Sunreef Yachts has announced that its second 80 Sunreef Power Eco, Sol (Issue 72 cover story), features a 990kWh battery capacity that makes it the biggest among sub-24m leisure boats.

Describing Sol’s battery bank as having “long battery life, more power, optimised weight and a compact size”, the Polish builder says the almost 1mW hour of energy powered by composite-integrated solar panels gives the powercat e-motoring autonomy for close to 300nm.

For longer journeys, the yacht’s owners can use the range extender, which will allow them to enjoy transoceanic range.

The boat’s charging system and its ability to transform any voltage available in harbours around the world adds a convenience and versatility for global cruising.

Sunreef’s dealers in Asia include Hong Seh Marine in Singapore and Lee Marine in Thailand.

Again organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the latest Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup offered competitors “sun, big waves and big breeze”.
Words: Quinag; Photos: Rolex

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Since the early 1980s, maxi yacht owners and sailors have been drawn to the Costa Smeralda and specifically the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Considered the perfect sailing package, the event unites first-class organization, a majestic sailing environment and the world’s leading maxi yachts and professional crews.

Rolex and event organiser the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) have enjoyed a close partnership for nearly 40 years. The longevity of this collaboration has been at the heart of the event’s continued success and evolution. Support for the organization of the week-long regatta is provided by the International Maxi Association (IMA).

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The 2023 edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be considered a special vintage. Four days of racing offered the full repertoire of the Costa Smeralda sailing experience, from the strong breeze, big waves and robust sea state of the regatta’s initial exchanges to the light, unstable conditions which closed proceedings.

The Maddalena Archipelago’s myriad of race courses feature numerous narrow passages and rocky outcrops. On such testing fields of play, sailing powerful yachts at high speeds requires total synergy in teamwork and deft boat handling skills.

Sailors, drawn from the cream of professional sailing talent, were left enthralled by the week’s competition. Former Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Mike Sanderson, part of the afterguard on Bella Mente, was one such example.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

“The location is so special,” Sanderson said. “Sun, big waves and big breeze. For so many teams this is the pinnacle event of their year. We have worked all year to develop the boat to be ready for this regatta.”

For Mitch Booth, two-time Olympic medallist, overall Rolex Middle Sea Race winning skipper in 2021 and tactician on Leopard 3, the event is without equal: “Coming together in such an iconic place, it is a real season highlight and a clash of the titans, the best against the best in perfect sailing.”

Accolades went to the six class winners who showed great consistency and expertise in dealing both with the vagaries of the conditions but equally the formidable nature of the opposition. Proving triumphant were: Galateia (Maxi Class A), Bella Mente (Class B), Spirit of Lorina (Class C), Y3K (Supermaxi), Svea (J Class) and Allegra (Maxi multihull).

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Since its foundation, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has been the showcase for the evolution in maxi yacht design and technology. The 48-strong fleet at this year’s 33rd edition was one of the most eclectic to date. From the largest entrant, Svea (43.6m/143ft), through to the smallest, Blue Oyster (18.3m/60ft), an eye-catching range of yachts were on display.

Innovations for the 2023 edition included the first ever appearance of the maxi multihulls. As YCCS Commodore Michael Illbruck explains, this aligns with the event’s perennial commitment to be at the forefront of developments.

“Change is a constant in the world of yachting, and continuous evolution has been the key to the success of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, right from the first edition in 1980 up to the present day,” Illbruck said.

“The inclusion of multihulls fits perfectly with this perspective, a natural development of an event that has always been characterized by cutting-edge technology. Opening up to other categories allows owners to continue to pursue their passion and may inspire others to do so.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

The oldest competing yachts included the J Class Velsheda and the recently restored Baruna, both dating back to the 1930s. Thomas Bscher’s Baltic 68 Open Season proved a highlight among the newer launches and one which symbolises a movement within sailing design to consider even more closely the environmental impact across all aspects of boat building and performance.

Creating fair and exciting competition across such a diverse fleet requires significant race management organization, one the event has long been renowned for. The rating system and division of classes is constructed with this in mind and to provide owners and sailors with the platform to pursue their passion for the sport.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

On the water, one of the closest divisions was the eight strong Maxi B group where American yachts Bella Mente and Proteus broke away to contest the title.

