Wally’s newest sailing yacht makes racing debut

SHARE

The first wallyrocket71, named Django and owned by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, has kicked off its racing calendar, which includes this year’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

Wally’s first wallyrocket71, Django, made its competitive debut at the Loro Piana Giraglia in Italy in June. Like the first wallyrocket51, the wallyrocket71 is owned by Italian financier Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, with Vasco Vascotto (tactician) and Guillermo Parada (strategist) among the yacht’s all-star crew.

Also like its smaller sister, the 21.4m sailing yacht features a hull design by Botin Partners, the naval architecture firm based in Santander on Spain’s north coast. While the wallyrocket51 was conceived as a one-design class competing with the likes of the TP52s, the wallyrocket71 was created to compete with the Maxi 72s, and was built at the King Marine shipyard in Valencia.

Django, sailing yacht, racing yacht, performance yacht, Wally, Wallyrocket71, Ferretti Group, regatta, King Marine, Botin Partners, Loro Piana Giraglia

Parada, the Argentine strategist, said: “The wallyrocket71 project started with the goal of competing against the 72-footers in the Maxi Worlds. We developed a boat about three tonnes lighter than our main competitors while maintaining similar power and sail area.”

Due to the wallyrocket71’s reduced weight of about 12 tonnes, the bulb keel can be smaller and the rig marginally shorter. This has helped create a twin-rudder boat “just as nimble as its competitors, but quicker in light airs and in response to a gust”, according to Wally.

Only the water ballast is heavier than its competitors, by about 35 per cent. Systems are such that the full 2,700 litres (2.7 tonnes) of water can be pumped from one side to the other in around six seconds, meaning the boat can tack short and fast.

Designed with 305sqm of upwind sail area and 630sqm downwind, the yacht was hitting its expected upwind speeds of 10.5-11 knots in sail trials and managing to match or even exceed wind speed going down.

Vascotto, a 28-time world champion and the yacht’s tactician, said: “After the experience with the wallyrocket51, sailing Django is truly exciting. I’m really impressed by both the construction quality and performance. The future for this kind of yacht looks brighter and brighter.”

The wallyrocket71’s schedule this year includes the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo (September 7-13) and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (September 27-October 5).

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, which acquired Wally in 2019, concluded: With the wallyrocket71, Wally sets sail into an exciting new chapter in competitive yacht racing, launching a vessel designed to be one of the fastest in its class. The yacht is a statement of intent, a leap forward that underscores our deep-rooted commitment to innovation, performance and design excellence.

“As the old saying goes, the pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the winners adjust the sails. With wallyrocket71, Wally doesn’t just adjust the sails – it changes the race.”

The French builder has collaborated with Seascape to launch the SE edition, described as “a thoroughbred IRC racer” and “arguably the fastest, most fun 36ft production boat”.

Beneteau has collaborated with Seascape in Slovenia to launch the First 36 SE planing racer. Samuel Manuard, who handled the naval architecture of the First 36, collaborated with Bernard Nivelt to evolve the platform into what Beneteau has described as “a thoroughbred IRC racer”.

To ensure optimal performance under ORC, Maurizio Cossutti was brought in to add his extensive rating-rule expertise into the mix. Despite reducing displacement by 400kg compared to the standard First 36, the First 36 SE test ORC certificate shows an improved APH of around 520 fully crewed, or APH around 530 for double-handed teams.

New Zealand’s Pure Design & Engineering – which has worked on America’s Cup yachts – oversaw structural engineering, Sito studio worked on interiors, while the yacht retained much of Lorenzo Argento’s exterior design.

As well as a lower displacement, a new bow knuckle design was introduced to shorten the waterline and decrease the wetted surface by as much as 3sqm for improved acceleration and higher speeds.

The designers refined the cockpit ergonomics by replacing twin helms with a responsive tiller, while features include flush racing valves, an e-bar to fine-tune tiller angle adjustment, plus a carbon rig to further enhance performance. Soft foam deck grip has also been added throughout the cockpit.

