Camper & Nicholsons has announced the sale of a 74ft Heysea solar-assisted powercat by Sales Broker Sebastien Wanig Bernard. The owner plans to spend long holidays with family on the yacht, which is scheduled to be delivered in April 2023 and will initially be used in the Mediterranean before relocating to Australia.

Italian studio VYD has designed the exterior and interior. The exterior lines have been customised by the owner, who required an extended superstructure to allow for the integration of an additional separated bow-saloon, while keeping a bow-cockpit alfresco area, accessible from inside and outside.

Consequently, the flybridge has been extended and now spans 840sqft. It features a convertible alfresco saloon-dining area, five sun beds, a wet bar with barbecue, fridges, icemaker and an impressive jacuzzi with an integrated bar.

The powercat will be able to accommodate eight guests in one master suite, one VIP and two guest suites, all with en-suite bathrooms. The master will feature a walk-in wardrobe, a private saloon and an owner’s office in earthy neutral tones.

The owner also changed the proposed engines to two 725hp Volvos for greater range, while two bow thrusters are wirelessly controlled by a DockMate joystick. Solar panels on the hard top means batteries will be able to operate for up to eight hours.

Ferretti Yachts is developing an 860, which will be the Cattolica-based shipyard’s third-biggest model behind the 920 and the new flagship 1000. The Ferretti Yachts 860 is the brand’s third yacht with an exterior by architect Filippo Salvetti and interiors by IdeaeItalia, following the 500 that launched in 2020 and the 1000 that debuted this year.

With an overall length of 88ft 5in, the flybridge motor yacht will be equipped with twin MAN V12 engines of 1,800mpm or 2,000mph, giving her a cruising speed of 24 or 27 knots and a top speed of 28 or 32 knots respectively, based on preliminary data. Seakeeper stabiliser or Zero Speed hydraulic fin systems can be installed on request.

The yacht has a sleek, powerful silhouette, floor-to-ceiling windows and glass fashion plates. The aft cockpit is a spacious area with a glass parapet at the stern, furnished with two facing sofas and a large central table. The beach area can be entered from either side of the yacht and provides access to the garage, which can contain two water toys, a 3.95m tender and a two-seater jet ski.

Other highlights include the possibility of configuring the flybridge with freestanding furniture alongside a big multi-function bar unit, the dinette area seating eight, and an optional jacuzzi on the aft deck. A hard top is available in fixed glass, opening glass or with shading blades. The foredeck features a space that can be converted from a dining area into a spacious sun pad.

Inside, standout features include opening windows on both sides, a helical staircase that connects the main deck to the lower deck, freestanding furniture and clean geometrical curves inspired by Art Deco.

Like other Ferretti Yachts with IdeaeItalia interiors, the 860 will be available in either a Classic mood featuring darker, warmer colours and striking contrasts or Contemporary with paler, cooler colours, characterised by tone-on-tone shades through to total white.

The lower deck provides four cabins with en-suite bathrooms: the master midships, the VIP forward and double and twin guest cabins. The kitchen is multifunctional based on market requirements, with the semi-raised helm station forward, clearly separated from the guest area.

Passenger flows are organised specifically to increase the levels of privacy of the owner and their guests, with the galley and service area separated from the lounge by sliding doors and the helm station providing direct access to the crew quarters, which contain two double cabins with private bathrooms.

Based in Mallorca, the first Silent 60 is the first of the brand’s solar-electric catamarans to be fitted with the optional kite sail system, which has been ordered on many more hulls.

Silent-Yachts has showcased its first Silent 60, which carries 42 solar panels for 17kWp of solar energy and is further boosted by the brand’s optional kite sail system.

Succeeding the 64 and 55 models, the Silent 60 is the first of the builder’s new generation of yachts that also include the 62 3-Deck, 80, 80 3-Deck and 100, with each 3-Deck offering a much larger flybridge that can be fully open or partially enclosed.

Silent-Yachts produce ocean-going yachts that are fully powered by solar energy and can cruise with zero emissions for up to 100nm a day. The Silent 60 is designed by Pattaya-based Dr Albert Nazarov and units are being built by nearby PMG Shipyard in Rayong (read more) and Silent’s own shipyard in Italy.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

Built in Thailand and now based in Mallorca, hull one has twin 250kW e-motors, a 100kW generator and 210kWh battery storage. However, the Silent 60 has a wide range of power options including two electric motors up to 340kW each and battery storage up to 286kWh.

