Sébastien Marc, aka Colorz
French artist Sébastien Marc (AKA Colorz) will be holding an exhibition in Singapore at Cyril Kongo’s studio located at The Mill 03-03 this Saturday, 13 May 2023. The eclectic urban artist has over 25 years of experience and his works are found across the major cities like Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
“Le Purple” 2023
The exhibition, “Urban Domain” showcases Colorz’s unique artistic style that is known to be expressive yet controlled. Just like his longtime friend and fellow street artist Cyril Kongo, Colorz takes inspiration from the city’s streets. For Colorz, the streets of New York, Paris and many more are where sub-cultures are born and its rich social mores are encapsulated in his artworks. Acquainted with a host of mediums like canvas, aluminium and Plexiglass, the artist’s own brand of abstraction calls to mind great artists like Jackson Pollock and Gerhard Richter.
“Mon Amour” 2023

“Jam Session” 2023

Looking at his body of work, it is clear that the canvases are heavily textured in the sense that it is a combination of different elements taken from his personal experiences. The colours, layers and strokes are like a kaleidoscope — seemingly distinct yet harmoniously compatible.

“Mon Bonbon” 2023

“Urban Domain” is organised by Canvas & Cloth and enquires can be directed to Karen Rubenstein Lorato: karen@canvasandcloth.sg; Instagram @canvasandcloth.sg.

Maritimo will stage the world premiere of its flagship S75 at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (May 25-28). The S75 will be on display alongside the S55 – also from the S-Series of sedan motor yachts – the M60 and M55 flybridge motor yachts, as well as the M600 and S600 from the offshore series.

The Gold Coast event is an opportunity for The Yacht Sales Co’s Southeast Asia clients to personally inspect the S75, the Australian builder’s latest long-range, luxury motor yacht model. The vision of Bill Barry-Cotter AM, the new S75 and upcoming M75 are the largest motor yachts designed and built by the company to date.

Tom Barry-Cotter, Maritimo’s Managing Director, said the new models are the result of the most in-depth design and development process ever undertaken by Maritimo.

“State-of-the-art facilities were purposely designed to give Maritimo the capability of manufacturing larger vessels,” he said. “A new and dedicated production line was established for the M75 and S75 to focus solely on these stunning flagship models.”

The S75 sets a benchmark in design and construction quality with its hull and deck bonded together, delivering impressive scale, form and strength. Expansive glazing throughout gives a luminous and airy interior with excellent views, while four well-appointed cabins are notable for their volume, with the full-beam master stateroom incorporating a stunning ensuite bathroom.

The S75 is powered by twin 1,150mhp Scania V8 diesels as standard, while the generous utility deck offers outstanding storage space.

Meanwhile, tours of the upcoming M75 are being conducted at the Maritimo factory on the Gold Coast, with an official launch planned to coincide with the shipyard’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.

The Yacht Sales Co is the exclusive Southeast Asia dealer for Maritimo (click for article) and can assist with all regional queries across the range.

The Polish luxury catamaran builder has launched its second 80 Eco, which features the builder’s ‘solar skin’ on the hull sides, superstructure and hard top.

Sunreef Yachts has launched the second all-electric Sunreef 80 Eco sailing catamaran, following the launch of Marie-Joseph early last year and the model’s world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September.

In contrast to the dark blue hull on Marie-Joseph, the second unit has a light green hull dominated by Sunreef’s dark ‘solar skin’ and hull windows, while its white superstructure features the ultralight composite-integrated solar panels on the sides and flybridge hard top. Unlike Marie-Joseph, the latest launch doesn’t have solar panels around the mast.

While under sail, the Sunreef 80 Eco recovers energy from the passive motion of the two propellers through an advanced hydrogeneration system. As with the solar panels, the energy obtained is used to power both the hotel appliances and electric propulsion for silent, fuel-free cruising.

Below the main deck, the battery bank consists of custom-engineered batteries combining light weight with outstanding efficiency, while Sunreef describes the 80 Eco’s air-conditioning as the lightest and most efficient in the marine industry.

The aft cockpit offers a full-beam relaxation space with a large daybed, dining table and swim platform, while the flybridge boasts large lounging areas, a jacuzzi, big sunpads and a wet bar.

