Regional dealer Simpson Marine is eyeing more Lagoon 55 sales in Asia following the model’s successful Asia premiere in Hong Kong. By Nicholas Kunz.

The Asia premiere of the Lagoon 55 was held in Hong Kong, with dealer Simpson Marine hosting the regional debut, which joins a series of recent yachting events in the region after a quiet couple of years.

The Lagoon 55 event was held at Aberdeen Boat Club’s Middle Island clubhouse, a reclusive setting accessible only by ferry or boat.

The model’s Asia premiere proved popular

The clubhouse served as an ideal venue as guests could interact without restrictions, plus take a tour of the newly arrived sailing catamaran, which provided nice views of the scenic landscape surrounding the island.

Lagoon, the world’s leading pleasure catamaran builder, unveiled the first 55 at its facility in Bordeaux in March 2021 and the model was profiled in YACHT STYLE Issue 59 (click for Review).

The foredeck includes an integrated sunshade

The Lagoon 55 was initially targeted at owners of 45ft-plus models not yet ready to make the leap to the brand’s Sixty 5 or Seventy 7 sailing catamarans but wanting to enjoy all the upgrades in space and finishing that the 55 has to offer.

Asia’s first Lagoon 55 was sold by Simpson Marine last year to a client in China and the hull will remain in Hong Kong until November, when the boat is scheduled to be delivered to Guangdong province.

“The Lagoon 55 has a lot of outdoor and indoor social areas suitable for big groups of people and in China, like in much of Asia, people like to be on their boat with family and friends,” said Ewa Stachurska, Group Marketing Director at Simpson Marine, Asia’s biggest yacht dealer.

“In addition, each of the main outdoor areas have a wet station to prepare food, which is important as dining and entertaining is important for our clients. People love to enjoy meals together.”

The Lagoon 55 offers an “an open terrace on the sea”,

The 55 also holds special significance for the brand as it’s the same name as the first-ever Lagoon catamaran, launched in 1987. The model succeeded the Lagoon 52, but is a completely new model in size, design, features and finish.

At 54ft 4in in length, the 55 is over 2ft longer than the 52, while its 29ft 6in beam makes it almost 6ft or 25 per cent wider.

The cockpit offers alfresco dining

Furthermore, the 55 has a fully developed flybridge, which when combined with a significantly bigger rig and the overall increase in volume, means it’s over 23 per cent heavier than the 52, so it’s a sizeable offering.

The 55’s most distinguishing feature is arguably its redesign of the aft cockpit into what Lagoon calls “an open terrace on the sea”, inspired by motor yachts, while other upgrades include a foredeck with C-shaped sofa/sunpad, integrated table and foldable sunshade.

The interior is by Italy’s Nauta Design

“Lagoon is always pushing the limits of comfort by adding sun pads wherever they can, on the foredeck, the flybridge and the cockpit,” Stachurska said. “All the clients love to spend relaxing time onboard, so the design of the aft cockpit facing the sea is another big selling point.”

As shown by the model’s sale and its popular regional premiere in Hong Kong, Simpson Marine believes Greater China and Southeast Asia are ideal markets for the 55.

“In China, the Lagoon brand is very famous. The brand has a very strong reputation and a lot of trust. Lagoon catamarans are popular in China, where there’s a lot of space in the marinas and a lot of facilities,” said Stachurska, who has worked for Simpson Marine since 2015.

“We also have another Lagoon 55 coming to Singapore and further interest, while even today, we can see that we’ve had a lot of clients coming to visit the 55.”

In a further refresh of its mid-sized models, the Lagoon 51 was launched earlier this year, with Simpson Marine already securing two sales, to Taiwan and Thailand.

The 60 Sunreef Power

Poland’s Sunreef Yachts will stage the Middle East premiere of the 60 Sunreef Power at the Abu Dhabi International Boat Show, which will be held from November 24-27.

The luxury power catamaran will be on display at stand CD-01 within the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre’s ADNEC Marina, where Sunreef staff will welcome the visitors throughout the four-day show.

