Princess models debut in Thailand

Princess models debut in Thailand

Regional dealer Boat Lagoon Yachting enjoyed an exciting start to the year following the arrival of five Princess yachts including two Y78s making their debuts in Pattaya and Phuket.

The first Princess Y78 in Phuket

Boat Lagoon Yachting has had a busy start to the year following the arrival in Thailand of five hulls from Princess’s line of Y Class Motor Yachts – a 72, Y75, two Y78s and an 88. The Y78s are making model premieres in both Pattaya and Phuket respectively, the 72 was handed over to a client in Pattaya, while the Y75 and 88 were delivered to Phuket, home of Boat Lagoon Yachting’s headquarters.

The Y78 is one of Princess’s new-look fleet of Y Class yachts and made its international debut at the Southampton International Boat Show in September 2019. The owner’s stateroom is midships on the lower deck and has a private staircase, while forward are three guest cabins all with ensuite bathrooms.

The Y75 is one of the most successful models in the region, with a flybridge that has space aft to fit a crane and store a tender. Another highly popular model is the Princess 88, which is the fifth hull of the model to be sold in Phuket and features an automated balcony by the saloon.

Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director of Boat Lagoon Yachting, said: “As the understanding of yachting develops and become more popular in Asia, people are seeking out quality and luxurious boats. The Y Class has always been popular with our clients in Southeast Asia seeking luxury motor yachts.

“Each model within the range has been designed to suit longer journeys, with guest comfort and exceptional seakeeping a priority. We have seen high demand for Princess Yachts, the leading British luxury yacht brand in recent years. The brand’s reputation for design, engineering and manufacturing excellence has earned global appeal, especially in this region.”

Boat Lagoon Yachting is Princess’s oldest distributor in Asia, having represented the builder since 1994. The company is headquartered in Phuket Boat Lagoon, where it has comprehensive service facilities, while it also has a major office in Singapore.

The 72 Motor Yacht was handed over in Pattaya

“With the travel realities we are facing, our owners and many other people are looking forward to starting their boating adventures, where they get to enjoy the peacefulness and tranquillity at sea while being surrounded with their loved ones in a safe environment. It is a great time to explore and rediscover Singapore and Thailand, in privacy and comfort,” Vrit said.

“Thailand is one of the best places to experience life on a yacht. Home to 1,430 islands with beautiful beaches and cruising grounds, it is the perfect yachting destination. Boaters can discover the Similan Islands and the virtually untouched Andaman Islands. Similarly, for many Singaporeans, cruising to the Southern Islands is probably the closest to a bona fide vacation these days where you feel like you are overseas in an island getaway with a tranquil, laidback environment.”

New Jeanneau Yachts 60 is option-rich

Designed by Philippe Briand and Winch Design, the Jeanneau Yachts 60 strengthens the French builder’s flagship sailboat range and offers an enormous range of options, especially in the interior.

The Jeanneau Yachts 60 is designed by Philippe Briand

Jeanneau has launched the first two units of its Jeanneau Yachts 60, which succeeds the 57 in the French builder’s flagship range of sailboats that also includes the 51, 54 and 64 models.

The 60 is scheduled for media sea trials in late April and appearances at the Palma International Boat Show (June 3-6), Cannes Yachting Festival (September 7-13) and US Sailboat Show in Annapolis (October 14-18). The first unit in Asia-Pacific is slated to arrive by the end of the year.

A sprayhood is among exterior options along with an arch and hardtop

Measuring 59ft 11in with the bowsprit, the twin-helmed yacht features a new 57ft 1in fibreglass hull by Philippe Briand and an interior by Winch Design. Numerous exterior options include an arch, hardtop and sprayhood for extra protection, exterior galley, releasable forestay and furling mast. There are four mast options spanning three sizes, as well as four rigging choices.

The innovative deck layout features an inverted bow, a hull chine, integrated bowsprit, high sheer line and Jeanneau’s signature step-free, angled side decks for easy movement around the boat. The longitudinal aft garage is to port and can store a 4ft 11in dinghy.

The port side of the saloon and full-beam galley

Downstairs, the saloon makes the most of the yacht’s 17ft beam and features U-shaped seating and adjustable table to port, while the full-beam galley forward is a distinguishing feature.

There’s a choice of three to six cabins related to the layout options available in four areas – starboard saloon, aft accommodation, forward accommodation and forepeak.

