Azimut Grande 36 Metri

Azimut followed up the 2021 launch of its flagship Grande Trideck with two new Grande superyachts in 2022, with the first hulls of the 36 Metri and 26 Metri debuting at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Both feature exterior styling by Alberto Mancini and interiors by Achille Salvagni, the same designers behind the 38m Trideck, which was joined by the Grande 36 Metri at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Azimut’s second-biggest model, the 116ft Grande 36 Metri is distinguished by a semi-walkaround upper deck, which runs on the same level from the stern almost to the tip of the bow. The skylounge side doors can slide out of view, transforming the upper deck into a huge open space offering panoramic views.

Azimut Grande 26 Metri

The Grande 26 Metri’s signature feature is the Deck2Deck™ terrace, where the transom rises to adjoin the main deck and expand the cockpit, which can be used either as a lounge or dining area. Convertible furniture adds to the flexibility, while a main-deck owner’s suite with full-height windows is among other features.

The 86-footer is fitted with the new 4600 Pod propulsion system developed by ZF and, like the 36 Metri, is among Azimut’s new generation of Low Emission Yachts (click for article).

Azimut Magellano 30 Metri

The Magellano 30 Metri (click for article) is Azimut’s other major new model in 2022 and is the new flagship of the builder’s long-range series. The 97ft model features exterior styling by Ken Freivokh and interior design by Vincenzo De Cotiis, the same design team behind the Magellano 25 Metri released in late 2020.

Azimut’s newcomers also include the updated Magellano 66, a 20m model that had its debut at this year’s Venice Boat Show, and features in-house exterior and interior design.

Sister company Benetti has also had an exciting year for new models, staging the global debuts of the Oasis 34M and B.Yond 37M at Cannes, while premiere at Monaco included the B.Now 50M Iryna.

Benetti B.Yond 37M

The steel-hulled B.Yond 37M has a remarkable five decks and was conceived by Azimut-Benetti owner Paolo Vitelli and designed by the late Stefano Righini, who passed away in October 2021 having worked with Vitelli since the 1980s. While the enormous space offered by five decks is an obvious appeal, Benetti is proudest of the model’s technology, describing it as “the greenest model ever built in its class”.

The E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy optimises onboard energy consumption and results in “unprecedented CO2 and NOx emissions reductions for a yacht in this category”, Benetti states. The system combines with SCR catalytic filters, a gas-control technology that uses a urea-based liquid solution, while the yacht has four operating modes including Full Electric for zero-emission navigation.

Benetti Oasis 34M

The Oasis 34M is the little sister of the Oasis 40M, a 134-footer with tremendous sales around the world including in Asia-Pacific.

Also featuring exterior design by UK firm RWD and an interior by New York-based Bonetti & Kozerski, the 112ft Oasis 34M is similarly distinguished by the ‘Oasis Deck’, with opening wings either side of a beach area featuring an infinity pool integrated into the sunbathing and lounge area.

Benetti B.Now 50M

A world premiere at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, the B.Now 50M (click for article) is the first in a family of four steel models, which also includes the B.Now 60M, B.Now 67M and B.Now 72M. All feature exterior design by UK-based studio RWD and are available with a traditional aft deck or the Oasis Deck® pioneered by the shipyard’s Oasis 40M.

Benetti announced at Monaco that 16 units of the B.Now 50M had been sold as of late September, making it “the world’s most popular 50m model”. It also stated that delivery times are 30 per cent shorter than market standards due to advanced construction technology and hull engineering solutions.

Custom Line 140’

The new Custom Line 140’ is the builder’s largest to date and was the biggest of the Ferretti Group’s world premieres at Cannes before showing at Monaco. Compared to Custom Line’s Navetta 42 displacement yacht, the flagship 140’ is longer (42.6m) and wider (8.4m), and larger, with a volume close to 400GT.

A tri-deck planing yacht with a top speed over 21 knots, the 140’ is also the third Custom Line yacht with exterior styling by Francesco Paszkowski Design and interiors by Margherita Casprini. Ferretti Group Asia Pacific recently announced the sale of a first Custom Line 140’ to Asia (click for article).

