphire cabochon – are exactly as they appeared on the 1920s versions. In fact, they appear from the images to look as if they experienced a good deal of weathering. This is, of course, just for looks. Speaking of which, the crown in the 2021 version seems more like an homage to its 1924 ancestor, rather than its 1921 inspiration. Sadly, a closer inspection in person is not in the cards.

The story of the movement is also a little involved. First of all, the watch is rectangular but the manufacture calibre 9780 MC is round. Shock. Horror. But wait, what of the original? The Cartier Tank Cintrée of 1924 was powered by the LeCoultre calibre 123, which is in fact, round. Interestingly, both are also manual winders, and quite slim. The 2021 Cartier Tank Cintrée is just 6.4mm thick. We take this opportunity to salute Cartier for its success in finding homes for all their very fetching Tank Cintrée editions of 2021, and look forward to the next special edition, perhaps as soon as April…keep an eye on the official website of Cartier for more news and updates.

Sustainability: Motor Yacht Builders – CL Yachts

SHARE

CL Yachts is already benefiting from parent company Cheoy Lee’s wide-ranging expertise such as its extensive investment in carbon-fibre and solar power.

CL Yachts installed solar power on a CLB72 following an owner’s request

CL Yachts was only launched in 2018, but it has already produced one motor yacht with solar panels due to its design and engineering capacity as a brand of Cheoy Lee, meaning it shares expertise and facilities in Hong Kong and Guangdong with one of Asia’s most pioneering, historic boat builders.

One of the first hulls of the CLB72 – quickly established as CL Yachts’ most popular model so far – features six solar panels on the hardtop at the request of the owner. Solar power can be implemented on its other models upon request.

Hans Lo, Deputy Director of CL Yachts, says: “For that CLB72, the solar panels supply enough power to keep appliances running without having to rely on generators or shore power. When owners ask for solar power, we study their requirements and offer a solution that fits the usage.

CL Yachts builds from 65-96ft and has experience of solar power through parent company Cheoy Lee

“For some, this might mean enough power to keep appliances on throughout the year when the yacht’s not in use. For others, it might be enough for a day’s activities at anchor. This is just one way in which we encourage sustainability.”

Parent company Cheoy Lee has immense experience in using solar power. Its Hong Kong shipyard in Lai Chi Kok features more than 500 2sqm solar panels that yield 230kW of power, enough to cover all daily operational needs, as well as give back to the local grid.

On the commercial side, Cheoy Lee is developing 35-40m carbon-fibre catamaran ferries that will each use over 100sqm of solar panels. These charge battery banks that power a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system to be used in speed-restricted areas.

Solar panels at the Lai Chi Kok shipyard in Hong Kong

Lo stresses it’s more important to implement such technology on ferries and the likes as the commercial sector has far greater impact on the environment then the luxury sector does, but that CL Yachts benefits from such developments.

“As Cheoy Lee builds for both commercial and luxury sectors, there are areas CL Yachts can take advantage of that other luxury motor builders can’t.”

For CL Yachts, Cheoy Lee’s commercial vessels that operate on a day-to-day basis are an ideal test-bed for such systems and other areas where hybrid propulsion can be studied and refined to implement later in luxury craft, “when the technology is efficient enough to truly make a difference”.

For now, CL Yachts doesn’t think the hybrid technology exists to sufficiently power propulsion of motor yachts of the sizes they’re building, currently 65-96ft.

Inverters at the Lai Chi Kok shipyard

“For many people, hybrid propulsion systems are the first thing that come to mind when thinking about yachting and sustainability,” Lo says. “While this seems to make sense, the reality is that with our current technology, a truly efficient solution doesn’t exist for hybrid propulsion that can generate speeds most clients expect out of a motor yacht.”

Lo says there are different ways CL Yachts strives to reduce its environmental footprint in terms of yacht design including high strength-to-weight ratio and efficiency, which are among “our governing principles for every build”.

Weight-saving methods include using carbon-fibre in the hull structure, as well as thinned, composite-backed marble and light-weight honeycombed cabinetry.

“We definitely build lighter and therefore more efficient seacraft than most yachts available and we do this while adhering to strict RINA guidelines,” Lo says. “While we may not be entirely ready for hybrid propulsion, we’re making that first step and striving towards sustainability. There are many paths to a greener future.”

Groupe Beneteau and dealer Simpson Marine have released photos of Asia’s first Beneteau Antares 11, which was sold to a family in Hong Kong.