The saloon’s starboard options include a sofa and chart table

The saloon’s starboard options include a sofa and chart table, a sofa and pullman cabin, or an open-plan version that could include two armchairs. The aft accommodation options comprise a full-beam owner’s cabin or two cabins – a double to starboard and a smaller port cabin with bunks.

The forward accommodation has greater headroom than the aft cabins and can be designed as a full-beam master suite or two symmetrical doubles.

Options include a full-beam master suite aft (above) or forward (below)

For the latter, the dividing bulkhead can slide into a forward storage space and the port bed can be transformed into a sofa for an alternative version of an owner’s suite. The forepeak can be used as an extra guest cabin, skipper cabin or sail locker.

Two varieties of wood are offered in the interior: open-pore varnished teak or open-pore varnished light oak, each with matching floorboards. The upholstery selection includes five new fabrics and five leathers by Foglizzo. Three different cabin styles are available – Sand, Macchiato and Royal Blue – to personalise the headboards and trim around the beds.

The first Jeanneau Yachts 60 in Asia-Pacific could arrive in late 2021

Annual production is estimated to start at about 10-15 units in the first year before increasing to between 15-35 depending on demand.

Ferretti Group and Sanlorenzo have announced the creation of a 50/50 joint venture, NewCo, to take over Perini Navi, which was declared bankrupt by the Court of Lucca on January 29.

Through NewCo, Ferretti Group and Sanlorenzo have expressed their interest in making an offer to acquire the trademarks, assets and Italian operations of Perini Navi – if necessary, with a business unit lease agreement – to ensure a swift recovery of production activities and the maintenance of employment levels.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “This is an important day for the Italian yachting industry, for the employees of Perini Navi and for their families, ensuring in this way that their passion, experience and unique skills will continue to be protected. As will the Perini Navi supply chain, which is made up of numerous suppliers who will be reassured and whose peace of mind will be restored by today’s safeguards.

“At Ferretti Group, we are always on the lookout for excellence and capabilities to integrate with our own, and often we find them in Italy. We are confident our commitment will translate into further growth that benefits the local area and raises the profile of the Italian yacht industry still further.

“I would also like to emphasise the historical importance of the alliance with Sanlorenzo, reflecting the new spirit of collaboration sweeping through Italy: a positive broadening of our horizons that will let us seize even more opportunities and deliver even more success.”

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo

Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo, added: “I began my professional career in the yacht industry in Viareggio, in the same place and year in which Perini Navi was starting life a short distance away. That was back in 1983 and since then I’ve always had great admiration for the business model adopted by this remarkable brand: boats with outstanding qualities, built exclusively to order for a limited number of expert owners and connoisseurs.”

Japan’s Kojiro Shiraishi pays tribute to mentor Yukoh Tada after becoming the first Asian skipper to ever finish the Vendée Globe solo race around the world.

Kojiro Shiraishi finished 16th in the Vendée Globe on his IMOCA 60 DMG MORI in an elapsed time of 94 days 21 hours 32 minutes, becoming the first Asian skipper to ever complete the famous non-stop solo race around the world.

“It was truly wonderful and a longer adventure than originally planned, but arriving and seeing so many familiar faces and people was really very heart-warming,” Shiraishi said in Les Sables d’Olonne.

Shiraishi, 53, was inspired by the memory of his mentor Yukoh Tada, the Japanese ocean racing pioneer who won Class 2 in the 1982-83 BOC Challenge round-the-world race but took his own life during the 1990-91 edition.

As a youngster, Shiraishi was so moved by Tada’s exploits that after finding his number in the phone directory, he spent weeks trying to contact him while Tada was working nights as a taxi driver to pay off his racing campaigns. Shiraishi was invited to his house, the pair shared some sake and the youngster’s first sail was with Tada, after which he went on to work as his preparateur.

During Tada’s next BOC Challenge campaign in 1990-91, repeated capsizes and technical failures left him a long way behind the leaders and the 61-year-old took his own life in Sydney. The young Shiraishi was charged with taking Tada’s Okera VIII back to Japan.

Shiraishi’s current IMOCA 60 monohull, launched in September 2019, is his fifth Spirit of Yukoh, each named in the memory of his mentor who was unable to fulfil his own ambition of competing in the Vendée Globe.

