British builders are again the dominant exhibitors at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show (September 16-25), with Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline fielding impressive line-ups at Mayflower Park, having all participated at the Cannes Yachting Festival earlier in the month.

Princess’s seven yachts in the water are headlined by the global debut of the F65 and the world premieres of the F55 and F50, all from the F Class series of flybridge yachts. The Plymouth builder’s other models include the V50 Deck (show debut) and V55 sports yachts, S66 sportbridge and the Y72 (show debut) from the larger Y Class flybridge motor yachts. Project 31, the original Princess yacht, is on display by the show entrance.

Princess has seven yachts in the water

Will Green, Executive Director, Sales and Marketing for Princess Yachts, said: “The Southampton International Boat Show has always been extremely important to Princess and marks the start of the new selling season, often setting the direction for the year ahead.

“The new F65 will be a pivotal new boat for Princess, so we’re delighted to be able to launch her at our home show as a major draw for both UK and international customers.”

Sunseeker is showing nine yachts

Sunseeker’s large display features the UK debut of the Predator 65, which had its world premiere in March at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in the US. The nine-yacht line-up also includes Predator 65’s sister model, the 65 Sport Yacht, along with the Manhattan 55 and Manhattan 68. The Poole builder’s largest models on show are a Predator 74, Predator 74 XPS, 76 Yacht, 88 Yacht and 95 Yacht.

Sean Robertson, Sales and Marketing Director at Sunseeker International, said: “We’re showcasing another stellar line-up at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show, with our expert team on hand to offer comprehensive sales advice and support throughout the 10-day show.”

Fairline’s six yachts include its flagship Squadron 65

Fairline is staging the show debut of its newly upgraded flagship Squadron 68, soon after the model’s official world premiere at Cannes. The Squadron 68 includes a subtly revised exterior, new sleek hardtop and new interior design, and the first hull in Asia was delivered over the summer to Pattaya, Thailand, through regional dealer Simpson Marine. The builder’s line-up at the show also includes the F//Line 33, Targa 45 Open and GT models, Targa 50 Open and Squadron 50.

Paul Grys, CEO of Fairline, said: “We’re excited to return to Southampton International Boat Show. The response we’ve had for our latest models has been excellent, and we continue to invest in new products and improve existing lines to ensure excitement grows with what Fairline has to offer.”

Executive Chairman Massimo Perotti reveals the Italian builder’s focus on sustainable technology along with other priorities for the coming years.

Sanlorenzo has revealed its ‘Road to 2030’ vision, which includes a focus on sustainability and fuel efficiency illustrated by ongoing partnerships with Rolls-Royce, Siemens Energy and Volvo Penta.

The builder kicked off its announcement by revealing financial figures that has led to a forecast for the 2022 financial year of revenues between €720-740 million, about a 25 per cent increase compared to 2021. The EBITDA forecast is between €126-130 million, representing an increase of over 30 per cent, while net profit is expected to be €68-70 million, about 35 per cent up on 2021.

However, Executive Chairman Massimo Perotti emphasised that Sanlorenzo’s priorities for the coming decade are headed by sustainability and technology, with a particular focus on the marine use of hydrogen fuel cells.

Last year, Sanlorenzo signed a partnership with Siemens Energy for the integration of fuel cells powered by hydrogen obtained from methanol to generate electricity on board, a technology that will first be seen on 24-80m yachts on a 50Steel superyacht scheduled for delivery in 2024.

This August, Sanlorenzo signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce’s business unit Power Systems with its product and solution brand MTU for the installation of hydrogen propulsion systems obtained from methanol. These solutions will be combined with fuel cells supplied by Siemens Energy and will initially be installed on a prototype Sanlorenzo superyacht, scheduled for delivery in 2026.

Sanlorenzo, Road to 2030, Rolls-Royce, Siemens Energy, Volvo Penta, Bluegame, Massimo Perotti, EBITDA

The use of green methanol, produced with electricity from renewable sources and CO2 captured from the atmosphere, enables the generation of ‘carbon-neutral’ power. The amount of CO2 released into the air in the combustion process is equivalent to the amount removed from the environment to produce methanol.

Meanwhile, Bluegame has been selected by American Magic, challenger in the 2024 America’s Cup, as a partner for the design and construction of the first chase boat with exclusively hydrogen propulsion and use of foils, according to the strict requirements of the event’s protocol.