KITE SAIL OPTION
A 9sqm or 13sqm kite sail can be fitted on any Silent-Yachts model and is housed in a storage locker under the foredeck along with an electric winch and a short, collapsible mast.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

On the first unit, the mast is connected by four shrouds to pad eyes on deck that distribute the forces through the hull structure. However, on subsequent deliveries – eight units with the kite wing option have been ordered to date – the mast will be mounted on a baseplate inside the locker to leave the foredeck clutter-free.

After inflating the kite, it’s released overboard to drift away on the surface of the water. Pulling on the lines launches it into the air and once it reaches the optimal flight height, it begins to trace a figure ‘8’ in the sky and generates power to pull the yacht.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

To stop kiting, the automated app controls move the kite to a position above the boat where it has the least pull on the line. From here it can be winched down electrically and collapsed over the foredeck ready for stowage.

PULL NOT PUSH
Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts (read more), said: “The main advantages of a kite over a conventional sail system are that it does not throw shade on the solar panels, does not need a tall mast and generates up to 10 times more power per square metre than a traditional sail.
At 5 Beaufort, we can drive with the kite indefinitely at 6-7 knots, which is faster than a comparable sailing catamaran in such wind conditions when crossing the ocean, for example.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

“In addition to that, it saves about 1.5 tons of weight compared to a conventional rig and costs much less. It makes even more sense for the Silent boats that run on renewable solar energy because the power generated by a kite easily exceeds the energy consumption of the system, so you can charge the batteries while cruising under kite power. And besides that, it’s great fun!”

The builder says a big advantage of a kite compared to a conventional sail is that the kite flies in much higher altitudes and therefore gets more steady, stronger winds, yet can be used at low wind speeds of less than 10 knots.

POWER STEERING
As the kite pulls the boat rather than pushes it like a conventional sail, it requires good steering capability, especially as a motor yacht typically has a small rudder and big propellers, contrary to a sailing boat. However, this problem can be solved by running the solar-powered motors at 100rpm, while a conventionally powered boat would need to run diesel motors when using a kite.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

Silent-Yachts Captain Mike Wandler said he had tested the performance of a 9sqm kite on different headings and at wind angles of up to 40 degrees. “Unlike a conventional sailing boat, the best results were directly downwind. Under kite power with no engines on or propellers turning, the boat speed was between 4-5 knots,” Wandler said.

“We then switched on the electric motors, drawing just 1kW each, to reduce drag from the propellers and improve the flow of water over the rudders for better steering. This led to boat speeds from 6-7 knots over the same headings, a significant improvement on our original predictions.”

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

The first Silent 60 has four guest cabins on the lower deck including a spacious full-beam master suite forward, although other layout solutions are available. The saloon has up to 2.3m of headroom, while other social areas include the aft cockpit, flybridge and the foredeck.

A sub-1m draft allows access to shallow bays, ideal for cruising grounds in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. The lifting hydraulic platform can carry a 4m tender, while the swim platforms on each side can be extended on an owner’s request to be able to carry a pair of electric jet-skis.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60, hull one, kite sail, Albert Nazarov, PMG Shipyard, Mike Wandler, solar power, solar-electric, catamaran, generator, batteries, solar panels, Mallorca

Featuring a new, high-performance hull form with a longer waterline and reverse bow, the Silent 60 has a cruising speed of 6-8 knots, but can reach 20 knots depending on the power options.

The owner of a newly delivered Y7 from Germany’s YYachts explains why he chose the German-built carbon 70-footer for long-distance cruising with his family.

YYachts was founded in 2016 by Michael Schmidt, a passionate regatta sailor and boat builder. Its portfolio currently consists of the Y7, Y8 and Y9 models, as well as Custom Division builds such as the new Tripp 90, profiled in Yacht Style Issue 62 (see link below).

All models are created exclusively from carbon composite in a new production facility in Wieck on the Baltic Sea, where it can produce fast, lightweight and easy-to-handle sailing yachts up to 30m.

In the US, a world-renowned designer is the owner of a newly delivered Y7. The Californian talks of why he chose YYachts, his input on the design, how important sustainable luxury is to him and his plans for long cruises.

How did you become aware of YYachts?
Good question. I think it was through posting on a blog. I started researching yachts after once pondering what it would be like to sail around the world with my family. It was a fleeting thought that somehow shocked me twice. First, that in my position as one of the leading designers of a world-renowned company, I was thinking about just getting out, and then I was shocked that I was shocked at my thoughts. Why was one so stuck in one’s ways?

So, how did this dilemma resolve itself?
I pursued the thought, of course, because we only have this one life. I researched on YouTube how families with children sail around the world. Who can take on which tasks, how does home schooling work, things like that. At some point I came across YYachts. I liked the pictures and the lines of the yacht. As a designer, I am quite demanding.

