Ā

Azimut has unveiled details of its Grande 44M, its largest yacht to date and almost 6m longer than its existing flagship, the Grande Trideck. Five units were sold in advance of Grande 44M’s announcement in late March, with the model’s world premiere scheduled to be held at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival.

Ā

Marco Valle, Azimut-Benetti Group’s CEO, said: ā€œGrande 44M is proof that true innovation anticipates what owners really desire. This is confirmed by the five units sold even before the official presentation of the project, all bought by Azimut owners who understand the shipyard’s values and wish to grow with us.ā€

Ā

A new addition to the Italian builder’s fleet of ā€˜Low Emission Yachts’, the Grande 44M features exterior styling by regular collaborator Alberto Mancini and interiors by m²atelier, which has also worked with the shipyard on its upcoming Grande 30M, expected to debut in 2025.

Ā

Distinctive features include the helm station on the top deck, which allows the upper deck to be used as an owner’s deck including a forward master suite with almost 2m-long windows on either side. Alternatively, the room can be fitted out as a media suite for guests or a dining area. Forward is an outdoor lounge area with a small firepit, offering a cosy space to enjoy the sun set over the water.

Ā

On the aft main deck, the Grande 44M proposes Azimut’s mezzanine deck with sea view terrace that was central to the success of the Grande Trideck. On the Grande 44M, this three-sided ā€˜stage overlooking the sea’ also includes a see-through pool, ā€œwith its plays on transparency that establish continuous contact with the water and generate reflections that give the beach club an even more magical feelā€, Azimut states.

Ā

Grande 44M is also the flagship of the Azimut’s family of Low Emission Yachts, models that offer a reduction of 20-30 per cent in emissions compared to more traditional motor yachts of the same size. The innovative naval platform of Grande 44M is based on a Dual Mode hull, the introduction of the Hull VaneĀ® foil technology and the Mild Hybrid Plus Zero Emission Hotel Mode system.

Ā

Azimut, Azimut-Benetti, R&D, Grande 44M, Grande Trideck, Grand 30M, Alberto Mancini, Marco Valle, m²atelier, Dual Mode hull, Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture, PLANA, Hull Vane, Zero Emission Hotel Mode, Mild Hybrid Plus, Asea Nautica

Ā

The Dual Mode hull, developed by Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture (PLANA) and Azimut’s R&D department, represents the union of two types of conventional hulls. The bow section is typical for fast displacement boats, while from midships to the stern has a chine commonly found on planing hulls. The design results in a hull that allows a considerable reduction in fuel consumption and emissions at every speed range.

Ā

Foil technology is being installed for the first time on an Azimut yacht due to a collaboration between Dutch company Hull Vane and Azimut-Benetti Group’s R&D department. The Hull VaneĀ® carbon wing fitted to the stern of the Grande 44M can suppress the stern wave and generate forward thrust, providing further reduction in overall drag as well as damping of pitch, sway and roll during navigation.

Ā

Azimut, Azimut-Benetti, R&D, Grande 44M, Grande Trideck, Grand 30M, Alberto Mancini, Marco Valle, m²atelier, Dual Mode hull, Pier Luigi Ausonio Naval Architecture, PLANA, Hull Vane, Zero Emission Hotel Mode, Mild Hybrid Plus, Asea Nautica

Ā

The Grande 44M is Azimut’s sixth model that can be fitted with a Zero Emission Hotel Mode system, making it possible to stay at anchor from four-eight hours with the generators off. On the Grande 44M, this technology achieves maximum efficiency in combination with the Mild Hybrid Plus system, a new level of electrification developed by Azimut-Benetti Group in partnership with Asea Nautica.

Ā

According to Azimut, the Mild Hybrid Plus Zero Emission Hotel Mode system is the only solution today that makes it possible to cruise with the generators off and all loads connected, as well as producing a surplus of energy used to recharge the battery pack.

Ā

Building on Damen Yachting’s expertise in the field of spec builds and proven technical platforms, the Xplorer 80 offers configuration options to suit any yachting lifestyle.

