Kevin Pietersen, Hublot’s collaborator who saves rhinos

Kevin Pietersen, Hublot’s collaborator who saves rhinos

SHARE

Luxury watch label Hublot unveils a rhino-inspired Spirit of Big Bang thanks to legendary cricketer Kevin Pietersen.

Bees are a keystone species because of the vital role they play in pollination. We also know about the disastrous consequences if they were to stop pollinating plants.

But let’s talk about Rhinos for a moment because they just don’t get the attention they deserve. As a fellow keystone species, they play a crucial role in the structure and foundation of our ecosystem. Their presence alone supports biodiversity, promotes ecosystem health, and maintains balance. For example, every time a rhino rolls around in mud, it creates a natural waterhole that other animals rely on for drinking. Every time they feed on large amounts of grass, it helps prevent overgrowth, allowing smaller animals to feed. It also simultaneously reduces the risk of wildfires as dry grass can become fuel if left unchecked. You see the point—letting this species go extinct would be catastrophic.

(BRIAN LILLY)

This is where SORAI steps in. Otherwise known as Save Our Rhinos Africa and India, SORAI is a rhino conservation organisation founded by former international cricketer and Hublot ambassador Kevin Pietersen. As a “socially conscious enterprise”, their aim is to bring people and businesses together to build a more sustainable approach to conservation. Since 2018, they’ve supported grassroots organisations that rescue abandoned, injured, and orphaned endangered species and rehabilitate them where possible.

Hublot recognises the importance of rhino conservation, so they’re getting in on the action. They’re partnering with SORAI once again to release the Spirit of Big Bang SORAI, a 30-piece limited-edition of the iconic tonneau-shaped hand-wound tourbillon. As the fourth collaborative watch between both entities, part of the proceeds from the watch’s sales will be donated to the organisation as it continues fighting to protect the rhinos.

Spirit of Big Bang SORAI Grey

We catch up with Pietersen to learn more about SORAI’s efforts, the story behind the new watch, and how the rest of us can pitch in to help these mystical beasts stick around for a few more millennia.

Kevin Pietersen wearing the SOBB Tourbillon Sorai

SORAI has been making strides in rhino conservation since its inception, can you share a significant moment that ignited your commitment to found this organisation?

Kevin Pietersen (KP):There wasn’t a singular moment but it was just a generic continuation of all the conservation and awareness that I have been doing since 2013, because it was 2018 when SORAI started and when I launched the brand and thought of the brand, so it was just a stepping stone in a direction where we thought that we need to up our game in making sure that we continue to raise awareness and significant sums of money and get more people involved.

Can you tell us about the most significant achievements of SORAI since its inception?

KP:Significant achievements so far, I don’t want to talk about SORAI, I don’t want to talk about Hublot. What I want to talk about is the fact that rhino poaching seems to be on the decline at the moment which is exactly why we started doing what we are doing and exactly why we are sitting here now, because of the incredible sums of money that has been raised, because of the targeted direction of where those funds go.

We’ve been very specific on what we spend our money on because we know that if you are specific and you work with trusted organisations and you funnel all the money in the right way, you will make a difference. If you just shoot a lot of money into the air and think, “Hey guys, go and enjoy yourselves” then that’s where you become stuck, especially in a country like South Africa. We have been very targeted on technology, on running the sanctuary, on education and kids. We’ve seen lots of success and when you talk about the rhino numbers coming down it makes you smile.

What do you want the buyers of this watch to feel or understand about their purchase?

KP: The togetherness, the unity and the people. This is about the people, this is really about the men and women, the boys and girls that live in the area and are part of a huge responsibility in looking after a keystone species.

How the proceeds of this watch allocated within SORAI’s initiatives?

KP: It’s for the people, education and technology. The first edition was for “Care for Wild”, that’s why this is so important because of the ability it gives us with the US dollar to convert it into Rands and US dollars goes a long way when it comes to Rands.

How can everyday people contribute to the rhino conservation?

KP: We recently set up a SORAI Rangers Programme which comes from the need to build a human fence. Everybody around the world can in some way shape a form and feel they can make a difference. So we set up a subscription program where people can subscribe for as little as one pound a month and they can feel like they are a part of the human fence no matter where they live and that goes at an incredibly long way in helping us protect these keystone species.

Winner of the Motor Yacht 13-15m category at this year’s Yacht Style Awards in Singapore, the Galeon 440 Fly (click for Review) will be among the highlights of this year’s Hong Kong show as the motoryacht makes its first public appearance in Asia.

