Renowned for its drop-down sides and iconic waterside bar to port, Galeon’s flybridge range enters new territory as the 560 Fly introduces alfresco dining on the starboard side.

Tony Castro designed the 560 Fly’s shapely exterior

It’s coming up to nine years since Galeon debuted the 500 Fly at the 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival, where its drop-down sides and waterside bar provided not just a wow factor but expanded the ways guests could enjoy life on the sea on a 50ft boat.

MarineMax, the world’s largest yacht distributor, was quick to spot a good thing and four months later announced it was the shipyard’s US dealer. The move helped transform Galeon – now producing about 350 boats annually – into one of the leading brands in one of the industry’s most competitive segments.

Also in 2016, Asiamarine started representing Galeon on the other side of the Pacific and today is the brand’s official representative in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand, while overseeing a regional network of dealers in other markets.

The 560 Fly fits between the 500 Fly and 640 Fly

Since debuting the ‘beach mode’ concept on the 500 Fly, Galeon has continued to add layer upon layer of innovation in all areas of its flybridge yachts, which now range from 40-80ft. The design still feels ahead of its time, while the brand’s competitors in the flybridge sector have generally been slow to respond.

The line’s two largest models – the 680 Fly and flagship 800 Fly – don’t feature drop-down sides, but otherwise fold-down bulwarks have become a staple of new Galeon flybridge models, such as the 400 Fly (Review, Issue 56), 640 Fly (Review, Issue 64), and the new 440 Fly (Review, Issue 74) and 560 Fly that debuted last year.

The 560 Fly is Galeon’s second-largest model to feature the wings, yet the brand’s ‘transformer’ DNA has moved to a new level on the newcomer, with both the main deck and flybridge offering functionality, flexibility and space that hasn’t been seen on a monohull this size to date.

CASTRO DOES IT AGAIN

First things first. Among an overall length of 58ft 6in, the model has a 53ft 5in hull with a 15ft 10in beam, which expands to 22ft 4in when in ‘beach mode’.

The swim platform’s integrated steps, cockpit stairs and flybridge stairs are all to port

Tony Castro, who has been designing for Galeon since 2001, has created a muscular exterior, with a tall band of dark glazing running from fore to aft along each hull side. Above, the saloon glazing is topped by a curvy superstructure, which is matched by flowing side supports for the hard top. Even before you board the 560 Fly, you feel like it offers ‘a lot of boat’.

The hydraulic aft platform can carry a RIB or tender and sets the tone for the fun to come with its ability to descend into the water while an integrated ladder to port unfurls to provide access for guests. The transom incorporates a fold-out sofa that’s good for putting on flippers or watching over kids in the water.

The drop-down bulwarks include large glass inserts and a boarding gate

Port side stairs lead to the cockpit, which is covered by the flybridge overhang and features a large table on two fixed pedestals and an L-shaped sofa that reaches round to starboard. Stairs, again to port, lead to the flybridge.

The top deck has an open aft area that can include a couple of sun loungers, but otherwise Galeon has provided a fully fitted master class in maximising seating and lounging space on the fly.

Flanked by the hard top supports, the two-part outdoor galley includes an L-shaped set-up to starboard with a grill, sink, fridge and storage. To port is another wet bar, with either a fixed countertop or fold-up double grill atop storage and an ice maker. Both sides allow the cook or anyone grabbing drinks to face and converse with other guests.

The flybridge has helm and companion seating, mirror dinettes, a full-beam galley and an open aft deck

Forward, the main social area features not one but two C-shaped dinettes that mirror each other. Each has a dining table that can fold out to adjoin the other and create one large dining table with seating on all four sides. It’s a remarkable option, although it’s advisable for anyone planning to sit at the forward end to visit the head first.

The transformations don’t stop there. The forward backrest of each sofa can be moved aft, necessary to create the bench-seat sofa for the helm to starboard. To port, moving the backrest creates matching companion seating that faces a long sofa under the windscreen. Throughout the fly, there’s storage under almost all the seating.

Backrests can be added to the foredeck sunpad

Look over the windscreen and you’ll see the foredeck, where a sofa faces a large sunpad that can fit backrests to create aft-facing seating and even has a small fold-up backrest at the forward end.

