Following the success of its first-ever hybrid supercar in 2019, the Lamborghini Sián, goes topless for the first time since its debut. The all-new limited edition model delivers the marque’s famed performance with unique hybrid technologies in a roofless design.

The Lamborghini Sián Goes Topless For The First Time Since Its Debut

Heavily influenced by the first countach from 1974, the Sián roadster is conceptualized to be a futuristic interpretation of the coupe, with six retro-inspired hexagonal taillights, airstreamers, an integrated fiber splitter, and Y-shaped headlights. Power-packed with a V12 engine and 48-volt e-motor, this 819 horsepower supercar both supports low-speed maneuvers such as reversing and parking, as well as, high speed travel of up to 217 mph. Storing 10 times the power of a lithium-ion battery, the Sián roadster’s 34kg battery is expected to be at least three times lighter than its conventional alternatives.

Featuring long sculpted contours alongside aero wings which create a powerful profile and reflect back to the countach – the car’s design showcases hints of an optimized aerodynamic body, where airflow is directed through the splitter, front bonnet, side outlets, and rear spoiler.

Available to be coated in any personalized color of choice, the roadster’s open-top cabin design incorporates a mix of new technologies and highly emotional styling, which includes 3D printed air vents, a regenerative braking system, white with blu glauco detailing and aluminum elements which adorn elements such as the control panel.

Chadi Nouri discusses the Future of Swiss Watchmaking for Designers, Brands and Retailers

Entering the luxury industry in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis, Chadi Nouri has paid her dues through the ranks at Cartier and Audemars Piguet and today she is an entrepreneur and consultant for the industry at yet another time of great economic uncertainty.

Nouri is not a familiar name but when you are one of two Nouris, a pair of unforgettable sisters in leadership positions within a male dominated luxury watch industry, one inevitably remembers. Of Swiss-Italian and Iranian heritage, Chadi Nouri spent a few years with Cartier before joining Audemars Piguet, eventually becoming their Product Director. Her sister, Chabi, is the CEO of Piaget, the first woman CEO of a Richemont brand but the stratospheric career trajectories and accomplishments are where the similarities end. Taking a leap into the unknown, Chadi ventured outside the relative safety of large luxury conglomerates and into the cut-throat field of independent luxury retail.

Entering the industry post-Global Financial Crisis in 2009, she has paid her dues in marketing with Avakian, a niche high jewellery brand and today she runs Chadi Luxury, a global e-commerce platform dedicated to vintage luxury goods, and rare objets d’art. Chadi also consults with various brands and suppliers across the luxury segment (not just fine watchmaking) where she advises the entire spectrum of soft and hard luxury, from fashion brands to jewellery brands, from very small businesses to big businesses. An insider with an outsider’s perspective, LUXUO caught up with Ms. Nouri to talk post pandemic luxury design and the threats to retail that now plagues every brand regardless of the size of its pre-covid balance sheet.

Chadi Nouri discusses the Future of Swiss Watchmaking for Designers, Brands and Retailers

Czapek is the latest brand to introduce a luxury sports watch, is the industry going through a creative dry spell? Or are consumers ultimately to blame for everyone jumping on the luxury sports watch bandwagon?

I believe that the sports market in general is expanding throughout all aspects of our lives, whether within the Luxury industry with its sports watch segment, or within the Fashion industry with its increased ‘athleisure’ offer.

Nowadays, men and women tend to favour comfortable accessories which will blend in with their lifestyles throughout the day and sports watches are a perfect example of this need for style and comfort. In my opinion, watch brands should definitely continue to fulfil their sports watch proposal and further grow their women’s offerings as well.

The wait time from authorized retailers is around 10 years on average. And that’s after Patek Philippe raised retail prices on all steel Nautilus models by 20%.

Can there be too many sport watches or is it basically an unmet supply issue as a result of high demand for Royal Oaks and Nautiluses?

There is always space for new sports watches at various price points. However, more sports watch references will most certainly not decrease the demand for timeless, exclusive and instantly recognisable pieces with audacious designs that are Royal Oaks, Nautiluses or Rolexes. Nowadays, in this fast-paced world, watch collectors are more and more looking to invest in timepieces that are perennial and that will both keep their value overtime and be ‘cool’ enough to be passed on to the next generation. Therefore, I believe that there will always be a high demand for timepieces that know how to fulfil just that.

It’s been 50 years. Do you think it’s hard to design another luxury sports watch?

It is definitely hard to design ‘THE’ sports watch even though there are many extremely talented watch designers out there. The key is to be able to design a piece that will enter the elite club of timeless classics with a dashing twist which can captivate the audience not only in the ’now’ but over time and for a long time.

