After more than three decades in the industry, I’ve learned that the most valued luxury isn’t opulence – it’s seamlessness. The world’s most discerning travellers want to move through the world effortlessly, without disruption.

They want access to the extraordinary, but without spectacle. They expect their preferences to be anticipated, and every detail managed flawlessly, before they even realise it needs to be done.

It’s the seamless choreography behind every journey and every experience that truly makes the magic, from collecting luggage a day before departure, direct access to the aircraft steps via our private fleet, the child’s correct car seat already installed, the hotel room already adjusted to personal temperature preferences – this is just as precious to our clients (and us) as the trip itself.

Minerva Private Travel was founded in 1999 as an invitation-only service for a select global clientele. Our clients include leading figures in film and entertainment, prominent entrepreneurs, legal professionals and industry chiefs, many of whom I now consider extended family.

Every experience we craft is entirely unique. There are no one-size-fits-all templates, and we never send our clients anywhere unless it has been meticulously experienced and vetted by me or my expert team.

No matter the trip, at Minerva, every journey begins with a one-on-one conversation that goes far beyond logistics. It’s about uncovering passions, preferences, habits and even dreams.

From dietary requirements to personal tastes, hobbies and even fears, we take it all ‘on board’. Whether it’s a milestone celebration, a restorative break or a spontaneous escape, the experience is tailored from the ground up.

We’ve intentionally remained focused, growing organically through high-value referrals and repeat clients. This deliberate approach allows us to deepen relationships and refine every element of what we offer.

Over the years, we’ve amassed a trusted network of highly valued partners who meet our exacting standards, ensuring we consistently deliver the utmost service and truly exceptional experiences for our elite clientele.

YACHTING ESCAPES

Yacht charter and sailing holidays remain a top priority for our clients, and we don’t see that changing. There’s something about time spent at sea that perfectly blends adventure with unparalleled luxury.

From a romantic honeymoon on a luxury charter in the Aegean to a week-long, multi-generational family getaway exploring the British Virgin Islands, yachts provide sanctuary, freedom and the feeling of ‘home’ in equal measure.

The 55m Purpose is among yachting options

For a completely customised experience, you could explore Thailand’s myriad of islands onboard the stunning 55m Trinity superyacht Purpose. From Koh Tao’s crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant marine life and abundant coral reefs to savouring the local culture and cuisine, a luxury yacht holiday creates unforgettable memories.

When it comes to Caribbean escapes, the itineraries crafted by Ritz-Carlton’s all-suite yacht Evrima are beloved for blending luxury with discovery. And for the ultimate adventure in the Galápagos, Grace by Quasar Expeditions is a top choice. This glamorous, 16-guest yacht (once a gift to Grace Kelly) offers a refined, sustainable journey to remote islands and incredible wildlife.

We also love Asia’s largest wooden sailing yacht, Lamima, the epitome of traditional Indonesian craftsmanship, adorned with modern luxury, complete with expert local crews and bespoke itineraries from Bali to Raja Ampat.

ASIAN DESTINATIONS

As for destinations, Asian gems continue to dazzle, with clients drawn to its rich diversity and exceptional experiences, from turquoise waters to lush jungles.

For instance, the exclusive Amanwana camp on Indonesia’s Moyo Island offers a secluded, tented sanctuary in the middle of the jungle. Our families delight in the seaplane journey from Bali, and then the ride in a vintage jeep to camp. It’s a wonderful blend of understated luxury and nature with plenty of child-friendly activities and lifelong memories to be made.

Similarly, Nihi on Sumba Island epitomises laid-back luxury in a surfer’s paradise, with pristine beaches, world-class waves and family-sized villa estates. It provides a soulful, barefoot-chic retreat that perfectly balances relaxation and adventure.

The Nihi resort on Sumba Island; Photo: Nihi

For a touch of unparalleled Japanese hospitality, we love The Shinmonzen. Nestled on the Shirakawa River in Kyoto’s historic Gion district, this discreet, ultra-luxury haven offers authentic, exclusive experiences with geishas, private tea ceremonies and zen meditation in hidden temples.

For serene escapes in China, Yangshuo Sugar House in Guilin is a unique, contemporary resort born from a historic sugar mill, beautifully blending industrial heritage with the region’s glorious mountains.

Further east, the Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake blends classical Chinese elegance with modern luxury, offering private lake cruises and chef-curated banquets on a private pavilion, perfectly tailored for our clients.

THE WELLNESS WAY

While destination choice is crucial, it’s the deeper intention behind each journey that truly guides us. Increasingly, wellness is becoming a central theme in how our clients choose to travel. Wellness tourism is expected to hit a value of US$1.3 trillion by 2025, and Minerva clients are emblematic of this trend.

Where holidays were once seen as indulgent escapes, they are now viewed as essential to both health and longevity. We’ve seen a year-on-year uptick in travellers seeking wellness-focused itineraries, be it healing retreats, medi-spas, personalised longevity programmes or wellness sabbaticals.