Riva Anniversario

Riva has debuted multiple models this year as it celebrates its 180th anniversary, a landmark that inspired the Anniversario.

The 33-footer pays tribute to the legendary Aquarama and has a limited-edition run of just 18 boats. The Anniversario had a private debut at Riva’s anniversary gala in Venice before appearing at Cannes with several other new models in a huge Ferretti Group display.

Riva 76’ Bahamas Super

New Riva models – all designed by Officina Italiana Design co-founders Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta – include the 76’ Bahamas Super (click for article) and the 102’ Corsaro Super, both upgrades of previous models.

Based on the 100’ Corsaro that debuted in Hong Kong in 2017, the 102’ Corsaro Super’s changes are significant, with the superstructure and hull renewed, glazing increased and aft glass fashion plates added.

Riva 102’ Corsaro Super

Two saloon layouts are now available, but the most notable change is a redesign of the stern area on the main deck, now configured as an extended 35sqm beach club and part of almost 100sqm of liveable open-air spaces. Options include special gunwales that swing out on either side of the main deck to create terraces.

Riva 130’ Bellissima

Riva’s new pride and joy is the 130’ Bellissima, a 40m yacht with an almost 8m beam. Bellissima is the first planing yacht in the builder’s Flybridge range to extend across three full decks, with a full-widebody design, while remaining under 300GT.

Ferretti Yachts 860

The Ferretti Yachts 860 is another world premiere from Cannes. The builder’s third-biggest model behind the 920 and flagship 1000 is also the third featuring both exterior design by architect Filippo Salvetti and an interior by IdeaeItalia. Available in Classic or Contemporary ‘moods’, the interior includes Art Deco-inspired curves and a large helical staircase linking the main and lower decks.

The Wallypower58 debuted at the Venice Boat Show and appeared at Cannes, where Wally founder Luca Bassani was again hosting sea trials. It’s the first wallypower model launched by Ferretti Group since it bought Wally and takes design cues from the recent wallytender48 and wallytender43, such as the angular profile, wraparound fender and single-chine hull.

Foldout sides expand the aft deck, while interior highlights include ‘magic portholes’ on each side, with 4K-resolution cameras broadcasting the outside view on port and starboard screens in the saloon.

SMART PERFORMERS
Sanlorenzo’s large display at Cannes included the world premieres of the pioneering SP110 open coupé and SD90. Featuring a sub-24m hull and an overall length of almost 28m, the SD90 is the new entry-level model of the builder’s SD line of semi-displacement shuttles, which also includes the SD96 and SD118.

Yacht Style, New Models, 2022, Motor Yachts, Italy, Azimut, Grande, Magellano, Benetti, Oasis, B.Now, B.Yond, Ferretti Group, Custom Line, 140’, Riva, Bahamas, Anniversario, Corsaro, Bellissima, Sanlorenzo, SP110, SD90, Bluegame, BG54, Absolute, 56 Fly, Navetta 75, Cannes Yachting Festival, Monaco Yacht Show, world, premiere, global, debut

Sanlorenzo SD90

The SD90 features exterior lines by Bernardo Zuccon and interior design by Patricia Urquiola, while Philippe Briand was also involved in research for a model that has a ‘sustainable hybrid’ propulsion system designed in collaboration with Siemens.

The eye-catching SP110 kicks off a new ‘smart performance’ range for Sanlorenzo and features input by Zuccon for the exteriors, Tilli Antonelli overseeing the SP range, Marco Arnaboldi for the hull design and Piero Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, for the interiors.

Sanlorenzo SP110

Featuring an overall length of 33m and a beam of over 8m, the SP110 (click for Review) is notable for its huge aft deck, as seen on the SX series, while introducing a clever fold-down swim platform that reveals integrated steps.

