The exciting new Merry Fisher 1295 Fly – is by some length – the new flagship of Jeanneau’s most popular outboard range in Asia. By Valencia Tong.

The Merry Fisher 1295 Fly has an LOA over 41ft

On a sunny day at the 63rd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), Jeanneau’s Merry Fisher 1295 Fly was extremely popular among visitors. In fact, it even earned a nomination included in the Best of Show awards, which was later broadcast in a one-hour programme on Fox Sports.

During FLIBS, the 41ft 2in yacht was constantly packed with new groups of people. The excitement was palpable when a family of four hopped onto the yacht.

The saloon is forward of a full-beam galley

The two young children dashed straight into the bright, open saloon and towards the sofa, while the parents looked relaxed, envisioning themselves sipping cocktails in the galley. Add in the comfortable, cosy cabins downstairs and it looked like they were at home. I smiled as I waited for my turn to inspect the new leader of the Merry Fisher range.

MAJESTIC MERRY FISHER

The overall length of the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly is more than 7ft longer than the 1095 and to reflect this, there are a host of new features and areas that clearly separate it from the former series flagship.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

Triple 300hp engines provide the power

Firstly, it has three engines, not two, while the flybridge has a full seating area for up to five guests. The foredeck is a properly developed social area with integrated sun loungers.

Inside is a full-beam aft galley, more comparable to those seen on larger flybridge motor yachts. There’s almost 47 per cent more fuel, giving another indication of the step up in scale.

The cockpit has an L-shaped sofa

Equipped with triple 300hp Yamaha outboard engines, the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly looks powerful, sleek and modern. On the starboard side of the aft deck, the stainless-steel ladder with teak treads hung off the fold-down side, gleaming under the sun.

To get aboard, the starboard transom platform and gate can be used, while the portside opening gate is another option. The cockpit has an L-shaped sofa and flexible table, and blends seamlessly with the galley, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The choice of material for the table includes wood or fibreglass.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS Merry Fisher firsts include a drop-down side platform

One feature that makes this range flagship stand out is the electronically controlled starboard terrace, which acts as a platform extending outwards towards the ocean. It provides more space for entertaining family, friends and guests, can also serve as a dedicated spot for suntanning or reading, and is the best place for jumping into the water.

Accessed by stairs from the cockpit, the flybridge provides a comfortable environment for unwinding while enjoying the sea view and is dominated by a J-shaped sofa to port and a smallish table.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The fun flybridge features a J-shaped sofa, table, fridge, helm station and full-width sunpad

There’s plenty of space to store cold beverages, with a refrigerator near the table and cup holders next to the seats.

The forward part of the three-sided sofa has a flexible backrest, so can be converted into companion seating while underway or whenever a forward view is wanted. On the starboard side, the helm features a minimal, no-nonsense control panel and is fitted with a Garmin display. Forward is a full-width sunpad, sheltered by the windscreen.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The foredeck includes a sunbathing area with backrests, plus seats in the bow

The cleverly designed foredeck is also ideal for sunbathing and reading, offering an integrated, three person sun lounger. The soft, supportive material of the sunpads makes it a perfect excuse for couch potatoes to continue their sedentary activity … outdoors! Whether it’s taking a nap under the sun or sitting there watching family members or friends swim, paddleboard or kayak, this is an ideal spot.

EXTENDED INTERIOR

The neutral, cream colour tone of the interior looks sophisticated and turns the attention of whoever is in the saloon to the ocean view.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The full-beam aft galley is another Merry Fisher first

The aft galley is equipped with kitchen equipment such as stove and sink. The countertop is extremely glossy and chic, while there are also electrical sockets for charging.

Even when you’re preparing food or drinks in this area, there’s still also plenty of space to entertain. Forward in the main lounge, the light-coloured wood and the fabrics of the C-shaped sofa to port accentuate the airy feeling of the space.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The saloon features a C-shaped sofa, a dining table and an adjustable helm seat

The natural light from the large windows enlivens the saloon, where people hang out, enjoy their food and engage in conversation.

To starboard, the large door next to the helm seat makes a difference when docking shorthanded, allowing easy access to the side deck. Moreover, the dual GPS screens, joystick and autopilot technology ensure the skipper has everything he or she needs.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The lower helm benefits from a starboard door

The model features Groupe Beneteau’s Seanapps technology, which has been included on all new Jeanneau yachts since September 2021.

The system allows the owner to monitor data about the yacht through a smartphone app. They include safety information such as the GPS position, battery level, tank levels, bilge levels and engine data; trip information such as distance covered, speeds and depth; as well as temperature and humidity inside.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The master cabin with en-suite bathroom is in the bow

Jeanneau’s team did a great job maximising the use of the space while leaving enough room to create a clear corridor that leads to the stairs to the lower deck.

The centreline stairs descend to a lobby that leads forward to the master stateroom with an en-suite bathroom, while to port is the bathroom shared by day guests and both guest cabins, which sit side by side midships. The wooden floor creates a natural ambience, while the soft, warm glow from LED lights along the edges of cabinets gives the interior space a modern twist.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

One of the two midships guest cabins, which share a bathroom

The master stateroom has a large island berth and enjoys a lot of natural light from two side windows and a wide forward window, which all help to illuminate a beautiful, serene space. The reflection from the mirror above the headboard makes the space look larger. Facing the bed is a TV on the starboard side, while the en-suite is on port side and has a separate enclosed shower.

The guest cabins each have a large window and a mirror to help create a feeling of more space. The familiar glow from the LED lights again creates a relaxing, ambient environment. With three comfortable cabins, the Merry Fisher 1295 Fly is well equipped for three generations of a family or up to three couples to enjoy time away.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 1295 Fly, Valencia Tong, flybridge, 300hp, outboard, engines, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, FLIBS

The yacht can store boards and other water toys

Options like the Seakeeper 3 (SK3) gyroscopic stabiliser and the hydraulic retractable gangway are available to improve the quality of the boating experience. There are also options to install tropical-strength air-conditioning (36,000BTU), yet another reason why the new series flagship could prove as popular in Asia as other Merry Fisher models.

People in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia have lately been asking me, “Where have you been?” I’m writing this from Dubai, a place I now call home, and today I want to share my story. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was so privileged to enjoy efficiency, convenience, speed, seasonal weather, the ocean, green countryside and so much more.

In the middle of last year, for the first time, I was dreaming of a new destination after over two years of battling Covid restrictions and a lack of travel. I didn’t have any destination in mind, but I had the opportunity to travel to the Cannes Yachting Festival last September. Dubai was the stopover destination, and that flight changed the course of my life.

It was my first time in Dubai, my first steps in the Middle East. Without any planned itinerary, I visited the Museum of the Future, an interactive experience on a journey to 2071. Not only was I inspired by new ways of living, but I was also educated on how to help shape the world we live in.

Looking back at the history of Dubai, to where it is now and where it’s heading, I was captivated. I had an instant connection with this city. I love the energy and the vision. I was virtualising my future here, where we can interact together and be part of the plan to evolve together.

