The Red Carpet

Yvette King and Mond Gutierrez

The theme of this year’s Asian Academy Creative Awards was “1920s Glam” and the stars relished the chance to grace the red carpet within Singapore’s historic Chijmes Hall. Yvette King and Mond Gutierrez hosted the red carpet wearing the designs of Filipino fashion designer Anthony Ramirez. Heart Media’s own Asri Jasman and Izwan Abdullah — of Esquire Singapore and Men’s Folio respectively — were joined by two time best dressed winner Hirzi Zulkiflie as judges for the sought after “Fashion Industry Best Dressed Award”.

Manila & Rajshri

Manila Luzon and Susan Lankester unanimously won the award, each with a different take on the theme. Manila wore an art deco beaded gown by Ushi Sato while Malaysian actress Susan Lankester donned a piece closer to home in her mother’s Nyonya Kebaya, pairing it with clay and acrylic earrings by Bremen Wong for an added touch of modernity. Moments earlier Manila Luzon had picked up a coveted golden Goddess statuette for Best Entertainment Host but jokingly said, “…for a drag queen, winning best dressed might be even better”.

Susan Lankester

The red carpet was truly a display of sartorial culture and heritage. Thailand-based actress Ase Wang was described as “ravishing in red” in a body-hugging dress by Thai designer Poem Couture. India’s Rajshri Deshpande would claim the statuette for “Best Actress In A Leading Role” for Trial By Fire but graced the red carpet in a vibrant magenta ensemble that was a modern take on the saree. Malaysian actress Siti Saleha wore a classic black and silver gown by Ivan Young with a Jimmy Choo clutch. Fellow Malaysian actress and host Sarimah Hibrahim also went for a black and silver full-length gown by Rizman Rujaini, which later jokingly described it as “chain mail diamonds, Game of Thrones mixed with the 20’s”.

Siti Saleha

Crazy Rich Asians star Tan Kheng Hua marked her return to the Asian Academy Creative Awards in a stunning white dress. With an eye on sustainability, the actress chose to accessorise her look with pieces made from recycled plastics an a black clutch that was made of compressed garbage bags. Thai star “Tu” Tontawan Tantivejakul jetted in from Bangkok and made a dash to the red carpet looking effortless in a bespoke black dress with a matching black cape and accessories by Christian Dior. Tu was voted Best Dressed by fans on Facebook.

The Awards & Winners

Malaysia’s Azira Shafinaz wins Best Actor/Actress in a Comedy Role for Ijab Kabut

Asia-Pac’s most prestigious awards for creative excellence did not disappoint. India won both the major acting categories with Vijay Varma winning “Best Actor in a Leading Role” for Dahaad while Rajshri Deshpande took home the award for “Best Actress in a Leading Role” for her performance in Netflix’s Trial By Fire. Korea dominated in the television categories winning, “Best Drama Series” for The Glory and “Best Non Scripted Entertainment” for Netflix’s Physical: 100.

Japan wins Best News/Current Affairs Programme or Series for Women on the Front Line: 15% of Japan’s Politicians

Other winners of the night included Japan’s Tomoki Kanazawa winning “Best Screenplay” for Sanctuary, Sinagpore’s Last Madame: Sisters of the Night for “Best Original Programme by a Streamer/OTT”, Thailand’s Hunger for Best Feature Film and Hong Kong’s Unchained Medley for Best Comedy Programme. However, arguably the most surprising yet culturally timely award went to Myanmar’s Militia is fighting back against Myanmar military government with makeshift weapons CNN for “Best Single News Story/Report”.

SUTL Enterprise has announced that it’s currently developing ONE°15 Marina Panwa Phuket in collaboration with the Numchai Group, which owns Numchai Ocean Transport Company and is supported by the Ministry of Industry (Thailand).

SUTL Enterprise is the owner and developer of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, which opened in 2007 and hosts the ICOMIA Boating Industry Conference, YACHT STYLE Awards and Singapore Yachting Festival later this month.

Last year, SUTL Enterprise launched ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island – situated in Indonesia but just 8nm south of Singapore – and said it expects the upcoming ONE°15 Marina Panwa Phuket to be welcoming yachts up to 120ft by the fourth quarter of this year.

The marina is in Cape Panwa, a headland peninsula on Phuket’s southeast coast, which offers access to Phang Nga Bay to the north, Phi Phi islands to the east and Racha islands to the south. ONE°15 Marina Panwa Phuket is expected to include “upscale dining options and recreational club facilities, ensuring an exceptional experience for marina guests”, according to SUTL Enterprise.