Bluegame has also reached an agreement with Volvo Penta to install a pilot IPS hybrid propulsion system, which will be combined with hydrogen fuel cells developed from the America’s Cup project. It will be implemented on the BGM65HH (hydrogen-hybrid) model, to be launched in 2025.

Sanlorenzo’s other themes for the Road to 2030 include services and the supply chain. Services includethe Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet, described by the yard as the world’s first mono-brand charter programme”. Other services include training programmes for crew members at the Sanlorenzo Academy, tailor-made leasing and financing, as well as maintenance, restyling and refitting services, all under Sanlorenzo Timeless.

To strengthen the supply chain, Sanlorenzo intends to forge closer partnerships with its suppliers and strategic contractors through initiatives in supporting them, such as the extension of its sustainability path, the sharing of best practices, the possibility of drawing specialised personnel from the Sanlorenzo Academy, and structured financial support.

Bernardo Zuccon designed the BGM75 exterior

Bluegame has revealed details of its BGM75, three years after it announced at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival it would be entering the power catamaran market. Named ‘M’ after its ‘multihull’ platform, the BGM75 is the first model in a new powercat series that complements the BG and BGX monohull motor yacht ranges.

Bluegame, BGM75, power, catamaran, multihull, twin, hull, monohull, Bernardo Zuccon, Sanlorenzo, Piero Lissoni, Philippe Briand, Simpson Marine

The BGM75 has a huge aft platform

The BGM75 has a CE-certified hull length of 20.3m (66ft 6in), an overall length of 22.7 (74ft 4in) and a beam of 8.15m (26ft 7in), yet this 48,000-tonne powercat has a draft of just 1.45m (4ft 7in). Fitted with twin 550hp or 600hp Volvo D8 engines, the CE Category B yacht has an estimated top speed of 21 knots and a cruising speed of 18.

Drop-down sides expand the beach club area

The Ameglia shipyard says the BGM75 is also comparable to a monohull motor yacht due to “the length-to-width ratio, layout, full-beam owner’s cabin, the reduced space required for mooring in the marina, and the cushioned perception of movement at sea”.

The flybridge houses the sole helm station

Bernardo Zuccon, a long-time design collaborator with Sanlorenzo and Bluegame, and Sanlorenzo Art Director Piero Lissoni have designed the exteriors and interiors respectively of a yacht that can accommodate a 3.95m (12ft 9in) tender. The benefits arising from the twin-hull platform include increased stability, large volumes and reduced fuel consumption, a major selling point of the model.

Bluegame, BGM75, power, catamaran, multihull, twin, hull, monohull, Bernardo Zuccon, Sanlorenzo, Piero Lissoni, Philippe Briand, Simpson Marine

Piero Lissoni designed the interiors

Philippe Briand has designed the hull, which combines with the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system to help the BGM75 use 50 per cent less power than monohull vessels of the same volume, according to Bluegame. Other contributing factors to the fuel economy include the use of carbon for the hull and lightweight materials for all non-structural parts and furnishing components.

The full-beam master suite

To illustrate the comparison, Bluegame said the BGM75 fitted with two 600hp Volvo D8 engines would provide savings of €120,000 over 300 hours of use compared to a 90ft monohull displacement vessel of similar volume using twin 1200hp MTU engines. Furthermore, the option of 56 solar panels on the BGM75 deckhouse can supply 5kW of green energy.

The VIP suite has a window-facing bed

Luca Santella, founder of Bluegame and its Head of Product Strategy, said: “We’ve been true to our DNA: great hull design for a safe and comfortable ride, robust construction, well-protected sides, large beach areas open to the sea, generous front lounge areas, connected cockpits, optimised position of the helm station, great visibility, extremely easy manoeuvrability, superior quality, great attention to detail and understated elegance.” Simpson Marine represents both Bluegame and Sanlorenzo in Asia.

The Swan 55 is another German Frers design

Nautor premiered its Swan 55 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, a year after debuting the Swan 58 at the same show and following other models launched in recent years including the Swan 48 (2019), Swan 65 (2019) and Swan 78 (2018).