Going into what proved to be the regatta’s final race, they were tied on points. Bella Mente finished first to cap an impressive week on the water which saw the stellar crew, predominantly together for the past decade, claim two bullets and three second places.

Delight for owner Hap Fauth: “We come every year and it is the pinnacle of our season. This is our fourth victory in 11 years and the hardest fought.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

Even closer was the Supermaxi competition. Only three points separated the top three yachts – Moat, Inoui and eventual winner Y3K, the recently launched Wally 101.

It marked a return to Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup success for owner Claus-Peter Offen: “I have been racing here for 25 years. For us it is the highlight of the regatta season. This is where we want to be thanks to the beauty of the area and of the yacht club.”

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

For the class winners, crowned at the final prizegiving, victory at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is reward for overcoming world-class competition, an intense and challenging racing programme and having prepared in peak form for the pinnacle event in the maxi yacht calendar. The overriding sentiment was an appreciation for an event which always delivers on excellence.

With Europe’s autumn boat show season and Fort Lauderdale in late October marking the prime period for world premieres, Yacht Style highlights many of the year’s most exciting new models by the world’s leading luxury yacht builders.

The following article is the first chapter of New Models 2023 from Issue 73 (click to read/download)

MOTOR YACHTS: ITALY

It’s another exciting year for Ferretti Group, which is hosting two of the most exciting world premieres at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 12-17): Pershing’s series-opening GTX116, also set to display at the Monaco Yacht Show (September 27-30), and Riva’s 82’ Diva, which goes on to exhibit at the Genoa International Boat Show (September 21-26).

Pershing produces the GTX116 at its Mondolfo facility on Italy’s east coast then trucks the yachts 30km up the coast to Fano for launching. Hull one, Caffeine, splashed in February before attending the Monaco Grand Prix in May, while hull two was launched in July, showing off a similar grey hull and blue deckhouse.

Pershing GTX116

Designed with the Fulvio De Simoni studio, the GTX116 is arguably the builder’s most exciting new model since the Pershing 140 and takes the brand into the ‘sport utility yacht’ sector. The 35m motor yacht has a 7.7m beam and a triple waterjet system with the option of three 1,800hp or 2,000hp MAN V12s, the latter providing a top speed of 35.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29.5 knots.

Outdoor areas include a multi-level beach club with an electrohydraulic taffrail, a 40sqm flybridge and a foredeck with the option of a six-person jacuzzi. The main deck features outdoor and indoor dining areas separated by a roomy saloon, while the lower deck offers a full-beam master suite and four guest cabins.

Riva 82’ Diva

The new 82’ Diva is produced at Riva’s La Spezia facility on Italy’s west coast, which builds the brand’s 76-130ft models including its fellow Flybridge models: 90’ Argo, 102’ Corsaro Super, 110’ Dolcevita and 130’ Bellissima, all by Officina Italiana Design.

The 82’ Diva is the first Riva to feature drop-down bulwarks either side of the swim platform and they expand the yacht’s beam from 20ft to 30ft. Other highlights for the Flybridge range’s new entry model include a garage for a 3.45m jet tender and a 40sqm flybridge, which Riva has described as one of the largest for this size of yacht and is about the same size as the fly on the Pershing GTX116.

Diva owners can choose twin 1,800hp MAN V12s or upgrade to 1,900hp versions, which produce a top speed of 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots.

Wally wallwhy150

Wally’s new wallywhy150 debuted at this year’s Venice Boat Show and is scheduled to exhibit at both Cannes and Monaco. Following the concept of the 89ft, 200GT wallywhy200, which debuted at Cannes in 2021, the wallywhy150 offers 150GT of interior volume on a 79ft yacht and can reach 23 knots with three IPS1350 engines.

Wally’s other premiere this year was the wallypower58x, with the outboard version of the wallypower58 debuting at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in Florida and topping 50 knots with four 600hp Mercury Verado V12 outboard engines.

Ferretti Yachts 580

Ferretti Yachts started the year by debuting its 580 at the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show, as the builder continues refreshing its Flybridge series with exterior designs by Filippo Salvetti and interiors by IdeaeItalia, offering Classic or Contemporary decors.

The model features an aft galley and a raised saloon with sofas on both sides, three double guest cabins below, and twin 900mhp or 1,000mhp Volvo Penta engines.