“I can confidently say First 36SE is a racing boat,” Manuard said following test sails. “You really feel the 10 per cent less displacement compared to the First 36.”

The renowned designer also described the boat as “very responsive to the helm” with an “excellent” steering position and ergonomics. “You can spend hours racing and you won’t feel destroyed afterwards, which says a lot,” he said. “She will be pretty efficient in double-handed racing as well as fully crewed racing, because you have room to manoeuvre and accommodate the whole team.”

Lorenzo Argento, the exterior designer who has sailed over 6,000nm on his own First 36, was also among those to test the SE version. “The wind was shifting, but I was truly surprised by the acceleration and the level of control. The tiller gives you a much closer, more direct feel,” Argento stated.

“The SE version is lighter, cleaner and designed to fully unleash the boat’s planing potential, which you can really feel. Personally, I’d still choose the cruising version because it suits my needs better, but if I had ambitions in racing, I would go with this one.”

Beneteau, Seascape First 36, First 36SE, planing racer, raceboat, racing sailboat, sailboat, Bernard Nivelt, Samuel Manuard, Lorenzo Argento, Maurizio Cossutti, Pure Design & Engineering, Sito Design, America’s Cup

Inside, the cruising amenities of the First 36 model – including two cabins and a day head – are present, but the overall design has been enhanced with a more lightweight execution for the SE edition.

Andraž Mihelin, Seascape’s CEO, concluded: “The First 36 SE was designed to provide an unparalleled connection to the ancient art of sailing. Every element has been fine-tuned to transform wind into pure sailing joy, and after sailing her, this is precisely what she does.

“Compared to the First 36, she is more responsive, more precise, reacts quicker in light sticky conditions, and starts planing in as little as 12 knots true wind speed. I’m now convinced she is arguably the fastest and most fun 36ft production boat on the market.”

Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, at Yacht Style Awards 2025

Having led the Global Order Book for 24m-plus superyacht orders for 25 successive years, how does the Azimut-Benetti Group currently stand financially?

We have a good portfolio of orders and a strong backlog, of about €2 billion. The global market is not as good as it was a few years ago, but there’s still a lot of action. The global landscape is evolving rapidly, and we are closely monitoring how developments such as tariff policies in the US may influence the market.

We had great results from the last US shows in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach, and my concern is not on the strong affinity that American owners continue to show for our brand and products but on the whole market in case clients adopt a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude. Once again, our strategic choice to ensure a balanced presence across all key markets has proven to be a forward-looking decision.

How are Azimut designs evolving with Alberto Mancini, who now handles the exteriors of four of the brand’s series?

Alberto was the right person to succeed Stefano Righini and provide continuity for the Fly (flybridge), S (sportbridge) and Grande (superyacht) models. He’s also doing the new Seadeck Series. His latest designs include the Grande 44M, which will be Azimut’s new flagship. Alberto has a gifted touch and the ability to interpret different styles with solutions driven by pure creativity.

Leaders-Azimut-Benetti-CEO-Marco-Valle

Alberto Mancini designed Azimut’s upcoming Grande 44M

Mancini’s recent designs include Azimut’s upcoming Grande 30M, with the first hull sold to Hong Kong by Marine Italia. How is the Asia market developing?

We have a great distribution network across Asia, so we’re quite satisfied, but we’re also convinced there’s still untapped potential to be unlocked. The Asia market has been quiet for a while, and this may well be the right moment to further strengthen our presence in the region.

This is especially relevant considering that we’ve recently sold several Grande superyachts into Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, mainland China and Japan. We had a Grande 32M delivered to Vietnam earlier this year, we’ve sold a couple of other Grande superyachts to China, so superyacht sales are encouraging but the flybridge models have slowed down a little.

So, Azimut-Benetti is making a conscious effort to step up activity in Asia?