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

The Swan 55 fits between the 48 and 58

Sparkman & Stephens designed the first Swan 55 (1970), which led to a Swan 57 (1977) and a series of Frers designs, from the Swan 53 to the Swan 56 (1997), Swan 53 (2005) and now the new Swan 55, which has a 54ft 6in hull, an overall length of 58ft 2in and a beam of 16ft 5in.

The fold-out swim platform

This latest iteration of the Swan 55 represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of tools available today to study the behaviour of the canoe body in all sailing conditions,” Frers said.

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

Two ‘transformer’ tables

“These are hulls with a powerful back end that attain maximum sailing length and low resistance while heeled thus the lowest possible displacement/length ratio and they provide excellent balance through the range of heel angles in combination with the well proven twin rudder set-up.”

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

The tables combine for dining

Frers says the yacht is easy to handle and cruise in its standard version and race in its performance set-up, which includes a square-top mainsail and bowsprit for the light weather and downwind sails.

New features include two ‘transformer’ tables in the wide cockpit and an extra-long swim platform. Shorthanded cruising benefits from five electric winches positioned to allow a single crew member to handle the boat alone. Ahead of the mast, a wide sunbathing area integrated into the coachroof offers a self-tacking track, designed for the staysail but also suitable for the jib.

Princess staged the world premiere of its new V50 Open at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where it was on display beside the V55 in the British builder’s seven-strong line-up. The Plymouth shipyard’s display was headed by the flagship X95 and included the S78, S66 and S62 sportbridge models, as well as the V55, V50 Open and V40 sports yachts.

The world premiere of the V50 was held at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March, with the Open version – featuring a completely different main-deck layout – debuting in Cannes.

Designed by the Princess Design Studio with naval architects Olesinski and Italian design house Pininfarina, the V50 has been created using new deep-V hull, deck and canopy moulds. Volvo Penta IPS600 or IPS650 engines provide top speeds over 30 knots, while the yacht has a longer cruising range than the outgoing V50 due to increased fuel capacity.

An intuitive IPS system and joystick simplifies piloting, while the addition of the fully integrated Volvo Penta assisted docking system can help cope with wind, current and manoeuvring in crowded marinas. Additional technology includes premium audio from Naim and the new Garmin On-Deck smart boat system, an integrated remote connectivity solution which tracks, monitors and controls selected on-board systems via a smartphone app.

The V50’s styling includes a new extended full-length hull window graphic which integrates the aft air intake, also seen on the V55. The canopy styling blade is available with an optional paint contrast to enhance the sporty aesthetic. Textured contrasting fabrics elevate the finish, with a new fabric collection implemented across all new and upcoming models in the V and S Class ranges.

The standard V50 features an aft C-shaped sofa and forward corner sofa in the cockpit, while the Open version features a large central sun pad aft. An elongated canopy provides a comfortable shaded area.

In the standard version, patio doors enclose the deck saloon, which has a C-shaped sofa and dining area, while opposite is a sideboard concealing a rise-and-fall TV. The Open version has an asymmetrical C-shaped sofa to starboard, and a chaise longue to port.

Sunseeker International announced 12 sales of the 100 Yacht, including one to Asia, as the new flagship of the Yacht range had its world premiere among its nine-strong display at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

The British builder also announced 15 orders for the Predator 65, which had its global debut in the US earlier this year, along with 22 orders for the Superhawk 55, which is expected to launch by the end of the year and premiere at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2023. The orders are part of a forward order book of over £600 million (about US$700 million), equal to two years of annual turnover.

After nearly doubling the range from 11 models to 20 from 2019 to 2021, Sunseeker has also announced £40 million for new product development and production capability – a record investment for the company – as it plans to launch a total of 12 new models during the 2022-2025 period while expanding its portfolio to 22 models.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO of Sunseeker International, said: “Our position as we start the boat show season at Cannes is one of the strongest in the company’s history. We have made significant investment in new product development and our facilities and people, and this has clearly paid off.

“We now have one of the strongest forward order books we’ve ever had. We delivered our 2019-2021 strategy and have a comprehensive plan for 2022-2025, which will see record investments and some of the most exciting product launches the market has ever seen.”

Upcoming models include the Ocean 182, which represents the yacht’s GT and is a new volume-focused name for the 90 Ocean Enclosed, the skylounge version of the 90 Ocean that debuted last year. The Ocean 182 is expected to have its European and American debuts at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show respectively.

