Engaging NGOs and all players; and Engaging citizens and boaters. Held in Hall 10 and free for all show visitors, the forum has strong support from the yachting industry, with Groupe Beneteau as Performance Partner, Sanlorenzo as Project Partner, and Pool Partners including Azimut, Bavaria, Brunswick, D-Marin, ePropulsion, Fabiani, Greenline, Princess, Sunreef and Torqeedo.

Petros Michelidakis, Director of Boot Dusseldorf, said: “We are the world’s largest watersports trade fair and therefore very suitable as a platform. We have both B2C and B2B visitors and all major boatbuilders and shipyards are here.

“The whole cross-section of topics will be addressed. Do e-fuels make sense? How suitable is hydrogen as a fuel? How can marinas be digitalised faster? Can we involve water sportspeople to protect endangered regions? How will we be boating in 30 years from now? Now is the time to chart the course for the future.”

A great year starts with a good toast, and here are 5 to pick from this Chinese New Year.

For Chinese all over the world, the upcoming Spring Festival or Chinese New Year is a massive affair that will see one of the largest human migrations and the highest consumption of food and drinks. Undoubtedly, alcohol ranks near the top of the list and comprises spirits like whisky, gin and cognac. From the Macallan to Glenfiddich and Royal Salute, say “Cheers!” to the new year with these exquisite drinks.

The Macallan: A Night On Earth in Scotland

Inspired by Hogmanay, the traditional Scottish New Year’s Eve celebration, this limited-edition whisky makes a great gift this Lunar New Year as it parallels the universal optimism and joyfulness that binds both festivities together. Packaged in red, a symbol of great fortune, the whisky’s natural warm amber hue also complements the rich colour of its presentation box.

Crafted from a selection of The Macallan’s sherry seasoned American and European oak casks and ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky exudes notes of sweet vanilla, baked apples and baking biscuits on the nose. Taking a sip, the liquid’s soft velvety mouthfeel coats the palate and brings to mind shortbread along with toasted marshmallows, dried oranges, figs and cinnamon. The finish is medium with a lingering sweetness of butterscotch and freshly baked biscuits.

Royal Salute Lunar New Year Special Edition

A main staple at any celebrations, Royal Salute was created in 1953 to rejoice in momentous occasions like the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Continuing this long history, the distiller presents the Royal Salute Lunar New Year Special Edition to “Ignite the New Year”. Featuring a myriad of symbolic motifs like drums, lanterns, and celebratory streamers, the hand-crafted ruby flagon is believed to bring you and your family fortune and prosperity in the year ahead.

The bottle contains Royal Salute’s iconic 21-Year-Old Signature Blend with fruity and floral notes and a hint of sherry spice. The whisky’s sophisticated and opulent character complements flawlessly with its gift box’s design, which was inspired by traditional Chinese painting, literature and historical culture by renowned illustrator and visual designer Trajan Jia.

Rémy Martin Limited Edition Gift Collection

Be it for a night of celebration or as a token of appreciation, Rémy Martin’s limited-edition cognacs are a great way to give a toast to a prosperous new year. Coming in three different iterations: Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Harmonia Limited Edition, Rémy Martin XO Harmonia Limited Edition and Rémy Martin VSOP Harmonia Limited Edition, these exceptional liquids are best tasted in a cocktail. Rémy Martin even has a cocktail shaker to complete the special occasion.

Housed in a red coffret or shimmering gold gift box, the cognacs certainly add to the festivities of the widely celebrated Lunar New Year.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Lunar New Year Limited Edition Design

For the Year of the Rabbit, Johnnie Walker collaborates with Shanghai-based designer Angel Chen to design its presentation box and the bottle itself. Featuring the animated rabbit, which represents mercy, elegance and beauty, the animal also signifies longevity in most Asian cultures and is illustrated by the prancing rabbits along different mountainous peaks.

For this limited-edition collection, Chen drew inspiration from the crafts Jonnie Walker Master Blender Emma Walker and her team bring to the distillery. “My work is often inspired by different generations, different genders and cultures coming together to create something fresh and new. These ideals echo the craft of Johnnie Walker, taking different types of whisky from different distilleries, with differing ages of maturation and blending them together perfectly to create a masterpiece – that is something I can relate to.”

Glenfiddich Chinese New Year Gift Packs

Celebrate Chinese New Year and usher in the Year of the Rabbit with Glenfiddich as the whisky maker has unveiled its annual limited edition gift packs. This year’s edition of the iconic Glenfiddich Stag has been designed by Shanghai-based illustrator Yixin Zeng, who is known for his “vibrant, expressive detailed style of painting”. These special gift packs make a good gifting option to commemorate the occasion.