On the main deck, the saloon offers lots of lounging and dining space with two oversized settees and a table midships, as well as a bar with piano and pop-up TV. Forward is a fully-equipped galley with plenty of storage options and restaurant-quality amenities.

The yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests. The starboard hull houses an opulent, light-filled master suite with double bed, pop-up TV, sofa and vanity desk. The generous en-suite bathroom follows the contemporary style of the master stateroom.

The custom layout also includes a large midships cabin in the middle of the port hull, as well as mirror guest cabins in the forward and aft end of each hull.

Sunreef’s dealers in Asia include Hong Seh Marine in Singapore (click for article) and Lee Marine in Thailand (click for article).

Custom Line has launched the 120’ planing yacht, Someday, at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona. Built for an owner from the EMEA region, Someday is the ninth unit of the 38.36m flybridge motor yacht with a 7.65m beam, which was created by the Ferretti Group Engineering Department in collaboration with Francesco Paszkowski Design for the exterior styling and interior design.

On Someday, the Custom Line Atelier worked closely on the interior design with the owner to understand and interpret the style desired. The highly personalised interior includes a master bathroom with a side shower and a unique washbasin unit complemented by a large central mirror.

“Minimalism and refinement characterise the design of interiors”, Custom Line stated. “The pairing of light and dark colours, in hues ranging from elegant greys to warm shades of beige, bronze and brown, enhances the sensation of light and amplifies the liveability of the spaces.”

The furnishings and decor are designed according to the owner’s style and taste, in collaboration with renowned design brands, and feature sophisticated materials such as Arabescato Carrara marble, leather and matt-effect lacquered wood. Notable exterior features include a hydromassage tub and sun loungers incorporated in the same structure on the flybridge.

Rolex Fastnet Race attracts strong IMOCA line-up

Rolex Fastnet Race attracts strong IMOCA line-up

Starting in Cowes on July 22, this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race looks set to feature over half of the entrants for next year’s Vendee Globe.

Many of the IMOCA 60s due to compete in the next Vendée Globe starting in November 2024 will compete in this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race, now part of the IMOCA calendar and counting as qualifying miles for next year’s singlehanded non-stop round-the-world race.

In the 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, the IMOCAs will race doublehanded (with an extra media crewman). The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s flagship event starts in Cowes on July 22, with competitors sailing around the Fastnet Rock before finishing in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in the north of France.

The IMOCA line-up includes at least eight brand-new boats, some of which will be racing for the first time, while a dozen of the 33 competitors from the last Vendée Globe – including all the podium finishers – have signed up. Organisers believe that the level of competition in the IMOCA class is so high that arguably half of the fleet could win the division.

Following a start-line collision that put him out of the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race, Vendée Globe winner Yannick Bestaven returns with his new Maître CoQ V, a Verdier design built from 11th Hour Racing’s moulds.

Since finishing third in the last Vendée Globe, Louis Burton has acquired the Manuard-designed former L’Occitane en Provence, the most scow-bowed of the last-generation IMOCAs. This he has rechristened Bureau Vallée, as all his boats have been since he was youngest skipper in the 2012-13 Vendée Globe.

Charlie Dalin returns to the Rolex Fastnet Race, having been first home in the last Vendée Globe, but relegated to second place after Bestaven received time compensation. In 2021, he demolished the IMOCA competition – his Apivia finished six hours ahead in this evenly matched class – and his 60-footer was even close to the ClubSwan 125 Skorpios at the Scilly Isles.

“After that the wind dropped and went right a bit, so we couldn’t foil any more,” Dalin recalled. “It was a regret, because if it hadn’t, I think we would have been able to pass them. In foiling mode, we were faster.”

This time Dalin is back with a new IMOCA, the Verdier-design MACIF, due to launch in June. “We’ve identified a few points of sail we wanted to improve, like downwind sailing in moderate-heavy seas and also to optimise the ergonomics of the boat using our experience of the last four years.”

The Rolex Fastnet Race will be the first race for the new MACIF. Dalin is a big fan of the event in which he holds an impressive track record. Aside from his 2021 victory, he won the Figaro doublehanded class in 2013 and came third in the IMOCA class in 2015.

“It will be exciting to start with the Fastnet. I am looking forward to exiting the Solent on the new boat with hundreds of other boats around.”