Arthur Tay, CEO and Executive Director of SUTL Enterprise (Leader, Issue 76), said: “Harnessing the established ONE°15 brand, we are excited to add another marina to our global network. ONE°15 Marina Panwa Phuket is committed to delivering the best-in-class marina standards and experience that our esteemed ONE°15 members and boaters worldwide can expect. We look forward to welcoming ONE°15 members, new and existing, to this exciting new marina location.”

Phuket’s existing marinas include Phuket Boat Lagoon and Royal Phuket Marina in the middle of the east coast and two megayacht-friendly marinas, Ao Po Grand Marina in the northeast and Phuket Yacht Haven in the far north.

Alberto Mancini’s exterior design ensures Azimut’s new Fly 72 fits well with the Italian shipyard’s modern family of flybridge models, but there’s a completely fresh look and feel in the interior following a first collaboration with Fabio Fantolino.

Azimut’s new Fly 72 features an Alberto Mancini exterior

When Giovanna Vitelli picked up the phone to call architect and designer Fabio Fantolino, the Azimut-Benetti Group Chairwoman knew what she was looking for: another decisive step in the updating of Azimut’s offerings.

An upgrade of the Azimut 72 designed by the late Stefano Righini with interiors by Carlo Galeazzi, the new Fly 72 is among Azimut’s latest models to feature an exterior by Alberto Mancini – now responsible for most new S, Fly and Grande series designs. However, for the interiors, Vitelli wanted to work for the first time with Fantolino, despite the fact he had never worked on the design of a yacht.

“They sought out my studio for the interiors after they had carefully examined our styles and analysed the market sectors that our work would appeal to,” Fantolino recalls. “They were looking to upgrade on elegance.”

The cockpit is well sheltered and features a C-shaped sofa and a large table

The upgrade the Azimut-Benetti Group is reaching for with the revamp of its product line is sweeping. Objectives also include lighter, more energy-efficient yachts for a greener, more sustainable approach to life at sea.

With the new model part of Azimut’s Carbon-Tech Generation, Pierluigi Ausonio’s PLANA studio designed the Fly 72’s naval architecture with a hull in GRP and large areas of the superstructure and the beach platform in weight-saving carbon-fibre.

Up top, the carbon-fibre-laminated flybridge is 30 per cent lighter than it would have been if fully built in fibreglass, says the yard. The overall reduction of weight improves fuel efficiency and keeps the boat’s centre of gravity low, always a plus for a planing yacht’s comfort and manoeuvrability.

OUTDOOR SPACES

Mancini has been penning the exteriors of most of Azimut’s new Fly, S and Grande yachts and the consistency of his work has brought a real family feeling to the shipyard’s new offerings. “I always try to create a dialogue between traditional and modern, land-based and seafaring,” Mancini says.

Azimut, Fly 72, Alberto Mancini, Fabio Fantolino

The flybridge has a C-shaped dinette to port, outdoor galley, helm station and sunpads

While the yachts he has designed for Azimut have long sweeps of glass that bring lots of light into the interiors, Mancini never designs what he calls “glass shoebox yachts” and always keeps his lines fluid, especially when designing a flybridge yacht that’s sporty in its essence.

“As a designer, I feel I should coax owners back into a more seafaring world because it’s important not to forget that we’re at sea and have to respect it.”

To access the sea, the transom has a high-low swim platform with a fold-down ladder. The hydraulic gangway is telescopic, while the garage can store a 4m tender and a jetski, plus there’s an additional storage locker for toys such as Seabobs and diving equipment.

Azimut, Fly 72, Alberto Mancini, Fabio Fantolino

The roomy flybridge has an open aft deck

Up the steps, the aft cockpit has a comfortable C-shaped sofa and a table in synthetic stone. Shaded by the flybridge overhang, the area also has a wet bar that can be closed off to keep a clean look.

A starboard staircase leads to the large flybridge, which has an open aft section that owners can set up as they wish to make the most of the views through a glass balustrade topped by a slender stainless steel rail.

The carbon-fibre hard top has an opening central section and shades an area with couches, a table and a full outdoor galley. The helm station has Raymarine touch screens, while the area around it can be set up with a table or sun pads.

Azimut, Fly 72, Alberto Mancini, Fabio Fantolino

The foredeck has a C-shaped couch, while forward is a large sunbathing area

The foredeck is also exceptional and benefits from the extra space provided by the trapezoidal bow shape. Couches and sun pads can be shaded by a hydraulically operated bimini without the fuss of mounting awnings on poles. And the bow’s accentuated flange means water is deflected off the foredeck, so no surprise splashes.

FANTOLINO’S SURPRISE

However, it’s all change inside, after Fantolino responded positively to Vitelli’s request to design the Fly 72’s interiors. “When someone calls your studio, you know they’re looking for your style. Her thoughts on the project and Azimut’s objective for the yacht matched ours. From there, we had an optimal working relationship and made a great team,” he says of his first yachting project.