The 60 Sunreef Power is the entry-level model for Sunreef’s modern range of power cats, which also include the 70, 80 and 100 models. The 60-footer has a beam of over 35ft, large entertaining areas in the cockpit, saloon, foredeck and flybridge, with up to six guest cabins plus crew quarters in the hulls.

Sunreef has an increasing presence in the UAE, where it has a new Middle East office in Dubai and is developing a new production facility in Ras Al Khaimah.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Mayla Yacht is staging the world premiere of its Mayla Fortyfour at the Abu Dhabi show, where the company will present the model at stand O-070.

The Fortyfour has been developed with two configurations: full electric or range-extended hybrid. Operating with twin dual-core electric motors, coupled with high-tech competition inverters, it delivers a total of 1200kW (over 1600hp) and 4800Nm of instantaneous torque.

In its full electric version, the yacht is equipped with a 500kWh custom-designed Lithium-ion battery pack with an innovative cooling system, with the yacht’s range exceeding 70nm. The range-extended hybrid version supplements the 400kWh battery capacity with a 300kW, e-fuel compatible diesel auxiliary power unit to extend the range over 270nm while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

The cockpit seating and interior layout can be adapted to each owner’s needs, while the layout includes include a spacious cabin that can sleep two adults and two children, plus a garage for a jetski or tender. The interior and cockpit seats are covered with marine-grade Alcantara® and are offered in a wide variety of colours.

The Fortyfour features a Petestep®-patented hull design. By reorienting the spray beneath the hull and towards the stern, Petestep®-engineered hull deflectors allow energy savings of up to 35 per cent, lower slamming by up to 50 percent, increase stability and reduce noise compared to conventional stepped hulls.

Lürssen and the Ahoy Club are co-presenting Coral Ocean at the 63rd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 26-30), with the 73m superyacht fresh from a three-year refit.

Designed by the late Jon Bannenberg and originally known as Coral Island, the yacht was one of the shipyard’s largest projects at the time of her launch in 1994 and is “one of the most iconic Lürssen superyachts ever built”, according to the German builder.

Following a change of ownership in 2019, Coral Ocean underwent an extensive refit that was completed this year ahead of her showcase at the five-day Fort Lauderdale show.

“Together with the Ahoy Club, Lürssen is pleased to present a yacht that is in such exceptionally good condition, proof that a quality yacht can retain its value even after so many years,” Lürssen stated.

The Lagoon Escapade Thailand returned to the calendar for the first time since 2019, with a large fleet of the French builder’s sailing catamarans cruising around Phang Nga Bay for the three-day, two-night event in mid-October.

The diverse fleet was made up of a Lagoon 620, Lagoon 560, two Lagoon 52Fs, Lagoon 450, Lagoon 421, three Lagoon 42s, two Lagoon 400s, a Lagoon 40 and a Lagoon 380.

Organised by Simpson Marine, Lagoon’s long-time dealer, the Escapade started on Phuket’s northeast coast and included overnight stops in Koh Yao Noi in the middle of Phang Nga Bay and Ao Thalane in Krabi province.

The fleet first assembled at Ao Po Grand Marina, which hosted a captains’ brief and a welcome reception. It was overcast as the flotilla headed out from the marina, but as Simpson Marine led the fleet into Phang Nga Bay, the sky cleared as the fleet sailed into Koh Roi for an afternoon of leisure activities.

After lunch and some fun with the water toys, the fleet sailed on to Koh Yao Noi where they anchored for a relaxing wind-down barbecue dinner on the beach. Guests were treated to dinner and dancing, while having the opportunity to bond with fellow Lagoon owners.

The second day continued with a sail to Hong Island in Krabi province, where guests enjoyed another leisurely afternoon of fun in the sun with kayaks, inflatables and water scooters. A professional photography team was also present to capture the ‘fun in the sun’.

In the evening, guests were treated to a beautiful red-blue-and-white themed buffet dinner at Melina’s Villas, where Lagoon owners, family and friends socialised, played volleyball on the beach and danced the night away with French-inspired tunes. A special fire show was also prepared as a surprise, and it was a spectacular show that captivated the guests.