OPENING SALOON

Back to the cockpit and you’re at the heart of what makes this model different to any Galeon before. Even before the drop-down sides are lowered, they still allow access to the boat from either side due to an integrated boarding gate in the bulwark. When the sides are down, integrated glass allows you to see the water look through the floor.

The port bulwark allows access to the brand’s iconic waterside bar, where two stools can be inserted into the side deck and a foldout bar provides a platform for drinks and snacks. A huge open window allows easy conversation between the outdoor bar and those in the U-shaped galley and rest of the saloon.

The saloon’s large starboard door slides forward to allow the seats and table to be folded out

The rest of the saloon is not so easy to define on the 560 Fly because a sliding door on the starboard side can completely open the aft half of the saloon, giving a clear view over the water when the bulwark is down.

This is already appealing but Galeon has gone a major step further by enabling the dinette to expand outside to provide alfresco dining for four. The starboard side of each seat can fold down to create facing bench sofas either side of a table that also unfolds to double its size. To port, a waterside bar; to starboard, waterside dining. It’s a winner.

An enormous fridge-freezer and a U-shaped galley to port face a convertible dinette

With three sides of the aft half of the saloon open to the outside, Galeon has broken new ground in indoor-outdoor living in the sub-60ft flybridge sector. In fact, the enormous footprint and lack of barriers creates such a large sense of space that it’s easy to forget there’s more to explore inside.

It’s two steps up to the forward – or indoor – half of the saloon, where Galeon still manages to fit a C shaped sofa around a large table, which can electronically lower to seat height and be covered and converted into a double bed for extra guests. To starboard is a two-seat sofa that’s backed by a high low 50-inch TV. Both sides have large windows that can be covered by electrically actuated shades.

The starboard helm includes a bench sofa, while to port is storage below the large one-piece windscreen that also illuminates the central companionway and the hallway on the lower deck, which houses all the accommodation.

CREATIVE CABINS

Midships, the full-beam master stateroom has an en-suite, while the guest cabin to starboard and forward VIP cabin share a bathroom to port. The entrance to the master stateroom passes the door to the bathroom, which benefits from a massive hull window that even extends to the walk-in shower.

The full-beam master suite is midships

Two steps lead down to the bedroom, where the double bed faces a 50-inch television and is flanked by hanging cupboards in both aft corners and massive hull windows.

A hip-height storage cabinet – including a small fridge – runs along the starboard side, while to port is a desk cum vanity table beside a thick-cushioned seat, forward of which is a pull-out, two-level bottle drawer! There’s additional storage under the bed, under the TV and above the bedhead.

The guest cabin has a hanging cupboard and two single beds, with the inward bed able to be pushed across to create a double. The room also benefits from a huge hull window.

The forward VIP also benefits from huge hull windows

The VIP suite is impressively spacious considering its bow location and offers over 7ft of headroom at the bottom of the bed. It’s naturally bright due to big side windows and three skylights including a central opening hatch that provides the option of fresh air.

On both sides of the bed – which faces a 32-inch TV on the aft bulkhead – there’s storage integrated into stylish, curved joinery, which includes a hanging cupboard to starboard. To port is a vanity table with swingout stool, and the door to the bathroom, which is like the owner’s and has a huge window spanning across to the walk-in shower.

The 560 Fly (above) debuted in 2023 with the 440 Fly, the latter coming to Asia through Asiamarine

All the cabins feature smooth joinery, lots of recessed lighting and a nice variety of textures, especially evident in the attractive bedheads. And there’s even a twin crew cabin aft with access from the swim platform. Galeon’s forward-looking focus on flexibility and functionality shows no signs of slowing down.

As it celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024, Simpson Marine is embarking on a new era without Mike Simpson, as the founder retires following the company’s sale to Sanlorenzo. With the core management team and regional heads remaining, expanding across Asia-Pacific is just one of several changes on the horizon.

Simpson Marine without Mike Simpson. It will take some time to get used to. The man who founded the company in 1984 and developed it into Asia’s largest yacht dealership has finally chosen to treat himself to retirement after 40 years at the helm, following the sale of his company to Sanlorenzo, owned by his long-time friend Massimo Perotti.

Simpson and Perotti both attended the recent Simpson Marine Group Summit at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel in Hong Kong, which doubled as a company handover ceremony and a celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary.

