AkzoNobel is marking the 50th anniversary of its world-renowned Awlgrip® brand with activities throughout the year to celebrate how it has become synonymous for unrivalled quality and performance with an amazing high-gloss finish among professionals and boat owners worldwide.

 

Awlgrip originated out of an Aerospace coating, Alumigrip, in 1973. The evolution of Awlgrip has been defined by a restless spirit of innovation to meet the changing boat-building technologies, repair and application processes, being ahead of regulatory changes, and to deliver an extensive colour palette that meet consumer demand and expectations.

Awlgrip’s historic Fighting Lady Yellow

 

These include Tim Oenbrink, General Manager of Merritt Supply, who tells the story of selling the first can of Awlgrip topcoat with a custom yellow colour for the sport fish boat Fighting Lady, and how Merritt Supply and Awlgrip work together to provide premium products and support to applicators.

The Pearl 82 can reach 33 knots with twin 2,000hp MAN V12s

 

Pearl Yachts, represented in Hong Kong by Vivian Chan of VP Yachts, is developing the Pearl 82, with the first hull scheduled to launch in 2024. The 25.3m flybridge motor yacht with a 6.3m beam features an exterior by Dixon Yacht Design and an interior by renowned design house Kelly Hoppen Interiors, with both studios behind all current Pearl models.

 

The Pearl 82 continues an upgrade of the British brand’s range that began with the debut of the Pearl 62 in 2020 and the Pearl 72 that premiered at last October’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show before its European debut at Boot Dusseldorf this January.

The garage can house a Williams SportJet 345 and a jet-ski

 

The Pearl 82 can be powered by twin 1,650hp, 1,900hp or 2,000hp MAN V12 engines, the latter providing a top speed of 33 knots. As with all Pearl Yachts, the Pearl 82 comes with a comprehensive five-year warranty.

 

Superyacht-style features include a main-deck master suite plus four guest cabins on the lower deck, three crew cabins, a raised pilot house, and foredeck access from the flybridge and master suite.

The bulwarks fold down on both sides of the cockpit (Riviera-option)

 

Features include fold-down wings at cockpit level, a change from the builder’s flagship Pearl 95, where the wings are either side of the swim platform. The Pearl 82’s garage offers space for a tender up to a Williams SportJet 345 as well as a jet-ski and other water toys.

 

The aft deck can be outfitted with Riviera or Veranda arrangements to match owners’ lifestyles. The Riviera layout features aft-facing sun pads behind the table and sofa set-up, while the Veranda layout allows the seating to pivot between picnic and private patio orientations, always with the sea in sight.

Bill Dixon of Dixon Yacht Design said: “As with every Pearl design, the challenge is to pursue a class-leading, feature-led design. The design had to retain the defining features of a Pearl while balancing a sporty profile with large interior volumes and extensive hull, superstructure and roof glazing. Without a doubt, the Pearl 82 is a stand-out design in the 80ft market.”

 

A private terrace in the forepeak is accessible from the master suite and from the flybridge, with a dedicated opening to port midships. The foredeck lounge is just a few steps up and has sunpads and a sofa around a cocktail table, and can be covered by a bimini.

The master suite forward on the main deck

 

The flybridge features a full-sized dining table, multi-functional wet bar and a sun pad and hot tub combo, while freestanding furniture can also be specified. Shelter from the hard top can be adjusted with ‘full shade’, ‘adjustable louvres’ and ‘full sun’ settings.

 

Inside, the saloon has floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy views aided by cut-outs in the bulwarks. A forward dining table for 10 guests sits before an eye-catching bar. The galley is accessed to port and the master suite entry is on the starboard side. Engine-room access, galley access and foredeck access are all positioned on the port side of the yacht, ensuring privacy for guests and crew.

The second Experiential Yachting Forum will be held on March 2 and 3 at the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) conference facilities in Dubai Harbour. Both days start at 1.00pm with registration, networking and a light lunch start before a 2.30pm introduction by moderator Peter Economides, Maria Alekseenko Magan of Experiential Yachting and Riju George, Group Director, Exhibitions at DWTC, organiser of DIBS.