Rolex Fastnet Race, IMOCA, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Cowes, Yannick Bestaven, Charlie Dalin, Sam Davies, Sam Goodchild, Pip Hare, Kojiro Shiraishi, Justine MettrauxSam Davies returns on the new Initiatives Coeur; Photo: Paul Wyeth

Britain has some strong IMOCA entries. All eyes will be on class veteran Sam Davies and her new Initiatives Coeur. Launched last year, Davies’ first new-build IMOCA is a Sam Manuard design, constructed from the moulds of L’Occitane en Provence. As ever, her campaign will use social media to raise funds for Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, a charity which undertakes heart operations for third-world children.

Britain’s Sam Goodchild and Thomas Ruyant recently launched the IMOCA class’s first two-boat campaign, a winning approach previously used in the America’s Cup and Whitbread Round the World Race. Their joint ‘For People and Planet’ campaign is backed by their respective sponsors Leyton and Advens, and both sailors will be on the start line in July.

Ruyant will skipper For People, a brand-new IMOCA designed by Finot-Conq and Antoine Koch, while Goodchild has inherited Ruyant’s former LinkedOut, a 2019 Persico-built Verdier design, now called For The Planet. LinkedOut won both the last Transat Jacques Vabre and last year’s Route du Rhum, and was sixth in the last Vendée Globe.

The Rolex Fastnet Race will be Goodchild’s first official IMOCA event in his new boat. For Goodchild, who comes from the Ocean Fifty class and most recently has been crewing on the Ocean Race leader Holcim – PRB, his IMOCA campaign has been a long time in the making since 2011 when he was the first Artemis Offshore Academy graduate to receive backing for a Figaro campaign.

Sam Goodchild will race on For The Planet; Photo: Pierre Bouras

“We took our time! I always wanted to do it well. I am happy to do it later and better,” said Goodchild, who has since competed in most major offshore events and won the Pro Sailing Tour with Leyton in his first season as skipper in 2021.

Goodchild has competed in the Rolex Fastnet Race many times, first on the Artemis IMOCA 60 in 2009 and subsequently in the Class40, then on the MOD70 Phaedo and the Ultime Sodebo, although he has yet to win it.

“It is a great race, a great course. Going back to the Solent is always fun, as I spend a lot of time in France. We go further down the Channel coming back now, so we get more for our money this time. I always like the big races which mix pros and amateurs, with everyone on the same race course. It’s good fun.”

Goodchild is also looking forward to finishing in Cherbourg. “It is a great port with a lot of space and a lot of current, which you need to be careful with.”

Rolex Fastnet Race, IMOCA, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Cowes, Yannick Bestaven, Charlie Dalin, Sam Davies, Sam Goodchild, Pip Hare, Kojiro Shiraishi, Justine MettrauxPip Hare will compete on Medallia

Meanwhile, Pip Hare is upping the ante with her new-to-her IMOCA Medallia, formerly Armel le Cléac’h’s 2016-17 Vendée Globe winner (raced to third place by Louis Burton in the last edition).

Since finishing 12th in last year’s Route du Rhum, Medallia has been undergoing major surgery at Jason Carrington’s yard in Hythe, including a bow modification to raise the stem, but most significantly fitting new Verdier foils double the size of her old ones, so requiring major structural modifications. They have good pedigree, being identical to those currently winning The Ocean Race on Holcim-PRB.

“It has been really nice to watch everyone go through the Southern Ocean and hear how they got on with the big foils,” Hare said. “It has reassured me we’re making the right decision and keeping the boat relevant. With the new foils, we will take off earlier, in less wind, and should be flying much higher as well.”

While this will only be Hare’s third Rolex Fastnet Race, her last in 2019 was memorable when the ancient IMOCA she was skippering found itself leading the entire monohull fleet on the first night. This time on a competitive boat, it will be a different experience, a much-needed opportunity to gauge performance against the opposition.

“It’s a hard race,” Hare said. “The course is short and geographically constrained, so everyone will constantly be up against everyone else. A race that takes in a classic start out of the Solent, all the tidal gates, the Celtic Sea and so on, is likely to serve you up anything at all. It’s as serious as races get – an interesting length and really technical.”

Another to watch is James Harayda on Gentoo, the 2007 vintage former Hugo Boss. At 25, Harayda will be the youngest skipper in the IMOCA class, but has already shown his potential coming 14th out of 34 finishers in last year’s Route du Rhum.

