Internationally acclaimed automotive auction house, Gooding & Company, has announced its newest consignments to the annual Pebble Beach Auctions taking place this August, including a highly sought-after 1933 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster. This marks the American auction house’s 19th year collaborating with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the premier car show of the motoring world.

Live auctions run from 18 to 19 August, though hopeful buyers outside Pebble Beach, California can now make their bids online as well.

“Collectors are always in search of exceptional classics to enter into the most prestigious international concours d’elegance, and these outstanding, stylish and prewar European cars are all tickets to the very best events in the world,” said David Brynan, Gooding & Company senior specialist. “These exclusive, limited production and one-off cars are candidates for top awards at events like Pebble Beach, Hampton Court, Amelia Island, and Villa d’Este. The Type 55 Roadster, in particular, is especially desirable as it is among the best examples of an extremely exclusive Bugatti suitable for both concours d’elegance and driving events like the 1000 Miglia for which it has been accepted for 2024. This upcoming event is quite fitting for the car which served as both a motor show display and a competition car in-period.”

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 1931, Jean Bugatti’s Type 55 was an ultra-high-performance machine capable of reaching a top speed in excess of 177 km/h. The Type 55 Roadster is considered the spiritual successor to the Type 43 Grand Sport, a road-going Grand Prix car integrating the mechanics of the Type 35B with sporting coachwork.

Between 1931 and 1936, Bugatti built 38 Type 55 units, of which 14 were originally fashioned with Jean Bugatti’s sublime roadster bodywork, including the unit to be auctioned come August. Of the 13 other surviving roadsters, just seven are understood to have retained their original coachwork and matching-numbers mechanical components, making them the precious few original Jean Bugatti Roadsters around today.

Factory records state that the Type 55 to be on auction was completed in March 1933 with chassis number 55231. It was first exhibited on Henri Sagnier’s Bugatti and Talbot stand at the inaugural Foire d’Alger, a major national trade fair held in Algiers, Algeria. The roadster was eventually sold to its first private owner, Juvénal Emile Jarron, the son of prominent Algerian doctor, Juvénal Constant Jarron. Its racing debut came shortly after in the 1935 Bouzaréa Hill Climb where it was driven to an overwhelming victory.

55231 would remain in Algeria throughout WWII, passed around several local owners before eventually coming under the ownership of Bernard Viallo who recommissioned the roadster in the late 1950s much by himself. Viallon sourced parts directly from the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, driving the Type 55 until 1960 when it entered a long period of on-and-off restoration works. This bout of restoration works would only be fully completed in March 1986, with 55231 finding itself in the personal prized collection of fashion icon Ralph Lauren himself.

During this time, 55231 was shipped to English marque specialists, Crosthwaite & Gardine, for final restoration works where it was refinished in a chic new black with dark blue coves. The roadster remained with Lauren till 2003, switching owners twice more before reaching Dutch connoisseur Ton Meijer, who commissioned a mechanical restoration performed by esteemed French automotive group, Ventoux Moteurs Engineering.

55231 would eventually grace the stages of concours d’elegance shows around the world at Villa d’Este, Pebble Beach and notably, on Bugatti’s own stand during the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. The historic roadster would finally land in the hands of Henri Chambon who repainted it in the original black and yellow colour scheme. An inspection by leading Bugatti historians, Pierre-Yves Laugier and Mark Morris, concluded that 55231 retains its original chassis frame, engine, gearbox, rear end, and coachwork, making it one of best maintained units of this exceptionally rare breed of Bugatti.

The next owner of 55231 will also be pleased to find in their possession an accepted candidate for two upcoming 1000 Miglia events — Warm Up USA in Washington, DC taking place at the start of November 2023 and the classic 1000 Miglia across Brescia to Rome, Italy come 2024 (subject to registration and entry fees).

With the introduction of the Speed Six in the late 1920s, Bentley promised speed, comfort and reliability all in a single marque, instilling in the driver a level of confidence unmatched in its day. A total of 182 Speed Six units were built during its two-year production run, with three chassis lengths available to accommodate running coachwork ranging from Le Mans tourers to formal saloons.

To be auctioned is a 1930 Bentley Speed Six Sports Saloon, chassis LR2778. It is a handsome coupé originally bodied with coachwork from English H.J. Mulliner & Co. and first owned by Sawai Man Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur, India. LR2778 remained in India until 1937 when it returned to London to join the collection of Dennis Becker. The Becker family enjoyed the car on many travels in the coming decades, including a 1950 European tour. LR2778 would remain with the Beckers until 1974, when it was purchased by Ian Finlator who owned the car for nearly 30 years. Finlator participated in various events with the Speed Six, including the 1985 Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique and the 1994 opening ceremonies of the English Channel Tunnel where it served as the British automotive representative.