Each pack comes with a single malt Scotch whisky crafted by Malt Master Brian Kinsman, the Reserva Rum Cask 21-Year-Old. The exceptional spirit is finished in Caribbean rum-soaked casks, which gives the whisky a spicy warm and indulgent vanilla and toffee sweetness. Other variants in 12-, 15- and 18-Year-Old are also available in its corresponding design colour and housed in a beautiful gift box

Brand-new models from Sunseeker, Princess, Azimut, Ferretti Yachts and Jeanneau are among many exciting world premieres at the 52nd edition of Boot Dusseldorf, as the world’s biggest indoor boat show returns for the first time since January 2020.

Three years ago, show organisers announced that over 250,000 visitors attended the nine-day event at Messe Dusseldorf, with about a quarter of the attendees representing over 100 countries outside Germany.

Boot Dusseldorf Director Petros Michelidakis said he was expecting about 1,500 exhibitors at this year’s event, which will again span 16 halls.

“We’re very satisfied with bookings received so far, which will present watersports in their entirety on a huge exhibition area equivalent to 31 football pitches,” Michelidakis said. “There is no other trade fair in the world with such extended ranges and in such an international setting.”

Hall 6, the largest of the 16, is dedicated to the show’s largest yachts (up to 30m). Other halls are dedicated to motorboats (Halls 1, 3, 4), superboats or luxury dayboats (Hall 5), a ‘superyacht show’ (7a), maritime art (7), equipment and accessories (10, 11), diving (12), seaside destinations (13, 14), sailing (15, 16) and surf sports (17).

Sunseeker has one of the largest displays with nine models including a bespoke version of its 95 Yacht, among the show’s largest models, while the 88 Yacht and 90 Ocean models launched in 2021 are the British builder’s other 24m-plus superyachts.

The Poole’s yard’s line-up also includes a 76 Yacht, Predator 65, Manhattan 55 and Manhattan 68, but much of the attention will be on the two world premieres, the all-new Superhawk 55 and the 75 Sport Yacht, an upgraded and extended version of the 74 Sport Yacht.

Andrea Frabetti, CEO at Sunseeker International, said: “Sunseeker returns to Boot Düsseldorf with confidence, flair and the most exciting models in the market today. We’re particularly proud to unveil the new Superhawk 55 and 75 Sport Yacht, which will be the crown jewels of our impressive line-up of stunning yachts.”

Princess also has a long history at the show and is hosting the world premiere of its S72, the second biggest model in the S Class behind the popular S78. The Plymouth builder’s seven-strong line-up also includes the V40 cruiser, F45 flybridge and S62 sportbridge, Boot Dusseldorf debuts for the F65 and X80, and the European premiere of the Y85, further boosting the 24m-plus yacht count.

Fairline is showing its flagship Squadron 68 and the Phantom 65, which both are showing four months after their world premieres at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The Oundle-based builder is also showing the F//Line 33, Targa 45 GT and Targa 50 Open.

Paul Grys, CEO of Fairline, said: “We’re delighted Boot Düsseldorf is back and equally delighted to bring two show debuts to such a key event in the calendar. We’ve had fantastic feedback on the new Squadron 68 and award-winning Phantom 65 since visitors first saw the yachts at Cannes. Rafa Nadal has signed up as a team owner in the UIM E1 World Championship, the world’s first all-electric raceboat championship, set to get underway later this year. Team Mexico, owned by Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez, and Venice Racing Team are also confirmed, with organisers stating they will announce more teams and race venues in the coming months.

Nadal, who has lived on the island of Mallorca his whole life, owns a bespoke 80 Sunreef Power catamaran, Great White, since 2020 (click for interview).

The 22-time Grand Slam champion will also be supporting E1’s Blue Action Programme, which has been designed to create a positive impact on local communities through projects aimed at restoring marine ecosystems along city waterfronts.

“I’m really excited to be getting involved with a project like E1 that values sustainability and will make a positive impact on society, especially in coastal communities,” Nadal said. “I like the fact E1 has a clear mission and is committed to preserving marine ecosystems.”

Professor Carlos Duarte, Chief Scientist at E1, will lead the Blue Action Programme. A renowned marine ecologist, Duarte will play an instrumental role in developing E1’s overall sustainability strategy, as well as supporting the Rafa Nadal Academy’s sustainability initiatives and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable sport.

“I’m delighted to see Rafael Nadal join E1,” said Duarte, who’s also from Mallorca. “I know Rafa shares my passion and commitment for marine conservation, and I’m looking forward to having his support on this important journey to deliver restoration of marine ecosystems at scale.”

Alejandro Agag, E1’s co-founder and Chairman, visited Nadal at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, where he was taken on a tour around the high-performance tennis centre and was impressed by the world-class facilities and how technology is integrated at the academy.

E1 Chairman Alejandro Agag and Nadal sign the contract

The partnership with Nadal and E1 is expected to extend beyond racing to include the launch of an international thought leadership event, focused on the theme of sport and sustainability.

