A new Beneteau First 36 will arrive in Asia in spring 2022 following the model’s world premiere at Boot Dusseldorf from January 22-30. Asian dealer Simpson Marine has secured a stock model of a boat that Beneteau believe “will be a weapon for club handicap racing” yet has a 12ft 6in-wide hull with a spacious three-cabin interior that offers similar living volume to the First 40.7.

Richard Allen, Group General Manager of Simpson Marine, said: “This will be a very popular model as it goes back to the Beneteau heritage of building fast cruiser-racers that can perform well on a racecourse but also be perfect for a family cruising. We have one secured for 2022 and have the possibility to get one more.”

Featuring a 36ft 1in hull, the yacht has an all-star design team including French naval architect Sam Manuard, whose designs have won Mini, Class 40, Orma, Multi 50 and IMOCA 60 classes. Manuard is also the designer of Beneteau’s new First and First SE series from 14-27ft, following Beneteau’s partnership with Slovenia’s Seascape in 2018.

Exterior styling is by Italian Lorenzo Argento, with the First 36 following the design language of Beneteau’s First Yacht 53 and Oceanis Yacht 54. New Zealand’s Pure Design & Engineering are responsible for structural engineering, having worked on some of the world’s most advanced sailing boats including TP52, AC75, AC72, IMOCA 60s and Club Swan, as well as high-end production yachts. Slovenia’s Gigodesign worked on innovation and research.

Beneteau, First 36, sailing, yacht, Simpson Marine, Sam Manuard, Lorenzo Argento, Richard Allen, Pure Design & Engineering, Gigodesign, Seascape, SloveniaThe saloon has facing sofas and two foldout tables

The First 36’s mission is “to bridge the gap between high-tech development in the world of racing and mainstream racer-cruisers” and a low displacement means even the standard version will fully plane in a moderate breeze. As well as bringing the experience of planing into the hands of amateur sailors, the yacht has a carefully designed deck layout that enables both short-handed and fully crewed racing, while a practical three-cabin interior allows for cruising.

Positioning six winches, steering wheels, and other deck gear was thoroughly tested on several mock-ups and a full-scale testbed sailboat. Details like an offshore hatch on the foredeck or removable cockpit benches show the priority of sailing functionality over style used throughout the design process.

Beneteau, First 36, sailing, yacht, Simpson Marine, Sam Manuard, Lorenzo Argento, Richard Allen, Pure Design & Engineering, Gigodesign, Seascape, SloveniaForward view of the interior, highlighting the full navigation table

A standard aluminium rig and cast-iron keel were chosen to keep the boat accessible, while the draft of 2.25m was chosen as a compromise between performance and ease of use.

In the racing layout, the wide and modern cockpit allows for different helm and trim positions, either for short-handed or fully-crewed sailing. In this setup, the table and bench extensions are removed, opening the working area in the cockpit. A higher-than-average steering wheel position leaves enough room for the helmsman to move forward towards the mainsail winch when sailing shorthanded.

The cockpit winches’ positioning allows one or two crew members to sail with legs in and work the mainsail or primary winches in full crew mode. It also allows cross-sheeting of all sheets to the windward side. Harken, Ronstan, Spinlock and Antal deck gear were combined for performance. The First 36 has an upwind sail area of 80sqm (860sqft) and a downwind sail area of 180sqm (1,930sqft).

The First 36 set up for racing

For cruising or day sailing, the cockpit benches with cushions increase the seating area and add storage space and rope organisation. The cockpit table is big enough to seat a crew of six, while an ultralight bathing platform gives easy access to the water.

The interior features three cabins full-sized double berths, while Beneteau describes the galley with a large central fridge as the largest in her class. A corridor created together with the foldable, removable table helps sailors move around the saloon safely and offers stacking possibilities.

The First 36 features a full-sized navigation table, which can also double as a home office. Two portlights in every room allow air flow and natural light, while sectional indirect lighting with a red racing option illuminates the boat at night.

Sled’s one-point win in the World Championship in Palma also earned them their first 52 Super Series title after a three-regatta season in Spain.

Sunreef, yachts, powercat, motor yacht, catamaran, luxury, Francis Lapp, Agnieszka Blizniuk, 100 Sunreef Power, superyacht Owner Takashi Okura couldn’t participate as Sled won the Rolex TP52 World Championship

Takashi Okura’s Sled team were crowned as this year’s 52 Super Series champions and Rolex TP52 World Championship winners in Palma, Mallorca. Sled has competed on the series since January 2014 and became only the third crew to have won the circuit, following Azzurra (2012, 2015, 2017, 2019) and Quantum Racing (2013, 2014, 2016, 2018).

Holding a one-point lead in both the series and Worlds after the penultimate day, the team which won two of this season’s three regattas had a nervous wait ashore until the final day’s scheduled racing had to be cancelled because of gale-force Mistral winds on the Bay of Palma.