The acquisition by Sanlorenzo has brought a few changes to Simpson Marine – and promises more – but it’s arguably more surprising how much has stayed the same. Simpson Marine remains a regional, multi-brand dealership, despite concluding contracts with Beneteau, Lagoon and Aquila.

Simpson Marine has represented Sanlorenzo in Asia since 2015 and the Italian shipyard continues at the pinnacle of the dealer’s portfolio, which includes sister brand Bluegame, British builder Fairline, RIB manufacturer Highfield and potentially Nautor Swan if the Finnish shipyard is acquired by Sanlorenzo.

As before, the company still offers its wider suite of services like brokerage, after-sales and yacht management, as well as divisions like Simpson Yacht Charter and Simpson Superyachts.

And, crucially, the company has retained its core management team, which includes Richard Allen (Chief Operating Officer), Nick Stratton (Chief Sales Officer), Angel Zhou (Vice President, China), Ewa Stachurska (Vice President, Marketing and Business Development) and Peter Lui (Chief Financial Officer), as well as James Clayton (Sales Director, Simpson Superyachts).

Around the region, the company’s Country Heads remain in place, comprising Angel Zhou (China), Tom Allen (Hong Kong), Simon Theseira (Malaysia), Paul Whelan (Indonesia), Howard Prime (Thailand), Harvey Brewin (Singapore) and Tony Chen (Taiwan).

Aside from the pruning of its portfolio of new yachts, changes at Simpson Marine include the expansion of its representation of Sanlorenzo and Bluegame from Asia to Asia-Pacific, with an office set to open in Australia this year.

SUITE OF BRANDS

Richard Allen, who has worked at Simpson Marine since 2012, has effectively been handed the baton by Mike Simpson. Since being promoted from Group Sales Director to Group General Manager and now Chief Operating Officer, he has overseen the day-to-day operations of the company as it grew to about 140 employees in 12 offices and service centres across seven countries and regions.

Richard Allen pays tribute to Mike Simpson

“Mike had 40 years at the helm and steered Simpson Marine into the leading position. It’s now my job with my team to set a new course for the next 40 years,” Allen says. “We have a strong, globally established parent company and leader in its market segment, with a clear direction where they want to go, so we’re all looking forward to the challenge and exciting times ahead.”

Following Sanlorenzo’s year-long acquisition of Simpson Marine, Allen has had to manage the sensitive conclusion of long-standing relationships with Beneteau and Lagoon, Group Beneteau sister brands represented by Asia’s biggest dealership since the mid-1980s.

“The ending of our relationship with Groupe Beneteau was a difficult one commercially and personally, as I’ve been working with Beneteau for over 30 years, as has Simpson Marine,” Allen says. “However, in view of the new strategic positioning of our company portfolio, we mutually agreed to part ways as Sanlorenzo decided to concentrate on products in the luxury sector.”

With Bluegame launching a new multihull line, led by the BGM75 that debuted last year, Simpson Marine ended its representation of Aquila in Hong Kong and Singapore. The dealer will continue to manage the powercat brand in Malaysia and Thailand until new representation has been appointed.

However, Simpson Marine continues to represent Fairline, which it started representing in 2018 in Hong Kong and the Philippines before the scope expanded to the rest of Southeast Asia as well as Taiwan, and later mainland China. Fairline’s range spans from the F//Line 33 to the Squadron 68 flybridge, so fits well with Sanlorenzo, which starts from the SX76.

“Following our acquisition by Sanlorenzo, the decision was made to work with only leading brands in each market segment that complement each other. We wanted a brand that fills the largest segment of boat sales in Asia, which is 45-70ft, and Fairline continues to fit this perfectly,” Allen says.

Bluegame’s flagship BGX73 is also set to show in Singapore

“With its recent investment, new model launches and product development, Fairline complements Sanlorenzo. It’s one of the leading motor yacht brands, with over 50 years of history and well recognised globally.”

At least one world-famous brand seems likely to be joining the Simpson Marine portfolio, according to Allen. Following the announcement of Sanlorenzo’s signing of an MoU with Nautor Swan at the end of last year, he says he “expects to be working with this prestigious yachting brand in the near future”.