The Antares flagship is a family-style cruiser

Simpson Marine and Groupe Beneteau Asia-Pacific have released images of the first Beneteau Antares 11 in Asia, sold to a family in Hong Kong. The family-style cruiser is available in a coupé version or with a flybridge, a new option only released late last year.

The region’s first Antares 11 was photographed during a trip from Aberdeen Boat Club around the south coast of Hong Kong Island to Round Island, known for its beach and hiking, and also to Lamma Island to the west.

The yacht features a drop-down swim platform to starboard

Designed in collaboration with Sarrazin Design, the Antares 11 features an aft cockpit covered by a sliding roof, with an L-shaped sofa facing a drop-down swim platform on starboard side, clear of the two 300hp outboard engines.

The yacht has a full-width walkway on starboard side to the foredeck, which has sun loungers with backrests and a foldable sun cover for shelter.

Following the first three sales from Damen Yachting’s range of luxury expedition yachts, the Dutch builder has introduced a new-look SeaXplorer 77.

The newly designed SeaXplorer 77

Damen Yachting has revealed new designs for its 76.9m SeaXplorer 77, the first model in an updated line-up following a comprehensive review by the in-house SeaXplorer design team with exterior stylist Azure Yacht Design and operational design partner EYOS Expeditions.

The original SeaXplorer 77, La Datcha, was delivered late last year and was the second SeaXplorer to launch. The third, a 58m custom build, is due for delivery in 2022.

The updated version of the SeaXplorer 77 features a multi-purpose aft deck that can be modified for a wide variety of owner-specified requirements such as deploying a seaplane or hangaring a large seven-person submarine. All SeaXplorers are now also offered with hybrid electrical drive propulsion (PTO/PTI configuration) and battery bank for highly efficient cruising.

The multi-purpose aft deck can be modified

The 2,550GT, 252ft expedition yacht has an increased focus on exploration lifestyle features for tropical destinations including an upper-deck swimming pool, indoor-outdoor spaces with pedigree finishes, and a huge party and DJ dance space for up to 150 guests.

Enrique Tintore, SeaXplorer Design Manager at Damen Yachting, said: “With feedback from our amazing clients, SeaXplorers are right at the forefront of explorer yachting. Visiting the polar regions once in their lifetimes is on nearly every SeaXplorer client’s bucket list, but so are many tropical areas where the operational challenges shouldn’t be underestimated,” Tintore said.

“It’s about staying safe in isolation but also about enjoying the yachting lifestyle to the maximum. In fact, you don’t need to go very far from the major superyacht hubs before the benefits of an explorer yacht become clear. That’s the philosophy that our line-up reflects.”

Al fresco dining and upper-deck swimming pool

The new SeaXplorer 77 draws on the highly customised La Datcha, now roaming the world’s oceans in her first charter season and making use of her private airfield with two helicopters, hangar and aviation refuelling tank.

Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting, said: “We are enormously proud of La Datcha as well as her SeaXplorer sisters.

“When we started our ambitious SeaXplorer programme, we dreamed of something different – a luxury expedition yacht born from an innovative crossover of our Amels yachting and Damen shipbuilding technology. It was a challenging ambition, but our clients have proved that there is a growing market for true expedition yachting beyond limits.”

Saloon concept by Monaco Yacht Temptation

For the SeaXplorer 77, Damen Yachting asked its design partners to each create a luxury interior concept. Carlo Torre and his studio Monaco Yacht Temptation (MYT) created their concept having already been chosen by the owners of the first SeaXplorer, the 62m (203ft) Anawa, to create the yacht’s interior design.

Jim Dixon, Director Yachts and Aviation at London-based Winch Design, and his team created a new concept for the SeaXplorer 77, the studio’s first for the range.

MarineMax, the biggest yacht dealer in the US, has announced that hull five of the Azimut Grande Trideck has been sold to an experienced yachtsman from Houston, Texas. Azimut is currently completing the first hull of the 38.2m build, the Italian builder’s biggest-ever yacht, which tops a Grande range also featuring 25, 27, 30, 32 and 35 Metri models.

The 125ft Azimut Grande Trideck has a beam of 26ft. The US-specified build has accommodation for 10 guests and six crew, and will be ready in spring 2022. She will be delivered to the Bahamas, where the client will use her and the yacht will be available for charter through Fraser, owned by MarineMax.