LR2778 would pass through several hands before making its way to its current owner in 2010. The consignor embarked on an exhaustive restoration of the car, beginning with an extensive documentation process overseen by a foremost voice of authority on Bentley history, Dr. Clare Hay. The works were carried out by Vintage Bentley specialist Graham Moss of R.C. Moss, who restored the Speed Six to its original specifications.

LR2778 finally made its post-restoration debut at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, claiming three awards including a Second in Class win, the Montagu of Beaulieu Award for the most historically significant British car, and the J.B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Award for Most Elegant Closed Car. This iconic Bentley comes to the auction equipped with its original chassis, engine and coachwork, making it a car fit for the most sophisticated collections.

The Bentley S-Type was introduced in 1955 following the successful R-Type, incorporating significant improvements which now stand as notable features to the Vintage Bentley collector’s eye, such as a longer wheelbase, electrically adjustable rear shock absorbers, lighter steering and a four-speed automatic transmission. A total of 3072 S1 units were built until the line ceased in 1959, with around 150 units equipped with custom coachwork. 431 of the S1s were built as high-performance Continental model utilising a lighter aluminium coachwork with slightly under a quarter of them fitted as drophead coupés — the ultimate Bentley S1 Continental body style.

The 1958 Bentley S1 Continental, chassis BC42LDJ, to be auctioned is one such drophead coupé, configured specially for a left-hand drive by the now defunct English coach builder, Park Ward, which was then backed by Rolls-Royce. BC42LDJ was part of a special 31-unit production with this now collector’s edition left-hand drive configuration. It is also believed to be one of just three fitted from scratch with both powered steering and soft top.

Upon completion, the BC42LDJ was first displayed at the 1958 Amsterdam International Motor Show where it was purchased by a buyer going by the family name of Mayne in Brussels, Belgium. It remained in Europe till 2005 when it was imported to the United States by Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist, Vantage Motorworks. Vantage Motorworks’s documentation file at the time indicated a history of extensive maintenance work including new paint and plating and an engine rebuild.

BC42LDJ would finally reach the hands of its current consignor in 2014, and has since been carefully maintained and regularly exercised by their team of in-house technicians. Presented beautifully in its original shade of Steel Blue, this 1958 S1 Continental Drophead Coupe will be the ultimate mid-century British luxury cabriolet on auction come August.

Engineered by Alfa Romeo’s brilliant Vittorio Jano in 1934, the 6C 2300 was originally intended as a more affordable alternative to its cousin, the 8C — the “C” stands for how many cylinders the engines had. The 6C 2300 featured a 2.3-litre twin-cam inline six engine, while its 1935 “B” series edition included a completely redesigned chassis with independent suspension front and rear, hydraulic brakes and an improved gearbox.

The 6C 2300B was offered in three iterations: the long chassis (Turismo/ Lungo), the short chassis (Corto), and the high-performance short chassis (Pescara/ Mille Miglia). In total, Alfa Romeo built fewer than 900 units of the 6C 2300B through 1938.

To be auctioned in August is a 1937 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300B, chassis 814047, one of 81 of the Turismo models. Featuring coachwork by Turin-based design firm, Carrozzeria Pininfarina, the chassis was fashioned with a one-of-a-kind cabriolet body designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont, widely regarded as one of the most influential Italian designers of his time. This Pininfarina cabriolet features a streamlined front end with bullet-shape headlamps and Revelli’s signature bow nose, visually highlighting its aerodynamic design. Upon completion, the cabriolet was photographed and illustrated in the 28 February 1938 issue of L’Auto Italiana and debuted at the 1938 International Auto Show in Berlin.

Passed around various European collectors, 814047 resided in Switzerland for half of the century before relocating to France in the 1990s. In 1996, it was acquired by one of Italy’s foremost Alfa Romeo collectors, Dr. Luca Savoia, who had it handsomely restored to its original burgundy with red leather upholstery and a tan soft top. This one-off Alfa Romeo cabriolet of great style and distinction has never been exhibited in the US, making it a fitting entrant for the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

1938 Peugeot 402 Darl’mat Special Sport Competition Roadster

Émile Darl’mat was an automobile businessman who made a name for himself working with designer Georges Paulin and coach builder Marcel Pourtout in the development of the Eclipse, a Peugeot equipped with the first technically retractable hardtop. Driven by a desire to elevate the Peugeot brand, Darl’mat became so respected that Peugeot gave him access and resources to create his own Peugeot sports car. Thus it came to be that Darl’mat would birth one of the most enigmatic Art Deco styled sports cars of all time.

The Peugeot 402 Darl’mat debuted at the 1936 Paris Motor Show with several of them competing in the 1937 and 1938 24 Hours of Le Mans. From the total of 104 Darl’mats built in coupé, convertible, roadster, or competition roadster styles between January 1937 and June 1938, only 30 remain known and intact today. To be auctioned in August is a 1938 402 Darl’mat Special Sport Competition Roadster, chassis 400248, originally built with an alloy body in a baby blue finish for a racing driver by the name of Dorothy Patten. Intended for driving in the United Kingdom, 400248 is one of the very Darl’mats with a built in right-hand drive. It also has doors, which most other racing Darl’mats do not possess.