The model has a lower-deck saloon like the BGX models and BG72 from sister brand Bluegame, yet takes this a step further with an atrium-style, two-level interior. Advanced technology includes a fractional three-engine propulsion system, so the boat can move using just one engine, a pair or all three.

Bluegame BG54

Bluegame’s newest model is the BG54 (click for Review), which debuted at this year’s Palma International Boat Show and exhibited at Cannes. The 54-footer with an almost 16ft beam sits between the BG42 and BG62 models that helped relaunch the brand under Sanlorenzo’s ownership.

Like Bluegame’s other new models, the BG54 features a huge aft swim platform and Volvo Penta IPS, which allows the engines to sit below the aft platform and create more room inside the lower deck, which has a spacious galley area between the forward and midships cabins.

Absolute Navetta 75 at 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival

Absolute’s two new models for 2022 both debuted at Cannes and includes its flagship Navetta 75, which features the builder’s now-signature cockpit terrace with modular furniture, stainless-steel guardrail and glazed balustrade. Other Absolute signatures include the master stateroom forward on the lower deck.

The builder’s other premiere was the Absolute 56 Fly (click for Review), a model already in Hong Kong. Like the Navetta 75 and other recent models including the 60 Fly, the 56 has a clear aft cockpit with modular furniture and transparent balustrade, increasing connectivity to the swim platform and water.

Yacht Style, New Models, 2022, Motor Yachts, Italy, Azimut, Grande, Magellano, Benetti, Oasis, B.Now, B.Yond, Ferretti Group, Custom Line, 140’, Riva, Bahamas, Anniversario, Corsaro, Bellissima, Sanlorenzo, SP110, SD90, Bluegame, BG54, Absolute, 56 Fly, Navetta 75, Cannes Yachting Festival, Monaco Yacht Show, world, premiere, global, debut

Absolute 56 Fly

Other features include opening saloon windows and a full-beam beam owner’s cabin forward on the lower deck, which also has a twin cabin and a full-beam VIP that could pass for a master suite. Absolute is offering the option of solar panels in the hard top of its new models.

The next chapter of the series focuses on new motor yachts by British builders.

As the latest model by the young Groupe Beneteau brand, the twin-helm Excess 14 is the best example yet of the company’s DNA, delivering the ‘sensations of sailing’ and a sporty vibe with a bright interior and creative accommodation options. By Geoffroy Langlade.

The standard rig includes a square-top mainsail and overlapping genoa, while a Code 0 is optional

Excess has been fine-tuning its designs since it entered the market in 2019 with the launches of the Excess 12 and Excess 15. The latter remains the flagship of the young brand owned by Groupe Beneteau, whose portfolio includes Lagoon, the world’s most prolific pleasure catamaran builder with about 600 units a year.

However, Groupe Beneteau created Excess to help fill a gap in the market between luxury cruising cats and – at the other end of the spectrum – the stripped-down, high-tech racing cats.

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

Skippers can enjoy the sensation of sailing

Excess doesn’t claim to offer racer-style performance, but is instead focused on giving owners the feeling of sailing fast, stating that catamarans should not be restricted to a choice between comfort or sensations. As such, the signature helms at the aft end of each hull offer wind in the hair, sea spray and the sound of lapping water, all while staying connected to family and friends in the cockpit.

After using modified Lagoon moulds for the hulls of the Excess 12 (38ft hull) and 15 (47ft hull), the builder then developed the all-new Excess 11 (36ft hull), with the accomplished entry-level model debuting at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2020.

The Excess 14 features naval architecture by VPLP

All three models have since made it to Asia-Pacific. The first Excess 12 in Australia arrived in late 2020, while last year, Asia’s first Excess 11 was delivered to Japan and an Excess 15 sailed to New Zealand.

Back in France, Excess consolidated all its learnings and developments into its newest and most ambitious model yet – the Excess 14. The hull and exterior were again designed in collaboration with VPLP Design, renowned for its work in sailing monohulls and multihulls and a specialist in ocean racing, while Italy’s Nauta Design handled the interior.