Sled won the Rolex TP52 Worlds by one point from both Doug DeVos’ Quantum Racing and Harm Müller Spreer’s Platoon, securing the series by one point from the former and two from the latter.

Kiwi helmsman Murray Jones, a five-time America’s Cup winner, said: “We are just delighted. It was hard to sit around and wait when we really were keen to get out there and race. We like sailing in the breeze as a team. We were a bit disappointed not to go sailing but we’ll take it!”

Sled’s experienced team represents the New York Yacht Club, but is a multicultural mix including other America’s Cup winning New Zealanders such as veteran Don Cowie, the mainsheet trimmer and project manager, and Josh Junior, the youthful Finn Olympic ace and more recent AC winner.

Their overall victory required them to overcome successive crew line-up changes imposed by travel restrictions. All their core Japanese sailors had to miss the second regatta and substitutes found.

Usual Australian ace Adam Beashel called tactics for the first regatta win in Puerto Portals in Mallorca (August 23-28), then Italian Francesco Bruni had to step in cold when Beashel could not travel for the second and third events in Menorca (September 27-October 2) and the Worlds (November 1-6) in Mallorca.

Okura, the passionate owner-driver, could not attend this season because of the health situation, but his crew and the circuit paid him a warm tribute for making sure Sled was on all the start lines this season.

The foreshortened three-event circuit went right to the wire, proving the closest season yet with five boats arriving in Palma within four points of each other, but a substantial win in what proved to be the breezy final race of the season proved conclusive.

Bruni, Sled’s tactician, said: “This class is the pinnacle of the sport and it’s great to see the TP52 class with this strength again. I think it’s going to stay strong, and this year has been really incredible. It is impressive that the circuit has boats with such a high level. And this has been a real team effort.

“Without a doubt, this week was a bit tougher than the usual because of the stress and the nerves. Concentration was the key and trying to overcome the bad moments, which we all had. In the end it is a very close competition: one point has decided the whole season.”

As Rolex TP52 World Champions, Sled joins Rán Racing, two-time victors Azzurra, Platoon and six-time world champions Quantum Racing.

For its newest model, Italy’s Bluegame has combined the huge aft platform and lower-deck saloon of its ground-breaking BGX series with the open style of its BG range. Welcome aboard the BG72, which offers the best of both worlds from a brand that’s growing fast in Asia.

The Bluegame BG72 showed at Cannes, Genoa and Monaco

For the BG72’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, Bluegame’s newest model was nestled with a BG42, BGX60 and BGX70 among an imposing selection of Sanlorenzo yachts ranging from the SX76 to as big as the SD126, a 38m superyacht with a volume of 314GT.

Although towered over by flybridge and trideck models from their sister brand, Bluegame boats sat proudly in the heart of the Jetée among the show’s leading exhibitors, with Azimut and Ferretti Group models along to the left, Princess and Sunseeker to the right.

The BG72 shares the same Lou Codega-designed hull as the BGX70

Having then shown at the Genoa International Boat Show, the BG72 even leveraged off Sanlorenzo’s muscle to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show, where she was the smallest boat on display in the world’s premier superyacht show.

In the same way Bluegame’s recent rebirth has been propelled by its mother company, so the brand is fast emerging in Asia under Simpson Marine, which has been Sanlorenzo’s exclusive partner in Asia since 2015.

The huge platform is even bigger than on the BGX70

After also taking on Bluegame last year, the region’s biggest dealer brought the high-profile BGX70 to Hong Kong to kick-start the brand’s presence, which has proved its worth. The company now has similarly high hopes for the BG72, which has many of the BGX70’s attributes but with an open-style main deck.

Nick Stratton, Sales Manager for both Sanlorenzo Asia and Bluegame Asia, says: “The BG72 shares aspects with the BGX70 like the iconic profile, plus the huge platform and the aft lower-deck saloon, which aren’t seen on any other brands. The beam and the social spaces, especially on the magnificent stern platform, provide a new way of life at sea.

“However, like all models in the BG range, the BG72 has a spacious, bright and airy main deck. It’s a great boat, with enhanced circulation between the lower and main deck, and even more light in the lower saloon. Owners love the modern styling, and we expect it to be equally popular as the BGX70.”

BLUEGAME’S GROWTH IN ASIA

It’s a bold statement considering Simpson Marine has announced sales of three BGX70s, a unit of the BGX60 that debuted in late 2020 plus one and two hulls respectively of the open-style BG62 and BG42 that kick-started Bluegame’s rebirth three years ago.

Sanlorenzo had previously owned the brand founded by Luca Santella until the financial crisis of 2008 led to it being put on the shelf in 2012. The two-time Olympic sailor later became Design Development Manager at Sanlorenzo and worked with Zuccon International Project on the SX range.

Like the rest of the BG series, the BG72 has an open design

After Santella revealed designs showing how Bluegame could help ‘extend’ the SX concept to models smaller than the SX76, Sanlorenzo Executive Chairman Massimo Perotti moved to revive the brand.