I spent half a day in the Museum of the Future, often sitting by myself and reflecting. The thought of living in Dubai started to enter my mind. After spending a week in Cannes, seeing my colleagues from shipyards in Italy for the first time since the 2019 show, I was longing for a greater connection to the world, so I decided to move to Dubai. A month later, I settled here.

LIFESTYLE DESTINATION

My passion has always been in hospitality. While completing my Hotel Management degree, I was working with chef Richard Ekkebus, the hotel’s Director of Culinary Operations and F&B. Over the years, I developed an appreciation for the connections between fine food, art and sustainability.

From organising the first Four Hands Dinner event by inviting top chefs in the culinary world to ‘MOvember’ every November, I recognised how those in the prestigious position of being at the top, whether in society or a corporation, can make a difference to others by giving back to society.

The organisation for the Four Hands Dinner with Virgilio Martinez Véliz (Peru), André Chiang (Taiwan), Ferran Adrià (Spain) and Gaggan Anand (India) were particularly memorable. I found being part of a big, well planned event so satisfying.

I had the opportunity to observe the top chefs closely. The way they mastered the tiny details helped me to better appreciate Sanlorenzo yachts later in my career. Chef Richard was my first mentor and I’m always grateful to have been a part of his team.

I then moved to the Hong Kong headquarters where I worked remotely with David Nicholls, the Group Director of Food and Beverage based in the London office. I still feel so fortunate to have worked with such a reputable industry leader.

I was tasked with developing future talents, preparing for the expansion of the hotel portfolio. Being guided to achieve small tasks to moving forward to a bigger goal laid the foundation for me to further develop leadership skills, the ability to build a system and optimise the processes.

JOINING THE YACHTING WORLD

I then had the opportunity to work with Simpson Marine. I had never even heard of ‘Shum Wan’ until I was asked to visit the office for an interview. I was immediately lured by the lush, green area and the idea of working in an office close to the sea – it was so peaceful and quiet.

I started my role as Sanlorenzo Sales Assistant in 2018. My desk and an empty cabinet were the beginning of my adventure in this industry. From that day, I was grateful to be provided with opportunities for self-development including participation in major boat shows in Singapore and Cannes.

I also worked on various events such as Art Basel Hong Kong, the Sanlorenzo x Rolls-Royce Cullinan Asia launch in Japan, Korea and the Philippines, as well as market activation across Southeast Asia.

I met so many inspiring individuals in the company, including Nick Stratton (Sanlorenzo Asia Sales Manager). At that time, he was new to Hong Kong, after many years in Singapore. We had a great synergy and were always looking for the next project.

Ewa Stachurska, now Group Marketing Director, was always there when I needed advice as a young woman aspiring to grow in the industry. She was always full of ideas, ready to share her experience and support me. I was surrounded by a group of likeminded colleagues with common values, always eager to share our passion for the sea with our clients.

After about a year in the role, I obtained my pleasure boat licence and started to explore the islands, enjoying activities from fishing to wakesurfing, and exploring new seafood restaurants and new hiking trails.

With over 250 islands in Hong Kong, the areas to explore never end. On my recent trip ‘home’ to the city, I visited the Chef de Yim Tin restaurant while on Yim Tin Tsai, a small island off Sai Kung that’s home to unique cultural heritage sites including two UNESCO award-winning attractions.

In the Covid era, clients have shown greater interest in boating, and I met many people who enjoy the yachting lifestyle. I assisted over 40 owners with new-build projects and pre-owned yacht purchases and noticed that spending time on board their yacht became a regular part of their lifestyle. I’m so happy to see this shift and a new way of living.

NEXT CHAPTER

The new chapter of my career as a yacht consultant focuses on offering tailor-made services offering uniquely differentiated experiences. My passion and visionary spirit have led me to the creation of a new concept, exclusively for building unforgettable experiences that provoke emotion and leave a lifetime of memories. I’m setting sail to embrace this new journey.

Ferretti Group has launched the “ideal model” for an American owner who had “spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami”.

The first Pershing GTX116 leaves the Mondolfo facility

Ferretti Group has staged the launch of the first Pershing GTX116 for an American owner who has named the yacht Caffeine in honour of the ingredient that made his fortune. The yacht is painted a new shade of grey, with a special shade of blue for the deckhouse.

“I spent years searching for a yacht that’s perfect for Miami, but could never find one. Now, my ideal model is finally a reality thanks to the Pershing GTX116,” the owner said.

The GTX116 is transported 30km up Italy’s east coast to Fano

“Five suites, a sunroof on the upper deck, a huge Jacuzzi, plenty of space for the crew, a large garage for tenders, and the best silver paintwork of all time. It has not only beauty and comfort but also the quality and safety that only a Pershing can provide.”

The 35m motor yacht with a 7.7m beam was built in
Ferretti Group’s Mondolfo facility on the east of Italy but 3km inland. The 116-footer was then put on a truck and transported to Fano, 30km up the coast, and will now undergo final outfitting and sea trials before heading to the US.

A design collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and its Engineering Department, the GTX116 is arguably the brand’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 and takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector.

Featuring a sleek, streamlined profile, the first GTX116 boasts the sporty power Pershing is renowned for, with a triple waterjet system 2,000hp MAN V12s plus waterjets providing hull one with a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots. The standard engines are three 1,800hp MAN V12 units.

As it provides both speed and space, the GTX116 has also been described as a ‘a performance SUV’.The yacht provides guests with 150sqm (1,615sqft) of outdoor areas. These include a 39sqm, teak-decked beach club protected by an electro-hydraulic taffrail that opens to connect the beach area with the swim platform, creating a huge space at the water’s edge.

The 40sqm sundeck, reached by two symmetrical outdoor stairways, has the upper helm station, generous spaces for socialising including a lounge area and large wet bar, plus a carbon hard top. There’s also a large Jacuzzi on the foredeck.

Indoor areas include a saloon, dining area, galley and indoor helm on the main deck, while the lower deck has a full-beam master suite, four more guest cabins and the crew quarters forward. The aft garage can contain a 5m-plus tender, jet-ski and other water toys.

Beneteau’s dynamic new sailing flagship

Beneteau’s dynamic new sailing flagship

The new flagship of Beneteau’s sailing models, the Oceanis Yacht 60 has already secured multiple sales in Asia, as Italian designers Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento take their collaboration to the next level. The Oceanis Yacht 60 features hull design by Robert Biscontini

Having kick-started the Oceanis Yacht series with the former 62, Beneteau followed up in 2020 with the Oceanis Yacht 54, the ‘Yacht’ designation differentiating the top-of-the-range offshore cruiser models from the rest of the Oceanis series, now ranging from the 30.1 to the 51.1.

During a test sail off Barcelona, we were seduced by the 54’s performance and manoeuvrability, which make it suitable for a family or a short-handed crew – the same thing a lot of the time.

The elegant hull has a length of almost 58ft, while LOA is closer to 62ft

The Oceanis Yacht 60 we discovered at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September is different because of its even more elegant silhouette. Its size and the lines of the rigid bimini cap give it a more imposing stature, more modern, racier, while early sales to Taiwan by Simpson Marine indicate its suitability for Asian waters and popularity among regional sailors.

