Charter in Asia 2021: Hong Kong – NextWave Yachting

NextWave Charters is focused on fun-filled days with large groups and lots of water toys, one of the company’s many areas of expertise.

NextWave operates charters and events on its custom-built 65ft NextWave Island (on right)

Part of NextWave Yachting, NextWave Charters offers a diverse listing of boats in terms of price and style from wooden Chinese junks to houseboats, sailing boats and motor yachts including the company’s purpose-built NextWave Island, a 65ft ‘luxury event boat’ unique in Hong Kong.

In June, the company staged a popular private party on NextWave Island, where models wearing Sankini bikinis were the stars of a day-long event that also showed off the boat’s toys including an enormous inflatable Aquaglide slide that runs down from the top deck.

NextWave Island features a huge Aquaglide slide

Built for large-scale events, the boat can cater to up to 40 guests under ‘normal’ circumstances. Its rectangular, three-deck layout provides enormous social areas, with both the main deck and flybridge open to the elements, with outdoor blinds are available for the main deck.

The main deck includes a bar and outdoor rinse shower, the flybridge features a DJ area and dance floor, while there’s a speaker system fitted throughout the boat.

NextWave partnered with Sankini for a major summer event

However, NextWave Island can be arranged in a multitude of setups due to the vast floor space, open layout and the modular furniture on board. This means it can host anything from children’s and adult birthday parties to wedding after-parties, company events and product launches.

The towering Aquaglide slide, a trampoline, inflatables and noodles are among the boat’s standard toys. However, there are options for a lot more as NextWave is the leading water toys company in Hong Kong, where it’s the dealer for a huge number of brands including Seabob, Lift eFoil, JetSurf, Aquaglide, Yachtbeach, Belassi, JetXTender, Oxoon and Scubajet.

“We’re creating new experiences and services for the charter market, especially with NextWave Island,” says Frankie Chau, Managing Director of NextWave.

“Combining water sports and chartering is really popular in other countries and we want to carry that into Hong Kong. We will keep having exciting new events and creative ways on NextWave Island to let people enjoy our services.”

Asiamarine has a diverse CA charter fleet headed by Hong Kong’s largest active sailing boat and a Sunseeker Predator 74, while the company offers a range of water toys for rent on top of those provided by each boat.

Furthermore, the company’s charter crew have undergone hospitality training to provide the level of service expected by increasingly demanding guests, reveals Laura Verbrugge, Charter Broker for Asiamarine.

“Clients are expecting top-quality services as part of a shift to more qualitative charters, less party groups. People like spending quality time on board with family and close friends,” Verbrugge says.

“At the same time, there’s more demand for larger yachts with more cabins so more people can stay overnight. Before the pandemic, about two out of five bookings were for overnight and now it’s three out of five. There’s also a growing interest in special attractions such as an overnight charter with a guest chef onboard or extra watersports such as wakesurfing and eFoil.”

The Sunseeker Predator 74 is a 2019 build with an excellent crew including a former Cathay Pacific business class flight attendant. The yacht can have 15 guests for a day charter and six people staying overnight in three cabins – a master, VIP and twin.

The open layout includes a large sunpad aft, a covered alfresco dining area, and an interior with a saloon, twin helm seats plus a raised corner sofa that all benefit from the opening sunroof. The foredeck has a C-shaped couch as well as a large sunpad. A tender is included in the rates, which include HK$100,000 for eight hours and HK$140,000 for a 24-hour overnight stay.

She’s a fun boat and ideal for entertainment, with a barbecue on board as well as a huge range of toys including a tender, inflatables, trampoline, kayak, floating mat and fishing lines. Rates range from HK$65,000 for eight hours to HK$180,000 for three days and two nights.

Simpson Yacht Charter has shaken up the charter scene in Hong Kong with the addition to its CA listings of an SX76, which has become the first-ever Sanlorenzo SX yacht for charter in the city.

And it’s not just any SX76 but the model’s first-ever unit, the silver-hulled version that was presented for the model’s world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2018 before it was delivered to Hong Kong the following year.

Part of the Italian builder’s iconic crossover range, the SX76 features an enormous aft deck that can store multiple tenders and toys, then become a large waterside beach club once the platform is cleared.

Based in Aberdeen, the yacht can accommodate 12 guests during the day and is well equipped for watersports with a jet RIB tender, a jetski, two Seabobs, two foilboards and four paddleboards.

