The family-owned Port Takola in the Gulf of Thailand has received approval for a huge expansion of its marina and service yard.

Thailand’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Board has approved Port Takola Yacht Marina & Boatyard’s application for a marina expansion up to 300 berths and 15,000sqm of boatyard service area.

The expansion will offer an extra-wide concrete pontoon berth to accommodate yachts from 10m to 45m. A work berth will be available on a north section of the marina harbour. The boatyard will increase its capacity from 9,000sqm to 15,000sqm, its lifting capacity will increase from 38 tonnes to 80 tonnes, while a boatshed will be available for refits of yachts up to 25m.

Matthew na Nagara, General Manager of Port Takola and a former Chairman of the Thai Yachting Business Association, said: “We are excited that our EIA application has been approved. Port Takola has had a modest start, but we are proud of our steady development.

“We have had a great cruising community with several superyachts here, while charter yacht tenancy has also been increasing. This is due to our advantageous location that offers year-round shelter and a convenient access from land and sea.”

Port Takola is a 10-minute drive from Ao Nang and 40 minutes from Krabi International Airport, while Krabi is situated in the Phang Nga Bay archipelago, Thailand’s most famous cruising ground. “The location makes the marina an ideal home port as well as a port of call,” Nagara said.

Port Takola is being developed by Nagara and his father, Surgeon Admiral Suriya (RTN), and is built on a century-old family estate called Isara Estuary, located in the Krabi river mouth. Transforming the former shrimp farm into a full-service marina began in 2010.

Phase one commenced operation in 2018 with 50 wet berths, 50 dry berths, a 38-tonne Roodberg trailer boat lift, fuel dock and café. The marina recently expanded Pier G with 25 more berths, ranging from 15m to 45m. www.porttakola.com

Chartered by Michael Firmin with some experienced crew, the Infiniti 46R is among almost 80 entries 2½ months ahead of the race start in Malta on October 22.

The Infiniti 46R Maverick was among almost 80 entries for the 43rd Rolex Middle Sea Race as of August 10. The annual spectacle starts in Valletta’s Grand Harbour in Malta on October 22 before returning after an anti-clockwise lap around Sicily and surrounding islands.

The cut-off date for entry is officially September 23, but the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) has retained the discretion to accept late entries up to September 30.

This year’s entrants hail from across Europe, Australia, US, Canada, UAE and South Africa, and features the usual array of professionals, amateurs and adventurers. At the faster end, debutant Frank Slootman’s MOD70 Snowflake has been joined by Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi 70, which will mark its fifth appearance.

Among the monohulls, one entry to catch the eye is Maverick, which was campaigned around the 606nm course with great success on two previous occasions by Quentin Stewart, winning class both times and finishing third overall in 2016.

This year, Maverick has been chartered by Michael Firmin, who raced on the DSS foil-equipped flyer at the 2017 Rolex Fastnet and 2019 Rolex Sydney Hobart, where she finished third in class. Firmin has not previously competed in the Rolex Middle Sea Race and leapt at the chance to charter Maverick when he learned she was available.

“Despite a longstanding love of the ocean and offshore racing, this will be my first Rolex Middle Sea Race. I have been very lucky to complete all the other major blue water events and I hold this one in high regard. It has long been on the bucket list,” Firmin said.

Maverick is an awesome boat that I have had a long affinity with from the initial concept through to Quentin’s successful campaigning over many seasons. I know her pedigree very well.”

Firmin is joined by Stu Bannatyne, known as ‘King of the Southern Ocean’ and a four-time winner of the Ocean Race, two-time 29er world champion Steve Thomas, David Gilmour and Infiniti founder Gordon Kay.

The 30.5m Leopard 3, a Farr 100, is among the largest entries as it returns after a five-year absence. In contrast to Firmin, Chris Sherlock is no stranger to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, having first competed back in 1997 onboard Mike Slade’s IOR maxi, Longobarda. Sherlock has competed four times since as the skipper of Leopard of London in 2002, and Leopard 3 in 2009, 2010 and 2017.

“The Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the greatest offshore races in the world,” Sherlock said. “First, it’s a circle and that is unusual. It has the most amazing scenery, too. Most importantly, I think it is a fair race. You will get a bit of everything and because it is a circle every boat should get the conditions they perform best in at some point. It’s not just a straight line, so it’s never boring.”