Like all Excess models, the yacht has a helm station at the aft end of each hull

The Excess 14 had its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2022 and enjoyed a lot of attention for her sleek, sporty look and colourful touches, with bright orange popping up on the outdoor upholstery, steering wheels, ‘Excess 14’ logo and even the trim of the genoa.

“The Excess 14 is the pure concentration of the Excess DNA,” says Thibaut de Montvalon, the company’s Brand Director and former Managing Director of Groupe Beneteau Asia-Pacific based in Hong Kong.

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

The Excess 14 is designed for owners with a sporty lifestyle

“It’s a boat that’s fun, that’s lively. It’s a cruising catamaran with outstanding lines that have benefited from an understanding of ocean racing. And it required profound naval architectural work to come up with many innovative solutions, both in the charter and owner versions.”

With full-scale production starting next year, the first unit for Asia is scheduled to arrive in Japan by the end of 2023. Other Asia-Pacific deliveries include to Tahiti, also late next year, then to both Australia and New Zealand in the first half of 2024.

PURE EXCESS
The Excess 14 has a 44ft hull and an overall length starting from about 46ft, depending on the bowsprit and any stern appendages. It has a beam of almost 26ft and is just 7in slimmer than the flagship 15. The model therefore enters the very competitive 45ft catamaran sector populated in Asia by experienced competitors such as Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard and Bali.

The yacht features asymmetric hulls

First off, a major point of difference is the twin helms, an Excess signature inspired by monohulls. Each helm station has a Garmin screen and a bench seat, offers a good view of the sails and limits the length of the lines to offer more sensations to the helmsman.

Hervé Piveteau, Product Manager of Excess, says: “We put a lot of effort into reducing weight, optimising the sail area to weight ratio, and gains in the structural design. However, it’s not only about performance but about sensations.

“Our objective is that the skipper steering the boat will have the same sensations as they would have on a monohull. It’s all about sailing sensations.”

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

At anchor, the foredeck can be dressed with sunpads

On the Excess 14, all manoeuvres from the mast are handled on starboard, where two Harken winches also trim the genoa, while there’s just the winch for the genoa on port side. Both helms have direct contact with the deeper rudder blades, which increase the draught to 4ft 10in.

The rig includes a forward-stepped mast, low boom and a composite bowsprit, along with a square top mainsail and large overlapping genoa as standard, which provide an impressive sail area to displacement ratio. There’s even an optional Pulse Line package, which increases the upwind sail area from 123sqm to 135sqm.

The wide cockpit features a huge aft bench, dining area and chaise longue

Built in foam sandwich with carbon reinforcements, the Excess 14 includes a lower freeboard to reduce windage and an increased bridgedeck clearance for better passage through the water, while the hulls were designed asymmetrically with inverted and inclined bows to reduce interference drag.

LIGHT & BRIGHT
In terms of outdoor social areas, the cockpit features a wide sofa aft, an L-shaped sofa and a dining table to port, plus a facing settee or chaise longue to starboard. The foredeck is clean, but can be set up with a couple of sunpads with adjustable backrests. There’s also the option of a flybridge-style ‘skylounge’ on top of the coachroof, but this can only be used at anchor due to the low boom.

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

The indoor dining area in the saloon and alfresco dining area in the cockpit

Nauta Design worked on the interior, which is noticeably bright due to the clear, ‘untinted’ windows all around the saloon. There’s also the option for a through-breeze due to a pair of rectangular portholes at the front and one to port, above the cooking area.

“With Nauta, the goal was to maintain volume and good headroom, all this in a warm and bright-as ever interior design,” says Piveteau, who has been with Groupe Beneteau for over two decades. “We made no compromise on the internal comfort, whether it’s the headroom, volume of the cabins, the size of the berths, even the volume of the fridges.”

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

The interior starts with a full-width galley

The L-shaped galley to port also includes twin sinks and plenty of storage below and above, while there’s refrigeration and more storage on the starboard side. The dining table, an L-shaped sofa and loose chairs are forward, while to port is a pull-out chart table with storage underneath.

