Wally hails maxi racing’s Med return

Wally hails maxi racing’s Med return

Wally owners and officials were delighted with return of maxi racing to Portofino: “We expect an exciting rebound in regattas as those who love to sail return to the water.”

The 24m Ryokan 2 rounds the Portofino lighthouse

Wally management spoke out in praise of the return of maxi yacht racing in the Mediterranean following last week’s Regate di Primavera – Splendido Mare Cup in the Gulf of Tigullio. Two Wally yachts, Kauris II (24.3m) and Ryokan 2 (24m) were among a competitive fleet in the invitation-only event.

Stefano de Vivo, Managing Director of Wally, said: “For us as a brand, it is key to support regattas such as the Regate di Primavera – Splendido Mare Cup and foster growth for the future. We fully expect to see an exciting rebound in regattas as those who love to sail return to the water.

The 24.3m Kauris II was the other Wally in action

“Now more than ever, people are appreciating the value of owning a yacht. Having delivered a new 145-footer at the height of the pandemic and recently signed a contract to build a stunning 101-footer for a loyal client, I am delighted to say that the Wally family keeps getting bigger.”

Luca Bassani, founder of Wally, said: “Seas ran quite high at times, while the wind went from flat calm to gusty and back again, which made for some classic racing and some memorable moments. The two Wallys were never far off the pace and provided an unforgettable spectacle by finishing close under the lighthouse at Portofino.”

The regatta welcomed a new season of maxi racing

Both the 43wallytender and 48wallytender served as courtesy vessels to transport VIPs in style at the Regate di Primavera – Splendido Mare Cup, which has been running almost non-stop since 1980, although last year’s edition wasn’t held due to the pandemic.

Wally is also helping bring the maxis back this year with the return of the Wally Class, which features yachts from 24m to over 50m and includes some of the most iconic sailing yachts of the last four decades.

Portofino was as pretty at night as it was in the day

Upcoming Wally Class events include Loro Piana Super Yacht Regatta in Porto Cervo (June 1-5), Rolex Giraglia (June 16-19), The Superyacht Cup Palma in Mallorca (June 23-26), Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo (September 5-11) and Les Voiles de St Tropez (October 4-9).

Bassani, also President of Wally Class, added: “After a year without Maxi yacht racing, owners are understandably enthusiastic to relaunch the Med regatta circuit. Wally is delighted to be supporting Wally owners and Wally Class members this summer to participate in some of the world’s most prestigious events.”

Scheduled for 2024, the third unit of the 60m Limited Editions model will feature an interior by Winch Design.

As well as a Tim Heywood exterior, the third Amels 200 will have a Winch Design interior

Amels and Damen Yachting have announced the sale of the third Amels 200, which is scheduled for delivery in early 2024. Rob Luijendijk, Amels and Damen Yachting Sales Director, worked with the owner during the sale of the 1,015GT superyacht.

“We are both proud and excited to be building this new 60m Amels 200 for our client,” Luijendijk said. “This is a yacht which combines original design and high volume with exceptional functionality to really provide the ultimate luxury yachting experience. We very much look forward to embarking on the build journey with them.”

An evolution of the Amels 188, the 197-footer also features an exterior by Tim Heywood and shares much of her predecessor’s naval architecture, high volume and hybrid electrical power technology.

Second Amels 200 launched

Amels and Damen Yachting announced the sale of the second Amels 200 following its ‘RoFlo’ launch – the shipyard’s second of the year.

Earlier this year, Amels and Damen Yachting launched the first two Amels 200 superyachts, which will be delivered to their owners in the coming months. Like the first two hulls, the third Amels 200 also features a four-deck elevator, air-conditioned gym on the sun deck and full-height windows in the owner’s suite. It will have accommodation for 12 guests and 12 crew plus captain.

For the interiors, the client has selected Winch Design, which is working on its first Amels 200 having worked on many other Amels Limited Editions ranges.