Ultimately, Simpson Marine is seeking to represent brands of the same premium quality and high-end positioning of Sanlorenzo. “We’re exploring a few other brands in various product segments and markets, but for now we’re concentrating on the luxury segment,” Allen outlines.

“Our focus is now on less but better. We don’t need to sell the most boats but to provide the best customer experience and a truly carefree yachting lifestyle. We want to help our clients on their journey into their first yacht and stay with them as they enjoy the yachting lifestyle. This can start from a first charter to potentially buying a yacht or finding a used yacht and starting their yachting journey.”

EXPANDING OFFERINGS

Simpson Marine is not only Asia’s biggest yacht dealership but its most experienced and arguably most multi-faceted. In 2013, Allen established Simpson Yacht Charter, which has grown to become a well-recognised charter company offering a range of boats across Asia from its bases in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

Allen says there are plans to grow Simpson Yacht Charter, while simultaneously developing superyacht charters in Asia and beyond by building on Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of Equinoxe in late 2022 and the expansion of the mono-brand Sanlorenzo Charter Fleet.

Simpson Marine has been increasingly focused on superyachts since representing Sanlorenzo. After many years of discussion and plans, Simpson Superyachts was launched as a business in 2022, with James Clayton now heading the division as Sales Director.

Clayton, who spent the first 15 years of his life in Malaysia and Singapore, has worked in the yachting industry for over two decades. He has held roles with Benetti and US brokerage Merle Wood & Associates, worked in Europe and the US, and sold several superyachts in Asia, where he has returned for his latest role.

“Superyacht sales require a special skillset and an international network, and James has brought those to Simpson Superyachts. He and the team have already managed a number of superyacht sales and superyacht charters,” Allen says.

“This segment is going to grow throughout the region. With our expansive network and links with Sanlorenzo and other large superyacht builders, we see opportunities to make Simpson Superyachts global over the coming years.”

ASIA TO ASIA-PACIFIC

Nick Stratton has been the Sales Manager for Sanlorenzo Asia since 2017 and Bluegame Asia since 2020. As well as his promotion to Simpson Marine’s Chief Sales Officer, overseeing all new yacht sales, he wears a second hat as Vice President of Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific.

With Simpson Marine now handling a larger regional scope for both brands, the Brit will help oversee the move into Australia and New Zealand, while targeting growth areas in Asia.

“Simpson Marine and Sanlorenzo have always been well aligned in representing the brand for the region. This led to the expansion into all of Asia-Pacific, which allows us to offer a consistent, high-end service to all markets, centrally managed and supported from our regional head offices,” says Stratton, who has worked for Simpson Marine since 2010, first in Singapore then Hong Kong.

“Sanlorenzo and Simpson Marine are partners for a reason – the best brand with the best representation and local presence. It’s a winning combination that will continue to grow in strength. With a refined focus, our team will become stronger and more knowledgeable, and this will benefit our existing and future owners.”

Last year, significant arrivals in the region included the Sanlorenzo SD118, which has further orders from Asia-Pacific and is sold out until 2026. The first SL106A in Southeast Asia was delivered, adding to multiple units of the SL90A and SL96A asymmetric models already in Asia.

Sanlorenzo Asia has more than 20 orders in build, with a 44m Alloy, SP110 (Review, Issue 68), SX100 (Review, Issue 75) and SD90 (Review, Issue 70) among models expected to be handed over this year. The Asia fleet will be close to 100 units when the hulls in build are added to the yachts already in the region.

Hong Kong and Singapore have been the main delivery hubs, while mainland China, Thailand and Indonesia are also key markets. “We’re expecting strong growth in Southeast Asia, which is already the strongest hub for Sanlorenzo Superyacht models from 40m upwards,” Stratton says.

Simpson Marine also plans to continue organising the Captains Workshop, held for the first time last year. Dedicated to captains and crews, the three-day event was supported by Sanlorenzo as well as local manufacturers and suppliers.

Simpson Marine has a strong focus on service, management and crew

“Investing in our teams is crucial as the yachts grow in size and sophistication. We must constantly improve, so it’s important to invest in the training and development of the people working in the industry,” Stratton says. “The first Captains Workshop was amazing – even if we were slightly overwhelmed by the attendance – so we’re planning future editions including in Southeast Asia.”