Other French ultra-heavyweight contestants include Jérémie Beyou with his new latest-generation Manuard design Charal. Beyou won the race’s IMOCA class in 2019 and was second home in 2021 and aboard his new boat was third in last year’s Route du Rhum.

Newly launched in February was the latest Paprec Arkéa for Yoann Richomme. Like Ruyant’s For People, this is a new design by Finot-Conq and Antoine Koch. Between them, Richomme and Beyou have five Solitaire du Figaro wins – Beyou in 2005, 2011 and 2014, Richomme in 2016 and 2019.

Maxime Sorel finished the last Vendée Globe in 10th place, but launched his latest boat last year. His new V and B – Monbana – Mayenne is a Verdier design, built from Apivia’s moulds but with a new bow design and latest-generation foils. Sorel came fifth aboard her in last year’s Route du Rhum.

Also fielding a 2022 boat is Eric Bellion, first rookie in the 2016 Vendée Globe, who’s new Persico-built Commeunseulhomme powered by Altavia is from successful Mini designer David Raison.

Rolex Fastnet Race, IMOCA, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Cowes, Yannick Bestaven, Charlie Dalin, Sam Davies, Sam Goodchild, Pip Hare, Kojiro Shiraishi, Justine MettrauxJapan’s Kojiro Shiraishi will compete on DMG Mori Global One

While French teams again make up the majority of the IMOCA class, international representation remains strong. Aside from the British competitors, Kojiro Shiraishi from Japan returns with DMG Mori Global One, a 2019 VPLP design aboard which he was 16th in the last Vendée Globe.

Also on the start line will be Canadian Scott Shawyer aboard Canada Ocean Racing, the 2011 vintage Owen Clarke design (originally Acciona), while Szabolcs Weöres from Hungary is aboard Szabi Racing, originally Dee Caffari’s Aviva.

Belgian Denis van Weynbergh is racing one of the few Hungary-built IMOCAs, originally Nandor Fa’s Spirit of Hungary, now called D’Ieteren Group. Flying the flag for Germany as well as France will be Isabelle Joschke on MACSF, the 2007 vintage VPLP-Verdier that was originally Safran.

There are currently two Rolex Fastnet Race competitors from Switzerland. Alan Roura became the Vendée Globe’s youngest competitor when he finished 12th in the 2016-17 race aged 23. Now on his third attempt, Roura is campaigning a competitive boat in Alex Thomson’s latest Hugo Boss.

Rolex Fastnet Race, IMOCA, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Cowes, Yannick Bestaven, Charlie Dalin, Sam Davies, Sam Goodchild, Pip Hare, Kojiro Shiraishi, Justine MettrauxJustine Mettraux will compete on Teamwork

Meanwhile Justine Mettraux, one of four female skippers, is becoming one of her nation’s most accomplished offshore racers, having finished second in the Mini Transat and competed in three Volvo Ocean Races/Ocean Races, winning with Dongfeng Race Team and currently with 11th Hour Racing. She’s campaigning the 2018 VPLP design Teamwork, formerly Jérémie Beyou’s previous Charal.

Romain Attanasio has a new-to-him Fortinet – Best Western, originally Seb Josse’s Edmond de Rothschild, which, in much modified form, finished fifth in the last Vendée Globe as Boris Herrmann’s Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco.

Benjamin Ferre’s Monnoyeur – Duo For A Job was originally François Gabart’s MACIF, which won the 2012-13 Vendée Globe and 2013 Rolex Fastnet Race before being raced by Clarisse Crémer as Banque Populaire to 12th place and first woman home in the last Vendée Globe.

Meanwhile, three others are racing 2008-09 Vendée Globe vintage boats. Pro sailor Sébastien Marsset on Foussier – Mon Courtier Energie, won the Volvo Ocean Race with Groupama and was 11th in the last Vendée Globe.

Freelance.com is skippered by Guirec Soudée, an adventurer who previously spent five years sailing round the world, was the youngest sailor to traverse the North West Passage and has rowed both west to east and east to west across the Atlantic. Groupe Setin’s Manuel Cousin is an ex-Class40 sailor who upgraded to the IMOCA class in 2017 and finished 23rd in the last Vendée Globe.