We now regularly plan immersive stays at wellness resorts that integrate ancient healing traditions with cutting-edge science, often within spectacular natural settings.

The Nihi resort on Sumba Island; Photo: Nihi

Even infrastructure is catching up. Airports are already incorporating wellness features into their main passenger areas. Some premium lounges go a little further, whether it’s an oxygen lounge at Tokyo’s

Narita Airport, a yoga room in San Francisco, or a sauna in the Finnair lounge in Helsinki.

Airlines are reviewing their wellness offerings, investing in state-of-the-art technologies including on-board wellness zones. On Qantas’ Project Sunrise planes, six first-class suites now offer customised lighting, allowing you to choose which time zone you wish to fly in.

GOOD CONNECTIONS

Sustainability is another defining expectation. Today’s ultra-high-net-worth traveller wants to leave a lighter footprint, give back in meaningful ways, and know that they are enriching the local ecosystem. We work with eco-lodges in Africa, conservation-led resorts in Southeast Asia, and heritage hotels in Bhutan.

For some clients, that might mean donating to reforestation projects; for others, visiting a local artisan or school supported by their hotel stay. We see this not as a trend but as the new standard, so that luxury and responsibility must coexist for the people that call each destination home.

While destinations and travel motives evolve, the expectations remain constant: perfection, discretion and precision. Of course, some requests are a higher mountain to climb, and access to exclusive experiences is in demand, although I prefer to move away from the phrase ‘hard to secure’.

While these experiences may be challenging for most to access, they’re rarely out of reach for us. If a client has a specific request, whether it’s centre court at Wimbledon, a private suite at the Monaco Grand Prix, front-row concert seats, or entry to a members-only event, then nine times out of ten, I will secure it.

What we offer is more than service. It’s a partnership. Sometimes that means seeing a client off at the airport or escorting the entire trip. Sometimes it means fielding a call at 3am. That’s the invisible part. And that’s what makes it seamless.

The Hong Kong sailor talks about the “great challenge” of competing in the 100th-anniversary edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, a full three decades after first competing in the bluewater classic.

The 695nm route from Cowes to Cherbourg

Of the world’s bluewater classics, the Rolex Fastnet Race is arguably the most highly revered. Hosted and organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club since 1925, the biennial race departs from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, on England’s south coast. The race start is to the sound of cannon fire from the historic Royal Yacht Squadron, a renowned institution partnered by Rolex since the early 1980s.

Sailors then head west along the English Channel towards the south coast of Ireland, where they round the iconic Fastnet Rock. Having formerly finished in Plymouth, the race since 2021 has concluded in Cherbourg, in the north coast of France, creating a longer 695nm challenge.

The iconic Fastnet Rock

“The Rolex Fastnet Race is a rite of passage for any sailor,” says Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard. “It is a relentless and often brutal challenge. It demands a multitude of skills – navigational and tactical awareness, flawless preparation, exemplary teamwork and resilience in the face of the harshest conditions.”

Since 2001, Rolex has been a partner of the race, which two years ago featured a record 430 yachts from around the world for its 50th edition. Martine Grael, another Rolex Testimonee, admires the race for its inclusivity.

“The experience of offshore sailing is so raw it ignites your senses,” she says. “At races like the Rolex Fastnet Race, it does not matter who you are, your background or where you come from. The age, size and type of boat is also unimportant. This is sailing at its purest, and to participate is both a privilege and an accomplishment to be savoured.”

Karl Kwok

Karl Kwok’s TP52 Beau Geste is among entries for the 100th-anniversary edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race (starting July 26), three decades after he first competed in the race in 1995 with his ILC 40 Beau Geste.

“It was a very light year, making it a slow race,” Kwok says. “The first night was very tricky, trying to get around Land’s End. Two of our close competitors hit the rocks while trying to avoid the strong tides. I will have a handful of friends from the 1995 race rejoin the team in 2025. I’ve had the privilege of having friends from Hong Kong join me on many races.”

Gavin Brady – who has competed in multiple America’s Cup campaigns, and Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Races – has raced for three decades with Kwok, who famously won the 1997 edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Kwok competing in the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race on his Farr 80 Beau Geste

“Racing has given me many adventures, and the team and I have had an amazing journey, experiencing so many different types of competition,” says Kwok, who has raced since 1975. “Yacht racing is so unique because you can be short-course racing in Newport or competing in a bluewater classic like the Rolex Fastnet Race.”

Kwok has owned over a dozen boats named Beau Geste including a MOD 70, a Botin 80 and a Farr 80, competing on the latter in back-to-back editions of the Rolex Fastnet Race in 2009 and 2011.