“When Sanlorenzo re-introduced Bluegame as part of its portfolio, it marked a rebirth of an attractive niche brand for a specific kind of customer, but now the brand is growing very quickly worldwide and that also includes Asia,” Stratton said. “Bluegame takes advantage of Sanlorenzo’s quality and expertise in build, but addresses owners looking for smaller sizes.

Knowing Sanlorenzo’s reputation, customers feel confident about Bluegame, so growth is significantly quicker than introducing a totally new brand to the market.

Bluegame, BG72, new, world premiere, debut, BGX70, BGX60, Sanlorenzo, Simpson Marine, Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa International Boat Show, Monaco Yacht Show, Luca Santella, Nick Stratton, Massimo Perotti, BG54, BG62, BG42

View from the forward end of the platform

“It’s a brand that innovates, is different but also bespoke. The yachts look trendy and streamlined, have a very pleasant circulation and feel of spaciousness.”

While the BG42 and BG62 were updates of former Bluegame models, it was the BGX70 that made the brand a true influencer in the motor yacht world. Sanlorenzo’s SX88 and SX76 featured extralong swim platforms just a few steps from a clear-backed cockpit, providing more living space close to water level. However, the two-deck BGX70 took the concept to a new level.

Designed by Santella with Zuccon and with a hull by Lou Codega, it made the platform even longer and included an aft saloon on the lower deck, which also housed the guest cabins. The more conventional main deck features an aft cockpit, enclosed saloon, galley and helm, as well as an open foredeck.

REARRANGED LOWER DECK

Bluegame, BG72, new, world premiere, debut, BGX70, BGX60, Sanlorenzo, Simpson Marine, Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa International Boat Show, Monaco Yacht Show, Luca Santella, Nick Stratton, Massimo Perotti, BG54, BG62, BG42

The saloon benefits from light through the sliding doors and see-through stairways

The BG72 shares the same 18ft-wide Codega hull, housing the Volvo Penta IPS drives under the aft deck, but it’s a lot more different to the BGX70 than initial glances suggest. Among changes are an almost completely reconfigured lower deck with an aft master suite option, a completely new main deck befitting BG’s open style, while even the bow area has been redesigned.

In fact, even the huge platform has been lengthened aft, with the BG72 more than 3ft longer overall than the BGX70. Furthermore, instead of only starboard stairs to the main deck, there are also stairs to port.

Bluegame, BG72, new, world premiere, debut, BGX70, BGX60, Sanlorenzo, Simpson Marine, Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa International Boat Show, Monaco Yacht Show, Luca Santella, Nick Stratton, Massimo Perotti, BG54, BG62, BG42

The saloon features a lounge to starboard and a dining area to port

The hull shown at Cannes, Genoa and Monaco features the standard aft-saloon option, while the owner chose distinctive materials and colours, including Canaletto walnut wood plus leather and fabrics in light and blue tones.

Compared to the BGX70, the entrance is now on the port side, while the room itself has been extended and rearranged. In the absence of enclosed dining on the main deck, a dining area has been included on the port side, where it sits alongside the semi-enclosed, L-shaped galley.

The master suite is in the bow and has an aft-facing bed

The lounge is to starboard and has an improved layout, with an L-shaped sofa allowing views aft of the platform and water. There’s also room for chairs by the sliding glass doors, which provide more natural light than on its predecessor.

The central corridor leads to a hallway accessing the three en-suite guest cabins, starting with twins port and starboard. Forward are the stairs and the owner’s suite, which has an aft-facing bed against a mirrored bulkhead and an elegant bathroom to starboard.

The master suite’s elegant en-suite bathroom is to starboard

The BG72’s alternative lower-deck layout replaces the saloon with the master suite, which would offer the owners stunning views and the opportunity to wake up looking over the water to the horizon. In this option, the saloon, galley and a twin cabin are positioned midships, with the VIP suite in the bow.

BREEZY MAIN DECK

Accessible from either the exterior aft stairs or internal stairs up to the helm, the main deck has an open design that starts aft with a triple sunpad that’s not covered by the hardtop but can be by an attached bimini.

The main deck has a wide sunpads, facing sofas and wet bar forward

The sunpad looks forward to a sofa to port and an L-shaped sofa and expandable table to starboard, all offering a pleasant covered social area. There’s also the option of some informal alfresco dining as there’s a wet bar just forward of the sofas.

The impressive pilot house has a reverse-angle windscreen and is enclosed on three sides, while the aft doors can shut when the room needs to be fully enclosed, whether for privacy or bad weather.

The pilothouse can be fully enclosed

The double helm seat sits under a slatted sunroof and faces a nice display with three large Garmin screens, central throttle, joystick control and smart docking as part of the IPS system, which is renowned for fuel efficiency. Like the BGX70, the BG72 reaches 28 knots with twin 900hp IPS 1200s and 30 knots with the 1,000hp IPS1350s.