Jim Dixon, Director, Yachts & Aviation at Winch Design, said: “The sale of this third hull in Amels’ 200 range marks yet another collaboration between Damen Yachting and Winch Design, and follows a brilliant team effort by all those involved so far. It is a rare but special privilege to have worked on so many projects over the years with such an esteemed yard and we look forward to bringing our collective experience together again for this latest 60m yacht.”

The regional company is already busy in its new role as the city’s dealer for Lift Foils.

Asiamarine is bringing in five more units for sale in Singapore

Asiamarine has already had to stock up since becoming the official dealer in Singapore for Lift, producer of the eFoil hydrofoil surfboards that are increasingly popular in parts of Asia. Lift was founded in Puerto Rico in 2010 and is best known for creating the eFoil, an electric hydrofoil surfboard now in its third generation and marketed as ‘the world’s smallest personal watercraft’.

Asiamarine has already sold three units of the second-generation Lift2 eFoil and has one as a demo unit available for sea trials. The dealer has since ordered five stock units of the new Lift3, scheduled to arrive in late June.

The Lift eFoil has become one of Asia’s favourite water toys

“We are delighted to be the exclusive dealer for Lift Foil in Singapore,” said Winnie Ng, Sales Broker of Asiamarine Singapore. “Following our long relationship with the manufacturer, this strengthens our partnership, which is also important to our clients. We’re now well positioned with our product portfolio and service to provide the ultimate watersport experience.”

Lift co-founder Nick Leason – an engineer and avid surfer – developed the original eFoil, applying the technology from smart phones, electric vehicles and drones into a board that lets its rider glide above water without needing to be propelled by wind or waves.

The most recent model allows for up to 2hrs of riding

Controlled by a wireless Bluetooth hand remote, the eFoil uses an advanced lithium-ion battery to power a silent electric motor that’s mounted on an all-carbon-fibre hydrofoil, emitting no emissions or noise. The Lift2 offers speeds of up to 25mph and lasts for over 60 minutes on a two-hour charge, while the Lift3 can reach up to 30mph and allows for up to 120 minutes of riding.

Asiamarine has sold the fourth Solaris sailing yacht in Hong Kong.

The Solaris 44 for Hong Kong will arrive in November

Asiamarine, the regional dealer headquartered in Hong Kong, has announced the recent sale of a new Solaris 44, Black Pearl, a collaboration with Italy’s Solaris Yachts. The Solaris 44 is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong in November.

The 44-footer is designed for easy sailing

The 13.35m sailing yacht is designed for fast cruising with a reduced crew, due to all lines being led to just two winches within easy reach of the helmsman. The mainsail traveller is totally recessed, while winches on the coaming deploy the asymmetrical spinnaker. The boat can also be used for relaxed cruising and competitive racing.

The Solaris 44 has a beam of almost 14ft

The deck includes a roomy sail locker, large cockpit lockers and an independent storage space for the liferaft. The widest part of the hull extends aft, with twin rudder blades aiding efficiency at any angle of heel. She is equipped with furling boom, electric winches, self-tacking jib, furling Code65 and G2.

The yacht has a roomy interior with two guest cabins aft and owner’s in the bow

Below deck, the beam of 4.18m (13ft 9in) allows for two double guest cabins aft, while forward are a galley to port and day head to starboard, full-beam saloon and the owner’s cabin with ensuite bathroom in the bow.

The new entry in the Italian builder’s Generation X range will be powered by a pair of 1,550mhp MAN V12s.

The Pershing 6X will be the newest model in the imposing Generation X range

Pershing has unveiled details of its upcoming 6X, which is expected to have a top speed of 48 knots and a cruising speed of 42 with a pair of 1,550mhp MAN V12 engines, living up to the performance standards embodied by the rest of the Italian builder’s Generation X range.

Joining the 5X, 7X, 8X and 9X, the 6X is the range’s second-smallest model and has an overall length of 18.94m (62 ft) and a beam of 4.8m (16ft). The model is designed by the studio headed by Fulvio De Simoni, Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Group’s Engineering Department.