Kwok (far right) with Cowen Chiu and Margaret Kwok in 2009

“In 2009, we had a very close race with Ran 2 all the way around the course. Ran came in first that year, but we were inspired to try again in 2011. This time, we were leading but had the disappointment of having to withdraw due to structural issues with the boat. This is the harsh reality of offshore racing – going head-to-head with mother nature.”

This year, Kwok will compete on his TP52 Beau Geste in both the Admiral’s Cup and Rolex Fastnet Race, with Brady again serving as tactician. Kwok will effectively have two boats in both events as owner of a new Botin-designed Fast 40, Beau Ideal, which will be skippered by David Sweete, a member of Kwok’s team for 12 years.

Kwok also raced on his Farr 80 Beau Geste in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race

“We’ve been focusing on the Admiral’s Cup and the Rolex Fastnet Race for a year, and we have a mix of young and experienced sailors, a balance I find important not only for our result but for the future of the sport. Our aim is to be well-prepared and ready for anything, which is easier said than done,” Kwok says.

“This Rolex Fastnet Race is a difficult one because it’s part of the Admiral’s Cup campaign for us. It’s the final race after two weeks of build-up and inshore racing. We must switch from inshore to offshore mode within 24 hours, which means changing not just equipment but the mindset of the team. It’s going to be a great challenge, one of our biggest tests in many years of racing.”

Beneteau plans to stage the world premieres of both editions of its Swift Trawler 37 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 9-14. In Vieux Port, the French builder will showcase both the Sedan and Fly versions of the new entry model for the Swift Trawler series, which has produced 1,800 boats since it debuted in 2003.

The Flybridge version includes a low windshield on the flybridge, a helm station to starboard, and an integrated C-shaped sofa and table plus coolbox. The coachroof on the Sedan version offers a clean deck that can be used to store water toys and recreational gear or can be fitted with loose furniture like sunbeds and chairs. Both versions can include a bimini.

A successor to the Swift Trawler 35, the new 37 features a rising sheerline up to a powerful, flared and high signature bow, while the new reverse windscreen ensures better visibility and a more ‘professional trawler’ profile, enhanced by the long hull windows.

The windscreen forepeak can be fitted with solar panels or electric skylights, while solar panels can also be included on the side deck overhangs.

Aft, the ‘adaptive cockpit’ has increased space and offers the option of a sliding seat upgrade. Inside, the large C-shaped sofa to port can easily sit six people and convert to a double bunk with privacy curtain. To starboard, the C-shaped galley to starboard is bigger than on the Swift Trawler 35 and has a large fridge-freezer option and significantly more storage.

The lower helm is to starboard, while to port is a raised ‘passagemaker seat’ with a lift-up table that creates a work station beside the helm. Below is a forward owner’s cabin with en-suite access to a bathroom that doubles as the day head, while to port is a guest cabin with twin bunks.

The yacht has a 350nm range at 8 knots (with 10 per cent fuel reserve) with the 800-litre fuel tank and a Yanmar 6LY400 engine, while a 440mhp version is available as an upgrade.

Robert Chaffer, Beneteau’s Product Manager, said: “This latest stunning addition to the Beneteau Swift Trawler family is another bold step forward. We’ve been delighted to spend time listening to our customers and to create a modern passagemaker that meets their needs for life and freedom on the water.

Beneteau, Swift Trawler, Sedan, Fly, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer

“This not only means reliability and performance but ensuring the Swift Trawler continues to offer the perfect space for family living and fun, from well-stocked fridges to cabins packed with gear and stowage for extended cruising. We’re determined to innovate and evolve our products, and we’re excited to see the reaction of our customers to this beautiful passagemaker.”

New Swan 51 hits the water

Designed by German Frers more than four decades since his first Swan 51, the latest edition will debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

Nautor Swan, represented by Simpson Marine in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan), has launched the new Swan 51, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival (September 9-14). German Frers designed the yacht more than 40 years after his first design for Nautor Swan, the Swan 51 that launched in 1981, began an ongoing collaboration that has lasted over four decades.

The new Swan 51 is also the result of Nautor Swan’s experience of building around 70 yachts between 48-55ft in recent years. One of the key refinements is the mast position, now set further aft towards the centre of the yacht. This adjustment enhances the yacht’s balance and performance, contributing to a more refined and responsive sailing experience, according to Nautor Swan.

Nautor Swan, Asia-Pacific, Swan 51, Simpson Marine, German Frers, Misa Poggi, Cannes Yachting Festival

The twin-rudder configuration allows the yacht to remain balanced, preventing any tendency to broach even while steering at a 20-degree heeling angle, at which the hull is optimised to provide maximum performance. The rudder stocks are both mounted in a sealed waterproof compartment to minimise any possible damage or flooding following a collision at sea.

The dual-rudder configuration also allows access to shallower anchorages when in cruising mode, as does the optional shallow draught keel (2.05m) compared to the standard keel (2.45m). An optional 3.2m performance keel is also available. A bow thruster is fitted as standard to enable low-speed manoeuvring and docking.