The guests had a great time and lucky owners walked away with prizes for ‘Best Dressed Male’, ‘Best Dressed Female’, ‘Best Navigated Boat’, ‘Best Presented Boat’ and ‘Best Water Toy User’, which was a great way to end the evening’s festivities.

Growing up in the world’s largest archipelago, I know the importance of marine conservation first hand. Our oceans are the source of life and a strong foundation to create an economy for millions,” she said.

“We must protect our oceans and work towards the goal of having 30 per cent of it protected by 2030. I hope Indonesia can be a leading example for these Marine Protected Areas. With community outreach at the core of her mission, Thian strives to build awareness on coastal conservation through beach clean-ups, educational workshops and events.

“Personally, I think the ocean plays a pivotal part of our lives, as the ocean provides so much of our livelihood. I truly believe protecting our coasts and marine environment will be a key pillar in tackling climate change,” Thian said.

“I hope to see greater unity among ASEAN nations in driving protective policies against illegal fishing and waste disposal in our environment, and hope different communities can collaborate even further to drive scalable impact. Blue Water EduFest is an amazing platform for like-minded, passionate people to get together to share and collaborate, united through our love of the ocean.”

Anniversario celebrates Riva heritage – and auctions for a good cause

Riva’s new models in 2022 include the Anniversario, a limited-edition model celebrating the shipyard’s 180th birthday, with one hull reserved to raise funds for a UNICEF fund spearheaded by David Beckham.

The 33ft Anniversario is among Riva’s many new models launched in 2022, along with the 130’ Bellissima, 102’ Corsaro Super, 76’ Bahamas Super and the El-Iseo, the prototype electric version of the 27ft Iseo.

At this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, an Anniversario was displayed outside the main entrance, while the other four models were inside in Vieux Port making their world premieres in the water.

However, the Anniversario’s performance at sea is impressive, with an electronically controlled two-speed gearbox and two 370hp Yanmar 8 LV engines combining for a top speed of 40.5 knots and a range of 155 miles at 36 knots.

The Anniversario was built specifically to honour Riva’s 180th anniversary (click to read special feature) and is being produced in a limited-edition run of 18, representing the number of decades since the brand was born in 1842.

Ferretti Group, though, has reserved one unit of the 18 for a good cause, with an Anniversario currently being auctioned online to raise funds for 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund.

The proceeds will go to UNICEF’s work in El Salvador including creating safe spaces for children to learn and play, as well as strengthen child-protection services and make them more accessible. The silent auction is open until February 16, 2023 (for more details, visit http://www.ferrettigroupforunicef.com or email ferrettigroupforunicef@ferrettigroup.com).

Beckham was among the guests of honour at Riva’s 180th anniversary party in Venice in June, when the first Anniversario was unveiled on the Grand Canal in front of the Riva Lounge at the Gritti Palace. The brand-new model was displayed beside an Aquarama, a model launched 60 years ago in 1962 and produced until 1996.

Its spiritual successor, the Aquariva, was launched in 2001 and is still in production. In fact, the 33ft Aquariva provides the basic architecture of the Anniversario, while the colours, materials, details and décor are a soft tribute to the historic Aquarama.

Like all Riva models since 1994, the Anniversario was designed by Officina Italiana Design founders Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, who worked with Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

There are also details that make the Anniversario more than just the sum of its influences. An innovative Metallic Brown was created exclusively for the Anniversario and is juxtaposed with gloss-varnished mahogany. The colour scheme includes contrasts between steel, used for various details and trim, and classic Riva aquamarine alternating with optical white on all the leather upholstery.

The stern platform is concealed by the streamlined design of the hull sides. The boat’s profile is enhanced by the aquamarine waterline, which leads into the white antifouling and pays tribute to the Aquarama, as does the name of the model written in same lettering style as the famous wooden boats of the 1960s.

Also echoing the style of the Aquarama, the protective steel bow cap is joined by the lateral search lights with their classic steel bracket. Adding another touch of style and modernity to the silhouette are side handrails graced with a steel base clad in a refined mahogany fascia.

