Regional dealer Simpson Marine has announced the first sales into Asia of the new Lagoon 55 and Sixty 5 sailing catamarans.

The Sixty 5 is Lagoon’s second-biggest sailing cat

Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht dealership, has announced the first sales into Asia of both the Lagoon Sixty 5 sailing catamaran and the brand-new Lagoon 55, a model only privately unveiled in Bordeaux in March. Both models feature full-length online Reviews on YachtStyle.co.

Asia’s first Lagoon Sixty 5 (Review, Issue 55) is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong in August. The Hong Kong order is equipped with a carbon-fibre boom and carbon mast as part of the options for a performance-focused version, and has a sail area of 330sqm with mainsail and genoa.

The Sixty 5 was released last year and completed Lagoon’s ‘big four’, joining the flagship Seventy 7 sailing catamaran and the Sixty 7 and Seventy 8 powercats. The Sixty 5 features naval architecture by VPLP, exterior design by Patrick le Quément and interiors by Italy’s Nauta Design, as does the 55.

The Sixty 5 is the successor to the popular 620, which proved a popular model in Asia, where over 600 Lagoon catamarans have been sold. In April, the French builder announced it had built its 6,000th catamaran since being founded in 1987.

Simpson Marine is also arranging the delivery of Asia’s first Lagoon 55, a model only launched privately in Bordeaux in March and reviewed in Yacht Style Issue 59. The yacht has been sold into China and is scheduled to arrive in November.

The four-cabin version of Lagoon’s third-biggest sailing cat will be kept in Zhuhai, west of Hong Kong, with the owner set to “explore the region’s spectacular cruising waters”.

The 55’s most notable feature is its aft cockpit, which has been cleared to create an “an open terrace on the sea”, inspired by motor yachts, while the wide sugarscoops provide useable social areas.

Multihulls Special 2021: Silent’s Bold New Generation

SHARE

In Yacht Style’s annual Multihulls Special, Austrian-owned Silent-Yachts unveils the first of its new generation of solar-electric catamarans, which are being built in Italy and Thailand.

The first Silent 60 cruising in the Gulf of Thailand

Silent-Yachts recently launched the first Silent 60, which is expected to show at the Cannes Yachting Festival (September 7-12) and is just the start of a fast-selling new line-up of models from 60-80ft. The range effectively succeeds the Silent 64 built in Turkey and Silent 55 built in China that made the Austrian-owned brand a pioneer in solar-electric catamarans.

Having built a total of 11 units of the 64 and 55 in the past five years, Silent’s eco-friendly proposal has enjoyed a huge rise in popularity according to the order book for its new models, which are being built in Thailand and primarily Italy. As of May, the builder announced 13 sales of the Silent 60, three of the Silent 62 3-Deck, three of the Silent 80 and five of the Silent 80 3-Deck.

Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, says: “Covid affected the demand for Silent-Yachts in a very positive way. In terms of sales, 2020 was our most successful year and we expect even more orders this year.”

CHANGING TASTES

While Covid has given a belated boost to the industry, Köhler believes the increased interest in his brand’s solar-powered catamarans is also a reflection of a growing interest in sustainability and awareness of finite resources.

“We believe people are now more aware than ever of the fact we live in a fragile ecological system. People are looking for yachts even more independent from fossil fuels than sailing boats. Silent-Yachts offers the solution as our catamarans are powered by the sun,” Köhler says.

“However, sometimes people still have difficulty believing we harness the energy from the sun not only to supply the household appliances but also for the actual propulsion of the yachts. This continues to amaze people when they start to realise what our propulsion system is capable of.”

The Silent 62 3-Deck can have an open or enclosed flybridge

In conjunction with its new line-up of models, Silent-Yachts has had to develop new production lines, teaming up with PMG Shipyard in Thailand for some Silent 60 units and creating its primary facilities in Fano, just north of Ancona on Italy’s Adriatic coast. The builder estimates that the new 30,000sqm facilities can produce up to 15 models built on the 60/62 platform and eight hulls of the 80 models.

STRONG PARTNERSHIPS

This year, the company has announced two e-mobility experts as the first members of its Advisory Board. First appointed was Jochen Rudat, who spent a decade with Tesla in Europe including as Director of Central Europe, reporting directly to Elon Musk.

In March, Silent-Yachts announced the addition of Michael Jost, who began his new role after concluding his roles as Volkswagen’s Head of Group Strategy Product and brand Chief Strategy Officer in May.