From your design perspective, what features do you particularly like about the Y7?
In general, I like the clean lines. Bill Tripp did a good job. The Y7 is a mixture of modern and traditional; I also like that in a sailing yacht.

To what extent did you involve yourself in the design?
I wasn’t entirely happy with the profile of the bow and the bowsprit, so I had both slightly modified, as well as some air vents. My wife and I then designed the interior according to our own ideas, using a layout from YYachts.

The Y7 interior designed for family use

What is your favourite spot on the Y7?
The saloon is already very large and cosy at the same time – an ideal space for our family of four. We had a sofa installed there with an extra-large reclining area. We also have a nice workstation, especially for home schooling but also for me when I need it. Upstairs, on deck, I really like the cockpit.

Was a motor yacht ever an option for you?
No, not at all. It was clear we would buy a sailing yacht. I have been sailing since I was a child, although I also took a 20-year break. My wife used to be a successful regatta sailor, so we are co-skippers.

As a test, however, we first bought a second-hand 58ft yacht and sailed it for many weeks in Greece. We had to be sure we could function as a family in this limited space and that everyone would like it. After that, the decision was made in favour of the Y7, as it is even easier to operate than the 58-footer we used in Greece.

How important is sustainability in yachting for you?
Very important. I like YYachts’ approach to building the models as green as possible. We had additional solar cells put on the bimini. And maybe we’ll even replace the diesels with electric motors later. In my garage on land, for example, there are only electric cars.

Where will you set off to first with your Y7? And what are your future travel plans?
We will probably be underway from July to October. We are planning a trip across western Sweden to Norway. Ultimately, however, we’ll have to wait and see how the entry regulations develop. Of course, the Mediterranean is also a nice place to sail. And at some point, we would like to arrive in New Zealand.

Long established as the region’s largest dealer, Simpson Marine has already confirmed 2021 is its record sales year. And even with the staff count across seven countries and regions now topping 130, the company founded and still led by Mike Simpson has plans to expand.

Just when you thought Mike Simpson might be ready to sail off into the sunset on his Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 Freedom, there he is at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. Up on stage, not once but twice, collecting awards for Simpson Marine’s sales of both Sanlorenzo and Bluegame at the brands’ beachside press conference in front of Le Majestic hotel.

Continuing to lead from the front, the man who developed Simpson Marine into Asia’s biggest yacht dealership – by far – seems as committed to his work today as he has been for the last 37 years since creating Simpson Marine in Hong Kong in 1984.

In Cannes, Simpson first stepped up to collect the prize for ‘Best 2021 Service and Sales Performance for Sanlorenzo Composite Yachts and Superyachts Worldwide’ before heading back up to collect Bluegame’s ‘Best 2021 Sales Progression’ award.

“Frankly, I was quite shocked when I realised what had been announced,” he says. “However, there could be no better testimonial to the amazing performance of the Simpson Marine sales teams around Asia and the support they have had from the service, marketing and administration teams. I was very proud to receive these awards on their behalf.”

RECORD BREAKERS

Simpson Marine is one of Asia’s longest-established dealerships, but far from sitting on its laurels, the company has had to change direction and switch partners on more than one occasion, no more so than in recent years.

An SL78 and SL86 in Hong Kong

Although the company’s representation of Beneteau harks back to 1985 and was later joined by Lagoon, the four other yacht builders it represents today are all relatively new to its portfolio, with Sanlorenzo (2015) followed by Aquila (2018), Fairline (2018) and Bluegame (2020).

Yet spearheaded by remarkable demand for Sanlorenzo, it’s these current partners combined with Hong Kong’s vibrant yachting market in the Covid era that has led to Simpson Marine announcing a record year – again.

The dealer had a record 2020, announcing over US$200 million in turnover following sales of 112 new and pre-owned yachts, yet even by October the company was happy to confirm that 2021 has been its most successful year to date.

“Like many people in the yacht industry, we feared the worst in early 2020 as Covid spread rapidly around the world. Unexpectedly, as travel restrictions were tightened, sales picked up in Hong Kong and by July it was clear that 2020 was going to be a record year,” Simpson says.

The Sanlorenzo Asia office in Singapore opened in 2020

“In other parts of Asia, the restrictions brought sales to a standstill and recovery has been slower. In the third quarter of 2021, sales orders reached unprecedented levels and this will be our best year ever. Orders for 2022 are also looking very strong.”