Sunseeker is currently building about 140 boats a year, a figure that will increase slightly with the new investment outlined. The builder employs about 2,000 people and has hired a record 100 new apprentices for 2022.

In Dorset, Sunseeker has been expanding its Poole Quay premises to accommodate an increase in boats built and Willis Way is becoming a dedicated Superhawk 55 shipyard. The brand has expanded its Sunseeker Showcase by opening a new-look Shed 5, now used as an immersive experience for clients that brings the Superhawk 55 experience to life with VR technology.

Ferretti Group fielded a 25-strong line-up at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (click for earlier article) including five world premieres and a prototype of the El-Iseo, an electric version of the 27ft Iseo.

The new Custom Line 140’ enjoyed a clear view in the middle of Vieux Port, while the Ferretti Yachts 860 and Riva’s 102’ Corsaro Super, 76’ Bahamas Super and Anniversario (33ft) were the Group’s other world premieres. The wallypower58 made its Cannes debut following its world premiere at the Venice Boat Show.

Ferretti Group’s show partners included Land Rover, Campari, Cipriani, Culti, Dolce&Gabbana, Flamigni, Flexjet, Frette, Fornasetti, Lavazza, La Scolca and Venini. Ethimo provided the outdoor furniture, while Seabob returned as a partner, exhibiting limited-edition units with custom livery created specifically for the Group’s brands.

El-Iseo combines the history of the iconic Iseo runabout with environmentally sustainable technology. The prototype was earlier showcased at Ferretti Group’s seventh Private Preview, organised against the gorgeous backdrop of the Monaco Yacht Club.

Upcoming models include the Wallywhy150, which is 24m in length and 150GT, and set to launch in February and premiere in spring. As well as Wally sailing models like the custom 101 and wallywind110, other projects include Riva 82, Ferretti Yachts 580, Infynito 90 Ferretti Yachts, Custom Line Navetta 50 and Pershing GTX 80, which will follow the upcoming GTX116.

The Group now has a product range of 50 models, compared to 42 in 2021, and over 284,000sqm of production space.

Since June 30, the Group has received about €300 million of new orders, representing close to 50 per cent growth when compared to the same period in 2021 and leading to an order backlog of more than €1.3 billion. In the first half of 2022 (click for article), revenues totalling €534.9 million were up 17 per cent on the same period in 2021, while EBITDA adjusted stands at €69 million.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “Beautiful boats produce extraordinary results and vice-versa. This exceptional growth, in a truly magical year for us, is amazing but doesn’t surprise us as it’s the fruit of high levels of investment, hard work and careful planning.

“These first six months project us towards a year-end that I expect will be even more sensational, in line with the constant trend that for years has kept us at the top. If I think of Riva’s new electric prototype and all the new products that keep making our brands more successful. It is an absolute pleasure to be here representing the unique know-how that only Italy is able to bring to the international yachting scene.”

In addition, Ferretti Group has decided to support the UNICEF 7 Fund created by UNICEF and David Beckham. The aim is to act in some of the poorest areas of El Salvador and radically transform the facilities available for children, guaranteeing safe spaces in which they can dream and develop skills for their future.

Ferretti Group has decided to donate a magnificent Riva Anniversario, which will be auctioned and the entire proceeds devoted to safeguarding children in El Salvador. The silent auction (http://www.ferrettigroupforunicef.com) will be open for five months, concluding in Miami on February 16, 2023.

Groupe Beneteau unveils what’s ‘On The Horizon’

The French-owned conglomerate has outlined its vision for its boating brands including Beneteau, Jeanneau, Prestige, Lagoon and Excess.

Erik Stromberg, Vice-President of Power & Motor Yacht Development

Groupe Beneteau outlined its corporate vision in a press conference on the eve of the Cannes Yachting Festival, hosting more than 200 guests in the JW Marriott on the Croisette. The group said it would continue to focus on motor and sailing boats from 5.5-24m but “shifting from a volume-driven strategy to a value-driven strategy”.

Erik Stromberg, Vice-President of Power & Motor Yacht Development, said the company had launched 15 new models in the dayboating segment across four brands. He highlighted three new models by Jeanneau that debuted at Cannes: Cap Camarat 10.5 CC, Merry Fisher 1295 Fly and DB/43, the first in a new series.