The inland Italian builder expects to premiere the 70 Fly motoryacht at the 2025 Cannes Yachting Festival.

The 70 Fly will be the flagship of Absolute’s planing flybridge line

Absolute is developing the 70 Fly, which will become the flagship of the Italian shipyard’s planing flybridge series when it debuts in 2025. As well as the 60 Fly, 56 Fly, 52 Fly and 47 Fly, the inland builder also produces the high-volume Navetta series (48, 52, 53, 58, 62, 64, 68, 70, 75) and the new Coupé line (48).

The upcoming 70 Fly will feature Absolute’s first high-low swim platform, which will include integrated, non-slip steps and dedicated storage for sea toys. “This feature brings a new dimension of enjoyment for those who love the water,” Absolute stated.

The aft cockpit terrace leads to a high-low swim platform

The cockpit terrace includes open lateral balustrades that enhance the views, flexible furnishings and a well-equipped hospitality area with a wet bar, fridge and storage.

Atmospheric external lighting transforms the space into an evocative setting after sunset, showcasing its easy access to the aft bathing platform, saloon, foredeck and flybridge. Like the cockpit, the foredeck includes ambient lighting systems, with concealed strip appliances that give furniture units an appearance of suspension.

The flybridge offers expansive social areas

The flybridge is notable for its low, reverse-raked windscreen, which protects guests and a starboard helm station featuring flush-mounted monitors and intuitive controls. The fly deck offers integrated sofas all along the port side, loose chairs to starboard and an L-shaped wet bar aft of the helm station.

The 70 Fly’s architecture is designed to minimise the barriers between exterior and interior, so guests feel in close contact with the seascape wherever they are on board. This is particularly notable in the saloon’s new six-leaf sliding door on the port side, which opens up the dining area to the outside, offering a blend of indoor comfort and alfresco dining.

The saloon has sliding doors to port

Panoramic windows and slim stainless-steel handrails ensure unobstructed views, while the galley is positioned to serve both the saloon and cockpit. The soft furnishings have also been redesigned, with elegant, full-height curtaining adding luxurious comfort. Absolute has created access from the lower helm to the lateral walkways on both sides, facilitating mooring operations.

On the lower deck, the full-beam owner’s stateroom includes a king-size bed, vanity area and extensive storage. Large windows offer immense natural light and can be opened to offer natural ventilation, while the en-suite bathroom is comprehensively equipped and superbly finished.

The aft VIP cabin mirrors the master’s level of finish, while in between are a guest cabin with two single berths and one with two electrically-convertible berths. The crew cabin has a separate entrance from the lateral walkway, with one or two berths and a dedicated shower.

The new Oceanis 37.1 that premiered at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival is a versatile cruiser that is easy to sail and use, while also being quite spacious and very comfortable. It has garnered accolades and been nominated for several prestigious awards in the US, Britain, Europe and Asia – including the Yacht Style Awards – and won Best Exterior Design under 50ft at the 2023 China Yacht Awards.

The APAC premiere for the 37.1 was in March 2024, through First Marine at the Japan International Boat Show in Yokohama, and the Australian premiere by Flagstaff Marine took place at the Sydney International Boat Show in August.

The hull is flared with a rib to give it fluid lines, greater power and stability

This year, Asiamarine became the new Beneteau sailing yacht distributor in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. NextWave is the new dealer for Beneteau’s motor yachts. Simpson Marine was the dealer in Asia for almost 40 years and will still help look after the hundreds of Beneteau buyers in the region.

According to Beneteau: “Renewing a model is always a challenge particularly when it is one of the best sellers on the market, which the Oceanis 38.1 was in its nine years on the water. The brief [naval architect] Marc Lombard and Nauta Design were given contained two key features: greater volume and improved performance.”

For easy handling, the rigging is brought back to the two aft winches

The new 37-footer capitalises on the innovations of the seventh generation of Oceanis cruisers, which it completes. The eighth model launched since 2017, the Oceanis 37.1 has all the line’s hallmarks plus it offers eco-friendly solutions such as an optional electric motor or sustainable Iroko-wood slatted cockpit floor.

Iroko is an African wood that replaces teak. Made in a new assembly process, called Iro-Deck, perfected by Beneteau, it can be installed for the cockpit decking and provide uniform colour, excellent sustainability, and rule out the risk of cracks in solid-wood decks.

The cockpit decking features Iroko, an African wood that replaces teak

The deck is open and easily manoeuvrable, especially without the traditional back stays – a layout used successfully on the Oceanis 30.1 and Oceanis 34.1. The double spreaders on the Oceanis 37.1 provide excellent performance.