Like her sister models, the Pershing 6X will have an aerodynamic profile

Like the other Generation X models, Pershing 6X has a sleek, streamlined appearance and features large, glazed surfaces in the hull that ensure plenty of natural light on the lower deck. New features include the styling of the big aft sunpad, the carbon and teak table in the cockpit, the chaise longue with reclining backrest positioned forward, and rectangular portholes that look like windows.

One of the standout zones is the helm station, which includes a dashboard with two 19-inch monitors, carbon-fibre control panels and an electro-hydraulic steering system, all set under a large, opening sunroof. Also available is an innovative joystick coupled to the surface drive with various operating modes including ‘easy handling’ for manoeuvrability in ports and confined waters.

The 6X will feature a newly designed foredeck

The first unit has three cabins – owner, forward VIP and starboard guest – and three bathrooms with separate shower. The guest bathroom, which can be entered both from the cabin and the lobby on the mezzanine, also acts as the day head.

On the left side of the hull is the galley, positioned to benefit from various sources of natural light, including a ceiling window. The version for the American market has two cabins – owner and VIP – with a living space replacing the guest cabin. Both versions have a crew cabin accessible from the cockpit, with a single bed and integrated bathroom.

The styling of the large aft sunpad is another new feature

The materials used for the interiors include plain and lacquered wood for the furniture, parquet floors, Mastrotto and Poltrona Frau leathers, and mirrored panels in the owner’s cabin. The lighting system features new horizontal LED bars in the ceiling that match the decor based on alternating smooth and undulatedsurfaces.

The Dutch shipyard set the 255ft, 2,850GT custom build afloat in the presence of her designers and the owner’s team.

The 2,850GT yacht will be the largest Amels superyacht to date in terms of volume on delivery

During a private event held at the Amels and Damen Yachting Vlissingen City shipyard, the Amels 78m Full Custom superyacht reached a major milestone as she touched water for the first time since arriving at the yard in January last year.

In the presence of the owner’s team and the designers involved in the project, as well as the Amels and Damen Yachting team, the pumps to the dry dock were started. As the water flowed into the dock, the keel was submerged, floating the 255-footer up off her dry dock.

Water starts flowing from the pumps into the dock to set the yacht afloat

Andrew Tree of Superyacht Technical Services, has been overseeing the build process on behalf of the owner, said: “Seeing the project take to the water for the first time since she arrived here in Vlissingen is a huge milestone. This is a day all those involved in the build can be incredibly proud of and is the result of great collaboration and teamwork.”

Witnessing this milestone event were both the yacht’s exterior and interior designers. Espen Øino and his team were appointed by the owner to develop the exterior design and general arrangement, while Zuretti Interior Designers are behind the custom interiors.

François Zuretti, Andrew Tree, Espen Øino, Rose Damen, Jeremy Staddon and Daan Langezaal

Øino said: “It’s definitely a unique project. The large, open top deck, large aft pool and very wide side decks that can be utilised as private guest balconies are features which come together to make this design very special.”

The 78m yacht has accommodation for 14 guests and 26 crew plus captain. With a gross tonnage of 2,850, the Amels 78m Full Custom will be the largest Amels superyacht to date in terms of volume on delivery. She’s scheduled to be handed over in 2022.

The 255-footer is set for delivery in 2022

Daan Langezaal, Amels and Damen Yachting Project Manager, said: “When we started the pumps and she floated for the first time here in Vlissingen, it really was a moment of great pride. As a Full Custom, this is a yacht that is very different to the last 40 that we have delivered in terms of design, engineering and project requirements.

“The success of the project so far comes down to the collaboration we have with the owner’s team, with us all working to the same goal – to create something magnificent for a happy client. This latest milestone was a major one and I am very much looking forward the next.”

Sustainability: Catamaran builders – Bali

Already benefiting from Catana’s history in performance-focused efficiency, Bali models are stepping into the future with a bio-membrane generator that filters grey and black water.