In the past three decades, I’ve travelled many times to Asia including right across China. My first trip to Asia with Azimut was in 1996, with the Sales Director at the time, and we visited Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Leaders-Azimut-Benetti-CEO-Marco-Valle

The first Azimut Grande 30M has been sold to Asia

The potential in Asia is high, but the challenge lies in finding a way to unlock its full promise, no easy task in such a vast region that encompasses a wide range of cultures and includes a lot of very different markets, from China to Singapore, which right now is growing faster than Hong Kong.

There are also exciting new markets like Vietnam. Our investment in Asia is driven by the goal of further energising the market, tapping into regions that are growing as yachting destinations and embracing a new generation of young owners.

Are you surprised by the traction in Asia for the new Magellano models?

We’ve sold a couple of Magellano 30M, which again shows the demand for the larger models in Asia.

Have the new Seadeck 6 and 7 motoryachts that debuted in 2024 achieved what you hoped?

With the Seadeck Series, the idea was to truly create something that stands apart from what’s available on the market in terms of lifestyle, design and technology, by offering a compelling counterpart to flybridge or sportbridge models.

Leaders-Azimut-Benetti-CEO-Marco-Valle

Seadeck 7 features Volvo Penta’s first hybrid IPS package

This is the reason why the Seadeck 7 (71ft 2in LOA) includes the first helm-to-propeller hybrid-electric package by Volvo Penta, which is unique. This system was included on hull one and is still being developed by Volvo Penta.

It has been a big investment, but we believe in the Seadeck design and the results in the market have been better than we expected. The Seadeck 6 had a great reaction. We were worried that the size (56ft 7in LOA) was maybe too small for this kind of boat, but it proved that it wasn’t. The Seadeck 9 (84ft) is the next model in the Series and could debut at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival.

Designed for a slow pace of life at sea, the Seadeck concept appeared to be a change in direction for Azimut. Has it helped attract new clients?

This is a good point. The idea with Seadeck was to build something different. However, the new models are not only satisfying our clients but also attracting different kinds of customers who would never otherwise have been interested in Azimut. We had some external clients who saw the Seadeck and said they liked it but had never previously approached us.

Leaders-Azimut-Benetti-CEO-Marco-Valle

Azimut’s Seadeck 6 introduced the ‘fun island’ concept

Some of the Seadeck models have been bought as a second boat – like a day boat or family boat – by owners of megayachts. Sales have mainly focused on Europe so far, as the models are only starting to enter new markets around the world.

The Seadeck 6 appeared in America late last year and the Seadeck 7 had its US debut at this year’s Palm Beach show in March. The Seadeck 7 then had its Asia-Pacific premiere at the Singapore Yachting Festival this April. I look forward to seeing the reaction in these markets as these boats are attracting a new kind of client.

What has been the reaction when people have first boarded the Seadeck models?

The first feeling is that it’s not a conventional boat. People realise that you use the side balconies from a different perspective. It’s like having the external area of an express boat but without comprising the interior space and volume.

When you go boating these days, people are less formal. Everybody is more relaxed on board, so we wanted to transfer this attitude to the Seadeck. Even if you compare the lobbies of hotels, they’re now much relaxed compared to 20 years ago and more like a lounge. We’re trying to match this attitude that people are looking for now. You don’t need a formal area in this type of boat.

Seadeck 6 interior by Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez

Why did Azimut choose to work with Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez on the Seadeck interiors?

We were looking for somebody who understood the meaning of the boat, what we were looking to do. We invested a lot in the hybrid system, reducing the consumption, and the materials used in the boat, so when we looked for interior designers who could match this philosophy, we thought about Thun and Rodriguez because they’ve had a long-standing approach to sustainability. The selection of materials in the décor is in line with this philosophy.

We did our research and Azimut has enjoyed collaborating with designers who haven’t worked in yachting before, to differentiate ourselves. This was also the case when we had Achille Salvagni design interiors for so many years. This is our attitude, otherwise you’re always limited by the perimeter of yacht designers.

What led Azimut to work for the first time with m2atelier (Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic), on the Grande 30M?

They’re nice, they’re professional, and we like how they design the interior as a functional tool for the owner. Sometimes you have an interior designer who wants to create a showroom, which is nice to look at but not so user-friendly, but m2atelier focuses on how owners and guests use a boat. They’re more pragmatic, which I like.