Mike Doyle, a Senior Broker at MarineMax Pompano Yacht Center, has a relationship with the Texas-based buyer from previous yacht sales and services. Doyle partnered with Bob Fritsky (MarineMax Vice President of Sales), Federico Ferrante (President of Azimut-Benetti Americas) and Andrew Schneider (MarineMax Azimut Brand Manager) to conclude the sale.

The US-owned hull will be based in the Bahamas and charter through Fraser

Fritsky said: “The client considered new and brokerage yachts between 115-130ft. He eventually determined that only a new build would reach all his yachting objectives and guard his substantial investment.

“He chose the new Azimut Grande Trideck because of its design-forward aesthetics, innovative use of space and high-style interior. The client appreciated the dedicated beach club, massive sundeck, the bow dipping pool and seating, and side garage for tender and personal watercraft.”

Ferretti Group has launched Fifty, the second Riva 50 Metri, less than two years after the debut of the first.

Fifty, the second Riva 50 Metri, was launched in Ancona

Riva’s second 50 Metri, the shark-grey Fifty, has begun her life at sea following a private launch ceremony at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Division in Ancona.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “Riva Fifty is the demonstration that we Italians know how to imagine and realise masterpieces like no one else in the world. The expression ‘written on water’ was used to describe actions that have a fleeting impact, but what we have written on the water today in Ancona is another unforgettable and glorious page in Riva’s history.

“My recommendation for those in search of great emotions is to take a look at this new Riva and the breathtaking way she shines with style, legend and innovation, all thanks to the talent and expertise of the workers involved.”

Fifty follows in the footsteps of Race, the first unit of the brand’s 50m flagship. Race had its world premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2019, having been launched earlier in the year and had a spectacular private premiere in Venice in June.

Officina Italiana Design, the firm founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta and the exclusive designer of all Riva models, developed the 50 Metri in collaboration with Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari.

In a Column for Issue 57, Nicolas Lapp explains why Sunreef Yachts is developing its own solar panels, batteries and green materials for its new range of Eco catamarans.

  •
  •
  •

Nicolas Lapp, Sunreef Yachts

The yachting industry’s biggest and most important challenge for the years to come should be the development of green technologies. I feel that, all in all, we’re not doing enough to reduce the negative impact boating can have on the environment.

Being at sea has always been part of people’s lives. Whether it’s leisure, exploration, transportation or fishing, humans have always had a special connection with the seas. If we love and need the seas so much, we also owe them more respect.

As boat builders, we feel this sense of responsibility should be a fundamental element of boat design, build and use. Companies should do whatever they can to come up with more sustainable craft. Our response at Sunreef Yachts is the Eco range that we had been developing for quite some time before we outlined it globally in April 2020.

My father and I had long discussions with the team about the solutions we could envision for our Eco yachts. After launching two fantastic electric sail cats, we were ready for another big step forward: redefining solar panels for yachts.

The Sunreef 60 E electric sailing catamaran launched in 2019

Some time ago, my father had the idea to fit a mast with solar panels throughout. As we started working on this somewhat eccentric idea, we realised there was a way to integrate solar panels with composite.

This sparked another idea: solar panels all over the hulls, superstructure and every surface possible. It was a gamble, but today our R&D office has the know-how and integration is under way.

All of this wouldn’t be possible without top-quality cells. We found solar cells that ticked all the boxes for us: they are unbelievably light, flexible and shock resistant.

We now have a system that can maximise solar power generation and, on top of that, is easy to maintain and repair. We also wanted it to look nice as we didn’t want any compromise on aesthetics. If you want sustainability to be ‘cool’, the appeal of the product is vital.

Energy storage is just as important as energy generation. We wanted our Eco boats to be as efficient as possible, so we use custom-engineered batteries.

The 70 Sunreef Eco power catamaran

We considered a lot of factors in the process. Of course, capacity is vital and so is density. You don’t want heavy batteries, as this will impact the performance and autonomy of the boat. We reached a density that made our batteries close to 30 per cent lighter than those typically used in the industry.

Lastly, the lifespan of our batteries was also on the priority list. After 10 years of use they will still have 80 per cent of their original capacity. Durable components are what make your boat sustainable.

The manufacturing process is another crucial matter for bringing more sustainability into the yachting world. We’ve been studying the characteristics of basalt and flax fibre for some time and made some important progress towards building furniture using greener composites.

The process of sourcing flax and basalt is energy efficient and clean, and the physical properties of both are amazing. It’s clear to me that this is the way forward for composite yachts and we are already conducting tests to use flax and basalt for bigger structural elements.

