Goolets, a leading global charter company, has been appointed as the Central Agent for DS Yachts (Dalmatico Super Yachts), which offers an 11-strong fleet of accordable, eco-friendly superyachts for charter in Croatia. The yachts range from 28-52m and offer between four to 19 cabins for up to 39 guests.

“These groundbreaking ‘smart vessels’ revolutionise sustainability in charter superyachts with unmatched fuel efficiency, offering an eco-conscious luxury travel experience,” Goolets stated.

The fleet is headed by the 48m Freedom, which was refurbished to provide 11 cabins – including two huge master suites – instead of 18 and was profiled in Charter in YACHT STYLE Issue 66 (click for article).

Freedom is the most expensive yacht in the fleet, chartering from €100,000 per week (inclusive of food and fuel) and accommodating over 20 guests. Traditional superyachts in Europe that accommodate up to 12 guests typically start from about €250,000 per week.

The 49m Ohana (14 cabins) and 52m Bellezza (18 cabins) both charter from €90,000, while the 49m Queen Eleganza (17 cabins), 47m Bella and 48m Riva (both 18 cabins) start from €85,000, €90,000 and €60,000 respectively.

The 48m Cristal (19 cabins) and 52m Alfa Mario (18 cabins) both charter from €90,000, while the 48m Karizma (18 cabins) starts from €60,000. The 28m motorsailer Santa Clara (four cabins) starts from €36,000, while another motorsailer, the 37m Maxita, will be ready in 2024 and charter from €61,000.

As well as huge guest capacity and low charter prices, the DS Yachts fleet is also notable for its low fuel consumption, with Goolets saying the models consume up to 70 per cent less than comparably-sized yachts. For example, Freedom consumes an average of 100 litres per hour when cruising at 8.6 knots.

Offering an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the Adriatic Sea in an environmentally friendly manner, the DS Yachts fleet managed by Goolets offers a more affordable option for larger groups along with a luxurious onboard experience, privacy, exclusivity and five-star service.

Mitja Mirtic, CEO and founder of Goolets, said: “We’re thrilled to offer our clients a new fleet of superyachts that redefine luxury yachting with their exceptional fuel efficiency.

“We firmly believe luxury should not come at the expense of our planet, so we’re committed to providing our clients with an environmentally conscious alternative that is both affordable and luxurious.”

Founded in 2005, Goolets is one of the leading luxury charter companies in Croatia and also operates in Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, Indonesia and the Caribbean.

Recognised by esteemed media outlets such as CNN, Forbes, Boat International and Yacht Style, Goolets consistently receives overwhelmingly positive reviews from satisfied clients who appreciate the exceptional service and unforgettable memories created during their charters.

Beneteau will premiere its Oceanis 37.1 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17 before the new sailing yacht shows at Grand Pavois La Rochelle from September 20-25.

The model then makes its country debuts in Italy at the Genoa International Boat Show (September 21-26), Spain at the Barcelona International Boat Show (October 11-15) and US at the Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 12-15).

Beneteau, Oceanis, 37.1, 38.1, Marc Lombard, Nauta Design, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Genoa International Boat Show, Barcelona International Boat Show, Annapolis Sailboat Show

Featuring naval architecture by Marc Lombard, and deck and interior design by Italy’s Nauta Design, the Oceanis 37.1 has an overall length of 11.9m (39ft 2in) based on an 11m (36ft 1in) hull with a beam of  3.9m (12ft 10in). Part of the seventh generation of Oceanis cruisers, the 37.1 joins a six-strong series also featuring the 30.1, 34.1, 40.1, 46.1 and 51.1.

A renewal of the 38.1, which was produced for nine years, the Oceanis 37.1 was designed to offer greater volume and improved performance, while retaining the ease of use that has been a hallmark of Oceanis cruisers since they were first launched in 1986.

Beneteau, Oceanis, 37.1, 38.1, Marc Lombard, Nauta Design, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Genoa International Boat Show, Barcelona International Boat Show, Annapolis Sailboat Show

The outdoor space is very open, with no backstay, a layout used on the Oceanis 30.1 and 34.1. The rig is tall (in-mast furling system is optional) and promises excellent performance. In the standard version with a self-tacking jib, focus has been put on making things easier, while the lively First Line version has a square-top mainsail and furling genoa for 22 per cent additional sail area.