The fixed bowsprit also houses the anchor, which is set well forward of the bow to avoid damage on hoisting, while a long, voluminous sail locker includes anti-torsion cable. Aft, an optional double-action transom provides a maxi-style swim platform and simplifies tender storage in the stern garage.

Nautor Swan, Asia-Pacific, Swan 51, Simpson Marine, German Frers, Misa Poggi, Cannes Yachting Festival

The coachroof shape is the latest evolution of the new Frers design, combining the classic Swan wedge coachroof – first introduced in 1970 – with all the modern features, including housing for a self-tacking track, seven opening hatches, and a garage for the sprayhood.

The cockpit size exceeds the average space of a 50ft yacht due to an innovative wide-body coaming design. According to Nautor Swan, the usable width is comparable to that of a 60-footer, without compromising the functionality of the side decks. It allows for the installation of two flexible tables, which can be converted into sunbathing areas or combined into a single table seating up to 10.

The Swan 51 is also available in a Sport version featuring a 1.5m taller carbon mast – to support a 161.2sqm mainsail – and deeper keel, along with interior layout options that allow for customisation. Running backstays are also available as an alternative to fixed ones when a square-top mainsail is selected.

Nautor Swan, Asia-Pacific, Swan 51, Simpson Marine, German Frers, Misa Poggi, Cannes Yachting Festival

Below deck, the saloon is illuminated by natural light through hull and deck apertures, while the chart table, saloon table and seating configurations can be tailored to suit owner preferences. The galley adopts the design approach seen in the Swan 48 and 55.

The three-cabin layout includes the owner’s en-suite cabin forward and two aft guest cabins that share a spacious head and shower. The sound-proofed engine room is designed for easy access and maintenance, with dedicated space for an optional generator.

The interior styling by Misa Poggi includes a choice of four decors: Swan Soul, Scandi Vision, Blue Genoa and Velvet Vibe. nautorswan.com

Pershing celebrates 40th anniversary in Capri

A selection of Pershing’s X and GTX models and F1 driver George Russell were among the star attractions at the spectacular three-day event.

Pershing celebrated its 40th anniversary since its founding in Mondolfo with a three-day event in Capri featuring adventures aboard Pershing yachts and elegant evenings at renowned restaurants on the island and along the coast.

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Capri’s majestic Faraglioni rock formations and the clear waters of the Gulf of Naples, the event was endorsed by the Municipality of Capri and featured a lively gathering of Pershing yacht owners including Formula 1 driver George Russell, who recently became the owner of a 6X.

The event opened with the presentation of the new GTX70 and a spectacular light show featuring 300 drones, which guests were able to admire from La Canzone del Mare restaurant, where guest star Gianluigi Lembo of the band Anema e Core gave a live performance.

The following day, guests had lunch in Nerano, at Antonio Mellino’s famous Quattro Passi. In the evening, there were two dinner venues in Capri: the historic Il Riccio, and a-Ma-Re Capri, chef Franco Pepe’s signature pizzeria and seafront restaurant.

During the days, Pershing owners took to the turquoise waters around Capri, offering a breathtaking spectacle featuring 6Xs, 7Xs and 8Xs alongside the GTX116 and GTX70 from the Sport Utility Yachts range. Event partners included Flexjet, Marchesi Antinori, Murphy&Nye and Seabob.

Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group’s CEO, said: “Celebrating Pershing’s 40th anniversary in Capri – a unique island in the very heart of the Mediterranean – had a special meaning. Capri is pure beauty, like our boats, and the ideal setting for an extraordinary event that brought together entertainment, innovation and passion.

Alberto Galassi and George Russell

“Against a breathtaking natural backdrop, we told the story of an adventure lived in the fast lane: 40 years of incomparable style, comfort and thrilling performance. Emotions that only owners at the helm of a Pershing can truly understand. This event will live forever in the eyes and memories of everyone who was there, and above all in the glorious history of our brand.”

The Monaco Yacht Show (September 24-27) has unveiled its programme of conferences and round-table discussions addressing themes shaping the future of the yachting industry, which have all been brought together under the Monaco Yacht Summit banner.

The Monaco Yacht Summit is conceived as an open space for dialogue, designed to encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience among participants. It brings together industry experts, engineers, designers, yacht owners and buyers, along with their representatives, for a series of conferences, panel discussions and thematic sessions, with the aim of shedding light on market trends and anticipating future developments.

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the Monaco Yacht Show, said: “The Monaco Yacht Summit aims to play a leading role in shaping the future of the yachting industry by building bridges between client expectations, industry challenges, and broader societal topics linked to yachting such as technological innovation in service of environmental sustainability. Our objective is to bring together all stakeholders in yachting to engage in a collective reflection on the future of our sector.”