Patten raced 400248 in 1939 where it charmed both English and French onlookers. 400248 was finally purchased by the consignor in 2017, its restoration entrusted to historian and restoration expert, David Cooper in Bristol, Wisconsin. 400248 was thoroughly researched and returned to the configuration as raced by Patten in 1939: an original set of competition-specification brakes were found and reinstalled and the coachwork’s stunning baby blue was faithfully reproduced. This gorgeous, classic sports car embodies the tale of Dorothy Patten’s fascinating years as a racer and carries in its design DNA the entrepreneurial spirit and creative innovation of Darl’mat from a remarkable chapter of Peugeot’s early motorsport history.

Alongside these offerings, the Pebble Beach Auctions will present a sporting 1927 Bentley 6 1/2 Tourer (Estimate: US$900,000 – $1,200,000), a bespoke 1932 Bugatti Type 49 Roadster (Estimate: US$900,000 – $1,200,000) featuring one-off coachwork by Henri Labourdette and a 1928 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A S Landaulet (Estimate: US$500,000 – $700,000) with multiple CCCA First Place Awards and two Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Class Awards. The Pebble Beach Auctions will be broadcast live. Bidders can register now.

The M8 can reach 20 knots and cruise at 15 knots with twin Volvo Penta D8-600 engines

If luxury real estate could float, it would look and feel like the Prestige M8, the new 65ft flagship of the French shipyard’s M-Line of multihull motor yachts. Big-city life lived large is the first thing you think when boarding, such is the space and the glam that surrounds you. Or imagine a gleaming penthouse crossed with an ultra-exclusive beach club.

Only aboard a multihull motor yacht like the M8 can you mix polished chrome and wide-open views with an easy-going pieds dans l’eau lifestyle. This floating home away from home might leave you thinking that you never want to go back to your house again.

The yacht has beam of 29ft and an Opacmare transformer central platform

A quick look at the numbers can explain the feeling of space and solidity you get when you board the M8, which was designed by longtime Prestige collaborator Camillo Garroni – also behind the M48 – and features naval architecture by Marc Lombard.

Start with an LOA of 19.82m and combine it with a beam of 8.85m (29ft), and you get plenty of length and width, which equals lots of floor space and a steady ride, a perfect combination for old salts and land lubbers alike.

OUTDOOR ZONES

Boarding the M8 is as easy as stepping out of a door and into a different dimension. You feel suspended somewhere between the air and the sea in a space where an abundance of glass and reflective surfaces can almost leave you wondering where you’ve landed.

The wide aft platform can be raised to extend the aft cockpit

The Opacmare transformer central platform can be raised to extend the floor space in the aft cockpit and create a suspended balcony over the sea.

Lower it at the push of a button and it becomes the central section of the beach platform, an ideal spot for sunning, launching toys or even storing the tender. Lower it even further into the water and it makes swimming and retrieving toys a breeze.

The cockpit, which owners can furnish with loose pieces as they please, is separated from the saloon by sliding glass doors. Railings and transom gates are also glass and there are glass inserts in the fashion plates.

The flybridge can be set up with dining to port and a lounging area to starboard

Everything is slender, glittering and visually barely there, yet you sense solidity and security underfoot. It’s an ideal combination when at sea. The temptation is to swarm all over the boat, up the stairs to the fly, down the side passages to the foredeck, because everything is easily available and well connected. And there’s no shortage of space for conviviality and relaxation.

Accessed by stairs on the port side of the cockpit or a gorgeous see-through staircase on the starboard side of the saloon, the large flybridge has a wet bar and outdoor kitchen, and the main helm station. Guests can choose to set up a port dining area and a starboard lounge under the hard top, and can furnish the aft end entirely as they please.

With its height and views, the flybridge is usually like the icing on the cake of a yacht, but aboard the M8 the foredeck is the top spot – even if it isn’t literally so.

The stunning foredeck has a wide sunbathing area and an innovative sunken bow area, with seating on all four sides

Designed on two levels, the foredeck’s social areas start with a very wide sun pad under the saloon windscreen and a truly fabulous aft-facing, C-shaped couch sunk into the bow, with a smaller sofa opposite.

Sitting there, cruising along with only air between you and the sea, is wonderfully relaxing and truly satisfying in a way that only feeling like the master of your little universe can be.

SENSATIONAL SALOON

Back to the stern and a centrally placed bar is a buffer area that serves both the cockpit and the saloon, another expansive, open space that owners can set up as they chose.

Forward view of the saloon, which starts with a full-width lounge

While the first hull in the M8 series has the galley fore and starboard in the saloon with a small helm station next to it, owners can also opt to leave this corner zone as an ‘all play’ area and have the galley below, towards the aft of the starboard hull.