The company’s sales in Hong Kong post-Covid are about 50 per cent up on the previous average and helped to maintain the company’s business when countries in Southeast Asia were far more affected by lockdowns, although the company says these other markets, most notably Singapore, are recovering.

Furthermore, the company’s staff, which has averaged about 100 in recent years, has risen to 130 in its offices and service centres across seven countries and regions: Hong Kong, China (Sanya, Shenzhen), Taiwan (Kaohsiung, Penghu), Singapore, Thailand (Pattaya, Phuket), Malaysia (Port Dickson) and Indonesia (Jakarta, Bali).

SANLORENZO, BLUEGAME TEAM UP

Far from a household name in Asia before 2015, Sanlorenzo has arguably been the brand success story of the region’s luxury yacht market in recent years, with Hong Kong as its red-hot core.

Sanlorenzo’s notable recent design innovations include the SL line’s Asymmetric models, the SX range’s large aft platform and enclosed flybridge, the three-level master suite on the 44.5m Alloy, the 500Exp’s stern helipad, the 52Steel’s ‘floating garage’, the open aft deck of the upcoming 44m X-Space and much more.

Simpson Marine, which represents the Italian builder as Sanlorenzo Asia, has sold almost every available model (plus many discontinued models) in the three fibreglass ranges: the SL planing line (78-120A), SD semi-displacement range (96-126) and the SX crossover series (76-112). For plenty of the models, the dealer has sold multiple hulls.

Even among Sanlorenzo’s mighty Superyacht collection of alloy and steel builds, Simpson Marine has sold two units of the Alloy (44.5m), a 500Exp (47m), a 46Steel, plus a 52Steel to Southeast Asia, the latter announced this summer.

Simpson Marine sold a 52Steel in Southeast Asia

Richard Allen, Simpson Marine’s Group General Manager, said: “These two record years are a culmination of the six years since Simpson Marine took on Sanlorenzo. We have invested heavily in making Sanlorenzo the number one luxury brand in Asia. Record sales in Asia accounted for over 23 per cent of Sanlorenzo’s global sales in 2020 and this trend is continuing in 2021.

“When you add in Fairline, Bluegame and Aquila along with our long-standing distribution of Beneteau and Lagoon, Simpson Marine represents the market leaders in many of the yachting sectors. The company is also a trusted outlet for pre-owned yacht sales and has a strong service team, while the Simpson Yacht Charter and Yacht Management divisions are growing throughout the region.”

The growing number of Sanlorenzo yachts sold into Asia is mirrored by the growth of the company’s Yacht Management division, which now handles over 40 yachts. As the fleet under management in Hong Kong grew, so did demand for management elsewhere, with Simpson Marine now offering the service in its southern China hubs of Sanya and Shenzhen, as well as Singapore, Bali and Jakarta.

Simpson Marine’s connection to Sanlorenzo strengthened last year when it took on Asia representation of Bluegame. Acquired by Sanlorenzo in 2018, Bluegame effectively continues the SX’s aft platform design in smaller models.

Demand has rapidly risen this year and the company’s sales have included three BGX70s, a unit of the newer BGX60, and a BG62 and two BG42s from the Open range. At this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, Bluegame premiered the brand-new BG72, which is effectively an Open version of the BGX70, built on the same platform.

BENETEAU, LAGOON COMMUNITIES

In contrast, Simpson Marine has sold several hundred units each of the Beneteau and Lagoon brands across the decades. Beneteau and Lagoon are established world leaders in the production of sailing monohulls and sailing catamarans respectively, and Simpson Marine has ensured they lead their respective sectors in Asia, although both face increasing competition.

The first Beneteau Cup Hong Kong attracted 21 yachts

Earlier this year, Simpson Marine sold a flagship Oceanis Yacht 62 into Hong Kong, where it will become the biggest of the brand’s 200-plus boats in the city. In July, the company collaborated with Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club to stage the local premieres of Beneteau’s next-two biggest sailing yachts, the Oceanis Yacht 54 launched in 2020 and the First Yacht 53 that premiered in 2019.

However, the brand’s biggest event in Asia this year was the first Beneteau Cup Hong, which was held across a sunny weekend in May and featured 21 entries including Mike Simpson on his Oceanis 46.1, with the trusted support of Allen among others.

Beneteau’s motorboats are also becoming more popular in Asia, from the smaller Flyer and Antares models to the sleek Gran Turismo sport cruisers and the longer-range Swift Trawler models, which inspired the brand-new flagship Grand Trawler 62, which will arrive in Hong Kong in early 2022.

