Cigarette Racing officially launched its Middle East operation by presenting five Cigarette Racing boats at a high-profile VIP Open Day event in D-Marin’s Marsa Al Arab marina, which offered guests views of the Burj Al Arab.

A 59’ Tirranna, 52’ Thunder, 42’ Auroris and 41’ Nighthawk from the centre-console range and an iconic 515 Cigarette from the performance line were on display at the marina and in the sea.

Tim Trenker, CEO and Partner of Cigarette Middle East & Europe, said: “This is a significant milestone for Cigarette Racing as we re-affirm our commitment to the Middle East by launching our iconic brand in the region.

“Our VIP Open Day proudly displayed five Cigarette Racing models, with the brand showcasing its strength and commitment to luxury, premium quality in the region. Lagoon 43 to debut at Cannes Yachting Festival

SHARE

As it celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the French cat builder will stage the world premieres of two models at Cannes.

Lagoon, the world leader in pleasure cats with over 7,000 units built, has introduced several innovations on its upcoming 43, which is scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 10-15.

For the Lagoon 43, the Groupe Beneteau brand has again teamed up with its regular collaborators, namely VPLP Design for naval architecture, Patrick le Quement for the exterior, and Nauta Design for the interior. Featuring an overall length of 45ft 8in and a beam of 25ft 3in, the Lagoon 43 will ultimately succeed the best-selling Lagoon 42, which has sold over 1,000 units.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The mast features an overlapping jib and is stepped further forward than on the 42, at the forward end of the saloon. Other notable innovations include a big cutaway at the aft end of each bulwark, where opening a see-through gate allows guests easy access to the cockpit from the pontoon. The aft transoms are just one step down from the cockpit level.

Patrick Le Quément said: “Access on board is facilitated by a cutout in the hull sides, designed to integrate harmoniously into the lines that frame the hull windows and create a previously unknown ease of movement. This new access combines a functional feature with a more emotional touch: its proximity with the sea is its true splendour. It’s there, in the aft cockpit, that I can imagine myself daydreaming.”

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The cockpit features an aft sofa with an adjustable backrest for guests can face the sea if desired, while the davit can be covered by cushions to create a daybed above the water.

A wide step on the port side of the cockpit leads up to the helm station, where steps lead up to a flybridge featuring a C-shaped lounging area, a forward sunpad on the coachroof and an aft area for solar panels. The foredeck also offers an integrated C-shaped seating area.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

However, arguably the biggest innovation is the possibility to connect the outdoor and indoor dining areas to seat up to 12 guests. Both the cockpit and the saloon each have fixed sofas on the starboard side and a lengthways dining table, which can be connected when the saloon doors slide away, creating one enormous table for covered dining or just a large social area.

Nauta Design stated: “On the main deck, the sliding glass door and the dining/café area are designed in such a way as to allow you to arrange the dining table in various configurations: six seats in the interior, six seats in the exterior, or eight to 12 seats in a configuration we call ‘inside out’.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

“This solution combines the sofas in the cockpit with those of the interior dining area, so you can enjoy the exterior and interior spaces combined as one large space and not have to compromise on the interior or exterior.”

The saloon includes a large, open L-shaped galley in the forward port corner, while there are steps on each side of the room to the guest cabins. The new hull forms by VPLP offer generous interior volumes that have created larger berths and greater dimensions in every cabin compared to the 42, “offering unprecedented living space for a boat in this category”, according to Lagoon.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The four-cabin version offers two en-suite guest cabins in each hull. The three-cabin version includes a full-length owner’s cabin in the starboard hull, with the bed forward, a huge storage and desk area midships, and a large bathroom aft.

VPLP Design stated: “We took on the challenge of designing hulls that bring a real contribution to the living space in the cabins, while conserving the boat’s seaworthy qualities. The emotions we wanted to evoke from Lagoon customers were multiple.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

“We wanted to offer large, modular living spaces, adaptable to various situations, whether cruising or at anchor, on a reasonably sized boat that’s easy to handle. The goal was also to bring continuous contact with the marine environment, with large windows in the hull, large glass panels, safe access to the sea, and enjoyable areas for relaxation.”