There’s easy circulation throughout the main deck and high bulwarks ensure safe passage to the foredeck, which features flexible furniture comprising a sofa and a large sunpad. As with the aft sunpad, this area can also be covered in a bimini, while the sunpad itself disguises the entrance to the twin-bunk crew cabin.

The foredeck features a sofa and a flexible forward sunbathing area

However, there’s one more sunbathing area, up on the roof of the hardtop. Accessed by a steep stairway forward of the port sofa, the simple sun deck features four adjoining sunpads across the hardtop, just aft of the sunroof.

There’s more to come from this brand next year with the BG54, which features many elements from the BG72’s open main deck and again shows a brand with a strong DNA that’s more than solely an extension of Sanlorenzo.

Bluegame, BG72, new, world premiere, debut, BGX70, BGX60, Sanlorenzo, Simpson Marine, Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa International Boat Show, Monaco Yacht Show, Luca Santella, Nick Stratton, Massimo Perotti, BG54, BG62, BG42

The ‘sun deck’ on top of the hard top offers another sunbathing area

“Bluegame is the brand of the future for an active, younger, curious and lifestyle-focused owner,” Stratton says. “We believe the brand will keep growing in Asia and are awaiting eagerly its new models to join our expanding fleet in this region.”

Bluegame is well supported by Sanlorenzo, but the little sister is growing up fast and starting to make a name for herself.

The International SeaKeepers Society, Asia (SeaKeepers Asia) has presented Dr Zeehan Jaafar with the SeaKeeper of Singapore Award for her contribution to marine science and conservation.

A marine biologist and lecturer with the Department of Biological Sciences at National University of Singapore, Dr Jaafar specialises in the evolution, ecology and behaviour of fish and has been working for the protection of the reefs at Southern Islands.

She has led efforts to document and build a DNA library of the fish of Singapore and was the co-lead in curating an online ‘fish library’ of 500 species, five previously unidentified, with the help of scientists from Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory.

Dr Jaafar was also the lead editor for Singapore’s Blue Plan 2018, a document presented to the government by the community for the conservation of marine areas in Singapore. A ground-up initiative led by five marine biologists and with over 100 contributors, it includes scientific and legislative data to support the proposed recommendations.

In the Blue Plan, habitat types such as seagrass meadows and mangrove areas are proposed for preservation in addition to coral reefs, the focus of earlier recommendations. The protection of island clusters, instead of specific coral reef areas, is recommended for the first time to ensure interconnectivity between habitats is preserved.

The Blue Plan consists of six recommendations as a multi-approach strategy towards the holistic management of marine areas through active protection of remaining areas; ongoing scientific studies that can inform management decisions; implementation of sound environmental policies; and education and public outreach.

Dr Jaafar has also formed working groups to work on the six recommendations to create awareness on local marine biodiversity and subsequently improved management on the fragile habitats. She also engages in broad marine conservation issues and strives to understand through scholarly pursuits and through on-the-ground efforts by volunteering at various marine areas in the region.

Dr Jaafar is the latest recipient of awards from The International SeaKeepers Society (SeaKeepers), which was founded in 1998, while the Asia chapter headed by Julian Chan was formed in 2015.

In June 2015, SeaKeepers launched the SeaKeepers of the World Programme to identify individuals who demonstrate a commitment to ocean research and conservation in their local communities. The SeaKeepers Board of Directors recognises individuals whose environmental goals and scientific and conservation efforts align with the SeaKeepers mission to Research, educate, protect and restore.

As founder and Director of VP Yachts, Vivian Chan is fast making a name for herself as the Hong Kong dealer for Italian builder Sessa, even if it appears a world away from her other role as General Manager of her family’s Sun Hing Shipyard.

Vivian Chan under a ‘wing’ of a Sessa F68 Gullwing

Vivian Chan looks to be in her element in what she calls the “glamorous side” of the yachting industry, looking every inch the model during a photo shoot aboard a Sessa F68 Gullwing as founder and Director of VP Yachts, which represents the Italian builder in Hong Kong.

For a couple of weekends before that, she was mingling with representatives of the likes of Ferretti Group, Sunseeker, Benetti, Monte Carlo Yachts and Camper & Nicholsons aboard a Riva 110’ Dolcevita at two events hosted by Voyager Risk Solutions this summer.

VP Yachts has already sold multiple Sessa motor yachts since the company’s appointment in November 2020, but for Vivian, the circles she now finds herself mixing in seem a world away from her ongoing role as General Manager of Sun Hing Shipyard, founded by her father Chan Ki in 1981.

Vivian is new to what she calls the “glamorous side of yachting”

“I never got to go out on these beautiful boats until recently. I typically go on a boat to see what needs to be fixed and the only times I really go out to sea was for sea trials. I’ve seen the hull bottoms more than I’ve seen the interiors,” laughs Vivian, who manages her dual roles from the shipyard’s main site, in Shum Wan on the east side of the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.