Double-handed sailing has come a long way since 20 boats that raced in the class when it was introduced to the Rolex Fastnet Race in 2005. Even excluding this year’s 20-plus IMOCA entries, over a quarter of the record IRC fleet (exceeding 400 entries) will be racing in the IRC Two-Handed class for the Brunskill Trophy, mostly competing in IRC Two or IRC Three.

Mike Horn has set off from the Yacht Club de Monaco headed for Iceland as the explorer embarks on his four-year What’s Left round-the-world expedition on the 32m ice-breaker Pangaea, 15 years after the first four-year Pangaea Expedition started from Monaco.

Horn, born in South Africa and now resident in Switzerland, is a Yacht Club de Monaco member and has been an ambassador for Sunreef Yachts’ Explorer range of power catamarans since last year. Based in Gdansk in northern Poland, Sunreef recently completed a two-year restoration of the 35m Pangaea (click for article).

The luxury catamaran builder’s Eco range is a sponsor of the What’s Left campaign, with the Sunreef Yachts Eco logo displayed on both sides of the hull beside the yacht’s name. Panerai, Hexaom, Cummins, Explora Journeys and Yacht Club de Monaco are also sponsors of the expedition.

Prince Albert II of Monaco, President of Yacht Club de Monaco, was among those to bid farewell to Horn on Pangaea, which now flies the Monaco flag. What’s Left has been described as the “last major project” for Horn, who has completed adventurous expeditions all over the world across the last 30 years.

What’s Left will revisit iconic places that marked his career, as well as locations he has not been to yet. The expedition’s purpose is to take stock of the state of the planet, involve students and young environmentalists, and engage with the public.

With Pangaea as the principal mode of transport, the expedition will include the Arctic, the Amazon jungle, Antarctica, Patagonia, the Australian desert, New Zealand, northern Canada, Alaska and Asia, with Horn and his crew spending up to six months in each destination.

“Thanks to extensive research, we know now we have to make every effort to change the situation,” Horn said. “We know sea temperatures are rising, that we have problems with microplastics, that fires and floods are increasing. Nature is in revolt.”

Horn will engage the new generation during the What’s Left campaign by launching the second edition of Pangaea X, the environmental programme for young people. When in Iceland, the boat will bring on board students from the Bionet team, which won the first Pangaea X programme.

By combining exploration, education and an eco-commitment, Mike hopes to inspire a new generation of stakeholders in the planet.

“The aim is to support them as they develop their projects with the help of experts and coaches,” Horn said. “During the programme, teams will learn about concepts such as Business Model, Design Thinking and Business Plan to help them make their idea achievable. It’s only then that they can come aboard and make their project a reality. We then become a platform for execution.”

This year’s International Multihull Show on the south coast of France attracted 14,000 visitors over five days, with 70 sailing and power catamarans and trimarans on display at La Grande Motte, according to organisers.

“The unlimited enthusiasm that was clearly visible has confirmed the thriving nature of the sector,” stated show organiser M2Organisation, which shared feedback from exhibitors that sales were “still “very satisfactory, but far removed from the record figures from 2022”.

Other feedback included the fact that delivery times have become much more reasonable, after reaching a peak of two or even three years.

“We have to meet the requirements of the demand from clients, which remains strong, while also satisfying their needs in terms of performance, comfort and their awareness of the importance of sailing showing respect for the environment,” stated one exhibitor.

The show displayed the industry’s increasing emphasis on clean, eco-friendly cruising, with a lot of new products for innovative propulsion systems and energy solutions, and bio-sourced materials, while the Exhibitors’ Village featured more equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Leopard, which builds in South Africa, showed all six of its catamarans including the European debut of its 40 Powercat (click for article), following the model’s world premiere at February’s Miami International Boat Show. Leopard also exhibited its 46 and 53 Powercats, and 42, 45 and 50 sailing cats, while charter company Sunsail showed a Sunsail 454, a four-cabin Leopard 45.

Bali had the largest display of sailing catamarans with six models including the world premiere of the entry-level Catsmart (38ft), along with the Catspace (40ft), 4.2, 4.4, 4.6 and flagship 5.4. Dream Yacht Charter displayed a Bali 4.8.