The flagship event will bring leading sustainability experts together at the Rafa Nadal Academy to examine the next level of thinking on sustainability and highlight the positive role that sport can play in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“It’s incredible news to have a name like Rafael Nadal join the UIM E1 World Championship. He’s not only one of the greatest tennis players of all time, he’s also a sporting icon who has transcended his sport,” Agag said.

“Speaking with him, I immediately understood how important sustainability is to him and his passion for the ocean. E1’s mission is to accelerate clean mobility and restore marine ecosystems, which I know Nadal and his team feel strongly about.”

The 2023 edition of Boot Dusseldorf (January 21-29) will include the first Blue Innovation Dock forum, which will be held in Hall 10 across all nine days of the show.

From the opening Saturday on January 21, the forum will address the following topics: Leaders dialogue – business meets politics; Sustainable propulsion; Financing innovation and start-up disruption; Future fuels; Circular materials; Sustainable nautical tourism and water sports; Innovation for sustainability; Engaging NGOs and all players; and Engaging citizens and boaters.

Free for Boot Düsseldorf visitors and exhibitors, the Blue Innovation Dock has strong support from the yachting industry, with Groupe Beneteau as Performance Partner, Sanlorenzo as Project Partner and Pool Partners including Azimut, Bavaria, Brunswick, D-Marin, ePropulsion, Fabiani, Greenline, Princess, Sunreef and Torqeedo.

Following is the second part of an interview with Petros Michelidakis, Director of Boot Dusseldorf. For part 1 of the interview, please click here.

What are you hoping for after nine days of the Blue Innovation Dock?

That the information we’ve conveyed about our sector to political decision-makers was sufficient to speed up developments in terms of sustainability. Although our watersports only account for 0.1 per cent of EU-wide emissions, it’s important we contribute to keeping our destinations clean and making them cleaner.

The Blue Innovation Dock will be held in Hall 10

It would be fantastic if we could create a framework that is cross-sectoral and EU-wide. Why do Spaniards and Germans protect seaweed in their respective ways and Greeks don’t? And I am Greek. We must enter into dialogue. It’s not about who’s right but about conserving our destinations for generations to come.

What do you tell young people who are concerned about this very topic?

That the water sports industry is dependent on a clean climate and waters. As a networking platform, Boot will continue to raise awareness among society, young and old alike. Above all, we will promote dialogue with decision-makers in politics to ensure the necessary transformation and create the appropriate framework conditions.

Will NGOs also have a say?

Yes. All NGOs that are represented at boot – such as WWF, Greenpeace, NABU or Deutsche Meeresstiftung – are called upon to get involved and join the discussion. ‘Engaging NGOs and all players’ on Saturday, January 28 has been scheduled for this.

What discussions are you most likely to be attending?

I would very much like to participate on the first day when politicians will discuss with shipyard representatives. Quite prominent guests have announced their participation. Furthermore, each day of the Blue Innovation Dock is an innovation driver for the industry, which is why I’ll try to follow all subjects addressed.

Let’s talk about the boat show itself. After two cancelled editions, will Boot return to its old strength and size?

We are very satisfied with bookings received so far, which are on par with 2019, and will present watersports in their entirety on a huge exhibition area measuring 31 football pitches in total.

How many exhibitors will there be?

We expect around 1,500 exhibitors – a fantastic number in the history of Boot. Unfortunately, many small family-run businesses in the diving segment have not survived the Covid crisis, so we’re missing these exhibitors along with direct sales operations that have completely gone online. Nevertheless, there’s no other trade fair in the world with such extended ranges and, what’s more, in such an international setting.

Incidentally, the first admission ticket was sold to Iceland. This visitor will travel to Boot because he offers whale watching and intends to gradually renew his fleet.

Sunseeker 95 Yacht

Can you share some highlights you’re looking forward to?

It’s always difficult to pick some brands because they are all near and dear to my heart. The biggest yachts will come from Sunseeker (95 Yacht) and Sanlorenzo (SD90), both being about 30m LOA. In Hall 17 we will be showcasing – with celebrity support – wing surfing and wing foiling on a 60m long pool and in Hall 12 the new diving tower will be inaugurated. This is also where the opening of Boot will take place.

Halls 13 and 14 seem to be halls that also target visitors who don’t own boats.

Exactly. The Destination Seaside halls are designed to reflect the versatility of holidays by the sea; they focus on activities and regions. Coastal tourism here will be represented by the Lübecker Bucht, Portugal and Croatia as exhibitors. In future, these will probably be very important halls to win over new watersports enthusiasts.

To conclude, will Covid still be an issue at boot?

Boot will be held under completely normal conditions, the way we know and love. We’ve installed 3,000 Hepa filters in the exhibition halls to filter 99.99 per cent of all viruses out of the air, so the indoor air is constantly purified. This allows us to reduce energy consumption by not having to supply as much fresh air.