The show’s opening conference will be held from 10.30-11.30am on the opening day, September 24 (Wednesday). This opening session will set the tone for the show’s discussions, with a particular focus on sustainability in yachting. Leading experts will share insights into ongoing initiatives, environmental challenges, and practical prospects for a more responsible future.

On the same day, there will also be a film screening of Ocean with David Attenborough in the presence of Toby Nowlan, the film’s director. The documentary explores the beauty, diversity and fragility of the oceans, aiming to raise awareness of the need for their preservation.

There will also be thematic events throughout the four-day Monaco Yacht Show. The programme will include panel discussions on topics such as design innovation and environmental sustainability in yachting, organised in partnership with the specialist media outlet SuperYacht Times.

Monaco Yacht Summit conferences will take place in the MYS Conference Hall, located at virage Louis Chiron on Port Hercule, and sponsored by Isoclima. The specific themes of the Monaco Yacht Summit will be officially announced in August.

The Beneteau brand alone could stage upwards of six world premieres at the 48th Cannes Yachting Festival, which will be held across the Vieux Port and Port Canto sites from September 9-14.

The French builder’s line-up of global debuts includes its new-generation Gran Turismo 35 and 40 (Alpine version), the first two models from its refreshed line of ‘crossover express cruisers’.

Beneteau’s other new motoryachts will be the Swift Trawler 37, shown in its Sedan and Fly versions, and the Grand Trawler 63. The Swift Trawler 41 and 54 will round out the brand’s motoryacht display at Vieux Port.

In Port Canto, the shipyard will debut the Oceanis 47 and 52 sailing yachts, the first two models from the eighth generation of Oceanis cruisers, and will also show the Oceanis 40.1, Oceanis Yacht 60, First 36 and First 53. Also in Port Canto, Beneteau’s dayboat display will include the Antares 9 (new), 11 Fly and 12, Flyer 9 Sundeck and Flyer 10.

Among other Groupe Beneteau brands, Jeanneau will stage the world premiere of the Sun Odyssey 415 sailing yacht, while its motorboat display will include new Cap Camarat and Merry Fisher models.

Prestige will host the global debut of its M7 multihull motoryacht, which will be shown with the M48, while the M8 – the 65ft flagship of the M-Line – will be available to view outside the show. The brand also expects to show all three models from its refreshed F-Line of flybridge monohull motoryachts, from the F4.3 that debuted at Boot Dusseldorf in January to the F4.9 and F5.7.

Lagoon Eighty 2 in build

Lagoon will have one of the show’s most high-profile debuts as it stages the world premiere of its flagship Eighty 2 sailing catamaran, which succeeds the hugely popular Seventy 7 that debuted at the show in 2016.

The Eighty 2 could be among eight Lagoon catamarans in Port Canto, including the new entry-model Lagoon 38, which had its world premiere at April’s International Multihull Show in La Grande Motte. Lagoon’s other models in Port Canto comprise the 43, 46 Iconic, 51 Iconic, 55, 60 and Sixty 5.

Sister brand Excess will show its 11 Hybrid, 13 and 14 models, with the middle model also fresh from her world premiere at La Grande Motte in April.

Fountaine Pajot Power 80

Among other French brands, Fountaine Pajot world premieres will include the Power 80, based on the same hull as the Thira 80 sail cat, as well as the ‘New 41’ and ‘New 44’ sailing catamarans.

Much was expected of the wallyrocket51, Wally’s first ‘pure racing yacht’. So far, much has been delivered. Conceived as an owner-driver one-class design but optimised to be competitive under IRC/ORC rules, the wallyrocket51 made its racing debut at this year’s Tre Golfi Sailing Week in the Gulf of Naples, which in 2027 will host the 38th America’s Cup.

Owned by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati and racing as Team Django, the wallyrocket51 won three out of four races to secure the National Championship for Central and Southern Tyrrhenian to the delight of Argentine strategist Guillermo Parada and Italian tactician Vasco Vascotto – a 28-time world champion – who have both consulted on the development of the wallyrocket51 since its inception.

“It’s a fantastic feeling because it has been a long journey from the first concept of this boat – designing it, building it, launching it, and making sure every detail was right,” said Parada, who has raced with Vascotto for 15 years on the TP52 circuit – notably with Azzurra – and on maxis.

“Seeing the concept work and the boat perform as expected, and feeling it improve every day was hugely rewarding. It was a great regatta for us.”

BIG AMBITIONS

Summer events for Team Django include the Cowes Dinard St Malo Race, Admiral’s Cup and Rolex Fastnet Race, all organised by the UK-based Royal Ocean Racing Club. It’s an imposing programme, but the speed, efficiency and racing capabilities shown by the wallyrocket51 in Sorrento revealed a boat that has so far lived up to expectations.

Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and Chief Designer, and Ferretti Group announced the wallyrocket51 concept back in 2023, as they aimed to create a 50ft race boat suitable for both one-design and fleet racing. Conceived to switch between manual-powered fleet and electric-powered one-design racing modes, the 15.5m racer was also designed to be raced with reduced crew of 11.