Azimut Magellano 60

Azimut’s new models include the Magellano 60, a world premiere at Cannes and set to show at Genoa. It’s notable for being the brand’s first model to be fuelled by HVOlution – a brand of hydrogenated vegetable oil by Eni Sustainable Mobility – as it cruised from Savona to Taormina for the brand’s annual Yachting Gala event for owners this summer.

The Magellano 60 is the new entry model for a range that includes the upgraded Magellano 66, Magellano 25M and flagship Magellano 30M, with the new 66 and 30M launched last year. Magellano 60 features include an infinity cockpit, aft galley and a forward saloon with a starboard dining area offering spectacular views through full-height windows.

Azimut Verve 48

Azimut is also debuting the Verve 48 at Cannes. An upgrade of the Verve 47, the Verve 48 reveals new developments by Azimut and Francesco Struglia, who designed the interiors and exteriors. The stern area is completely new, larger and integrated with two ladders to easily get into the water, while the yacht features a drop-down bulwark on the port side.

The Verve 48 also reveals a new hard top that’s available with an opening tempered glass insert, which reduces weight and lets in light and air, even at anchor. Powered by three 600hp Mercury V12s, the Verve 48 can reach up to 50 knots, while fuel consumption during cruising speeds has been reduced by 15 per cent and noise has been reduced by up to 10 decibels compared to the Verve 47.

Azimut S7

Azimut’s first premiere of the year was the S7, which was unveiled at Boot and has its in-water premiere at Cannes. Complementing the S6, S8 and S10 in the sportbridge range, the 71-footer can reach 35 knots with three 800hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1050 engines.

Featuring exterior design by regular Azimut collaborator Alberto Mancini, the S7 features an extended sport fly with dining and lounging areas and a wet bar, while the garage can house a custom version of the Pirelli J33 tender and a jet-ski.

However, the S7 is arguably more notable for being the brand’s first model to feature interior design by Yachtique, which focused on colour shades ranging from cream to almond to dark brown. The main wood is pale Dove grey, while flamed Canaletto walnut is used to finish the furnishings.

CGI of Sanlorenzo SX100

Sanlorenzo has filled out its iconic SX ‘crossover’ series with the SX100, which is a world premiere at Cannes and joins the SX76, SX88 and SX112. A new hull is expected to be delivered to Southeast Asia in April 2024, having been sold shortly after the model’s announcement at last year’s Cannes show.

Sanlorenzo’s premieres also include the 57Steel, scheduled to debut at Monaco and notable for its vast volume of 1,050GT, more than double that of the 52Steel.

CGI of Bluegame BGM75

Sister brand Bluegame is staging the premiere of its much-anticipated BGM75 multihull motor yacht at Cannes, which combines naval architecture by Philippe Briand, exterior design by Bernardo Zuccon and an interior by Sanlorenzo Art Director Piero Lissoni. The yacht will show at Genoa and Monaco later in the month.

Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute’s new model for 2023 is the 52 Fly, which premiered at this year’s Miami International Boat Show and is among the builder’s strong line-up at Cannes.

In line with Absolute’s new generation of flybridge yachts led by the 60 Fly and the 56 Fly, the 52 Fly also has infinity aft decks and modular furniture in both the cockpit and flybridge, as well as opening saloon windows, while the lower deck includes a full-beam master cabin in the bow, two doubles midships, and a versatile crew cabin. It also offers the option of solar panels on the hard top.

Invictus TT420

Meanwhile, Invictus is showing the TT420 at Cannes following the model’s unveiling at Boot. The model helps fill out a Christian Grande-designed series that includes the TT280, TT280S and T460, and offers many of the flagship’s best features in a 12.3m model.

Asia Yachting Group, a leading regional dealer founded and led by Olivier Besson, is partnering with BlackOrange, a boutique superyacht brokerage firm headed by Greg Gheraia. Asia Yachting’s new yacht portfolio includes Prestige, Fountaine Pajot and Nautique, while BlackOrange focuses on 30m-plus superyachts and remains a standalone brand within Asia Yachting Group.

Besson, Asia Yachting’s CEO, said: “BlackOrange is a dynamic independent company with a superyacht sales and charter business that, when partnering with Asia Yachting, will allow us to accelerate our strategic growth plans.”