Lagoon showed four sailing catamarans led by its Sixty 5, along with a 42, 46 and the new 51, which had its world premiere at last year’s International Multihull Show. Sister brand Excess showcased its 11 and new 14, which debuted at last September’s Cannes Yachting Festival, while Four Winns, also part of Groupe Beneteau, unveiled its TH36 power catamaran.

Fountaine Pajot displayed its Power 67, its flagship motor yacht, along with its MY4.S sedan cruiser. The La Rochelle builder’s sailing models comprised the Isla 40, Astrea 42 and new Aura 51, which debuted in 2022 and pioneered the brand’s new focus on sustainability and renewable energy.

The first Aura 51 in Korea has been delivered to an owner who switched to a sailing catamaran after owning a sailing monohull and motor boat.

The first Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 in Korea has been delivered to an owner who bought his first sailing catamaran, having owned a 49ft sailing monohull and a 27ft motor boat. The Aura 51 (click for Review) was sold by local dealer HBS Yachts and will primarily be used around Busan and Seoul.

Kevin Corfa, Head of Fountaine Pajot in Asia, said: Fountaine Pajot catamarans are highly desirable and the owner chose the Aura 51 because of its design and performance, as well as the dealer’s expertise and reliability. This stunning catamaran is a leader in its class and can be propelled by an integrated electric system developed in-house.

Corfa also revealed that the owner was determined to buy an Aura 51, even though the yacht’s length over 50ft requires a different cruising permit and more complicated paperwork.

“The owner went the extra mile because he really wanted an Aura 51 and it was a great achievement from our dealer in Korea,” Corfa said. “This one will sail Korean waters and shine the spotlight on catamarans as an alternative for boaters in the area.”

Another design for Fountaine Pajot by Berret-Racoupeau, the Aura 51 debuted last year and spearheaded a new generation of eco-friendly models from the La Rochelle builder, featuring the option of integrated solar panels on the coachroof and flybridge. A Smart Electric version made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Wallypower58 revives iconic line – and heads to Asia

Set to arrive in Singapore this summer, the wallypower58 renews the iconic wallypower range in Wally’s new era within Ferretti Group, offering ultra-clean hull lines, an enormous beach club, covered dining and ‘magic portholes’.

The wallypower58 has an ‘ultra-deep-V’ hull

It’s not often you’ll see a 56ft-plus hull without windows. And Wally is probably the only yacht builder that can get away with it, as shown by its wallypower58, which had its US debut at February’s Miami International Boat Show following its world premiere at last year’s Venice Boat Show. Hong Seh Yachting has since secured the first sale in Asia, with the yacht set to arrive in Singapore by July.

As embodied by the revolutionary wallypower118 launched 20 years ago and series sisters like the 80, 70, 58 (first) and 52, Wally is renowned for its clean, pure hull lines – and the new wallypower58’s double-chined hull is about as pure as you can get.

Wallypower58, wallypower, Wally, Asia, Hong Seh, Yachting, Singapore, summer, July, Luca Bassani, magic porthole

It reaches 38 knots with triple 600hp IPS800 inboard engines

For starters, there’s no wraparound fender as seen on the wallytender48 and wallytender43 (and their ‘X’ outboard versions), Wally’s first motor yacht models since the brand joined Ferretti Group in 2019. And when the optional and removable guard rails aren’t fitted, the hull lines are as clean and sharp as a knife.

Starting from the vertical bow, you need to look closely to notice barely discernible lines framing the pop-out anchor locker. Run your eyes back along the smooth hull and the first vertical lines you’ll see are the air intakes, reminiscent of shark gills. Just aft are the fold-down bulwarks that transform this open sport cruiser to a beach club extraordinaire.

“For those who appreciate essential, simple and pure lines”

As Luca Bassani, founder and Chief Designer of Wally, says: “The wallypower58 is for those who appreciate essential, simple and pure lines, and who understand how they really want to use a yacht.”

Above the hull, the angular dome made of carbon-fibre and glass is a classic Wally superstructure, fronted by a curved, one-piece windscreen and flanked by curved, one-piece side windows. The pillarless windows offer clear views and reduce blind spots, important when you’re running at close to 40 knots, when the yacht still provides a secure, grounded ride due to the ‘ultra-deep-V’ hull.