ITALIAN CONNECTION

A notable change following the acquisition is the appointment of Luca Cristino as Chairman of Simpson Marine. Based in Italy but expected to visit Asia regularly, Cristino has known Perotti since 1994 after being interviewed by him for a job at Azimut-Benetti Group, where he spent over two decades in different roles, while Perotti went on to acquire Sanlorenzo in 2005.

Cristino has spent the past four years as Sanlorenzo’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing after again being hired by Perotti, who also offered him the new role as Simpson Marine’s Chairman. Despite his lofty new position, the Italian is quick to tip his hat to the man who has been the face of Simpson Marine since its inception.

Luca Cristino, the new Chairman of Simpson Marine

“I took on this role because I like adventure and challenges, and what better option than Simpson Marine, which is a brand recognised not only in Asia but worldwide,” says Cristino, an avid skier since growing up in the Italian Alps. “It’s remarkable what Mike Simpson and his team have achieved in the past 40 years.”

Cristino has spent much of his yachting career in sales but also managing relationships with dealer networks, so has embraced the opportunity to move to “the other side”.

He appears well qualified to oversee a multi-faceted company as his three decades in the industry have included a wide range of roles covering service and refit, insurance, finance, design services, showrooms, marinas and superyachts.

Cristino has also witnessed the dramatic growth of Sanlorenzo first hand, having briefly worked there in 2010, five years after Perotti acquired the company. He remembers the yacht builder generated around €200 million in annual revenue and had about 200 full-time employees when he first worked there.

Sanlorenzo has multiple facilities in Italy

Fast forward 14 years and the company has quadrupled in size, announcing €840.2 million of net revenue from the sale of new Sanlorenzo and Bluegame yachts last year. Manufacturing is carried out in shipyards in La Spezia, Ameglia, Viareggio and Massa, all located within a 50km radius, and the company has about 800-1,000 employees and works with thousands of contractors.

“The difference between Sanlorenzo when I first worked there and now is unbelievable. The company is in a totally new dimension,” Cristino says. “Most of it comes from the vision of Massimo, who saw the potential of Sanlorenzo’s DNA, a focus on customisation. Rather than fostering his previous experience, Massimo focused more on close with top designers, tailor-made products and exclusivity of the brand.”

When Perotti acquired Sanlorenzo, the shipyard offered the traditional SL line of planing yachts. Among composite yachts ranging from 24-38m, he has added the SD (semi-displacement), SX (crossover) and SP (smart performance) ranges.

He has also introduced Superyacht models from 40-73m in steel and aluminium, while also acquiring Bluegame, which builds from 13-23m, in a bid to provide a wide range of yachts to attract and retain clients.

“Massimo identified that the customer is always at the centre of attention. When the client visits the Sanlorenzo shipyards, everything revolves around them,” Cristino says.

“The attention to the client permeates through the whole organisation – not just the sales and marketing departments but also production and technical departments and product managers. Clients appreciate this. The mantra is ‘we start the journey together’ and this continual relationship makes them loyal to Sanlorenzo.”

Simpson Marine has already delivered about 45 Sanlorenzo yachts just in Hong Kong, which stands as the brand’s leading light in the region but also an example of what can be achieved. Singapore is another key hub, while Cristino cites Thailand and Malaysia – which has been through a period of political instability – as having “huge potential”.

Asia’s largest yacht dealership, Simpson Marine is now expanding across Asia-Pacific

As Simpson Marine embarks on its new chapter, without its founder and under Sanlorenzo’s ownership, the region’s largest yacht dealership is set to spread its wings across Asia-Pacific, from Japan down to Australia, with Simpson Superyachts potentially reaching around the world.

“The company is working very well, so we just want to keep building on what Simpson Marine has been doing,” Cristino says. “Hong Kong and Singapore have been our two main hubs, but we see potential for strong growth in other areas of the Asia-Pacific.”

Prestel & Partner understands the importance of family offices to ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs). Together with his partners, Tobias Prestel created a safe space for these individuals or their Family Offices to get together and exchange ideas. Prestel & Partner’s Family Office Forums provide an exchange between family principals, family office C-suite executives, wealth owners, private investors, and a select few partners with topical expertise on best practices in family governance and investments. With over 40 years of international experience as an entrepreneur, publisher, and conference director — founding partner and CEO at Prestel & Partner, Tobias Prestel speaks to LUXUO on the impact of family offices on the world’s economy, the evolution of office spaces and how Asia’s family offices adapt to geopolitical power.