The sensation of space continues around the central table in the extremely open cockpit that’s more than 3m long. For bathing at anchor, the helm seats can be lifted and the wide walkway opens onto a lowered bathing platform, providing safety for a pleasant swim.

The 3m cockpit features a table for socialising while at anchor

For easy operating when shorthanded, the rigging is brought back to the two aft winches. Only the halyards remain grouped around the coachroof. All the instruments, including a seven-inch plotter, can be found on the starboard helm console.

The hull is flared with a rib, giving it fluid lines below water and allowing it to achieve greater power and stability. This also improves the hull rigidity, controls the weight well, and provides greater volume inside the bow.

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1, Asia, cruiser, Asiamarine, Nextwave, Simpson Marine

The interior volume features a saloon that’s nearly as large as on a 40-footer

The interior volume is remarkable, creating a generous space in the saloon that’s nearly as large as on a 40-footer. Offset to port, the saloon features a sofa for relaxing and a comfortable table for six that faces the lengthwise galley.

The forward cabin has a view of the horizon through two large portholes in the hull. In the two-bathroom version, a spacious double bed is positioned starboard against the hull. The stern has been optimised for comfort – in the standard version, there is a king-size double bed and a huge sail locker that can be accessed from inside or out.

The spacious forward cabin has a large bed and two large portholes for viewing the horizon

Also in the standard version, a self-tacking jib makes cruising easier. Meanwhile, the First Line version with its square-top mainsail and furling genoa increases the sail area by 22 per cent.

The Oceanis 37.1 is available with an electric engine with a 12kW pod drive and 10 kilowatt-hour batteries, enough for a cruising range of two hours at 5 knots between two charges, all emission-free and in eco-friendly silence.

The new Seanapps app helps sailors indulge in their passion for boating. With the touch of a finger, they can easily connect, monitor and order services for their boat – from routine maintenance to requesting a wash or fuel, or even a minor or more urgent repair in some markets.

Italian private equity firm Orienta Capital Partners, as an advisory company to FARO Alternative Investments, and American investment firm Lionheart Capital have acquired Sunseeker International from China’s Wanda Group, which had owned the British yacht builder since 2013.

Sunseeker will remain a British company based in Poole, where the primary production, workforce and current infrastructure are concentrated. In the 2023 financial year, the shipyard generated approximately GBP320 million (about US$413 million) of aggregate sales, mainly from yachts in the 15-50m range.

Italian Andrea Frabetti, who formerly worked at Ferretti Group for 25 years, has been CEO of Sunseeker since 2019.

We are confident that under the new leadership, Sunseeker will thrive and reach new heights,” Frabetti said. “Our goal remains to deliver exceptional yachts that embody luxury, performance and innovation, while honouring the legacy and vision of our founders.”

Sunseeker stated that its new co-owners’ experience in the yachting industry will bring added value to the brand. Giancarlo Galeone, Chairman of FARO and the new Chairman of Sunseeker, has strong experience in the yachting sector, having been CEO of Ferretti Group from 1995-2006 and 2011-12.

We are thrilled to start this new journey alongside Sunseeker. Our strong expertise in the yachting industry, combined with our long-lasting relationship with its CEO, will allow us to further enhance the British identity and craftsmanship, driving the brand towards ambitious goals,” Galeone said.

“We can expect a substantial investment into the development of new core and niche models, supporting the worldwide presence of the brand.”

Miami-based Lionheart Capital specialises in the luxury real estate, hospitality and leisure sectors, and has been an owner of the Cigarette Racing team since 2021. Ophir Sternberg, Lionheart’s founder and CEO, is now also co-owner of Sunseeker.

“We are excited to welcome Sunseeker into the Lionheart Capital family,” Sternberg said. “This acquisition represents a strategic investment in a brand with a storied history, including as James Bond’s yacht maker, and a bright future. Lionheart understands the unique dynamics of the luxury yacht industry, and I am confident in Sunseeker’s potential for growth and innovation.”

Amerigo Vespucci

The Amerigo Vespucci — often regarded as “the most beautiful ship in the world” — will anchored in Singapore as the 25th stop on its international tour. The ship will be accompanied by the Villaggio Italia — a showcase of Italian art, culture, cuisine, and innovation. This floating exhibition invites visitors on a sensory journey through Italy’s finest exports, including music, cinema, technology, and scientific research.