“After I started working for my dad, people kept wondering, ‘who’s this blonde Chinese woman standing on the pontoon’? When I saw my brother working for Simpson Marine, I saw the glamorous side. I always thought it was a world I wouldn’t reach because I was always on the other side, behind the scenes.”

PRODIGAL DAUGHTER RETURNS

Vivian says it was her father’s hope that his children would work in yacht sales, rather than the repair and maintenance field he has specialised in since working at the Supercraft yard in Tsing Yi before founding Sun Hing Shipyard. Despite the family business, Vivian says she rarely spent any time on boats when she was young.

“We didn’t go out boating and I only visited the shipyard a few times when I was young. I didn’t know much about what he did. I knew he liked fixing boats, but he never talked about going on them. I only started going on boats when I started working for him.”

In the early 1990s, the family moved to Canada, initially to Vancouver before settling in Toronto, where Vivian and elder brothers William and Eric went to school. However, unable to find similar work in Canada, her father was back and forth between Toronto and Hong Kong, while both her brothers returned to the city in the early 2000s after graduating from universities in Ontario.

Like Eric, Vivian studied at Ryerson University and gained a BA in Architectural Science. But unlike her brothers, she stayed in Toronto, even after her mother had also moved back to Hong Kong. It was a family crisis that drew her back to the city to start working at Sun Hing Shipyard in 2011.

During a trying time for the family, her uncle decided to start his own business, so the site and staff were split into two, with the shipyards remaining side by side today.

“We literally split the shipyard in half,” says Vivian, whose first job was to put her architectural skills to use by designing the new office and floor plan. “I didn’t know much about boats, but I was just here to support my Dad along with the workers, as many have been with him for a long time.”

GROWING ROLE

After the split, Vivian worked alongside her dad in the office as Project Coordinator, alongside a team of five service staff including Chan Bong-wah, who still works at Sun Hing and has now been working with Chan Ki for four decades.

It was a surprising new role for Vivian, not only because of her lack of experience in the industry but because her father had always advised his children to work in other fields.

“My dad felt the shipyard business doesn’t make a lot of money, so he never really encouraged my brothers or I to work here. He’d say, you’re better off going to a dealer like Simpson Marine. My dad would prefer his kids to be meeting the owners of boats rather than just fixing the boats.”

To her father’s delight, Eric had joined Simpson Marine in 2010, working as a broker for Asia’s largest yacht dealer for nine years before setting up Deepsea Marine HK.

William, after over a decade working in other fields, also joined the yacht sales industry in 2013, working for Jebsen Marine and Starship Yachts before founding his own brokerage company, Sunshine Yachting, in 2017, with an office at Sun Hing’s original shipyard.

Meanwhile, Vivian had been trying to ensure her father’s business could stay afloat with the added pressure of direct competition next door, as her language skills and overseas education helped her connect with many international dealers and companies.

“A lot of dealers came to us because I can speak English with them. I pretty much turned into a translator for my Dad at the beginning,” she laughs.

Vivian and Eric at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Vivian remembers attending her first international boat show at the 2014 Hainan Rendez-Vous, having joined the delivery trip of an 80ftplus motor yacht from Hong Kong. Over the years her experience and exposure increased, including attending the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2017 and 2018.

Furthermore, her responsibility and importance quickly grew, as she became General Manager of Sun Hing Shipyard while her father slowly started to hand over the reins.

Seeking other revenues for the company, she was involved in successful bids to lease shipyard lots in Ap Lei Chau, where Sun Hing has a second site. New services include boat collecting, assembling and commissioning for yacht dealers, all now proving important to VP Yachts.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Last year, in a further boost for the company, Vivian helped Sun Hing Shipyard become Dufour’s North Asia service centre, an appointment that began a sequence of events leading to her new role representing Sessa.

Vivian was appointed Sessa dealer in November 2020

Kevin Corfa of Dufour Asia remotely introduced Vivian to China-based Brian Zhuang, whose company Omnia Marine represents multiple brands including Dufour and Sessa, the inland Italian yacht builder he bought in 2015. Zhuang mentioned that a new Sessa F68 Gullwing was still in Hong Kong, unable to be imported to China due to Covid restrictions, so asked Vivian for help in selling it.

Last November, she exhibited the 21m flybridge motor yacht at the third HKCYIA-organised Hong Kong Yacht Show, an invitation-only event held for a second year beside the Kai Tak Runway Park. The blue-hulled Sessa flagship proved one of the star attractions among the 17 boats at the show.

While fronting the boat, she received multiple visitor enquiries as to whether she was an official Sessa representative, so called Zhuang to ask how she should respond. He quickly confirmed her status as the dealer for Hong Kong.

“I felt this was a good chance to expose the Sessa 68 and it was the show-stopper. Our boat really stole the show,” she says. “I learned so much during those three days. I had been to dealer displays in Hong Kong, so I followed what I’d seen about how to dress and present the boat, uniforms for staff and crew, invitations, catering and so on.”