Bali has earned a reputation for innovation since the brand was founded in 2014

Bali has quickly risen to be among the world’s leading builders of cruising catamarans since launching its first models in 2014 as an offshoot of the Catana Group, which by then had a 30-year history of building performance-focused sailing cats. Today, Bali offers seven sailing models from 40-54ft and now two motor yachts, the first only unveiled internationally in January 2020.

Olivier Poncin, CEO of Catana Group, emphasises that one of Bali’s most underrated strengths is the performance and efficiency of its catamarans, due to hull design and build materials benefiting from Catana’s history. He also says sustainability is growing in importance for both catamaran builders and owners, and that his company’s new bio-membrane generator takes pride of place among its latest innovations.

“I believe progress in naval architecture on one hand and the awareness of ecological needs on the other will lead to important evolutions in the catamaran market. Bali catamarans will become even more comfortable, gain in performance and above all, will be much more environmentally friendly,” Poncin says.

Bali is implementing a submerged membrane bio-reactor on its models

“We are now a pioneer in this field as all our Catana and Bali catamarans will be equipped with a bio-membrane generator that will filter 100 per cent of the grey and black water on board our boats, so more polluting discharge. This is a major step forward.”

Every Bali boat will benefit from not one but two major new features, both designed to be environmentally friendly and improve comfort and safety on board.

Firstly, a special tap-fitted filtration system produces safe drinking water by purifying water from the tank. Originating from medical technology associated with food-grade active carbon filtration, the advanced endotoxin filter removes all bacteria, viruses, particles and macromolecules. It also filters out all organic molecules and chlorine, treats odours, yet conserves minerals.

“Gone are the all the constraints associated with bottles of mineral water that have to be bought, transported, taken aboard, stored somewhere, first full then empty, and finally disposed of,” Poncin says.

The bioreactor sterilises all waste water on board and discharges totally depolluted water

Secondly, every new catamaran is equipped with a remote submerged membrane bioreactor (BAMID), which sterilises all the waste water on board by both bacterial degradation and ultra filtration. This double process allows the discharge of totally depolluted and sterile water.

Operating silently and automatically, the system discharges completely depolluted water into the sea, compatible with MARPOL certification. The system removes the need for holding tanks and the associated constraints of emptying, maintenance and periodic cleaning.

“Everyone knows holding tanks are often full in the wrong places or at the wrong time. Now, there’s also no more risk of bad smells – or unfortunate encounters when swimming around your boat,” Poncin smiles.

“Instead, there’s the satisfaction of not polluting the surrounding waters or marine wildlife, and of accessing areas of high ecological pressure such as nature reserves and parks with the utmost respect for the environment.”

The Polish luxury catamaran builder has revealed images of its in-house solar panels, which will first feature on the Sunreef 80 Eco and 80 Sunreef Power Eco this summer.

The Sunreef 80 Eco will be the first sailing cat from the Eco range

The Sunreef Yachts Eco R&D team has revealed photos of the company’s in-house solar power system, which uses ultra-thin, shock resistant and highly-efficient solar cells, and is the first use of composite-integrated photovoltaic technology in the industry, according to the Polish shipyard.

Sunreef’s solar panels weigh less than 1.8kg/sqm and can fit on curved surfaces

The shipyard’s solar power system is currently being integrated on both power and sail catamarans within the Sunreef Eco range of luxury catamarans. The first units will be the Sunreef 80 Eco and the 80 Sunreef Power Eco, both to be launched this summer.

Francis Lapp founded Sunreef in Gdansk in 2002

Francis Lapp, founder and President of Sunreef, said: “We reinvented solar panels for yachts. Our team has challenged the status quo in marine photovoltaic technology, making solar panels an integral part of the Sunreef Yachts Eco design. This is something unique in the yachting world.

