The 43M Eco design was announced in early 2022

Sunreef Yachts has been commissioned to build hull two of the Sunreef 43M Eco superyacht, just four months after publicising the sale of the first. Sunreef announced the sale of the first 43M Eco during the Polish builder’s 20th anniversary party at the Monaco Yacht Show last September.

Based on a design for the Sunreef 43M sailing cat (formerly Sunreef 140), the shipyard has described the140ft superyacht with a 50ft 6in beam as the “world’s biggest electric luxury catamaran”.

The 43M Eco has a beam of 15.4m and a 49m mast

Sunreef has been developing solar-electric sailing and power catamarans through its Eco range, launching the first hulls of the 80 Eco and 60 Eco sailing cats last year. The Sunreef 43M Eco is similarly designed to provide an emissions-free cruising experience in complete silence.

Using green hi-tech solutions developed in-house by Sunreef, the 43m catamaran will feature composite-integrated solar panels built into the hull sides, superstructure and bimini, delivering up to 60kWp.

The ‘Ocean Lounge’ includes the aft platform and drop-down sides

With custom-engineered batteries and state-of-the-art electric engines, the 43M Eco will offer up to 12 hours of e-motoring at eco speed. The catamaran will have a cruising speed of 11 knots and a maximum speed of 14 knots.

The rig includes 1,000sqm of upwind sail area and 1,600sqm downwind sail area, along with a 49m mast. While under sail, the yacht’s hydro-generators will provide a steady supply of green energy.

The central hydraulic platform can carry a tender

One of the catamaran’s standout features is the vast beach club or ‘Ocean Lounge’, which combines the aft platform and fold-down balconies on either side. Dedicated to sunbathing, lounging and watersports, the lounge provides direct access to voluminous toy storage and diving gear, with an ‘invisible’ aft garage able to stow two jet-skis and other water toys.

Sunreef, which is represented in Singapore by Hong Seh Marine, builds its catamarans in two facilities in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast and is developing another facility in Ras Al Khaimah in UAE.

What has led to Azimut-Benetti’s “all-time high” record book and the company finishing last year by increasing its lead at the top of the Global Order Book?
I can’t recall
when the market has been like this. It has been booming for the past year or so. Our order book was up to €3 billion after the first two boat shows of the season, the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Genoa International Boat Show (in September 2022). It’s a record for us, not only for the value of the order book but especially for the duration, as we have orders for deliveries up to 2026 and 2027.

Such an order book helps us plan production because we can foresee our orders. It’s great in terms of value but also in terms of giving stability for many years. It’s also recognition from the market. Why has this happened? For all the industry, the pandemic was incredible. None of us was expecting this. It led to people rediscovering the pleasure of yachting, being in a place where you’re free, both in terms of where you can move and in terms of choosing the people around you.

This applies from the smaller models to the big yachts. We have been probably luckier or better than others in introducing trends that became even more popular during the pandemic, such as this idea to go back to nature. Our Benetti Oasis has enjoyed record sales. It’s incredible. For the Oasis 40M, we had to double the moulds to satisfy the demand. This has never happened before for a 40m yacht.

Benetti Oasis 40M introduced the Oasis Deck

The idea is to have a beach club which is really a beach area, not a cave where you go inside. Instead, you go back to being close to the sea, to the water, enjoying one connected area between inside and outside, with big windows that open. This lifestyle-focused design has been extremely successful, especially in certain mature markets, with Europe the forerunner.

So, why has Azimut-Benetti led the Global Order Book for superyachts for 23 years?
It’s a
reflection of the business going well. It’s a reflection of being winners on the market with our yachts, which is rewarding because it means we’re selected by many owners. However, the growth can’t be fast and big forever, because we want to keep quality under control.

We don’t want to grow our facilities even though the market is booming now. We are at the limit, which is why our deliveries are so far ahead. We don’t want to push production too much today, but to keep the situation under control, especially quality wise.

The Group says it has anticipated the trends and wishes of existing owners while gradually acquiring younger owners, with an average age of 45 for Azimut buyers and 55 for Benetti clients. How have you achieved this?
It’s interesting
from a social perspective to see how the profiles of wealthy people are changing, and that’s not just in this industry but across the globe. In the past, it took you a lifetime to become really rich, but in the new economy, digital technologies have changed this.