Either way, the saloon is truly vast, with expansive glazing and slender, open structural elements that subtly define the different areas while leaving views and visual lines free and open.

Port view of the dining table and owner’s-suite stairs

Decorated by Valentina Militerno de Romedis with loose furnishings by Pininfarina, the interiors are bright, serene and functional, with sliding side doors increasing the indoor-outdoor feeling.

Forward, a central staircase leads from the saloon down to the full-beam owner’s cabin, a 35sqm (380sqft) suite that comes complete with a double bed, an en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe to port, and a study and relaxation area to starboard.

The centrally placed bed is laid sideways to the centreline, facing the starboard hull windows, an unusual arrangement that only this cat’s extreme stability makes feasible.

Aft view of the saloon, showing the aft bar that can be shared by guests in the cockpit

On either side of the saloon, staircases lead down into the hulls. Owners can choose between a variety of layouts and guest sleeping arrangements, such as with or without a galley, a TV room, an extra crew cabin or a VIP suite instead of two guest cabins to port.

Regardless of the chosen configuration, the spacious full-beam owner’s suite forward is a constant as are two crew cabins fully fore, accessed via hatches in the bow.

While the Prestige team chose space and volume over speed when designing the M8, the boat’s performance in terms of efficiency and ease of use is very respectable. Equipped with twin Volvo Penta D8-600 IPS engines, the boat has a top speed of close to 20 knots, a range of about 350nm at a cruising speed of 15 knots and turns on a dime.

Port view of the full-beam owner’s suite, where the bed faces the starboard windows

Special attention was paid to soundproofing these already relatively quiet engines, while an efficient thermodynamic air-conditioning system keeps emissions to a minimum. With a set-up like this, you can enjoy tootling around in comfort and safety, taking all the comforts of home with you yet leaving behind things like heeling and seasickness.

Furthermore, the M8 is also available in a ‘silent’ version, with solar panels and lithium battery bank, and this model is scheduled to appear at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

If you find yourself looking fondly at the M8 over your shoulder once you step back on land, you’ll see that the Garroni-designed exteriors recall the Prestige look while avoiding that certain visual clumsiness that plagues so many catamaran designs. And recalling your time aboard, you may well find yourself standing on the ground but walking on air.

Yachting Pages’ Tried & Tested series evaluates the AquaDart Nano sea scooters in Phuket, in the first part of a two-part series on iAqua’s sea scooters.

It’s not feasible for yacht owners, captains and engineers to try out a whole range of toys in a real world situation before making a purchasing decision, so we do the hard work for them. In this Tried & Tested, we joined forces with iAqua in Phuket to test its complete range of exhilarating dive scooters.

With over 25 years of design and manufacturing experience, and as a leader in lithium-ion battery safety, iAqua creates high-performance, technologically advanced underwater scooters that can be used with or without scuba diving equipment.

A team of experienced testers (including professional scuba divers) rated and reviewed the AquaDart Nano and AquaDart Pro series in line with useful metrics to help buyers determine which of the eight models is best suited to their requirements.

The following report runs through the pros and cons of each luxury scooter before revealing the overall winner. Without further ado, here are the reviews of Tried & Tested with iAqua.

RANGE: AQUADART NANO

Ranging in price from US$5,830-$7,490, the AquaDart Nano series includes the 450 Sport, 520 Explorer and 620 Max. Nano models are 50 per cent lighter than their competitors, 30 per cent smaller than AquaDart Pro models and easily transportable, all without comprising on their excellent performance. Even our child tester was able to lift the Nanos out of the water without help!

iAqua, Yachting Pages, Tried & Tested, Phuket, Thailand, iAqua Sea Scooters, Part 1, AquaDart Nano, AquaDart Pro, sea scooters, 450 Sport, 520 Explorer, 620 Max

The market’s lightest sea scooter, the Nano weighs in at just 22kg due to its patented Dual-Jet technology, allowing it to glide through the water effortlessly and making it easy to store on board and move on/off the yacht or tender. Despite requiring less space, it still delivers outstanding performance, reaching 20kmh in just three seconds.

The Nanos are easy and safe to use, with single-operation control triggers and a bright five-inch display that’s visible even in strong sunlight.

Front and rear lights on all the Nano models allow for risk-free and enjoyable night-time riding, and with a system that intelligently manages the power level, it’s capable of delivering an excellent performance in any depth up to 45m without the fear of being caught out with a flat battery.