The Sunreef 70 Eco sailing catamaran

While working on the Eco range, we did our best to make every aspect of our boats more environmentally friendly. We knew we wanted something more than catamarans with electric engines.

We also thought the moment was right to reassess the way we think of yacht interiors. Our team of designers did a great job sourcing sustainable décor materials. We realised it only takes a little bit of goodwill and some research to be able to provide our customers with a wide selection of sustainable luxury materials.

There are mineral and plant-based structures that can be used for sinks or bathtubs. We can use compressed recycled paper for our countertops. Tiles can be made of recycled monitors, while curtain fabrics can be made of old t-shirts and plastic bottles. It sounds incredible, but all of this is possible without any compromise on quality.

We are on the right path now. I feel optimistic because I can see that our client base shares the same point of view. Ultimately, it’s the owners who will shape the future of the industry. If the demand is there for sustainable yachts, then we’re bound to see a positive response from builders worldwide.

Sharly and Stephen Chun on their Absolute 58 Fly

Sports car lover Stephen Chun and his wife Sharly are hands-on owners of an Absolute 58 Fly, which they keep between Aberdeen and Sai Kung, and take out up to four times a week.

  •

Stephen is an Absolute and Ferrari lover

When you see Stephen Chun at the wheel of his Absolute 58 Fly, you see a man who loves to drive. After all, before he and his wife Sharly owned a boat, Stephen owned a black Ferrari 430 Spider, a car notable for many things including a top speed of 315kmh.

The Italian sports car may have been Stephen’s pride and joy, but after the pair married, Sharly was quick to mention that the sleek speedster wasn’t the most family-friendly vehicle.

“Sharly told me a sports car is only for two people and we have to think about our family. It made sense to have a boat instead of a sports car, so we started looking into it,” says Stephen, who turns to his wife. “Then what happened?”

“We started having our own kids and our friends had started buying yachts, small ones,” says Sharly, not missing a beat. “We realised owning a small yacht doesn’t cost that much, especially if you get a licence and drive it yourself, like we do. You don’t need to hire crew, except maybe part-time to keep it clean.”

Both Stephen and Sharly enjoy driving their Absolute 58 Fly

As their interest firmed up, Stephen started researching yachts online just as he had researched sports cars. But before deciding on a yacht, they needed somewhere to keep it, so were fortunate when a friend offered them a swing mooring in Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.

“It’s very hard to get a berth in Hong Kong, so we were very lucky our friend was able to rent a mooring to us cheaply,” says Stephen, who works in the garment industry. “This reduced one major cost.”

It also influenced the size of their yacht as the mooring only allowed for up to 50ft. After a lot of research, Stephen found a pre-owned Ferretti Yachts 500 that fit the bill, buying the yacht in 2013.

The pair both obtained a pleasure vessel operator licence, but needed a little time and help to become confident of making their way in and out of the crowded Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.

Both Sharly and Stephen have powerboat licences

Says Stephen: “We had a part-time boat boy who assisted us for the first month as we were driving the boat. We were a bit nervous at first because the typhoon shelter is so tight, but after a month we got used to it and were confident enough to do it by ourselves after that. We drove the boat ourselves for five years.”

ABSOLUTE CONVERTS

During this time, the pair – who regularly attend the Cannes Yachting Festival – became increasingly aware of Absolute. Many of their friends owned models by the Italian builder, represented by Absolute Marine in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong since 2014.

“I’d seen many Absolute models such as the 45, 50 and 52 Fly because my friends had them. I found them very spacious. The 45 was bigger than our Ferretti 500,” Stephen says. “I started liking the brand and their designs. We found out the boats were very stable, with easy maintenance. Two of our friends had the 58 and we went on their boats many times.”

Stephen says the couple spent time on 58 Fly models owned by friends

Sharly recalls the 58 Fly making a strong impression on them, so they started visualising having their own. Then they began talking details with Thomas Woo of Absolute Marine, which has sold 40 Absolute yachts in the last seven years.

“When we were visiting our friends’ 58, we started looking at the options we wanted for when we moved into our own,” says Sharly, who works in finance. “Thomas gave us a lot of suggestions such as a hard top with an electric sunroof and an extendable sunshade at the back. The price was very reasonable, good value for money.”

The yacht arrived in 2018, just two months after they finally secured a mooring at Aberdeen Boat Club after being on the waiting list for six years. As the 58 Fly was brand-new and a bit bigger than they were used to, they hired a full-time captain and boat boy to drive and maintain the boat.