Like its smaller sister, the hull design of the Oceanis Yacht 60 is from the drawing board of Italian Roberto Biscontini, who also designed the First 53, the biggest model in the First range.

Both helming areas have everything to hand

Beyond the pure performance, the balance under sail of these boats when under way creates a freedom for the yachtsman in the sense that one can achieve superb average speeds without being a great racer or even without pushing it, while your companions enjoy a comfortable ride.

The moderate angle of heel on all points of sail gives the impression of safety and serenity, which is what a ‘yacht’ is all about. But what else is needed to achieve this coveted status?

A DELIGHTFUL CENTRAL COCKPIT

As you step aboard, via a hydraulic gangway, the wide deck gives a natural ease of movement, helped by very accomplished ergonomics.

Beneteau, Oceanis Yacht 60, Simpson Marine, Cannes Yachting Festival, Taiwan, sales, Roberto Biscontini, Lorenzo Argento, Oceanis Yacht 54, First 53

The cockpit can be covered by a retractable awning

Lorenzo Argento, the Italian interior and exterior designer, has created modular relaxation areas that can be used in any situation. Under the rigid bimini, whose soft top can be retracted to enjoy either the sun or the stars, a central cockpit has been designed to provide easy circulation.

On either side of a main aisle, two tables can seat 10 people for dining or can be lowered at the touch of a button to become a lounger. Two further sun loungers are installed in this space under the retractable roof, while there are two more forward of the mast.

The symmetrical L-shaped sofas are partially protected

A beautiful aft deck completes the ‘relaxation’ areas, which avoid any mixing with the sailing zones. The sailing equipment is all grouped together at the helm stations so there’s no need to let go of the wheel for setting, trimming or reducing sail. Note that moving from one end of the deck to the other is accomplished without having to step over any coaming.

With stairs leading from the bathing platform and well-hidden steps on the side decks, moving around is simple and safe, even for the shortest of distances, giving the feeling of being in a flush-deck space.

INTERIOR OF HIGH STANDING

This ease of movement is confirmed by the gentle, wide companionway leading down to a very spacious interior, which includes a saloon, dining area and central galley across the width of the boat. The three en-suite and bathrooms are located at the ends of the boat.

Lorenzo Argento handled the interior design

The interior can be fitted out in walnut for a very intimate atmosphere or in oak, for a brighter effect, while the layout has been designed to make every move smooth and easy.

During our visit aboard, there must have been a dozen of us – including Argento – in the saloon, and no one was in each other’s way. The semi-circular chart table and its bucket seat allow the owner to enjoy life on board with friends.

The sofa and curved chart table are starboard of the main dining area

The full-width galley, separated into two zones, has comprehensive work areas and equipment. On one side, there are plus-sized refrigeration facilities and on the other, the cooking and serving station bring the culinary possibilities closer to what you’d find ashore.

Each cabin has its own bathroom with separate shower. A door from the saloon transforms one of the aft cabin bathrooms into a toilet for day guests.

The starboard side of the elegant, full-width galley

The owner’s suite forward is very spacious and bright, with four hatches in the deck. Its forward-facing island bed is forward of the en-suite bathroom and away from prying eyes, reinforcing the private aspect of the yacht, while the storage space includes a full wardrobe.

EQUIPMENT THAT MAKES A YACHT

These living areas and storage spaces – except for the wine cellar, which is a touch on the small side – contribute to the comfort expected on a larger boat. Nevertheless, it’s because of the sum of the equipment, the standard of finish, and the coherence of the whole that one recognises a real ‘yacht’.

Situated in the bow, the well-lit master cabin has a forward-facing bed

Beneteau has also provided an exhaustive list of options to set up your Oceanis Yacht 60 according to your expectations and sailing programme, all in accordance with the brand’s Premium service, which accompanies you through the moment of handover.

Judging by this model, nothing is missing to create a comfortable onboard experience. Air conditioning, multimedia, quality upholstery and bedding, high-end blinds, a dishwasher and a washing machine provide almost every comfort you could wish for and most of what you need.

The master en-suite buffers the bedroom from the saloon

On the technical side, the Ship Control and Seanapps systems allow the skipper and/or owner to manage the onboard equipment both onboard and from a smartphone, improving safety and reducing concerns. The choice of in-mast furling – the AST system developed in association with Harken – eliminates the effort involved in tacking and trimming the sails, and limits heeling.

This, combined with the bow and stern thrusters that assist with port manoeuvres, are all part of the ‘easy sailing’ concept that the brand has been promoting for many years to encourage access to boating for even novice sailors.

The aft garage can house a 2.8m RIB, while the forepeak can have a crew cabin

And because every detail is important, the garage allows you to effortlessly launch and recover a 2.8m RIB with an electric winch. There’s even a skipper/hostess cabin in the forepeak, yet another feature that shows all bases are covered and is another boost to its popularity in Asia.

Asia Yachting has been appointed as the exclusive Hong Kong dealer for Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans, in addition to its representation of Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts in the city. The increased scope means Asia Yachting is now representing all Fountaine Pajot sailing and power catamaran models in both Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Olivier Besson, founder and CEO of Asia Yachting, said: “We’re stoked about this expansion of partnership with Fountaine Pajot. The catamaran trend is just starting in Asia and we can foresee that it will keep on growing. The space and comfort a multihull yacht can offer are attracting more and more yacht lovers’ attention and demand.”

Asia Yachting’s first order of a Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran is a Tanna 47 set to arrive in the summer followed by an Alegria 67 later in the year. A redesign of the Saona 47, the Tanna 47 has more space including a 40 per cent larger flybridge of 75sqft that can entertain up to 10 guests at a time, a reconfigured, U-shape galley with increased storage, and the option of 5-9sqm of solar panels.

Kevin Corfa, Head of Fountaine Pajot Asia, said: “The Fountaine Pajot team feels very positive about this strengthening of our partnership with Asia Yachting. The increasing sales of our Motor Yachts range in Hong Kong in the past years has proven Asia Yachting has the right clientele and knowledge, so we’re confident this strategic expansion will be positive for both companies.”

The larger Ferretti Yachts models are built in Cattolica

CATTOLICA: LARGE FERRETTI YACHTS

From Mondolfo, it’s just a half-hour drive up the coast to Cattolica, a popular seaside resort town with a long beach lined with hotels. In contrast to Ancona and Mondolfo, the Cattolica site is dedicated to just one brand, Ferretti Yachts, although Custom Line models were built here in the past.

It’s Ferretti Group’s smallest production facility and set about 100m inland in the main town, surrounded by houses.

As such, following the completion of each Ferretti Yachts boat, local authorities need to clear and close two adjoining roads, so each boat can be wheeled along the streets and down to a Ferretti Yachts-branded travel-lift at the local marina. The company has a sales office at the marina and typically occupies several berths in front of the office for testing and sea trials.