The acquisition supplements Asia Yachting’s specialisation in luxury yacht dealership, brokerage, management and after-sales service in Asia with BlackOrange’s positioning as a renowned global boutique superyacht brokerage firm.

Both Asia Yachting and BlackOrange have had strong years to date. Asia Yachting has nearly 150 active listings in the luxury yacht sector and has brokered over 15 pre-owned yachts so far this year including 888, a 38m Azimut Grande Trideck delivered in early 2023.

Over the last 10 months, BlackOrange has achieved 10 superyacht sales including the 56m Benetti Lady Candy. It has also brokered other sales and been appointed to market megayachts such as a 155m Lürssen and a 90m Lürssen.

Gheraia, Director of BlackOrange, said: “This partnership will make us even stronger and more effective in ensuring our clients’ best interests. Join us at the upcoming yacht shows in Cannes and Monaco to witness the first wave of our exciting new developments.”

The Italian Marine Industry Association (Confindustria Nautica) has announced that the 63rd Genoa International Boat Show from September 21-26 will offer 143 additional berths compared to last year due to the opening of new canals in the Waterfront di Levante redevelopment, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.

Marco Bucci, Mayor of Genoa, said: “For 63 years, the Genoa International Boat Show has stood by our city, helping it to become one of the true international yachting capitals. We’re building the future together, thanks to a great deal of synergy that exists between the public and private sectors that generates valuable results for the territory.

“This year, it will be held at the heart of the new Waterfront di Levante redevelopment project, the ambitious and imposing operation that will give back to all the citizens of Genoa the stunning sea view they deserve. A unique stage to welcome the very best of the yachting industry from all over the world, with a significant return of tourism for the city as well.”

“With the completion of the Waterfront redevelopment plan, of which we can already see the first important results this year, the boat show will become a truly global platform for business development across the sector and everything that revolves around it, a unique location in the world.”

Sunreef Yachts, which recently started building the 80 Eco Hydrogen, has revealed new images of its Zero Cat sailing catamaran. Measuring over 90ft, the Zero Cat superyacht concept is being developed by the shipyard’s R&D department and includes a reformer to transform methanol into clean hydrogen.

“The Zero Cat will generate net zero emissions, no nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides,” Sunreef stated. “Other advantages include low noise and vibration levels, as well as low maintenance. The system will also guarantee the highest level of safety, as no high-pressure hydrogen storage will be needed on board.”

The Zero Cat’s hydrogen production system will be supplemented by hydro generators and solar cells integrated in the yacht’s bodywork, which will generate clean energy with zero emissions to be used for both the electric propulsion and hotel load. Sunreef’s dealers in Asia include Hong Seh Marine in Singapore and Lee Marine in Thailand.

CRN is working on M/Y 145, a 70m fully custom, steel and aluminium superyacht called Project Thunderball. Dutch studio Vripack developed the external lines and the naval architecture, while Italy’s Nauta Design handled the interior design and outdoor furniture.

Marnix J. Hoekstra, Vripack’s Co-Creative Director, said: “Equally cutting-edge naval architecture supports the outside aesthetic, and places this design atop our sizable portfolio of world-travelling ships, which have sailed the ocean since 1961. At every design meeting, our comprehensive approach gave the owner insight into the layouts, functions and performances, enabling quick, thoughtful and deliberate decision-making.”

The superyacht will cruise in the Mediterranean and between Florida and the Bahamas, and be used as a base for diving, sailing and underwater fishing. The owner is a passionate sailor, so a smaller sailing boat will also be delivered to accompany the mother yacht.

Project Thunderball features a traditional elongated bow, a low profile and svelte lines, with curved bilges and a smooth surface. The five-deck yacht has a beam of 11m, a volume of 1,100GT and accommodation for up to 12 guests and 15 crew.

CRN M/Y 145 continues the shipyard’s commitment to by implementing a peak shaving system to increase energy efficiency and slash fuel consumption.

Y.Co completed the sale of Project Thunderball in August 2022 and is acting as the owner’s representative and project management team, supporting the owner through the construction stage to the technical checks, inspection and acceptance as well as with the project management, the on-site supervision and coordinating the external contractors.

CRN’s current projects also include the 72m CRN M/Y 139, the 67m CRN M/Y 143 and the 85m CRN M/Y 144. Ferretti Group’s almost 80,000-sqm Superyacht Yard in Ancona is also building the first all-aluminium Custom Line Navetta 50, hull four of the all-aluminium Pershing 140 and the first all-aluminium Riva 54Metri.