The flybridge has a covered dining area and an aft lounging zone with three sun loungers, while the foredeck offers another outdoor area with seating and fixed sunpads. The yacht includes a zero-speed stabiliser for comfort at anchor.

Piero Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, created a special-edition interior including a lower deck with a master cabin, VIP cabin and a saloon with sofas that can be converted to two single beds. Charter rates start from HK$108,000 (US$14,040) per day plus expenses.

WIDE RANGE

In Hong Kong, Simpson Yacht Charter offers over 40 yachts for charter including motor yachts, superyachts and sailing yachts and catamarans.

Meanwhile, an Open 40 catamaran has joined the fleet and is available from Monday to Friday for three-hour harbour cruises each evening, either 6-9pm or 7-10pm, starting from Causeway Bay or Central. The special package for up to 15 guests costs HK$12,800 and includes full Mediterranean catering plus a limited amount of drinks.

Reanna Wang, Manager of Simpson Yacht Charter, says: “In Hong Kong, the charter market has been very active since the beginning of the pandemic. With people not able to travel as they did before, they’re spending more time on the water than before. The demand spreads throughout the entire range of charter products and packages: half-day, sunset cruises, day charters, weekend, long weekends and longer holidays.”

Northrop & Johnson offers an interesting selection of CA charter listings including Xanadu of London, a 34m Moonen motor yacht based in Phuket that completed a multi-million-dollar, two-year refit in January.

Toys and tenders include 15ft and 11ft RIBs, a three-person Yamaha FX Cruiser jet-ski, two underwater scooters, two paddleboards, an inflatable dock with netted pool, towables and snorkelling equipment.

Xanadu of London charters from US$75,000 per week

As well as a big swim platform with wide steps leading up to a semi-circular cockpit, outdoor areas include a flybridge with covered sunpads, dining table and a wet bar with barbecue.

Surprisingly, the high-gloss cherry interior features the dining room aft and saloon forward. The main deck master suite has a huge skylight, king-size bed, lavish bathroom with gold-plated fixtures, and an office with a sofa bed where a child could sleep. The lower deck has three en-suite guest cabins as well as a sauna with a separate shower. Xanadu of London charters from US$75,000 per week.

Xanadu of London is packed with toys

Lies Sol, who heads Northrop & Johnson Asia-Pacific’s charter business from Phuket, says: “Xanadu of London is today in better-than-new condition and is exceptionally well-suited for a family charter, with lots of water toys on board. Also, because she has zero-speed stabilisers, she’s very stable, which will especially appeal to first-time charterers.”

MAXXX

Also based in Phuket, Maxxx is a 26.3m Sunseeker that provides a fast way around the islands, with a cruising speed of 23 knots and a top speed of 30 knots. Based in Yacht Haven, she was refitted in 2018 and fun features include a jacuzzi on the flybridge while toys include a 16ft tender, 300hp SeaDoo jet-ski with sound system, two-person kayak, paddleboard and towable toys.

Four en-suite guest cabins on the lower deck comprise two similar-sized master suites and two twins, one of which is convertible. Summer rates start from US$45,000 per week.

Maxxx is the best choice for guests who want to discover the many attractions of southern Thailand but don’t want to be underway for too long,” Sol says. “She’s a fantastic, fun yacht and can island-hop without wasting precious holiday time.”

Maxx is equipped with a jacuzzi and jetski

From November through May, Xanadu of London and Maxxx will be available for charters to/from Langkawi in Malaysia.

LONESTAR

Meanwhile, Lonestar presents an alternative vibe, with the 26m French-built sailing catamaran offering vast social areas, six guest cabins and an astonishing array of water toys including comprehensive diving and fishing gear.

Currently awaiting the opportunity to charter in Indonesia’s Anambas Islands northeast of Singapore, where she can pick up guests, she’s scheduled to move base to Phuket later in the year. As an 85ft cat with a 39ft beam, Lonestar has remarkable outdoor deck space, with biminis providing shade. The aft cockpit offers alfresco dining, while the large saloon has a lounge, dining and a bar.

The hulls can accommodate 16 guests in four doubles – each with an extra bed for a child – and two twins midships. Guests can pick up sailing skills as Captain Luc Heymans has over 15 years of ocean racing under his belt. The VPLP-designed Lonestar easily reaches 10-15 knots in the right conditions.