Vitelli speaks at the Discover the House of Yachting event in Viareggio

In Benetti, we still have the classic navettas or the Motopanfilo [37M], but in the last five years we’ve added some extra product ranges more focused on a lifestyle proposition, such as the Oasis. Even in the steel production, the B.Now series, we propose a more traditional stern and the Oasis Deck® version, which is extremely popular.

Can you tell us more about your focus on Low Emission Yachts, which Azimut says accounts for over half of its current models.
Our
new-generation Low Emission Yachts offer considerable reduction in consumption, about 20-30 per cent less than the market average. This has even started to become a selling point. In the Azimut Grande range, we’ve focused on three elements for 10 years. Firstly, the light weight of the models due to the extensive use of carbon-fibre, which we produce internally for the superstructure.

Secondly, our hull shapes, including some that are patented such as the D2P (displacement to planing), which is even more efficient in its latest generation.

Azimut Grande 26M features the POD 4600 propulsion system by ZF

The third ingredient is the propulsion and having the best propulsion for the type of yacht we use. We’ve been pioneers in pods. First, it was with Volvo, such as the triple installation of the IPS on the Azimut line, then it was Rolls-Royce pods on the Benetti Fast series. Now, the new Azimut Grande 26M is the first to have the Pod 4,600 system by ZF.

So, basically weight, hull efficiency and pods. The combination of the three elements brings effective results in terms of reducing consumption, which means less emissions – and we’re not talking a couple of per cent.

We’re also very interested in ideas for the future, so we’re involved in new fuels, hydrogen and so on, but that is the next stage. Today, we believe hybrid electric propulsion is an answer.

Benetti B.Yond 37M uses a new Siemens hybrid propulsion system

We recently launched the Benetti B.Yond 37M, the greenest yacht in its class. Its Siemens hybrid propulsion system reduces CO2 (carbon dioxide) by 24 per cent and NOX (nitrogen oxides) by 85 per cent. New applications are always a risk, so it was truly an entrepreneurial decision. We discussed it within the company, with the sales team initially preferring to have the systems tested elsewhere.

However, we as a family, especially my father, were saying, “If you want to stay ahead, you have to take a risk.” We worked cheek to cheek with Siemens and the system proved to work very well. Of course, it’s much more work for the technical department, so these steps in technology are a challenge, but this is how you show you’re a leader.

What are your thoughts on the Water Revolution Foundation’s new Yacht Environmental Transparency Index?
People often talk about sustainability
in very generic ways, and I think we should all try to use figures with an index. To me, the only real index today is consumption, because it’s something that can be tested and used to compare boats. I think the industry should start to only talk about numbers and not just people talking about the “most sustainable materials” but without a tangible approach. I think it’s important to show the real commitment of the industry to this topic.

The 30M is the flagship of Azimut’s Magellano series

I think the idea for the Water Revolution Foundation to establish an index is absolutely the right one, because the industry doesn’t have one, although I believe YETI (click for news article) consumption is a good index. I believe should be passed to an independent authority such as a class society, for example, so it’s not part of an association with members and we take away all possible ‘second thoughts’ behind that. I think the concept is right, but should probably pass from the Water Revolution Foundation to an independent body at a certain point.

What do you think will be the major change in superyachts in the coming years?
I think sustainability
and reducing emissions is a necessity. We should not go against the regulations, but we do need regulations that allow shipyards and engine and propulsion producers the time to adapt to new standards.

Even at the association level, I think we should join forces in developing these new technologies together. In the end, the competitive advantage you have in announcing you’re the first with hybrid propulsion or hydrogen is a brief marketing advantage of a few days. In an industry with high investment but few units, we should be more together. I am on the Board in SYBAss (Superyacht Builders Association) and I want to push more in that direction. It’s better to invest our energies and money together.

How do you view the Asia market, where Azimut and Benetti have a strong history and continue to be very popular?
Asia has always been a very
rewarding market and we have a long relationship with the region. After my father bought Benetti in 1984, the Hong Kong-based owner of Ambrosia was a minority shareholder. He was a very good customer of Benetti and fell in love with the company, so that helped us enter the market before others.

We sell models across our ranges, both from Azimut and Benetti, into Asia and I believe the owners there are sophisticated customers. The mainland China market is yet to evolve properly and is not progressing as we had all hoped, for a variety of reasons including boating regulations and free use of the coastline. We see Chinese owners keeping their boats elsewhere. In the short term, I don’t see a market of middle class owners buying 50-60ft Azimuts and moving up in size, like elsewhere.