 

On March 2, ‘Multifunctional Superyachts’ (2.40pm) features Paris Baloumis (Oceanco), Francis Lapp (Sunreef Yachts Eco), Ahmed Youssef (Innovative Marine Ventures, Aqua Pod), Michael Breman (Lurssen) and Samuel Chamberlain (Four Seasons Yachts). Baloumis then hosts ‘Elevating Human Potential through Yachting – Presentation by Oceanco’ (3.00pm).

 

‘Experience Economy & Yachting – Presentation by Four Seasons Yachts’ (3.15pm) is followed by ‘Multifunctional and multipurpose urban mobile marine development – Presentation by Innovative Marine Ventures’ (3.30pm).

 

Lapp is again on stage for ‘Cleaner & Healthier Yachting – Presentation by Sunreef Yachts’ (3.45pm) and is followed by ‘Introduction to Holistic Yachting’ with Alekseenko Magan, Prof. Philip B Schoettle, MD, PhD (Aera Health) and Max Schnyder (Aera Health).

What Loic Serot loves most about his job is not only the access to a world of exclusivity and luxury but the real interaction and connection he can have with very different and interesting people, celebrities, artistic talents and chefs too. While gastronomy today has been elevated beyond comparison, it remains focused on the table, which has always been a locus for storytelling and history. There is so much to say about dinners, it is the most politically — and artistically — charged moment that can exist, in life itself.

 

Today at ASIAOMB, as Strategic Director and Art Director, he is broadening and developing the concepts and economy that he has created for dinner to other dimensions in luxury, travel, and yachting to successfully create other kinds of experiences.Ahead, we speak with Loic Serot to learn more about his experiences as an Event Creator.

 

You are an “Event Creator”, how important has been your family background in becoming who you are now (for eg. your father as an architect and your mother as a fashion designer)?

 

My parents raised my brother and I with an open mindset and tailored a portfolio of very different experiences that encouraged us to explore a wide range of knowledge from different cultures, literature, architectures, art, fashion and music.

As our parents were often invited to openings, they were not home and we became responsible for our time. We were asked to surprise them when they returned. This pushed us to be creative, transforming the house into another theme by rearranging the lighting and objects, transforming the rooms into a starry hotel and sometimes even dressing up for the occasion. Experimenting with new recipes and cooking soon became a passion we both treasure.

The most fascinating part of my upbringing was my parents’ background as an architect and a fashion designer. They focused on converting 2D drawings into 3D realities, and that influenced the way I perceived things too. I find it transcendental to see the moment when an idea takes shape, birthing from a specific emotion, and then becoming a true experience of changing realities.

 

If you were to mention one mentor who is inspiring you in your daily life and career, who would that be?

My father, Daniel Serot. He was an unknown genius who played with his senses to manipulate reality and to create a stunning life.

 

Salvador Dali was another mentor that I look up to. He was not just an iconic painter but also an incredible event designer, staging “impossible” stories.

 

Another source of inspiration for me comes from the book “Image, Icon, Economy” by Marie-José Mondzain. The book explores the origins of the Byzantine empire’s war of representation and how it influenced our contemporary imagination. Sometimes I do think that Bernard Arnaut learned a lot from it as well.

 

What would you describe as your forte? What different perspectives do you provide versus other Event Producers?

I would say it is my ability to craft compelling stories based on the laws of the universe, attraction, and excitement, then to translate those stories into distinct chapters that possess their own power and energy of emotion through art, aesthetics and design, and finally to crystallize the magic by ending with a climax of memorable celebrations.

I don’t compare too much to other producers’ work. Instead, I follow my intuition and believe that the best ideas are hidden in the processes of nature, physics, the universe, history, technology and games. I focus all my attention on the subject and work until all parts are mastered, connected and alive in the same direction. Each project is a whole new “economy” to be envisioned and succeed.

