The 43ft Swan Shadow is the Finnish builder’s first motor yacht

Headquartered in Hong Kong with offices in Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam, Asiamarine has been appointed as the Asia dealer for the Swan Shadow, which was launched last year and is the Finnish builder’s first motor yacht. The first Swan Shadow in Asia is now in Hong Kong and available for viewing through Asiamarine.

Renowned for its sailing yachts, which it has built in Finland since 1967, Swan conceived the Shadow as a chase or shadow boat for Swan owners. However, the 43ft 4in motor yacht has evolved to become a multi-purpose boat that can be configured for other uses such as a fishing boat, day boat and Limo tender.

Swan yachts are renowned for their finish and craftsmanship

Eric Noyel, founder and CEO of Asiamarine, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be associated with Nautor’s Swan and the new Swan Shadow. Owned by Leonardo Ferragamo, Swan is one of the most renowned of all the premier boating brands and known worldwide for performance, quality, elegance and innovative design. Its move into the motor yacht sector is truly a milestone moment, and Asiamarine is proud to be an integral part of this in Asia.”

The Shadow is designed by Jarkko Jämsén and re-expresses much of the DNA of Swan sailing yachts, with more than 2,300 hulls from 36-125ft launched since 1966. Jämsén worked on the design of the ClubSwan 50 sailing yacht in collaboration with in-house Swan designer Juan K, one of the world’s most prominent naval architects.

The Swan Shadow has a stepped hard chine planing hull that comes straight from the drawing board of the racing world, while three outboard engines from 225-350hp are surrounded by an innovative multi-use swim platform that can be lowered into the water or raised up for use as a passarelle.

Beneteau, Lagoon Catamarans and Excess Catamarans worked with their respective dealers in Australia to present 12 models between them at this year’s Sydney International Boat Show, which finished in early August.

Flagstaff Marine represents Beneteau sailing yachts and inboard motor yachts in New South Wales state plus Excess across Australia, Chapman Marine is Beneteau’s outboard motorboat dealer in New South Wales, while The Multihull Group is Lagoon’s representative for Australia.

Beneteau’s 11-strong fleet included the Oceanis 40.1, Oceanis 46.1 and Figaro Beneteau 3 sailing yachts shown by Flagstaff Marine, which also displayed a Gran Turismo 36 inboard motorboat. Chapman Marine showcased Gran Turismo 36, Gran Turismo 32, Flyer 9 Sundeck, Flyer 9 Spacedeck, Flyer 8 Sundeck, Antares 11 Fly and Antares 9 outboard motorboats.

Beneteau owners’ nights were organised by Flagstaff Marine on the first two days of the show before Chapman Marine held one on the evening of the third.

Embracing the digital age, Lagoon and The Multihull Group used a virtual story-telling approach with a fresh Lagoon Discovery Lounge. Decorated with tropical furniture and carpets in ‘Lagoon Blue’, the interactive lounge allowed guests to touch and feel the whole Lagoon range via advanced virtual tours.

Visitors were also encouraged to explore Seanapps, Groupe Beneteau’s in-house boat monitoring solution, and enjoy demonstrations by Raymarine, the navigation system used by Lagoon Catamarans.

Flagstaff Marine staged the Australia debut of the Excess 11, which features twin helm stations and a large open cockpit on deck, while lower-deck highlights include a 2m by 2m bed in the owner’s cabin and bathrooms with separate showers.

“It has been a wonderful experience to be finally back in Sydney for this important boat show after two years of shutdown,” said Hong Kong-based Erwan Her, Beneteau Sales Director, Asia Pacific.

“This enabled us to meet the owners, professionals from the industry, as well as prospects passionate about water sports or boating. The feedback from the market has been very positive over the past years as evidenced by the great sales in all segments, presenting us with a good reason to further strengthen the exposure in Sydney.”

Ferretti Group has announced a €1.2 billion order backlog as part of its H1 2022 consolidated financial results. Its order backlog of €1.218 billion at June 30 was up 49 per cent on a year earlier and 20 per cent on December 31, 2021, while its order intake of €641.9 million during the first six months of this year represented a 30 per cent increase on the same period in 2021 (€493.6 million).

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “The market is at an extraordinary point, although our strong growth owes particularly to our hard work. We are investing in continued innovation and consistently unveil new models.

“Every aspect is painstakingly considered, from design to technology, while continually looking to reduce our environmental footprint. We are confident that we bring the best of Italian boating to the world and achieve tangible results for our shareholders.”