How important are family offices to the world’s economy?

Family offices play a critical role in the world’s economy. They manage significant assets, influence major investments, and support a range of philanthropic endeavours. Their decisions can lead to innovation, economic development, and social change, impacting various sectors globally.

Crucially, private investors don’t face the restrictions and limitations of institutional investors, making it much faster and easier for family offices to make things happen and to explore different opportunities. This is one of the many reasons why we feel honoured to bring these influential individuals together around the world at our events.

How many variations of the family office exist?

There are several variations of family offices, including single-family offices, which serve one family, and multi-family offices, which cater to multiple families. The services and structures of family offices can vary widely, depending on the needs and goals of the families they serve.

Our events are globally appreciated because they adopt a meticulous approach to participation. We go beyond merely identifying if an entity is a family office; we also scrutinise whether they intend to sell products or services to attendees. This is crucial as many family offices are also in the business of offering financial products and consultancy services to their peers. By doing so, we ensure that our events maintain a high concentration of genuine investors, emphasising the “pure buy-side”. This strategy aims to foster an environment more conducive to investment and collaboration rather than sales.

How have you seen the family office space evolve over the last decade?

Over the last decade, the family office space has evolved significantly. There has been a shift towards more professional management, with an emphasis on strategic investments and philanthropy. Additionally, there is a growing focus on sustainable and responsible investing, as well as a greater use of technology for managing assets and evaluating investment opportunities. We try to cater to the evolving needs of Family Offices at our events by introducing new themes and debates at our forums. For example, we started spotlighting hot topics like AI investments and longevity when they were not as widely discussed in the public discourse as they are now.

Tobias PrestelTobias Prestel pictured with co-founder, Katja Mülheim, Founding Partner, and Managing Director.

Today’s wealth owners are far younger, how does this transition manifest itself in the family office space?

The transition to younger wealth owners has led to a change in the priorities and strategies of family offices. There is a stronger emphasis on sustainability, technological innovation, and social impact. Younger generations are also more inclined to integrate their values and ethics into their investment decisions. It’s been so stimulating to witness this shift firsthand and to welcome more and more next-gen leaders into our network. They bring a breath of freshness and contribute immensely to each conversation. It’s also been very interesting to see how the new generation is focused on moving forward without ever forgetting their origins and remaining focused on heritage preservation.

How does geography play into the differences between family offices?

Geography significantly influences the operation and focus of family offices. Different regions have varying regulatory environments, economic conditions, and cultural attitudes toward wealth and philanthropy. This affects how family offices invest, engage with communities, and pursue their objectives.

Is there a particular reason why Singapore was chosen over other cities like Hong Kong, Jakarta, or Shanghai to be the hosting city?

Singapore was chosen for its strategic location, robust financial services ecosystem, and stable political environment. The city-state is a hub for wealth management in Southeast Asia and offers a conducive environment for discussions on wealth, investment, and family office management. It’s also important to note that around 60 percent of all firms listed on the Singapore Exchange, are family-led businesses.

What interests and topics do family offices have in common?

Family offices commonly focus on wealth preservation, estate planning, strategic investment, philanthropy, and intergenerational wealth transfer. They are also increasingly interested in sustainable and impact investing, as well as technological innovations that can enhance their operations and investment outcomes. It’s very important for FOs and their C-level decision-makers to have a safe space to discuss these topics and gain invaluable peer-to-peer perspectives.

Tobias PrestelTobias Prestel founder of Prestel & Partner

Tell us more about the great return with sustainable, responsible, and ethical impact investment.

Sustainable, responsible, and ethical impact investments align financial returns with positive social and environmental outcomes. They allow family offices to contribute to global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and healthcare while achieving competitive returns. This approach reflects a shift towards value-driven investment strategies. Over the years, we’ve seen countless UHNWIs aligning their investment goals with those of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

What are family offices in the “new economy and tech” space looking for?

In the “new economy and tech” space, family offices are looking for opportunities that offer significant growth potential through innovation and disruption. They are interested in emerging technologies, biotech advancements, and startups that promise to redefine industries and contribute to a sustainable future. Many VC firms linked to major Family Offices have a tech-driven approach and review hundreds of start-ups every year.

