Galeon 800 Fly

Galeon has celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022 with several new models including its long-awaited flagship 800 Fly, which had its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October. The yacht’s standout features include an enormous flybridge that widens aft and extends beyond the cockpit below, while the main deck has an aft bar, spacious saloon, forward galley and dining area.

In September, Galeon staged the world premieres of the 375 GTO and 440 Fly at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The 375 GTO builds on the 325 GTO that launched in early 2021 and spearheaded the new Grand Touring Outboard series, while the 440 Fly is the latest model to utilise the shipyard’s iconic drop-down wings made popular on its 500 Fly and rolled out on other models including the 640 Fly and 400 Fly.

CL Yachts CLB65

CL Yachts staged the world premieres of both its CLB65 and flagship CLX96 (click for Review) at Fort Lauderdale. CLB65 is the brand’s smallest model so far and its first to feature an aft galley between the cockpit and saloon.

Leopard 46 Powercat

Leopard’s new model for 2022 is the 46 Powercat (click for Review), which debuted at the Miami International Boat Show and was among the brand’s full fleet of power and sailing models at Cannes. Following the 53 launched in 2020, the 46 is the second of a new three-model powercat line-up and its features include the brand’s signature large flybridge and a door to the foredeck.

Prestige X60

Prestige’s first world premiere of the year was the X60 (click for Review), which debuted at Miami and showed at Cannes. Like the flagship X70, the X60 also has a swim platform with drop-down sofa, a clear balustrade and long covered cockpit, although unlike its widebody big sister, it does have one side deck, to port. Other new features include a sliding door on the port side of the saloon.

Prestige M48

Prestige’s M48 (click for News) was among the most anticipated premieres at Cannes, as one of the first powercats by a leading monohull builder, albeit one with Lagoon as a sister company. Designed by long-time Prestige designer Garroni Design of Italy with French naval architect Philippe Briand, the 14.8m yacht is tall and thin, with just a 6m beam, while options include a full-beam master suite forward.

Jeanneau’s DB/43 (click for News) was another exciting premiere at Cannes as the brand entered the premium dayboat market with its flagship motorboat, reuniting Garroni and American naval architect Michael Peters. Dropdown sides expand the width to 18ft 6in, the flexible aft sofa can fold down to become a sunpad, while the two cabins below include an aft master with a double and a sofa or single bed to starboard.

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 1295 Fly

Jeanneau’s Cannes premieres included the Cap Camarat 10.5 CC and Merry Fisher 1295 Fly (click for News) , which is 7ft longer than the series’ former flagship, the Merry Fisher 1095. The 1295 Fly features three 300hp Yamaha outboard engines, while eye-catching features include a drop-down platform to starboard and three integrated sun loungers on the foredeck.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

Beneteau debuted its Swift Trawler 48 (click for News) at Miami before the model was part of the builder’s Cannes line-up. The model by Andreani Design succeeds the 47 as the flagship of the Swift Trawler range of seaworthy passage makers. A MICAD-designed hull helps provide a 600nm-plus range at nine knots with twin Cummins engines, with the 425hp options giving a top speed of 25 knots.

The Antares 7 has an overall length of 7.5m (24ft 6in) and a beam of just 2.5m (8ft 4in), so is trailerable by road. The aft cockpit has seating on three sides and a boarding door to starboard, while the interior includes a dinette, adjustable helm seat, and a forward cabin. The model is also available in a Fishing version with a fishing station, a live bait well, rod holders, and storage for bait and tackle.

Poland remains Europe’s leading producer of outboard motorboats, many for international brands, yet the country is also a hotbed of innovation and ambition. This year alone, Sunreef has launched two sailing catamarans from its pioneering Eco series, Galeon has released three models ranging from a 50-knot outboard to an 83ft flagship, while Conrad launched its biggest luxury superyacht to date.

Galeon has been celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022

Marking four decades since it was founded in 1982 during Poland’s communist era, Galeon has been celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022 with a bang.

One of the world’s leading mid-range luxury yacht builders, Galeon has about 1,600 staff working in Gdansk on 30-49ft models in its inland site in Straszyn and yachts 50ft upwards at its bigger site along the Martwa Wisla river, where it has its own marina.

Galeon’s flagship 800 Fly

This year’s new models from its two facilities in and around the north-coast city have included the 375 GTO, 440 Fly and long-awaited flagship 800 Fly, which was a world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October.