 

 

Do you have any specificity?

At events, for example, the food plates were mainly used as a white canvas: an invisible support to contrast a chef’s creations, or as a backdrop to reflect the brand’s logo. But for me, each plate is more than a support or a statement, I create them with the same perfection as the other components of the experience. So, each course and plate works in the continuity of a narrative. They display, at first, a chef’s culinary economy (how gastronomy works as a combination of taste, temperature, substance, plating and intention) and then integrate those in a larger framework and artistic context to infuse emotions that link with the wider theme.

 

The concept of “experience” is key for you when designing an event. What is a successful “experience” for guests?

People attend events to experience something not commonly felt or expected. The key value is to successfully provide access to another reality. We, as event makers, have to be the conduit of newness and allow people to elevate themselves to another level of freedom and imagination — in essence, we are the magicians.

The principles we work by are: ritual, transfiguration, sacrifice, glorification and catharsis.

The actual return on event investment (apart from exponential sales) are these crystalized memories that must persist the longest. And they should be engraved, mirroring as well, brand’s name and philosophy.

 

Why do you specifically focus on events related to the world of luxury?

If you want to explore more in-depth about specific creation or concept in events, you need ways to afford them. So there is no compromise: the best for the best. For luxury brands and billionaires, they need you to generate exceptional moments for them and their guests. This is a challenge that I readily take on to create new dimensions and ideas to blow people away.

 

Is there anything you wish to add about your work?

We have learnt so much these last 10 years and chartered new directions for the next 10 so there will be a lot of changes coming. As a result of our work, we also created two new roles: “Dinner Designer” in 2010 and “Culinary-tellers” in 2012 who bring meaning to any event. These new roles have become essential in any high-end event today.

I think that our industry is more complex and sophisticated than in the past, involving a range of new techniques, representations, effects, personalisation and dimensions.  So it is crucial to be specific in your approach and invite the right person to do the right job, especially in Asia.

 

What brought you to Asia? And why did you settle in Hong Kong?

I was drawn to Asia due to its culture, philosophy, and cinema which I felt a connection to my work. After completing three masters in art, design and cinema, I was awarded grants and invited to participate in various art residences in Asia, including becoming a laureate of the prestigious Villa Kujoma, Kyoto in 2005. After this exceptional experience, I chose to stay in Asia. Hong Kong was growing to be fascinating enough to aid me in developing concepts I had about art, architecture and gastronomy.

 

Building upon the success of our experimentation in festivals and events, we founded ASIAOMB (AO), a company based on an avant-garde vision of unique, sensorial and luxurious curated experiences. For example, we were the first to create a full-immersive video projection and sound-designed series of dinners in Asia for K11 Founder Adrian Cheng in the K11 Art Mall TST opening at the beginning of 2010, inviting a young Singaporean pastry chef to lead the gastronomy and dishes structures, that has since become famous.

 

After Asia, what is another continent you would like to explore?

We did a few projects in Europe and a lot in South Asia, and we do love Hong Kong and Singapore for their high culture, curiosity and demographic. Now, it seems as well that some of the wealthy Chinese and Americans are interested in us. So, let’s see how it will turn…

 

 

What is your favourite memory of an event you organised in Singapore?

There are so many good memories of success. Chanel, in the heart of Aubazine; Cartier, Panthera Odyssey, a sublime exhibition that we signed; Bank of Singapore was one of the more outstanding projects involving virtuality and Web3 theme. The most amazing was definitely the launch of the biggest superyacht in Asia, the White Rabbit for the Goh family.

My very favourite among the others that I have done was the launch of Richard Mille 50-04 with Kimi Raikkonen. It was by far the most challenging but also the most rewarding. I had to come up with a way to raise funds for Kimi’s foundation, while also entertaining the guests with 3-starred meals and reviewing the watch. At first, I was unsure about how to mix luxury, haute watchmaking, celebrities, games and gastronomy, but in the end it all came together seamlessly. The event culminated with an ecstatic series of emotions from races, menu, TV show, table games, intensity and humour, all happened in a world-class setting.