“For over 30 years, I have been dreaming of doing this Vendée Globe, ever since Philippe Jeantot invited my master Yukoh Tada to compete in it. It has taken 30 years to complete the circumnavigation and I am proud to have been able to fulfil what Yukoh Tada wanted to do.”

Shiraishi’s first Vendée Globe ended prematurely on December 4, 2016, when he lost the top of the mast and had to retire into Cape Town, pledging to return and complete the Vendée Globe.

Like others in the fleet, Shiraishi started the 2020-21 edition short on solo training and preparation. The only solo race he previously completed on his new VPLP-designed IMOCA 60 was last year’s Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne race, in which he finished 10th.

Shiraishi’s second Vendée Globe didn’t start well, as he spent a week completing major repair to a potentially race-ending tear in his mainsail that occurred just six days after the race start on November 8.

After that, he had to sail cautiously to look after his fragile mainsail, always sailing with one reef in the mainsail. But his patience, positive outlook, mental strength and two decades of ocean racing experience contributed to an accomplished race during which he grew in confidence in his new boat.

“It is a miracle,” he said. “I really didn’t think my mainsail would hold and it’s truly incredible it pulled through and I was able to complete this wonderful adventure. To finish was my primary object objective, but to also please my sponsor, my team and all the fans who have encouraged me is what makes me the proudest.”

Gaudoux looks to “special” Rolex Fastnet

Gaudoux looks to “special” Rolex Fastnet

Despite winning the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race, Didier Gaudoux admits he’s struggling to plan his preparation for this year’s edition, which has over 400 entries.

Didier Gaudoux admits he’s unsure of what his preparation will be like ahead of this year’s edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s flagship event in 2021, which quickly secured a record 400-plus entry list in January.

Gaudoux won the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race overall title (Fastnet Challenge Trophy) on Lann Ael 2 and will return to the race in August on his trusty JND39. On board again will be family members, including his daughter Coralie and possibly son Thomas, as well as veteran Figaro ace Fred Duthil. Lann Ael 2 hasn’t changed apart from a new paint job.

The Frenchman warns that the big unknown at present is the same for everyone. “It will be a very special campaign because we don’t know when we can start to sail and we don’t know what our preparation for the campaign will be. I intend to do a few RORC races if it is possible.”

In 2020, Lann Ael 2 competed in just a few races but made the most of them, winning the IRC class in the Drheam Cup, ahead of Eric Fries’ JPK 11.80 Fastwave 6 and Laurent Charmy’s J/111 SL Energies, both of whom are also due on the start line off Cowes on August 8.

Géry Trentesaux, the 2015 winner on Courrier Du Leon (pictured), is returning aboard Antoine Carpentier’s Class40 Courrier Redman; Photo: Kurt Arrigo/Rolex

That event also provided good preparation, as it started from Cherbourg where this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race will finish for the first time. “It will be a new challenge tactically between the Scilly Islands and Cherbourg with the tide,” Gaudoux said.

While his boat is based in southern Brittany, his crew, especially Duthil, know the complex waters around Cherbourg well. The city is planning for the arrival to include Covid restrictions for the many visitors from the local region.

“A lot of people will be coming and the harbour is very close to the downtown so it will be a special welcome,” Gaudoux said.

Géry Trentesaux won the 2015 overall title on his JPK 10.80 Courrier Du Leon, but this year is returning aboard Antoine Carpentier’s latest generation Mach 40.4 Class40 Courrier Redman, runner-up in this year’s RORC Transatlantic Race.

Alexis Loison and Jean Pierre Kelbert on JPK 10.30 Léon will defend their 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race IRC Two Handed title; Photo: Paul Wyeth/RORC

Alexis Loisin became the race’s first double-handed overall winner with his father Pascal in 2013 aboard their JPK 10.10 Night And Day. He’s back to defend his title in the IRC Two Handed class on board the JPK 10.30 Léon with Jean Pierre Kelbert, proprietor of the successful French Chantier JPK.

Loisin has won IRC Two Handed in three of the last four races and only was displaced into second in 2015 by Kelvin Rawlings and Stuart Childerley on their J/105 Jester, who that year were fourth overall under IRC and top British finishers.

Rawlings and Childerley are back to try their hand again, this time with their newly acquired Sun Fast 3300 Aries.

“We look forward to the new Fastnet course,” Childerley said. “It will be a hard-fought contest all the way to the finish line.”

