Freewheeler prevails in PGYC’s All Souls Regatta

A severe tropical storm reduced this year’s Royal Cargo All Souls Regatta to one day of racing for the keelboats, but the event’s special spirit and host venue made it an enjoyable affair for all who made the journey.

The weather gods were not kind to this year’s Royal Cargo All Souls Regatta, organised by Puerto Galera Yacht Club (PGYC). Severe Tropical Storm ‘Paeng’ swept-into the Philippines with heavy rain, gale force winds and high seas, causing Gale Signal 1 to be hoisted over Batangas and Mindoro before lunch on the Friday on the eve of the three-day event.

The storm signal closed the ports and stopped ferries and water taxis from travelling, effectively stranding thousands of visitors travelling to Puerto Galera for the holiday weekend on the other side of the Verde Island Passage.

Among stranded passengers were many crews and supporters intending to participate in the Royal Cargo All Souls Regatta and the children’s SBP Optimist All Souls Regatta.

However, of the 31 yachts that had registered for the Regatta, 25 were already in or had arrived in Puerto Galera’s typhoon anchorage before the waters were closed to sailing on Friday and Saturday. That was already a success and demonstrated the strong support from the local and international yachting community that the PGYC and the All Souls Regatta have earned over the years.

Visiting yachts came from as far away as Australia and Malaysia for the event and crew members flew in from Hong Kong, Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Dubai, Japan, UK and USA to participate, while local arrivals included nine young sailors from Albay Yacht Club in Legazpi.

Despite the bad weather and impending threat of a cancellation of racing, the crews were in high spirits and made the most of catching up with old and new friends at PGYC for the welcome party and dinner on the Friday night.

Most returned to enjoy the camaraderie and F&B on a wet and windy Saturday, as all sailing was cancelled due to the weather conditions. Saturday night’s Live Auction raised significant cash for the Small Boat Program to help support the free sailing lessons and training that local Puerto Galera youth enjoy.

A highlight of the auction was a case of Colt 45 beer that went for PHP45,000 (about US$800) from a phone-in bidder from Australia, which surprised many in attendance, especially as it was immediately donated back to the club for auction at next year’s ASR event.

On Sunday, conditions had improved enough for the local Coast Guard commander to give the go-ahead for the young sailors to compete in the SBP’s Optimist Regatta within Puerto Galera’s sheltered bay.

Unfortunately, Signal 1 was still hoisted so the big keelboats could not venture out to race, yet many crews, families, friends and media, photographers and drone operators were on the water to watch the youngsters. The Halloween Party on Sunday evening was great fun for all, with many turning up in costume.

By Monday, the weather gods relented, and the optimism of the yacht crews was rewarded with the lowering of Gale Signal 1 and yachts were cleared for sailing by the Coast Guard.

It was soon all action out on the water, with the big boats racing for trophies in the Royal Cargo All Souls Regatta 2022 in three racing classes: IRC, Racer-Cruiser and Cruiser.

All Souls Regatta, Royal Cargo, PGYC, Puerto Galera Yacht Club, SBP Optimist, Verde Island Passage, Coast Guard, Severe Tropical Storm, Paeng, David Wheeler, Freewheeler, Bellatrix, Karakoa, Hurricane Hunter, Athena, Papaya II, Irresistible, Cape North, Fleeting Glimpse, Philippine Sailing Association, Royal Cargo, Broadwater Marine, Lane Moving & Storage, Lane Archive Technologies, Tricom Projects, Philippine Retirement Authority, Tanduay, Wireless Link, Semper Green Energy, Wisdom, Asia Yachting, Nature’s Spring Magwai, Bayan Ng Puerto Galera, Philippine Department of Tourism, Philippines Sailing Association, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Maritime Police

The Multihull class was removed because only one catamaran had been able to arrive and sail, but the owner was not going to miss out on the fun and went out to compete anyway … in the true PGYC spirit that makes regattas and yachting events so popular in Puerto Galera.

The big boat top-spot went to David Wheeler, who masterfully steered Freewheeler to a resounding victory in the cruising class, ending with such a commanding lead over his rivals that he was accorded the overall trophy for 2022, followed by IRC class winner Bellatrix in second place.

While the big keelboats were only able to manage one day of racing, it was a fast and furious one with some seriously competitive sailing.

At the same time, the youngsters were able to complete their second scheduled day of racing and demonstrated the same competitive spirit that has rewarded SBP sailors with victories in Philippine Sailing Association events and international regattas.