Accommodation options below include a symmetrical four-cabin ‘charter’ version, with each room boasting an en-suite bathroom with separate shower, while options include a crew cabin in each of the forepeaks.

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

In the three-cabin version, the master suite occupies most of the starboard hull

The three-cabin version includes a large master suite on the starboard side with an office in the middle and a bathroom forward. Further forward still is a utility room that can be used as a walk-in wardrobe or storage room for water sports equipment and gear, or can be set up with twin beds, ideal for a family with kids.

“This extra room gives the owner huge volume and a unique storage area that can become an extra cabin, offering fantastic versatility,” Piveteau says. “And the charter version with four ensuite bathrooms with separate showers and space for two crew cabins is a first for a 44-footer.”

Excess, 14, 11, 12, 15, catamaran, Cannes Yachting Festival, Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon, Boot Dusseldorf, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thibaut de Montvalon, VPLP Design, Nauta Design, Hervé Piveteau

The forward utility room can be a walk-in wardrobe, storage room or twin cabin

However, Piveteau ultimately doesn’t believe Excess is in competition with other cruising catamaran builders, believing that the bold newcomer is steering its own path in the multihull market.

“The Excess 14 is not a cruising catamaran,” he says. “It’s more of an attractive sailboat with two hulls. This is what we call the Excess DNA.”

What were the major changes to this year’s Thailand Charter Week compared to the first edition three years ago?
The yachting industry has received more support from the Thai Government. Yachting has been included in the country’s strategic marine tourism plan and has been a critical mechanism for restoring the economy through tourism.

The Thai Government has officially allowed foreign superyachts to do charter business since early 2021. As a result, there has been much interest from superyachts to charter in Thai waters. The show also had a lot of interest and had three 30m-plus superyachts (click for article), which showed significant growth from 2019.

What was the feedback from the Government Ministers, Tourism Authority of Thailand and Phuket authorities this year?
Mr Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, fully supported the Thailand Charter Week and the yachting industry (click for article). He has encouraged Thailand Charter Week to become bigger and better next year. Images, video and other media content from this year’s Thailand Charter Week will be used to promote Thailand’s marine tourism globally.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Phuket province have also helped establish Thailand Charter Week on the event calendar. Thailand Charter Week has become a significant event for Thailand’s marine tourism.

What were the best aspects of this year’s Thailand Charter Week?
Support from government and private companies increased and there was a wider of variety of businesses, not just yachting. It means the marine industry has widened and can be a part of other industry groups. The best part of this year’s edition was the cooperation between TYBA members, the Government, charter brokers and local agents.

Which parts of the Thailand Charter Week can be improved?
Announcing the event. We had limited time to prepare for this year’s Thailand Charter Week as there was still doubt about the exact plan to reopen Thailand to visitors and tourists. However, we expected to have more yachts and more international visitors. We will have more time to prepare for the 2023 edition. As organisers, we have already started a plan to make the event better.

Ditapong Thitadilok, President, TYBA, Thai Yachting Business Association, Thailand Charter Week, Thailand, Government, Phuket, Charter Week, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Tourism Authority of Thailand

Some potential exhibitors said they didn’t participate because all their yachts were being chartered. Do you think the Thailand Charter Week should be held at a different time?
We think this period is the best time for Thailand Charter Week. This year, some charter businesses were too busy because Thailand had just reopened fully since the Covid pandemic. We’re creating another marketing channel to allow companies and yachts that can’t attend Thailand Charter Week to communicate with visitors. Of course, all visitors can still contact the yachts, yacht management companies or central agents.

Sunseeker will display a bespoke 95 Yacht at the upcoming edition of Boot Düsseldorf (January 21-29, 2023), stating that it will be the largest yacht on display at the world’s biggest indoor boat show.

Sunseeker International and its appointed distributor, Sunseeker London Group have created the bespoke 95 Yacht for Meros Co-Ownership. The one-of-a-kind build will become the new flagship yacht in the Meros fleet and is designed specifically for co-ownership.