Streets must be closed for yachts to be wheeled to sea

Opened in 2001, the 12,000sqm site has one large 7,000sqm building that includes offices and one large, well-lit production shed that includes a woodwork area and 16 assembly stations for the Ferretti Yachts 780, 860, 920 and flagship 1000, the biggest yacht that can be built in the facility.

The production layout is based on an island construction model, where each workstation is independent, and a completed boat can be moved out without disrupting the other stations. In January 2022, a fire broke out that affected three yachts, yet within three weeks, the facility was fully operational and staged its first launch of the year at the beginning of February.

About 300 staff and sub-contractors work onsite, and Ferretti Yachts sales staff say the site is working at full capacity to keep up with orders, which include at least a dozen sales for the 30m flagship, which debuted at the 2021 Venice Boat Show.

The nearby marina has a Ferretti Yachts sales office

The brand’s orders are split about 55 per cent in EMEA, 35 per cent in Americas and 10 per cent in Asia-Pacific. It’s worth noting that three of the first eight hulls of the FY1000 were sold to Asia: two to Taiwan and a customised version for mainland China.

FORLI: WALLY, HQ, MOULDS AND MORE

From Cattolica, it’s a 45-minute drive northwest to Forlì, which is 30km inland and 30 minutes away from the picturesque town of Cesenatico, where completed boats are delivered for testing and sea trials.

Forlì hosts the Ferretti Group headquarters and home of Wally

The 52,000sqm inland site in Forlì is home to the Ferretti Group headquarters, a production plant for the smaller Ferretti Yachts models (500, 580, 670 and 720) and Itama 62RS, the Group’s Plug & Mould Plant, a testing pool, paint halls and new Wally facilities currently producing the Wallytender and Wallypower models.

Upon entering, the Forlì site is dominated by a very large glass office building on the right, which houses the technical team, while across the car park is the company headquarters, which houses the Group’s engineering, purchasing, finance and administration teams.

Forli produces Ferretti Yachts 500-720 models, Itama 62RS, Wallypower and Wallytender

The 5,000sqm Plug & Mould Plant is one of the hidden keys to Ferretti Group’s ongoing success. Opened in 2006, its work shortens the lead time for new products and allows the Group to keep presenting an average of five to six new fibreglass models each year.

The plant, which has about 150 employees and sub-contractors onsite, develops all the tooling and hull moulds for each of the Group’s GRP models, constructs big GRP components and includes a CNC machine, 3D printing and a painting hall.

Ferretti Group’s remarkable Plug & Mould Plant

Recent hull moulds include the Wallywind110 sailing yacht with naval architecture by German studio Judel/Vrolijk, although both the Wallywind110 and custom Wally 101 – launching this year – are being built nearby by external companies.

The Plug & Mould Plant is a wondrous world for visitors, who can see and hear about future models before they’ve been announced. We found out about the Wallywhy100 well before it was publicised in December and found out about other new models like the 122ft … to be continued.

Ferretti Group acquired a neighbouring site to build the Wally facilities and in 2019 opened the first shed, which today has production lines for the Wallytender48 and Wallytender43. Each model is available with inboard engines or in an X version with outboards, a popular choice in the US market.

The multi-purpose Forli site also has painting halls

After hulls arrive from the sub-contractor, it takes about 50 days and 60 days to complete a Wallytender43 and Wallytender48 respectively, followed by about 20 days in dock in Cesenatico.

The neighbouring shed for the Wallypower58 opened in 2021 and both halls can operate with their front ‘doors’ completely open, offering ventilation and a view of the surrounding farmland. Wally motor yachts are offered in a variety of different colours including the popular gunmetal, other greys, silvers, greens and blues. Plans for the Wally site include a showroom and an office building.

SARNICO: RIVA’S HISTORIC HOME

From Forli, it’s a 300km, 3hr-plus drive northwest inland to the historic Riva shipyard at the southern end of Lake Iseo, set 185m above sea level and surrounded by gorgeous, wooded mountainside.

Set by Lake Iseo, the iconic Riva facility in Sarnico produces 27-68 models

With Bergamo to the west and Milan just over an hour away, the home of Riva has easy access to city life, but the sub-alpine lakeside setting of the Sarnico shipyard feels like another world. In contrast to the Group’s other production-dominated facilities, the 43,000sqm Sarnico site feels like a brand experience tour or a journey back in time.

Established by Carlo Riva in 1954, the site is where Riva’s iconic models of the 1950s and 1960s, such as the legendary Aquarama, were built on a large scale, establishing the brand as the boat of choice for royalty and film stars as la dolce vita gripped the nation.

A Riva 68’ Diable in front of La Plancia (the bridge)

Today, Sarnico produces all of Riva’s smaller models, from the 27ft Iseo to the 68ft Diable. These include the limited-edition Anniversario, which is based on the hull of the 33ft Aquariva, features styling inspired by the iconic Aquarama and was launched last year as part of the brand’s 180th anniversary.

The 17,000sqm of covered facilities includes numerous production sheds and four painting halls, hardware includes two jib cranes and a 50-tonne trolley, while the scenic waterfront offers 10 moorings.

Carlo Riva’s iconic office is a highlight of the Sarnico shipyard

One of the sheds is set up as a Riva museum and features several historic boats like an Ariston and a Triton, scale models, lots of photos and informative details on the brand’s history and boats. There’s also a separate workshop for restoring classic Rivas.

However, the focal point is the late Carlo Riva’s original office, which he designed himself and is a listed building, protected by the Italian Department of Cultural Heritage. Known as La Plancia (the bridge), the first-floor office protrudes from the front of the building like the prow of a yacht, suspended above the covered waterfront walkway and offering a 270-degree window views of the sheds, moorings and the lake.

A stunning Riva Lounge sets the scene

Below La Plancia and the other offices on the first floor is a beautifully designed Riva Lounge, with walls covered in photos, both historic and modern. Like the interior of a Riva yacht, the whole room features elegant furniture in stainless steel, leather and wood, racks display Riva accessories and memorabilia including F1 helmets, while a curved staircase leads to a mezzanine landing that continues the theme.

And if you’re lucky, you might even be invited aboard the last Aquarama produced (hull 784, launched in 1996) for a cruise on Lake Iseo to have lunch at the exclusive Riva Privée on the top floor of the Spirito Divino waterfront restaurant.

LA SPEZIA: NEXT-LEVEL RIVAS

The Riva story continues in La Spezia, one of Italy’s main yacht-building hubs along the country’s northwest coast along with Massa, Viareggio and Livorno, ensuring a strong supply chain and network of sub-contractors.

On the west coast, the La Spezia shipyard builds Riva models from 76-130ft

Ferretti Group acquired the waterfront facility in 2001, upgrading the shipyard before beginning yacht production in 2004. Today, about 550 employees and sub-contractors work on the 69,000sqm site, which has about 17,000sqm of indoor facilities including production sheds and two beautiful three-sided office buildings that overlook a series of berths covered by an enormous roof structure. A 400-tonne travel-lift is among the hardware.

The shipyard – which used to build some Custom Line yachts –today produces 76-130ft Riva models, which include the 76’ Bahamas Super and 88’ Florida from the Open range, plus the 76’ Perseo Super and 88’ Folgore from the Sportfly series.