Amerigo Vespucci

The official reception began with an opening ceremony on October 24, featuring notable figures from both Italy and Singapore. Key attendees included Italy’s Deputy Minister of Enterprise, Valentino Valentini; Italian Ambassador to Singapore, H.E. Dante Brandi; and the Navy’s Chief of Staff, Admiral Enrico Credendino. The evening was a dazzling event, blending diplomacy with a celebration of Italy’s global influence.

During the four days that followed, the public was invited to step aboard the Amerigo Vespucci to experience its legacy first-hand. From Thursday evening through Sunday, the ship was open for tours, where visitors learned about its longstanding role in training naval officers and its proud representation of Italy on the global stage.

Amerigo Vespucci

As part of the Amerigo Vespucci World Tour, the Villaggio Italia will transformed Marina Bay Cruise Centre into a vibrant hub of Italian culture. Guests to enjoyed to an eclectic mix of events, ranging from art exhibits and musical performances to discussions on sustainability, technology, and scientific breakthroughs. This multi-annual exhibition aims to foster a dialogue on strategic issues such as research, entrepreneurship, and future markets.

Amerigo Vespucci

Supported by Italy’s Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, this tour showcases the best of Italy, from its naval prowess to its entrepreneurial spirit. Singapore, with its global outlook and dynamic economy, is the ideal stage for this Italian celebration, bringing the essence of “Made in Italy” to Southeast Asia. Confindustria, the main association representing manufacturing and service companies in Italy, chose Singapore’s Villaggio Italia to present the 12th “Exporting the Dolce Vita” Report, which analyses the export potential of Italy’s “beautiful and well-made” products on the international scene, with a focus on the fashion, food, nautical and wood-furniture sectors.

As the Amerigo Vespucci sails across the globe, it carries with it not only the traditions of Italian seafaring but also a modern narrative of innovation and excellence that continues to inspire across continents.

Wine Market Growth and Italy’s Position in 2024

Over the last five years, the global wine market has seen steady growth, with an annual average increase of five per cent. This consistent rise has been driven primarily by three key players — France, Italy, and the United States — which collectively represent approximately 60 per cent of the global wine market. The industry’s overall value is expected to reach approximately US$353.4 billion by the end of 2024, with global wine consumption projected at 25.3 billion litres.

Despite facing increased competition, Italy remains a significant force in the wine sector. In 2024, Italian wine exports saw a notable growth of seven per cent, reaching a value of EUR 2.5 billion. While Italy may have lost its title as the world’s largest wine producer to France, the country has shifted its focus towards enhancing quality over sheer volume, with experts predicting that Italian wine exports will surpass eight billion euros within the next two years. Regions such as Emilia-Romagna and Puglia are expected to experience the highest growth in exports for 2024, with projected increases of 4.6 per cent and 4.3 per cent. This highlights the increasing importance of regional diversity and local terroirs in Italy’s wine-making success.

Italy’s wine culture is deeply rooted in centuries of tradition and has long been a hallmark of the country’s identity. However, the past few decades have witnessed a remarkable evolution in the way the nation’s wine industry is celebrated and marketed. Wine festivals have emerged as a powerful force in bridging the gap between vineyard and consumer, transforming Italy’s wine industry into a vibrant and community-centered celebration. From the scenic vineyards of Tuscany to the bustling streets of Rome, these festivals not only boost local economies but also promote Italy’s diverse regional wine heritage. LUXUO delves into the importance of Italy’s wine industry and the significant role it plays in preserving culture, fostering connections, and driving economic growth.

Emerging Trends in the Wine Industry

The wine market in 2024 is also characterised by several key trends. One significant shift is the rising popularity of natural wines, which appeal to consumers seeking minimally processed products with fewer additives. Additionally, online wine purchases are growing, making wine more accessible to a global audience. With increasing consumer demand for transparency, a strong focus on traceability is another emerging trend. This is coupled with the industry’s move towards sustainable packaging, as eco-conscious buyers look for products that align with environmental values.

These findings are drawn from the report titled “Italy in the Global Wine Market. Evolution and Perspectives,” curated by Valerio Mancini, director of the Rome Business School’s Research Centre. This report underscores Italy’s ongoing evolution within the global wine industry, shifting towards high-quality production and embracing new consumer trends to maintain its competitiveness on the world stage.