 

 

Your next important projects across 2023?

After these three years of strong economic headwinds, we have re-evaluated AO to capitalise more on our exceptional skills. On the one hand, we are continuing to create stunning events for brands and the wealthy incorporating even more potentiality and vision. On the other hand, we are now beginning to engage with investors for a multi-immersion restaurant that would be a culmination and celebration of our 13 years of success in designing dinner experiences.

Additionally, there is also a hotel concept that has the potential to revolutionise the hotel industry with a new destination!  But most importantly, after several years as a sponsor and partnership agent, AO will host its own summit that will open in 2024, with the first-ever event that to generate positive carbon credits. Stay tuned!

 

And about dinner “design”?

The next one is named the “Jet lag dinner” and is being organized for one of our most loyal customers in Europe. We are creating a “flying sun” that will serve as the main source of light during the dinner. The event will incorporate elements of different time zones, economics, psychology, word processes and sustainability as these investors are interested in the blue economy. It will be truly amazing to play with the intensity and positioning of the sun to create an illusion of time dimension, distorting perception and reality and bringing attention to the pressing issue of climate change and our collective responsibility to address it.

Built as Project Witchcraft, the second Amels 60 has been delivered and named Entourage, and is set to undertake a busy charter season overseen by Moran Yacht & Ship.

 

Espen Øino designed the exterior of Amels 60, while the owner was heavily involved in the project and his changes included adapting windows to allow more light in. The owner worked with Canada-based studio Burdifilek on “a luxurious interior, notable for its sense of serenity”, according to Damen Yachting.

On a sunny day at the 63rd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), Jeanneau’s Merry Fisher 1295 Fly was extremely popular among visitors. In fact, it even earned a nomination included in the Best of Show awards, which was later broadcast in a one-hour programme on Fox Sports.

 

During FLIBS, the 41ft 2in yacht was constantly packed with new groups of people. The excitement was palpable when a family of four hopped onto the yacht.

The two young children dashed straight into the bright, open saloon and towards the sofa, while the parents looked relaxed, envisioning themselves sipping cocktails in the galley. Add in the comfortable, cosy cabins downstairs and it looked like they were at home. I smiled as I waited for my turn to inspect the new leader of the Merry Fisher range.

 

MAJESTIC MERRY FISHER

The overall length of the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly is more than 7ft longer than the 1095 and to reflect this, there are a host of new features and areas that clearly separate it from the former series flagship.

Triple 300hp engines provide the power

 

Firstly, it has three engines, not two, while the flybridge has a full seating area for up to five guests. The foredeck is a properly developed social area with integrated sun loungers.

 

Inside is a full-beam aft galley, more comparable to those seen on larger flybridge motor yachts. There’s almost 47 per cent more fuel, giving another indication of the step up in scale.

Equipped with triple 300hp Yamaha outboard engines, the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly looks powerful, sleek and modern. On the starboard side of the aft deck, the stainless-steel ladder with teak treads hung off the fold-down side, gleaming under the sun.

 

To get aboard, the starboard transom platform and gate can be used, while the portside opening gate is another option. The cockpit has an L-shaped sofa and flexible table, and blends seamlessly with the galley, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The choice of material for the table includes wood or fibreglass.

One feature that makes this range flagship stand out is the electronically controlled starboard terrace, which acts as a platform extending outwards towards the ocean. It provides more space for entertaining family, friends and guests, can also serve as a dedicated spot for suntanning or reading, and is the best place for jumping into the water.

 

Accessed by stairs from the cockpit, the flybridge provides a comfortable environment for unwinding while enjoying the sea view and is dominated by a J-shaped sofa to port and a smallish table.

There’s plenty of space to store cold beverages, with a refrigerator near the table and cup holders next to the seats.