Leaders-Azimut-Benetti-CEO-Marco-Valle

M2atelier designed the interiors of Azimut’s Grande 30M

The Grande 30M includes the Deck2Deck Terrace and Infinity Skydeck features, which were introduced on the Grande 26M and ‘semi-walkaround’ Grande 36M respectively. Can you also outline the Grande 30M’s propulsion technology?

We’re including the pod system. Azimut wanted a pod system that could be used across series production of bigger boats and not just on custom superyachts. On the Grande 26M [which debuted in 2022], we introduced the new Pod 4600 propulsion system in partnership with ZF.

On the Grande 30M, we begin our new partnership with Rolls-Royce and are integrating MTU diesel engines with integrated MTU propulsion systems as part of its ‘From Bridge to Propeller’ strategy. The new Grande models will be equipped with MTU’s Series 2000 engines, ZF pod drives and MTU’s NautIQ Master integrated platform management system. It’s much more efficient to work with one supplier who can manage the entire propulsion system.

Earlier this year, Benetti stated it had 10 hybrid superyachts under construction and that seven of the 13 orders for B.Yond superyachts included hybrid technology. Is demand for eco-friendly technology growing?

Yes. Basically, about 50 per cent of B.Yond orders are for hybrid. We also have orders for much bigger boats, from about 60-67m. Benetti can offer hybrid systems for almost all its models and can sometimes even do full electric.

Benetti’s Kasper 7 won the Superyacht 60-70m category at this year’s Yacht Style Awards

Our hybrid systems are proven. It’s much easier to include a hybrid system on the bigger yachts than it is on the smaller ones because of the size of the batteries. Whenever you have 40m, 50m or 60m-plus yachts, it’s easy to have a hybrid system because it’s just a question of having the space for a battery pack on board. It’s much more of a challenge on smaller boats when there’s less space compared to the size of battery pack needed.

What has been the response to HVOlution, the biofuel that Azimut successfully debuted on the first Magellano 60 in 2023?

This was simply the first model we used bio-fuel in, but we propose and can use HVO on all our models. All our tests were done with HVO and today we have fully transitioned from traditional fossil fuels to HVO biofuel – specifically HVOlution by Eni Live, which can reduce GHG emissions by up to 90 per cent – for sea trials, technical transfers and final refuelling prior to delivery to owners.

HVOlution has a different density to diesel but all our new engines can be operated with biofuel. You can even mix them. However, currently we can only provide HVOlution in Italy. If we could make this available everywhere, it would be an easy solution to reducing emissions, but not the least expensive, as distribution costs depend on taxes and restrictions country by country.

Valle with Azimut-Benetti colleagues at Yacht Style Awards 2025

Azimut says over half of its models are Low Emission Yachts, which it defines as those with 20-30 per cent fewer emissions than the market average. How do you achieve this?

Whenever we do a new product, we decide on the level of consumption of the boat. We then achieve the target with the choice of engines or propulsion system, the amount of carbon-fibre used to reduce weight, and the shape of the hull, or a combination.

In 2023, to help the market, we commissioned Lloyd’s Register to develop a carbon-emission index for sub-24m yachts, like the SEA Index rating available for 24m-plus yachts. We’ve adopted this since last year, so each Azimut yacht has an official rating from Lloyd’s Register, although this system has not been used by other shipyards.

This kind of rating is on almost all products today, from houses to electrical appliances, but not in this industry. We decided to do it in the hope that others would follow, but I think the only way it will happen is if the clients start to ask for it or demand it. And this could increasingly happen if there’s a financial incentive for the purchase of more environmentally friendly products, as with cars.

Valle addresses the audience at the 25th Benetti Yachtmaster in Marrakesh in February 2025

Since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) acquired a 33 per cent of Azimut-Benetti Group in 2023, has it played an active role?