The site also builds the fast-growing Flybridge series, which began with the 100’ Corsaro that premiered in Hong Kong in March 2017. Last year, the 24th unit was succeeded by the first 102’ Corsaro (Yacht Style Issue 66 cover), which fits in a range that includes the similarly in-demand 90’ Argo, 110’ Dolcevita and 130’ Bellissima.

The first 130’, the US-owned Janus, debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show last September, when the 299GRT model had already secured close to double-figure sales. The La Spezia facility has the capacity to build three units of the Bellissima at one time, having launched about 45 Riva Flybridge yachts in the past six years.

The 102’ Corsaro Super was launched last year and early sales include a unit for Taiwan

Ferretti Group is aiming to increase production at the site from just under 30 units a year to 35, an even more imposing task when you consider the 130’ Bellissima is now among the models.

As such, new production sheds, offices, showrooms and client areas – where buyers can discuss materials, décor, exterior colours and other options – are already under construction and set for completion in the coming year. Progress never stops.

The Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona on Italy’s east coast

When you’ve been whisked around Italy to see all six of Ferretti Group’s shipyards, the words “we never stop” come to mind. It’s a phrase that Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi frequently uses when speeding through progress reports from a company that oversees seven yacht builders: Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Custom Line, CRN, Itama and Wally, the company’s most recent brand acquisition.

Business was good in the post-Covid era, but it moved to a new level last year. Sales worth €942 million in the first eight months of 2022 marked a 36 per cent increase on the same period in the previous year, with roughly 50 per cent of the Group’s order book from EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), 40 per cent in the Americas and 10 per cent in Asia-Pacific.

Furthermore, the Group’s yacht production increased by about 20 per cent last year, while the total area of its facilities expanded over 14 per cent to more than 284,000sqm, with construction of new buildings evident in at least half of the shipyards we viewed.

Its workforce includes about 1,600 employees and 2,500 external suppliers, although they’re not all in Italy. Majority owned by China’s SHIG-Weichai Group since 2012, Ferretti Group has an Asia-Pacific headquarters and a service centre in Hong Kong, as well as a Shanghai showroom in the Bellagio Hotel.

In the US, the new-look Ferretti Group showroom in Florida was opened late last year during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Spanning about 2,000sqm, the facility is described by Ferretti Group as “the largest covered in-water showroom in the Americas” and includes a welcome area for customers, offices, 12 covered berths and a Riva Lounge.

The Group’s Fort Lauderdale facilities also include a 4,000sqm service yard that features 16 indoor and open-air berths, while offering service, refits and deliveries in collaboration with the adjoining marina.

In Italy, the Group is continuing to implement energy-saving technology in its shipyards, with its solar assisted trigeneration system reducing fuel and energy costs by about 20-25 per cent, an enormous saving when building on an industrial scale.

The trigeneration technology was first implemented at the CRN facility in Ancona, is being used on the new Wally facilities in Forlì and is also being rolled out on new buildings in La Spezia, where Riva models from 76-130ft are built. Reducing the carbon footprint of its production facilities is one of the Group’s main sustainability objectives, along with eco-friendly materials in its yachts and low-emission propulsion systems.

The Superyacht Yard in Ancona produces CRN, Custom Line, metal Riva and aluminium Pershing builds

“The trigeneration systems are a big investment. We pay in advance, but it comes back forever,” Galassi says. CCO Stefano de Vivo adds: “And it makes a lot more difference than putting a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system on a yacht.”

Modernisation efforts include new digital monitoring work stations with large, protected touchscreen TVs, which are being tested in Custom Line’s production sheds. If successful, the system could be gradually rolled out to other brands and shipyards, replacing the pen-and-paper tracking system.

Financially, Ferretti Group is flying high, with business soaring since Galassi and De Vivo took over as CEO and CCO respectively in 2014, two years after the Weichai acquisition. However, its huge network of shipyards in Italy are primarily the result of a series of brand acquisitions that started in the late 1990s.

The 62m Rio was one of three CRN launches in Ancona in 2022

Founded as an agent for Chris-Craft in 1968, Ferretti only built its first motor yacht in 1982. As product sizes increased and clients demanded more customisation, the company created the in-house Custom Line brand in 1996 to focus on yachts from 30m upwards.

Ferretti Group then expanded its portfolio quickly and dramatically, acquiring Pershing, CRN, Riva and Itama in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004 respectively. Meanwhile, it further expanded its network of shipyards by acquiring the La Spezia site in 2001, while the purchase of Wally was announced at the 2019 edition of Boot Dusseldorf, showing a company never content to sit still.

Today, its six shipyards are led in size by the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in the east-coast city of Ancona. Further up the Adriatic coast are the inland facilities of Mondolfo, Cattolica and Forlì, which is home to the company’s headquarters, although several of the Group’s most senior executives are based in Milan, Italy’s financial capital and second-biggest city.

Just over an hour’s drive east of Milan is Riva’s iconic Sarnico shipyard on scenic Lake Iseo, while the brand’s larger models from 76-130ft are built in La Spezia, in the heart of Italian yacht building on the northwest coast. The six facilities vary dramatically, whether it’s east coast or west coast, inland or seaside, in towns or farmland, mono-brand or multi-brand.

Built in Ancona, the Riva 50Metri will be succeeded by the aluminium-hull 54Metri

Furthermore, the full range of yacht models produced by the Group is remarkable, spanning from 8m to over 80m. And there’s a world of difference in the time and facilities needed to build a 27ft Riva Iseo compared to CRN’s upcoming 85m megayacht with a volume of 2,900GT – almost six times the size of the 52m Ciao launched last year.

ANCONA: SUPERYACHT YARD

Covering about 80,000sqm in Ancona, a port city with ferry services to the likes of Croatia and Greece, the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard is the crown jewel of the company’s production facilities. The historical home of CRN, it also houses all Custom Line production and in recent years has become home to the Riva Superyachts Division and Pershing’s aluminium builds.

Facing the Adriatic Sea, the eight hectares feature over 30,000sqm of covered facilities including nine production sheds and offices, a 670-tonne travel-lift plus a dock area offering 14 moorings for yachts up to 100m and protected by long sea walls.

Buildings under construction include facilities for visiting crew and a new office for CRN staff, separate to Custom Line employees, all part of a €50 million investment to upgrade and increase capacity in the shipyard. Typically, about 1,000 people work on site, a mix of employees and sub-contractors, with about half focused on Custom Line.

Custom Line staged 20 launches in Ancona in 2022

Set on the west side of the shipyard, Custom Line had just two sheds when its production was moved here in 2016, but now has five, with the newest three for the brand’s bigger models. One shed is dedicated to the Navetta 30, which succeeded the popular Navetta 28, debuted in late 2020 and already has five sales in Asia, with two already delivered to Hong Kong and one in Singapore.

Custom Line launched a remarkable 20 fibreglass superyachts last year including hull 10 of the Navetta 30 (hull 11 launched in late January 2023), the 25th Navetta 33, the 14th Navetta 37 and the ninth Navetta 42.