“When I founded Wally [in 1994], I wanted to create sailboats that could be both very comfortable and easy for cruising but also very fast for racing. Over the past 30 years, we’ve certainly achieved this. However, today, in our opinion, the market is changing, splitting between owners who want to cruise and those who want to race – and race in a more professional way,” Bassani said.

“That’s why we decided to build a one-design boat, and for that there’s no better size than around 50ft. We think the one-design idea will be very appealing to a wide range of owners as not only will the boat be lightning fast but also the life of the boat is much longer – you don’t have a new, faster boat coming every year.”

HULL TECHNOLOGY

For the hull design, Wally turned to racing maestros Botin Partners Naval Architecture, based in Santander on Spain’s north coast.

Even with Botin’s extensive experience developing TP52s and other 50ft race boats, Wally pushed them to innovate. Botin responded with a yacht that weighs just 6.25 tonnes, with the ultra-low displacement boosting downwind speed and leading to a full rethink of sail plan, hull shape and keel-bulb design.

Wally, wallyrocket51, Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, Guillermo Parada, Vasco Vascotto, Tre Golfi Sailing Week, Cowes Dinard St Malo Race, Admiral’s Cup, Rolex Fastnet Race, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Luca Bassani, Ferretti Group, Botin Partners Naval Architecture, Santa Maria Magnolfi, Pure Design & Engineering

The hull incorporates a state-of-the-art water ballast system providing 640 litres per side across fore and aft tanks, allowing for fore-aft trim variations. The system can fill the tanks in a minute, and it only takes six or seven seconds to transfer the water from one side to the other when tacking.

The collaboration with Botin Partners also shaped the deck layout and integrated features, which include a power-operated hydraulic system and a battery pack that will likely be used for the one-design class racing, to make it as accessible as possible for owners.

Making the hydraulic winches and battery pack removable – with ‘coffee grinders’ delivering manual power to the Harken Air winches – ensures the wallyrocket51 can be raced in IRC and ORC fleets without rating penalty.

Adolfo Carrau, Partner and Designer at Botin Partners, said: “We designed this boat to be a good all-rounder that should be competitive in most conditions. The boat is also meant to be competitive in any part of the world. Structurally it has been engineered since day one for offshore races. Having said that, like most light displacement racers, it will be a lot of fun sending it downwind in big breeze.”

WALLY STYLE, PURE BUILD

While Botin Partners’ work underpins the wallyrocket51’s performance and race functionality, Wally wanted to ensure the design was unmistakeably Wally. That responsibility fell in part to the Milan-based Santa Maria Magnolfi studio, which worked with Botin Partners and Wally to incorporate style elements without compromising any aspect of her racing ability.

In this context, design played a crucial role not just in terms of beauty but as fully integrated functionality. Every stylistic choice had to meet specific sailing requirements, like weight reduction and surface optimisation.

Key elements like the inverted sheerline, the stern design inspired by Wally’s signature air intakes, and a sportier take on the steering wheel used in larger models like the wallywind110 all reinforce the wallyrocket51’s connection to the Wally family.

Building such an extreme and lightweight racer demands precision, with extremely tight construction tolerances, so Wally turned to Pure Design & Engineering in New Zealand to oversee the project and ensure the highest engineering standards.

The hull was built using pre-preg carbon with Corecell and Nomex cores – advanced materials that ensure lightness and strength. On a yacht so compact and light, even a 3 per cent margin in the weight of the hull’s composite materials can translate into a critical difference of around 36kg.

Parada and Vascotto were also firmly behind the collaboration with Pure Engineering. “We’ve had a long, open relationship with Botin and the design team, which makes collaboration smooth and honest, crucial when the goal is to make the boat faster and better,” Parada said.

TALL RIG, HIGH SPEEDS

In terms of rigging, a 94sqm square-top mainsail off the Southern Spars rig – held up with Future Fibres’ AEROsix hybrid carbon rigging – contributes to 160sqm of upwind sail area, while a 265sqm gennaker helps give 360sqm of downwind sail area. It’s a tall rig relative to its size and incorporates many innovations from recent years.

Sail trials showed it to be ‘lightning fast’ and a sensational yacht to helm, light on the wheel but responsive enough to give that instantly engaging, fingertip feel. Upwind, the wallyrocket51 has shown exceptional pointing ability while sailing fast. Downwind, the ‘rocketship’ is already living up to its name, delivering a scintillating ride even in lighter airs with the asymmetric flying.

Unlike some niche race boat designs, the wallyrocket51 doesn’t only excel on windward-leeward but has been conceived to take on everything an owner could throw at it.

Vascotto has been delighted with the boat’s performances, having been part of the development team exploring the yacht’s capabilities by sailing against target boat speed numbers set by other 50ft racers.