More importantly, she was also making her first sale, even if she didn’t realise it at the time. Among the visitors on board the Sessa was a family friend, who mentioned he wanted the boat. “I thought he was joking,” she laughs.

However, he followed up after the show to check if the yacht was for sale. “The boat had been in Kwun Tong for nine months, so I thought he wanted to order a new unit, but he didn’t want to wait.”

Sessa models include the new Key Largo 40

Now joining her brothers in the world of yacht sales, Vivian created a new company, VP Yachts – representing the initials of her and her daughter – and had to quickly get up to speed with Sessa.

Based at an inland facility outside Bergamo, east of Milan, Sessa builds cruiser and flybridge motor yachts ranging from the new C35 – among its five models at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival – to the F68 Gullwing, a stunning design distinguished by lifting doors on each side of the saloon.

It also builds the Key Largo brand range of inboard and outboard cruisers ranging from the 24 to the 40 that premiered at last year’s Genoa International Boat Show and was also on display at Cannes and Genoa this year.

VP Yachts’ first sale of this year was an F47, one of Sessa’s newer models, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2022, while over the summer Vivian sold a C38 to a first-time boat owner.

IN-HOUSE SERVICE

In her brief time as a yacht dealer, Vivian has quickly realised the importance of her family’s shipyard, not only in providing service and fast repairs but as a reassurance for potential buyers.

“The buyer of the F47 was recommended to talk to me because we have a shipyard so we can always look after the boat,” she says. “I’m so glad I have a shipyard in this role. It saves a lot of time compared to claiming warranties and waiting for parts or a repair.

Vivian heads a strong team at Sun Hing Shipyard

“A lot of the time we just fix it straight away and deal with the follow-up later. You want a happy customer, not someone annoyed and having to wait for someone to fix the boat. The longer I’m in this job, the more important I realise my shipyard is.”

Now managing both Sun Hing Shipyard and VP Yachts, Vivian has three other staff in the office and six technicians in the service department, cheekily adding: “My Dad comes in once a month to pick up his paycheque.”

Since Vivian became a dealer, Sun Hing has already been servicing other Sessa boats in Hong Kong, while VP Yachts also offers yacht management and is already providing the service for the owner of the F68 Gullwing. Looking ahead, Vivian is keen to keep growing both companies’ offerings.

“I’m really enjoying VP Yachts because it’s something I started myself. Now, I want to do everything including after-service, yacht management and much more. I think it’s important to know the whole experience of boating and I’m learning something new every day.”

The art of writing now crosses over to the art of tyre making in this new collaboration.

For most of us, it would be difficult to draw links between Montblanc and Pirelli, the global tyre manufacture whose history stretches back to 1872. But for those with discerning eyes, the commonality quickly surfaces, which is the use of rubber. And the result is a pen: the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872. This partnership joins the art of writing with the art of tyre-making, and the unique heritage of two companies.

The Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 is crafted of black rubber, a material familiar to both brands and is closely associated with their origin stories. Montblanc, in its early days, used ebonite (a type of vulcanised rubber) to make pens. While at Pirelli, the company started out by manufacturing rubber products of all kinds.

Montblanc Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli
Image: Montblanc

The use of rubber is a tasteful homage to both and the material is seen on the cap and barrel of this writing instrument. Stylistic elements of Pirelli are reinforced through the engraved pattern on the matt rubber of the pen and is inspired by the sgorbiatori, craftsmen who carve tread by hand on the surface of prototype tyres. On the tip of the pen, the emblematic “P” appears on the Au 750 solid gold nip above a stylised running tyre with the Montblanc motif at its centre.

The black cone and cap top is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. Another uniting feature of the two companies is the colour red. And this symbolic hue is referenced on the Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 as red rings. This brings a bright accent to the pen’s cone and cap top.

Meisterstück Great Masters Pirelli Limited Edition 1872 is available as a fountain pen or rollerball at Montblanc boutiques worldwide now. For more information visit: montblanc.com

Patek Philippe drops three new chronographs on an eagerly waiting world: Ref. 5204R-011; Ref. 5905/1A-001; and Ref. 5930P-001.

Continuing its recent pattern of staggering new releases throughout the year, Patek Philippe dropped three new chronographs on an eagerly waiting world: Ref. 5204R-011; Ref. 5905/1A-001; and Ref. 5930P-001. To begin with, keen observers of Patek Philippe references will immediately realise that these are not all-new watches. All three are existing chronograph wristwatches with important and significant complicated movements that are now available in new materials, with new dial executions. With Ref. 5905/1A-001 and Ref. 5930P-001 in particular, we see on-trend elements that position these watches as novelties to catch the eye of the contemporary collector.

Having just seen these watches virtually, Patek Philippe tells us that we will be able to see them at their offices soon, and that they are on the way to retailers now (at least in Singapore, and other key markets that happen to be supply chain hubs). If you are a collector in good standing, no doubt you may have already received a call (or two). We will certainly have more to say about the watches soon enough, but for now, we will confirm the general buzz: Ref. 5905 will be the most talked-about, and likely the most sought-after.