The Lagoon 43 is scheduled to debut at Cannes with the Lagoon 60, which was unveiled privately in March at the Lagoon Exclusive Days in Bordeaux. Meanwhile, the Lagoon 42 will continue production with a special anniversary edition featuring a unique four-cabin layout and a comprehensive equipment list.

Silent-Yachts has launched the first Silent 62 3-Deck solar-electric catamaran at its facility in Fano, Italy. The Austrian-owned company has produced multiple units of the Silent 60 and slightly extended 62, but the 62 3-Deck is the first version with a full flybridge.

The top deck can be ordered as an open sky lounge – as seen on the first unit – a closed sky lounge or closed owner’s suite. The model’s other options include a forward saloon door to the foredeck, which has been included on the latest launch.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 62, 3-Deck, flybridge, Austrian-owned, Fano, Italy, Fabrizio Iarrera

Fabrizio Iarrera, CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “The launch of our first Silent 62 3-Deck is a proud moment as we continue to innovate and expand the Silent range. It’s also positive proof that the brand continues to operate normally and is focused on delivering boats to clients.”

The first Silent 62 3-Deck’s open flybridge offers full dining facilities, while the interior includes five-plus-one cabins for up to 12 overnight guests, as well as six bathrooms.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 62, 3-Deck, flybridge, Austrian-owned, Fano, Italy, Fabrizio Iarrera

The Silent 62 3-Deck shares the same ultra-efficient drivetrain as the two Silent 62 catamarans launched at the end of last year. This next-generation drivetrain implements a 286kWh, liquid-cooled Lithium-ion battery pack with higher energy density, greater capacity and faster charging rates, due to optimised thermal management.

The CE A yacht is also equipped with 16.8kWp of solar panels, twin 180kW E-motors and a range extender, offering a cruising speed of six-eight knots and transoceanic range. Silent-Yachts plans to deliver the first Silent 62 3-Deck to its owners in a few weeks.

Yamaha Motor, which announced over US$17 billion in revenue for 2023, has closed its acquisition of Torqeedo. The Germany-based producer of electric marine motors was formerly owned by Deutz AG, the Cologne-based internal combustion engine manufacturer.

Yamaha is renowned for its motorcycles, while the Japanese brand’s mobility products also include outboard engines, WaveRunner jetskis and motor boats.

The Torqeedo acquisition marks Yamaha Motor’s entry into the dynamic electromobility market and marks a milestone in the company’s Marine CASE Strategy 2024, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the marine industry and includes the development of an electric propulsion line.

Toshiaki Ibata, Yamaha Motor’s Senior Executive Officer and Chief Director of Marine Business Operations, said: “With the acquisition of Torqeedo, the global market leader for electric mobility on the water, we are taking the next step in our Marine CASE Strategy for 2024. Torqeedo’s years of expertise provide us with expert support in driving the electrification of our marine applications to make an important contribution to a zero-emission shipping industry.”

Founded in 2005, Torqeedo has almost two decades of expertise in the electric mobility sector and more than 250 patents for electric motors, propellers and electrical systems. It also has series-production facilities and broad research resources, which the company now intends to use to develop boat motors with Yamaha Motor.

Fabian Bez (Leader, Issue 72), Torqeedo’s CEO, said: “With Yamaha Motor, we have a strong strategic partner at our side to jointly advance electromobility on the water. This merger offers us new opportunities to strengthen our leading position in the growing market for electric boat motor systems and to shape the future of boating sustainably together.”

CRN’s Project 146 is designed by Nuvolari Lenard

CRN, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, has announced the signing of a new contract for a fully bespoke 67m motor yacht that marks its 10th superyacht project designed by Nuvolari Lenard. While the Italian design studio handled the yacht’s sleek, streamlined exterior styling and its interiors, the naval architecture and engineering are also fully customised.