 

The forward part of the three-sided sofa has a flexible backrest, so can be converted into companion seating while underway or whenever a forward view is wanted. On the starboard side, the helm features a minimal, no-nonsense control panel and is fitted with a Garmin display. Forward is a full-width sunpad, sheltered by the windscreen.

The cleverly designed foredeck is also ideal for sunbathing and reading, offering an integrated, three person sun lounger. The soft, supportive material of the sunpads makes it a perfect excuse for couch potatoes to continue their sedentary activity … outdoors! Whether it’s taking a nap under the sun or sitting there watching family members or friends swim, paddleboard or kayak, this is an ideal spot.

 

EXTENDED INTERIOR

The neutral, cream colour tone of the interior looks sophisticated and turns the attention of whoever is in the saloon to the ocean view.

The aft galley is equipped with kitchen equipment such as stove and sink. The countertop is extremely glossy and chic, while there are also electrical sockets for charging.

 

Even when you’re preparing food or drinks in this area, there’s still also plenty of space to entertain. Forward in the main lounge, the light-coloured wood and the fabrics of the C-shaped sofa to port accentuate the airy feeling of the space.

The natural light from the large windows enlivens the saloon, where people hang out, enjoy their food and engage in conversation.

 

To starboard, the large door next to the helm seat makes a difference when docking shorthanded, allowing easy access to the side deck. Moreover, the dual GPS screens, joystick and autopilot technology ensure the skipper has everything he or she needs.

The lower helm benefits from a starboard door

 

The model features Groupe Beneteau’s Seanapps technology, which has been included on all new Jeanneau yachts since September 2021.

 

The system allows the owner to monitor data about the yacht through a smartphone app. They include safety information such as the GPS position, battery level, tank levels, bilge levels and engine data; trip information such as distance covered, speeds and depth; as well as temperature and humidity inside.

Jeanneau’s team did a great job maximising the use of the space while leaving enough room to create a clear corridor that leads to the stairs to the lower deck.

 

The centreline stairs descend to a lobby that leads forward to the master stateroom with an en-suite bathroom, while to port is the bathroom shared by day guests and both guest cabins, which sit side by side midships. The wooden floor creates a natural ambience, while the soft, warm glow from LED lights along the edges of cabinets gives the interior space a modern twist.

The master stateroom has a large island berth and enjoys a lot of natural light from two side windows and a wide forward window, which all help to illuminate a beautiful, serene space. The reflection from the mirror above the headboard makes the space look larger. Facing the bed is a TV on the starboard side, while the en-suite is on port side and has a separate enclosed shower.

 

The guest cabins each have a large window and a mirror to help create a feeling of more space. The familiar glow from the LED lights again creates a relaxing, ambient environment. With three comfortable cabins, the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly is well equipped for three generations of a family or up to three couples to enjoy time away.

People in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia have lately been asking me, “Where have you been?” I’m writing this from Dubai, a place I now call home, and today I want to share my story. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was so privileged to enjoy efficiency, convenience, speed, seasonal weather, the ocean, green countryside and so much more.

 

In the middle of last year, for the first time, I was dreaming of a new destination after over two years of battling Covid restrictions and a lack of travel. I didn’t have any destination in mind, but I had the opportunity to travel to the Cannes Yachting Festival last September. Dubai was the stopover destination, and that flight changed the course of my life.

 

It was my first time in Dubai, my first steps in the Middle East. Without any planned itinerary, I visited the Museum of the Future, an interactive experience on a journey to 2071. Not only was I inspired by new ways of living, but I was also educated on how to help shape the world we live in.

 

Looking back at the history of Dubai, to where it is now and where it’s heading, I was captivated. I had an instant connection with this city. I love the energy and the vision. I was virtualising my future here, where we can interact together and be part of the plan to evolve together.

 

I spent half a day in the Museum of the Future, often sitting by myself and reflecting. The thought of living in Dubai started to enter my mind. After spending a week in Cannes, seeing my colleagues from shipyards in Italy for the first time since the 2019 show, I was longing for a greater connection to the world, so I decided to move to Dubai. A month later, I settled here.