Do you believe families have a responsibility to do something more with their wealth?

Yes, I strongly believe families have a responsibility to leverage their wealth in meaningful ways. Beyond wealth preservation and growth, there is an opportunity to impact society positively and invest in a way that reflects their values and contributes to the greater good.

How are Asia’s family offices adapting to the changing balance of geopolitical power?

Asia’s family offices are adapting by diversifying their investments geographically and across asset classes. They are also becoming more engaged in global discussions on wealth management, sustainability, and geopolitical risks, ensuring their strategies are resilient and aligned with changing global dynamics. Adaptability is crucial and family offices are advantaged as they are able to change strategies much quicker than many other realities.

What do you think will be the biggest takeaway for those attending the forum in Singapore?

The biggest takeaway will likely be the importance of adaptability, foresight, responsible stewardship in managing family wealth, and the ever-present need to combine wealth preservation, legacy, and innovation. Attendees will learn about the latest trends, strategies, and challenges in the family office space, enabling them to navigate the complexities of the modern financial landscape effectively.

Ferretti Yachts 580

V Yachts Asia has sold a Ferretti Yachts 580, which is scheduled to arrive in Pattaya in June and will be based in Ocean Marina Jomtien. Featuring an overall length of 59ft 10in and a beam of 16ft 5in, the second-smallest Ferretti Yachts model had its world premiere at the Boot Dusseldorf indoor show in Germany last year.

The yacht headed for the Gulf of Thailand will be the first Ferretti Yachts 580 in Asia and has been tailored for the owner, according to V Yachts Asia, which was appointed as the Thailand dealer for Ferretti Yachts, Riva and Pershing in early 2021 but has had a new-look management since late last year.

“The owner has made some fantastic selections to elevate this remarkable yacht,” said Kanison ‘Pid’ Premprasert, a Partner at V Yachts Asia.

“Along with the upgrade to Volvo Penta’s 1,000hp D13 engines and the choice of the beautiful Contemporary interior scheme, there are extensive additions. These include bespoke teak detailing, upgraded appliances, top-of-the-line electronics, and safety systems. This vessel truly reflects the owner’s refined taste and attention to detail.”

The owner selected the Ferretti Yachts 580 after owning a range of smaller vessels, with a growing family among key reasons for the upgrade to the spacious flybridge motor yacht.

“The owner is an avid boating enthusiast with a keen appreciation for family time on the water,” Kanison said. “He progressed through an impressive range of  smaller vessels, and decided to upgrade to the Ferretti Yachts 580 as the family grew, representing the culmination of his passion. The yacht’s spacious layout and luxurious finish offer an ideal setting to create lasting memories with loved ones.”

Owned by Nie Hua and skippered by Jono Rankine, the TP52 Happy Go became the first yacht to win the Rolex China Sea Race ‘double’ of line honours and IRC Overall since Neil Pryde’s HiFi in 2010.

A year after making its Rolex China Sea Race debut, Happy Go beat Ernesto Echauz’s Standard Insurance Centennial V – a Reichel/Pugh 75 that won line honours last year – by just five minutes to win line honours in the 565nm epic after arriving in Subic Bay at 5.20am on March 30.

With a corrected time of 2 days 18 hours 0 minutes 53 seconds, Happy Go was confirmed as the IRC Overall winner once none of the other IRC boats competing could beat her time. William Liu’s Seawolf claimed second in IRC Overall, while Happy Go, Seawolf and Standard Insurance Centennial V came first, second and third respectively in IRC Racer 0.

Nie Hua celebrated with his crew and his wife and kids as he lifted both the China Sea Trophy and Sunday Telegraph Trophy at the prizegiving ceremony, where he was also presented with two Rolex timepieces for winning both line honours and IRC Overall.

“We made a lot of preparations ahead of the race, but getting line honours and the IRC Overall title is completely beyond my expectations,” the Happy Go owner said. “I’d like to give a huge applause to the crew. I’m absolutely thrilled and so thankful. We had a great team. Although we had some language barriers, we operated well, so a big thank you to the team.”

After shaving more than 20 hours off Happy Go’s elapsed time from 2023, Rankine was also full of praise for the crew, which included Australian Luke Payne, who sails for Denmark in SailGP.