It can also be used for scuba diving with weight belts to counteract the buoyancy. With a run time of up to 100 minutes (depending on the model), the Nano models may not operate in the water for as long as the AquaDart Pro range, but make up for it with convenient weight and size. It can be used anytime, anywhere and by anyone.

iAqua, Yachting Pages, Tried & Tested, Phuket, Thailand, iAqua Sea Scooters, Part 1, AquaDart Nano, AquaDart Pro, sea scooters, 450 Sport, 520 Explorer, 620 Max

So, what did the testers say about the AquaDart Nano range? “Much lighter and smaller” … “Very user friendly” … “More buoyant than the Pros” … “The battery life is super impressive” … “Although not as fast as the Pros, I felt much more comfortable moving it around the rocks”.

AquaDart Nano 450 Sport

Available in white, the AquaDart Nano 450 Sport is quick and nimble. Although it might not meet the speed and power levels of the other Nano models, it can be stored away easily and is extremely light when it comes to manoeuvrability. This makes it a great option for those looking for quick, easy fun with family and friends.

For convenient and effortless fun in the water, the AquaDart Nano 450 Sport rated highly with our testers for its smaller size and fun factor. Voted ‘Best for Children and Beginners’, it’s light and agile, and therefore easy for children to manoeuvre in and out of the water.

Its lower speed also reassures parents about their child’s safety, although the speed and depth can be restricted on all iAqua models. This model would not be the first choice for scuba divers looking to dive at night or in murky waters due to the lack of on-board gyroscope.

AquaDart Nano 520 Explorer

With a practical low weight ideal for transporting and storing, the AquaDart Nano 520 Explorer offers a unique experience, delivering a speed of up to 17kmh and a thrust of 520 Newtons. Although it may not be the fastest Nano model, it’s an excellent choice for those looking for a water scooter that boasts range and endurance. This model is available in white, orange, blue and silver.

iAqua, Yachting Pages, Tried & Tested, Phuket, Thailand, iAqua Sea Scooters, Part 1, AquaDart Nano, AquaDart Pro, sea scooters, 450 Sport, 520 Explorer, 620 Max

The AquaDart Nano 520 Explorer was well received by our testers, who found it easy to use and fun to ride. This model is ideal for rental companies and great for those wanting to use it at the beach due to its convenient weight and size, as it’s easy to transport and move in and out of the water.

Although it doesn’t quite reach the speeds of the Nano 620 Max, it’s a great all-rounder. It’s also recommended that an AquaDart Fast Charger is purchased alongside the toy to allow for quick charges in-between uses.

AquaDart Nano 620 Max

The AquaDart Nano 620 Max is all about the speed, with six gears and a thrust of 620 Newtons. While it may not live up to the power of the higher-spec AquaDart Pro models, it certainly delivers an excellent performance considering its light weight.

This model can be fully charged from empty in just 60 minutes (10 minutes faster than the other Nano models) and has an extra five minutes of run time. This speedy dive scooter comes with an AquaDart Fast Charger and is available in white, orange, blue and silver.

Agile and easy to manoeuvre, the AquaDart Nano 620 Max was a hit with our testers due to its light weight and impressive speed. As it can easily be moved into the water, testers could still enjoy the pace and power it has to offer without compromising on convenience.

iAqua, Yachting Pages, Tried & Tested, Phuket, Thailand, iAqua Sea Scooters, Part 1, AquaDart Nano, AquaDart Pro, sea scooters, 450 Sport, 520 Explorer, 620 Max

Awarded ‘Best for Yachts Less Than 20m (65ft)’, the AquaDart Nano 620 Max is small enough to be easily stored on board, but still fast enough to please those who want an adrenaline-pumping experience.

A record 430 yachts started the bruising 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet, a 695nm course from Cowes around the Fastnet Rock and on to Cherbourg.

The Fastnet Challenge Cup is awarded to the overall winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race on time correction. Success is dependent upon possessing the skills and ability to race one’s yacht at its full potential, whatever the weather or sea conditions. In a 695nm race, luck plays a part because the wind is not even across the course all the time.

Remaining focused and committed throughout takes passion, belief and determination. The Swiss entry Caro, a Botin 52, joins an illustrious list of yachts that have won this near 100-year-old race. Max Klink’s crew deserve their place in the history of this fabled contest, worthy winners at the 50th edition, setting themselves apart from the remainder of a highly competitive, record fleet.

The Rolex Fastnet Race is always an examination of determination and endurance. The 2023 race has been no exception. Throughout the largest fleet to ever participate, 430 yachts, crews have faced a variety of conditions from the extreme and arduous to the benign and frustrating.

First held in 1925, the Rolex Fastnet Race is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Rolex has partnered the event since 2001 and the biennial offshore race is one of the foundations of the Swiss Watchmaker’s six-decade-long association with the sport of yachting.

The Italian boutique superyacht builder will display a new 50m yacht at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, where it will announce the third of three recent sales.

Tankoa will exhibit the 50m Grey at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, which will be held from September 27-30.

The fifth hull in the Italian shipyard’s Francesco Paszkowski-designed S501 series, Grey was delivered this year and features a spectacular outdoor cinema on the foredeck and interior design by Giorgio Cassetta. The Genoa builder describes Grey as “substantially different from her sister ships and heavily customised to meet her owners’ needs”.