To retain easy handling shorthanded, all the rigging is brought back to the two aft winches. Only the halyards remain grouped around the coachroof. All the instruments, including a seven-inch plotter, are at the starboard helm console.

Beneteau, Oceanis, 37.1, 38.1, Marc Lombard, Nauta Design, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Genoa International Boat Show, Barcelona International Boat Show, Annapolis Sailboat Show

The open cockpit is over 3m long and has central table. Once the helm seats have been lifted, the wide walkway opens onto a lowered bathing platform.

Iroko, an alternative to teak, is used for the cockpit decking using a new assembly process called Iro-Deck. Each strip of plywood decking is made up of several laminated layers, which ensure a uniform colour, excellent sustainability and rule out the risk of cracks, which are frequent on solid wood decks

.

Beneteau, Oceanis, 37.1, 38.1, Marc Lombard, Nauta Design, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Genoa International Boat Show, Barcelona International Boat Show, Annapolis Sailboat Show

The hull is flared with a rib, which maintains fluid lines below water and achieves greater power and stability. It also improves the hull rigidity, controlling the weight well, and providing greater volume inside the bow.

Beneteau says the space in the saloon is nearly as large as on a 40-footer. The lounge is to port and has plenty of room with a C-shaped sofa and a comfortable table for six. The long galley is to starboard, forward of the common bathroom.

Beneteau, Oceanis, 37.1, 38.1, Marc Lombard, Nauta Design, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Genoa International Boat Show, Barcelona International Boat Show, Annapolis Sailboat Show

The layout includes a forward owner’s cabin, with or without en-suite bathroom, while aft are either two identical double guest cabins or one king-size double to port and a vast sail locker to starboard.

The Oceanis 37.1 is available with an electric motor with a 12kW pod and 10kWh batteries, enough for a cruising range of two hours at five knots between two charges, all emission-free and in eco-friendly silence.

Sol, an 80 Sunreef Power Eco

Sunreef Yachts is in the process of delivering a stunning, gold-hulled 80 Sunreef Power Eco to US-based owners with a strong passion for sustainability. Named Sol, the striking solar-electric luxury catamaran is the first publicised version of a Power model from Sunreef’s Eco Line and has been described as the “world’s most advanced electric motor yacht” by the Polish builder.

The builder’s first Eco sailing catamaran, a Sunreef 80 Eco, was launched early last year. Distinguished by her dark-blue hull, Marie-Joseph went on to exhibit at the Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show last September, as well as this year’s Dubai International Boat Show in the UAE, where Sunreef is developing a new production facility.

Soon, there was more to come from the Eco line. Marie-Joseph was followed last year by a Sunreef 60 Eco sail cat and this year by the second Sunreef 80 Eco. It was then the turn of Sol, which was named in honour of the Norse sun goddess and launched in May at the builder’s second, larger production facility in the north-coast city of Gdansk.

Sol, also Spanish for sun, is an Eco version of the hugely popular 80 Sunreef Power, whose many owners include tennis star Rafa Nadal. Officially unveiled at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival, the 80 Power has already sold about 30 units between its standard and Eco versions, a staggering total considering the size of the 24m catamaran with a 12m beam.

Sol has two 360kW electric engines and 990kWh of batteries

However, eco-friendly propulsion and energy systems were priorities for Sol’s owners, a family of experienced boat owners “deeply engaged in sustainability and looking for the perfect eco-responsible motor yacht”, according to Sunreef.

Sol features Sunreef’s revolutionary solar-power system, with panels fully integrated into the hull sides and superstructure, and has two 360kW engines and 990kWh of batteries. The yacht also features an energy-saving air-conditioning system and smart energy management, while the tailored layout and décor includes four en-suite cabins to accommodate eight guests.

CHOOSING SUNREEF

The yacht’s owners have a long history in yachting. Spending time on the water since childhood, they’ve raced sailboats and cruised extensively in New England, Florida and the Bahamas with family boats, also chartering in the British Virgin Islands.

“Our three generations of close-knit families have enjoyed countless joyful experiences on board our family yachts, but the climate impact of large power yachts is significant,” the owners said.