Do you think the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo meets the standard for the 21st century?

The Octo Finissimo definitely meets the standards of today: a well thought out, well designed, thin, sports looking watch.

How do you think the Swiss watch industry will approach their dependence on China?

Is it an issue if you’re counting on one region to be your sole growth engine? Of course it is always an issue to only count on one region of the world to flourish one’s business. However, not all watch brands are, to this day, dependent on China and with the pandemic that we are going through, I believe watch brands will make even more efforts to think outside of the box not only in terms of distribution or product but a total 360° watch ‘think tank’ where everything they did or knew so far is re-thought. A brand that is successful today and in the long run should seek a well-balanced turnover on all continents.

What are some of the positives the pandemic will bring for the Swiss watch industry?

I believe that the Swiss watch industry is an industry that will thrive throughout time. It is an industry that has always found ways to keep up with its surroundings and changing environment. Most likely brands will question the current status quo, they will focus on being more creative than ever before in all fields: product, distribution, production, staff training, etc. They will most likely continue to consolidate their reference numbers and focus on launching timeless classics that will dazzle watch connoisseurs now and in the years to come. I believe that they should focus on helping each other and stop working in individual silos. Retailers and suppliers should also be part of this 360° watch ‘think tank’. Finally, watch brands should no longer leave the digital potential on the side and start embracing this market opportunity as it can totally live side by side with the classic timepieces without cannibalising one another just like Tag Heuer did so well lately with its connected piece.

Moharrak with her TAG Heuer Connected

Some Swiss brands went direct to consumer during the quarantine, some retailers were unhappy about that especially when priority for stock allocation was given to their own brand sites – are we at an inflection point where the middle man is about to be cut from the eco-system?

It is the current foreseeable trend and for some brands it is the path to go, to only sell through their own distribution channel whether through a brick and mortar boutique located at the most wanted locations or like Audemars Piguet with their AP House concept. For other brands like Rolex which is one of the most successful watch brand there is, they work exclusively with retailers. This just shows that although the current trend is to cut out ‘the middle man’ for most brands, both strategies work. Perhaps the traditional way of doing business with retailers needs to be improved and streamlined and solutions to modernise this distribution channel should come from both brands and retailers.

Audemars Piguet House in Hong Kong

What is the biggest fear for the future of the industry?

Lack of creativity, lack of collaboration between brands, retailers and suppliers. The industry needs to speak as one voice, the Swiss Watch Industry. In order to perpetuate the industry’s savoir-faire and craftsmanship, brands should share and embrace their best practices but of course without revealing their trade secrets. By sharing, competition will rise even further and competition is key to promote creativity.

With the death of Baselworld and the re-introduction of watch fairs within the same month, is it inevitable that everyone is under one big show again?

It is in the interest of most brands to be present in one or two fairs during the year for the obvious reasons of bringing clients and press all together at the same time and same place. Some brands prefer to create their own paths and go directly where the clients are. Both ways of doing are, in my opinion, good as they cater to watch connoisseurs who love to be pampered either directly in their hometown or at a central focal point where all brands gather up. That being said, whether brands choose to go one way or the other, the future should hold more digital interactions with clients and press: e-commerce, online launches, creative digital presentations, online constructive sharing chats between clients directly hosted by brands, augmented reality, virtual tours of Manufactures, virtual one-to-ones with watch makers, sales staff, designers, CEOs, etc.

Baselworld ended unceremoniously when anchor exhibitors Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Chopard opted to leave. This prompted LVMH to withdraw participation as well.

Are we looking at another era of consolidation ala SMH/Swatch post-quartz crisis?

It will perhaps be the case as a number of brands unfortunately run the risk to disappear. Clients’ tastes are ever more evolving (currently wanting smaller watches, sleeker, more versatile, etc.) and some brands might not have the right offer at hand and might not have the necessary means to meet the clients’ demands. As such, some brands may benefit from a consolidation.

World’s premier luxury retailer, Harrods, recently opened its first Discount Outlet to drive Post-Pandemic sales. LUXUO will go in-depth into this nascent phenomena as more data comes to the fore

There’s plenty of negative economic impact from this crisis, do you see this as a catalyst for the eventual embrace of pre-owned watches or adoption of certified pre-owned services ala luxury car industry?