Toys include an 18ft tender, four paddleboards, four one-person kayaks, a wakeboard, waterskis, towables, and even a Laser sailing dinghy. All-inclusive weekly rates start from €43,000 (about US$51,000).

Lonestar is one of the few yachts in Southeast Asia offering such a huge platform to families and large groups of friends, with space for everyone,” Sol says. “There are toys for all ages, while divers and fishing enthusiasts will love the scuba diving and top-quality fishing and trolling gear on board.”

DOUBLEYOU

Northrop & Johnson’s charter fleet has recently been boosted by Doubleyou, the 27m Cheoy Lee named Continental Drifter II when owned by American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett.

After several years cruising around Southeast Asia, she emerged from a refit last year and is based in Subic Bay in the Philippines, where she can make the most of her 4,300nm range.

Eight guests can stay in two full beam suites and two twin cabins, with the option of an extra bed in the sky lounge. Tenders include a 15ft Boston Whaler, 13ft Zodiac and 10ft crew tender, while toys include wakeboards and waterskis, plus gear for diving, deep-sea fishing and snorkelling.

Doubleyou features striking artwork

Doubleyou is a perfect family holiday yacht with a relaxed, beach-house atmosphere, tasteful furnishings and striking artwork,” Sol says. “She can cruise beautiful, unexplored regions for long periods without refuelling.”

Camper & Nicholsons has its Asia headquarters in Hong Kong, but the company’s central agency (CA) charter listings include a wide variety of superyachts across the region including the remarkable 50m Kudanil Explorer. Based in Indonesia, this heavy-duty ocean vessel built in Japan in 1978 underwent conversion into a charter yacht in 2018 – and what a remarkable conversion it was.

Offering about 11,000sqft of living space, it’s the only charter yacht in Indonesia to offer a private balcony for each of its guest cabins. The eight roomy en-suite cabins each have a king-size bed and a balcony complete with a spacious daybed and coffee table set-up.

The yacht even has two dining areas or ‘restaurants’, while other facilities include a library, spa room, Jacuzzi and an armada of tenders and toys including diving equipment.

Kudanil Explorer has a boutique cruise ship feel and is ideal for cruising the calm waters of Indonesia,” says New Zealand-born Tracey Scaife, a Charter Marketing Manager for C&N.

With up to 21 crew, Kudanil Explorer is based in the Komodo region in the summer and Raja Ampat in the winter, available for an all-inclusive weekly rate of US$115,500.

LAMIMA

The 65.2m Lamima, the world’s largest wooden sailing yacht, has a similar sailing calendar and is available from US$154,000 per week.

The biggest of all the charter phinisis that cruise the Indonesian archipelago, she was custom built in Sulawesi in 2012 and accommodates 14 guests in seven en-suite cabins.

Lamima features huge interior and exterior social spaces, a PADI dive centre, two large tenders, jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks. Her 20-strong crew have expert local knowledge and include a tour guide, two Indonesian chefs, PADI-certified dive instructors, two Balinese masseurs/spa therapists and a yoga instructor.

Ocean Emerald’s versatile layout makes her perfect for relaxed family charters or high-energy party charters,” says Nicole Terry, C&N Charter Marketing Manager.

“She plans to be based in Phuket until March 2022 but as and when the sea borders allow, she will also consider charters in Malaysia as well as further destinations like the Maldives and Philippines on a case-by-case basis.”

Camara C has completed a four-year refit

Fraser’s charter CAs based in Phuket include the 32m Camara C, a steel-hulled classic built by Yarrow & Co in Scotland in 1961 and a recent arrival in Thailand.

After chartering for over 30 years in the Mediterranean, the 105ft motor yacht recently completed a four-year refit and now features modern amenities, an inflatable swim platform and plenty of toys.

On the lower deck, the five all-white en-suite cabins include a double and twin forward, while aft of the engine room are two doubles plus a VIP twin with queen-sized beds in the stern. There’s also accommodation for six crew.

The main deck has a cosy alfresco dining aft and a large saloon with sofas on three sides, while the flybridge has plenty of clear deck space, a large lounging area aft and a covered dining table midships.

Demarest has also had a recent refit

The 105-footer emerged from a refit in 2019 and started chartering in Phuket, with musician John Legend and model Chrissy Teigen among the first guests.

Popular features include a large jacuzzi – non-standard for this model – and covered dining area on the flybridge, while there’s also alfresco dining in the covered aft cockpit on the main deck. The interior has a saloon with seating on all four sides and a formal dining area beside a huge TV on the forward bulwark.