“We’ve taken extensive steps to impact the climate crises, so we could only consider a motor yacht if it incorporated technologies that are rapidly scaling in other sectors such as solar energy and electric vehicles. Given our focus on sustainability broadly, only an electric ‘Eco’ boat aligned with our values.”

Having researched the market with The Catamaran Company and visited overseas shipyards “to determine who was genuinely and successfully advancing state-of-the-art with electric and sustainable yachting”, the owners decided to build with Sunreef Yachts.

Forward view of the vast saloon, which the owners will outfit with additional furniture after the yacht arrives in the US

“The result of our discovery process was clear,” the owners said. “Sunreef leads the industry with research and development, high-quality production, highly evaluated sourcing, and compelling on-water performance.”

BUILDING THE DREAM

The couple, their captain, designer and broker all worked directly with Sunreef throughout the project, interfacing remotely with the shipyard’s client-facing team, sometimes on a weekly basis.

“Sunreef allowed for significant input and choice on our part. While we’ve never designed and built a yacht, we’ve brought our style and ideas from our home and hospitality projects, and enjoyed learning and shaping our future marine home,” the owners said.

“On-site visits were extremely efficient in terms of making early design decisions about layout, material, colours and furnishings. Sunreef is a family-run, private company with a history of high achievement, and that culture is evident throughout the organisation.”

At time of writing, there was still work to be completed, with the owners planning to have the teak decking and most of the furniture installed in the US. Once it’s all done, the owners plan to spend summers on the yacht in the Northeast and winters in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, when the boat is not being chartered.

The French builder will debut the Merry Fisher 895 Serie2 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival from September 12-17.

Jeanneau is set to show its new Merry Fisher 895 Serie2 at a series of shows, with its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival (September 12-17) on France’s south coast followed by a west-coast appearance at Grand Pavois La Rochelle (September 20-25).

The third-biggest Merry Fisher model behind the 1095 (available with Fly) and 1295 Fly, the 895 Serie2 will then be shown in Spain at the Barcelona International Boat Show (October 11-15) before making its US debut early next year at the Miami International Boat Show (February 14-18, 2024).

The Serie2 model is the new edition of the best-selling Merry Fisher 895, but is a ‘third generation’ 8m model to offer two separate cabins. The Merry Fisher 855 was launched in 2012 and was the first 8m hull to offer two separate cabins, according to Jeanneau, and was succeeded by the hugely popular 895, with 1,800 units produced since the model’s launch in 2017.

Again designed by Jeanneau with Centkowski & Denert, the 895 Serie2 has an overall length of 8.42m (27ft 7in) based on a 7.98m (26ft 2in) hull with a beam of 3m (9ft 10in), plus a shallow draft of just 0.68m (2ft 3in).

Developed by tank testing, the new hull form enables faster planing and flat cruising, starting at intermediate speeds. Offered with twin engines up to 250hp each, the 895 Serie2 has a joystick to simplify docking manoeuvres.

Features include a starboard bulwark side door for access from a quay or a dock. The aft cockpit includes J-shaped seating including a folding port bench seat, while the central table can be covered to create a large sunbathing area. A refrigerator is among options.

Jeanneau, Merry Fisher, 895, Serie2, 1095, 1295, Centkowski & Denert, Cannes Yachting Festival, Grand Pavois La Rochelle, Barcelona International Boat Show, Miami International Boat Show

Notable upgrades from the original Merry Fisher 895 include an integrated triple sunpad on the foredeck, with the head of the central pad able to fold forward and offer drinks holders, complementing those on both sides of the sunpad. The triple sunpad can even be extended to reach the forepeak.

Jeanneau describes the interior atmosphere as “soft, harmonious and refined”, notable for grey walnut woodwork, Corian countertops in the galley, and contemporary upholstery.

The port side features a sliding window, a foldable table and facing bench seats either side, with a flexible backrest allowing the forward sofa to become companion seating. The table can be lowered and covered to create a double berth. To starboard is a practical galley featuring lots of storage and a helm station with a rotating pilot seat and sliding door to the side deck.

Central stairs lead down to the shared bathroom to starboard, master cabin in the bow and a double cabin midships.

Fabian Bez, CEO, Torqeedo

Fabian, having studied mechanical engineering in Munich, what led to your career in high-tech mobility and eventually to Torqeedo?