Azimut, Fly 72, Alberto Mancini, Fabio Fantolino

Fabio Fantolino’s yachting debut has resulted in a light, open and warm interior

“It was a challenge, but being an architect is always a challenge. When you’re called to work in a new sector, it’s always a pleasure because it’s a new world, a new opportunity to express yourself. I’m always pushing my design comfort zone; that’s the joy in my line of work.”

Fantolino and his studio started the project with a market analysis, and were surprised at what they found. “We didn’t expect the nautical world to be so isolated from the rest of the design world. It seemed niche and maybe a bit exclusive up to about 10 years ago, then the design world accelerated, and trends changed,” he says.

“The world of transversal design moved ahead while nautical design dropped back. It didn’t look niche anymore. It just looked old and wasn’t keeping pace.”

Azimut, Fly 72, Alberto Mancini, Fabio Fantolino

Aft view of the saloon shows large windows on both sides offering grand sea views, plus an easy connection to the cockpit

Fantolino’s goal was to bring the worlds of nautical and transversal design closer together and create an interior where elegance and refinement would also be luxurious.

“Our approach was to update the nautical language with new colours, materials, shapes and combinations. Aboard the Fly 72, we synced luxury design with yacht design and international design by using contradictions, giving contemporary lines to classic materials or creating contrast between straight and curved lines or matte and glossy surfaces.

“The hard part is finding the sweet spot between contrast and comfort in a smaller space because you must also have balance and equilibrium. We wanted to avoid a puzzle of overlapping areas so the space would feel larger and more open.”

The midships galley connects to all the aft and fore areas

WALKING INTO WOW

Large and open is what you feel immediately when you enter the saloon and find long windows in uninterrupted panes of glass, soft shapes, interesting textures and muted colours. Fantolino’s studio also designed all the furnishings, from the lamps to the couches and tables, but that wasn’t enough for Fantolino.

“Aboard a yacht, the exterior is always nearby, and you don’t want to distract from the views, but you still want a wow effect when you enter the interior,” he says. The wow is the galley, which Fantolino recalls as being difficult to design.

“But it was also the spot that gave us the greatest satisfaction as it gives personality to the interior. Working with a single focal point was important because on a yacht everything is physically close to you. Guests should enjoy being inside, so designers must lighten things up. That’s more difficult in a smaller space.”

The dining table to starboard

The galley’s design, with its serving station dressed up in coloured wood, is impressive. Its central location with the dining area across from it makes it a convivial, social area and fits the way we live today, especially when we’re on vacation. Fore of the galley is the helm and a tight crew dinette or games table to port.

STYLISHLY CONSISTENT

Lower-deck accommodation features a VIP cabin fore with a centrally placed bed that benefits from the extra width provided by the trapezoidal bow. The full-beam owners’ cabin is midships and has large, single-pane hull windows in structural glass, a central bed and lots of storage. A TV is concealed behind a magic mirror at the foot of the bed and there’s even a safe in the closet.

The full-beam master suite and other three guest cabins reflect the look of the rest of Fantolino’s interior

There are two further guest cabins, while a separate crew area can sleep two. The look throughout is consistently stylish, due also to the fact that Fantolino has thought of everything, right down to the taps in the bathrooms.

“Chromed faucets are not in fashion anymore,” he says of a small detail that can make a big difference. “Maybe in the nautical world, nobody realised the market was looking ahead and that people didn’t want the same old thing.”

Interiors aside, Fantolino admits to enjoying his time spent aboard the Fly 72 during sea trials, even if he wasn’t focused on the power and performance supplied by the twin 1,400hp MAN V12 engines.

The master suite’s day bed doubles as seating for the vanity table

“It was a lovely experience to work in this new world, as it’s very different from anything we had done before. You can learn about managing the storage spaces and how to work within the limitations of materials, and I thank Azimut for helping us to avoid some errors,” he admits.

“The hardest part about nautical design is making a smaller space feel light. The design and quality of materials need to impress, and there are limits on the materials you can use, but within those limits you can still take a lot of steps to lighten the feeling. That said, the experience of being aboard the yacht on the water was even better than I thought it would have been. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Dufour’s 60th anniversary celebrations started at Boot Dusseldorf with the world premiere of the Dufour 44, so where does this yacht fit among the brand’s updated portfolio?

The current renewal of the range started with the Dufour 530, which debuted at Boot in 2020. However, the first product from under the umbrella of the new management team was the Dufour 470, which was the first boat with the chine that runs the length of the hull below the sheerline. It’s a very specific silhouette.