Known internally as M/Y Project 146, the yacht will feature a steel hull, aluminium superstructure and a diesel-electric propulsion system. The client is represented by Moran Yacht & Ship, which is the owner’s representative and whose new construction team negotiated the building contract, drew up the technical specifications, and will supervise the entire build.

Standout features include a touch-and-go helipad on the upper deck, an extensive beach club with water toys, and a spacious dive centre, while a state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion system has been designed for increased energy efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.

The shipyard’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable yacht design include the development of energy-recovery solutions and proper sizing of equipment. Project 146 is fitted with a heat-recovery system that uses the thermal energy from the generators to heat the water in the pools, water boilers and deck washing system.

Earlier Nuvolari Lenard motor yacht designs for CRN include the 43m Magnifica (2001), 46m Kooilust Mare (2003), 46m Saramour (2005), 72m Azteca (2009) and 55m Atlante (2015). These were followed in recent years by the 62m Voice (2020), 60m Comfortably Numb (2022) and 72m Njoy (2023), plus the 67m Project Maranello, which is currently in build.

The 85m M/Y 144 and 70m Project Thunderball (M/Y 145) are other full-custom CRN superyachts being built at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, on Italy’s east coast. The multi-brand hub is also producing six aluminium builds comprising the first two hulls of the Custom Line Navetta 50, hulls one and two of the Riva 54Metri, and hulls four and five of the Pershing 140.

The Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard is also where Custom Line’s composite range from 30-45m is built, with 26 yachts – as of early April – under construction in the sheds or at the finishing and testing stages on the docks before delivery to their owners and project management teams.

The powercat builder is expanding its Yacht range of inboard flybridge models with a new explorer-inspired 52-footer.

Aquila plans to stage the world premiere of its 50 Yacht at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which will be held from October 30-November 3. The new model joins the powercat builder’s range of inboard flybridge models, which include the 42 Yacht, 44 Yacht, 54 Yacht and flagship 70 Luxury.

The Aquila 50 Yacht has an overall length of 52ft 2in (15.9m) and a beam of 25ft 6in (7.76m), which makes it 4in wider than the 54 Yacht, which is 2ft longer. The newcomer has a 1,600-litre fuel capacity and a standard propulsion package featuring two 480hp Volvo Penta D6 engines, for an expected top speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 18-19 knots.

The yacht is also available in an eco-friendly version, with the flybridge hard top able to integrate solar panels and the engine rooms configured to support either standard combustion engines or an environmentally friendly hybrid engine package. Other options include the Aquila Hydro Glide Foil System™ (AHG), which is compatible with the 550hp Yanmars in the upgraded engine package.

Releasing two exterior renderings, the brand says the Aquila 50 Yacht introduces a new ‘explorer’ aesthetic, “with a commanding high freeboard that sets it apart from the rest”.

Built on insights gathered from extensive research and owner feedback, this model maintains the distinctive innovative yacht styling of the Aquila brand, as exemplified by the most recent Aquila 42 Yacht, while uniquely incorporating elements of a more exploratory-type aesthetic,” Aquila stated.

Based on provisional GAs, the flybridge includes a large sunpad in the aft port quarter that can be covered by an optional retractable sunshade fitted to the hard top. Forward of the sunpad is an L-shaped dinette, while to starboard is an L-shaped wet bar that wraps around the stairway from the cockpit.

The bench-seat helm station is on the centreline and flanked to port by an asymmetrical sofa/sunpad and to starboard by an inward-facing sofa and steps to the foredeck. The latter marks a notable change for Aquila, whose flybridge models have often include centreline steps from the flybridge to the foredeck. The 50 Yacht’s foredeck includes two integrated double sunpads.

The main deck starts aft with a cockpit featuring a wide sofa, dining table and bar stools to port by the L-shaped galley, which faces a large fridge-freezer to starboard of the interior entrance. Forward is a C-shaped sofa and a dining table to port, facing a two-seat sofa to starboard.