They have proven to be the perfect investor. They wanted to understand the industry and help the Group develop new businesses in Middle East. The Middle East is growing, and to have a partner like this, with local presence, is a strategic move. We will be more and more present in the future.

Finally, could you tell us what the late Paolo Vitelli meant to you, having worked under him for almost three decades since you joined Azimut in 1996?

Joining the sales team at Azimut was my first job in the yachting industry, and my last interview before I was hired was with him. When I started, Azimut was a relatively small company, and it grew by about 25 per cent each year into the 2000s.

Valle worked with Paolo Vitelli for 29 years

Being a sales person, he always wanted to be present in the market. He travelled a lot, and I often travelled with him and others. He was able to travel to Asia, complete a deal and fly back to Italy on the same day – he was unstoppable. He was very charming, very intuitive, able to understand any situation immediately, and always knew exactly what was happening in any negotiations.

Working for him was always challenging as he was never 100 per cent satisfied. He challenged me from the beginning, even in my [job] interview. He knew he was always looking at the glass as half-empty. Everything was “good-bad” – that was a typical phrase of his.

He always pushed his stakeholders to raise the bar and go beyond their limits. He was a driven innovator, working every day and night. It is this spirit that has made Azimut-Benetti the world’s leading Group in the yachting industry.

The French sailing catamaran brand has announced a collaboration with Fairview Yachting, a newly formed dealership.

Bali Catamarans has appointed Fairview Yachting, led by Richard Allen and Andy Byham, as its official dealer in Thailand and Hong Kong.

Bali’s portfolio of sailing catamarans from 38-58ft starts from the Catsmart and Catspace models, and includes the 4.2, 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8. The French brand’s 50ft-plus models include the 5.4 and flagship 5.8 – a world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival – while the 5.2 is among upcoming models.

Founded in 2014 by Catana Group, Bali quickly established itself as a major player in the sailing catamaran market due to its lifting, garage-style ‘Bali door’ and Open Space design concept, while other popular features include a solid foredeck, forward door, opening side windows and oversize fridge-freezers.

Boris Compagnon, Bali’s Sales Director, said: “Having Fairview Yachting as the official distributor for Thailand and Hong Kong is a key asset for sales and charter development in the region, as their expertise, know-how and taste for excellence reflect the Bali Catamarans DNA and core values.”

Headquartered in Phuket, Fairview Yachting states that it “offers a full suite of services including yacht sales, luxury yacht charter, charter management and ownership programmes”. Allen, formerly COO of Simpson Marine, and Byham both have decades of experience in the yachting industry.

Allen, Director of Fairview Yachting, said: “We are thrilled to bring Bali Catamarans to sailors in Thailand and Hong Kong. We have an abundance of incredible cruising areas perfect for catamaran sailing here in Southeast Asia and are proud to become official dealers for Bali, a brand whose innovative style aligns with our own.”

CRN has announced that the hull and superstructure carpentry have been completed on the 70m Project Thunderball, which is currently under construction at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona. Following confirmation of the construction milestone, the Italian builder stated that the full-custom steel and aluminium superyacht is on track for its scheduled launch and delivery in 2026.

According to the shipyard, Project Thunderball “is progressing with remarkable speed”, with the installation of metal decorative components nearly completed and insulation work in the main saloon and wheelhouse finished. CRN also reported that the design and fabrication of the wooden exterior fixtures are “in full swing”.

The next steps include the finishing of the first fully-furnished guest cabin interiors by July, followed by the completion of the fairing phase by the end of summer, and the commencement of hull painting in September 2025.

CRN and the Ferretti Group Superyachts Division collaborated with Dutch studio Vripack on the yacht’s naval architecture and exterior design, while Italian studio Nauta Design has styled the interiors. Brokerage company Y.CO is also involved as the owner’s representative on the project.

CRN has described the yacht’s exterior as featuring a “classic elongated bow, a sleek profile and graceful, sailboat-inspired lines, complemented by gently curved bilges and a seamless surface”. The interiors are characterised by “timeless details” that reflect a “deep connection to maritime culture”, according to the shipyard.