 

LIFESTYLE DESTINATION

My passion has always been in hospitality. While completing my Hotel Management degree, I was working with chef Richard Ekkebus, the hotel’s Director of Culinary Operations and F&B. Over the years, I developed an appreciation for the connections between fine food, art and sustainability.

 

From organising the first Four Hands Dinner event by inviting top chefs in the culinary world to ‘MOvember’ every November, I recognised how those in the prestigious position of being at the top, whether in society or a corporation, can make a difference to others by giving back to society.

 

The organisation for the Four Hands Dinner with Virgilio Martinez Véliz (Peru), André Chiang (Taiwan), Ferran Adrià (Spain) and Gaggan Anand (India) were particularly memorable. I found being part of a big, well planned event so satisfying.

 

I had the opportunity to observe the top chefs closely. The way they mastered the tiny details helped me to better appreciate Sanlorenzo yachts later in my career. Chef Richard was my first mentor and I’m always grateful to have been a part of his team.

 

I then moved to the Hong Kong headquarters where I worked remotely with David Nicholls, the Group Director of Food and Beverage based in the London office. I still feel so fortunate to have worked with such a reputable industry leader.

 

I was tasked with developing future talents, preparing for the expansion of the hotel portfolio. Being guided to achieve small tasks to moving forward to a bigger goal laid the foundation for me to further develop leadership skills, the ability to build a system and optimise the processes.

JOINING THE YACHTING WORLD

I then had the opportunity to work with Simpson Marine. I had never even heard of ‘Shum Wan’ until I was asked to visit the office for an interview. I was immediately lured by the lush, green area and the idea of working in an office close to the sea – it was so peaceful and quiet.

 

I started my role as Sanlorenzo Sales Assistant in 2018. My desk and an empty cabinet were the beginning of my adventure in this industry. From that day, I was grateful to be provided with opportunities for self-development including participation in major boat shows in Singapore and Cannes.

 

I also worked on various events such as Art Basel Hong Kong, the Sanlorenzo x Rolls-Royce Cullinan Asia launch in Japan, Korea and the Philippines, as well as market activation across Southeast Asia.

 

I met so many inspiring individuals in the company, including Nick Stratton (Sanlorenzo Asia Sales Manager). At that time, he was new to Hong Kong, after many years in Singapore. We had a great synergy and were always looking for the next project.

 

Ewa Stachurska, now Group Marketing Director, was always there when I needed advice as a young woman aspiring to grow in the industry. She was always full of ideas, ready to share her experience and support me. I was surrounded by a group of likeminded colleagues with common values, always eager to share our passion for the sea with our clients.

 

After about a year in the role, I obtained my pleasure boat licence and started to explore the islands, enjoying activities from fishing to wakesurfing, and exploring new seafood restaurants and new hiking trails.

 

With over 250 islands in Hong Kong, the areas to explore never end. On my recent trip ‘home’ to the city, I visited the Chef de Yim Tin restaurant while on Yim Tin Tsai, a small island off Sai Kung that’s home to unique cultural heritage sites including two UNESCO award-winning attractions.

 

In the Covid era, clients have shown greater interest in boating, and I met many people who enjoy the yachting lifestyle. I assisted over 40 owners with new-build projects and pre-owned yacht purchases and noticed that spending time on board their yacht became a regular part of their lifestyle. I’m so happy to see this shift and a new way of living.

 

NEXT CHAPTER

The new chapter of my career as a yacht consultant focuses on offering tailor-made services offering uniquely differentiated experiences. My passion and visionary spirit have led me to the creation of a new concept, exclusively for building unforgettable experiences that provoke emotion and leave a lifetime of memories. I’m setting sail to embrace this new journey.

Sharon Chua has officially joined Hong Seh as a Yacht Broker and will work in the sales team headed by Della Pearce, Director of both Hong Seh Yachting and Hong Seh Marine.