The big draw is both the heightened competition in IRC Two Handed, with all the podium finishers from the last two races returning including the Sun Fast 3300 Fastrak XII, sailed by Henry Bomby and Hannah Diamond two years ago, and Louis-Marie Dussere’s JPK 10.80 Raging-bee², second and third respectively in 2019. This is bolstered by Two Handed racing being on the Olympic roster for Paris 2024.

“Double-handed sailing continues to inspire and provide a challenge that is complimented by the Rolex Fastnet Race,” concludes Childerley.

Pierre Cardin’s legendary Bubble Palace is for sale. The odd-looking piece of architecture was first built by Antti Lovag for French Industrialist Pierre Bernard, and was inspired by Lovag’s unique ideas of “habitology”. By Abram Yum

If you are looking for a quirky-looking piece of property with a rich provenance, you might just be in luck. The “palais bulles” or aptly named, bubble palace, previously owned by the late fashion maestro, Pierre Cardin is now up for sale. The Théoule-sur-Mer villa covers 1200 sqm and includes 10 bedroom suites, gardens, a swimming pool and an outdoor auditorium with an awe-inspiring view of the Bay of Cannes.

Circular Life

Le Palais Bulles was the brainchild of renowned architect Antti Lovag. The unique bubble architecture, which gives the villa its name, was born of Lovag’s fascination with spherical forms. For him, straight lines were “an aggression against nature”, which does not naturally create symmetrical shapes. He even points out that the range of movement in our arms and legs trace circles. Throughout his career, Lovag dedicated himself to the idea that circles were central to how our lives were carried out. An idea that he dubbed “habitology”. This ideology can be seen in his works from “Maison Gaudet”, to “Villa Roux”, and of course “Le Palais Bulles”. Despite his unique designs, the Hungarian architect’s list of clients is small, owing to his philosophy which has 3 conditions: he does not know what the end product will look like, when it will be completed, or how much it will cost.

Lovag’s approach to architecture revolves around spherical building blocks. Constructed of mesh and rods, each sphere is first rolled into a position deemed appropriate by Lovag and his clients and thereafter, covered with concrete to create the structure. The result of this approach is an oddity that somehow manages to make contemporary architects’ hairs stand on end with its lack of straight edges, while capturing their hearts and minds.

From Pierre To Pierre

Built for Pierre Bernard in 1984 and completed in 1989, the organic form of Le Palais Bulles clings to the rocky cliffs of Massif de l’Esterel and overlooks the expansive Mediterranean Sea. Within its 10 spherical suites, each room is decorated by contemporary artists, lending their influence to Lovag’s quirky design, and adorned with bespoke furniture. While the interior of the Bubble Palace is indeed captivating, the outdoor gardens, ponds, and swimming pool offer a chance to bask in the glorious sunlight of the Mediterranean and appreciate the beauty of mother nature.

Just three years after its completion, the property was acquired by the late Pierre Cardin who often rented it out for parties and events. Cardin’s goal in acquiring the villa was to create his own piece of paradise where he could “exhibit the works of contemporary designers and artists”. Indeed, the architectural beauty of Le Palais Bulles which so enchanted Pierre Cardin formed the backdrop of numerous fashion photographs. It even played host to more than one Cannes Film Festival after party.

Before his passing last December, the late fashion designer’s Bubble Palace was put up for sale by Christie’s International Real Estate in 2015 but has yet to be sold. While the real estate company says that the price is only available upon inquiry, the value of Le Palais Bulles is estimated to be in the range of $335 million, making it one of the world’s most expensive homes. Following Cardin’s passing, the world’s eyes are currently fixed upon this eccentric piece of property, awaiting news on its next owner.

For more information regarding this property, head over to Christie’s International Real Estate official website here.

The first Custom Line Navetta 30 shows there are beautiful ways to update nautical tradition without turning your back on it. By Clare Mahon.

The Custom Line Navetta 30 has an overall length of 28.4m

The Navetta 30 is Custom Line’s first project with an exterior by Filippo Salvetti and interiors by the world-famous Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (ACPV) architectural studio, both firms giving a special imprint to the brand’s new entry model while respecting and updating the line’s heritage.