The 375 GTO and 440 Fly had their global debuts at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, although seven weeks earlier the former was unveiled for its Polish premiere at the third Polboat Yachting Festival in Gdynia, a nearby sister city to Gdansk. (The fourth Polboat Yachting Festival will be held from July 27-30, 2023).

Galeon’s 375 GTO

Galeon was again the leading exhibitor at the Polboat Yachting Festival, which was held at Marina Yacht Park and organised for the third year by Polboat (Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports).

The builder displayed the 375 GTO alongside the 325 GTO, the first model of the brand’s Grand Touring Outboard series, and also showed a 400 Fly, 460 Fly and 680 Fly, a 425 HTS sport cruiser and a 510 Skydeck.

However, the 375 GTO was the star attraction, as the first example of the new GTO series growing in length. There was also extra interest because the unit on show was built for speed … serious speed.

Engine options on the 38-footer include triple 300hp or 400hp Mercury outboards, but if you really want to muscle up, you can upgrade further to twin 600hp Mercury V12 Verado outboards. This was the case on the second hull, chosen for the model’s Polish premiere.

Pawel Gorski, Galeon’s Business Development Manager, said the effect of these twin beasts was astonishing. “We almost touched 50 knots. We were basically at 49.5 knots,” he said. “It’s sharp, very stable but very fast, so you have to hold on when you’re turning at speed. It’s a really nice ride.”

BOATBUILDING FORCE
Sunreef Yachts, which employs 2,000 staff across its two shipyards in Gdansk, displayed a 60 Power catamaran at the Gdynia show, but otherwise the models were typically smaller, more in keeping with the Central European country’s status as a world leader in the production of small outboard motorboats.

The 2022 Polboat Yachting Festival featured about 100 boats

Boasting a population of 38 million, Poland has 112 yacht builders employing 48,800 staff plus 121 boat accessory and marine equipment manufacturers with a further 6,780 employees, according to figures from Polboat.

Last year, the country’s production of 24,000 boats included 22,000 outboard motorboats up to 39ft, with small sailing boats making up two-thirds of the remaining 2,000, according to Polboat figures. Most are for foreign brands and 90-95 per cent are exported, whether it’s north to Norway, west to Germany, Netherlands and France, or across the Atlantic to the USA.

Since its modern economy emerged post-communism, Poland has become home to production facilities for many leading international brands including several from yachting’s two biggest conglomerates – France’s Groupe Beneteau and USA’s Brunswick Group. In 1992, Jeanneau became one of the first foreign companies to build boats in the country.

Most yachts are built in four northern regions: Western Pomerania (Szczecin), Pomerania (Gdansk, Gdynia), Warmia-Masuria (Ostroda, Olecko, Gizycko) and Podlasie (Augustow) to the east.

Polish brands and Polish-built models dominate the Polboat Yachting Festival

An hour’s drive southeast of Gdansk, Groupe Beneteau has a huge facility in Ostroda that builds Beneteau and Jeanneau boats. In 2018, Groupe Beneteau added a second facility in Poland – and another brand – when it bought Delphia Yachts, one of the country’s biggest yacht builders and now focused on motor boats at its Olecko facility.

Brunswick brands like Sea Ray, Bayliner and Quicksilver are also built in Poland, while other foreign companies with boats built in the country include Germany’s Hanse, Denmark’s X-Yachts, Norway’s Windy and Askeladden, and Finland’s Axopar and Saxdor.

THIRD POLBOAT FESTIVAL
International brands at this year’s Polboat Yachting Festival included the likes of Nimbus, Bayliner, Saxdor and Windy, but the show is a far bigger occasion for local builders such as Parker, Northman, Balt, Cobrey and emerging companies including D-Boat, Vulcan, Nautic and VTS.

Poland, Polboat, Yachting Festival, motor, boat, yacht, sailing, Galeon, Sunreef, Galen, Parker, Francis Lapp, Cobrey, Mikolaj Krol

Polboat Yachting Festival featured fellow local builders like Balt, Northman and Parker

Parker showed four models, Cobrey showed three including its 50 Fly, Vulcan presented its JP 47, Balt debuted its flagship 37 Grand, while the Northman 1200 was among other boats in the water.