On the 470, we also introduced a step in-between the helm and the bench to facilitate the circulation on board. We really wanted people to be able to circulate. We had the image of kids running on the deck and jumping in the water, coming back and running again. This is the nature of the boat we wanted to develop.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The Dufour 470 introduced a chine that runs the length of the hull below the sheerline

The Dufour 44 sits in the middle of Dufour’s range of nine models and is a good mix of the 470, which is not a flagship but a big boat, as well as two recent launches, the 37 and 41, which are smaller but not small. We learned a lot from the 470 and then the 37 and 41. I think the 44 has all the advantages, such as the same silhouette, the same kind of performance and sail capacity.

You also have this good circulation on board because you have double access from the back, a bigger aft platform, plus the step in-between the helm and the bench. Also, the side decks are huge – we even had that comment by one of our competitors visiting the boat. Even if we sacrificed a lot of things for the outside, we’re very surprised to have such a big volume inside.

The 44 is also the second Dufour with an interior by Luca Ardizio of Ardizio Design.

We started our collaboration with Luca on the Dufour 41, so we learned how to work with him along with [Umberto] Felci, because everything is linked together. For example, Umberto wants the boat to sail well so may want a narrower hull, but at the same time Luca wants more space inside, so it’s all linked. On the 41, we all learned how to work together and improve our product, and the 44 is a more mature boat because of those learnings.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The Dufour 44 (on right) was a world premiere at Boot Dusseldorf this year

Do the beam and volume inside the 41 and 44 distinguish them from their predecessors?

The 470 was the first step. The previous generation of boats were a bit narrow, and we even saw offshore racing boats getting wider. I’m from this world along with others at Dufour, so we knew it was a good thing. At the same time, our clients sometimes use their engines, if it’s too windy or if there are big waves. We were confident in adding a big bow, but we wanted to keep some wave-crossing capacity.

Proportionally, we probably reached the maximum beam on the 37 for its hull size. Because she’s short, she has a ratio of volume in front that’s bigger than the other ones. We reduced that ratio on the 41 and then again on the 44, because we had enough space inside, and we think the compromise was even better.

Personally, what catches your eye on the Dufour 44?

It’s a very specific silhouette. When I travel, I always try to look at all the boats and you can immediately identify a Dufour because it has a very specific silhouette. And I really like Umberto Felci’s drawing and design, which is very clever, very well balanced. It creates a nice atmosphere.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The Dufour 44 features an exterior by Felci Yacht Design, which has designed for Dufour since 2002

I like the shapes below the waterline, as it’s convex instead of concave, so it helps to cross waves and to reduce the noise. I think the boats are a little bigger in front because the designs are more recent, so we’ve been able to explore a new way of creating volume. I think we’re a little bit ahead of everyone in that respect.

What options have clients been choosing?

We have a lot of discussions with them because we offer two different galleys, one forward and one along the starboard side. When we developed the boat, I wanted the forward-galley option even though I didn’t think it would sell well.

I thought it might be too small or not have enough storage, so only a few per cent of clients would choose it, but people who have seen it are very excited about it. Some said they’re cooking outside most of the time because we offer a real outdoor galley.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The Dufour 44 is the brand’s second model to feature an interior by Ardizio Design

We even see that some people use the boat without cooking. On one hand, I have lots of examples in Australia, US and France of owners spending days, weeks, months sailing around on their boat, but we also have some dealers who said a boat comes back after one year and the galley hasn’t been touched, whether the owners just go day sailing, eat at restaurants or cook outside.

Because the forward galley’s a little bit smaller, you have more social space and can have a facing sofa, so people can lie down, speak with each other and create a yacht club ambiance. It suits some people, but most people who sail for long periods or distances typically choose the larger galley along the side.

Like the Dufour 530 and 470, is the Dufour 44 available in an electric version?

We’re now able to offer electric versions of most of the range, although we’re just fine-tuning some details. An example is on the 37, where we’re working on how to install the generator in the back of the boat despite the limited space and include enough room to be able to service it.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The 530 kicked off Dufour’s latest generation of models by Umberto Felci

Within the Fountaine Pajot group, we’re developing our own alternative energy solutions for our brands. The solution is based on each model, and we have the electric motors and batteries we need.

We also have the propellers we need for the shape of our hulls. The propeller is very important in the solution because of efficient propulsion but also because you need the same propeller to regenerate electricity, so it needs to be the right shape.

How much demand is there for the electric versions of Dufour models?

People are asking for it, while we’re also promoting the option as part of the group’s plan and journey to become carbon neutral. It’s very important for us, but we see a growing demand anyway. Speaking with my sales team, they said that at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September, there weren’t so many requesting electric. However, at Boot Dusseldorf this year, maybe over 50 per cent of visitors were asking for the electric motors. It’s really growing fast.