Spread over five decks, the 1,100GT project will have a beam of 11m and accommodate up to 12 guests in an owner’s suite and five VIP cabins. There will also be nine cabins for 15 crew.

Project Thunderball will be powered by MAN V12-1213kW engines and will be able to reach a top speed of 16 knots. The superyacht has also been designed with sustainability in mind, equipped with what CRN has described as a “peak shaving system” to help reduce fuel consumption and optimise energy efficiency on board, as well as also offering a silent mode at anchor.

CRN recent delivered the 67m Amor À Vida and is working on at least two more superyacht projects alongside the 70m Project Thunderball.

The latest Amels 60 superyacht has been delivered and named Memories. The name was unveiled during a private ceremony at Damen Yachting’s main Amels facility in Vlissingen in southwest Netherlands. The event was attended by the owner and the crew of Memories.

Moran Yacht & Ship oversaw the introduction of the owner, who purchased the 60m in-build project just six months ago. The brokerage house will also manage the charter programme for Memories, the first Amels new build to feature interiors by London-based studio Harrison Eidsgaard.

Joppe Osté, the yacht’s Project Manager, said: “When the owner stepped in, we were already at an advanced stage of construction. The advantage of this was that the owner was able to make decisions quickly and take possession of it before the start of summer. The custom interiors by Harrison Eidsgaard appealed to the owner, which allowed us to stay on schedule.”

Memories is a product of Amels’ Limited Editions concept, which combines the efficient build times of series models with optional customisations. Like all Amels 60 units, Memories’ exterior was penned by Norweigan designer Espen Øino and features sleek lines and distinctive geometric windows.

Despite the limited timeframe, the owner was still able to make several customisations including changes to the beach club, owner’s areas and sun deck, where a large sofa with a TV that drops down from the ceiling replaced a dining table and a bar. The aft bridge deck was adapted from a lounge area with a TV and games table into an on-deck cinema setup.

For the interior, Harrison Eidsgaard focused on using natural materials in a contemporary, beach house style. The 853GT superyacht features an eye-catching spiral staircase connecting her multiple decks and accommodation for up to 12 guests and 12 crew.

Ben Harrison, co-founder of Harrison Eidsgaard, said: “It has been an absolute delight working on this superyacht and a great collaboration with all partners involved. Memories is our first Amels Limited Editions interior and brings a new look and feel to this successful 60m design.”

Memories has already begun her journey to Ibiza, where she will begin her first charter season managed by Moran Yacht & Ship.

Rory Moran, a Broker at Moran Yacht & Ship, said: “The construction of a yacht is a remarkable journey of craftsmanship and innovation. The delivery of this vessel to its owner marks the culmination of dedicated teamwork, meticulous attention to detail, and a shared passion for excellence. More than just a yacht, this is a vision realised.”

Asia Yachting showed models from Leopard, Oceania, Galeon, Absolute and Prestige

The three-day Asia Yachting Brokerage Boat Show in Hong Kong concluded on June 8, with the dealership announcing it “received offers” on both a reduced-price Prestige 680 (2020) and an Absolute 60 Fly (2022), the two biggest yachts among the five on display at Club Marina Cove.

Absolute’s 60 Fly is the second-largest model in the Italian builder’s Flybridge line, while the Prestige 680 is the former flagship of the French brand’s F-Line of flybridge motoryachts.

Offers were made on the Absolute 60 Fly and Prestige 680

Prior to the Sai Kung show, the asking price of the Prestige 680 had been reduced from €1.7 million to €1.35 million, making it “one of the most competitively priced second-hand 65ft-plus motoryachts in Asia-Pacific launched after 2020”, according to Asia Yachting.

The show’s varied line-up also included a Galeon 400 Fly (2022) flybridge motoryacht with drop-down sides, an Oceania 45WA cruiser (2023), and a Leopard 48 sailing catamaran launched in 2016.

Beautiful weather contributed to a positive experience for visitors over the three days, with Asia Yachting announcing that the show attracted a solid turnout of yacht enthusiasts and serious buyers interested in high-quality second-hand yachts.