Also at the Monaco Yacht Show, Tankoa will announce a major full-custom project, one of three recent sales that mean the shipyard’s delivery slots are full until 2026.

The other two sales were for yachts being built on spec: the sixth hull of the S501, sold to a European owner, and a T450, for a South American owner, due for delivery in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The two superyachts are among at least eight projects that Tankoa expects to deliver in the next two years (click for article).

With a growing order book, Tankoa recently expanded its footprint by acquiring a site adjacent to its existing facility. The additional area includes around 3,000sqm of covered space that will be dedicated to specialist carpentry, painting, joinery and the production of custom Tankoa-branded pools.

In addition, the shipyard is building new administrative, technical and production offices, while plans include further increasing production capacity by reorganising two existing sheds so three yachts can be built simultaneously.

The hulls and superstructures of its yachts are built in an external facility in La Spezia, but with Tankoa hoping to build four to five units a year, the builder continues to search for an additional production site.

Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Tankoa, said: “It has been a very busy but rewarding few months for Tankoa with these new sales. They have created more pressure to expand our production capacity and we’re making good progress in that direction with the latest acquisition in Genoa and other opportunities in the pipeline.”

The shipyard’s scheduled next launch is the first T450 designed by Giorgio Cassetta, which could splash towards the end of this year.

Beneteau is developing the Antares 12, the new flagship of an enclosed weekender line that starts from the Antares 6 (18ft 1in) and was formerly headed by the 11 and 11 Fly models (32ft 6in).

Featuring an overall length of 42ft 7in and a beam of 12ft 5in, the Antares 12 is 10ft longer than the series’ former flagship and can accommodate up to eight guests. It will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17 before its US debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 25-29.

Beneteau, Antares, 12, 6, 11, 11 Fly, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Alexis Chas

Engine options comprise twin 400hp Mercury Verado V10 engines with an integrated joystick and triple 300hp Mercury Verado V8s. The yacht has lower and upper helms, the option of a Seakeeper gyro, and Groupe Beneteau’s Seanapps system to keep owners connected to their boat.

Accessed from the aft platform or by a starboard bulwark door, the covered cockpit has an L-shaped sofa to port and a folding table, while a starboard panel folds out to provide a balcony and easy access to the water. The foredeck has a triple integrated sunpad with an adjustable backrest.

Beneteau, Antares, 12, 6, 11, 11 Fly, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Alexis Chas

Sliding cockpit stairs lead to the large flybridge, which has a J-shaped dinette aft, wet bar, helm seat and companion seating, with the whole area able to be covered by a bimini.

A three-leaf cockpit door can be opened to access the wheelhouse. The saloon has a C-shaped dinette to port, with an adjustable backrest able to transform the forward end into companion seating. The table is also able to be lowered to convert the dinette into a double berth. To starboard are a full galley and helm station, with centreline stairs forward.

Beneteau, Antares, 12, 6, 11, 11 Fly, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Alexis Chas

The owner cabin in the bow is spacious and bright, with detailed trims, and has its own en-suite bathroom, as does the VIP guest cabin to port. A modular third room to starboard can be used as a single or double-berth cabin, or act as a storage room.

Alexis Chas, Antares Product Manager, said: “Designing a new Antares requires a keen sense of detail and balance. The new flagship of the line is no exception. The layout and equipment have been designed to optimise the feeling of space and comfort, and to improve the number of things you can do with the boat.

Beneteau, Antares, 12, 6, 11, 11 Fly, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Alexis Chas

“Versatility forces you to look for the right balance between indoor spaces and outdoor circulation, between opening to the elements and protecting passengers, and between performance and ease of use. Thanks to a close relationship with our customers, we’ve succeeded.”

The second Pershing GTX116 was recently launched in the port of Fano and was built for the US market, like the first unit. Hull two is painted a classic Pershing grey, with a special shade of blue for the deckhouse. The GTX116 will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17.

A collaboration between Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design and Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department, the GTX116 has a triple water jet propulsion system and a top speed of 35.5 knots with three MAN V12-2000 engines.

The ‘sport utility yacht’ has a 35m hull with a beam of 7.7m and offers 150sqm of outdoor space. The garage can contain a jet-ski and two water toys, while the 39sqm beach club has a teak deck protected by an electro-hydraulic taffrail that opens to connect the beach area with the swim platform, creating a huge space at the water’s edge.

The 40sqm sun deck, reached from the stern area via two outdoor stairways, features outdoor furnishings including modular sofas by Minotti. The aft cockpit has an extendable fixed table, two teak tables further aft and, in this second unit, a large bar unit. The foredeck includes two sun loungers and a circular six-person Jacuzzi.