Patek Philippe Ref 5204R, 2021
The Patek Philippe Ref. 5204R-011. Image: Patek Philippe

This is because it is a rare Patek Philippe multi-complication wristwatch in steel — we recall lusting after Ref. 5960/1A back in 2014 or 2015. It is a fine example of the annual calendar coexisting harmoniously with the chronograph; it is worth remembering that the annual calendar is closely associated with Patek Philippe because the manufacture introduced it in 1996. Ref. 5905 is also significant because it has been issued with a steel bracelet that looks the part of an integrated piece. The firm’s communication team notes that the bracelet is the same one currently deployed for the Aquanaut Ref. 5167/1A. The green dial here is the same shade as used in Ref. 5711/1A.

Backtracking to Ref. 5204R-011, this watch is a proper grand complication because it features the winning combination of split seconds chronograph and perpetual calendar. For a traditional fine watchmaking stalwart such as Patek Philippe, only a wristwatch that hits all the right notes can be called a grand complication, which the Genevan brand does in its own press materials. This watch exists in the current collection in rose gold, but is now also available with a slate grey dial and a matching shiny slate grey calf leather strap with embossed alligator pattern. This is one of a certain number of Patek Philippe watches offered with both sapphire crystal and solid casebacks. We cannot imagine anyone not wanting to view the manual-winding calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q; we will have more to say on this movement and the watches in general but we have a sense that we should wait till we see the watches, since that is just around the corner.

Patek Philippe Ref. 5930P-001, 2021
The Patek Philippe Ref. 5930P-001 Image: Patek Philippe

The third and final chronograph is Ref. 5930P-001, which brings together the world timer and the chronograph. The world timer complication is, like the annual calendar, deeply tied with Patek Philippe, thanks to its first such watch in 1939, reference 1415. Auction houses, in reminding collectors of the importance of the world time complication to Patek Philippe also point out its particular scarcity. They note that not a single Patek Philippe wristwatch with this complication was made between 1965 to 2000, despite strong demand. With ref. 5930P this year, there is now a bright green dial in play, with matching bottle green alligator strap. The names of the cities are also printed in green.

For other specifications and, in particular prices, please check the Patek Philippe website. As mentioned, we will be adding more depth ourselves in coming stories.

Gulf Craft has delivered the Majesty 175 to her owner, having premiered the world’s largest composite production superyacht in Dubai in May (click to read more). The 56.4m, 780GT superyacht “will visit global marinas and exotic destinations, underpinning Gulf Craft’s ‘Made in UAE’ capabilities prominently on the world yachting map”, the shipyard stated.

Mohammed Alshaali, co-founder and Chairman of Gulf Craft (click to read more), said: “The Majesty 175 is our jewel superyacht, which demonstrates our capability to manufacture trailblazing vessels fully in-house here in the UAE.

“The innovative composite design and engineering of the Majesty 175 are a testament to our position as a pioneer in the global yachting industry. We have created an exceptional world-first vessel on our home soil which was four years in the making, despite the challenges of the pandemic. It is a very proud moment to see her leave our facilities and set off on voyages around the globe.”

What’s the typical profile of HSBC Global Private Banking clients in Asia?

One of the core strengths of HSBC is our internal connectivity. We work closely with our Commercial Banking and Global Banking colleagues to support our clients across their corporate and personal banking needs.

For example, we’ll connect with an entrepreneur to discuss their wealth needs, from liquidity to financing, during the early stages of growth. We’ll work closely with our Commercial Banking partners to support the expansion of their business, including international growth. As they grow, they’ll either reinvest in their business or look to manage and protect their wealth, which is where Private Banking comes in with our investment and wealth solutions as well as our wealth planning and advisory team. It’s a very tried-and-tested model and sets us apart.

Of course, we also serve professionals and employees of companies. In Asia, sectors like finance, technology and healthcare are rising quite rapidly. And the wealth of these employees, which may be tied into shares as well, can blossom very quickly and unexpectedly. They need a trusted partner to help guide their long-term financial well-being.

We deal with clients from all backgrounds and industries. But the heart of our strategy is to support clients across their personal and corporate wealth needs, bringing human and financial capital to the table, to help them grow, manage and preserve their wealth.

What makes HSBC different to other banks in Asia dealing with such clients?

HSBC has been actively supporting Asia’s growth story for over 156 years. As part of the group, HSBC Global Private Banking is a leading global private bank, with a wide range of associations and established networks. We are unique in the industry by leveraging HSBC’s scale to provide end-to-end solutions and utilise the depth of HSBC’s global proposition and network.

As a global player with local expertise and our heart in Asia, we are committed to helping our clients grow, manage and preserve their wealth across generations and geographies. This year marks the 75th anniversary of HSBC Trustee in Asia. As one of the longest-serving Trustees in Asia, we are trusted by generations and have been a partner in helping many affluent families preserve their wealth and legacy for future generations to come.