Sean Robertson, Sales and Marketing Director at Sunseeker International, said: “Our Bespoke service is best-in-class and we’re always exceptionally proud to bring a customised build to life. Our passion for excellence, together with a shared vision with Sunseeker London Group and Meros, has made way for this exceptional and completely bespoke build.”

Notable changes include a reimagined flybridge, inspired by the Sunseeker 90 Ocean. The stand-out wet bar has popular features including a barbecue, refrigerator and ice machine, while there’s extended seating for up to 12 guests. The new layout can also house a Jacuzzi and a personal watercraft (PWC), while other water toys on board include two Seabobs, an e-Foil, inflatables, wakeboards and a Williams Jet Tender.

The interior style is minimalist and modern, featuring neutral tones and contemporary textures. The guest accommodation retains the iconic triplex master suite and an additional four lower-deck guest cabins comprising two doubles and two convertible twins with pullman berths, for up to 12 guests.

The unique master suite is situated over three levels and includes a bedroom with a king-size bed and lounge seating. A beautiful staircase forward leads down to a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area, while beyond is a large en-suite bathroom.

Principino Eventi hosted the ‘Discover the House of Yachting’ event

Benetti held a Discover the House of Yachting event in Viareggio for more than 200 suppliers in the Tuscan shipyard’s value chain. The initiative at Principino Eventi was the first edition since 2018, with Benetti and its partners celebrating a year of extraordinary results and sharing opportunities for growth.

The Tuscan shipyard has a full order book until 2027 and 23 launches planned for the 2022-23 season, with a positive knock-on effect for the company’s supply chain. Studies have shown, for example, that the construction of a 40-50m boat involves over 70 different crafts, many of them represented at the Viareggio event and among the best in the industry.

Discover the House of Yachting was organised not only as a celebration but also as an opportunity to consolidate the partnerships that proved so strategic last season.

Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “An order book reaching so far into the future allows us to take a long-term view of the work to perform and to define our production plan with confidence. This translates into efficient production management and the ability to draw up plans with suppliers, because it’s essential to involve them in projects for the future and continue to grow together.”

Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group

To support future growth, the Group has devised a three-year investment plan totalling €130 million. The plan’s objectives include strengthening the production chain through process digitalisation and increasing integration between partners and the company with a view to ongoing long-term collaboration.

Davide Vernocchi, Benetti & Lusben Head of Procurement, said: “Almost all our supplier relationships are long-term and involve multiple generations in family-run businesses. This is because we look for partners who share our values, and because we are chosen in part for what Benetti represents: quality, efficiency and commitment to the major issues of environmental and social sustainability.”

Julien Solari: Singapore thriving as a superyacht hub

Julien Solari: Singapore thriving as a superyacht hub

SHARE

In a Column for YACHT STYLE Issue 68, Simpson Marine’s Julien Solari reveals how Singapore is living up to its reputation as one of Asia’s key yachting hubs, with Sanlorenzo driving a lot of the city’s superyacht activity.

Julien Solari, Singapore, superyacht, hub, Sanlorenzo, Asia, YACHT STYLE, Issue 68, ONE°15 Marina, Sentosa Cove, Lady Candy, Benetti, Double Haven, Feadship, Petra Tara, Admiral, Alloy, 46Steel, SD96, SX88, Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

One of Asia’s leading financial centres, Singapore is a fantastic place for superyachts to dock and prepare for further exploration of the region. With its ideal location in the heart of Southeast Asia, it allows for easy access to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Last year, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove – where Simpson Marine is based and has a dedicated Sanlorenzo Asia lounge – completed an upgrade and reconfiguration to increase the number of spaces for 80ft-plus superyachts from 15 to 33, including several 50m-plus berths in a dedicated superyacht area, facing the marina club.

This major project has significantly helped us to bring in more superyachts on a permanent basis, as berthing space is typically one of the major concerns of superyacht owners and captains in the region.