As of June 30, Ferretti Group’s order backlog included €389.0 million of composite yachts, €400.7 million of made-to-measure yachts, €370.5 million of superyachts and €57.8 million for other businesses including Wally and Ferretti Security Division.

The adjusted EBITDA of €69.0 million for the six-month period was a 30.2 per cent increase on H1 2021. Net revenue of €534.9 million in H1 2022 was up 17 per cent on the same period in 2021 and comprised €225.6 million in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region, €171.3 million in the Americas and €38.1 million in Asia-Pacific.

Ferretti Group attributed its strong performance to three main factors: a) commercial: a longer waiting list due to the extensive order book, which means greater pricing power; b) strategic positioning: a stronger presence in the most profitable segments, such as made to measure; and c) industrial: economy of scale in procurement and more efficient absorption of fixed costs.

The Group’s new models in 2022 include CRN’s 62m Rio and 52m Ciao, Custom Line’s flagship 140′, Ferretti Yachts 860 and wallypower58. Ferretti Group includes the Wally, Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Riva, CRN and Custom Line brands, operates six shipyards in Italy and serves customers in more than 70 countries through its direct presence in Europe, the US and Asia working with a network of about 60 third-party dealers.

Fraser CEO Raphael Sauleau has revealed that following a boom across all aspects of the superyacht industry last year, charter demand has risen to record levels in 2022.

“We’re seeing even more enthusiasm for getting out on the water this year, both from existing clients and newcomers,” Sauleau said. “As the data shows, charter bookings have surged across almost every size range, especially in the 50-60m ‘sweet spot’.”

In Fraser’s managed charter fleet, bookings were up by 87% on 2021. Sauleau also said more owners are realising the importance of professional yacht management, with Fraser’s managed fleet increasing by 93% in the last five years to well over 100 yachts.

This year, Fraser’s Charter Brokers have placed 15% more bookings compared to the record-breaking 2021. And in terms of destinations, this year’s top five most in-demand are, at the time of writing, the French Riviera followed by the Amalfi Coast, Croatia, Greece and the Bahamas.

Fraser, CEO, superyacht, Raphael Sauleau, Yacht Style, charter, destination, days, booked, record, 2021, 2022

Meanwhile, both North America and the Caribbean have increased by 100-200% as Americans enjoy the stunning regions in their ‘back yard’ and more discover yachting. And interestingly, clients are spending 86% longer on board than they did pre-Covid.

Fairline is scheduled to launch the Targa 40 in 2023

Fairline has announced that it will launch its new Targa 40 in the summer of 2023, offering a smaller alternative to the current 45 GT and 45 Open. The British builder hopes the Targa 40 will follow the success of the Targa 38, which proved to be one of the brand’s most popular models following its launch in 2006, with more than 300 built over the following decade.

Christian Gott, Fairline’s lead concept designer, said: “The popularity of the Targa 38 cannot be disputed and this brand-new 40 takes everything we loved about the 38 and elevates it.”

The Targa 40 features a bold exterior design, with a modern bluff-bow hull and an open cockpit design with a hardtop and electric canvas sunroof, opening the whole main deck. Echoing the lines and extensive glazing on the Phantom 65 and new Squadron 68, the Targa 40 floods the interior with light and uninterrupted views.

The drop-down bulwark to starboard

Features include a fold-down beach club balcony to starboard, while twin sunbeds with floating backrests convert into sofas for guests to enjoy day or night. The integrated aft garage to port has room for a 2.3m tender with electric outboard.

Social areas include a large C-shaped seating and dining area plus companion seating to port, while a wet bar is nestled behind the two helm seats, where a “beautifully proportioned and ergonomically designed helm console is part of a wider focus on technology at Fairline”.

The latest Garmin touch screen display enhances the customer experience with a simplified and intuitive user interface allowing integrated control of all essential systems. Moving to the foredeck, the expansive sunbeds dominate, and the addition of a forward-facing sofa at the bow enables guests to enjoy the views whilst cruising.

The Fairline Targa 40 will reach up to 36 knots

The lower deck features a master suite in the bow with 1.98m headroom and direct access to the en-suite which features a jack-and-jill door arrangement. The guest cabin midships has twin berths athwartships that can convert to a double, while forward is a galley to port and a C-shaped sofa to starboard.