Funnily enough, I grew up on Lake Starnberg, Torqeedo’s home lake outside Munich. As a kid, I was always on the water, rowing and sailing as often as I could, so I was a first-hand witness to the development of this hotbed of electric boating and the growth of Torqeedo as a company.

Like many young people, I was fascinated with how things work, especially cars. I was always taking things apart and putting them back together. While it was clear engineering might be my future career, I was also really fascinated by how ‘making things’ works as a business.

I was a serial entrepreneur throughout my studies, and further pursued a degree in engineering economics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2003-07). This turned out to be a key combination: to be an engineer and understand the technology behind highly technical products, while also leveraging that knowledge to run a strong, healthy business.

Later experiences in the automotive industry and building up Webasto’s battery-systems and charging-solutions business units also informed my development as a leader in innovative drivetrain development, and electrification and alternative-fuels strategy.

All the professional experience, consulting jobs and education prepared me for leading Torqeedo, but the heart of it is that I love being on the water. That strong connection to nature and the waters I grew up on was, and is, important. I want everyone to experience that connection.

When you started as CEO of Torqeedo last October, what were your brief and key targets for the coming years?

Any new CEO job comes with financial and performance targets, as did this one, but my key targets are differently defined. Personally, I want to feel connected to where I’m investing my time and energy. I need to believe in what I’m doing, to be a part of something worth being proud of. I think most people need that.

My first priority is to build a company that acts with respect for its employees, its customers, its partners and the planet. A place where everyone is excited, engaged and happy to contribute. If you manage this, you’re well on your way to meeting the financial and performance goals.

At the same time, I’m drawn to companies where there are challenges. There’s huge potential in the electrification of the marine industry and the Torqeedo brand is strong and well respected. Customer interest is skyrocketing, and the eyes of the industry are on this company as we build the future of marine mobility.

Essentially, Torqeedo created and is now riding a massive sea change and my job is to make sure we keep our heads above water. These are “good problems to have”.

Over the last year, we’ve invested in our manufacturing infrastructure and optimised our R&D processes. Our new structure of two business groups will ensure we have the proper products and services to continue to connect with today’s and tomorrow’s boaters.

It’s my task, together with our leadership team, to leverage our assets – a proven product portfolio, partnerships, almost two decades of experience, and technical excellence – to become a true series manufacturer of complete, customisable systems and services that will continue to lead boating into its emission-free future.

How is the company structured in terms of headquarters and regional offices?

Torqeedo recently moved into our new headquarters in the Weßling municipality west of Munich, consolidated three manufacturing locations into that new headquarters, and invested in improving our production capabilities and internal processes. We’ve implemented lean manufacturing strategies and are ready to meet the growing demand for sustainable boating solutions.

As well as maintaining two regional headquarters in the USA and Thailand, Torqeedo has a worldwide sales and service network with partners in more than 100 countries. From our Asia-Pacific headquarters in Bangkok, we see strong growth markets for electrification, especially in luxury yachting, in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the UAE.

Torqeedo produced its 200,000th motor earlier this year, in the same week the company celebrated its 18th anniversary. The company founders were confident demand for electric boat propulsion would increase due to growth of population and middle classes, limited oil reserves and efforts to limit global warming. Are these reasons still as relevant today?

The key drivers for electric mobility on land and water are the same as they were when Torqeedo was created. Electric boating is clean, quiet and easy to use – for many people, it’s just a nicer way to boat.

Electric boating enables closer connections between boaters and nature, and boaters and their friends and families. Concurrently, we’re failing to adequately address our warming climate. Our cities continue to suffer from air and water pollution while becoming increasingly crowded.

Electrification is the most basic and obvious ‘tool in the toolbox’ for creating a greener, healthier future for our communities and the world. The policy is divided into two parts: make power production as environmentally friendly as possible by using renewable energy, and then electrify everything possible.

For example, energy production in Southeast Asia currently relies heavily on fossil fuels, with renewables making up about 17 per cent of the total energy mix.

The region is one of the most at-risk from climate change yet the tropics are obviously ripe for solar-energy production. Over the next two years, ASEAN has set a goal of raising the renewables ratio to 23 per cent, and most countries have proposed strategies for making their grids cleaner, with most aiming to reach net zero by 2050.