In the mid-1980s, Parker entered the leisure boat business in Poland as the distributor for Mercury Marine then started building boats in the 1990s, initially focused on RIBs. Today, the company has about 1,000 staff split between building Parker boats up to 38ft and for foreign brands including Nimbus and Windy at its Model Art boatyard.

Cobrey, founded in 2004, showed three motor yachts including its 50 Fly and 42 Fly

Meanwhile, D-Boat co-founder Szymon Zielinski was proud to announce 16 sales to date – including four to the US – of the 37-knot Diamond 550, an impressive return since exhibiting the first hull at the show’s predecessor in Gdynia in 2019.

Back then, Zielinski was a first-time boatbuilder and part-time DJ, but is now fully focused on D-Boat, proudly making the step from start-up to production builder.

The four-day show featured regular water toy demos and trials

This year’s exhibition also offered lively watersports demos and a variety of toys including SeaDoo and Kawasaki water scooters, RIBs from Sportis, Airslide hovercraft, as well as Awake jetboards and Hobie kayaks presented by Passionautica. Mercedes-Benz BMG Goworowski was among the event’s luxury partners, while Marina Yacht Park owned by PHN Group was a strategic partner.

“Poland is one of the world’s best-performing exporters of boats and yachts, so it became obvious that we should have an exhibition like the Polboat Yachting Festival,” said Michal Bak, General Secretary of Polboat, whose representatives attended this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, before hosting a booth at Metstrade in Amsterdam in November.

“The third edition was a huge success. We see a lot of improvement compared to last year and have been receiving great feedback from exhibitors and visitors. This year, we brought in more luxury brands and international exhibitors, and truly believe the 2023 show will provide an even greater experience for visitors.”

LUXURY CATS FROM SUNREEF
A Sunreef catamaran hosted the opening ceremony for the second year, with the 60 Power playing the role a year after Double Happiness, the Sunreef 80 sailing cat that was the star of the 2021 show.

The 60 Sunreef Power in front of the tented booths

Like Galeon, Sunreef has been hosting a notable anniversary this year, having been founded in the Gdansk Shipyard in 2002 by Francis Lapp (click for 20th anniversary feature). The French entrepreneur, who has also held Polish citizenship since 2014, has overseen the company’s growth to become the world’s premier builder of large luxury catamarans, highlighted by the launch of the 100 Sunreef Power in late 2021.

As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, Lapp reflected on why he chose to build in Poland, where he had already been working for a decade before building his first luxury sailing cat, the Sunreef 74 Che launched in 2003.

A 60 Sunreef Power hosts the opening ceremony led by Polboat President Sebastian Nietupski

“Poland has a lot of experience in boat building,” Lapp said. “When I started Sunreef Yachts, I was already established in Poland with my business. I knew the country’s potential and had no doubt that it was the right place to start building yachts.”

Sunreef currently employs about 2,000 staff across its Gdansk Shipyard site and its new 80,000sqm site further east along the Martwa Wisla river.

Fernando Alonso on the first Sunreef 80 Eco, which debuted in 2022

Over the summer, during a tour of the two shipyards, Sunreef was building 36 yachts simultaneously, a remarkable figure considering the best-selling models are the Sunreef 80 sailing cat and 80 Sunreef Power, while the smallest models are the Sunreef 50 and 60, and 60 Sunreef Power.

Furthermore, the complexity of models has increased with the launch of the Eco range, in which an advanced solar-panel ‘skin’ is integrated into the hull sides, superstructure, hard top roof and even the mast on sailing models.

Poland, Polboat, Yachting Festival, motor, boat, yacht, sailing, Galeon, Sunreef, Galen, Parker, Francis Lapp, Cobrey, Mikolaj Krol

The first Sunreef 60 Eco also launched in 2022

Other green tech on Eco models can include hydrogeneration, wind turbines, ultra-light lithium batteries, and sustainable materials used in the finish and décor or even superstructure. This year, Sunreef has launched the first 80 Eco and 60 Eco sailing models, as the builder works hard to keep up with demand.

“The Gdansk Shipyard has a great reputation and has access to many skilled workers, although finding enough workforce for both sites has been a challenge recently,” Lapp said. “That’s why we employ many workers from abroad and are on a constant search for more staff.”

SUPERYACHTS CONRAD
Conrad Shipyard, named after Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad, was founded in Gdansk in 2003, a year after Sunreef. The brand was created as a luxury-yacht arm of the Marine Projects shipyard established in 1989 and today the companies have about 400 staff between them.