Much of the support for the PGYC’s Small Boat Program comes from the extended club membership and overseas friends. Many thanks are due to our sponsors, local government units (LGUs) and supporting government organisations that make the All Souls Regatta possible. See the full list below.

All regatta sponsors were accorded prime display space at the PGYC clubhouse and in the grounds, and acknowledged at every social and awards event. They were also credited in the regular Facebook and Instagram posts made by the club, reaching more than 16,000 people, and countless thousands more who saw the posters sent to all reciprocal clubs around the Philippines and abroad.

A special thank you to all who attended from overseas, other Philippine yacht clubs and especially to the nine young sailors who made such an effort to get here from Albay. It is also worth noting that the All Souls Regatta provides employment to an additional 30 local staff over the four-day event.

Despite the interference of Severe Tropical Storm ‘Paeng’, the Royal Cargo All Souls Regatta 2022 was a success for the children of Puerto Galera and the sport of sailing in the Philippines, with the club already looking ahead to the PGYC Easter Regatta from April 7-9, 2023.

Kommer Damen received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Maritime Awards Gala in Rotterdam, recognition his years of service to the maritime industry. Kommer Damen, 78, is Chairman of Damen Shipyards Group, parent company of Amels and Damen Yachting.

Rose Damen, his daughter and Managing Director of Damen Yachting, said: “I am amazingly proud of my father to receive this special and well deserved award, as he has been the visionary for this business and is still very involved. My father is a ‘people person’ – a defining trait I was happy to inherit, and a key aspect of the yachting market where everything revolves around relationships.

“It is so important for clients to know they are dealing with key family members, and they pick up such signals very quickly. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work in our family business and for the values my father set out; I cannot think of a more solid base for even greater success in the future.”

Kommer (centre) with daughter Rose (second left), MD of Damen Yachting

In 1927, Kommer Damen’s father and uncle started building boats in a shed next to the family home in the Dutch town of Hardinxveld-Giessendam and established Damen Shipyards. In 1969, Kommer bought the shipyard from his family members. His idea was to produce vessels in series for stock, so vessel operators would have access to proven technology.

This philosophy revolutionised shipbuilding. Building on its success, Damen Shipyards Group went global. Today, the group operates 35 newbuild and repair yards, as well as numerous maritime equipment suppliers, and employs 12,000 people all around the world.

In 1991, the Damen Shipyards Group entered the world of yacht building with the acquisition of Amels. Here, Kommer Damen’s vision was once again applied, with custom yachts being built on proven platforms. It was this approach that led to Amels’ Limited Editions becoming one of the superyacht industry’s greatest success stories.

As Chairman of Damen Shipyards Group, which remains 100 per cent family-owned, Kommer Damen maintains an active role in the business. His son Arnout Damen is CEO, daughter Annelies sits on the company’s board as a non-executive, son Bear combines his career as a film director with being an active shareholder, while daughter Rose heads up Damen Yachting.

The latest award adds to others gained over a lifetime of committed service to the maritime industry, including the Seawork Lifetime Achievement Award and the royal Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Beneteau First 53

Simpson Marine, which has represented Beneteau since 1985, has secured the first sale in mainland China of Beneteau’s First 53 (formerly First Yacht 53). The First series flagship is scheduled to arrive in southern China next year and could compete in the 2023 edition of the Beneteau Cup Hong Kong.

The First 53 is the first Beneteau sailing yacht designed by the Italian duo of Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento. Having worked for America’s Cup teams, the performance-focused Biscontini designed the hull and sailing rig, while Argento was responsible for the deck and interior design.

The 52ft 5in hull has a maximum beam of 5m, with the beamy design for much of the aft half of the hull.

The sporty ‘luxury performance’ yacht is sleek, minimalist and has a teak-laid deck with barely a rope in sight, with the design focused on short-handed sailing from the twin helms. The two L-shaped sofas in the cockpit are clear of the sailing zone.

The Italian builder has launched the first hull of its new 57Steel series in La Spezia, with four sales of the 1,050GT, five-deck superyacht secured.

Sanlorenzo has launched the first unit of the 57Steel line in La Spezia, where the shipyard builds the steel and aluminium yachts in its Superyacht range. Hull one is scheduled to be delivered to her owner early next year and is the first of four sales of the 186-footer.