Pershing, GTX116, Fano, MetalBorder, Frau, Listone Giordano, Minotti, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, Ferretti Group

The main deck contains the spacious lounge and includes a conventional dining table, unlike the first model, in which the owner chose a bar area. The taupe oak parquet by Listone Giordano matches warmly coloured furnishings including a sand-coloured Frau sofa.

Entered from the saloon, the galley is larger than on the previous unit and contains three fridges. The cupboard doors are in warm colours, such as ivory with tone-on-tone colour dots.

Pershing, GTX116, Fano, MetalBorder, Frau, Listone Giordano, Minotti, Cannes Yachting Festival, Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, Ferretti Group

The lower deck contains four guest cabins including a master suite featuring a king-size bed by Frau with pecan-coloured finishings and ivory accents, again fitting the palette of warm colours used throughout this second unit. The bathroom contains two regular showers, a central waterfall shower and two entrances, along with a herringbone mosaic by MetalBorder.

One of the driving forces behind the emergence of Phuket’s yachting scene, Dowden recently passed away but his work on the island lives on.

Andy Dowden

Andy Dowden, one of the stalwarts of the Phuket sailing and yachting scene, passed away on July 22. After a three-day funeral and a cremation ceremony, his ‘last sail’ was scheduled for July 27 as his ashes were scattered from a boat in Phang Nga Bay.

Dowden was involved in multiple yachting companies in Thailand since 1989, sailed in and helped organise many key regattas in and around Phuket, co-founded the PIMEX boat show and Phuket Raceweek regatta, and was one of the founders and co-authors of the Southeast Asia Pilot cruising guide.

Many tributes have been posted on Dowden’s Facebook page (click to visit), while his life and time in Phuket are outlined in Scott Murray’s 2012 article, Sailing the High Seas (click for original article). Excerpts of the article are reproduced below:

Friends pay their respects

From Somerset in the UK originally, Andy studied structural engineering at Bath University and worked for a decade in that business including time spent on the Thames Barrier.

In 1982, he embarked on a two-year around the world sailing cruise on his 46ft sloop Buccabu with his wife Jenny, business partner Reg and three others. They left from Poole in Dorset. Things went well until they hit the Red Sea, where near Elat they ran into engine trouble, a big storm came up and sunk their boat.

Two of the crew abandoned ship at this point. Luckily, the boat was insured, so Andy flew home and filled a container with parts he needed to fix the boat. The repair took eight months and then the remaining four crew (Andy, Jenny, Reg and Thelma) sailed into Port Sudan, where they spent the next four months operating a dive charter. Andy says the area has “the best diving in the world”.

From Port Sudan, Buccabu sailed down the Red Sea, eventually winding up in Sri Lanka where it stayed for a while doing sail and dive charters, mostly for friends who had flown in from the UK. Buccabu then headed off for northern Sumatra and wound up in Phuket in November 1984 with just Andy, Jenny and Reg remaining. They camped in Phuket for the high season, becoming the charter boat for the former Pansea Hotel (which became The Chedi then The Surin).

In April 1985, they set off again, heading down to Malaysia and Singapore before heading over to Borneo, Sabah and Sarawak and then to the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. In September, they landed in Cairns, did a bit of sailing in eastern Australia and the Barrier Reef.

Reg was ready to move on and Jenny wanted to go home and start a family. However, Andy wasn’t ready to go home, so the trio decided to sell the boat and put it on the market in Sydney around Christmas time.

After paying the import taxes, they found a prospective buyer, who put down a deposit on the boat, but the Aussie dollar tanked and Andy decided to keep the boat and buy out Reg. Andy and Jenny sailed back through Papua New Guinea (doing three months of charter there) and Indonesia before arriving in Phuket in November 1986, when Jenny returned to England.

Andy hired a crew and for the next couple years operated sailing charters out of Phuket, linking up with Jan Jacobs at Pansea Yacht Services. In 1989, Vincent Tabuteau and his company Asia Voyages wanted to build the Mekhala, a river boat based in Bangkok, so Andy took off to the ‘Big Mango’ for a year, where he built two Mekhalas.

Then Asia Voyages decided to start a joint-venture with Aman Cruises called Amanpuri Yacht Services, but they needed a place to service, store and fuel their boats so they decided to form a yacht management service with Pansea Yacht Services and Jan Jacobs and Andy.

The group formed Phuket Yacht Services, first in Bang Tao, in high season, then in low season they acquired some land in Laem Phrao, and this became their main depot (which is now Yacht Haven). They had a jetty, fuel supply, water supply, and workshop – it was the first marina in Phuket. In the beginning, there were four boats from Asia Voyages and six from Aman Cruises.

In 1991, Phuket Yacht Services became Sunsail’s representative and received seven new boats from the company. It was the first bareboat fleet in Thailand. In 1993, Sunsail sent over 12 used boats from another fleet in the Seychelles. As Sunsail had 19 boats in country, they decided to send their own man in, and in 1995 Kevin Quilty arrived to oversee their operation. Sunsail stayed at Laem Phrao until Boat Lagoon opened a couple years later.