The 40m Viatoris, the first C133 by Conrad

Mikolaj Krol, son-in-law of the shipyard’s owner, is CEO of Conrad and has overseen the company’s up and downs for almost 20 years.

“I was green when I started, but my father-in-law had faith in me running the company. If I had known at that time how hard the work would be, I would never have done it,” laughed Krol, who was initially an architect. “Anyway, after many years of superhuman effort by everyone, I’m proud of where we are. We’ve outlasted some competitors elsewhere in Europe.”

There’s good reason for his optimism. Conrad’s business started with the 27m Bill Dixon-designed Escape S (now Chillin) launched in 2005 and has included a hugely diverse range of custom motor and sailing yachts, refits and short-lived series.

Poland, Polboat, Yachting Festival, motor, boat, yacht, sailing, Galeon, Sunreef, Galen, Parker, Francis Lapp, Cobrey, Mikolaj Krol

Interior of Viatoris

The early years also included two stylish 15m tugboats developed with Polish designer Juliusz Strawinski, the jet-powered Capo series of aluminium motorboats, and the 55-knot SUC Docksta line of luxuriously finished patrol-boat-style vessels built for Middle East clients.

Later models included Lunar (2013), the 35m aluminium ketch motorsailer, and Bellkara (2016), a 28m aluminium sloop, while in 2014 the yard completed a refit of the classic 46m steel schooner Malcolm Miller launched in 1968.

However, it was the 40m Viatoris for a repeat client that put Conrad on the luxury superyacht map, especially following its world premiere at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show.

The 44m Ace is the first C144S by Conrad

Featuring an exterior by UK-based firm Reymond Langton and naval architecture by Dutch studio Diana Yacht Design, the C133 model won multiple awards and inspired the upcoming C144S that has received not one but two orders.

Like the 393GT Viatoris, the C144S is designed by Reymond Langton and Diana Yacht Design but is bigger in every way, with an overall length of 44m, a beam of 8.9m and a volume of 494GT. The S is for ‘straight bow’, with the plumb bow adding extra volume for a yacht with an owner’s suite, four VIP guest cabins, four double cabins for crew and a captain’s cabin on the bridge.

Notably, the C144S is the first Conrad yacht to not feature interior design by Krol himself, with Italy’s m2atelier taking on the role. The first hull, Ace, launched in October (click for article) and was handed over to its Swiss owner in December, while the second hull sold to a French client is scheduled to launch in 2023.

Poland, Polboat, Yachting Festival, motor, boat, yacht, sailing, Galeon, Sunreef, Galen, Parker, Francis Lapp, Cobrey, Mikolaj Krol

Ace in Gdansk, home to Poland’s leading luxury yacht builders

“The C144S is like a big sister of the C133,” Krol said. “The first hull is for someone who liked Viatoris, but wanted a more modern silhouette, a plumb bow and more volume for crew. Both have timeless designs and I think both Viatoris and the C144S will still look great in years to come.”

After years of one-off superyachts, Conrad will mark its 20th anniversary in 2023 with ongoing production of their biggest model to date while promoting the C133, C133S, C144S, C155 and other designs on the board.

“We’re now in a position to start building customised superyachts on a more regular production scale,” said Krol. “However, there’s a special spirit at Conrad because we’re not too big and every client can still discuss everything with me directly. I’m personally connected with each yacht – they’re like my babies.”

The French builder has launched the Antares 7, the second-smallest model in its series of enclosed outboard motorboats.

Beneteau’s new models for 2022 include the Antares 7 enclosed motorboat, which is available in Cruising and Fishing versions.

The second-smallest model in the Antares range, the Antares 7 has an overall length of 7.48m (24ft 6in), a hull of 6.48m (21ft 3in) and a beam of 2.53m (8ft 4in), so is trailerable by road.

With a 200hp engine, the Sarrazin-designed Antares 7 can reach 33 knots, but its hull has been optimised for cruising at 21 knots, while a bow thruster is an option.

Following some of the design advancements shown on the Antares 8, the Antares 7 features include a side boarding door, large starboard walkway, integrated rack in the hard top, versatile berths, storage and an optional separate head.

The aft cockpit features three-sided seating including a fold-down port bench in the freeboard and an aft bench that can contain a cooler, with the seating area able to be converted into a sunbathing area. The foredeck includes a sunpad and an anchor locker.