Marine Italia is one of Azimut’s most successful dealers, based in Hong Kong but also representing the brand in Taiwan, Guangdong and Singapore. They’ve traditionally sold a lot of Fly and Grande models, but are now starting to sell more models from the Magellano line, which your father highlighted as one of his most important initiatives in Azimut’s first 50 years. What is the appeal of this line?
Magellano has been a revolution
in yachting, as the first crossover model in the market. It was conceived in 2007 and launched in 2009. We were followed by many other shipyards, from the small ones to the big ones, and now everybody talks about crossovers. The idea was inspired by trawlers, designed for long cruises, where you enjoy volume and comfort inside.

However, the Magellano is efficient in displacement mode and has a bit more speed than conservative trawlers, so owners can reach 22-24 knots if they need to reach a port quickly or the weather suddenly changes.

Azimut’s Magellano 25M revived the series

The flagship Magellano 30M we launched at the last Cannes Yachting Festival is amazing and we had double-figure sales before it was at any show. I believe in this concept and personally cruised on a Magellano 25M a couple of years ago, having spent all my life on planing hulls. I made a long cruise in a short time because I had to take it from our Fano shipyard (on Italy’s Adriatic coast) all the way down to the southern part of Italy and back north and on to the Cannes show.

Many times, I was eating lunch during navigation – it was so pleasant, even at 21 knots. You can eat and sleep during navigation because it’s so smooth over the waves. It’s a different way of cruising. There’s a lot of internal space with a contemporary design, without that traditional feeling of the old trawlers.

How have you enjoyed collaborating with Vincenzo De Cotiis, whose first yachting projects were the interiors of the Magellano 25M and 30M models?
When he started
working with us, all the interior magazines in the US asked for an exclusive because he’s a big name. He’s an architect as well as an artist. He designs collectibles and is represented in New York by the Carpenters Workshop Gallery, which is renowned around the world. He brings an architectural approach and some ideas for the layout I wasn’t expecting and was really impressed with, especially as he had never worked in the industry.

Vincenzo De Cotiis on the Magellano 25M

For example, on the Magellano 25M, it was the first time I’ve ever heard somebody say to me, ‘In the main saloon, why do you put the dining table like this (athwartships), which is a visual obstacle once you get in. If you turn it (along the centreline), the boat has a much wider effect and is much more pleasant, with better service.”

Then when I cruised on the model, I always kept it longitudinally, because he’s right: you don’t have such a big structure in your view, which changes the effect of the boat.

He also plays a lot with mirrors, so you always have a view of the sea and the feeling of water. On top of that, for his collectibles, he has this idea of combining poor materials with rich materials, but these poor materials are reinterpreted. He told me, “My favourite material is fibreglass because I personally convert it by hand and put in some colour powder myself, providing this effect, a mixture between a textile, a resin, a material which does not exist.”

Interior detail on the Magellano 25M

So, the options include this artistic fibreglass, which is handmade, according to his recipe! It’s very textural. It has nothing to do with the fibreglass we’re used to and it’s fascinating because it’s such a typical marine material completely converted into something you wouldn’t recognise as such. It’s very interesting.

On the Magellano 30M, where we propose both this material and more traditional options, most of the customers went for the design from De Cotiis.

His design is very sophisticated. It’s a contemporary interior, but different to what you see on other boats, which are often an empty box where the customer can play with loose furniture, typically by the big brands like Minotti and Poltrona Frau. I believe the Magellano is very interesting because the interior is a contemporary interpretation but with a very specific personality.

As Vice President, you work directly with your father Paolo, President of Azimut-Benetti. What have you learnt from him and how do you work together?

I’ve learned from my father that in this market, you win with the product. Marketing is nice, but you must win on the market with your boats. Even in the period of the global economic crisis in 2008 and 2009, we didn’t save one penny in product development. That made a difference. It was an opportunity to gain market share in those years because we were able to keep investing in new products. Our focus is to keep our feet on the ground and concentrate on being winners in what we offer to our customers.