Lagoon is Simpson Marine’s second-most successful brand, behind Sanlorenzo, and the dealer has sold an estimated 400 of the brand’s catamarans across Asia. Lagoon has a great history in Malaysia, big numbers in Hong Kong and Singapore, a strong fleet in Sanya and many in Thailand.

Its catamarans continue to sell consistently across the region, although the most exciting recent developments over the past five years have been the releases of the ‘Big Four’ – the Seventy 7 and Sixty 5 sailing cats, and Seventy 8 and Sixty 7 powercats.

Simpson Marine’s recent sales and deliveries include a Sixty 5 that arrived in Hong Kong late in the summer, a Sixty 7 powercat delivered to Taiwan in October and a Seventy 8 scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong in 2022.

Lagoon sailing cats make up much of Simpson Yacht Charter’s fleet in Thailand, where the company has also organised multiple editions of the Lagoon Escapade. The group’s charter business has been typically anchored in Phuket, where the drop in tourism following Covid forced the company to tailor new types of packages and target more residents and locals.

Charter business is also growing in Pattaya and the Gulf of Thailand but most notably in Hong Kong, where the increased demand to hire yachts has paralleled the desire to buy.

Reanna Wang, Manager of Simpson Yacht Charter, says: “In Thailand, we have an experienced team who have created new day and weekend packages for more local audiences and opened a base in Pattaya, which we think has a lot of potential.

“In Hong Kong, our fleet of CA (central agency) yachts started to grow right before Covid, enabling us to capture the growth of luxury yacht charters here. We’ve also collaborated with luxury hotels, concierge companies and other local charter agents, so our packages include hotel room nights, helicopter rides, ‘happy hour’ prices around the harbour on weekdays and more.”

MORE TO COME FROM AQUILA, FAIRLINE

Simpson Marine moved into a new sector in early 2018 when it took on Aquila, which was producing its best-selling Aquila 44 Yacht and 36 Sport, each model going on to sell well over 100 units globally.

An Aquila 36 Sport in Hong Kong

A 2012 collaboration between US-based MarineMax and Sino Eagle, the brand initially started with a US focus but has become increasingly global in the past three years, reflected by the appointment of Simpson Marine and other dealers around the world.

Aside from the Aquila 36 taking considerable market share among 30-40ft powerboat sales in the US, the brand has gained global attention with this year’s releases of its 54 Yacht and 70 Luxury models, which both exhibited at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October. Simpson Marine has sold a 54 Yacht scheduled to arrive in Thailand in the first half of 2022.

Allen said: “The decision to take on Aquila has paid off as the brand has grown quickly, now producing powercats from 28ft-70ft. The quality is very good, the clients love the handling, unique features and space onboard, and we continue to see sales increase, especially in Southeast Asia. With some great long-term plans, we expect Aquila to continue to grow throughout the region.”

Fairline is Simpson Marine’s newest yacht brand and one of the iconic British builders founded in England in the 1960s, although it’s based inland, in Oundle, unlike its south-coast contemporaries.

The first Fairline Squadron 50 in Hong Kong was quickly sold

The brand bounced back from going into administration in December 2015 by renewing its historic Squadron flybridge (50-68ft) and Targa cruiser (45-65ft) ranges with fresh designs by celebrated Italian designer Alberto Mancini.

In 2019, it released the F//Line 33 designed by Mancini, its smallest and fastest boat, with Simpson Marine bringing in Asia’s first unit last year. At the start of last year, Fairline extended Simpson Marine’s coverage from Hong Kong and the Philippines to also include Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia andMyanmar.

However, the onset of Covid has delayed the flow of Fairline yachts into key markets, so Allen expects the brand to grow significantly in Asia once more start arriving. A unit of the new flagship Squadron 68 Evoque with an enlarged master suite is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong early next year following the model’s premiere at Boot Dusseldorf in January.

“With many new models being introduced in 2022, 2023 and beyond, Fairline will grow in our region as we bring these new models to the market,” he says. “We are confident Fairline will become one of our leading brands within the next two to three years as it fits very nicely between our Beneteau motorboats and Sanlorenzo ranges in terms of size and price.”

Simpson Marine’s staff count keeps growing

With over 130 staff in 11 offices in seven territories across Greater China and Southeast Asia, Simpson Marine remains the clear leader among dealers in the region. However, the man who started it all has no intention of pulling back on the throttle.

“It was always our intention to look after our clients wherever they go cruising, so we’ve established service points in strategic cruising destinations,” Simpson says. “We had intended to open an office in the Philippines and in Vietnam in 2020, but for obvious reasons that was put on hold. When borders reopen, we will go ahead with that plan.”