Where does yacht financing fit in within HSBC’s services?

Yacht financing fits into what we call the trophy asset category. A couple of other key ones are private jets and art. They can all be categorised as ‘passion asset’ classes. I use that term because a yacht or plane can be hard to justify from a traditional investment return point of view, but they hold a different type of value, such as utility value, time-saving value or otherwise.

It’s a very important class of assets for our clients, especially the ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHWIs), who have investable assets over US$30 million. It’s not about enabling purchase, like others would buy something on a payment plan. It’s about really making those assets work harder and releasing equity to get a return. We might suggest that instead of putting US$50 million into this boat or plane, why not put down a percentage of that and then put the rest to work to defray that cost.

Our clients, especially the UHNWIs, have collateral and a lot of debt capacity. They’re comfortable in having debt, even in assets like this, especially with low interest rates. A key is to make sure that the collateral is top end, whether it’s an aircraft or a yacht, and have a tight structure, so it’s being maintained and kept in top order.

We’ve been very busy on the yacht financing side, talking to clients who are either buying their first vessel or upgrading. Since Covid, there has been a boom in demand for buying yachts, especially in Hong Kong, where getting out on a boat has been as close to having a holiday as you can get.

When clients seek to buy such assets, do you challenge them or pose questions to better understand the investment and costs?

We need to be realistic. We do often have a frank discussion with our clients when they’re looking to buy yachts or planes. For example, flying first-class is very affordable compared to owning a plane. For superyachts, we highlight the cost of ownership such as the classic rule of thumb, which is that annual running costs are about 10 per cent of the purchase price.

With Covid, people are feeling that ‘you only live once’ and are keen to own a yacht. It’s a fantastic way to spend your time and the types of clients that are looking at owning a yacht are in the wealth band where it works.

However, in my career, I’ve seen situations where people have had a windfall through an IPO or a liquidity event, and they rush to buy some of these assets. The reality is that buying a yacht or a plane is not like buying a sports car. It’s a very complex purchase, so we highlight that. When we structure the transaction and write up the analysis, we look into that and provide our take on the individual’s ability to service this.

At the end of the day, I’m not in the business of pure asset-based finance. We’re in the relationship banking business. We’re doing this because of who the client is. Our offering is quite unique in the market.

How are ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) considerations changing among your clients?

ESG has been increasing in importance for quite some time and one of the reasons is the emergence of younger wealth, the tech and financial entrepreneurs, and the next generation. If you look at the traditional billionaire tycoons in places like Hong Kong, their children or grandchildren are now taking over. They may have a very different world view and background to their parents and grandparents. This is very important.

When we look at yachts and builders, are they taking ESG into consideration when sourcing the teak for the decks? What are the carbon emissions on a yacht or a plane? The awareness around this topic is rising rapidly and I can see it evolving more widely. ESG is now a factor in almost all the investments our clients are making.

Do younger clients have a different mentality when investing?

An increasing number of our clients in the regions, especially the Next Generation clients, express strong interest in the durability of sustainability-related themes, because climate change is a scientific fact which will take decades to address. And our clients also like the fact that all stakeholders now seem to be aligned: governments, regulators, voters and consumers are now all committed to the net zero transition.

What are the current business priorities for HSBC Global Private Banking in Asia?

I want to highlight three areas. Firstly, we’re investing a lot in ultra-high-net-worth individuals, as you have to offer a lot more beyond a Private Banking platform. You need to be able to connect Commercial Banking and Investment Banking, bringing top-grade products, services and solutions to these clients.

Secondly, we’re earmarking a third of our Private Banking investment for mainland China. We already have teams in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, but we’re aggressively growing on the ground to become embedded into the financial system within mainland China itself, as opposed to just relying on the offshore banking model. Investment opportunities for individuals on the mainland are starting to diversify, so we want to be there to capture that opportunity.

Thirdly, we’re scaling up in Southeast Asia which has over half-a-billion people and some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, especially pre-Covid. When we think about Asian wealth, we look at the entire Asian opportunity, not only China, but other parts of the region, such as Singapore as an international wealth hub.

What else should people know about Global Private Banking at HSBC?

The Asian consumer and their growing wealth are the heart of HSBC. We’re investing US$3.5 billion into the Asia wealth franchise over the next five years to accelerate the growth of the wealth and personal banking business. We want to be the leading wealth manager in Asia.

We have all the ingredients, unique in the industry, by leveraging HSBC’s global proposition and network, including access to capital financing, capital markets participation, pre-IPO/direct investments, real estate and a tremendous balance sheet, which is hugely important for the ultra-high-net-worth segment. All this enables our clients to put their money into motion, whether it’s to buy assets or dispose of assets.

So, if you’re looking for one of the world’s largest international banks with an extensive global network and its root and knowledge in Asia, which understands you as an entrepreneur, HSBC is the bank for you. Combined with our commercial heritage, global and regional reach, capabilities and expertise, that makes HSBC Global Private Banking unique.