James Powell, Fairline’s Sales Director, said: “The Targa 40 announcement comes at an exciting time for Fairline and marks a major milestone in our new model development programme. We’re continually improving and adding to our model range, and this new Targa 40 will offer many boaters their first step into our renowned Targa range.”

Owners will have the choice of either twin Volvo Penta D6-340s or D6-380s, which Fairline expects to deliver top end speeds of 32 knots and 36 knots respectively.

The ‘all-season terrace’ on Ferretti Yachts Infynito series

Ferretti Yachts is developing a new Infynito series of yachts, which will range from 70-100ft. The models are designed by the team responsible for Ferretti Yachts’ newest models: Filippo Salvetti for the exteriors and hulls, IdeaeItalia for the interiors, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

Infynito yachts are designed to complement the brand’s existing flybridge series, which range in size from the FY500 to the flagship FY1000 that debuted last year.

Catering to “owners’ new needs”, Infynito models are designed to offer “seamless contact with the surrounding environment, even more sustainable materials and navigation, plus custom detailing”. Design wise, the ‘infinite’ emphasis is on visual continuity between interiors and exteriors, with panoramic views of the horizon.

“With no more limits and boundaries, the view sweeps far and wide and navigation is purer, more personal and more introspective,” Ferretti Yachts stated. “The understated design is clean and balanced, expressing new values that point the way to the more natural and sustainable approach to cruising increasingly embraced by owners.”

A key design feature is the main deck, where the view sweeps from interior to exterior and from bow to stern. The design of this space includes FY’s ground-breaking ‘all-season terrace’, a spacious and atmospheric area that’s hidden from passers-by when the yacht is moored on the quay and functional at sea in all weather conditions.

Infynito also introduces Ferretti Sustainable Enhanced Architecture (FSEA), a package of environmentally-friendly cruising solutions.

FSEA includes a solar roof that generates electric power to charge the onboard batteries, a ‘hotel mode’ powering onboard systems with zero emissions due to a special lithium battery pack, and the choice of greener materials such as ecological paints, sustainable teak, recyclable fabrics and leathers.

Thailand’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Board has approved Port Takola Yacht Marina & Boatyard’s application for a marina expansion up to 300 berths and 15,000sqm of boatyard service area.

The expansion will offer an extra-wide concrete pontoon berth to accommodate yachts from 10m to 45m. A work berth will be available on a north section of the marina harbour. The boatyard will increase its capacity from 9,000sqm to 15,000sqm, its lifting capacity will increase from 38 tonnes to 80 tonnes, while a boatshed will be available for refits of yachts up to 25m.

Matthew na Nagara, General Manager of Port Takola and a former Chairman of the Thai Yachting Business Association, said: “We are excited that our EIA application has been approved. Port Takola has had a modest start, but we are proud of our steady development.

“We have had a great cruising community with several superyachts here, while charter yacht tenancy has also been increasing. This is due to our advantageous location that offers year-round shelter and a convenient access from land and sea.”

Port Takola is a 10-minute drive from Ao Nang and 40 minutes from Krabi International Airport, while Krabi is situated in the Phang Nga Bay archipelago, Thailand’s most famous cruising ground. “The location makes the marina an ideal home port as well as a port of call,” Nagara said.

Port Takola is being developed by Nagara and his father, Surgeon Admiral Suriya (RTN), and is built on a century-old family estate called Isara Estuary, located in the Krabi river mouth. Transforming the former shrimp farm into a full-service marina began in 2010.

Phase one commenced operation in 2018 with 50 wet berths, 50 dry berths, a 38-tonne Roodberg trailer boat lift, fuel dock and café. The marina recently expanded Pier G with 25 more berths, ranging from 15m to 45m. www.porttakola.com

At the faster end, debutant Frank Slootman’s MOD70 Snowflake has been joined by Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi 70, which will mark its fifth appearance.

Among the monohulls, one entry to catch the eye is Maverick, which was campaigned around the 606nm course with great success on two previous occasions by Quentin Stewart, winning class both times and finishing third overall in 2016.

This year, Maverick has been chartered by Michael Firmin, who raced on the DSS foil-equipped flyer at the 2017 Rolex Fastnet and 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart, where she finished third in class. Firmin has not previously competed in the Rolex Middle Sea Race and leapt at the chance to charter Maverick when he learned she was available.

“Despite a longstanding love of the ocean and offshore racing, this will be my first Rolex Middle Sea Race. I have been very lucky to complete all the other major blue water events and I hold this one in high regard. It has long been on the bucket list,” Firmin said.