Electrification of transportation has taken on a sense of urgency in many governments in Asia, as they strive to position themselves as EV (electric vehicles) manufacturing hubs and attract ‘clean economy jobs’ by offering tax breaks and incentives to buyers of electric cars, as well as manufacturers, and investing in charging infrastructure.

Currently, EV adoption for four-wheel vehicles in Southeast Asia lags behind Europe, China and the US, but we see that changing. When you can buy a Tesla for the same price as a Camry, as you now can in Thailand, you can expect rapid adoption. And as more people experience driving electric, they want the same experience on the water.

For us, creating products that allow people to have a closer, more authentically enjoyable experience in nature and on the water is just as important as creating climate-friendly products, which we see as the bare minimum task of a company that hopes to be selling products in the coming decades.

But the dream of Torqeedo lies in making boating better in every way: cleaner, safer, easier, quieter and more luxurious. Choosing an electric boat doesn’t have to mean making compromises.

Of its first 200,000 electric motors, Torqeedo produced 100,000 in the last three years. What are the reasons behind this exponential growth?

We were the first to market with many of the original products for emission-free water transportation, and the institutional knowledge created within this company since 2005 is unrivalled in the industry.

Of course, the Covid pandemic brought many new boaters to the water in many markets, as people sought ways to recreate outdoors. The industry was enjoying record order books, overcoming supply chain issues and generalised economic uncertainty.

But the factor that has contributed the most to our recent growth is the strength of the partnerships we’ve built. Torqeedo has partners in over 100 countries around the world, a global, highly professional sales and service network, and is the electrification partner for some of the world’s biggest boat brands and equipment manufacturers. The industry trusts Torqeedo. Boaters trust Torqeedo.

Yacht Style has featured Torqeedo’s collaborations with yacht builders like Beneteau (sailing monohulls), Excess, Ocean Explorer (sailing catamarans), Nimbus, Frauscher, Delphia (motor boats), Highfield and Zodiac (both RIBs). How does the company cater to such a variety of boating types?

One of Torqeedo’s key assets is the array of single-source, turnkey drive systems we provide to the industry.

The Excess 15 offers Torqeedo’s Deep Blue Hybrid system

In the past year, our boatbuilder partners have announced electric boats ranging from small pontoon boats, tenders and daysailers up to Delphia’s electric lineup of inland waterway cruisers and the Swan 88, a large sailing yacht with the Deep Blue Hybrid system.

We continue to make Torqeedo’s emission-free drive systems more accessible, easier to install, and integrate an ever-expanding variety of marine products into our system architecture.

Can you outline Torqeedo’s collaboration with BMW and Tyde on The Icon, which premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May?

Tyde is interesting as it’s building more than just a luxury electric yachting experience – The Icon feels like it’s flying because it’s ultraquiet, smooth and comfortable. The avant-garde design and attention to detail, down to the sound design, are stunning.

Torqeedo, electric motors, boat, boating, Fabian Bez, Heiko Vietmeier, Deep Blue, Lake Starnberg, Munich, Weßling, Nimbus, USA, Thailand, Asia-Pacific, Bangkok, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UAE, Delphia, Beneteau, Excess, Frauscher, Swan, BMW, Tyde, The Icon, Ocean Explorer, Nimbus, Highfield, Zodiac, Travel 1103, Travel 603, Cruise 12.0 R, Cruise 6.0, Webasto, EV, electric vehicles

Torqeedo developed the propulsion for The Icon in collaboration with BMW and Tyde

It’s based on a foiling platform that can be leveraged for a variety of uses, including commercial passenger ferries or tour boats. Lifting a hull up on foils greatly increases efficiency and range. The propulsion system includes twin Deep Blue 100 inboard motors and six Deep Blue batteries.

Leveraging tested, proven components and systems like Deep Blue and BMW’s batteries allow us to share the technology for electrification between land, air and water. It was a very successful project and we’re proud to be part of it.

How is Torqeedo’s production split between outboards (Ultralight, Travel, Cruise, Deep Blue), Deep Blue inboard and hybrid systems, saildrives and pod drives?

In Asia-Pacific, outboards now make up roughly 75 per cent of our sales. These are mostly Travel motors for daysailers, tenders and dinghies, as well as Cruise motors for boats up to around 10 tonnes. We also sell a lot of outboards for water taxis and small passenger ferries. Workboats tend to be heavier, so most of these systems are Deep Blue.