Riva, Anniversario, launch, anniversary, 180, David Beckham, UNICEF, El Salvador, auction, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Yanmar, Aquariva, Aquarama, Sergio Beretta, Piero Ferrari, mahogany, gloss, aquamarine, white, leather, steel

The entire aft section is occupied by the engine compartment hidden below the classic sun pad, which is upholstered with outdoor leather in alternating aquamarine and white colours.

The same leather is used to upholster both the cockpit and the below-deck area. This special type of leather is waterproof, withstands marine conditions and can be used at sea.

Designed for functionality and comfort, the cockpit has a new design featuring a large U-shaped sofa and a central table seating up to eight people. The table has an up-down mechanism so the space can easily be transformed into one big sunbathing area.

Another innovative feature is the design of the mahogany cabinetry, which is integrated into the lower part of the sofa and includes storage and lifestyle accessories. The entire area can be sheltered by the distinctive bimini top.

Riva, Anniversario, launch, anniversary, 180, David Beckham, UNICEF, El Salvador, auction, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Yanmar, Aquariva, Aquarama, Sergio Beretta, Piero Ferrari, mahogany, gloss, aquamarine, white, leather, steel

The bow area is run through with Riva details. In the helm station, the dashboard includes two 12-inch digital displays and integrated navigation instruments. Aquarama-inspired vintage features abound, like the Vienna straw storage pocket with steel trim behind the driver’s seat.

The foredeck is clad entirely in polished mahogany planking. Continuing the tradition of hand craftsmanship, all the wooden parts of Anniversario are protected by the Sarnico-based yard’s famous 24 coats of varnish. The centrally positioned steel casing adds a sumptuously elegant accent to the deck, as well as housing the navigation lights.

Riva, Anniversario, launch, anniversary, 180, David Beckham, UNICEF, El Salvador, auction, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Yanmar, Aquariva, Aquarama, Sergio Beretta, Piero Ferrari, mahogany, gloss, aquamarine, white, leather, steel

Below deck, two deck portholes inspired by the Aquarama, one on either side, allow natural light, while the leather upholstery has an aquamarine and white colour scheme that matches the ceiling.

A year after the historic Meyer Werft shipyard launched Meyer Yachts at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, the brand has unveiled the 210m second spectacular yacht concept, TWO10.

Meyer, Werft, Yachts, Germany, TWO10, 210, metre, megayacht, superyachts, concept

Like the ONE50, currently in build, the TWO10 will feature sustainable propulsion solutions as Meyer aims to build “the greenest superyachts in the world”.

Meyer, Werft, Yachts, Germany, TWO10, 210, metre, megayacht, superyachts, concept

The profile of the TWO10 is kept flat, although the decks illustrate the yacht’s enormous size. Like the ONE50, the TWO10 relies on green propulsion solutions, for example with fuel cells and battery systems.

Drones can be used for passenger transport on the helipad in the bow area and charged directly on the yacht with the green electricity generated onboard. Due to the generous space available, there’s also room for a complete tennis court, which is fenced in by a fine-mesh net during play.

Column: Wave goodbye to stress with the ‘blue gym’

In collaboration with Professor Charles Spence, AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings explains in a Column for YACHT STYLE why the ‘blue gym’ provides the ideal well-being workout.

The emotional and physical benefits of being out in nature have been long documented, but a new academic study claims that the shimmering sights and sounds of a body of water are far better for us than any green space.

With the average person spending 90 per cent of their life indoors, the need to fuel up on the social, cognitive, emotional and physical health benefits of the great outdoors has never been greater. Combating work burnout and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), both of which can cause anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, is increasingly important.

In our post-pandemic, hybrid work-from home lifestyles, going for a walk or run in the countryside, a hike or even a stroll in your local park are simple ways to get outdoors.

However, Professor Charles Spence, from Oxford University’s Crossmodal Research Laboratory, believes there’s an even greater prize out there. The professor, commissioned by coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel, collated his findings from 20 separate research papers on health and wellbeing.