On weekdays, non-members will be able to hire Vibe, which will be the city’s largest catamaran for charter in Hong Kong, with a capacity for 50 people. TYBA clarifies Thailand charter changes

The Thai Yachting Business Association comments on regulations that now welcome foreign-flagged superyachts to charter while in the country and offer extended stays.

The Thai Yachting Business Association (TYBA) has confirmed that the Thai Government has announced a new regulation that will allow 30m-plus superyachts with a Thai charter permit to operate in Thailand under clarified VAT and import arrangements.

Furthermore, the temporary import allowance has been extended from 12 months (six months plus six months) to 30 months (six months plus two years in six-month increments). Superyachts with a valid licence will pay VAT on all charter income they generate in Thailand during their temporary stay in Thai waters.

The Thai Customs Depart announced the new regulation before it was confirmed during a meeting headed by the Minister of Finance, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith. The meeting including Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, a former Minister of Tourism and Sport, and TYBA representatives including Chairman Matthew Na Nagara.

Na Nagara said: “After many years of close collaboration with the Thai Government, the Chamber of Commerce and various other organisations, this new policy will be of benefit across the Thai yachting industry as well as the local economy. Allowing superyachts to charter in Thailand will attract more to visit and influence them to remain here longer.

“These yachts require regular maintenance and service, providing an economic benefit across our industry. Local business will also gain since food and beverage provisioning accounts for about 25 per cent of the total charter value, and charter guests tend to spend lavishly on hospitality and tourism activities. Superyacht crew expenditure is also significant and will positively impact local and national businesses.”

TYBA has completed a study to support this initiative, covering New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Maldives, all of which have opened to superyacht charter in recent times. The Caribbean and parts of Europe have long benefited economically from superyacht charter activity, so the announcement from the Thai Customs Department is expected to spur significant growth for the Thai yachting industry and the general economy.

Peerawich Thoviriyavej, a TYBA Board Member, said: “This brings Thailand in line with regulations in neighbouring countries and elsewhere in the world. To come from Europe or Australia takes many weeks, so yachts can now make the most of all that ‘Amazing Thailand’ has to offer. We look forward to working further, with our APAC and ASEAN members, to grow this outstanding cruising region for charter and pleasure yachting.”

The Thai Government is moving towards removing the prohibitive VAT on the value of any visiting superyacht that wishes to charter in the country.

Phuket Yacht Haven, one of Thailand’s leading marinas for superyachts

Progress is being made towards foreign-flagged visiting superyachts being encouraged to spend the winter seasons in Thai waters and offer their yachts for charter in the country without having to pay VAT on the value of the vessel.

The decision to remove VAT was taken at a meeting in Bangkok chaired by Minister of Finance Arkhom Termpittayapaisith and attended by officials from both the Customs and Revenue departments.

The meeting included Matthew Na Nagara, Chairman of the Thai Yachting Business Association (TYBA), and Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, the former Minister of Tourism and Sport and currently Chairperson of K-Bank and Committee of National Reform on Economics. Nagara and TYBA have been instrumental in pushing the initiative through.

“TYBA is delighted the Thai Government has supported our goal to make Thailand the most attractive yachting hub in Asia. We already provide many advantages such as stunning archipelagos, good infrastructure, yachting professionals, skilled craftsman and a loving culture,” Nagara said.

“These policies will make Thailand an even more attractive destination for yacht and superyacht visitors. This will boost growth of the Thai yachting industry and provide work opportunities to many Thai citizens along the Andaman Sea and in the Gulf of Thailand.”

The meeting marked the culmination of a six-year campaign since 2015 to change the local regulations. The tax regulations around the new initiative should be confirmed well ahead of the 2021/22 winter ‘peak season’ for yachting when Thailand could potentially welcome an influx of high-spending tourists depending on the pandemic situation.

However, as a yacht operator remarked: “The permission to stay in Thailand for six months (renewable every six months for up to two years) is valid for ‘Pleasure Craft’, defined as a boat used for personal or sports recreation, not for commercial purpose unless there is an exemption in accordance to Thai Vessel Act. It remains to be clarified whether it includes and refers to the Charter Licence, as well as the actual implementation on the charter VAT, foreign crew work permits and Visa.”

Overall, though, there seems to be significant progress after a long period of lobbying by the Thai yachting industry.