Among the Planing series, launches included the 15th unit of the Custom Line 106’ and hull eight of the 120’, but the biggest splash was the first hull of the flagship 140’, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival before appearing at the Monaco Yacht Show. The next units of the Custom Line 140’, including hull three sold to Hong Kong, are already in production.

With fibreglass hulls and superstructures built externally, Custom Line’s onsite build times range from nine to 12 months depending on model size, before yachts spend a month or two in the water for final outfitting, fine-tuning and sea trials.

STEEL, ALUMINIUM BUILDS

Despite being the quiet achiever among Ferretti Group brands, Custom Line also never stops, with its upcoming flagship Navetta 50 announced midway through last year. Hulls one and two are in build, but as it has an aluminium hull, its construction is being overseen by CRN’s technical team, with the first unit due in mid-2024.

CRN, which builds fully custom steel and aluminium yachts from 45-95m, is also on a roll. Launches last year included the 62m Rio (Yacht Style Issue 67 cover) and the 52m Ciao, which both had world premieres at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show and feature exterior design by Dutch studio Omega Architects.

The builder also launched the 60m CRN M/Y 141, an all-aluminium build designed by Nuvolari Lenard. The next project out of the shed will be the 72m M/Y 139, featuring an exterior by Andrea Vallicelli and interior by Nuvolari Lenard. This will be followed by the 67m M/Y 143, Project Maranello, which has exterior and interior design by Nuvolari Lenard and hybrid propulsion.

CRN signed two more projects last year: the 70m M/Y 145 and the 85m M/Y 144 (2,900GT), its biggest project to date, topping the 80.5m Chopi Chopi (2,363GT) launched in 2013. The hulls for

both new models should arrive in Ancona towards the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the third and last Riva 50Metri is in build following the launches of Race and Fifty in 2019 and 2021 respectively, while construction has begun on the all-aluminium 54Metri, which has been sold.

Production continues on the remarkable Pershing 140, the 43m, triple-waterjet aluminium superyacht with a top speed of 38 knots. Hull one, Chorusline, was delivered to its Hong Kong owner in 2019 and output has since been steady, with the Ancona shipyard scheduled to begin work on hull five early this year.

Launch of the first Pershing 140, an aluminium model now up to hull five

Following the “we never stop” mantra, Ferretti Group last year announced the Pershing 170, a 52m, sub-500GT aluminium tri-deck featuring an ‘all-season private terrace’, with the first hull arriving at the Ancona shipyard in early 2024. “It’s a busy shipyard,” Galassi says, with understatement.

MONDOLFO: DOMINATED BY PERSHING

Pershing’s main base is the futuristic-looking, 45,000sqm Mondolfo facility, which is about an hour’s drive up the coast, but about 3km from the sea. Opened in 2004, the fantastic, glass-fronted office building feels as high-tech as a Pershing, yet is located just a stone’s throw from where the brand began in a modest set-up over four decades ago, in an area better known for farming and wine.

The office rooftop offers a view of a small shed 150m away, where in 1981 Tilli Antonelli co-founded Cantiere Navale dell’Adriatico, which started to become recognised as Pershing after the 1985 debut of the Pershing 45 motor yacht designed with Fulvio De Simoni, who still designs for the brand. Based on this launch, Pershing will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025.

Highlights of the office building include internal access to a suspended walkway that offers a dramatic internal view over one of the site’s two similarly sized production sheds, A and B, which face each other. The site’s 13,000sqm of indoor facilities include an innovative 500sqm painting hall – big enough for the new GTX116 – where the vessels are powder coated.

The travel-lift, which carries up to 130 tonnes, completes operations with beaching and launching into the 2m-deep, 8m-wide test pool, which is just long enough to fit the 35m GTX116. Depth is no problem as its draft is just 1.45m, part of the appeal for the US-based buyer of hull one and the Italian owner of hull two.

Completed boats – which included the former Pershing 115 – are then put on a truck and transported to Fano, 30km up the coast, with the last few weeks of production typically spent on the water. The GTX116 is the brand’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 as it takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector.

It still boasts the sporty power Pershing is renowned for, with triple 2,000hp MAN V12s plus waterjets providing the 116-footer with a top speed of 35 knots, yet it has been described as “a performance SUV, the Lamborghini Urus of the sea”.

Mondolfo continues to build Pershing’s powerful X series, which comprises the 5X, 6X, 7X, 8X and 9X (92ft). The 7X premiered at Boot Dusseldorf in 2020 and has already secured close to 30 sales, while the 48-knot 6X that debuted at Cannes in 2021 is also proving hugely popular.

The Mondolfo site is running at 100 per cent capacity – “maybe 110 per cent” – according to Pershing sales staff, as the facility is also building some Wally and Itama models. These include the Wallywhy200 – an 89ft, 200GT model coming to Asia – Wallywhy150, Itama 75 and Itama 45RS.

Look out for the beautiful green hull used on the first unit of the Wallywhy150, the 150GT 79-footer set to debut this year.

Trixie LohMirmand, Executive Vice President – Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre

How did a Singaporean lady come to work as an organiser of the Dubai International Boat Show more than 15 years ago?
Dubai was looking for someone who had deep experience in large-scale events delivering significant economic impact, and who could drive change, rebuild teams and co-create strategies. At that time, I had been managing one of the world’s biggest aviation events serving the government and private sectors, so this positioned me suitably for this opportunity.

The Dubai leadership’s openness to creating achievements through collaborative innovation and actively seeking global talent diversity way back in the early 2000s is a hallmark of a progressive city intent on building super brands like the Dubai International Boat Show.

How did last year’s edition compare to others since you’ve been working on show?

It was an incredible feeling for the Dubai International Boat Show, after almost three decades, to finally be held in a world-class yachting marina, Dubai Harbour, befitting one of the globe’s most influential leisure boating events. We now can scale up and offer more quality hospitality services to welcome our clients and guests for an increasingly experiential time at the event.

What’s it like working with Dubai Harbour?

From accessibility, infrastructure, operations and logistics to the flexibility of Dubai Harbour’s supportive team and management, the organisation of the last edition was one of the smoothest we’ve had.

Dubai Harbour is located at the heart of the precinct gazetted as the international tourism and leisure hub in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. This makes it a most attractive and strategically unifying destination for the Dubai International Boat Show, which is a major contributor to leisure marine tourism.

Dubai Harbour hosted the Dubai International Boat Show for the first time in 2022

Hosting a big-scale, international boat show can be disruptive to a working marina’s daily operations, but the cooperation was impeccable between us and the Dubai Harbour team. With the support of all the government authorities, it produced one of the most memorable editions of the event.

What feedback did you receive about the venue and other aspects of the show?

Often, we need to balance the requirements of the superyacht builders with the medium and smaller scale boating companies in a regional event that serves the interests of all target groups. The common interest from all stakeholders is to leverage the venue and event offerings to further develop the leisure boating and tourism sector to grow its market attractiveness and relevance in the global economy, pursuing a sustainable strategy.

The Middle East’s leading boat show attracted 30,000 visitors last year

How did the number of exhibitors and yachts compare to past years?