Kelly Yeung, Asia Yachting’s Senior Marketing Manager, stated: “We had a strong start to the summer, so I was confident this show would be a success. Seeing the positive turnout, positive leads and offers made, I’m thrilled to say the show lived up to expectations.”

The French catamaran builder has widened its offerings with a pastel-themed Iconic edition featuring a new-look bow lounge with retractable swim ladder.

Lagoon 46 Iconic

Lagoon has revealed imagery of the Iconic editions of the Lagoon 46 and 51 sailing catamarans, models that can both feature up to 12 berths. The Iconic option includes interior designs outfitted with ‘vibrant and pastel’ upholstery inspired by retro designs attributed to the 1980s.

The Iconic editions also include a new bow lounge with an increased number of sunpads, plus a new drop-down swim ladder below the nets, offering an exciting new way to enter and come out of the water. According to the yard, the new models are “a strong testament of the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation”.

The Iconic foredeck (shown above on Lagoon 46) includes a drop-down ladder (shown below on Lagoon 51)

Both the Lagoon 46 and 51 Iconic models also offer the option of a furling boom. This system, which has been offered by Lagoon since 2023, is designed to enhance visibility during the sailing experience.

With the furling mandrel not enclosed in a housing, those on board can easily observe and control hoisting, reefing and furling manoeuvres with increased precision. Reducing the overall size of the system also reduces the risk of potential damage when gybing.

The Iconic editions feature vibrant pastel interiors

Aside from new models, the yard has also shown examples of its Neo refit programme, which was created to extend the life of Lagoon catamarans. Taking less than six months for each vessel to pass through the programme at the brand’s Bordeaux shipyard, the new refit service ensures older models receive a new lease of life with materials and software updated to the industry’s latest standards.

There are three refit package options to choose from, with amendments ranging from interior refreshes and hull repaints to the installation of lithium batteries and solar panels to help reduce the yacht’s environmental footprint.

Lagoon stated that the Neo Line reflects the brand’s “commitment to environment and quick response to customers’ real needs”. A Lagoon 620 from 2012 was the first yacht from the brand’s 7,000-plus launches since 1984 to have completed a Neo refit.

Codecasa 56m My Legacy

Burgess is celebrating a significant surge in sales, with the global brokerage house announcing the close of seven deals in a two-week period in May 2025. The transactions in this short period totalled €303.6 million, with an average asking price of about €43.4 million.

Jonathan Beckett, the Burgess CEO, stated: “We’re enormously proud of our collaborative team for seeing each of these transactions through from start to finish. Yet again, we have underscored the power of our global networks where knowledge, insights, data and contacts are shared seamlessly among our directly employed brokers.”

One, the 76m Feadship, was the biggest of the sales in the frenetic two weeks and had a last asking price of €172.5 million, representing more than half the value of the sales during this period. Other transactions included Alloy Yachts’ 56m sailing ketch Salvaje and the 56m Codecasa My Legacy, both transacted with Burgess representing the seller.

Burgess stated that another superyacht in the 50-60m range, built by a northern European shipyard, was confidentially sold by a Burgess broker in an off-market transaction. The seven transactions also included three sub-50m builds: the 45m Delta Marine Gran Finale, 38m Sodan and 33m Maria Theresa, a Custom Line 120’ and Navetta 33 respectively.

In the four weeks beforehand, Burgess had closed deals on two Damen Yachting vessels, representing the seller of the 80m explorer-style U-81 and bringing in the buyer of the Yacht Support 53 Five Oceans, which had been delivered to her original owner in 2024.

The recent sales boom made space for Burgess to welcome new listings in June including the 85m Lürssen Gigia – with an asking price of €169 million – and 60m Scott Free, asking €43.5 million. The largest vessel in Burgess’ sales fleet is currently the 123m Lürssen Golden Odyssey.

This year, Burgess is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its Asia operation headed by Singapore-based Jean-Marc Poullet.