Beneteau’s electric version of the First 44 features two Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 pod drives

Pod drives are a great option for sub-40ft sailboats, which can even charge their own batteries while under sail. Inboard motors are mostly used by electric tenders, catamarans and big sailing boats.

So, what types of boats are best suited for Torqeedo products?

Certain types of boating are ideal for electrification. On sailboats, going electric frees up space below decks, eliminates winterisation and reduces maintenance, plus you can use your electric drive system to charge your batteries. Big or small, sailboats are a perfect platform for electrification.

If exploring rivers, lakes, bays and tributaries is more your style, repowering smaller displacement boats with an electric drive system up to 25hp-equivalent (12kW/48V) can be done yourself or at any boatyard.

Torqeedo’s Cruise 12.0 R outboard

Small outboard electric motors are perfect for dinghies and tenders. They’re super lightweight, clean and quiet, and the dinghy starts with the push of a button, not a pull cord.

If you love to fish in inland or nearshore waters, electric can work for your fishing boat, while displacement cruisers up to around 40ft could consider either a fully electric or a hybrid-electric setup with a diesel generator backup.

If power is the main issue preventing builders of larger luxury yachts from going all-electric, how and when can this be changed or overcome?

Currently, the key limiting element is the energy density of batteries. On a technical level, batteries will continue to advance, as will the infrastructure for electric boating. As a result, our offering will expand, we will enter new markets, and we will gain market share in categories where we already provide solutions.

Marinas are already aware that their shore power capabilities, while adequate for overnight charge, will need to expand to accommodate fast charging. Renewable onboard energy generation, such as solar and hydrogeneration, will continue to increase in efficiency, providing considerable opportunity to extend range and improve life on board.

Torqeedo’s innovative hydrogeneration algorithm for sailing yachts optimises power generation while reducing drag. While sailing, the Excess 15 generates approximately 75 per cent of its daily hotel load consumption.

Every year, solar photovoltaics become more economical and efficient, and we’re incorporating hydrogen fuel cells into the Deep Blue system architecture.

What warranty and service follow-up do you offer owners of Torqeedo engines in Asia?

The standard warranty is two years for recreational use. Torqeedo has service partners in Thailand, Malaysia, China, Korea, Japan, India, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar.

What else should our readers in Asia know about Torqeedo?

In partnership with our management team, Heiko Vietmeier, our CFO, and I are instituting a new strategy for the company. Torqeedo is the trusted partner of the world’s most reputable boating brands, and has one of the most loyal and passionate customer bases you can find in this industry.

To build on that, we will make Torqeedo even more customer-centric by providing more optimised products for specific market segments. Torqeedo is a powerful brand, and we are the pioneers of electric marine propulsion. We’re determined to maintain that position as we define the future.

The yacht retains the low, sporty profile of her Flybridge sisters, while new additions include higher, safer lateral gunwales with painted composite profiles instead of traditional stainless-steel handrails. Owners can choose twin 1,800hp or 1,900hp MAN V12 engines, which produce a top speed of 29 or 31 knots and a cruising speed of 26 or 27 knots, based on provisional data.

Highlights include a 40sqm flybridge, which Riva has described as one of the largest for this size of yacht. Protected by a carbon-fibre hard top with glass panels, the upper deck includes a lounge with dinette and bar in the centre, another lounge area aft and a sunbathing area forward.

Other Diva highlights include the beach club, which features large, drop-down bulwarks that create lateral terraces and increase the yacht’s beam from 6m to 9m. A garage can accommodate a 3.45m jet tender and a sea scooter, while the 35sqm aft cockpit features facing sea-view sofas.

Indoors, the saloon precedes the raised dining area, which offers panoramic views. The galley is forward and can be closed off from or open to the dining area, while also offering access to the helm station and to the foredeck by the port side deck. The interior staircase to the flybridge appears to blend into the decor due to glass walls.

The lower deck has four en-suite guest cabins including a full-beam owner’s suite, while the crew quarters include two cabins for three crew and is accessed by a dedicated walkway.