 

 

Chua has been working with Hong Seh for over six months and last September she attended the Cannes Yachting Festival and helped organise the meet-and-greet event in Singapore with Sunreef ambassador Fernando Alonso as he visited the city to compete in the F1 Grand Prix.

She was also involved in the Ferretti Beach Out event on Lazarus Island in December, activity around SailGP’s Singapore Sail Grand Prix in January and the Ferretti Yachts 500 Open day at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove earlier this month.

 

 

Chua will focus on the sales of pre-owned boats and new models by brands grouped under Hong Seh Marine, comprising Sunreef luxury catamarans, Boston Whaler and Schaefer motor yachts, and Zodiac RIBs.

She will also assist with boat deliveries, support the after-sales team and assist the activities of sister company Hong Seh Yachting, which represents Ferretti Group brands Ferretti Yachts, Riva and Pershing.

 

Chua obtained her PPCDL (Powered Pleasure Craft Driving Licence) in 2003 and began her boat ownership journey last year.

Ferretti Group has launched the “ideal model” for an American owner who had “spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami”.

Ferretti Group has staged the launch of the first Pershing GTX116 for an American owner who has named the yacht Caffeine in honour of the ingredient that made his fortune. The yacht is painted a new shade of grey, with a special shade of blue for the deckhouse. 

“I spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami, but could never find one. Now, my ideal model is finally a reality thanks to the Pershing GTX116,” the owner said.

Ferretti Group’s Mondolfo facility on the east of Italy but 3km inland. The 116-footer was then put on a truck and transported to Fano, 30km up the coast, and will now undergo final outfitting and sea trials before heading to the US.

A design collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and its Engineering Department, the GTX116 is arguably the brand’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 and takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector.

Featuring a sleek, streamlined profile, the first GTX116 boasts the sporty power Pershing is renowned for, with a triple waterjet system 2,000hp MAN V12s plus waterjets providing hull one with a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots. The standard engines are three 1,800hp MAN V12 units.

The ‘Sport Utility Yacht’ is lifted into the water in Fano

As it provides both speed and space, the GTX116 has also been described as a ‘a performance SUV’.The yacht provides guests with 150sqm (1,615sqft) of outdoor areas. These include a 39sqm, teak-decked beach club protected by an electro-hydraulic taffrail that opens to connect the beach area with the swim platform, creating a huge space at the water’s edge.

The 40sqm sundeck, reached by two symmetrical outdoor stairways, has the upper helm station, generous spaces for socialising including a lounge area and large wet bar, plus a carbon hard top. There’s also a large Jacuzzi on the foredeck.

Lürssen announced the launch of the 145m Luminance, which superyachttimes.com says is the eighth-largest build by the world-leading German superyacht yard and ranked 15th overall.

The specialist online news agency said: “Construction of the top-secret superyacht Luminance began in 2018 before she was moved to outfitting in February 2021. Details about the motor yacht have been kept tightly under wraps, but she is estimated to have an internal volume of 9,000GT.

Luminance follows the launch and sea trials of the 146m superyacht Opera in November 2022. The builder has 10 other superyacht projects either under way or pending. These include the 137m Alibaba due in 2024 and the 122m Jag in 2023.”

Having kick-started the Oceanis Yacht series with the former 62, Beneteau followed up in 2020 with the Oceanis Yacht 54, the ‘Yacht’ designation differentiating the top-of-the-range offshore cruiser models from the rest of the Oceanis series, now ranging from the 30.1 to the 51.1.

 

During a test sail off Barcelona, we were seduced by the 54’s performance and manoeuvrability, which make it suitable for a family or a short-handed crew – the same thing a lot of the time.

The Oceanis Yacht 60 we discovered at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September is different because of its even more elegant silhouette. Its size and the lines of the rigid bimini cap give it a more imposing stature, more modern, racier, while early sales to Taiwan by Simpson Marine indicate its suitability for Asian waters and popularity among regional sailors.