“We wanted to create a boat that could make owners and sailors happy,” the Italian said. “We wanted to incorporate all the things they say they want when you have a beer with them after racing. These include a yacht that holds its value, is as stylish as a Wally, is faster than anything else out there, and still has a controllable budget. And every day that we sail the boat, in different conditions, confirms we got the project right.”

Although only the first hull is on the water to date, Parada is confident of the wallyrocket51’s appeal within the sailing community. “I believe it could appeal to a wide range of owners of equivalent classes, or even maxi yacht owners looking for something nimbler and fun to race with friends,” he said.

Parada, Vascotto and co are now hoping the first wallyrocket51 will continue to impress in a summer programme that includes a lot of racing out of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A highlight is the biennial Rolex Fastnet Race, now a 695nm route from Cowes, around Fastnet Rock off Ireland’s south coast, and finishing in Cherbourg, France.

“As a crew, and by mindset, we love challenges, and perhaps the most difficult and important ones are the Admiral’s Cup and Rolex Fastnet Race,” Vascotto said.

“Even though the wallyrocket51 was created as a one-design, we’ve always wanted to prove it could compete anywhere – in ORC, IRC and long-distance races. It’s not a boat built for these events, but we’ll do everything we can to prove that it can be competitive there, too.”

Richard Allen, CEO, Boat Lagoon Yachting

The maritime industry is always evolving, and in Asia it changes quickly. As Chief Executive Officer of Boat Lagoon Yachting, my new role marks a significant milestone not only in my career but also in the journey of this long-established company. This opportunity brings with it immense excitement and responsibility, and the promise of a transformative future.

After 12 years in Hong Kong with Simpson Marine, leading the company as it transitioned from a multi-brand dealership to part of the Sanlorenzo shipyard in Italy, I was presented with the opportunity to try something new. I moved to Thailand earlier this year and began my new role with Boat Lagoon Yachting in April.

Boat Lagoon Yachting is recognised for its commitment to quality and its status as the most prominent yacht dealership and service provider in Southeast Asia. As CEO, my aim is to guide the company towards greater success and longevity, along with implementing some strategic organisation, processes and systems.

COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION

As I reflect on the lessons learned from my previous experiences, I’m reminded of the importance of adaptability and foresight in this constantly evolving industry. The maritime sector is a dynamic realm, where trends shift rapidly and customer expectations grow ever more sophisticated. This realisation has motivated me to embrace this new chapter with a clear vision: to position Boat Lagoon Yachting as a leader not only in excellence but also in innovation and customer experience.

Boat Lagoon Yachting won Regional Dealer in Asia at the Yacht Style Awards in April 2025

Technological advancements are changing the way we navigate, design and experience maritime leisure. Under my leadership, Boat Lagoon Yachting will continue to be at the forefront of innovation. With yacht manufacturers developing new propulsion systems and onboard amenities, we must adapt to provide the support and infrastructure for these new technologies.

By integrating smart systems, sustainable energy solutions and advanced navigation, we will aim to redefine luxury yachting for the modern era.

INVESTMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY

One of the pillars of our future growth lies in sustainability. As environmental concerns rise globally, the yachting sector must adapt to meet the challenges of eco-conscious consumers. With many yachts now equipped with hybrid engines and eco-friendly materials, we will help lead the charge in creating a greener maritime industry and protecting the oceans, which are the playgrounds of our industry.

Alongside this, we will continue to foster our long-established CRM (customer relationship management) initiatives through events such as the BLY Phuket Rendezvous, where our yacht owners from across Southeast Asia gather annually in both Phuket – a world-renowned yachting destination – and Singapore.

Richard Allen, Boat Lagoon Yachting, CEO, Simpson Marine, BLY Phuket Rendezvous, Fairview Yachting, Bali, Simpson Yacht Charter

Held since 2011, these occasions are more than just celebrations of the yachting lifestyle. They also serve as meaningful opportunities for our owners to come together and participate in CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities, giving back to the coastal communities that welcome us.

EXPANDING THE NETWORK

Boat Lagoon Yachting has already established itself as a most trusted name in Asia and beyond. However, expansion is key to tapping into new markets and reaching a broader audience. We will focus on strengthening our presence in existing regions while exploring opportunities in emerging markets throughout Asia.

Boat Lagoon Yachting has represented Princess in Southeast Asia since 1994, selling hundreds of the British builder’s yachts into the region. And the numbers will continue to grow, with some of our clients now owning their sixth or seventh Princess yacht, a testament to Boat Lagoon Yachting’s customer service and support of its owners. It’s also a testament to Princess, as it continues to evolve to keep up with clients’ demands.

With Jeanneau and Sacs, our other long-term partners, we will continue to provide a wide selection of yachts available to all our clientele, and will grow our network throughout the region.