Successor of the Navetta 28, the 30 has an overall length of just 28.4m and a hull length just under 24m. Yet although the 93-footer is 15ft shorter than the Navetta 33, this wide-body yacht is just 8in narrower, with a hefty beam of 7.3m (24ft).

The Navetta 30 is the first Custom Line with a Filippo Salvetti exterior

Below the waterline, the Ferretti Group’s Engineering department used CFD techniques to develop a tapered hull shape with 30 per cent more volume than the Navetta 28 and better fuel economy.

With the naval architecture arranged, Salvetti began designing the visible parts of the exterior, masking the vertical connection between the decks with strong horizontal lines and continuous expanses of dark tinted glass. It’s an honest, no-nonsense approach that balances interior and exterior, private and convivial spaces in a functional and appealing package.

The Dual Mode Transom creates a large beach club

Boarding the yacht from a tender, the first feature that welcomes you is an aft platform with running boards that make access easy from the stern or either side.

The garage can accommodate a Williams Sportjet 435 tender and a jetski, and the door is fitted with the Ferretti Group’s patented Dual Mode Transom (DMT) that opens to launch the tender and become a beach platform. An innovative new feature is a flap that keeps the garage dry when closed and doubles as a launching and recovery ramp when open.

Stairs lead to the aft cockpit on the main deck

Symmetrical staircases lead up to the aft cockpit, which has a table, chairs and an extra deep couch that can double as a sunbed. Glass doors to the main saloon slide open wide to reveal a space where the designers’ quest for continuity and connection between all areas of the yacht is as immediately apparent as their good taste and painstaking attention to detail.

The saloon is furnished with freestanding pieces that Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel has designed for top Italian furnishing brands such as B&B Italia and Flexform, as well as structural pieces built to ACPV’s designs by Zago, a long-time Ferretti Group collaborator.

Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designed the interior and furnishings

EMBRACING NAUTICAL TRADITION

Because of careful choices of materials, shapes and colours, ‘stylish’ aboard the Navetta 30 never overwhelms ‘nautical’. While you’re always aware you’re in a chic and modern interior, you don’t forget you’re at sea because you’re always surrounded by ocean views and because the interiors maintain a discreetly nautical vibe.

Walls are finished in brushed and textured fibreglass, a boatbuilding material resistant to the elements and easy to maintain. Window and door frames have rounded corners as per nautical tradition and are in natural teak, the timber that best expresses an idea of seafaring life.

The main saloon emphasises natural colours and materials

The midships stairwell to the upper deck is lined in a textured material that recalls carbon-fibre, another boatbuilding staple. Even the floor seems to be a continuation of the caulked teak used on the outer decks until you look more closely and see that it’s teak painstakingly inlaid with a thin strip of wenge – an imitation game that masks luxury as functionality.

Riccardo Menin, an architect and interior designer for Custom Line, says: “Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel chose materials such as natural leather and real hemp cord that would recall the nautical tradition and would age gracefully with time. They wanted the yacht’s interiors to show the signs of the life they have ‘lived,’ not to stay as an untouchable showcase.”

The saloon leads to the galley, upper deck and master suite

At the forward end of the saloon, the portside door leads to the Ernestomeda-designed galley, which includes the crew mess. Protecting the privacy of owners and guests, the galley connects to the crew quarters forward on the lower deck, made up of a captain’s cabin and two with twin bunks, all with ensuite bathrooms.

The saloon’s starboard door leads to a hallway accessing the lower-deck stairs, the day head and the owner’s cabin forward. Like the main saloon, the full-beam owner’s suite gets plenty of natural light and views through large, continuous windows.

The owner’s suite has an office to starboard and huge windows on both sides

The shapes and materials are like the ones used throughout the yacht, but there is added luxury in details such as the bathroom mosaic made of tiny round tiles of recycled glass, an ecologically luxurious material that was created exclusively for this project.

The four guest cabins on the lower deck are all ensuite and comprise two VIPs with inward-facing double beds and two aft-facing twins, one that can convert to a double and be fitted with an additional Pullman bed. All guest cabins have portholes that can be opened to let in fresh air.

UPPER DECKS

The upper deck, accessed from the main saloon or aft cockpit, has a large outdoor area with an oversized teak couch, again purpose-designed for the Navetta 30 by ACPV. A dining table for 10 can fit comfortably in this space, but the showstopper is the spiral staircase in carbon-fibre and teak whose thin chrome balusters are lashed with rope.