Paolo and Giovanna Vitelli

Since working together, we’ve planned and managed an important change from the founders’ time to the next stage. Today, Azimut-Benetti is a billion-dollar turnover company. Over 10 years, we planned the growth of our management, so we have a clear governance, where the family has the vision and we are still the ones to decide on the product development. The product is then based on a committee that I coordinate but then delegate and leave space to managers, because this is the way you grow.

The company could not exist as a one-man or one-woman show. I believe we’re on the right path, as this is a way to prepare the company in the future for growing bigger, maybe going public or involving more managers. I think this is a path for good, sustainable growth rather than keeping the family 100 per cent hands on and limiting expansion.

Today, my father is involved in the strategic vision, fortunately, but much less involved in the everyday business. Apart from the B.Yond family, which really came from his spirit and vision, he’s not that involved in the rest of the product development anymore. Sometimes, when I have a little doubt, I go to him for advice, but it’s more about my personal concerns. He’s spending more time on his hospitality activities, as the family owns several hotels in the mountains, but he keeps an eye on the company.

Sanlorenzo will again have a strong presence in Hall 6 of Boot Dusseldorf, where its SD90 is among the show’s largest yachts along with Sunseeker’s 95 Yacht, 90 Ocean and 88 Yacht. The 27.4m SD90 had its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival just over four months ago and was also displayed at the Genoa International Boat Show later in September.

SD90 is a 28m entry model for the semi-displacement SD line and is the third model of the series – following the SD96 and SD118 – to feature both an exterior by Zuccon International Project and interior by Patricia Urquiola.

Philippe Briand was involved in the design of the SD90 hull, while propulsion options comprise twin 800hp MAN i6 engines or 1,150hp Cat C18s, which can deliver a top speed of 17 knots.

The 45m Feadship Blue Sky is on the market for the first time, with Camper & Nicholsons appointed as Central Agency for its sale.

A 2013 build from the Dutch builder’s F45 Vantage series, Blue Sky is listed for sale at US$22.8 million and is currently based at Gold Coast Marina in Hong Kong.

The 499GT superyacht was originally sold to a client in mainland China and has been described as ‘the first superyacht built by a Western shipyard specifically for a Chinese client’.

Customised features include a custom-made helicopter deck and entertainment areas for karaoke and mahjong.

Designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, Blue Sky has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with the exterior distinguished by eight vertical windows on each side.

The yacht has a 9.2m beam and 2.7m draft, while twin MTU engines deliver a cruising speed of 13 knots and a top speed of 14.5 knots.

An appreciation for the finer things in life inspired the original owner to make his dream of owning the luxurious vessel become reality, although a helipad needed to be added.

“Feadship’s Helix did a tour across Asia including Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. The previous owner of Blue Sky saw that yacht and wanted the same but with a helicopter pad,” said Carmen Lau, a Senior Advisor for Camper & Nicholsons (click for Profile).

“After that first hull, Feadship built seven more and Blue Sky is the last of the F45s, so it’s a very successful model. Feadship is top of the range, and this is a model designed specifically for the Asia market.”

Blue Sky has been well maintained and is a sight to behold when on board, due to a rich interior by British studio Bannenberg & Rowell Design.

The British builder’s new F Class flagship offers four cabins, a newly designed foredeck and a spectacular flybridge.

The Princess F65 is fitted with twin MAN engines

The new Princess F65 is the flagship of the British builder’s F Class of flybridge motor yachts, joining the F45, F50 and F55. The exterior features an extended knife-edge hull window and an accented colour styling blade.

The yacht is fitted with twin MAN V8 engines, with 1,000mhp, 1,200mhp or 1,300mhp options, while gyro and vector fin stabilisation, and increased fuel capacity are among options. Both the flybridge and main deck helm stations feature Raymarine navigation systems, with additional control stations in the aft cockpit offering a convenient option for docking.

The flybridge has three lounging areas

The enormous flybridge features three social areas to starboard, starting with a large sunpad aft, an angular C-shaped sofa with a folding dining table and storage, plus a smaller sofa forward, which can convert to an additional sunbed.

To port is the twin-seat helm station, while aft is a newly designed wet bar equipped with electric barbecue, coolbox and waste bin, with the option of a Lava Brick barbecue and ice maker. An optional electrically operated awning can be specified with the optional hard top.