The interior includes a dinette with a table that can be lowered to create a berth, while to starboard is a galley with hob, sink and fridge.

Forward is the helm seat, which can rotate to face the dinette, while the backrest on the forward bench seat to port can be reversed to transform it into companion seating while under way.

The forward cabin has a standard double berth and a storage space to starboard, fitted with a chemical toilet. The optional Weekender lower-deck layout has a separate head that includes a sink.

The Fishing version replaces the aft bench with a fishing station including rod holders, drink holders, cutting board and storage for bait and tackle, while a live bait well is on the port side.

The wheelhouse roof can be equipped with five additional rod holders, as well as a spotlight and an additional nine-inch display connected to the depth sounder.

A total of 14 yachts competed in the one-day event, which was split into two legs. Leg One consisted of separate routes from Sai Kung, Victoria Harbour and Aberdeen to Shek O Rock, where all yachts assembled for Leg Two.

Headed by founder Edwin Ho, Starship has expanded its portfolio following its appointment to represent Wider’s new power catamarans in two major Asian markets.

Starship Yachts has been appointed as exclusive dealer for WiderCat power catamarans in Hong Kong and Singapore. Founded in Hong Kong in 1994 by Edwin Ho, Starship Yachts is a long-time dealer in Hong Kong and Macau for multiple Italian motor yacht builders as well as French RIB brand Zodiac, with the addition of Wider expanding its portfolio and extending its presence into Singapore.

The WiderCat 92 is a popular new model being built by Italy’s Wider, which recently appointed MarineMax to represent the 92ft powercat in the US, home to two of the first five orders, set for delivery in 2023 and 2024. Wider is producing the WiderCat 92 at its expanding facility in Fano, while building the 72m megayacht Moonflower at its new superyacht hub in Venice.

The drop-down sides offer access to two VIP suites

Among exciting new catamaran designs highlighted in YACHT STYLE Issue 65 (the 2022 ‘Multihull Issue’), the WiderCat 92 is designed with Luca Dini and features large interior volumes due to a 39ft-plus beam. The beam extends when the side platforms drop, offering direct access to both VIP cabins and linking with the fold-down garage door to form a 720sqft, three-sided beach club.

The WiderCat 92 features 1,830sqft of solar panels, so is energy self-sufficient when anchored at sea, with unused energy stored in the lithium batteries to power systems at night. Wider’s serial hybrid system enables a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range over 1,600nm at eight knots or up to 2,400nm at six knots. In zero-emission mode, the yacht can travel 27nm at six knots in silence.

“This a new chapter for Starship Yachts,” said Edwin Ho, founder and President of Starship, who has been joined in the team by his son Jamie. “We are embarking on a new vision of yachting hand in hand with Wider’s sun-powered, boundary-breaking, 28m power catamaran, inspired by the sun and made for planet earth.”

Wider is a leading proponent of hybrid propulsion systems and solar technology, building upon the shipyard’s extensive implementation on its superyachts since the company was founded in 2010.

The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica: A Perfect Pairing of Whisky and Coffee

The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica: A Perfect Pairing of Whisky and Coffee

SHARE

This second collection explores the links between two of the world’s most famous drinks: whisky and coffee.

By Joseph Low

There are many similarities between whisky and coffee. Of the many congruities, the most poignant affinity would probably be the robust culture that has accompanied the drinks for over 1,000 years. The act of consuming these reinvigorating drinks itself could be treated as a ritual of sorts where an elaborate process is observed. In appreciation of tradition and craftsmanship, The Macallan has released the second edition of The Harmony Collection: Inspired by Intense Arabica. This new release celebrates the coming together of coffee and whisky while also appreciating the tradition and dedication in the making process of coffee and whisky.

The new collection is “inspired by the Ethiopian Arabica coffee bean”. For many coffee connoisseurs, Ethiopia is known as the cradle of coffee and the beverage is more than just a quick perk-me-up. “Buna tetu”, which translates to “come to drink coffee” in the local language, is a famous communal tradition in Ethiopia and a binding thread of the society. This draws parallels to how whisky is consumed in the western world and the significance it holds. For Scottish Highlanders, whisky represents traditional values of “egalitarianism, generosity and virility” and to refuse a dram would be akin to rejecting these values.