The slightly tapered, vertical bow contains the pop-out anchor system

Like the wallytender48, the wallypower58 uses Volvo Penta’s IPS system and features a triple configuration to reduce the engine block size and draft, which is 1.7m.

With the standard 550hp D8-IPS700 engines, the yacht has a top speed of 36 knots and a cruising speed of 30, while the 600hp D8-IPS800s add two knots to each category, with both engine options giving a 320nm-plus range at cruising speed. The IPS system features Volvo’s proprietary joystick manoeuvring, dynamic positioning and Assisted Docking software.

SIDES, STEPS & SHADE

At anchor, this is a boat all about aft deck space and waterside living. Wally is proud of its role in pioneering drop-down sides and the wallypower58’s aft bulwarks fold down beside the aft deck to create a three-sided beach club in a similar layout to the two current wallytender models.

Wallypower58, wallypower, Wally, Asia, Hong Seh, Yachting, Singapore, summer, July, Luca Bassani, magic portholeThe drop-down sides create a huge waterside beach club

The optional hydraulic aft platform can be submerged at the touch of a button to deploy or retrieve a tender or jetski up to 3.25m or other water toys, while also providing easy access to the water for guests. In addition, Wally’s customary hydraulic passarelle is included as standard, with this retractable portside stairway able to double as a bathing ladder.

Like the wallytender48, the wallypower58 features an adjustable island sunpad, which can be configured to offer multiple lounging options for up to four adults, while it also incorporates a forward-facing sofa for four people. It doesn’t end there.

The island sunpad includes toy storage and can be covered by a stylish electric awning

Underneath is a large toy storage unit that’s accessed via two gullwing doors, while another exciting feature is a striking electrical awning that swings up out of the deck and over the sunpad like the roof of a soft-top car.

COVERED WONDERLAND

The area forward of the sunpads is covered by the hard top and features two symmetrical, parallelogram-shaped bench sofas, which combine with the sunpad’s forward sofa to offer three-sided socialising for up to a dozen guests.

The hard top covers the dining area

By the starboard sofa is a lengthways table that follows the parallelogram theme and has an anti-sliding surface. It can fold out to become a full dining table, with foldable chairs to port completing the set-up.

Forward, the open, full-beam galley is split across port and starboard sections, and allows the owner to select the configuration of the cabinets and spaces from a long list of options including fridges, icemakers, cooking tops and storage.

A personal favourite on the unit viewed was the cutlery and crockery drawers in the counter beneath the two tall helm seats, which are the same type as used on the 89ft wallywhy200 and face twin Garmin screens.

The facing sofas and foldable table follow a parallelogram theme

The adjustable roof features an electric hatch that can open for increased ventilation and the covered area can even be air-conditioned to offer relief against heat. When cruising in chillier climates, the cockpit can be fully enclosed by isinglass.

However, if the weather’s nice, there’s another outdoor area in the bow. The wide, deep side decks include three long steps up to the foredeck, where integrated sunpads wrap around the deck hatch and skylights above the master cabin. Using the foredeck is only advisable when the boat’s stationary, due to the completely flat surface and low bow rails.

WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

By the helm, forward stairs lead down to an elegant, almost airplane-like interior with a midships zone offered in two configurations. The standard layout features a full-beam, symmetrical ‘double saloon’, where each side has a sofa and stylish, leather-handled overhead lockers. Forward to port is a day head with shower.

Forward view of the full-beam ‘double saloon’ option

The optional layout includes a cabin on the port side. The guest cabin set-up has a double bed aft and direct access to the port bathroom, while the room can also be used as a crew cabin with overhead access via a hatch in the floor of the galley, a suitable option for charter boats and large-yacht chase boats.

In these two-cabin layouts, the saloon contains a single starboard sofa facing a TV screen installed on the port cabin bulkhead. Options for the downstairs area include space for a microwave or fridge. As there are no hull windows, natural light is provided through a long overhead glass panel embedded in the main deck under the windscreen, while the ceiling has strip lights and spotlights.

The lower saloon features a ‘magic porthole’ screen relaying the outside view

And for views? Wally has come up with ‘magic portholes’ on either side of the saloon. These are much larger than the word ‘porthole’ might suggest and offer an interior screen featuring imagery of the exterior as relayed by images from gimbal-stabilised cameras with 4K resolution.