The 57Steel has an 11m beam, five decks and a volume of 1,050GT,more than double the sub-500GT 52Steel, with the models sharing a similar float-in garage topped by a glass-bottomed pool. In the 57Steel, the aft garage can accommodate a 7.5m tender and water toys, while the beach club area can be expanded to 110sqm by opening the aft platform and drop-down side doors.

Bernardo Zuccon of the Zuccon International Project studio, which designed the exterior lines, said: “The aim was to create a craft of around 1,050GT with functional and lifestyle contents normally found on boats of larger sizes. The challenge was to find the right balance between the volumes and proportions of the boat.

Bernardo Zuccon designed the exterior

“The external lines have a defined and extremely fluid progression in which the yard’s language shines through. We can define 57Steel as a skilful play of balance between content and container.”

The wheelhouse area, normally forward on the upper deck, has been relocated to the deck above, a proper bridge deck as seen on larger yachts. The upper deck includes a large alfresco area aft, a 54sqm owner’s suite and an enormous foredeck including a spa pool and seating and lounging areas.

The main deck, which starts with the outdoor pool, includes the main saloon and a spacious full-beam VIP cabin forward, which is among up to seven guest cabins, most on the lower deck. The yacht also includes a tank deck dedicated to services such as laundry, wardrobe and cold storage.

The three-sided beach club includes a ‘float-in garage’

Studio Vickers of London has worked with the client on the interiors, with John Vickers explaining that his team was tasked with “creating a warm, detailed and inviting interior” for the owner and his family.

“The design process was a huge creative pleasure and the shipyard team responded really well to our design direction, producing a wonderful interior,” Vickers said. “We have worked with Sanlorenzo before and know the care and attention to detail, but on this yacht, it was exceptional.”

Simpson Marine has represented Sanlorenzo in Asia since 2015.

Riva’s Super upgrade of 76’ Bahamas

The Ferretti Group builder has unveiled the 76’ Bahamas Super, the C-Top motor yacht that can be both an open and a coupe.

The 76’ Bahamas Super can reach 37 knots with 1,800mhp engines

Riva has unveiled the 76’ Bahamas Super, six years after the original model with the spirit of both an open and a coupe joined the shipyard’s Open range. The 23m model is another Riva project by Officina Italiana Design – the firm founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta – in collaboration with Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and its Engineering Department.

The yacht has a top speed of 32 knots and a cruising speed of 28 with a pair of 1,550mhp MAN V12 V-drive engines, while the1,800mhp options raise those figures to 37 and 32 knots respectively. The aerodynamic profile of the Shark Grey hull with contrasting Bright Black accents now features more glazing, while there are many new features in terms of digital innovation, functionality and storage.

The C-Top can cover the foredeck or lounge

The Bahamas’ star feature is still the now-legendary C-Top, the aerodynamic carbon top with a patented system that converts the yacht from an open into a coupe and vice-versa in less than a minute.

Lifted by two polished carbon arms, it rises from the deckhouse to a position over the lounge and locks onto the windscreen and carbon roll bar, revealing foredeck seating. The owner can also choose to add the optional side covers to fully protect the cockpit area in bad weather.

The aft cockpit features a huge sunpad

The huge aft cockpit remains the heart of the yacht, with guests able to relax on the large sunpad overlooking the beach area or the aft-facing sofa and neighbouring chaise longue.

The restyling upgrades this area with advanced technology and home automation solutions. The sunpad’s armrests have two built-in panels that offer simple, quick control of the lighting, stereo system and door for the aft garage, which can contain a 3.25m Williams tender and water toys.

The lounge features a dining area to starboard

Forward, the lounge dominates the central part of the deck and is protected by the double-curved laminated glass windscreen with a polished stainless steel frame.

On the starboard side, the dining area is furnished with an L-shaped sofa and a teak table with stainless steel trim that comfortably seats eight guests. Behind this space are various storage compartments that contain the audio equipment and more.

Riva, 76’ Bahamas, Super, open, coupe, C-Top, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Sergio Beretta, Strategic Product Committee, Piero Ferrari, Shark Grey

The port side has a big bar and optional TV

On the port side, the long bar area contains a fridge, an icemaker and a sink, plus an optional grill or TV screen.

The helm is another focus of the upgrade’s new technology. The captain can manage the entire yacht using three 16-inch or 19-inch touchscreens, while the steering system has been converted from hydraulic to a Xenta electro-hydraulic steer-by-wire system with independent control of the rudders. An Aventics joystick featuring docking mode functionality is an option.