With such concepts in mind, The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner attempts to unite these seemingly disparate drinks through The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica. Exploring the “incredible journey from bean to cup, uncovering the unique process and distinct flavour profiles at each stage”, Bremner consulted several coffee masters for this new release.

Bremner meticulously picked a combination of sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks to achieve the distinctive notes of this new whisky. The former helps to add sweeter and softer vanilla notes, while the latter “offers the rich and satisfying elements of coffee”. When looking at the whisky, the crema-coloured liquid resembles an espresso that has been added with water. On the nose, aromatic coffee scents from tiramisu and cappuccino take over before giving way to raisins, almonds, sweet oak and vanilla. Upon sipping the whisky, the coffee taste is more pronounced and akin to savouring a cup of espresso. Slowly, the layered flavours peel off to reveal hints of dark chocolate, blackberry and Brazil nut. After letting the whisky thoroughly coat the palate, its finish is long, balanced with a touch of sweetness and dark roast coffee.

Sharing more about the creative process behind The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica, Bremner said, “Exploring the world of coffee with our masters in the industry, who shared their knowledge, creativity, and love for their art, was both an education and an inspiration. There are many parallels between the approach to creating incomparable whisky and coffee. Each requires unique skills and craftsmanship to achieve depth and complexity of taste and both worlds aim to deliver an extraordinary consumption experience.”

To fully enjoy the experience, Bremner recommends tasting the whisky with a cup of coffee so that the unique tasting notes of the whisky are accentuated. Furthermore, this provides a one-of-a-kind sensory experience to enjoy the best of both whisky and coffee.

In continuation of the brand’s commitment towards sustainability since the first edition of The Harmony Collection, Rich Cacao, where unwanted cacao husks were incorporated into the packaging, Inspired by Intense Arabica also utilises repurposed and recycled materials such as coffee bean husks. References to coffee fruits could be seen through the rich red Pantone colour in the design of its presentation box.

To celebrate the launch of the Inspired by Intense Arabica launch, The Macallan will welcome whisky and coffee lovers to its boutique at Raffles Hotel Singapore between 9 and 18 December 2022. During this pop-up, guests not only relish the drinks but will also learn more about The Macallan’s sustainability initiatives through journeying along its zero-waste production process. “For both whisky and coffee aficionados alike, the experience is an innovative blend of the best of both worlds, recognising the craftsmanship and detail that goes towards producing artisan coffee, as well as a rich glass of whisky.”

Azimut-Benetti Group has topped the Global Order Book for 24m-plus superyachts for the 23rd straight year. The Italian company is the leader among 189 shipyards, both in number of projects under construction (168, up from 128) and total length (5,991m) of its projects.

Founded by Paolo Vitelli and led by his daughter Giovanna, Azimut-Benetti’s Vice President, the family-owned company recorded a production value of more than €1.2 billion for the year and extended its order book into 2027.

Over the next three years, Azimut-Benetti plans to invest €130 million in R&D in the development of new products, cutting-edge technologies and sustainability, with a growing focus on reducing fuel consumption and emissions by combining innovative propulsion systems including hybrid and electric, increasingly efficient hulls and extensive use of carbon-fibre to reduce weight.

Italy’s Sanlorenzo remains in second place, increasing its projects from 117 to 128 with a total length of 4,577m. Italy’s Ferretti Group continues to not be included in the list, which is why only 19 of the ‘top 20’ are shown in the table.

Taiwan’s Ocean Alexander remains third after increasing its superyachts projects from 47 to 73 with a total length of 2,382m, while fellow Kaohsiung builder Horizon is in 11th place.

Dutch megayacht builder Feadship is in fourth place, ahead of British builders Princess and Sunseeker. Germany’s Lurssen is seventh, ahead of The Italian Sea Group, whose brands include Admiral, Tecnomar and Perini Navi. Damen Yachting of the Netherlands and Italy’s Overmarine Group round out the top 10.

Mohammed Alshaali reflects on Gulf Craft’s four decades, growing from an isolated fishing boat start-up to a high-tech, fully integrated operation building yachts from 34-175ft across four brands, with two upcoming Majesty superyachts set to kickstart the company’s fifth decade. Alshaali was named Middle East Entrepreneur 2022 at the NORNS Awards for his contribution to the Middle East’s leisure maritime industry

Congratulations on 40 years since you co-founded Gulf Craft in 1982. What were the key moves that helped Gulf Craft grow to become the Middle East’s leading yacht and superyacht builder?
The first big jump was in 1991, when we moved from building boats to building the first yacht, a 53 flybridge. The second jump in the history of the company was in 2001 when we began building superyachts, starting with the Millennium 118 for John Staluppi in Florida and the Majesty Yachts brand.