Maverick is an awesome boat that I have had a long affinity with from the initial concept through to Quentin’s successful campaigning over many seasons. I know her pedigree very well.”

Firmin is joined by Stu Bannatyne, known as ‘King of the Southern Ocean’ and a four-time winner of the Ocean Race, two-time 29er world champion Steve Thomas, David Gilmour and Infiniti founder Gordon Kay.

The 30.5m Leopard 3, a Farr 100, is among the largest entries as it returns after a five-year absence. In contrast to Firmin, Chris Sherlock is no stranger to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, having first competed back in 1997 onboard Mike Slade’s IOR maxi, Longobarda. Sherlock has competed four times since as the skipper of Leopard of London in 2002, and Leopard 3 in 2009, 2010 and 2017.

“The Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the greatest offshore races in the world,” Sherlock said. “First, it’s a circle and that is unusual. It has the most amazing scenery, too. Most importantly, I think it is a fair race. You will get a bit of everything and because it is a circle every boat should get the conditions they perform best in at some point. It’s not just a straight line, so it’s never boring.”

In 2009, Slade and Sherlock brought the 30.5m Leopard 3 to the course and – in winds like 2007 – set a blistering pace, finishing just over 30 minutes outside the-then record time. Returning in 2010, and racing in less-favourable breeze, Leopard 3 was outgunned by Esimit Europa 2 in the battle for line honours. In 2017, Leopard 3 was under charter with Sherlock as skipper and finished second on the water behind Rambler in another ‘slow’ year.

For 2022, Leopard is under new ownership, while the crew includes a lot of Ocean Race experience as well as experience on Leopard, and includes Mitch Booth, Ian Budgen, Jan Dekker, Juanpa Marcos and Will Best as navigator

“We have a new owner who is currently building his familiarity with the boat. He is young, likes to helm and is keen to go offshore. We did the RORC Caribbean 600 as a taster and that went well,” Sherlock said. “The Rolex Middle Sea Race is the next challenge. It is one of my favourite races. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Within the main body of IRC entries, the impressive two-time winning Maltese co-skipper combo, Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, are back hoping for a three-peat, with Satariano’s latest Artie.

Among yachts returning from last year, Frederic Puzin’s Daguet-Corum 3 finished first in IRC Class 2 and third overall, while Artie III was second in IRC Class 3 and seventh overall. Chenapan 4, Gilles Caminade’s Ker 40, finished in the top 20 overall, as did fellow French entry Ludovic Gerard’s Solenn for Pure Ocean (second in the Double-Handed Division).

The eventual fleet count last year was 114. The highest gathering was 130 in 2018, which marked the 50th anniversary of the first Rolex Middle Sea Race in 1968.

Ferretti Group’s participation at the second China International Consumer Products Expo featured the Riva 180th Anniversary VIP Reception, highlighted by the preview of the new Anniversario yacht and scale models of three new superyachts: the wallywhy200, Pershing GTX116 and Riva 50 Metri.

Represented by staff from Ferretti Group and local dealer Speedo Marine, the Group’s first participation at the Expo held the Riva 180th Anniversary VIP Reception cocktail at the public dock of Haikou National Sailing Center where VIPs included Haikou City officials, show organisers and industry partners.

The event included a screening of Riva: The Persuaders!, with David Beckham, Charles Leclerc and Pierfrancesco Favino starring in the action-packed, three-minute film inspired by the classic TV series, The Persuaders!

As the cocktail moved to its climax, the Anniversario – a yacht produced exclusively for Riva’s 180th anniversary – was slowly unveiled on the huge screen. The yacht was launched to pay tribute to Riva Aquarama, its iconic predecessor launched in 1962.

Fabiomassimo Discoli, Sales and Marketing Director of Ferretti Group Asia Pacific, said: “This is a night dedicated to Riva’s 180th anniversary, a time to toast Riva and its Chinese partners. We choose to hold our anniversary at this Expo because Hainan is China’s yacht mecca and the wind vane of China’s yacht culture. The island has been leading the trend of China’s yacht market just like our brand, which lives in a harmonious ecological system surrounded by flowing water, art and aesthetics.

“On this occasion, I would like to thank all our Chinese friends for your constant support for Ferretti Group and Riva, and to launch a new limited edition Riva yacht, Anniversario. In the future, Riva will begin to write a new 180-year chapter in the history of global shipbuilding.”