In 2009, Slade and Sherlock brought the 30.5m Leopard 3 to the course and – in winds like 2007 – set a blistering pace, finishing just over 30 minutes outside the-then record time. Returning in 2010, and racing in less-favourable breeze, Leopard 3 was outgunned by Esimit Europa 2 in the battle for line honours. In 2017, Leopard 3 was under charter with Sherlock as skipper and finished second on the water behind Rambler in another ‘slow’ year.

For 2022, Leopard is under new ownership, while the crew includes a lot of Ocean Race experience as well as experience on Leopard, and includes Mitch Booth, Ian Budgen, Jan Dekker, Juanpa Marcos and Will Best as navigator

“We have a new owner who is currently building his familiarity with the boat. He is young, likes to helm and is keen to go offshore. We did the RORC Caribbean 600 as a taster and that went well,” Sherlock said. “The Rolex Middle Sea Race is the next challenge. It is one of my favourite races. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Rolex Middle Sea Race, Maverick, Michael Firmin, Leopard 3, Valletta, Grand Harbour, Malta, Sicily, Frank Slootman, MOD70, Snowflake, Giovanni Soldini, Maserati Multi 70, ArtieArtie III was seventh overall in 2021

Within the main body of IRC entries, the impressive two-time winning Maltese co-skipper combo, Lee Satariano and Christian Ripard, are back hoping for a three-peat, with Satariano’s latest Artie.

Among yachts returning from last year, Frederic Puzin’s Daguet-Corum 3 finished first in IRC Class 2 and third overall, while Artie III was second in IRC Class 3 and seventh overall. Chenapan 4, Gilles Caminade’s Ker 40, finished in the top 20 overall, as did fellow French entry Ludovic Gerard’s Solenn for Pure Ocean (second in the Double-Handed Division).

The eventual fleet count last year was 114. The highest gathering was 130 in 2018, which marked the 50th anniversary of the first Rolex Middle Sea Race in 1968.

Ferretti Group’s participation at the second China International Consumer Products Expo featured the Riva 180th Anniversary VIP Reception, highlighted by the preview of the new Anniversario yacht and scale models of three new superyachts: the wallywhy200, Pershing GTX116 and Riva 50 Metri.

Represented by staff from Ferretti Group and local dealer Speedo Marine, the Group’s first participation at the Expo held the Riva 180th Anniversary VIP Reception cocktail at the public dock of Haikou National Sailing Center where VIPs included Haikou City officials, show organisers and industry partners.

The event included a screening of Riva: The Persuaders!, with David Beckham, Charles Leclerc and Pierfrancesco Favino starring in the action-packed, three-minute film inspired by the classic TV series, The Persuaders!

As the cocktail moved to its climax, the Anniversario – a yacht produced exclusively for Riva’s 180th anniversary – was slowly unveiled on the huge screen. The yacht was launched to pay tribute to Riva Aquarama, its iconic predecessor launched in 1962.

Fabiomassimo Discoli, Sales and Marketing Director of Ferretti Group Asia Pacific, said: “This is a night dedicated to Riva’s 180th anniversary, a time to toast Riva and its Chinese partners. We choose to hold our anniversary at this Expo because Hainan is China’s yacht mecca and the wind vane of China’s yacht culture. The island has been leading the trend of China’s yacht market just like our brand, which lives in a harmonious ecological system surrounded by flowing water, art and aesthetics.

“On this occasion, I would like to thank all our Chinese friends for your constant support for Ferretti Group and Riva, and to launch a new limited edition Riva yacht, Anniversario. In the future, Riva will begin to write a new 180-year chapter in the history of global shipbuilding.”

Azimut has launched hull one of the Grande 36 Metri in Viareggio ahead of the model’s world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where it will debut alongside the Grande 26 Metri and Magellano 30 Metri.

The 36 Metri is the second-largest model in Azimut’s range and like the 38m Trideck launched last year, it also features exterior styling by Alberto Mancini and interior design by Achille Salvagni.

Among notable to features are a semi-walkaround upper deck, which runs on the same level from the stern almost to the tip of the bow, which “revolutionises the traditional layout and creates an area that didn’t exist before on boats this size,” according to Azimut.

Furthermore, the windows in the skylounge can open completely and slide out of view, transforming the upper deck into a huge space from which to enjoy 360-degree views.