The upper-deck saloon and aft deck, which has a 10-seat dining table

The sky lounge and al fresco space are united stylistically not only by the yacht’s characteristic teak flooring but also by teak panels mounted in the ceilings of both areas. Interspersed between the panels are small spotlights, which are used throughout the yacht.

These discreet pinpoints of light were developed for the Navetta 30 by ACPV with Metis Lighting and have a warm, dimming technology that allows owners to adjust them both in brightness and in colour temperature to create a specific mood and atmosphere, whatever the time of day.

The upper deck’s 32sqm ‘sunset lounge’ features furniture by ACPV

The upper deck’s fore area is easy to reach from the port side passage and if the outdoor areas already mentioned aren’t enough, there’s also the sun deck. Set low so that it doesn’t give the Navetta 30 a top-heavy look, the large deck has a second custom couch like the one on the upper deck, a grill, sink and fridge by the mast, and a forward bar for enjoying a sundowner or simply taking in the view from on high.

The bridge is on the upper deck and features six large Simrad touchscreens. Like all Navetta displacement models, the 30 is designed for covering long distances with low fuel consumption and has an impressive range of about 2,000nm at 10 knots. To assure comfort and reduce sound and vibration, the engine room has a ‘floating floor’, while ceilings have extra soundproofing.

The sun deck features a huge sofa aft and a bar area forward

With the Navetta 30, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel has shown that nautical doesn’t have to be predictable and that there’s a happy medium between nautical and style. Their dash of new perspective coupled with Custom Line’s careful attention to fuel efficiency and comfort make the Navetta 30 an important new player on the water today.

The first Excess 11 sailing catamaran in Asia is scheduled to be shown in Yokohama in March and at the Japan International Boat Show in April.

The Excess 11 arrives in Japan

The first Excess 11 in Asia has arrived in Japan, where the model’s regional debut will be held during the Excess Tour in Yokohama from March 20-21. Commissioned by dealer Odyssey Marine, the smallest Excess sailing catamaran is also scheduled to be presented at the Japan International Boat Show from April 15-18.

The Excess 11 is the brand’s smallest model

With an overall length of 37ft 2in (11.33m), the Excess 11 is the brand’s entry model and the only large-scale production catamaran of this size on the market, according to Groupe Beneteau. The twin helm station aft is a signature Excess feature and there’s also a retractable bimini over the cockpit, which features seating on all four sides and a dining table.

The cockpit can be covered by a retractable bimini

The interior has a galley and an L-shaped sofa with table, while the lower deck has two bathrooms and the options of three or four cabins. The unit in Japan is a three-cabin version, which has an expansive owner’s cabin in the starboard hull.

The brand’s first unit in Asia-Pacific was an Excess 12 delivered last year to Australia, where it was displayed by dealer Flagstaff Marine at October’s Boating Rendez-Vous in Sydney along with Beneteau and Lagoon yachts. A flagship Excess 15 was then delivered to New Zealand through dealer 36 Degrees Brokers.

The hull of the first Amels 60 superyacht has arrived at Damen Yachting’s outfitting yard in the Netherlands. The hull was constructed at Damen Yachting’s hull-building facility in Gdynia, next to Gdansk on Poland’s north coast.

One of three Amels 60 yachts now under construction, the 197-footer with an exterior by Espen Øino is scheduled for delivery to an experienced Amels owner in spring 2022 and represents a new generation of Limited Editions yachts.

The first Amels 60 will feature an owner-specified metallic Pebble Grey hull with Matterhorn White and Super Jet Black superstructure. The 830GT yacht’s features include a huge open sun deck, 9m luxury tender, hybrid power and propulsion technology.

Amels has delivered more than 40 Limited Editions yachts from 2007, all with exterior designs by Tim Heywood. Øino was appointed to design the new Amels 60 and was delighted to see photos of the first hull.

The yacht is scheduled for delivery in spring 2022

“It’s certainly nice to see some pictures of the hull. A lot of people have complimented us on her looks. She looks beautiful, like what I had in my head,” Øino said.

“The thing with modelling in 3D is that you get few surprises, but still nothing replaces the first time you go on board. When you go on board, it comes alive and you know if the spaces feel right, so I’m looking forward to visiting the shipyard.”