The Dufour 37 debuted at Cannes in 2022 and features large volumes in a 32ft 9in hull with a 12ft 6in beam

It’s still new technology, so we decided to reduce the number of electric versions we’ll deliver this year, to make sure it all works well. We’re delivering 10 units of the electric Dufour 530 to Dream Yacht Charter, with the first to be delivered in September. We also had a Dufour 470 with electric engines sailing all last summer. We need feedback first before pushing the option hard in every market.

What led to Dufour’s appointment as the exclusive supplier of monohull sailing yachts to Sunsail and The Moorings from 2024?

In French, we say l’alignement des planetes, so ‘the alignment of the planets’ or the stars aligned. They wanted to see if there was something else on the market, so they looked around and saw several brands, including in France and Germany. When we hosted them at the factory, we opened our book and showed them what we were developing and our plans for the next three to four years.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

The three-cabin Dufour 41 will double as the Sunsail 41.3

We were transparent with them – and they were transparent with us. We had some honest, frank discussions about upcoming designs. We learnt a lot and it was very fruitful. We’re on the same page. We have lots of common pillars and they’re aligned with us on the carbon-neutrality journey, so it appeared quite natural to work together.

Does the appointment by such big charter companies affect your designs?

No. It was very important for us that one client would not impact the full range. About 50 per cent of Dufour orders are by private owners, with 50 per cent from charter companies. We make sure our boats respond to all demands, which is why we have two types of galley, three or four cabins, and several other options.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

A premiere at last September’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the Dufour 41 is expected at this year’s Singapore Yachting Festival

Model choices include rigging options and deck layouts or ‘versions’, such as Easy with two winches, Ocean for serious sailors with six winches (on the 44), and Performance with a longer boom. We can’t answer every single demand, but in our head, the private owner is our priority client, our first target.

How do you view the current global market for sailing boats?

Today, the market is low everywhere, but I feel we have a good base and I believe we’re gaining some market share. We’re the only shipyard to have renewed our full range, so creating new models helps to sell.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

Dufour’s flagship 61 is lined up for the 2024 Singapore Yachting Festival

Like everyone else, we’ve increased our price, but we try to be at a fair level. Even when our prices increased, so has the quality of the boat. We put a lot more things inside the new boats including storage and details that weren’t there before. We’ve developed in terms of design and quality, so I think our boats are priced correctly and offer good value.

Since 2018, Kevin Corfa has overseen Fountaine Pajot and Dufour in Asia, where you attended the Asia premiere of the Dufour 41 by VP Yachts at the Hong Kong International Boat Show in December, before The Yacht Sales Co displayed the flagship 61 at this year’s Thailand International Boat Show in Phuket and Singapore Yachting Festival.

We initially appointed The Yacht Sales Co as Dufour’s dealer for Australia and they’re growing, so we’ve since expanded their scope to include New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. In the past (under sister company Multihull Solutions), they already proved they were very good when selling Fountaine Pajot, which is why we decided to work with them. When they entered the market with us, we immediately saw a growth in sales.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

Kevin Corfa, Dufour’s Head of Asia, and Nicolas Berenger, Dufour’s Sales & Product Director

They’re super active, super good in marketing and super good in servicing boats. All the customers we have in Australia are very happy with the service, which is a big plus point for us. Also, the team give us a lot of feedback because their market is a little bit different, so we try to adapt a bit for them. I really trust them. They’re strong, very positive and very pro-active, so I don’t see why they won’t keep growing in other markets.

Where else in this region is Dufour doing well and where else can it grow?

Japan is already a strong market for us, and our dealer Active Marine is selling a lot of Dufour 37s. I think they could also sell the 41, but I don’t know if boats much bigger than that will sell well there.

Taiwan is very active. We have a very good dealer with Sofia and Peter of Taiwan Marine Service Company. I think they can build something very strong for the brand. It’s a good market for us because people there are willing to learn sailing and start racing at a fun club level. I think Dufour fits well with the Taiwan market. Mainland China has potential but is a difficult market now.

Dufour, Nicolas Berenger, Fountaine Pajot, VP Yachts, The Yacht Sales Co, VP Yachts

Corfa, Berenger, Vivian Chan (fourth left) and her VP Yachts team; Chan also runs Sun Hing Shipyard, Dufour’s service centre for North Asia

We should grow in Hong Kong, where VP Yachts is our dealer and runs our North Asia service centre at the Sun Hing Shipyard. When I was in Hong Kong, I could see there was a market, even if it’s very geared around club racing. We need to find a setup where we can adapt ourselves to that market, which is very interesting. I think we can gain some market share there.