Customers have always been the heart of Boat Lagoon Yachting, and their satisfaction defines our success. As CEO, I prioritise the enhancement of customer service across all touchpoints. This includes creating personalised services, offering exclusive experiences, and ensuring seamless transactions for our buyers and charterers.

From the first enquiry to the final sale, we want every interaction to be imbued with excellence. In addition, we’re looking at other forms of ownership such as boat clubs, charter management, leasing and fractional ownership. We already have some experience of this with one of our partners, Flow Yacht Club, which I’m keen to see develop.

Richard Allen, Boat Lagoon Yachting, CEO, Simpson Marine, BLY Phuket Rendezvous, Fairview Yachting, Bali, Simpson Yacht Charter

The strength of any organisation lies in its people. Building a cohesive, motivated and skilled team is at the forefront of my plans. Training programmes, leadership development and fostering a culture of innovation and teamwork will ensure Boat Lagoon Yachting remains a magnet for top talent. Collaboration and shared vision will drive the company forward, reinforcing our position as an industry leader.

CHARTER OPPORTUNITIES

I’ve had a long history with yacht charter, from my early days at Sunsail and later with Simpson Marine. After leaving the latter last year, I established Fairview Yachting. Once the acquisition of Simpson Marine by Sanlorenzo was completed, it was clear that part of the charter business I had set up in 2013 in Thailand was not in the shipyard’s long-term plans.

Following some discussions, it was agreed I could buy the Simpson Yacht Charter Thailand business that I had established and overseen for over a decade. My business partner at Fairview Yachting is Andy Byham, who has over 20 years of experience running a successful charter company and a corporate events business in the UK. He comes out to Phuket every couple of months.

The SYC charter business is run by the existing team, who are managing the day-to-day sales and operations, and relishing the greater responsibility. In fact, the business has grown, with 15 staff now handling sales and looking after the charter fleet and our owners.

As part of the growth of the business and ensuring a good supply of new yachts joining the fleet from time to time, it was important to represent one of the leading catamaran brands. Recently, Fairview Yachting was fortunate to be able to take on the Bali Catamarans dealership for Thailand and Hong Kong.

Already I’ve seen ways that Fairview Yachting can cooperate with Boat Lagoon Yachting and its own charter division, Boat Lagoon Cruises, which is focused principally on day charters in larger power boats. Fairview is a more traditional charter business, with bare boats and predominantly sailing catamarans chartering for several days or even weeks, so they have different business models.

Richard Allen, Boat Lagoon Yachting, CEO, Simpson Marine, BLY Phuket Rendezvous, Fairview Yachting, Bali, Simpson Yacht Charter

Over time, we may see closer collaboration between the two companies, but for now they run independently. Both have their own management teams, and both are looking to grow and bring more clients from around the world to experience what a great destination Thailand is as a yachting hub.

LOOKING AHEAD

As I embark on my new journey, I see a future where Boat Lagoon Yachting is not only a leader in luxury yachting but also a pioneer in innovation. To ensure an even greater level of care for our clients, we’ve already agreed to create a new division within the company to cater for aftersales and service, which will also be available to other yacht owners in the region.

Our goal is to redefine the industry standards, explore uncharted waters, and inspire the next generation of yacht enthusiasts. Together, with a talented team and the support of our loyal customers, I’m confident Boat Lagoon Yachting will set sail toward a promising and prosperous future.

I thank Vrit Yongsakul for giving me this opportunity. My appointment is more than a personal achievement; it’s the beginning of a new chapter for Boat Lagoon Yachting. With bold ambitions, a commitment to excellence and a vision for sustainable growth, I am honoured to lead this remarkable organisation into its next era. The waters ahead are vast and full of promise, and I’m eager to navigate them with passion, perseverance and purpose.

Anders Kurtén, CEO, Fraser

In Fraser’s ‘Market Insight’ for Issue 84 of Yacht Style, CEO Anders Kurtén states that bookings for the 2025 summer season have been strong this year, with a very active market. “We are expecting the number of charters for the year to easily match, and probably exceed, 2024 bookings,” he says.

In terms of destinations, the most popular regions remain broadly similar to previous years, with the Mediterranean and Caribbean accounting for almost 75 per cent of Fraser’s total bookings for 2025. Drilling down into specific cruising grounds, Corsica and Sardinia are very popular this year, as is the Amalfi Coast.

“We are also receiving, as ever, a huge amount of interest in Greece, where Fraser is privileged to manage for charter the highest-valued fleet of Greek charter yachts in the world today,” Kurtén says.

“The spring season saw significant interest in Costa Rica, which is a relatively new area for yachting and attracting adventurous clients.”

Kurtén also noted that new charter yachts are in particular demand due to the inclusion of greater waterside areas, storage for toys, and other lifestyle and wellness facilities.

“Looking at trends in charter, we have noted in recent years a strong demand from charterers for modern, brand-new yachts, as clients are now more interested in staying on board to enjoy the water toys, food, service and amenities.”