Described by her builders as “a milestone in superyacht evolution”, they further assert: “Evolution is not just about change; it is about perfecting what defines us. The Amels 80 is the result of deep-rooted expertise, blending time-honoured traditions with modern innovation”.

Exterior design of both the Amels 60 and Amels 80 is by one of the world’s most sought-after stylists, Norwegian Espen Øino, who calls the Amels 80 “a significant step forward in yacht design. It is a harmonious blend of form and function, designed to offer an exceptional experience on the water with refined elegance”.

Fittingly this first sale was handled by Burgess, an industry leader since the 1970s, just six months after introduction of the new design in 2022. Note that after her launch and sea trials, delivery is taking place in July 2025, a remarkable build period for an 80m vessel, made possible by the Amels Limited Editions concept.

Interiors are by Amels and internationally-known Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design. Says their Paul Costerus: “This is the first collaboration between Sinot and Amels. The project provided us with the opportunity to develop something truly unique. You will feel at home from the moment you step on board.”

Essentially the Amels 80 offers a sundeck, beach club, 6.5m swimming pool, owner’s deck, seven suites, helipad, tenders and hybrid propulsion.

The latter, notes Amels parent Damen Yachting, “enables reduced emissions, quieter operations and greater cruising efficiency. This is yachting with a conscience, combining the best of proven technology and forward-looking innovations that will endure into the future”.

The beach club comes with spa, sauna, gym, hammam and massage room, underscoring a focus on wellness and relaxation. Supported by a crew of 21, the vessel has a gross tonnage of 2,175GT, and “has been built to venture across oceans, inspire generations and withstand the tests of time”.

In Yacht Style’s annual feature Top 100 Superyachts of Indo-Asia-Pacific, Amels Limited Editions and Amels Full Custom Yachts, together with Damen Yachting’s luxury Xplorer yachts and Yacht Support vessels, have been the most prolific for the last three editions, indicating a propensity for varied-but-safe voyaging in these far flung waters.

So far, four Amels 80s have been sold, and two more will be delivered in 2026. Seven Amels 60s have also been purchased since the new wave of Øino designs were released, the last one also due for delivery this year. Other recent launches and deliveries include a large refit just announced, an Xplorer 60 and a Yacht Support 53.

Damen Yachting and Amels are located at Vlissingen, on the North Sea Coast near the Dutch-Belgian border.

The Amels Limited Editions idea was launched at Monaco in 2005. In the construction of superyachts, two years is needed for naval architecture, exterior design, hull construction and all the fittings and fixtures, cables and conduits, that go into the finished product. Then custom features take another two years.

What if, speculated the Amels people, a client could buy his or her superyacht with only two years to go? Damen Shipping, an international maritime conglomerate which owns both Damen Yachting and Amels, has annual revenues of about US$2.5 billion, and could finance such construction.

This used to be called “building on spec”, but now a whole new contractual premise was possible, in which the owner came in at the custom stage, waited only half as long for delivery, and enjoyed savings through sharing some design and build costs with others.

Briton Tim Heywood was chosen as the exterior designer, and Laura Sessa did many of the interiors, although owners could employ whoever they wanted, and did so. A few also asked Heywood to tweak his exteriors here and there, so that although technically identical, various Amels Limited Editions of the same LOA have noticeably different profiles.

LOAs ranged from 177-272ft, or 54-83m, with nearly a dozen lengths in between. Most popular was the 55m or 180ft model, of which an astonishing 25 were sold. Many of them have plied Asia-Pacific waters. Amels Limited Editions was obviously a runaway success.

Although the focus has now shifted to the Øino-designed Amels 60 and Amels 80, Damen Yachting Marketing Director Sarah Flavell tells us that Heywood Amels 200s or 220s, for example, can still be built, but not within the Limited Editions format, which has moved on.

Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting, sums up: “With the launch of the first Amels 80, we have reached another landmark achievement in the history of Amels. I would like to thank our client and the team at Burgess for entrusting us with this very special build. We are honoured and excited to see the final phase through to delivery.”