Winch Design is creating the bespoke interior with Damen Yachting

Damen Yachting’s interior team and Winch Design are creating the bespoke interiors. Jim Dixon, Director Yachts & Aviation at Winch Design, says the custom interiors capture the feel and style of a relaxed family home on the water, promoting a ‘calm atmosphere and involuntary relaxation’.

“For the most part, we have used pure and natural materials to emphasise the relaxed ‘home at the beach’ spirit of the interior,” Dixon says. “However, we have added layers of surface interest to materials such as stones and timbers to create unique and tactile finishes.”

The Poole shipyard has worked with MTU to develop hybrid propulsion for its 42M and 50M Ocean models, with Van Oossanen developing the world’s most efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form for the larger superyacht.

Sunseeker has collaborated with Rolls-Royce to offer MTU’s first series-production hybrid propulsion system on its two largest Superyacht designs, the 50M Ocean and 42M Ocean, which are among the shipyard’s new generation of superyachts.

MTU’s integrated hybrid system for the 50M Ocean includes onboard generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, and control and monitoring systems, and can be expanded

on a modular basis. It offers six operating modes from all-electric for silent, emission-free cruising, through to use of the twin 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines.

Modes include the automated ‘smart hybrid’ and ‘charge hybrid’ that enable all power sources to be used as required. In ‘electric’, propulsion and on-board power can be supplied by the generators, optimising fuel consumption and comfort for long and overnight passages up to 10.2 knots. ‘Silent’ uses power solely from the batteries, offering nearly three hours of propulsion or seven hours of on board power in silent anchoring mode, with no emissions.

Van Oossanen has designed a Fast Displacement Hull Form for the 50M Ocean

Sunseeker and MTU UK – which have worked together for two decades – laid the basis for the hybrid propulsion system back in 2010, with tests carried out on a prototype yacht. Sales Director Sean Robertson, who has worked Sunseeker since 1986, says: “The way owners are using their boats continues to evolve. Efficiency and noise reduction are now as important as features and volume.”

For the 50M Ocean, which will be built in metal by ICON Yachts, the yard worked with Van Oossanen Naval Architects on an innovative Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). The hybrid hull’s slenderness and special form produces a very low wave profile over the full speed range and was ranked by the Wolfson Unit as the most efficient in its database, a lofty accolade considering the UK-based firm has carried out towing tank tests on about 1,200 hull forms since 1968.

Sunseeker says the FDHF concept improves the efficiency of a vessel by 15-20 per cent compared to conventional displacement and semi-displacement hull forms, representing a significant reduction in consumption, emissions and operating costs.

The 50M Ocean is also offered with Hull Vane technology

The FDHF is also offered with Hull Vane® technology. Positioned below the stern, the patented fixed-foil, fuel-saving device influences the stern wave pattern, creating a forward-orientated lifting force that lowers the pitch motion and running trim. The combined effect of the FDHF fitted with the Hull Vane reduces fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent in total, according to Sunseeker.

Furthermore, the yard has been working with technical partners to ensure solutions are in place to implement selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on its larger superyachts to drastically reduce harmful emissions.

However, the bulk of Sunseeker’s production is across its Manhattan (52-68), Predator (50-74), Sport Yacht (65-74) and Yacht (76-100) ranges, and although its history is steeped in fast, high-performance boats, there’s increasing demand for efficiency and other factors from new owners.

Sunseeker’s new models include the Manhattan 68

Douglas Culverwell, Sunseeker’s Regional Business Manager for Asia, says: “Sunseeker has always offered a diverse product range, both in type – compare the Predator and Yacht lines, for instance – and performance. However, performance is increasingly being used to describe attributes other than speed and agility. Now, quietness, lack of vibration, fuel economy and reduced emissions are also a measure of performance.”

Its hull designs vary between model ranges, from out-and-out dynamic performance – witness the 62-knot Hawk 38 unleashed in 2019 – to long-range cruising and everything in-between.

“Hull design is of paramount importance to us and over the decades we’ve developed and refined an easily driven, soft-riding, deep-V hull design,” Culverwell said. “In certain models, this is optimised to offer lower resistance at lower cruising speeds, while other models focus on higher planing speeds.

“However, Sunseeker has also designed and developed semi-displacement and displacement hull forms that offer even greater endurance and efficiency with less power than their smaller stablemates. The 42M Ocean and 50M Ocean were designed with this firmly in mind.”