The aft galley and dining area lead up to the saloon

The interior includes panoramic windows and a generous saloon, while the F65 takes cues from the Y72, such as the cockpit seamlessly connecting to the main saloon via a sliding patio door. There’s a hinge-up window above the aft galley bar top to further connect the cockpit to the interior.

The interior starts with a well-equipped, open-plan galley and a foldable dining table to starboard. Moving forward and up a step, the saloon features a C-shaped sofa to port and an angled sofa to starboard. The helm station has a pantograph door to the starboard side deck, while to port, a raised forward L-shaped sofa offers companion seating.

The foredeck is a new design for an F Class model and has a large C-shaped sofa facing twin sunbeds, with an optional teak coffee table, cool box and sun awning.

The full-beam master suite is midships

The lower deck accommodates eight guests across four cabins including a full-beam, midships master stateroom with an en-suite bathroom, which combines with the walk-in wardrobe to occupy a full-beam space between the bedroom and engine room.

An en-suite VIP cabin in the bow and guest cabins either side of the stairs complete the accommodation. An optional crew/occasional cabin with the option of a double berth and dedicated access via the transom platform is also available.

The Princess F65 debuted at the Southampton International Boat Show last September and is among the British builder’s display at Boot Dusseldorf from January 21-29.

Alex Lee, LYC’s Director of Marketing & Membership

Lantau Yacht Club, Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, has announced Alex Lee as its new Director of Marketing & Membership. Lee is a seasoned membership and sales professional who has a wealth of knowledge in the hospitality industry, partnership development, and sales and marketing campaigns.

He has prior experience with luxury hotel brands and prestigious private clubs in Hong Kong including JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong and Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong. Lee will be reaching out to yacht industry partners for more collaborations in the future to promote the LYC brand and the yachting lifestyle to the public.

Lantau Yacht Club (LYC) has also appointed Lo Chi Sing as Head Chef of Caffè Napoli. With more than 30 years under his belt, Chef Lo has extensive experience in curating fine dining and large-scale catering events. Prior to joining LYC, Chef Lo had been with The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Epicurean Management Limited, The Park Lane Hotel and The Furama Hotel Hong Kong.

In his new role at LYC, Chef Lo is responsible for reimagining the culinary creations of Caffè Napoli every season, sourcing gourmet ingredients and providing leadership for the culinary operations team for the 48-seat restaurant. Chef Lo is debuting a new menu and members are looking forward to his gastronomic delights at Caffè Napoli.

YACHTS INCREASING, MORE EXPECTED

The number of members and yachts berthing at LYC gradually increased last year and the marina expects more members’ yachts to arrive in the coming two years. According to yacht agents, boat sales in Hong Kong remain stable and more new boaters are joining the community, while sports boating and leisure yachting have attracted more young enthusiasts during the pandemic.

With China borders open since January 8 and pandemic restrictions easing, LYC believes yachting activities will increase, boosting the demand for berths. With simplified procedures for cross-border yachting activities, Hong Kong could become the main hub for leisure boating in the Greater Bay Area (Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macau).

As the authorities support and cultivate a yachting culture in GBA, and provide professional support for the industry – including sectors such as legal, insurance, maintenance and financing – the yachting industry will continue to grow and expand.

“Recreational boating, especially the visits of superyachts, contributes substantially to the local economy. High-spending yachting tourism creates multiple economic impacts for Hong Kong across sectors such as F&B, retail, entertainment, boat maintenance and service, accommodation, transportation, insurance, and so on,” Lee said.

“LYC will play a key role for such development as it’s the only new marina in Hong Kong in the past two decades and is equipped with the latest technology and facilities. It’s also only marina in the city that can accommodate superyachts up to 100m and boasts a strategic location 25 minutes to the CBD, 20 minutes to the airport and 60 mins to other GBA cities.”

LYC’s Yachtcation package

Meanwhile, LYC’s Yachtcation package was particularly popular last summer. A special arrangement provided visiting members who booked the package with the option to enjoy complimentary afternoon tea on the private roof of one of Discovery Bay’s luxury residences, which commands a breathtaking view of DB and Hong Kong’s city-centre skyscrapers.

Furthermore, the LYC Service Yard now has four tenants following the opening of the Starship Yachts office, which joins MSA (Marine Service Asia), Lodestone Yachts and NextWave Yachting.