 

Like its smaller sister, the hull design of the Oceanis Yacht 60 is from the drawing board of Italian Roberto Biscontini, who also designed the First 53, the biggest model in the First range.

Both helming areas have everything to hand

 

Beyond the pure performance, the balance under sail of these boats when under way creates a freedom for the yachtsman in the sense that one can achieve superb average speeds without being a great racer or even without pushing it, while your companions enjoy a comfortable ride.

 

The moderate angle of heel on all points of sail gives the impression of safety and serenity, which is what a ‘yacht’ is all about. But what else is needed to achieve this coveted status?

 

A DELIGHTFUL CENTRAL COCKPIT

As you step aboard, via a hydraulic gangway, the wide deck gives a natural ease of movement, helped by very accomplished ergonomics.

Lorenzo Argento, the Italian interior and exterior designer, has created modular relaxation areas that can be used in any situation. Under the rigid bimini, whose soft top can be retracted to enjoy either the sun or the stars, a central cockpit has been designed to provide easy circulation.

 

On either side of a main aisle, two tables can seat 10 people for dining or can be lowered at the touch of a button to become a lounger. Two further sun loungers are installed in this space under the retractable roof, while there are two more forward of the mast.

A beautiful aft deck completes the ‘relaxation’ areas, which avoid any mixing with the sailing zones. The sailing equipment is all grouped together at the helm stations so there’s no need to let go of the wheel for setting, trimming or reducing sail. Note that moving from one end of the deck to the other is accomplished without having to step over any coaming.

 

With stairs leading from the bathing platform and well-hidden steps on the side decks, moving around is simple and safe, even for the shortest of distances, giving the feeling of being in a flush-deck space.

 

INTERIOR OF HIGH STANDING

This ease of movement is confirmed by the gentle, wide companionway leading down to a very spacious interior, which includes a saloon, dining area and central galley across the width of the boat. The three en-suite and bathrooms are located at the ends of the boat.

The interior can be fitted out in walnut for a very intimate atmosphere or in oak, for a brighter effect, while the layout has been designed to make every move smooth and easy.

 

During our visit aboard, there must have been a dozen of us – including Argento – in the saloon, and no one was in each other’s way. The semi-circular chart table and its bucket seat allow the owner to enjoy life on board with friends.

The full-width galley, separated into two zones, has comprehensive work areas and equipment. On one side, there are plus-sized refrigeration facilities and on the other, the cooking and serving station bring the culinary possibilities closer to what you’d find ashore.

 

Each cabin has its own bathroom with separate shower. A door from the saloon transforms one of the aft cabin bathrooms into a toilet for day guests.

The owner’s suite forward is very spacious and bright, with four hatches in the deck. Its forward-facing island bed is forward of the en-suite bathroom and away from prying eyes, reinforcing the private aspect of the yacht, while the storage space includes a full wardrobe.

 

EQUIPMENT THAT MAKES A YACHT

These living areas and storage spaces – except for the wine cellar, which is a touch on the small side – contribute to the comfort expected on a larger boat. Nevertheless, it’s because of the sum of the equipment, the standard of finish, and the coherence of the whole that one recognises a real ‘yacht’.

Judging by this model, nothing is missing to create a comfortable onboard experience. Air conditioning, multimedia, quality upholstery and bedding, high-end blinds, a dishwasher and a washing machine provide almost every comfort you could wish for and most of what you need.

On the technical side, the Ship Control and Seanapps systems allow the skipper and/or owner to manage the onboard equipment both onboard and from a smartphone, improving safety and reducing concerns. The choice of in-mast furling – the AST system developed in association with Harken – eliminates the effort involved in tacking and trimming the sails, and limits heeling.

 

This, combined with the bow and stern thrusters that assist with port manoeuvres, are all part of the ‘easy sailing’ concept that the brand has been promoting for many years to encourage access to boating for even novice sailors.