While there are many superyachts berthed at ONE°15 Marina including Lady Candy (Benetti), Double Haven (Feadship) and Petra Tara (Admiral), I am delighted to witness that Sanlorenzo superyachts currently take up almost half of the superyacht dock.

At present, Sanlorenzo superyachts include two 44.5m Alloy models, a 46Steel and an SD96, while an SX88 is joining them. One of the Alloy yachts features a custom layout, impeccable decoration by Christian Liaigre and a wide range of facilities that combine to give her owner an experience that might only be expected from a much larger yacht.

Among the Alloy model’s notable features is a 148sqm, three-level owner suite with a private terrace and pool. In recognition of her outstanding design, the Alloy was crowned as a winner in this year’s World Superyacht Awards, in the category of ‘Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts, 40m and above’.

Sanlorenzo has been building high-quality motor yachts since 1958 and has pushed its boundaries further and further since then, embracing languages and creative forms belonging to similar worlds such as design and art.

Aside from the global partnership with Art Basel, Sanlorenzo also works with world-renowned designers like Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, Laura Sessa, Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel, John Pawson and more. With its growing desirability thanks to its uniqueness and limited production numbers, Sanlorenzo is currently the leading shipyard in the 24m-plus segment in Singapore.

In early October, we witnessed the arrival of two Sanlorenzo superyachts at ONE°15 Marina – an Alloy and the iconic SL86, while another Alloy is in Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. More will follow, with an SD118, SX100 and SX76 among models scheduled for delivery to owners in Southeast Asia in the coming months.

We’re also grateful to the owners and friends who have trusted us to help them find their dream yacht or their house on the sea. Our good relationships with owners have helped us in our continued efforts to grow interest for superyachts. We have some major deals for very large yachts that have not been announced yet and we remain positive superyachts have their firmly established Southeast Asia hub here in Singapore.

One piece of advice we usually share with future Sanlorenzo owners is to take delivery of their brand new yacht at the shipyard in Italy. It’s a unique opportunity to enjoy a season of scenic yachting in the Mediterranean, cruising around the Italian coast and south of France, visiting the likes of Sardinia and Corsica.

Other destinations include Spain’s Balearic Islands to the west or the Adriatic Sea to the east, with Croatia and Montenegro. Owners can enjoy gorgeous waters and a superb yachting lifestyle.

They can also attend the Cannes, Genoa and Monaco yacht shows on the Riviera in September and stay at anchor in one of the nice bays around the area. Subsequently, their yacht could head to the shipyard for a couple of weeks of warranty works before being shipped to its destination in Asia, just in time to enjoy Christmas and Chinese New Year festivities in the likes of Phuket or Singapore.

After two years of business impasse due to the pandemic, we’re observing much more activity than ever. The typical owner’s profile has shifted towards a younger buyer, active businessmen and entrepreneurs from various industries including tech.

Another interesting trend is the surge of Chinese citizens in Singapore, a trend that will probably continue to expand due to severe Covid-related restrictions ongoing in Mainland China and partially in Hong Kong. Singapore has smartly outpaced every major city in Asia, and that open, business-minded policy has been reflected in the superyacht industry.

There has never been a better time to consider your superyacht purchase in the Lion City. At Simpson Marine and Sanlorenzo Asia, we offer experience and expertise to make these projects a rewarding reality for our yacht owners.

Belatrix wins IRC class at first Corregidor Cup

Belatrix, Wild Honey and TuTu Tango were among winners as the newly formed Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines successfully organised the first edition of the Corregidor Cup in Manila Bay.

An initiative of Albert Altura, the first Corregidor Cup was organised by the newly formed Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines in collaboration with the Corregidor Foundation and the Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina, where the three-day event was based.

The resort is situated at the southwest corner of Manila Bay, south of Corregidor Island. The regatta concept was to race around Corregidor and its associated islands, which formed part of the ‘Fortress Corregidor’ that was established in the late 19th century and early 20th century to protect Manila from seaborne attack and where two important battles took place during the Second World War.