“The DB/43 represents a bold launch, not only of a luxury dayboat but a brand-new range and a clear departure into a new market segment,” said Stromberg, whose presentation also included the Four Winns TH36 and Wellcraft 355.

In the ‘real estate on the water’ segment, Stromberg cited the new M48 power catamaran by Prestige, the first twin-hulled model by the monohull motor yacht specialist.

“Nothing embodies real estate like a multihull and Prestige has decided to blaze a path into the world of catamarans,” Stromberg said. “It’s a natural step for a brand that has been focused on providing the best on board experience. From the luxury of space to the enhanced stability, the M48 perfectly completes the Prestige product offering. A true motor yacht, on a multihull platform.”

Prestige also added the X60, which was making its Cannes debut after a global debut in the US earlier this year.

Damien Jacob, Vice-President of Sailboat Development

Damien Jacob, Vice-President of Sailboat Development, highlighted the new Lagoon 51 incorporating more sustainable materials onboard such as natural fibres in the composite, while the new Excess 14 continues the brand’s aim to offer the excitement of sailing a monohull onboard a multihull with twin helm stations.

The multihull segment is very dynamic, and the recent worldwide crisis pushed even more people in that direction,” Jacob said. “Multihulls embody the aspiration of many sailors for more freedom on the water. Lagoon and Excess aim to answer to the various uses of the multihull sailors and the two brands offer a specific boating experience.”

Meanwhile, new sailing monohulls included Beneteau’s new flagship Oceanis Yacht 60, First 44 and First 36, with the First series celebrating its 45th anniversary. Meanwhile, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 is expected to debut at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2023.

“With a wide range of product ranging from pure racer to pure cruiser, Beneteau and Jeanneau are now the world market leaders,” Jacob said. “This position has given us the opportunity to venture into new trends.”

Green vision

Groupe Beneteau addresses the challenge of sustainable boating by looking at both product development and manufacturing processes.

Groupe Beneteau, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Prestige, Lagoon, Excess, Gianguido Girotti, Erik Stromberg, DB/43, Damien Jacob

Gianguido Girotti, CEO, Boat Division

Gianguido Girotti, CEO of Groupe Beneteau’s Boat Division, said: “On the product development side, we are currently focused on reducing the environmental impact in two key areas: composite materials and propulsion systems.”

Focusing on composite materials, Groupe Beneteau set up a special project team for the first hull of Beneteau First 44, collaborating with the French resin manufacturer Arkema to build a prototype with 100% recyclable resin.

This expertise in composite materials will be used also to build two prototypes of a Mini 6.5 racing sailboat using these same materials for The Arch project. These versions of the Beneteau First 44 and the Arch Mini 6.5 will be presented to the public during the winter boat shows.

Beside composite materials, the other game-changer in product development is the transition towards reduced emission or emission-free propulsion systems, and Groupe Beneteau is cooperating with Vision Marine Technologies and Torqeedo on different models, as well as Volvo Penta on a hybrid engine project.

Girotti said: “We decided to change the way we produce our small composite parts and we introduced a new bio-sourced resin and natural fibre to replace the classic one. We also decided to look at the energy consumption at our plants.”

Cocktails after the press conference

The company is also collaborating with Vendée Energie to install four hectares of photovoltaic ‘shadehouse’ over parking lots at production sites.

“At Groupe Beneteau, we also keep in mind that being sustainable is focus on making boating accessible. Our boats and yachts are the result of top-class industrial processes and we care about our customers as well as we care also about our earth and oceans. Sustainable boating will be more and more our key focus.”

Digitalisation shift

The third focus is a shift to increased digitalisation. Last year, Groupe Beneteau presented Seanapps and already 2,000 boats are equipped with the technology. By September 2023, every single boat leaving the plants worldwide will be also equipped with the app. Moreover, it will be available to be retrofitted to every existing boat maintained in the Group’s dealers’ network.

Clement Douet, Vice-President for Digital Business, said: “At Groupe Beneteau we strongly believe that digitalisation will help us build a special and unique bond between our boats, our clients, our dealers and our brands.

At Groupe Beneteau, digitalisation is not just a department to look good and speak to the new generation. Digitalisation transpires to every single entity to align on one goal: offer a unique 360-degree online and offline experience to every single one of our customers.”