Ā

Enrique Tintore, Xplorer Design Manager, said: ā€œThe way the Xplorer has been designed allows for a high level of flexibility to suit any extreme environment or refined landscape. If a helicopter isn’t essential for you, we’ve got many other options for that space. Need a conference room or a seventh guest cabin? Or a separate gym and a high-spec laboratory? We can make that happen.ā€

Ā

Ā

Today’s yachts are so luxurious that a jacuzzi won’t even get a mention, as it’s long since considered a basic. However, it’s not only a yacht’s graceful form and grand furnishings that fascinate. There’s also the propulsion and technical systems, which should be harmonised to maximise performance.

Ā

This is why Rolls-Royce provides all the systems needed to power a yacht, with all of them at the top end of the performance spectrum.

Ā

In line with its ā€˜Bridge to Propeller’ strategy for maritime applications, the business unit Power Systems of Rolls-Royce, mtu propulsion solutions for yachts will include fully integrated bridge and automation systems, engines and highly efficient Pod propulsion, with all interplaying perfectly to assure efficiency.

Ā

Denise Kurtulus, Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: ā€œThe more integrated your propulsion system is, the easier it is to adjust the interplay between the components, best satisfying whatever demands are being made on operation of the vessel.

Ā

ā€œUsing fully integrated systems, we can best meet the different requirements of our customers when operating a vessel. We’re already using artificial intelligence for this purpose, and the trend is increasing.ā€

Ā

Ocean Alexander’s 35R can be fitted with twin mtu engines

Ā

Many of the leading yacht builders in Asia and around the world use mtu engines. Ocean Alexander and Horizon are two of the region’s heavyweights, featuring regularly in the Global Order Book for superyachts. Both Kaohsiung shipyards regularly use mtu across many of their models and benefit from the support and network of Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems under Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia in Singapore.

Ā

Ocean Alexander’s 35R, the 116ft flagship of its Revolution series, can be fitted with mtu’s 2,600bhp 16V 2000 M96L engines for a top speed of 24 knots. Horizon’s FD80, the most successful model in the builder’s popular high-volume fast displacement series, is available with twin 1,600bhp 10V 2000 M96L engines.

Ā

Winnie Huang, Manager of Ocean Alexander, added: ā€œmtu engines live up to their reputation for performance and reliability, while we also benefit from fast support and good service from the Rolls-Royce team that looks after Asia.ā€

Ā

FULLY INTEGRATED BRIDGE

Last September, Rolls-Royce presented its expanded bridge-to-propeller portfolio at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show. The technology includes new bridge and automation solutions.

Ā

A fully integrated bridge is a central point of interaction for the captain, where not only all the data from the propulsion system is collected but also the operating data from all the ship’s auxiliary and navigation equipment can be collected and the equipment operated.

Ā

Ā

ā€œThe complexity of on-board systems is increasing due to different customer requirements and new regulations, with hybrid and electric propulsion systems, exhaust after-treatment systems, alternative fuels and so on,ā€ Kurtulus said.

Ā

ā€œHowever, our integrated bridge represents a perfect infrastructure, providing a single point of access to all information in a structured and efficient way. In the future, the same infrastructure will host autonomous functions, equipment health management (vessel monitoring systems) from the mtu NautIQ portfolio, and other data-driven functions.ā€

Ā

The mtu NautIQ Bridge unites on a single platform all the subsystems needed for monitoring, controlling and steering the vessel. It was developed by Rolls-Royce engineers in collaboration with Team Italia, which became part of the Rolls-Royce group in July 2023.

Ā

Massimo Minnella, who founded Team Italia with Daniele Ceccanti, said: ā€œWe will launch innovative products for the next generation of yachts. They will have a much wider range of functions in automation and control.ā€

Ā

ACCOMMODATING SUSTAINABLE FUELS

At the core of the mtu yacht offering are the mtu Series 2000 and 4000 yacht engines, now approved for operation with EN15940 synthetic diesel fuels such as hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).

Ā

Kurtulus said: ā€œWe see HVO as a very effective sustainable solution because the fuel is already available. For the future, we see e-methanol as the most promising marine fuel. With ā€˜green’ methanol from renewable energies, CO2-neutral yacht operation is possible.