In 1997, a Thai company decided to take over and expand the Laem Phrao marina, renaming it Yacht Haven, buying out Andy and Jan and the holding company Thai Marine Leisure. Andy moved down to Boat Lagoon and became their resident contractor for four years while Jan operated Charters with TML.

In 2002, Andy joined forces with Grenville Fordham and Image Asia, and they decided to stage a boat show in Phuket called PIMEX (Phuket International Marine Exhibition). The first one was held at Boat Lagoon in 2003, around King’s Cup time, and it went well, so the two decided to stage a regatta, Phuket Raceweek, first held in 2004.

Grenville eventually grew tired of the boat show, so he bought out Andy and kept the regatta, while Andy was left with the boat show. In 2007, his first year running the show solo, Andy moved PIMEX from Boat Lagoon to the Royal Phuket Marina, where it was held in December of 2007 and 2008, and January of 2010 and 2011.

In 2007, world-famous sailor Shirley Robertson interviewed Andy for CNN’s MainSail television programme and this tweaked the interest of the Informa Group, who among other things run the Monaco Yacht Show. Discussions ensued and Informa bought the show from Andy in 2008, leaving him with a paid salary to keep running it.

As of 2012, Andy was involved with many of Phuket’s regattas. Besides starting Six Senses Phuket Raceweek with Grenville, he has been the President of the Phuket King’s Cup (running the racing side of the regatta for many years), has been on the committee for the Bay Regatta and plays a key role in the Superyacht Rendezvous.

Andy’s two-year sailing sojourn turned into a full-time job in the marine leisure business, and the yachting community in Thailand has benefited immensely from his savvy and knowledge. Thanks for not going home, Andy.

Sunseeker has revealed new imagery of its new 75 Sport Yacht in the Mediterranean, where the yacht showed off the power and performance of a dynamic model able to reach 40 knots with the upgraded option of twin MAN V12-1900 engines. The yacht has an overall length of 75ft 8in (23.06m), a beam of 17ft 8in (5.38m) and a draft of 6ft 2in (1.87m).

An extensive upgrade of the 74 Sport Yacht, which is still available in its XPS version, the 75 Sport Yacht has a spectacular sports bridge, a long indoor-outdoor social area on the main deck, an aft starboard garage for a Williams SportJet 395, and a lower deck with three en-suite guest cabins, lower dinette or extra cabin, and two crew berths.

The big sister of the 65 Sport Yacht had a low-key world premiere at the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show in Germany in January and is part of Sunseeker’s line-up at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17.

Sean Robertson, Sunseeker International’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We are thrilled to see the 75 Sport Yacht at home in its natural environment. This beautiful motor yacht is destined for hosting large groups of friends and family, for an unforgettable boating experience. From the well-equipped sports bridge with two seating arrangements to the generous interior and bright lower galley and saloon, the 75 Sport Yacht is a beautiful yacht within the Sunseeker range.”

The stern features a hydraulic lifting platform for direct water access while the tender garage houses a Williams SportJet 395 fitted with an integrated tender recovery roller system for easy launch and recovery. Beautiful integrated deck lighting ensures visibility at night while offering a warm ambience and striking appearance.

The aft cockpit has a J-shaped seating area, a rise-and-fall folding table finished in carbon-fibre, an aft sunpad with a large Seabob stowage locker underneath, as well as the option of a control station. The foredeck offers a C-shaped sofa and island sunpad along with speakers, drinks holders and storage.

The extensive sports bridge provides a vast entertainment space with two C-shaped seating and lounging areas, twin-seat helm station, four waterproof Fusion Marine speakers, and a wet bar with a water tap, refrigeration, optional barbecue grill and ice maker.

To access the interior, the cockpit door slides to starboard and descends with the window to unite the cockpit with the saloon and create an extensive indoor-outdoor environment. The saloon features bold interior styling and contemporary furniture crafted from wood, carbon-fibre and stainless steel, all illuminated with dimmable mood lighting.

The configuration of the interior and the material selections are customisable. The standard arrangement includes a C-shaped sofa and a fold-out table to starboard, with a large television unit to port. As well as expansive glazing on all sides, there’s a panoramic sliding sunroof above the forward area, which includes a twin-seat helm and L-shaped companion seating, and stairs to the lower deck.

Below deck, the lower galley is to port and features high-quality Miele appliances, a fridge-freezer, and dedicated cabinetry for crockery, cutlery and glassware. A 20-bottle wine cooler can also be specified. Forward is an L-shaped dinette or a fourth cabin with Pullman berths.

The three en-suite guest cabins comprise a VIP cabin in the bow, a convertible twin/double to starboard, and a full-beam master midships, where port side options include two seats and a breakfast table, a chaise longue or a storage unit to match the starboard side.