The standard accommodation layout includes three en-suite guest cabins and a utility room. In this set-up, the full-beam master suite is forward and has a central aft-facing bed, a large, twin-sink bathroom to port, and an L-shaped sofa and walk-in wardrobe to starboard.

The VIP suite is in the starboard hull, while the port hull includes a double guest cabin with private access to the day head, aft of which is a utility room. Other accommodation layouts include four cabins with four bathrooms and an optional captain quarters.

Earlier this year, Aquila appointed Marine Italia as its distributor in Hong Kong and Singapore, following the conclusion of the builder’s regional collaboration with Simpson Marine.

Bali had seven sailing cats on show, ranging from the entry-level Catsmart and 40ft Catspace to the 4.2, 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 and 5.4, while sister brand Catana displayed its 50ft Ocean Class.

Windelo staged the world premiere of its 54 alongside its 50, Outremer exhibited its 55 and 52, Nautitech showed its 48 Open and 44 Open, while Comar showed the C-Cat 48 and C-Cat 37.

Other sailing catamarans included the VPLP-designed, Trimarine-built GP70, Day 1 65.15, ORC57, Privilege Signature 510, HH44, Balance 442, Dragonfly 40 and Aventura 37.

Neel Trimarans showed its 52 and 43 Performance, while Tricat’s flagship 30 and Libertist 853 were among other sailing trimarans in the five-day show.

V Yachts Asia has sold a Ferretti Yachts 580, which is scheduled to arrive in Pattaya in June and will be based in Ocean Marina Jomtien. Featuring an overall length of 59ft 10in and a beam of 16ft 5in, the second-smallest Ferretti Yachts model had its world premiere at the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show in Germany last year.

The yacht headed for the Gulf of Thailand will be the first Ferretti Yachts 580 in Asia and has been tailored for the owner, according to V Yachts Asia, which was appointed as the Thailand dealer for Ferretti Yachts, Riva and Pershing in early 2021 but has had a new-look management since late last year.

“The owner has made some fantastic selections to elevate this remarkable yacht,” said Kanison ‘Pid’ Premprasert, a Partner at V Yachts Asia.

“Along with the upgrade to Volvo Penta’s 1,000hp D13 engines and the choice of the beautiful Contemporary interior scheme, there are extensive additions. These include bespoke teak detailing, upgraded appliances, top-of-the-line electronics, and safety systems. This vessel truly reflects the owner’s refined taste and attention to detail.”

The owner selected the Ferretti Yachts 580 after owning a range of smaller vessels, with a growing family among key reasons for the upgrade to the spacious flybridge motor yacht.

“The owner is an avid boating enthusiast with a keen appreciation for family time on the water,” Kanison said. “He progressed through an impressive range of  smaller vessels, and decided to upgrade to the Ferretti Yachts 580 as the family grew, representing the culmination of his passion. The yacht’s spacious layout and luxurious finish offer an ideal setting to create lasting memories with loved ones.”

Nie Hua’s Chinese and international crew sailed Happy Go to a hard-fought line honours victory, before finding out they also claimed the overall title.

Owned by Nie Hua and skippered by Jono Rankine, the TP52 Happy Go became the first yacht to win the Rolex China Sea Race ‘double’ of line honours and IRC Overall since Neil Pryde’s HiFi in 2010.

A year after making its Rolex China Sea Race debut, Happy Go beat Ernesto Echauz’s Standard Insurance Centennial V – a Reichel/Pugh 75 that won line honours last year – by just five minutes to win line honours in the 565nm epic after arriving in Subic Bay at 5.20am on March 30.

With a corrected time of 2 days 18 hours 0 minutes 53 seconds, Happy Go was confirmed as the IRC Overall winner once none of the other IRC boats competing could beat her time. William Liu’s Seawolf claimed second in IRC Overall, while Happy Go, Seawolf and Standard Insurance Centennial V came first, second and third respectively in IRC Racer 0.