Ā

Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia, Singapore, Bridge to Propeller, mtu, Nicola Camuffo, Denise Kurtulus, Massimo Minnella, Team Italia Marine, ZF, Ocean Alexander, 35R, Horizon, FD80, Global Order Book, bridge, automation, engines, Pod, propulsion, Winnie Huang, Chew Xiang Yu

Horizon’s popular FD80 can be fitted with two mtu 10V 2000 M96L engines

Ā

ā€œIn addition, harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulates can be significantly reduced. Compared to the other sustainable fuels hydrogen, methane and ammonia, methanol has the highest energy density, considering the tank system.ā€

Ā

The main yacht engines are also available with exhaust aftertreatment systems for IMO III-regulated areas, while Rolls-Royce is currently developing methanol propulsion solutions for yachts and workboats.

Ā

Within the publicly funded MeOHmare project, Rolls-Royce is currently focusing on single-fuel technology and will be testing it on the single-cylinder test bed and the full-engine test bed in the coming years. The company is also testing dual-fuel solutions.

Ā

POD PROPULSION, HYBRID SYSTEMS

On the propeller side, Rolls-Royce is expanding its portfolio with fuel-efficient and particularly manoeuvrable pod propulsion systems. For this purpose, the company is cooperating with ZF and will offer high-efficiency propulsion systems based on the ZF Pod 4600 and mtu Series 2000 engines in the power range up to 1,250kW (1,700bhp).

Ā

Rolls-Royce’s bridge-to-propeller portfolio also includes mtu hybrid solutions. Enabling quiet manoeuvring in port and operating at anchor without climate-damaging exhaust gases, the mtu Hybrid PropulsionPack offers a propulsion solution that enables pure battery-electric operation for a period. The low engine noise and lack of vibration provide even more comfort on board.

Ā

Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia, Singapore, Bridge to Propeller, mtu, Nicola Camuffo, Denise Kurtulus, Massimo Minnella, Team Italia Marine, ZF, Ocean Alexander, 35R, Horizon, FD80, Global Order Book, bridge, automation, engines, Pod, propulsion, Winnie Huang, Chew Xiang Yu

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and ZF are expanding their partnership to include pod propulsion packages

Ā

The mtu Hybrid PropulsionPack integrates the mtu diesel engines with electric propulsion modules, batteries, gearbox, control and monitoring systems and other electronic components. To ensure the optimum propulsion solution for each type of ship, Rolls-Royce offers a modular kit with standardised components.

Ā

Safety, environmental protection, performance, reliability and comfort are the most important aspects when operating a yacht and for many leading shipyards, mtu will remain the go-to solution for all propulsion needs.

Ā

ā€œBasically, mtu engines are top quality, with a beautiful yet practical design,ā€ said Morris Tseng, Manager of the Horizon shipyard. ā€œYacht owners benefit from the combination of high performance and efficiency in addition to the comfort and luxury of silent, low-vibration cruising.ā€

Ā

The Rolls-Royce team in Singapore stands ready to support the bridge-to-propeller portfolio within the Asia region.

Ā

ā€œWith a long-standing history in the APAC region and commitment to excellence, the team in Asia fully prepared to support the expanded Bridge-to-Propeller portfolio,ā€ said Chew Xiang Yu, Director, Marine APAC, Rolls-Royce Power Systems. ā€œWe are dedicated to meeting our customers’ bespoke requirements with service and quality.ā€

Fraser on yachting and the biggest election year in history…

SHARE

How will yachting fare as more than 64 countries and the European Union head to the polls in 2024?

Ā

Fraser, Mark Duncan, superyachts, YACHT STYLE

Ā

In his Column for YACHT STYLE Issue 76, Mark Duncan, Fraser’s Director of Marketing & Business Development, commented on the potential impact of this year’s elections throughout Europe on yachting.

Ā

ā€œFew factors impact discretionary spend more than uncertainty,ā€ Duncan wrote. ā€œBut if global charter and sales data trends show anything, it has to be the relatively light impact that elections and most macroeconomic factors have on overall client demand for quality time away from increasing noise. And yachting offers that more than anything else today.ā€

Ā

Fraser, Mark Duncan, superyachts, YACHT STYLE

Ā

With sales of superyachts in 2023 finishing 33 per cent up on the average for the last 14 years and charter demand continuing to outpace pre-Covid numbers, far from declining, it seems the need to cocoon with loved ones and friends becomes even more precious.

Ā

ā€œAs we enter the world’s biggest election year ever, with perhaps the exception of the 24-30m sector – the entry level to the superyacht arena – we anticipate a year of continued strong demand albeit with some insightful navigation,ā€ Duncan concluded.