Driving Local Economies and Tourism

The Sagra dell’Uva festival in Marino

Italy is world-renowned for its vibrant autumn wine festivals, which celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of each region’s terroir – from the volcanic soils of Sicily to the rolling hills of Piedmont and Tuscany. These festivals are key to promoting local wine traditions and showcasing how the land itself shapes the distinct flavours of Italian wines. Rome, as the gateway to many of these renowned wine regions, also hosts several notable events. A prime example is the Sagra dell’Uva in Marino, a charming town in the Castelli Romani region, just outside Rome.

This festival, which celebrated its 100th edition between the end of September and early October 2024, is one of Italy’s oldest and most beloved wine events. The Sagra dell’Uva not only honours the annual grape harvest but also highlights the deep-rooted connection between the land, the people, and the wine that has been produced in the region for centuries. The event is a grand celebration of local culture, with processions, historical re-enactments, and — of course — ample wine tastings.

By drawing thousands of visitors to these small towns, festivals like the Sagra dell’Uva play a vital role in sustaining the local economy and ensuring that Italy’s rich winemaking heritage continues to flourish. These events provide a unique opportunity for wine enthusiasts to experience the intersection of tradition, culture, and modern innovation in winemaking.

Wine festivals have a significant economic impact on local communities by drawing tourists from around the world. These events generate revenue not just for vineyards, but also for nearby hotels, restaurants, and artisanal markets. The influx of visitors provides a vital boost to rural economies, especially in less frequented wine-producing regions which help sustain these areas economically, even outside of peak travel seasons.

Wine as a Cultural & Sustainable Experience

Italian wine festivals are more than just about wine – they are holistic cultural experiences. The inclusion of local cuisine, art, and music alongside wine tastings enhances the overall experience for attendees. This fusion of wine and culture deepens the consumer’s emotional connection to the product, making it an integral part of Italian lifestyle and identity. Festivals like Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars) offer attendees the opportunity to pair their wine tastings with stargazing, local art displays, and regional delicacies. This multi-sensory experience creates a memorable connection that reinforces wine’s role in the broader cultural and social fabric of Italy.

When it comes to promoting sustainability, events like Slow Wine Fair and Sicilia en Primeur promote organic, biodynamic, and natural wines. They also serve as spaces where producers can share innovations in eco-friendly wine production, reinforcing Italy’s leadership in sustainable winemaking on a global scale. With growing concerns about climate change and the environmental impact of agriculture, Italian wine festivals are also becoming educational platforms that raise awareness about sustainability. Vintners who practice organic or biodynamic farming use these events to showcase their commitment to eco-friendly production methods.

A shelf full of Italian wine and spirits in Rome

Italy’s wine festivals are not just a celebration of fine vintages – they are dynamic engines of cultural preservation, economic development, and sustainability. These events serve as vital platforms for promoting regional wine heritage, fostering direct relationships between producers and consumers, and boosting local economies. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and the integration of cultural heritage make these events essential for preserving Italy’s wine traditions for future generations. As wine enthusiasts and producers come together to celebrate, the country’s unique combination of tradition, innovation, and passion for wine continues to be shared with the world.

Benetti has sold the first unit of its B.Yond 57M, just weeks after the model’s official presentation at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show. The 57M is the largest hybrid unit in the B.Yond ‘voyager’ family of yachts, which features advanced eco-friendly technologies, exterior design by Igor Lobanov of Lobanov Design and interior styling by Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.

Daniela Petrozzi, Benetti’s Sales Director, said: “We are proud to announce the sale of the first unit of B.Yond 57M as this demonstrates the market’s positive reaction to our new projects announced at the end of September. We are happy to start this new journey with our client.”

The B.Yond 57M features hybrid technology

The B.Yond 57M is offered with Beach, Air or Water stern configurations. The owner of the first unit has selected the Beach version, which includes an expansive 162sqm beach area and a 15sqm pool that can be covered by a sliding sofa system and converted into a lounging area.

The beach area is directly connected with the convertible garage deck, a 100sqm flexible space that – when toys are in the water – can be converted into a shaded zone, creating an outstanding external/internal area of 260sqm.

The innovative interior layout includes guest cabins on the main deck and the main saloon on the upper deck, allowing for panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows and an uninterrupted, 22m-long open space.

The B.Yond 57M advanced technology includes a hybrid-electric system that allows the yacht to cruise or stay at anchor with zero emissions. A direct-expansion HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) system offers customised temperature and humidity settings while reducing consumption by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional water systems.

Additionally, instead of teak to cover the decks, Benetti has chosen EcoDeck®, a sustainable and 100 per cent recyclable material, while FSC woods and sustainable fabrics, leathers and stones have been chosen for the interior fittings, with water-based paints used for the finishes.