Groupe Beneteau has unveiled its Seanapps technology, which allows owners to stay connected to a wide range of information about their yacht. Developed with Sentinel Marine Solutions, Seanapps features a telemetry box installed on boats that allows owners an easy way to oversee their management and maintenance needs through an app.

Owners can access and check the main functions of their boat such as fuel, water, battery and bilge levels, engine information and even interior humidity and temperature. Seanapps also tracks navigation data such as distance travelled and average and top speeds, while also providing information on the boat’s environment such as GPS position, wind and water depth.

From September 2022, Seanapps will be fitted on every new boat from Beneteau, Jeanneau and Prestige. The technology is currently available on selected Beneteau sailing yachts (First Yacht 53, Oceanis Yacht 54 and 62) and its Swift Trawler and Grand Trawler 62 motorboats, the Jeanneau Yachts (51, 54, 60, 65) sailing range and all Prestige motor yachts. A retrofit option is also available.

Gianguido Girotti, Deputy CEO of Group Beneteau, said: “Developed together with our partner Sentinel Marine Solutions, this on-board smart application enables boaters, dealers and charter companies to connect to their boat or fleet at any time. We are very excited to kick start this solution with a series of Beneteau, Jeanneau and Prestige models.

“By 2025, all 9,000 boats we build every year will be equipped with Seanapps as standard equipment. It illustrates well our philosophy and our business approach: we are the integrators of a solution developed by our partner, a solution that we deploy on a vast scale.”

Danny Minnick: A Serendipitous Artist Who Found A New Calling In Art

The journey of an artist takes up different forms but for Danny Minnick, it took an unexpected turn and now he revels in it.

The path towards becoming an artist varies from one individual to another. For the majority, it starts from an early age. Most would have had their first taste of making art through formal education such as art classes and that becomes the starting point for many. For Seattle-born artist Danny Minnick, drawing is second nature and he could easily sketch out his favourite cartoon characters when he was only in third grade.

However, an unfortunate event with a teacher in his younger days left Minnick feeling despaired and wronged. He was told to draw an image of his hand freestyle and because his artwork was perfectly drawn, his teacher asserted that he cheated. Minnick did not and the incident made him feel guilty, resulting in him drawing less over time. After the incident, he would still doodle but that passion he once had was no longer there.

Another of Minnick’s most fond experiences is skateboarding. With his natural aptitude for the urban sport, he competed professionally and enjoyed a successful career from it. On top of that, he was also acting as a stunt double. In 2010, he tore his Achilles tendon and the incident altered the course of his life. The injury meant Minnick could no longer partake in competitions and he shifted his focus to recovering.

Two years after his injury, fellow professional skateboarder Chad Muska introduced Minnick to his studio space and the concept of making art. Muska was already dabbling in contemporary art, similar to other skater-turned-artists such as Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton and others. Minnick spent most of his time at Muska’s art studio and that was when he renewed his fervour for painting.

He uses an array of art materials like oils, acrylics, oil sticks, Krinks, sharpies and spray paint to create his body of work. Eventually, he held his first show titled “17 pieces” and the rest is history. Minnick’s artworks can be described as a medley of colours, thick paint, highly pigmented, fragments, splinters, brush and splatter work.

Lazarus, Danny Minnick

Oftentimes, art connoisseurs and collectors would mention Keith Haring, Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat when commenting on his art. Minnick tells us he is humbled to be compared with these artists who are widely celebrated in the contemporary art scene.

“I strive to shine the shoes of such titans,” he says. “They have without doubt influenced and inspired me in everything that I do. If I can come close to such legends then that will be a special day.”

A quick search online for Minnick’s artworks online and one will see the resemblance to these big names — bold brushstrokes of Willem de Kooning, cartoon figures of Keith Haring and the graffiti-style painting of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The medium of which Minnick’s art is conceived is through large-scale canvasses. Using that allows him to create pieces on a grander scale that can have a formidable presence and bold, visceral impact.

Icarus Bone, Danny Minnick
Icarus Bone

Minnick adopts “abstract expressionism” as his art style. This artistic movement developed and flourished in the 1940s and 1950s. Characterised by the gestural brushstrokes and an impression of spontaneity, these qualities set the ground for a clever cast of characters and hidden images that appear in the artworks of Minnick.

A common motif that is seen throughout Minnick’s works is the trademark stick-like figures, often with a “+” symbol around the pelvis area. Along with that, the colours he chose are also vibrant. Perhaps it is his multi-hyphenate professions, he approaches his works with little ego and a childlike sense of wonder and curiosity. The whimsical nature of Minnick comes through quite effortlessly and one can feel and see it in the work.