Since then, we’ve tried to balance between building boats, small cruisers, yachts and superyachts. Of course, the superyachts grew bigger over time, but we’re still building fishing boats and cruisers, as well as water taxis in our factories in the Maldives. Our aim is to be among the world’s top five superyacht builders in terms of styling, quality, engineering and interiors.

Gulf Craft was founded in 1982

Are you happy with where Majesty Yachts is today?
I’m very happy because we perfected the interior and exterior styling some time ago. For the last two years, we’ve been focusing more on engineering, on how to make the boat even more comfortable and reliable. We use the latest technology and are always trying to improve.

Now we have, for example, boats using solar panels, battery power, and so on. On our new Nomad 70 SUV, all the hotel loads can be run from the batteries, and you only need the engines for propulsion.

We’re trying to introduce new technologies and keep up with the new tech, such as navigation equipment, entertainment systems and everything else on the boat. We’re also trying to use nature-friendly materials on our boats and yachts. This is all part of the work of our R&D department, which includes 50 engineers.

That’s why I say we want to be top five. It doesn’t mean we will be there tomorrow or next year, but this is our target.

Mohammed Alshaali with YACHT STYLE CEO Gael Burlot

In Europe, many leading yacht builders are competing with and learning from neighbouring or nearby yards, but Gulf Craft is all alone in the UAE. How can you keep up?
We have consultants from Europe and are in constant communication with high-tech developers. We invest money in this. We’re physically a little far from the centre of the yachting industry, but we started far away 40 years ago, and we weren’t scared to compete.

However, if you talked to me over 20 years ago and said we’d be regular exhibitors at the Monaco Yacht Show, I wouldn’t have believed you. But things are changing. Yes, Europe used to feel further away, but we’re living in a global economy. We’re inter-dependent.

Alshaali jokes with Cristiano Gatto on the Majesty 120

Gulf Craft is making a concerted effort to open new markets, such as making your US show debut at Fort Lauderdale in late 2019 with the Majesty 140 and Majesty 100. Where do you see your biggest growth regions in the coming years?
Growing around the world has always been a priority and I think we’ve succeeded. If you can compete in Europe, you can compete anywhere, because even in the US, we’re competing with European brands. In Asia, Australia, we’re competing with European brands. We’re selling well in Europe, so if we’re selling there, we can sell anywhere else.

Abeer Alshaali is Deputy Managing Director of Gulf Craft

Your daughter Abeer is Deputy Managing Director, overseeing the company’s global expansion. How closely do you work with her?
We work together as we’re both part of the Management Board. It’s not me or her making the decisions but the whole board. The financial department, engineering department, all the different departments are represented on the board. My daughter and my three sons – two also work for the company – all grew up as Gulf Craft was growing, so boating is in their blood.

The Gulf Craft Experience Centre in Dubai’s Port Rashid

What has been the response to the Gulf Craft Experience Centre at Port Rashid in Dubai since it opened at the beginning of the year?
It has been well received and worked well for us. It’s close to the centre of Dubai and close to the airport. It also allowed us to separate the sales and marketing department from the factory, so they have their own space and can receive clients and prospects in their own facility. It’s much easier for everyone.

The Majesty 120 was at Cannes and Monaco

What was the feedback on the Majesty 120 as it made its European debut in September, showing at both the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, along with a Majesty 100?
There was a very good response, and this will show in the order book. This year was the first time the 120 came to Europe but we already have hull five in production. This shows that the 120 already had a good reputation with people that saw her in the past, including at the Dubai International Boat Show earlier in the year. Hull two Rocket One, the 120 shown in Europe, went to America to exhibit at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and we have another sale in the US.

The Majesty 100 remains our most popular superyacht. We’ve delivered 12 and have another five or six in production.

Cristiano Gatto announces the Majesty 160

You work regularly with Cristiano Gatto, who designed the exterior and interior of the Majesty 175 and the interior of the Majesty 120, plus he has designed the upcoming Majesty 160. Why does this partnership work for Gulf Craft?
It’s very important when you work with a designer that he understands production. We’re not one-off builders. He doesn’t design one boat for one customer. He designs a series for a yard, so he knows that we’ll be building multiple hulls of each model.