The couple met in Hong Kong, having both studied abroad

Stephen and Sharly still both drove as often as they could and said an initial challenge was switching from shaft drives to the Volvo Penta IPS system, then in its third generation.

“We weren’t too familiar with IPS, but once you get used to it, it’s easy, especially for the berthing,” Sharly says. “You can choose which side to be when you park because the flybridge helm is on the left and downstairs it’s on the right. Also, the visibility of the lower helm station is really good compared to other boats and I love having a door there because it helps with lines and berthing.”

FAMILY TIME

The family lives in Kowloon Tong, which has good tunnel access to Aberdeen, while in the summer, they sometimes berth the boat at Club Marina Cove for access to Sai Kung. After receiving the 58, they used it regularly, once or twice a week, yet last year they began to use it even more often, up to three or four times a week.

“We go out a lot. From Kowloon Tong, it can sometimes take only 15 minutes to drive to Aberdeen without traffic,” says Stephen. “From Aberdeen, we often cruise to Deep Water Bay or if we’re in Sai Kung, we love going to Tsam Chuk Wan. It’s a different experience in Sai Kung to the South Side.”

Sharly studied in Australia and New Zealand, Stephen studied in the US

Like many in Hong Kong, Stephen and Sharly have enjoyed many more overnight trips since last year and their favourite activities include fishing at night, including for squid in May and June.

The whole family enjoys swimming and playing with their water toys, which include a Sea-Doo jetski, paddleboard, kayaks and an inflatable Fiesta Island, which is ideal for kids – and adults armed with champagne.

“We do a lot of overnights,” says Sharly. “Our kids love it and it’s like going on a vacation. The kids love kayaking and paddling. All of us love the Fiesta – we let the kids go first and have fun, then once they’ve finished, the adults go in and drink our ‘bubbles’.”

Although it’s typically only the four of them who stay on overnight trips, Stephen and Sharly often invite their parents, brothers and sisters for the day and hook up with other boat-owning friends, many of whom have an Absolute.

The pair are regular visitors to the Cannes Yachting Festival

“Sometimes when we take my family and Sharly’s family, we can have 12 or 16 people on board in the day,” Stephen says. “Sometimes, friends join us and we all park together. It’s a fun crowd.”

HONG KONG FRIENDLY

Sharly enjoys hosting family and friends, saying the 58 Fly is ideal for entertaining in Hong Kong, where many enjoy the outdoors but not direct sunlight.

Just the flybridge itself has three separate social areas. Add in the large foredeck, the covered aft cockpit and the swim platform, and there’s plenty of places for cocktails on board, once you’ve had enough of floating in the Fiesta.

Says Sharly: “The extra cover on the flybridge is really useful, especially for me and my friends because there are many places in the shade we can go when it’s happy hour! It’s really good for my female friends, who don’t want too much sun. We have so many areas on the boat we can hang out.”

Sharly says the flybridge offers multiple areas for entertaining

As the couple have become comfortable driving the 58-footer by themselves, they’ve only had a boat boy look after the yacht since last year and don’t employ a captain anymore. Viewing the boat’s design from both the perspective of owners and crew, they highlight the engine-room access from the aft crew cabin as another key feature.

“A lot of other boats this size don’t have this and they need to enter the engine room from a cockpit hatch, which is not ideal if you have guests,” he says.

“Overall, it’s easy for us to take the boat out. Most of the time I drive while Sharly looks after the kids. Our only regret is not ordering the sky anchor (Dynamic Positioning System). When we ordered the boat, we thought a captain would drive the boat most of the time, but now we’re doing it all ourselves.”

As happy as the couple are with the 58 Fly, it doesn’t stop them casting an eye around for another yacht in the future. They’ve already taken a strong fancy to Absolute’s new Navetta 64, which debuted in late 2020. The model has already received over a year’s worth of orders due to many innovations including the option of an interior beach club in the stern that can convert to a waterfront cabin.

The large swim platform is a hub of daytime activity and another area for drinks

“We like the Navetta 64. We love the beach club. It’s the first time we’ve seen this,” Stephen says. “One day, if we upgrade our boat, we’d like to use it in and around Italy before it comes over to Hong Kong. We’ve been to the Cannes show many times and we love this part of Europe.”

After all, Stephen has a track record of upgrading within a brand. He may have given up his 430 Spider to get his first boat, but that didn’t stop him from buying another black Ferrari last summer, this time a 488 Spider, packing over 600hp and a top speed of 325kmh.

It seems like you can take the boy out of the sports car, but you can’t take the sports car out of the boy.