The twin-seat helm station

The yacht is fitted with automatic Humphree dynamic trim interceptors, simplifying use and optimising fuel consumption, while a Seakeeper NG18 can be installed to offer greater stability at anchor and when cruising.

The pilot and co-pilot chairs, specially designed for all Riva models by Officina Italiana Design, are housed in a fibreglass cradle and supported by a stainless steel ‘bridge’ for a lighter overall look. They’re joined by a third chair on the opposite side of the sliding hatch that leads below deck.

The saloon on the lower deck

The skilful restyling continues below deck, where decoration draws attention to the yacht’s bold character: the rift-cut white veneer embellished with obsidian varnish is pointed up by black leather trim with white stitching. Stainless steel completes the 76’ Bahamas Super’s style palette.

The stairs lead directly to the saloon, which sits on the port side and features an L-shaped sofa and a coffee table, while there’s a guest cabin to starboard, forward of the corner galley.

Riva, 76’ Bahamas, Super, open, coupe, C-Top, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Sergio Beretta, Strategic Product Committee, Piero Ferrari, Shark Grey

The galley is starboard of the stairs

In the galley, a pull-out wall shelf has been added to increase the available work surface. The galley door is no longer recessed but now hinged, which increases the storage space in the adjacent guest cabin, making it possible to add a sliding drawer.

Riva, 76’ Bahamas, Super, open, coupe, C-Top, Ferretti Group, Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli, Sergio Beretta, Strategic Product Committee, Piero Ferrari, Shark Grey

The full-beam master suite is midships

Midships, the full-beam master suite is furnished with a forward-facing double bed and a cabinet unit on the starboard side, complemented by the en-suite bathroom, which has a new layout. The master lobby has a convenient storage area containing the washer-dryer, while a big locker on the opposite side increases the storage space on board.

The VIP suite is in the bow

The VIP suite in the bow also has an en-suite bathroom, while the layout of the guest-cabin bathroom features a shower separated by a glass partition to improve liveability. Corian – or marble on request – is used for both tops and floors in the galley and bathrooms.

Prestige staged the world premiere of its long-awaited M48 powercat at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival before showing the twin-hulled motor yacht at the Genoa International Boat Show. Designed by long-time Prestige designer Garroni Design of Italy with French naval architect Philippe Briand, the 14.8m yacht has a beam of just 6m, so is thinner but taller than most powercats of this length.

The model has several innovative social areas, starting aft. The central swim platform can carry a tender and lower to become flush with the twin transoms, forming a 6m-wide terrace and allowing access to a toy storage locker.

The platform can also be raised to form an extended lounging area just one step down from the aft cockpit and accessed by a central walkway that separates the L-shaped sofas and two tables, which are from the outdoor collection by RODA, like all the exterior furnishings. When needed, the tables can fold out and connect to provide dining for up to eight guests.

Port stairs lead to a flybridge where the starboard side has a teak table and a C-shaped sofa adjoining a modular sunpad aft and a forward-facing sofa. To port is a wet bar with grill and a bench seat helm station. There’s a large windshield, while the hard top is optional.

The foredeck has an integrated triple sunpad, but the major innovation is an aft-facing C-shaped sofa in the bow. There’s also access to the anchor windlass and storage lockers, while a skipper cabin is in the port forepeak, with a head to starboard.

The saloon starts with a C-shaped galley to starboard, where the aft window can be opened flush with the roof. The lounge to port features a C-shaped sofa, dining table and the option of loose chairs, while to starboard are three steps to a small door to the side deck.

The hull on show in Cannes featured the forward option of a full-beam master suite with a width of 5m, with Garroni describing the 18sqm cabin as “an owner’s suite worthy of that found on a 70 footer”. The cabin has an aft-facing king-size bed, a bathroom with shower to port and a separate toilet with sink to starboard. The optional layout features two en-suite cabins in this area.

Both en-suite guest cabins midships have private access and feature window-facing queen beds that can be split into singles. In contrast to most catamarans, the M48 features a full-beam lower deck, with both midships cabins only separated by a bulwark.

The M48 is fitted with twin Volvo Penta D4-320 V-drive engines. A world leader in 40-70ft monohull motor yachts, Prestige is next set to expand the M-Line with the M68.