The Silent 80 is available in a 3-Deck version

“Jochen and Michael bring lots of valuable know-how and experience. Tesla is the electric-car pioneer within the automotive industry and Volkswagen committed itself to a major electrification plan a few years ago. Both men played key roles in these developments,” Köhler says.

“Silent-Yachts can already be described as the technological pioneer in the yachting industry. Compared to the automotive industry, though, the nautical industry is still a few years behind in some areas such as digitalisation, so Michael and Jochen will support us in continuing to shape the future of solar-electric yachting.”

The builder is also cooperating with Jost on a joint-venture to develop a base in a marina in Croatia where a Silent 62 3-Deck will be available for sea-trials from next year. The set-up will complement the company’s Spanish facility at Port Adriano in Mallorca.

Ferretti Group will stage four world premieres at the 43rd Cannes Yachting Festival (September 7-12) along with the show debut of the Ferretti Yachts 1000, which debuted at the second Venice Boat Show in early June. The 1000 is Ferretti Yachts biggest-ever model and features exterior design by Filippo Salvetti and interiors by IdeaeItalia.

The models making their world debut on the Croisette in Cannes will be the Riva 76’ Perseo Super, Riva 68’ Diable, Pershing 6X and Wally WHY200. Before the show, Ferretti Group will hold its annual Ferretti Group Private Preview at the Monaco Yacht Club to give owners an exclusive preview of the entire fleet and the novelties of a record-breaking yachting season.

The first Riva 76’ Perseo Super was launched at La Spezia

Riva recently launched hull one of the 76’ Perseo Super, the new Sportfly model designed by Officina Italiana Design founder Mauro Micheli. The 76ft yacht with an 18ft beam features over 40sqm of glazed surfaces on the hull and superstructure, while Riva traditions are evident in the use of mahogany and polished stainless steel.

In the cockpit, the dining area can become a spacious sun pad by lowering the table for eight and covering it with cushions. The sun deck features a 4sqm central sun pad, while the upper helm is flanked by sofas on both sides. The standard lower-deck layout features three en-suite guest cabins – a fourth is optional – plus a small lounge and a galley.

The Riva 68’ Diable is a development of the former Diable

Riva’s 68’ Diable is a development of the former Diable, itself based on the Riva Super America hull. Also designed by Micheli, the 68’ Diable sits in Riva’s Open range, which spans the 27ft Iseo to the 88’ Florida. The 68’ Diable has a new hard top covering the dining area and helm station features a sunroof with a two-way opening mechanism.

The cockpit features two big sunpads, comprising a chaise-longue at the water’s edge and one that can be shaded – along with the dining area – by an automatic bimini system built into the hard top. The lower deck features a versatile social area with a galley and dinette plus three en-suite guest cabins – a master cabin midships, a twin to port and a VIP forward.

PERSHING, WALLY INNOVATION

The Pershing 6X is expected to have a top speed of 48 knots and a cruising speed of 42 with a pair of 1,550mhp MAN V12 engines, living up to the performance standards and sleek design of the 5X, 7X, 8X and 9X. The range’s second-smallest model, the 6X has an overall length of 62ft and a beam of 16ft.

New features include the styling of the big aft sunpad, the carbon and teak table in the cockpit, the chaise longue with reclining backrest positioned forward, and rectangular portholes that look like windows. The helm station includes a dashboard with two 19-inch monitors, carbon-fibre control panels and an electro-hydraulic steering system, all set under a large, opening sunroof.

Wally’s WHY200 (Wally Hybrid Yacht) is named to represent the widebody yacht’s 200GT volume, a remarkable offering on an overall length of 27m (88ft 9in) but with a sub-24m load line length.

The WHY200 has more than 200sqm (2,153sqft) of indoor living space and 144sqm (1,550sqft) of exterior space, which Ferretti Group says is ‘up to 50 per cent more living space than traditional yachts of its length’ and offers ‘the living space and lifestyle advantages of a 33m (110ft) superyacht’.

Nautor’s Swan has released photos of the Swan Shadow – the brand’s first-ever motor yacht – cruising in the waters of Porto Cervo during the occasion of the Swan Sardinia Challenge, where 34 One Design yachts were competing. The boat was also exhibited in a pool at the centre of a waterfront party where guests were able to see the yacht up close.