The Grande 36 Metri is part of Azimut’s Low Emission Yacht range due to its high-efficiency D2P® Displacement-to-Planing hull designed by Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture with the shipyard’s research and development office, plus the extensive use of carbon-fibre to reduce the weight of the superstructure.

Azimut states that these factors help reduce CO2 emissions by 15-30 per cent, at both slow cruising and high speeds, compared to boats of the same weight and size with a traditional chine hull.

The 130’ Bellissima is Riva’s largest Flybridge model

Riva has launched the first 130’ Bellissima at its La Spezia yard. The yacht has been sold to an American owner and is the largest model in the builder’s Flybridge range, which also includes the 90’ Argo, 102’ Corsaro Super and 110’ Dolcevita.

The 130’ Bellissima is the first planing flybridge in Riva’s range to extend across three full decks, with a full-widebody design, while remaining under 300GT.

The 40m yacht with an almost 8m beam is the brainchild of Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, which has designed all Riva’s yachts since 1994, and was developed with Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “Riva Bellissima is a superlative boat, in both name and fact. As the new flagship in the flybridge range, she has all my admiration and enthusiasm.

“This is a magical year for Riva. Our yards are all in a state of grace and the results are there for everyone to see: beautiful boats, ecstatic owners. When you see a Riva cruising on the water, a Riva Bellissima, everything stops and you can pause the world to enjoy a tailor-made miracle, an aesthetic experience that words can’t describe.”

The exterior styling features carbon-fibre, steel and glass. The windshield is made with spherical crystals and features the typical counter-curvature, while the hull window design is based on a black line that runs along the silvery side of the boat and rises towards the deck.

Extensive glazed surfaces allow natural light to illuminate the interiors of the main and upper decks and offer magnificent panoramic views. The main saloon features glass and polished rosewood, and has ceilings over 2m high. The master suite is on the main deck, while there are four en-suite cabins and a large lobby on the lower deck.

The exteriors introduce a new concept for the stern area, which is divided into a large beach club and a generous cockpit, offering over 60sqm of liveable space. A jet-ski, tender and Seabob are stored in the port hull side.

On the upper deck, the aft outdoor area is set up as a dining area seating 10, while the side walkways create two closed, private balconies. The sun deck offers further outdoor space for guests.

Riva 130’ Bellissima is powered by twin MTU engines rated 2,638mph each, giving her an estimated top speed of 26 knots and a cruising speed of 23 knots.

Qingdao wins Clipper Race

Qingdao has won the Clipper 2019-20 Race, after over 40,000nm, six ocean crossings and eight legs. The Clipper 2019-20 Race started in London in September 2019 and after a two-year pause at its halfway point due to the global pandemic, restarted from the Philippines in March this year.

Skippered by Chris Brooks, Qingdao has been the team to beat from early in the circumnavigation and scored a total of 145 points, 10 clear of Punta del Este. The team won five races in the 2019-20 edition, more than any other team, and was also on the podium eight times in 14 races.

Leaving Derry-Londonderry for Race 15, Qingdao was nine points clear and placed third to cement victory. The team also won the most Scoring Gate points in the 11 months of racing, taking 14 coveted bonus points.

“We are very glad to learn that Qingdao has won the Clipper 2019-20 Race. Hereby, I would like to express our warm congratulations to Skipper Chris and all the crew members,” Che wrote.

“You have overcome numerous difficulties, fought against the waves, conquered the challenges of the whole race and won the final victory. You have shown the world the great charm of Qingdao as a vibrant ocean city and a liveable and lovable city with your remarkable performance.”

Punta del Este, skippered by Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez, moved into second position overall after the previous sprint across the North Atlantic. Like Qingdao, Punta del Este was in the lead pack of Race 15, coming fourth in the final stage and cementing its second place in the Clipper 2019-20 Race standings with 135 points.

Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez, the first Spanish Skipper to compete in the Clipper Race, led his team with the spirit of Punta del Este, the city and yacht club it represented on the global route.

The team, known for its loud and enthusiastic approach to sailing but always with a firm competitive edge, won the very first race of the circumnavigation and went on to secure six podium positions overall. Regularly the fastest yacht in the Dell Latitude Rugged Ocean Sprints, Punta del Este gained more Ocean Sprint bonus points than any other team (22 points).