Further, Professor Spence assessed peer-written studies (including by marine biologist Dr Wallace Nichols) on the overall health benefits of living near green space all over the world, the benefits of exercise that involve water, and the effects of using less technology while on the water.

The results, as adjudged by Professor Spence, are definitive. Swapping green space for blue space means people can supercharge their senses and get the ultimate wellbeing workout, something he calls the ‘blue gym effect’.

Professor Spence, in his new paper entitled Multisensory Well-being and Boating, states: “So-called blue space has even greater health and well-being benefits than green space. While the effect is often considered in terms of vision, there is a growing awareness of just how important the sounds of water and wildlife are to the beneficial effects of nature.

“The results of research conducted in national parks across North America revealed that the sounds of water had the biggest positive effect on health and positive affect outcomes. Water sounds have also been shown to provide an effective foil to the stress-inducing anthropogenic noise of urban, typically transport, activities.”

Away from the sound of water itself, associated sounds of the coast and boating also have strong positive connections. The sound of a spinnaker rattling in the breeze, the wind in the sails and the buzz of a powerboat motor starting up are all referenced by Professor Spence.

“Some have even gone so far as to suggest that the rhythmical sounds of waves crashing on the beach remind us of the sound we heard first in life when we were in the womb,” he says.

“Layered with the sight and sounds, the impact of the smells of nature and being close to water on our mental and physical well-being is tangible. Here, in particular, there appears to be benefits of ocean air (ozone) from being close to sea, with negative ions being given off by large bodies of water, such as at the beach.

Professor Charles Spence, Multisensory Well-being and Boating, Oxford University, Crossmodal Research Laboratory, AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, blue, gym, sail, outdoors, study, water, column, Yacht Style, dimethyl-sulphide, DMS, Matt Anzardo, marine biologist, Dr Wallace Nichols

“Ocean air and its ions are probably more beneficial for us physiologically than the tangy smell of the sea. The latter is caused by the release of dimethyl-sulphide (DMS) from the breakdown of bacteria, and may be linked to psychological benefits due to its association with happy, healthy memories.

“Being by the beach has restorative and sleep-enhancing functions, as was well understood by some Victorian doctors who would often send their patients off to the coast to recuperate. The human immune system likely also benefits from increased exposure to biodiversity, to microorganisms in bacteria, protozoa and helminths, when out in nature.

“One of the simplest, not to mention most effective, ways to reduce the working days lost every year due to stress, depression or anxiety is to get out into nature – better still if we can get out onto the water.”

The difference between passively going to the sea or to a lake, versus being out on the water, was another area explored by Spence as he sought to understand the best wellbeing workout. With boat sales on the rise over the last few years and recreational boating an increasingly popular activity, those lucky enough to get out on boats are the biggest beneficiaries.

“The difference between being literally on the water rather than simply being close to it links to increasingly popular notions of ‘embodied cognition’: the basic idea that we think with, and through, our bodies and not just with our brains,” Professor Spence says.

“Being on the water promotes bodily awareness, given we need to pay attention to maintain our balance. It encourages a kind of mindful presence in the activity involved. There is also a very real pleasure associated with our attention being drawn to the bodily senses, such as touch and proprioception. Navigating on the water requires more attention to one’s surroundings than simply walking, an activity we can do on autopilot.”

AkzoNobel’s Yacht Coatings division, which commissioned the study, seeks to empower and support boat owners to tap into ‘that feeling’ – of joy, adrenaline or calm – by getting out on the water to enjoy their boat.

Matt Anzardo, Global Yacht Segment Manager at AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, says: “We all know ‘that feeling’ – the one that sums up the exhilaration and satisfaction you get from spending time on the water. The AkzoNobel team share that love for boating; it’s the foundation of our research, technologies and innovations.

“As well as those sights, sounds and smells that all promote health, we know boat owners want their vessels looking and performing at their best. That’s where we come in, with market-leading, innovative, sustainable and beautifully aesthetic products for all kinds of vessels.”