Renowned for its sailing yachts, which it has built in Finland since 1967, the company conceived the Shadow as a chase or shadow boat for Swan owners, although the 43ft 4in yacht has evolved to become a multi-purpose boat that can be configured for other uses such as a fishing boat, day boat and Limo tender.

Offering a 14ft 10in beam, the yacht has a twin-stepped V hull and a flush deck, although the aft platform wrapped around the three outboard engines can be raised to become a passarelle or lowered like a swim platform. Engine options range from 225hp to 350hp each, producing a top speed of 55 knots. With triple 300hp Mercury engines, fuel consumption at 30 knots is estimated be 3 l/nm.

Furniture can include an aft-facing triple sunpad and a table with two facing bench seats, all of which can be added or removed with a bolt-on system. The fixed helm station features a double bench and a single seat to port, while forward is a double cabin and head below, and seating in the bow, where a crew cabin can be included.

Roof options range from a shorter T-Top to an extended Long Top. The latter can be equipped with telescopic pillars and moving glass panels to offer an enclosed version suitable for inclement weather or for use as a Limousine. However, a fishing boat set-up may use the T-Top and remove all the standard furniture, replaced by a fishing chair aft.

Italy’s Absolute Yachts becomes the first shipyard with Volvo Penta Assisted Docking across its entire range, with the technology first seen in Asia on a 47 Fly destined for Hong Kong.

Absolute Yachts, Volvo Penta, Assisted Docking, technology, easyAbsolute is integrating Assisted Docking on all its models

Already featuring IPS engines on all its boats, Absolute Yachts will become the first shipyard to provide Volvo Penta’s brand-new Assisted Docking system – launched this year – on its entire range.

The technology will feature on at least three Absolute models on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 7-12 – the new 48 Coupé, a 50 Fly and a 47 Fly destined for Hong Kong, where Absolute Marine represents the brand.

Absolute boats with Assisted Docking will soon be seen around the world, from Europe to the USA and Asia-Pacific, reaching Auckland on a Navetta 58 and Fort Lauderdale on a Navetta 73.

Absolute Yachts, Volvo Penta, Assisted Docking, technology, easyThe 50 Fly will be among three models at Cannes featuring Assisted Docking

Sergio Maggi, Absolute’s founding partner, Vice President and Director of R&D, said: “Our dialogue with suppliers is a great source of inspiration, especially strategic ones who share our values and objectives like Volvo Penta. Instead of following trends, we try to analyse and evaluate them, to set an evolutionary trend ourselves.”

Absolute is offering the new Assisted Docking technology on its entire 47-73ft portfolio of models across the Navetta, Fly and Coupé ranges, all with either Volvo IPS 10, 15, 20 or 30 engines.

EASY BOATING

Volvo Penta launched Assisted Docking to make docking easier and safer regardless of conditions and owner experience. Featuring software that coordinates engine electronics, positioning, IPS propulsion and sensors, the system interprets and automates the captain’s intentions, compensating for dynamic variables such as wind and current, to ensure safe docking.

Absolute Yachts, Volvo Penta, Assisted Docking, technology, easyAssisted Docking will feature on a Navetta 58 heading for Auckland

The system includes a joystick and a GPS-based dynamic positioning antenna. The captain manoeuvres the boat with the joystick, informing the system which direction it should head and at what speed. Using the joystick, the software holds the boat’s course automatically, adjusting for wind or current drift.

Already available for boats with the IPS 10 propulsion system, Volvo Penta and Absolute are testing the system on boats featuring IPS 15 and IPS 30.

Andrea Piccione, Head of Marine Sales for Volvo Penta, said: “Our collaboration with Absolute Yachts is an opportunity to test the Assisted Docking system on the entire range of Volvo Penta IPS-powered boats, in line with our Easy Boating philosophy. The goal is to add value to both the shipyard and the end user, by creating a truly integrated system from the propeller through to transmission and throttles.”

Yacht Style’s annual Multihulls Issue highlights the emergence of Alva Yachts, which is building Ocean 60 and Ocean 90 solar-electric catamarans while growing its global dealer network including in Asia.

Alva Yachts is building multiple units of the Ocean Eco 60

Alva Yachts is a new solar-electric catamaran builder co-founded in early 2020 by Germans Mathias May (Managing Director) and yacht designer Holger Henn (CEO).

Offering electric yachts from 50-90ft, the company evolved from the former Pica Yachts, which had six years’ experience in the development, construction and marketing of smaller electric-driven sailing and motor yachts, selling 54 boats.