Raspy-voiced rock legend, Rod Stewart, is letting go of his Beverly Hills home of nearly 30 years with a befitting price tag of US$70 million. The entire estate spans a little over three fully landscaped acres, with the main house at 2648m2 and the guest house at 418m2, sharing between them 13 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, two gyms, two motor-courts, a sheltered garage, a resort-sized pool and a 37-by-18 meter soccer pitch. The estate sits in North Beverly Park, a gated community on a hill for celebrities and the international ultra-rich including the likes of Justin Bieber and reportedly several Saudi princes.

The former Stewarts’ residence is part of rock history in itself, being the place where London-born Stewart recorded his first two Great American Songbook albums. Stewart had Canadian mansion specialist Richard Landry custom build the estate from scratch in the early 90s on a then US$12 million vacant lot. With all but one of the eight Stewart children raised and grown, the mammoth of the mansion is ready to bid farewell to the rockstar and welcome its next billionaire owner.

An English Country Estate

Stewart recruited renowned Los Angeles-based interior designers Thomas Allardyce and Illya Hendrix in the 2000s to bring alive his vision of a grand manor imbued with his love of art nouveau. Allardyce has been quoted revealing that Stewart had a vision of “an English country estate”. “To us, that meant creating the home of a well-traveled individual who has amassed a collection of very fine antiques, art and decorative arts over a lifetime, and combining them in a Neoclassical-style interior,” Allardyce shares.

The estate seems to take after its owner, flamboyant from start to finish. Past the grand gates is a long driveway leading to a royal nine-meter tall fountain in the centre of a roundabout. Swathes of manicured lawn flank you as you walk up to the ornate double front doors.

Inside is a complex puzzle of acanthus and egg-and-dart mouldings, striéd walls, Axminster carpets, illustrious tapestries, polished marble and parquetry floors, all bathed in a warm golden hues. “I must have 200 of the great European houses in my head,” Allardyce describes. The attention to detail in the house is razor sharp, from the glazed chiaroscuro on every egg and dart moulding to each individual chair upholstered in a specific colour of silk velvet and its own animal print. “It’s a house, but you also have to think of it as an environment,” explains Allardyce.

How A Rockstar Hosts

Each living room is lavishly adorned with custom furnishing and collectors’ oil paintings, leaving just enough space for framed Stewart family pictures. The French crystal chandeliers and cascading taffeta curtains add that extra bit of class, while the marble fireplaces return a sense of comfort and warmth into the air.

The gourmet kitchen is flanked by two sitting rooms. One is the main dining room which seats up to 20 guests on its long Regency-style table and high-back gilt chairs. It connects to the extensive network of loggias around the perimeter filled with plush outdoor sofas and ample reading corners.

The second sitting room functioned as the Stewart family tearoom — “What can I say? It’s bred into the English. Every day at four o’clock we have to have our tea. We don’t do cucumber sandwiches and all that. But we will have a biscuit,” professes Stewart.

The main bar features several renaissance nudes on the walls, enjoying ample sunlight from the floor-to-ceiling French windows. A rockstar’s house, however, cannot come without its own hidden speakeasy. The speakeasy is done up with Brèche de Vendôme marble floors and cheeky emerald green wooden walls, possibly an ode to Stewart’s Scottish heritage. It also connects to a movie room which Stewart shares is the most lived-in room on the estate.

Back in the entrance atrium, a grand double staircase leads to the master bedroom with dual bathrooms. The first one is dressed in beautiful jade green marble struck with white veins and a darker, more mature looking wood for the cupboards and pillars. A yellowed striped sitting couch with zebra print cushions sits right in the middle, giving the bathroom the look of old country clubs.

Jan van Hogerwou, Damen Yachting’s Commercial Executive USA, said: “We’ve had a very strong reception to this new Amels design, largely because an owner can step into a new build, make some customisations and yet still benefit from a two-year delivery time.”

The 830GT superyacht offers up to six staterooms including a full-beam owner’s suite forward on the main deck. Designed as a private retreat, the suite features a folding balcony terrace and an adjoining cabin that can be used as a VIP suite, children’s room, office or gym. The remaining four guest suites are on the lower deck, while there’s also accommodation for 13 crew.

Other highlights include a beach club sauna, a Jacuzzi on the sun deck and a touch-and go helipad, and storage for a 9m tender on the foredeck, a notable feat for a yacht of this size. To lower the impact on the environment, the Amels 60 features IMO Tier III-compliant hybrid power and propulsion technology, which contributes to a transatlantic range of 4,500 miles.