Most of the cargo ships to Asia arrive in Hong Kong, so it could be one of our main distribution points and Vivian [Chan of VP Yachts] is very good at working with other markets like Taiwan and Japan. We had long discussions with all the dealers when we were in Hong Kong, so I think we’re at the beginning of a new story in Asia.

The Ferretti Group brand has splashed the first unit of the second model in its ‘Sport Utility Yacht’ series of flybridge motor yachts.

Pershing, GTX80, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vallicelli Design, Ferretti Group, Piero Ferrari

Pershing has launched hull one of the GTX80, which is scheduled to premiere this September at the Cannes Yachting Festival and follow the GTX116 that debuted at the same event last year. The 24m yacht with a 5.8m beam is a design collaboration between Vallicelli Design and the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

Featuring a dynamic, arch-shaped deckhouse, the sport-looking GTX80 has a sportbridge, main deck and lower deck, which can accommodate up to eight guests in a new four-cabin layout, while there’s also a crew cabin with two beds.

Pershing, GTX80, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vallicelli Design, Ferretti Group, Piero Ferrari

The CE Class A planing boat is equipped with three 1,000mhp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 engines, with preliminary data predicting a cruising speed of 28 knots and a top speed of 34 knots.

The exterior styling, in classic Pershing grey, is designed without stanchions, so points up the near-vertical bow and the continuous, slightly convex sheerline. In the bow, the bulwarks have been lightened by a longitudinal slot, while those in the stern have a dual function, both incorporating the winches and converting into drop-down lateral terraces.

Pershing, GTX80, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vallicelli Design, Ferretti Group, Piero Ferrari

The stern platform has three different positions: the default position, raised using the dual linear lift so it’s flush with the beach area, extending and integrating the aft living space in conjunction with the lateral terraces when open, and lowered such as for launching tenders.

The bright, airy spaces and extensive glazing on the main deck are a signature feature. The living area contains a generous corner sofa, a dining area – in a formal version with freestanding furniture on the first unit – and a fully integrated galley/bar in spaces directly overlooking the cockpit. Forward, the helm station is fitted with three 24-inch screens.

Pershing, GTX80, Cannes Yachting Festival, Vallicelli Design, Ferretti Group, Piero Ferrari

The black elements in the galley create a slight contrast with the pale parquet and are colour-coordinated with the metallic silver lacquered ceiling. The ceiling also features intersecting diagonal LED lights that diffuse light across the entire deck, from exterior to interior, in a pared-down design that focuses on multiple angles.

The 23sqm sun deck is 60 per cent larger than the category average, according to Pershing, and can be covered by an optional carbon-fibre hard top, as included on hull one.

Where most watchmakers begin with time-only watches, TAG Heuer is all about the chronograph, which is what makes the new Monaco Split Seconds Chronograph notable. It is technically the first-ever split seconds or rattrapante chronograph wristwatch from the brand – well, the first mechanical kind anyway. Some of you might feel the Only Watch edition for 2023 deserves credit as the first such watch for TAG Heuer but this is a series production model and Only Watch was delayed until May this year.

So why did it take TAG Heuer such a long time to make a split seconds chronograph? It made all sorts of legendary and singularly distinctive chronographs, after all, and even lent its expertise to LVMH sister brand Zenith. Well, as noted elsewhere, the automatic calibre TH81-00 here is a Vaucher movement, as it was in the previously-announced Only Watch model. Vaucher, part of the same outfit that owns and makes Parmigiani Fleurier watches, is famed for all manner of collaborations and TAG Heuer itself has been flexing its partnership muscles lately (see Kenisi last year).

The development of the new calibre was certainly undertaken under the wise eyes of TAG Heuer movement director Carole Forestier-Kasapi, who had this to say about the new Monaco Split Seconds Chronogaph: “Every component of the watch reflects our passion for horological artistry.” On that note, the new TH81-00 calibre is crafted in titanium, in large part; this probably means plates and bridges but perhaps also chronograph levers and cams. The dial also goes partly titanium, with sapphire crystal in the mix too. It is all quite complex and there is a reason for this, besides the Only Watch connection. But first, let us explain a little about the functions.

In a nutshell, the split seconds function allows the operator to time multiple events; these will begin at once but possibly end separately, like lap times between two racing cars, for example. It does this with the help of an extra set of chronograph hands and a third pusher, which the Monaco is the ideal shape for. Speaking of which, the movement here is basically round so we have automatic winding in place. Here are a few key specs to wrap things up for now. There are two colourways, in red and blue, both with 41mm grade 5 titanium cases. The power reserve is 65 hours (with the chronograph off) and 55 hours (with chronograph on). This might seem quite standard but calibre TH81-00 is also high-beat, keeping pace at 5 Hz. Water-resistance is much more casual though, at just 30m.