Although Alva is headquartered in Bad Pyrmont in inland Germany, its shipyard is 3,000km away in the Antalya Free Zone on Turkey’s southwest coast. The brand recently completed its first hull, delivering an Ocean Eco 54 to a European client, although the company’s product range has since evolved.

Alva Yachts, Catamarans, Solar, power, electricUS dealer Yacht Sales International (YSI) has secured the first Ocean Eco 60

Its primary models are now the Ocean Eco 60 and the flagship Ocean Eco 90 superyacht, both of which are offered in Explorer versions that feature an enclosed flybridge, carbon-reinforced hull, alternative layout and stronger air-conditioning.

GLOBAL NETWORK

Multiple units of the Ocean Eco 60 are in build, while the first unit of the Ocean Eco 90 is under construction.

Alva Yachts, Catamarans, Solar, power, electricAlva is building hull one of its flagship Ocean Eco 90 superyacht

“These yachts will be delivered to USA, Russia and Europe. For such a new brand, we’re more than happy with our orders and are excited about delivering yachts across the world soon,” says May, who says Alva’s shipyard can accommodate up to six 60ft and three 90ft models.

“We even think the pandemic helped our online marketing campaigns quite a lot because more people got into yachting from home and through digital media.”

Alva has also prioritised the establishment of a global network of dealers including Yacht Sales International (YSI) – which has four offices in the US – as the exclusive distributor for North America.

Alva Yachts, Catamarans, Solar, power, electricThe interior of Alva’s Ocean Eco 90 with the galley-up layout

Dealers have also been appointed in northern Europe, Russia, the Gulf, Australia and New Zealand, as well as Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan in Asia.

ELECTRIC FUTURE

Alva’s models are offered with hybrid propulsion or in a fully electric, solar-powered version with a back-up diesel generator. May acknowledges the role played by Silent-Yachts in pioneering solar-electric catamarans in the boating industry.

“For us, the future of yachting, like the car sector, is electric. Silent-Yachts has done great work as solar yacht pioneers for many years and while we acknowledge our similarities, we try to focus on our strengths and differences,” May says.

Alva Yachts, Catamarans, Solar, power, electricThe master suite on the Ocean 90 superyacht

“Solar-electric yachts have a lot of advantages over conventional yachts in addition to the lower CO² emissions. The silent engines and the opportunity to be completely self-sufficient on the water are just two arguments that show why solar power will transform the yacht market.

“Moreover, we’re working on technologies like hydrogen fuel cells that replace conventional generators to make our yachts fully electric, which is the next step for e-yachting.”

Despite being a new company initially driven by orders from Europe and the US, Alva is looking to make a concerted push into Asia and has opened an office in Singapore.

Alva Yachts, Catamarans, Solar, power, electricAlva is building its Ocean 60 and 90 (pictured) in Turkey

“Although Alva currently finds a lot of success in USA and Europe, we believe we can also inspire a lot of customers in Asia,” May says.

“These boats are perfect for environmentally continuous, long-distance boating in Asia, so the next expansion step is to grow our sales structure there. We’re continually expanding the brand and are excited about entering the Asian market as well as the charter market.”

Lürssen has launched project Enzo, a bespoke 115m, 5,000GT superyacht built for a repeat client who previously owned an 86m build from the German shipyard.

“The owner was extremely impressed with the build process of his first yacht and wanted to replicate the experience, right down to the same build and design team, convinced that no one else could meet his particular demands,” Lürssen stated.

Italian design studio Nuvolari Lenard was again responsible for the exterior and interior design, while Moran Yacht & Ship managed and supervised the project. Nuvolari Lenard’s brief was to create a healthy and family-focused life on board, with numerous offerings for sports and activities including an extra-large gym on the skylounge deck and a spacious wellness area on the lower deck.

Enzo’s design language is all about connecting her six decks – both the naval and tech elements with the living space – into one whole,” said Dan Lenard. “Her three decks integrated into the high bow guarantee sea-keeping in true ocean conditions, while also allowing her an innovative full-beam owner suite duplex.”

The 377-footer with a 59ft 7in beam is equipped with state-of-the art technology and engineering systems including a heat-recovery system in the generators that heats the water for the pool, reducing consumption and emissions. Dynamic Positioning enables electronic anchoring in sensitive and remote areas, protecting the seabed and allowing for safe mooring regardless of water depth.