The original classes were IRC Racing, CHS Cruising, Classic and Ocean Multihull. Unfortunately, two of the expected Classic Class boats were unable to make it, so David Wheeler’s Freewheeler – a Cape Carib 33 launched in 1977 – joined the Cruising Class. All races started at Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina, with the third race finishing at Corregidor.

The start of racing was delayed for just over an hour waiting for the Philippine Coast Guard’s approval for the regatta to take place. After a lot of phone calls and visits to the local Coast Guard office, approval was finally received, and racing went ahead.

One short race and one long race were held on the Friday. With a steady 12-15 northeast wind blowing, all classes rounded Fort Drum (El Fraile Island).

First off was the IRC Racing fleet with Belatrix, Jun Villanueva’s Ice 52, leading the way. Albert Altura’s Beneteau First 40 CR, Hurricane Hunter, got off to a bad start and had to retire from the first race due to a jammed halyard, which was fixed in time for the day’s second race.

The longer second race sent the IRC fleet around Corregidor Island and Monja Island, the westernmost island of the Corregidor Group. The wind increased to 16-18 knots, with a large squall hitting the whole fleet in the middle of the afternoon which tested the crews and equipment, but no damage was sustained.

In the evening, crews enjoyed a reggae party that had to be moved from the beach to El Patio Restaurant at the last minute due to the rain. The Caylabne did a great job in establishing a venue for the official welcome and prize ceremony. Every day a bottle of Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum, accompanying ginger beer and a cocktail shaker was awarded to each Class winner, all presented by our own ‘Sailor Jerry’ Rollin, President of the Ocean Racing Club of the Philippines.

The race on Saturday started at Caylabne Bay and finished off at Corregidor South Beach. Again with a multitude of different mark roundings, the fleet was again challenged with another squall, which this time accounted for some minor breakages.

The Ocean Multihull fleet were approaching the finish and not laying the mark when the squall hit and the big boats were lifted up to the finish led by Roman Azanza’s TuTu Tango.

Corregidor Foundation had prepared a sumptuous lunch for the crews on South Beach followed by guided tours in ‘Tranvia’ buses around the preserved memorial island with poignant remembrances of the battles fought there during World War Two.

The Rock Band, K O Jones, was ready, the stage was set and the dinner prepared, but again the weather did not play ball. The rock concert and dinner were cancelled to allow boats to return to the safety of Caylabne Bay Marina. A great disappointment made up, somewhat, by a great day of sailing.

Day three started with 12-15 knots as the classes set off around the islands. Following a last-minute request from the Cruising Class, the course was changed to go around Corregidor Island with a downwind run of six miles.

Wild Honey, James Villareal’s Beneteau Oceanis 41, led the fleet around the 23-mile course, beating Rene Ticson’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 by a mere 18 seconds on corrected time to seal the class win from the ex-Doni Altura J35 Vivaldi, with Alen Yotoko sailing her for the first time in 10 years.

On the way down the back of Corregidor Island, the Cruising fleet met the IRC fleet that was rounding the island the other way. It was a moment commented on and enjoyed by many in the Cruising fleet who rarely see the IRC boats after the start.

In the end, the IRC Racing Class featured a mixture of race winners, with Jun Villanueva’s Ice 52 Belatrix winning the class on countback after having equal points with Jun Avecilla’s Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star.

The awards lunch was held on the lawn in front of Kites and Sails, named after the kites that nest around the resort and the sails of the boats that moor there. The event sponsors were thanked and their representatives presented the trophies. More Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum went down very well with the sailors.

Katherine ‘Trin’ Custodio, Executive Director of World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines, presented prizes and was assured of the sailing community’s support for the WWF ideals.

Albert Altura, the event’s initiator, thanked Cathy Tolentino of Caylabne Bay Resort and Marina for hosting the event, Cynthia Carrion of Corregidor Foundation for hosting the fleet on the island and Jerry Rollin for pulling the whole thing together.

Jerry Rollin thanked Pen Avilla and Rye Lee Cassi and the race management team for their work and announced that the next Corregidor Cup would take place from November 16-19, 2023.