My Inner Child’s Real Singapore

When asked what emotions he hopes the viewers experience when looking at his art, Minnick says, “I would like to think they get an intense feeling of pleasure and hope.” The process to which he goes about creating is atypical — it is as though he works backwards and almost like using reverse psychology. It could be interpreted as he already has a message he wants to convey and his works are an extension of his thoughts.

Danny Minnick painting

For other artists, the interpretation of their artworks is up to the viewers. They are free to unriddle what they see in front of them. More than that, Minnick’s ability to hone in on an emotion, stranded in an active moment of time, is what really stands out in his pieces. This unique proposition makes him a highly-sought artist for collaboration and to collect.

On the topic of collaboration, one would be remiss for not mentioning his close relationship with street art legend Al Diaz. The prolific graffiti artist is not only a school friend and close companion of Basquiat, but also the first to bring graffiti tags of New York under the name SAMO in 1977 to life.

Minnick’s partnership with Dias has had an influence on him. Al Diaz became a close friend and confidant of Minnick. “His first hand experiences of the 80’s New York street art scene and close relationship with Jean-Michel Basquiat make our collaborative work something special and unique.”

What A Year
What A Year

Counting personalities such as Nick Cassavetes, Michael Citrone, Gus Van Sant, LeBron James, Jamie Hince, Cash Warren and lately Jessica Alba as his collectors, Minnick attributes his success to a “mixture of karma, fate and a lot of hard work”. He’s also thankful for the fantastic support he had received from Lionel Ritchie and BDXChange.

Making his first foray into Asia, Minnick is thrilled to be working with the Singapore-based art gallery and boutique advisory firm, Art Works. “I have nothing but love and respect for a gallery with the integrity of Art Works. They have been great to work with and really supportive in developing my following in Asia.”

Demand for art pieces in Asia has seen a growing trend as the population accumulate more wealth and this leads to the embourgeoisement of society. Economic factors become less prominent and self-expression of post-material values takes precedence. Artworks are an avenue for people to explore this new venture — and also as a form of alternative investment.

Come next year, it will be an exciting time for Minnick as he is continuing his collaboration with BDXChang. Though he does not divulge much about this exciting project, he did ask us to “watch this space”. And sure we will!

Emblazoned by the acclaimed artist’s signature polka dots and flowers, this bubbly makes a great party enhancer.

The Veuve Clicquot x Yayoi Kusama collection is the perfect bottle of champagne to bid au dieu to 2021 and welcome the new year with new hope and optimism. The new creation is also a celebration of the Maison’s new vintage, La Grande Dame 2012.

The La Grande Dame 2012 is a tribute to Madame Clicquot and to the creative and elegant souls who have followed in her footsteps. Fitting this description is Kusama, an artist known for her immersive artistic experiences such as the “Infinity Room”.

Reimagined in the Japanese artist’s signature flowers in vibrant colours and polka dots, the prestige cuvée is made entirely with Pinot Noir, with just 10 per cent Chardonnay added to the mix. Interestingly, the polka dots represent champagne bubbles one might see. Likewise, encasing the bubbly is a gift box emblazoned with more psychedelic dots and a vibrantly hued flower — which itself is a great collector’s item.

The grapes used to create the La Grande Dame are of the highest quality and only specific types are used. As working with Pinot Noir demands great attention to detail due to the fragility of the grapes, the finest expertise from the Cellar Master and winemaking team are employed to ensure its consistency meets that of Veuve Clicquot’s hallmark style.

“La Grande Dame 2012, with its versatile composition driven by Veuve Clicquot’s extraordinary savoir-faire, is not only a delight today, but also a promise of celebration for years to come.”

This is not the first time the Maison and Kusama had worked together. Back in 2006, the acclaimed artist had given a new life to an original portrait of Madame Clicquot with her iconic polka dots pattern during a charity auction in Tokyo.

Though the Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2012 by Yayoi Kusama tastes great on its own, the champagne makes a great pairing with vegetables and quail, skate wing or sea urchin. With the festive season slowly warming up, having a bottle definitely livens the atmosphere.

Breitling introduces five exciting watches sure to appeal to aviation enthusiasts and lovers of pilot’s watches.

Breitling Super AVI collection

The Breitling Super AVI is a new aviation-themed collection of watches from a firm that is probably best-known for its proper pilot’s watches and its aviation themed timepieces too. Yes, those are not the same thing, but that is a subject for another occasion. Where some brands are virtually synonymous with diving, the military or motor racing, Breitling has established air superiority, literally. That is true even in the contemporary brand, which has undergone plenty of changes in recent years.