The industry’s strong performance during the pandemic translated into a palpable growth of the event, as demand for leisure yachting grows. Last year’s edition also marked the return of many international companies who were excited to be back in the region to reconnect with customers as travel restrictions eased.

What can visitors expect at the 29th edition of the show from March 1-5, 2023?

We continue to build on the momentum generated at Dubai Harbour with a focus on congregating global boating professionals and stakeholders to explore innovative opportunities in positive ecological actions, socio-economic stimulation of sector growth, and leveraging Fourth Industrial Revolution technology.

Gulf Craft is traditionally the show’s leading exhibitor

Do you think the event will be bigger?

Tourism in Dubai had increased 134 per cent year on year, as of last October, and the solid collaboration model between government and private sectors locally and globally continues to strengthen the Dubai International Boat Show’s proposition as the region’s most influential leisure boating lifestyle event.

We’re set to achieve 25 per cent expansion in the coming edition as demand for boating advances, with authorities continuing to ease and modify tax, visa, access and movement rules and regulations for the yacht industry. Furthermore, the winter tourism campaign has gained remarkable traction.

Do you see a growth in international interest in the Middle East yachting market?

The attractive calendar of experiential events and festivities in Dubai and the region has created tremendous tourism appeal, enhancing yacht visits here. The attractive climate nine months of the year and the high liveability index of Dubai has drawn new residents and tourists into the sector, while the novel sea-land tourism offerings unique to this region continue to fascinate the world.

The Superyacht Avenue is one of the show’s most popular areas

Luxury yachting is spearheading the sector’s growth in the region and Dubai continues to rank first for HNWI (high-net-worth individual) wealth. Recent immigration-policy changes in the region put us ahead of the curve in the global competition for talent and investment, which helps accelerate expansion of the Middle East yachting market.

Looking ahead, how do you see links developing between Asia and the Middle East?

There are indications of increased movement of yachts between two of the world’s most interesting emerging hubs. With Asia now emerging from pandemic restrictions and the urgency to normalise business and lifestyle behaviours against increasingly yachting-friendly regulations, the rise in marine activities and collaboration is only expected to grow. The question is how much and how fast.

“My fascination for financial markets was thus replaced by an unrelenting drive to create an alternative, truly secure, wealth storage independent of politics and counterparties.”

Precious metals like gold and silver have been gaining prominence in the last few years. These commodities are becoming the preferred choice for retail investors to hedge against the impending recession. As a result of this growing interest, prices for gold and silver have risen more drastically such that people make a beeline to own bars of it.

Now, not everyone has the luxury of space to store gold or silver bars at home so that is how Silver Bullion and The Safe House come into play. Gregor Gregersen, the founder of the Silver Bullion, believes that more and more people will look towards building a robust precious metals portfolio and his company will be able to satisfy this demand for a secure and reliable storage facility.

Ahead, we speak with him to learn more about the precious metals market in the coming years and his motivation behind building one of the highest capacity vaults worldwide — The Reserve.

Hi Gregor, how did you become interested in precious metals, and could you tell us more about Silver Bullion and The Safe House?

I have been fascinated by the stock market since I was little. I became a stockbroker assistant in the US, and eventually ended up working with quants (math PhDs) at a bank’s structured product desk developing custom derivatives for institutions.

I learned to program some of the derivatives that have become our financial system’s little-understood, quadrillion-dollar foundation. These derivatives are complicated bets from different counterparties that offset each other to produce the desired behaviour. Mathematically they might be sound, but they have a fatal flaw in that they work only if all counterparties remain solvent.

This flaw became apparent in 2008 when Lehman Brothers’ US$35 trillion worth of derivative positions defaulted. Being twice the GDP of the United States, its impact brought the financial system within hours of collapsing.

I witnessed the consequences of this collapse, working as a senior data architect at a major bank in Frankfurt, and realised, with absolute certainty, that greed and incompetence had irreparably transformed our financial system into a fragile house of cards. It had become too leveraged and interdependent.

Physical precious metals, like gold and silver, were one of the few real wealth refuges that did not depend on somebody’s solvency, so they were in very high demand as people quickly bought them from every dealer or bank that still had stock.

By the time I decided to buy some physical silver, no physical bars were left. Banks and dealers would only buy back, and in the secondary markets, silver was trading at three times the official price.

I finally managed to buy a 1kg silver bar through a contact at the gift shop of the European Central Bank.

My fascination for financial markets was thus replaced by an unrelenting drive to create an alternative, truly secure, wealth storage independent of politics and counterparties.

This is still the drive behind Silver Bullion, which has delivered to clients over S$1.5 billion (or more than 730 metric tons) of gold and silver to Singapore, and The Safe House vault, which is safeguarding much of this bullion for our clients.

There are different types of commodities that one can invest in other than metals like agriculture and energy. Why are precious metals the preferred choice over other commodities?

Gold and silver are not just commodities. They are the world’s most enduring currencies (currency code XAU and XAG), are intrinsically valuable, practically indestructible, and cannot be printed out of thin air. They are effectively money that appreciates over time. Gold, for example, has appreciated on average by 7.8 per cent per year since 1970, from US$35.96 to around US$1,900 today.

Currencies backed by gold are limited by their gold holdings, which is why no government-issued currency is now backed by gold. Today’s fiat currencies’ worth depends solely on the perceived credibility of the issuer, allowing popular issuers to fund increasingly unsustainable deficits with no plans for repayment other than by issuing more currency.

Fiat currencies nearly always lose value over time through inflation, and eventually, become worthless once confidence in the issuer is lost. In contrast, gold and silver have endured throughout history as they have always been the neutral asset people trust, especially in a crisis.

To put it plainly, in a crisis, do you want to risk holding the next banana money or gold?

These monetary uses set gold and silver apart from other commodities, which must usually be consumed lest they decay.

Various news outlets have forecasted a recession in 2023. Why do you think precious metals are a good buy during a recession?

We are not heading into a normal recession characterised by negative to low growth and low inflation. Instead, most of the developed world is in a stagflation (defined as low growth and high inflation). On average, major currencies lost 9 per cent of their purchasing power in 2022. Such wealth losses have not been seen since the last stagflation ended in the early 1980s.

In a normal recession, the traditional advice is to purchase low-risk bonds, earn interest, and sit out the tough times. In a stagflation, however, buying low-risk bonds that pay 4 per cent or 5 per cent interest while your money loses an average of 9 per cent in purchasing power is not necessarily a good long-term plan.

While inflation might fluctuate year to year, inflation will remain uncomfortably high for the next five to 10 years because so much paper money was created over the past decade. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions are causing trade to recede, making goods harder to make and, therefore, more expensive.

This prolonged high inflation expectation is not just my opinion. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has made it clear in his 2022 National Day message that low inflation is not likely to return anytime soon.

As people see their dollar wealth erode, they will realise that they need to protect their wealth by buying something that tends to do well in a stagflation.

Precious metals tend to do well in stagflations. For example, during the last decade-long stagflation, the gold prices in US dollars surged from US$35.96 in 1970 to US$459 in 1981, representing an average 26 per cent increase per year for 11 years.