Nie Hua celebrated with his crew and his wife and kids as he lifted both the China Sea Trophy and Sunday Telegraph Trophy at the prizegiving ceremony, where he was also presented with two Rolex timepieces for winning both line honours and IRC Overall.

“We made a lot of preparations ahead of the race, but getting line honours and the IRC Overall title is completely beyond my expectations,” the Happy Go owner said. “I’d like to give a huge applause to the crew. I’m absolutely thrilled and so thankful. We had a great team. Although we had some language barriers, we operated well, so a big thank you to the team.”

After shaving more than 20 hours off Happy Go’s elapsed time from 2023, Rankine was also full of praise for the crew, which included Australian Luke Payne, who sails for Denmark in SailGP.

“I’m very proud of how the team came together,” said Hong Kong-based Rankine. “It’s a relatively new team and everyone did a fantastic job and there were no egos on the boat, and everyone was helping each other and doing a really good job. It was really satisfying to see.”

Rankine outlined how the line honours tussle became a two-boat battle, with the TP52 and 75ft Reichel/Pugh exchanging the lead on multiple occasions since leaving Hong Kong.

“The battle with Centennial V was close the whole race,” he said. “We were aware of them the whole way. We were always checking to see who was close to the finish line and at the end we could see them right the way through, firstly on AIS and seeing their lights at night.”

“It was exciting and there were a few lead changes. One moment they were ahead, another moment we were ahead and then the next moment we were sitting in a wind hole and not moving, and they were ghosting past us. Yeah, it was exciting and a fun way to win the race.”

The skipper also confirmed that one of the biggest tactical decisions was made ahead of the race when they dropped four people from the line-up to reduce the crew to nine, with the aim of lightening the boat ahead of expected light winds. “We were expecting the race to be a lot longer but we knew it was going to be light winds and not super demanding so we knew we could handle it with nine people.”

After Standard Insurance Centennial V arrived in Subic Bay, Echauz visited Happy Go to congratulate the winners on their victory after what he described as the “most exciting Rolex China Sea Race I’ve ever experienced”.

“It was so exciting from the start on the first day and all the way up to the finish,” said ‘Judes’, one of Asia’s most successful big-boat skippers. “Happy Go did very well. What was so nice was that we were competing with each other, especially on the last day up to the end. I’m very proud of my team.”

Held since 1962, the Rolex China Sea Race is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Rolex has been a partner of the Club since 2007 and title sponsor of its flagship race since 2008.

This year’s Singapore Yachting Festival at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove from April 25-28 could feature about 70 yachts, according to the show’s new owner, ONE°15 Events Management. The four-day show will be preceded by the ICOMIA Boating Industry Conference (April 23-24) followed by the YACHT STYLE Awards gala dinner on the Wednesday evening (April 24), with both events also held at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

A subsidiary of SUTL Enterprise – owner of the ONE°15 Marina brand – ONE°15 Events Management is organising the four-day Singapore Yachting Festival and has engaged Wade Pearce of SG Marine Guide as an event consultant.

As well as an increase in yachts on the water, a notable addition to this year’s show is a ‘Lifestyle Festival’ market on land featuring pop-up F&B stalls, carnival activities, live music, roving entertainment and much more.

Arthur Tay, SUTL Enterprise’s CEO and Executive Director, said: “ONE°15’s acquisition of the Singapore Yachting Festival signifies a transformative journey towards elevating our brand influence in the marine industry. SYF positions Singapore prominently on the global yachting calendar, reinforcing our marina’s standing as a premier destination. Most importantly, it drives substantial economic benefits for the local marine industry and government stakeholders.”

In the same way the event has had a change behind the scenes, it will be a showcase for many dealers publicising new additions and notable changes to their yacht portfolio. Following the completion of its acquisition by Sanlorenzo, Simpson Marine will continue to display Sanlorenzo, Bluegame and Fairline models, while Nautor Swan is set to join a portfolio that no longer includes Lagoon, Beneteau and Aquila.