The solar panels use composite-integrated photovoltaic technology

The solar panels are entirely flush with all curved composite structures including masts, hull sides and biminis, with the integration technique giving the panels a high resistance to shock and abrasion. Weighing less than 1.8kg/sqm, the system is reputed to the lightest marine photovoltaic solution and uses cells delivering a peak performance of 24 percent.

In its bimonthly contribution to Yacht Style, Fraser says the global market’s record-breaking superyacht sales show how the real rewards of yachting have been highlighted during the pandemic.

© Fraser Market Intelligence

Fraser’s Market Intelligence department has provided Yacht Style with data showing that global sales of pre-owned superyachts in the first quarter of 2021 have smashed Q1 records since data was compiled from 2011. The total of 184 sales of pre-owned superyachts (24m-plus) easily surpassed the previous record of 123 in 2018.

© Fraser Market Intelligence

Exactly half of the first-quarter sales were in the 24-30m segment, more than doubling the equivalent sales in 2019 (37) and 2020 (36). The 58 first-quarter sales in the 30-40m segment were more than double the 2019 figure (28) and over 75 per cent higher than last year (33).

Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser, told Yacht Style: “There is a definite sense that those who may have been putting off a potential yacht purchase until ‘another day’ are realising that day is now. With over 20 per cent of buyers now purchasing for the first time and many others deciding to take advantage of a wide range of market offers, yachting really has come into a time of its own.

© Fraser Market Intelligence

“The search for an escape that brings freedom, privacy, a controlled environment and the luxury of quality time spent with family and friends is leading more people to yachting. And that demand is replicated within the charter market, as increased vaccinations and more countries re-opening now clear the way for what is set to be a very busy and gratefully rewarding summer.”

The French builder is developing a ‘New 51’ sailing cat with a fully integrated solar-power system, an illustration of what the yard promises will be a new sustainability-focused offering.

This Isla 40 launched in 2020 features solar power on the aft coachroof

Fountaine Pajot has a history of offering eco-friendly solutions on its catamarans, which include the option of installing solar panels across the hardtop or on the aft end of the flybridge. Solar panels are an option on the French yard’s full range, which includes seven sailing catamarans from the new Isla 40 to the stunning Alegria 67, which made its Asian premiere at the Singapore Yacht Show in 2019.

The motor yacht range comprises the MY4.S launching later this year, the renamed MY5 and MY6 (formerly MY40 and MY44), and the Power 67, which was delivered to its owner in Greece last year and is the motor yacht version of the Alegria.

The Samana 59 also shows Fountaine Pajot’s existing solar power options

However, now in its 45th year since being founded in 1976, Fountaine Pajot has revealed that it’s on the cusp of announcing wholesale changes to its approach to sustainability that will fundamentally change its offerings and steer the brand into a new generation.

Romain Motteau, Deputy CEO of Fountaine Pajot Group, said: “This is going to be super exciting. This global vision will include new solutions that we will implement such as solar power and charging solutions, hybrid engines and even hydrogen in the future. We want to be a leader in sustainability and focus on innovation. We will make more announcements about this journey later in the year and we want the whole industry to join us.”

The New 51 scheduled for 2022 will be the brand’s first model to offer a solar system fully integrated into the hardtop

One of the brand’s first steps on this new journey is the New 51, a model designed to succeed the Saba 50, which sold a remarkable 200 units. Instead of offering solar panels as an option to be added on flat surfaces, the 51 will have the option of solar panels fully integrated into the hardtop – marking a first for the brand – and which will work in tandem with lithium batteries.

The 51’s optional solar-power system will produce 2,200W of power, far more than on any previous Fountaine Pajot models of a similar size, which usually produce about 500-600W, according to Motteau. The first unit of the 51 is expected to launch in February 2022, with delivery in April.

The model is first expected to be on public display next year at the International Multihull Boat Show at La Grande Motte in southern France followed by the autumn shows in Cannes, Genoa and Barcelona, and Annapolis in the US. “The 51 is the first step in our new vision,” Motteau says. “The model is really showing the trend of the future Fountaine Pajot boats.”