Central banks have already greatly increased their physical gold purchase in 2022. I think mainstream investors will slowly follow suit, ensuring that gold and silver will become increasingly popular this decade.

Why should one invest in silver and could you share with us the outlook of silver in the future?

Silver was the first global trading currency and, along with gold, the foundation of most modern currencies, including the US dollar and Pound Sterling. Silver literally means money in Spanish (plata) and French (argent). The Chinese characters for a bank (银行) literally refer to a place to store silver.

As an industrial metal, silver is indispensable, being the best electrical and thermal conductor and a potent antibacterial agent. Our mobile and electronic devices all have silver in them, which cannot be easily substituted away. When these devices reach end-of-life, they are often discarded in landfills, making the silver unretrievable.

So whereas gold is carefully hoarded, much silver has been literally thrown away a gram at a time over the past 50 years, leaving global silver reserves a tiny fraction of what they used to be. As of 2022, the identifiable above-ground silver inventories are only 52,000 metric tons compared to over 190,000 metric tons of gold that the World Gold Council estimates to exist.

Besides being surprisingly scarce, silver is also historically undervalued. In nature, the ratio of silver to gold is about 16 to 1, which was also the exchange ratio between silver and gold for most of history. However, gold is trading at 75 times the price of silver today, making silver over four times cheaper than its historical mean.

I would define silver as scarce, indispensable, undervalued, and largely forgotten by the mainstream. Most of my personal money is invested in silver, as I expect it to strongly outperform gold as we enter the next precious metal bull market.

Could you share with us why you have decided to build The Reserve in Singapore instead of another place like Malaysia?

Throughout history, when a country with unsustainable debts can no longer monetise their debts effectively, they tend to make drastic changes, usually at the expense of savers.

For example, during the Great Depression in 1933, the US suddenly made gold ownership illegal. It forced individuals to sell their physical gold to the government at US$20.67 per troy ounce or face up to 10 years in prison.

Essentially holding gold in the United States in 1933 became like holding cocaine today, a highly illegal and dangerous endeavour.

Following this gold nationalisation, the government increased the gold price to US$35 per troy ounce, effectively creating 70 per cent more US dollars for the government to spend at the expense of gold holders (today, gold is trading at US$1,850).

People who held their gold outside the United States were unaffected. So, it is important to store gold in a stable, well-funded, trusted jurisdiction that is unlikely to nationalise gold in a crisis.

Storing gold and silver in Singapore, which has no net debts and a fully funded pension system, rather than in highly indebted Western countries whose unfunded pension systems I consider to be a ticking timebomb, is a prudent choice.

Singapore is politically stable, has very low corruption, well-enforced property ownership rights, and investment-grade precious metals are exempted from taxes, which are all good things.

Singapore is also well-regarded internationally. It has a strong regional military presence comprising of over 420,000 active and reserve personnel and a military budget over three times that of Malaysia.

These are the reasons we are investing so heavily in Singapore.

The Reserve is going to be one of the biggest precious metals storage facilities in the world, why have you decided to embark on such a large-scale project and what’s your vision behind this project?

History tends to repeat and recurring cycles can be identified. Every 80 to 100 years, a new superpower replaces the prior one, and every 30 to 40 years, reserve currencies tend to get into a crisis (e.g. the US dollar in the 1970s) and are either saved or replaced. Such cycle transition periods are always painful and often involve wars.

I believe that this decade we will be facing such a transition period and that this will cause great demand for ownership of liquid physical assets, stored in safe jurisdictions in a transparent manner.

The Reserve is built to address this demand by:

  • Raising Awareness — Physical asset ownership is compelling, but it is difficult to capture people’s attention. The Reserve’s iconic structure symbolises the resurgence of physical assets while providing an attractive venue for related services and events.

  • Protect Physical Wealth — Since 2009, we have ceaselessly prepared for the next systemic crisis. The Reserve will be the culmination of our efforts and the go-to destination for holistic wealth protection solutions.

  • Bigger scale, lower costs — The facilities’ high floor loading and 15 high-security vaults allow us to lower per-ton-fixed storage costs by more than an order of magnitude compared to our prior facility. This enables us to efficiently store silver and valuable industrial metals in addition to gold, art, luxury timepieces, and other high-value items.

What are some services that will be offered on The Reserve that make it different from the others in the market?

Most vaults tend to be austere, inaccessible places. The Reserve has a more open, welcoming design and is cleverly compartmentalised to maintain high security without intrusiveness for most visitors.

We are currently storing over S$800 million in precious metals. Visiting the vault will be an experience. In our main 20,000 sqft vault room, we will store silver, and other valuable metals stacked 12 metres high. Walking through this room will be like walking through a canyon of silver.

Our clients can visit one of two labs in the facility that test the metals to learn about the five non-destructive testing processes we developed to authenticate and guarantee the metals.

Also, on site is The Xcess, a specialised bonded watch vault that will have 2,000 watch winders to store high-end timepieces optimally. These watches can be authenticated and maintained at a 2,000 sqft watch workshop within The Reserve. Once stored, the watches can be collateralised by the owner or sold to the highest bidder. Over time we expect to store a very exclusive watch collection.

The Reserve will additionally store art, wine, and whisky. We have approved zoning permission to conduct high-value international auctions in the facility. The facility will be a good venue for exclusive events.

Once this facility is fully operational, we expect third-party banks, family offices, and wealth managers to make use of the facility as well.

The Reserve will redefine what a vault can be.

Silver Bullion offers a unique secured P2P loan service where stored bullion can be collateralized for loans. What are the reasons behind offering this service?

Our secured P2P loan platform was launched in 2015. It allows customers to use their stored, authenticated assets as collateral to obtain loans peer-to-peer. The lenders are other customers who want to lend out cash for interest. Silver Bullion acts as an escrow and provides the platform to match lenders and borrowers based on a bid/ask process.

With this service, our clients have an added option of how they can use their stored assets. Perhaps they have investment opportunities and need liquidity without selling their bullion.

Having passed compliance checks to become storage customers, they can then obtain loans quickly since the collateral is a liquid physical asset. The system is designed to be very safe for lenders, and over the past eight years, we have had no defaults and averaged a yearly interest rate of just 4 per cent pa.

The loan platform has matched nearly half a billion Singapore dollars over 13,000 plus loans since its launch.

The company has been around since 2009, what are your biggest takeways from those years?

Maintaining a high level of trust and transparency with our clients is paramount. Sales are secondary to always building and maintaining this trust.

Strict AML/KYC and authentication processes are also indispensable to protect our customers and us. This is particularly true as we grow and invest so much capital into The Reserve.

Lastly, we are more than a conventional bullion dealer. We provide advanced systemic wealth protection solutions whereby precious metals play a big role. This important mindset distinction leads to, sometimes, radically different approaches compared to traditional gold vaults and dealers.

If you weren’t in the precious metals industry, what would you be doing for a living?

I would be developing smart software (a kind of AI) to optimise vegetable growth efficiencies for urban farming and franchise the systems. I hope to do this in the future .