The master cabin is in the bow and features a queen-size bed below a forward mirror and under a deck hatch and two skylights. Both sides of the cabin have the same overhead lockers as seen in the saloon, while there’s a cupboard to port, Samsung TV and starboard bathroom featuring a large, standalone shower room with a wooden bench seat.

Recent Wally deliveries in Asia include units of the wallytender43 to Hong Kong and Singapore, with the latter soon to also welcome the region’s first wallywhy200 (sold by Thailand dealer V Yachts Asia) along with the wallypower58, offering a spectacular cross-section of the brand’s three motor yacht ranges in the Ferretti Group era.

Lürssen has delivered the 90m Norn, which recently left the shipyard and embarked on her maiden voyage. Formerly known as Project 1601 and launched in February (click for article), the 295-footer has a beam of 14.7m (48ft 2in) and was built for a couple that previously owned a 70m Lürssen, which they had for over 20 years.

For the new yacht, the owners “required top-notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for their family,” according to Lürssen. For the exterior, the owners once again worked with Espen Oeino, who created a striking design dominated by flat surfaces, straight lines and angular corners, along with a series of extraordinary features.

Lürssen, Norn, Project 1601, Espen Oeino, Dölker + Voges, Cornelsen & PartnerEspen Oeino designed Norn’s exterior

Lürssen stated that “the crispness of the exterior styling suggests a geometrical precision that permeates every facet of the yacht,” with the interior by Dölker + Voges echoing the same design themes as the exterior. Cornelsen & Partner acted as Project Manager for the owners’ team throughout the construction process.

As with all Lürssen yachts, Norn is equipped with state-of-the art technology and engineering systems including zero-speed stabilisers, an outside cinema, and a liftable pool floor with dance floor illumination. A dynamic positioning system enables electronic anchoring in sensitive and remote areas, protecting the seabed and allowing for safe mooring regardless of water depth.

Showcasing the best of contemporary European cinema, the European Film Festival will be held from May 16-31 at The Projector.

“Cinema has the power to transport us to different worlds and open our minds to various perspectives,” shares Iwona Piórko, European Union Ambassador to Singapore. From 16 to 31 May, the European Union (EU) Delegation to Singapore will bring the best of contemporary European cinema to the heart of Singapore at independent cinema operator The Projector. More than 20 films across the EU and works from local young filmmakers will be showcased at the European Film Festival (EUFF).

While the EU and Singapore are seemingly distinct, the two actually have much in common. As a region comprising 27 member states, the EU is a melting pot of cultures, histories, languages and perspectives. In a similar vein, Singapore is a multicultural society with diverse groups of people from different backgrounds. Using the medium of film, society is not only entertained but is made known of salient issues through the storytelling of these filmmakers.

In our highly globalised world, it is impossible to stay isolated from the world and its ever-changing landscape. So, film festivals such as EUFF are platforms for these exchanges to happen. “[EUFF]’s continued run is a testament to the enduring power of cinema to bring people together and promote cultural exchange, even in the midst of unprecedented challenges,” Piórko adds in a statement. “I hope this year’s festival will continue to inspire and enrich audiences in Singapore and beyond.”

For last year’s edition, the EUFF picked Ukraine as its featured country and a Ukrainian film was chosen for the opening. Choosing Ukraine was a sign of support that the EU is showing for the country currently in conflict and as an organisation “we continue to stay united in our support for Ukraine and its people for as long as it takes.”

Sweden is the featured country this year, and the EUFF will open with the film “Hilma”. This critically acclaimed film explores the themes of love, loss and personal growth. Its protagonist is Hilma af Klint, a revolutionary Swedish artist and feminist pioneer. The film chronicles her journey in the 1900s as a female artist trying to break into a male-dominated field. The multi-layered and nuanced biopic also explores the spiritual beliefs that influenced her art and her body of work.

“We also continue our celebration of youth by championing their ideas,” Piórko shares at EUFF 2023 media conference. “In this context, our collaboration with young Singaporean filmmakers sees the screening of their films alongside the main festival shows. We present student films from three schools: Lasalle College of the Arts Puttnam School of Film and Animation; Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film & Media Studies and Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art, Design and Media.”

Tickets for the EUFF are priced at S$15 on weekdays and weekends and are available for purchase here.