“I’m very proud of how the team came together,” said Hong Kong-based Rankine. “It’s a relatively new team and everyone did a fantastic job and there were no egos on the boat, and everyone was helping each other and doing a really good job. It was really satisfying to see.”

Rankine outlined how the line honours tussle became a two-boat battle, with the TP52 and 75ft Reichel/Pugh exchanging the lead on multiple occasions since leaving Hong Kong.

“The battle with Centennial V was close the whole race,” he said. “We were aware of them the whole way. We were always checking to see who was close to the finish line and at the end we could see them right the way through, firstly on AIS and seeing their lights at night.”

“It was exciting and there were a few lead changes. One moment they were ahead, another moment we were ahead and then the next moment we were sitting in a wind hole and not moving, and they were ghosting past us. Yeah, it was exciting and a fun way to win the race.”

The skipper also confirmed that one of the biggest tactical decisions was made ahead of the race when they dropped four people from the line-up to reduce the crew to nine, with the aim of lightening the boat ahead of expected light winds. “We were expecting the race to be a lot longer but we knew it was going to be light winds and not super demanding so we knew we could handle it with nine people.”

After Standard Insurance Centennial V arrived in Subic Bay, Echauz visited Happy Go to congratulate the winners on their victory after what he described as the “most exciting Rolex China Sea Race I’ve ever experienced”.

“It was so exciting from the start on the first day and all the way up to the finish,” said ‘Judes’, one of Asia’s most successful big-boat skippers. “Happy Go did very well. What was so nice was that we were competing with each other, especially on the last day up to the end. I’m very proud of my team.”

Held since 1962, the Rolex China Sea Race is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Rolex has been a partner of the Club since 2007 and title sponsor of its flagship race since 2008.

This year’s Singapore Yachting Festival at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove from April 25-28 could feature about 70 yachts, according to the show’s new owner, ONE°15 Events Management. The four-day show will be preceded by the ICOMIA Boating Industry Conference (April 23-24) followed by the YACHT STYLE Awards gala dinner on the Wednesday evening (April 24), with both events also held at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove.

A subsidiary of SUTL Enterprise – owner of the ONE°15 Marina brand – ONE°15 Events Management is organising the four-day Singapore Yachting Festival and has engaged Wade Pearce of SG Marine Guide as an event consultant.

As well as an increase in yachts on the water, a notable addition to this year’s show is a ‘Lifestyle Festival’ market on land featuring pop-up F&B stalls, carnival activities, live music, roving entertainment and much more.

Arthur Tay, SUTL Enterprise’s CEO and Executive Director, said: “ONE°15’s acquisition of the Singapore Yachting Festival signifies a transformative journey towards elevating our brand influence in the marine industry. SYF positions Singapore prominently on the global yachting calendar, reinforcing our marina’s standing as a premier destination. Most importantly, it drives substantial economic benefits for the local marine industry and government stakeholders.”

Shipyards, design studios, sailing schools, marinas, retail businesses and offices are openly invited to join, creating a specific event or registering an existing one from their calendar under the World Boating Day banner.

The events are freely tailored by each participant to their target audiences, from public openings or collaboration with universities, to more private and exclusive events. The Superyacht Life Foundation actively manages all PR movements from the campaign.

The models available under the three-year agreement include the X47 Express Cruiser, the VF23AZ from the Zarpa series, and various models within the EX/VX line including the VX28BH, VX30B, EX33HT, EX34.FB and VX38B.

Boum Senous, founder and CEO of Yacht Sourcing, said: “We’re incredibly excited to partner with Yanmar and bring their exceptional yachts to Indonesia. Yanmar’s commitment to innovation, performance and quality aligns perfectly with our values. This partnership allows us to offer our customers a wider selection of best-in-class yachts to suit their specific needs and desires.”

Through this collaboration, Yacht Sourcing will offer sales, service and support for Yanmar’s yachts across the archipelago of 17,000 islands.

“Yacht Sourcing’s team of skilled and passionate professionals will provide a hassle-free ownership experience, right from choosing the yacht to keeping up with its maintenance and after-sales support,” Senous said. “Indonesian yachting enthusiasts can now explore the vast potential of their magnificent coastline with the confidence and comfort that comes with owning a Yanmar yacht.”