Finally, if you want to scratch your head about something, forget about the water-resistance. It is all about that complexity that I mentioned. The price of the Monaco Split Seconds Chronograph starts at CHF135,000, with some custom options taking it all the way to CHF165,000. Now, this provokes some questions – we have them and we are sure you have them too. Remember that TAG Heuer famously offered the most accessibly priced Swiss Made tourbillon chronograph for a little while. We shall do our best to more information on this from new CEO Julien Tornare.

Lagoon 43 to debut at Cannes Yachting Festival

SHARE

As it celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the French cat builder will stage the world premieres of two models at Cannes.

Lagoon, the world leader in pleasure cats with over 7,000 units built, has introduced several innovations on its upcoming 43, which is scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 10-15.

For the Lagoon 43, the Groupe Beneteau brand has again teamed up with its regular collaborators, namely VPLP Design for naval architecture, Patrick le Quement for the exterior, and Nauta Design for the interior. Featuring an overall length of 45ft 8in and a beam of 25ft 3in, the Lagoon 43 will ultimately succeed the best-selling Lagoon 42, which has sold over 1,000 units.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The mast features an overlapping jib and is stepped further forward than on the 42, at the forward end of the saloon. Other notable innovations include a big cutaway at the aft end of each bulwark, where opening a see-through gate allows guests easy access to the cockpit from the pontoon. The aft transoms are just one step down from the cockpit level.

Patrick Le Quément said: “Access on board is facilitated by a cutout in the hull sides, designed to integrate harmoniously into the lines that frame the hull windows and create a previously unknown ease of movement. This new access combines a functional feature with a more emotional touch: its proximity with the sea is its true splendour. It’s there, in the aft cockpit, that I can imagine myself daydreaming.”

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The cockpit features an aft sofa with an adjustable backrest for guests can face the sea if desired, while the davit can be covered by cushions to create a daybed above the water.

A wide step on the port side of the cockpit leads up to the helm station, where steps lead up to a flybridge featuring a C-shaped lounging area, a forward sunpad on the coachroof and an aft area for solar panels. The foredeck also offers an integrated C-shaped seating area.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

However, arguably the biggest innovation is the possibility to connect the outdoor and indoor dining areas to seat up to 12 guests. Both the cockpit and the saloon each have fixed sofas on the starboard side and a lengthways dining table, which can be connected when the saloon doors slide away, creating one enormous table for covered dining or just a large social area.

Nauta Design stated: “On the main deck, the sliding glass door and the dining/café area are designed in such a way as to allow you to arrange the dining table in various configurations: six seats in the interior, six seats in the exterior, or eight to 12 seats in a configuration we call ‘inside out’.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

“This solution combines the sofas in the cockpit with those of the interior dining area, so you can enjoy the exterior and interior spaces combined as one large space and not have to compromise on the interior or exterior.”

The saloon includes a large, open L-shaped galley in the forward port corner, while there are steps on each side of the room to the guest cabins. The new hull forms by VPLP offer generous interior volumes that have created larger berths and greater dimensions in every cabin compared to the 42, “offering unprecedented living space for a boat in this category”, according to Lagoon.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

The four-cabin version offers two en-suite guest cabins in each hull. The three-cabin version includes a full-length owner’s cabin in the starboard hull, with the bed forward, a huge storage and desk area midships, and a large bathroom aft.

VPLP Design stated: “We took on the challenge of designing hulls that bring a real contribution to the living space in the cabins, while conserving the boat’s seaworthy qualities. The emotions we wanted to evoke from Lagoon customers were multiple.

Lagoon, 43, 42, 60, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Patrick le Quement, Nauta Design, VPLP Design

“We wanted to offer large, modular living spaces, adaptable to various situations, whether cruising or at anchor, on a reasonably sized boat that’s easy to handle. The goal was also to bring continuous contact with the marine environment, with large windows in the hull, large glass panels, safe access to the sea, and enjoyable areas for relaxation.”

The Lagoon 43 is scheduled to debut at Cannes with the Lagoon 60, which was unveiled privately in March at the Lagoon Exclusive Days in Bordeaux. Meanwhile, the Lagoon 42 will continue production with a special anniversary edition featuring a unique four-cabin layout and a comprehensive equipment list.

Silent-Yachts has launched the first Silent 62 3-Deck solar-electric catamaran at its facility in Fano, Italy. The Austrian-owned company has produced multiple units of the Silent 60 and slightly extended 62, but the 62 3-Deck is the first version with a full flybridge.