The west side of the yard is dedicated to the production of Custom Line fibreglass range, with 27 yachts now under construction in the sheds and at the quays for finishing, testing and delivery to their owners and project teams.

The Italian superyacht builder has created the Class 44M, designed inside and out by Giorgio Maria Cassetta

Benetti has begun building the Class 44M, which succeeds the Diamond 44M and is based on the same hull. Like the Diamond 44M, whose first hull launched in 2020, the four-deck Class 44M features exterior styling by Giorgio Maria Cassetta, who also designed the interior of the new fibreglass model.

“We worked on an infinite number of details and, as a result, this boat’s interiors are new compared to what we’re used to seeing on a yacht this size,” Cassetta said. “All these details convey an appealing sense of elegance but also reveal the wonder of human skill and craftsmanship: Benetti Class 44M is an incredibly complex, sophisticated place, but one that has a truly amazing ability to welcome people.”

Designed for long, safe cruises around the world, lasting weeks or months, the Class 44M features generous stowage capacity and extensive use of sustainable materials such as FSC-certified wood, while a focus on ‘transparency’ is achieved by glazed surfaces that let light flood into all the decks.

The beach club is a versatile space, while the generously sized garage is located on the port side. On the main deck, the spacious lounge offers direct views of the water due to low-profile bulwarks. The galley and day head are midships, while forward is the full-beam master cabin, which includes an office space, generous wardrobe and full-beam bathroom.

The upper deck includes a large interior living space that extends outdoors towards the stern and can accommodate a dining table for 10, while there’s also the helm station and captain’s cabin forward. The sun deck provides over 102sqm of space for dining, sunbathing or socialising at the bar, or can be configured according to the owner’s preferences.

The lower deck has four double guest cabins and the crew quarters. Specially studied crew flow paths run the entire length of all four decks.

To reduce vibrations and improve soundproofing, floating floors and bulkheads are used throughout, along with flexible transmission couplings. The air-conditioning and purification system ensures high-efficiency air circulation with six changes per hour. Two 1,400hp MAN engines deliver a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,100nm at 11 knots.

Sebastiano Fanizza, CCO of Benetti, said: “We welcome a new yacht into the Class family. This model increases the choice we offer our owners, who expect elegant and innovative new yachts from Benetti. The new Benetti Class 44M flagship is a gem of a yacht from every perspective, vaunting a spacious layout and satisfying every owner’s desire for absolute comfort and wellbeing, which are increasingly at the core of every new yacht project.”

Sunseeker International will display its 100 Yacht at the 54th Southampton International Boat Show (September 15-24), where the superyacht will be the largest boat on display in Europe’s largest, purpose-built temporary marina.

Traditionally one of the biggest exhibitors at Mayflower Park, the Poole shipyard now expects to have 10 yachts at the UK’s biggest boat show. The 100 Yacht joins a provisional line-up announced in late July, while the Predator 75 has replaced the 75 Sport Yacht.

As well as the new flagships of the Yacht and Predator lines, Sunseeker’s line-up at the E060 stand includes the Southampton premiere of the Superhawk 55, which premiered at Boot Dusseldorf in January. The other seven yachts comprise the Manhattan 55, Predator 65, 65 Sport Yacht, Manhattan 68, 76 Yacht, 88 Yacht and 90 Ocean.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO of Sunseeker International, said the 100 Yacht (click for Review) will be the largest vessel Sunseeker has exhibited at the Southampton show for over two decades. “We’re thrilled to share the revolutionary 100 Yacht with visitors to the Southampton International Boat Show and to give them a taste of the true luxury that Sunseeker continues to provide,” Frabetti said.

“As a proud British boat builder, we couldn’t imagine a better place to exhibit the 100 Yacht. It’s an honour to be exhibiting the largest yacht at the show and we’re excited to showcase our continued commitment to an uncompromising approach to design and engineering excellence.

The world premiere of the 100 Yacht was held at last year’s edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, which this year will host a dark Midnight Grey version of the model. Powered by twin MTU 12V 2000 M96X or MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, the 100 Yacht reaches up to 30 knots and accommodates up to 12 guests and five crew.