The Breitling Super AVI lands with five new references, all chronographs with GMT. These are inspired by just one watch, the original 1953 “Co-Pilot” Ref. 765 AVI aviator’s watch, and four planes: the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, the Vought F4U Corsair, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the de Havilland Mosquito. This is as hardcore as Breitling has gotten in recent memory about aviation-themed watches.

This is not to suggest that Breitling has been quiet. The watchmaker regularly boosts the conversation about its timepieces, whether it is a cool video with CEO Georges Kern travelling through time to meet the key Breitling family members, or an extensive behind the scenes commentary on a new advertising campaign. Some commentators, WatchPro for one, have wondered aloud if Breitling had forgotten its core audience of aviation-loving watch enthusiasts and collectors. Regardless of where you stand on that, you will probably agree that the Breitling Super AVI will satisfy this group; we certainly think so!

To get into the watches briefly to start, they are all 46mm chronographs with GMT central hands, and the movement is the automatic B04, as you might have guessed if you are a chronograph or Breitling aficionado. You might also recall a reissue of Ref. 765 in 2020 that shared the same characteristics. Apparently demand is so strong for that piece that Breitling responded immediately with these five references. Well, immediately is quite relative in watchmaking, but Breitling has done exceptionally well to deliver a full set of well-thought through and executed models here.

There are actually four proper models, with the Super AVI P-51 Mustang version boasting two options. As the name suggests, this watch is a tribute to what is arguably the best all-around fighter plane of its day. This model is available in stainless steel with a black dial and brown leather strap, and red gold with anthracite dial and a black leather strap.

Breitling Super AVI P-51 Mustang

For more tone on tone fun, the Super AVI Tribute to Vought F4U Corsair goes with a blue dial and chronograph counters. This is paired with a black leather strap; the colour scheme matches the livery of its namesake naval aircraft.

Breitling Super AVI Tribute to Vought F4U Corsair

The Super AVI Mosquito introduces mixed materials with a combination of polished steel and satin-brushed black ceramic bezel insert — it is the only one of the four models with such a bezel insert. In this model, contrast leads the way, with a black dial framing white chronograph counters. Breitling says the red and orange elements recall the roundels and markings on the plane, dubbed the “Wooden Wonder”. We shall have to see this in person, but the effect on the Super AVI is very fetching indeed, even if we have only seen publicity images.

Breitling Super AVI Mosquito

The Super AVI Curtiss Warhawk also echoes these contrasting tones, but eschews the bezel insert. It is very much like the other three models in going with a pure steel bidirectional ratcheted bezel. Here the dial is military green and the chronograph counters are in white, with similar red markings on the Mosquito. The effect is also charming, but once again we must refrain from a final judgment till we see the watches in person.

We close with the words of Kern himself. “This collection embodies that sense of nostalgia for the early days of aviation when pilots relied on their watches as onboard tools. But you don’t have to be a pilot off vintage-aircraft buff to appreciate exceptional craftsmanship and rugged design.”

Fairline Yachts has appointed Paul Grys as its new Chief Executive Officer, while Derek Carter has re-joined the British motor yacht builder as Chairman.

Grys’ career includes 19 years with Jaguar followed by 17 years at JCB, where he was Managing Director of several business units, before spending three years as Group Business Operations Director.

He led and developed complex manufacturing businesses, a skillset that will drive the next stage of Fairline’s growth as he succeeds Peter McNulty, who took on the CEO role on an interim basis over two years ago and oversaw the acquisition by Hanover Investors in June 2021.

“It is a really exciting time to be leading this very special company,” Grys said. “The pandemic has led to a surge in demand in the luxury yacht market and Fairline is in a great position to benefit from this. With our heritage, our passionate workforce and exciting product range, we will create a strategy to seize a greater share of this market globally.”

Carter was CEO of Fairline Yachts for 15 years to 2011 before becoming CEO of Portakabin and subsequently its parent company, The Shepherd Building Group. He will commence his new role as Chairman of Fairline in January 2022.

Jason Carley, a Senior Partner at Hanover Investors, said: “In Paul, we have a proven leader in operationally complex businesses as we focus on optimising the Fairline factory to drive even higher levels of quality and efficiency to support the exciting new model range being introduced over the coming years.

“And we are privileged that someone with Derek’s reputation in the industry is returning to the Fairline family as Chairman, working with Paul and the entire workforce to build on the strong foundations we have.”

Founded in Oundle in 1967, Fairline has a global network of more than 50 dealers and is represented in multiple Asian markets by Simpson Marine.