The top deck can be ordered as an open sky lounge – as seen on the first unit – a closed sky lounge or closed owner’s suite. The model’s other options include a forward saloon door to the foredeck, which has been included on the latest launch.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 62, 3-Deck, flybridge, Austrian-owned, Fano, Italy, Fabrizio Iarrera

Fabrizio Iarrera, CEO of Silent-Yachts, said: “The launch of our first Silent 62 3-Deck is a proud moment as we continue to innovate and expand the Silent range. It’s also positive proof that the brand continues to operate normally and is focused on delivering boats to clients.”

The first Silent 62 3-Deck’s open flybridge offers full dining facilities, while the interior includes five-plus-one cabins for up to 12 overnight guests, as well as six bathrooms.

The Silent 62 3-Deck shares the same ultra-efficient drivetrain as the two Silent 62 catamarans launched at the end of last year. This next-generation drivetrain implements a 286kWh, liquid-cooled Lithium-ion battery pack with higher energy density, greater capacity and faster charging rates, due to optimised thermal management.

The CE A yacht is also equipped with 16.8kWp of solar panels, twin 180kW E-motors and a range extender, offering a cruising speed of six-eight knots and transoceanic range. Silent-Yachts plans to deliver the first Silent 62 3-Deck to its owners in a few weeks.

Yamaha Motor, which announced over US$17 billion in revenue for 2023, has closed its acquisition of Torqeedo. The Germany-based producer of electric marine motors was formerly owned by Deutz AG, the Cologne-based internal combustion engine manufacturer.

Yamaha is renowned for its motorcycles, while the Japanese brand’s mobility products also include outboard engines, WaveRunner jetskis and motor boats.

The Torqeedo acquisition marks Yamaha Motor’s entry into the dynamic electromobility market and marks a milestone in the company’s Marine CASE Strategy 2024, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the marine industry and includes the development of an electric propulsion line.

Toshiaki Ibata, Yamaha Motor’s Senior Executive Officer and Chief Director of Marine Business Operations, said: “With the acquisition of Torqeedo, the global market leader for electric mobility on the water, we are taking the next step in our Marine CASE Strategy for 2024. Torqeedo’s years of expertise provide us with expert support in driving the electrification of our marine applications to make an important contribution to a zero-emission shipping industry.”

Founded in 2005, Torqeedo has almost two decades of expertise in the electric mobility sector and more than 250 patents for electric motors, propellers and electrical systems. It also has series-production facilities and broad research resources, which the company now intends to use to develop boat motors with Yamaha Motor.

Fabian Bez (Leader, Issue 72), Torqeedo’s CEO, said: “With Yamaha Motor, we have a strong strategic partner at our side to jointly advance electromobility on the water. This merger offers us new opportunities to strengthen our leading position in the growing market for electric boat motor systems and to shape the future of boating sustainably together.”

CRN’s Project 146 is designed by Nuvolari Lenard

CRN, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, has announced the signing of a new contract for a fully bespoke 67m motor yacht that marks its 10th superyacht project designed by Nuvolari Lenard. While the Italian design studio handled the yacht’s sleek, streamlined exterior styling and its interiors, the naval architecture and engineering are also fully customised.

Known internally as M/Y Project 146, the yacht will feature a steel hull, aluminium superstructure and a diesel-electric propulsion system. The client is represented by Moran Yacht & Ship, which is the owner’s representative and whose new construction team negotiated the building contract, drew up the technical specifications, and will supervise the entire build.

Standout features include a touch-and-go helipad on the upper deck, an extensive beach club with water toys, and a spacious dive centre, while a state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion system has been designed for increased energy efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.

The shipyard’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable yacht design include the development of energy-recovery solutions and proper sizing of equipment. Project 146 is fitted with a heat-recovery system that uses the thermal energy from the generators to heat the water in the pools, water boilers and deck washing system.

Earlier Nuvolari Lenard motor yacht designs for CRN include the 43m Magnifica (2001), 46m Kooilust Mare (2003), 46m Saramour (2005), 72m Azteca (2009) and 55m Atlante (2015). These were followed in recent years by the 62m Voice (2020), 60m Comfortably Numb (2022) and 72m Njoy (2023), plus the 67m Project Maranello, which is currently in build.

The 85m M/Y 144 and 70m Project Thunderball (M/Y 145) are other full-custom CRN superyachts being built at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, on Italy’s east coast. The multi-brand hub is also producing six aluminium builds comprising the first two hulls of the Custom Line Navetta 50, hulls one and two of the Riva 54Metri, and hulls four and five of the Pershing 140.

The Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard is also where Custom Line’s composite range from 30-45m is built, with 26 yachts – as of early April – under construction in the sheds or at the finishing and testing stages on the docks before delivery to their owners and project management teams.