Also, you need to have trust. He trusts what we’ll do, and we trust him. We’ve also developed a friendship since we met. We’re constantly challenging each other on designs, discussing solutions, but he knows he’ll never be undercut or sabotaged because we trust each other.

The Majesty 160 will be Gulf Craft’s second-biggest build

Cristiano Gatto is one of the best designers in the market for bigger yachts and he has designed so many of them. And the Majesty 175 is unique. She’s the most beautiful yacht and I don’t say that because we built it – we’ve built so many – but this is how I feel every time I go on that yacht. The only down side is that not a lot of people saw the yacht in person because she wasn’t at any boat shows.

We’ve been working with Cristiano again on the new Majesty 160, which also marks our first project with Van Oossanen, on the naval architecture.

The Majesty 111 will debut at the 2023 Dubai show

What’s the update on the upcoming Majesty 111, which will fit between the 100 and 120 models in the range?
We’re building two hulls simultaneously and the first one will be at the Dubai International Boat Show in March 2023. The Majesty 111 has been designed by Dutch studio Phathom and we’ve sold hull one, with others in negotiation.

The Majesty 72 debuted at Abu Dhabi in November

How important to the brand are the smaller Majesty models like the 49, 62, 62 M and the new 72? They’re a huge gulf in price from the Superyacht Collection, so who do they appeal to?
I always say we’re a small company. We grew up with our customers. We started in yachts with 50-footers, 60-footers, and the demands from customers kept growing, so we built bigger yachts and superyachts. Yet, we still have new customers coming to us, so we keep the smaller models, which are the bread and butter of the company.

The Nomad 70 SUV debuted at this year’s Dubai show

What distinguishes the Nomad series, which features 55, 65 and 75 Fly models, and 65, 70, 75 and 95 SUV versions?
Nomad is different. The Nomad is not a smaller Majesty superyacht; it’s a relaxing, slower, oceangoing experience, made for people who don’t worry about reaching somewhere quickly or showing off. They want something to live in as a family and enjoy the sea. Considering we only launched the brand in 2015, they’re selling very well and we’re adding new models every couple of years.

The SUV versions have worked well. We launched the Nomad 70 SUV at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show and already have three or four on order.

The Oryx 379 from the brand’s range of sport cruisers

Which models represent the future of the Oryx sport cruiser range (36, 379 and 42)?
We already had the 36 and 42, then we changed the style a bit and released the 379 and now we’re building a 47ft and a smaller one. They’ve been selling well and the price in the market for resale is excellent. We have 70 or 80 Oryx boats on the water, mostly in the Middle East, and we’re also selling a few of the 379 in the likes of the Med and Australia.

Silvercraft is a mix of power catamarans (SilverCat 34 CC/HT/Lux, SilverCat 40 CC/Lux) and monohulls (36 CC/HT, 47). What are the main markets for these models?
Silvercraft is more focused on fishing and utility boats, and this is where Gulf Craft started. We don’t want to lose our heritage, so we still cater to those customers. However, the catamaran models are new to Silvercraft because it’s a popular hull for sport fishing, although these models have more luxury than most fishing boats. They have air-conditioning, a proper saloon, galley, a nice bathroom and so on.

The Silvercraft 40 Lux continues Gulf Craft’s history of powercats

We have a history in catamarans. We built racing powercats in the late 1980s and built our catamaran yachts in the early and mid-1990s, although there wasn’t a big market for it as the materials were expensive.

Now the mentality towards catamarans has changed, and the materials are better, and that’s why you see a lot of people coming back to catamarans because of stability, fuel efficiency and space. We’re not only following the market; we have a background in this. We will have a factory dedicated to catamarans that will open next year.

Alshaali plays host on the Majesty 120

How do you feel when you look back at 40 years of Gulf Craft, having also had such a successful personal career?
I’m proud of what has been done. It’s not for me or my family; it’s for the team at Gulf Craft and for the country. I think we’ve shown we can create a world-class yacht builder. I think it’s a legacy for the UAE and I think Gulf Craft is part of the UAE story. In fact, I don’t think there’s anything else like Gulf Craft in the whole Middle East, a local company that manufactures a high-standard product exported around the world.