Absolute Yachts will exhibit four models in Hall 6 of Boot Dusseldorf (January 21-29), including the new 56 Fly. The 56 Fly was among Absolute’s two world premieres at the Cannes Yachting Festival four months ago, with a hull delivered to Hong Kong before the official global debut.

The 56 Fly embodies many of the brand’s new features including modular furniture in the aft cockpit and aft end of the flybridge, with glass parapets on both levels. Solar panels are built into the hard top, providing energy independence and silence without need for a generator while at anchor. The full-beam owner’s cabin is in the bow, with the midships VIP cabin virtually a second master cabin.

Cirrus Aircraft is Every Aviator’s Dream

Cirrus Aircraft is Every Aviator’s Dream

The SR Series not only provides comfort when flying, but its safety features also ensure peace of mind.

By Joseph Low

Jan Ralph and his wife.

Humans have made great leaps in aviation since the Wright brothers first took flight. From the first personal aircraft to commercial jetliners, aircraft have become essential to regional and long-distance commutes. For business or personal travel needs, journeying through the sky confers a sense of exhilaration unfound in conventional forms of transport like taking a train, driving or sailing on a ship. The idea of freedom commonly associated with air travel draws people to explore the blue skies.

To help aviation enthusiasts with their quest to conquer the sky, companies like Cirrus Aircraft have created the best-selling personal aircraft and robust training programs to teach people how to fly.  Starting with the VK-30 in 1984, Cirrus Aircraft has since grown to focus on manufacturing the SR Series piston aircraft and the SF-50 Vision Jet the world’s first Personal Jet™. The SR Series comes in three models, each being a single-engine, piston composite aircraft – touted to be a game-changer in the personal aviation industry. This year marks the delivery of the 9,000th SR Series aircraft. Worldwide flight time on Cirrus Aircraft has passed 15 million hours, and 240 people have returned home safely because of advanced safety systems such as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS).

2022 G6 SR Aircraft, Cirrus Aircraft

With nearly 40 years of experience in the personal aviation industry, Cirrus Aircraft has consistently ranked at the top for customer satisfaction. Jan Ralph is a Cirrus Aircraft customer who owns a 2018 G6 SR22 aircraft with a Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, Garmin’s Perspective+ and is fully air-conditioned. Jan is the father of two children and has been interested in aviation since he was young. He started with Airfix models and then onto remote control aircraft.

Visiting the Biggin Hill airshow in the UK was an annual pilgrimage for Jan when he was a child. At 11 years old, his father paid for a trial flying lesson that eventually paved the way for him to obtain a Private Pilot License in 2018 and a subsequent Instrument Rating in 2019.

Jan selected the Cirrus SR22 for its unique and advanced flying qualities.

“It’s a real ‘get there’ aircraft with long-distance capabilities and amazing avionics, which helps lessen the workload for the types of flying we do in Asia,” shares Jan. “The CAPS also provides great comfort in flying with my family over the jungles and palm plantations of Malaysia and Indonesia, serving as an additional safety feature. Additionally, the comfort of the cabin is really the best choice for my missions.”

Jan further adds that regionally, in Southeast Asia, the Cirrus SR22 is best suited for private travel. Its superb range makes flying across the region a breeze and a comfortable ride. Experiencing all of this first-hand was Jan, who had since flown to many nearby places like Langkawi, Tioman Islands and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The trip was done during the tail-end of Covid-19 restrictions in Singapore and vaccinated travel was the only way out of the country.

“Toward the end of Covid when borders were opening a little, and vaccinated travel lanes were very expensive and hard to secure, we were able to fly direct to Langkawi and other parts of Malaysia while many others were not. I was the first international flight into Tioman Island at the beginning of April and have been there 17 times since borders opened up,” said Jan. “Getting from Singapore to Tioman would usually take over seven hours via driving and ferry, but with the Cirrus SR22 we can reach the amazing island of Tioman in 37 mins.”

Most recently, Ralph had just completed his trip from Singapore to Australia and clocked over 54 flying hours while covering over 10,000 miles.

“Our mission was to fly and collect another Cirrus aircraft which had its annual maintenance check at Air Gold Coast but was stranded due to Covid-19,” said Jan. “I flew with a friend/Chief Flight Instructor and two-time earth rounder to collect the G3 SR22 and then flew back in convoy.”

Along the way, Jan stopped at several stunning places like Karumba and Shute Harbour. As with all journeys, there will be times when skills are tested and that happened to be over the long water crossings from Timor to Darwin and across Indonesia.

“This trip really tested my pilot skills, and I got to know how capable the aircraft is. I plan to make this a yearly trip now to Australia and next year. I am also looking to fly from Singapore to the UK.”

Leonardo da Vinci said, “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”

For those fortunate to experience flying, the desire to return to the skies will only grow stronger as is the case for Jan. Cirrus Aircraft’s range of models, flight training programme and emphasis on safety makes it one of the industry-leading companies for aviation enthusiasts.

New Zealand seal comeback at SailGP’s Singapore debut

A victory at Southeast Asia’s first SailGP event helped Peter Burling’s men edge closer to Tom Slingsby’s Australians in the Season 3 standings as the series heads to Sydney.

New Zealand defied the odds to win the Singapore Sail Grand Prix, cementing Peter Burling’s team as the main threat to Australia as Tom Slingsby’s outfit bid for a third straight season title. New Zealand are now the only team besides Australia to win more than one event this season and just nine points behind the leaders in the standings.

With both days of general admission sold out in Singapore, over 5,000 fans across the weekend packed the shorelines of East Coast Park.

New Zealand, SailGP, Singapore, debut, Peter Burling, Tom Slingsby, Denmark, Switzerland, Nicolai Sehested, East Coast

Day two was dominated by three teams, with New Zealand, Denmark and surprise packet Switzerland finishing in the top three of both fleet races. It was a day to remember for the Swiss, as they claimed their first race win to finish fourth in Singapore, agonisingly short of a first final appearance.

Nicolai Sehested’s Denmark raced well to finish second in race three, win race four, and pushed the New Zealand team all the way in the final. A strong first day was enough to see Australia make the final, but its indifferent form from the day two fleet races carried into the final and it finished third.

New Zealand, SailGP, Singapore, debut, Peter Burling, Tom Slingsby, Denmark, Switzerland, Nicolai Sehested, East Coast

For Burling, it was a victory to savour, after his team started the event with a penalty for a contact incident with the United States in pre-event training.

“Coming into this weekend on the back of those penalty points and just seeing the way the team came together under a bit of adversity is super pleasing for us as a group. It’s now two from two against the Aussies in finals,” Burling said.

“We’re more than happy to keep chipping away and now looking forward. We want to try to make the top three and then to try to be in our best possible shape going into that final to win the season.”

New Zealand, SailGP, Singapore, debut, Peter Burling, Tom Slingsby, Denmark, Switzerland, Nicolai Sehested, East Coast

It was a third event final appearance of the season for Sehested and a first time in second place on the podium after a solid weekend for Denmark, as it stayed in touch with the all-important top three.

“We closed the gap and that’s all we need to do,” Sehested said. “We still have two more events to keep closing the gap. It’s only in San Francisco that counts, so we will just keep chipping away and we don’t mind sitting in fifth until the San Francisco event.”

The Australians now sit 15 points clear of fourth place with just three events remaining and are all but guaranteed a place in the Grand Final. SailGP returns to Sydney Harbour for its next event, the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix on February 18-19.

New Zealand, SailGP, Singapore, debut, Peter Burling, Tom Slingsby, Denmark, Switzerland, Nicolai Sehested, East Coast

Slingsby said: “We’re feeling really good; we‘re really happy with how we’re looking on the ladder. It’s going to be amazing going back to Australia. It feels like we can just do our thing and sail and just try to get some decent results. We don’t need to go out there and get first to make the final, so we’re going to go out there, sail free and try to get the win in front of the home crowd.”

Quentin Delapierre’s France dropped out of the top three in the season standings after an eighth-place finish at East Coast Park, while fourth for Ben Ainslie’s Great Britain team in Singapore was enough to see them replace France in the Grand Final positions.

New Zealand, SailGP, Singapore, debut, Peter Burling, Tom Slingsby, Denmark, Switzerland, Nicolai Sehested, East Coast

Seventh at this event for the United States leaves them seventh in the championship and driver Jimmy Spithill looking unlikely for a second straight Grand Final appearance, while Canada’s early-season form seems to have evaporated as Phil Robertson’s team sits sixth in the season standings.

Spain’s struggles continued with a last place in Singapore, leaving driver Jordi Xammar only one point above the bottom-placed Swiss on the season three ladder.