I believe that the trend towards the pre-owned business started long before the crisis happened. Due to millennials’ demand not only on quality but also on sustainability, luxury companies need to become more sustainable as a whole even in the fast-paced, fast fashion, materialistic industry we are living in. As such, some companies are early adopters and have already embraced the second-hand market instead of seeing it as competition. Those brands that will be able to integrate newness and sustainability will definitely be ahead of their competitors and last longer in time. I therefore believe that the second-hand trend for watches is, for now, still emerging but has a tremendous potential to become even more attractive in the years to come.

Silolona Leads New Life: Yacht Style Charter Issue 2020

Pioneer of Indonesia’s luxury charter industry, the 50m Silolona is embarking on the 2020-21 charter season with a new lease of life after emerging from a refit in May.

The 164ft Silolona (left) can be chartered in tandem with 134ft sister yacht Si Datu Bua (right), accommodating up to 20 guests

Turning sweet 16 in July, a revitalised Silolona is primed and ready for the 2020-21 charter season in Indonesia, having completed an extensive refit in Bali in May.

The first of Indonesia’s growing fleet of luxury phinisis, Silolona traditionally embarks on a major refit about every five years. And Caroline Payen, Silolona Sojourns’ Yacht Charter Manager, says the 164-footer now looks as fresh as the day she was launched by the Konjo Boat Builders in Sulawesi in July 2004.

“This time, Silolona is like a new phinisi,” Payen says. “A lot of woodwork was processed while keeping the unique Silolona style.”

The 50m Silolona, and her younger 40m sister Si Datu Bua have since been chartering in and around Komodo and neighbouring Flores, where they’ll remain through August. In September, they’ll travel east through the historic Banda ‘Spice Islands’ before heading north to West Papua to explore Raja Ampat and Cenderawasih Bay.

After spending October to May around the country’s most easterly province, the yachts make their way back via the Banda Islands to Komodo for the May-August season.

“The Komodo islands are the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon and a World Heritage Site, and offer world-class diving, deserted pink-sand beaches, while the Flores archipelago has ancient cultures, textiles, world-class diving and scenic volcanoes,” Payen says.

“The beautiful Banda islands have amazing history and stately old Dutch mansions, and are the native home of nutmeg, hence the ‘Spice Islands’. Raja Ampat offers world-class diving and snorkelling in pristine seas, Asmat (West Papua) features ancient tribal customs and powerful art, and guests can swim with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay.”

Like most large charter yachts in Indonesia, both Silolona and Si Datu Bua are fully equipped for diving, one of the key activities in a country boasting some of the world’s most diverse marine life. Itineraries are tailored by the Silolona Sojourns team headed by CEO Tresno Seery, son of founder Patti Seery and a naval architect who designed Si Datu Bua.

Patti Seery is renowned in the industry for developing both phinisis based upon her extensive interests and

knowledge accumulated over three decades in Indonesia, her longstanding friendships with communities, and her passion for Southeast Asia’s art, history and cultures.

“Through our network of traditional villages and peoples, Silolona Sojourns sponsors traditional ceremonies that could not be held due to lack of funds,” says Payen, who adds that it also supports international organisations to raise awareness about the oceans and protect whales, thresher sharks and manta rays in remote islands.

Payen says the yachts and crew are so popular that Silolona Sojourns has had up to 70 per cent repeat clients some years. Chartering both Silolona and Si Datu Bua together is a popular option as it enables large groups of 16-20 to enjoy holidays together, with programmes customised to guests’ preferences.

“The crews are very kid-friendly and have an endless imagination for fun, safe adventures and experiences,” she says. “Also, our chefs specialise in international gourmet cuisine with an Asian flair, and can offer Indonesian cooking lessons upon request.”

Due to Covid-19, Silolona Sojourns is offering to reschedule any charter bookings within a year should a CDC Travel Health Notice of level three or higher for any country to or from the charter destination be issued, or flights be cancelled due to health alerts.

ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Indonesia’s other iconic charter yachts include the 51m Dunia Baru, the famed seven-cabin charter phinisi that has been meticulously maintained since its completion in early 2014.

More recent additions include the 55m Prana by Atzaro launched in 2018 by Yacht Sourcing. The Indonesia-based company is also the charter central agent for this expansive yacht, which has over 9,600sqft of usable space across four decks and a remarkable nine cabins.

Steve Lawler, better known as Mojoko, was born in Iran, raised in Hong Kong and educated in Europe – where he attended the prestigious FABRICA art residency in Treviso, Northern Italy in 2001, before kickstarting his interactive design career at Diesel HQ.

Catapulting through the industry as an Artist, Designer, Art Director and Creative Director, Mojoko established the Kult Magazine, Gallery and Studio, quickly building a reputation for his diversified career in curation, installation, interactive design and fine art.

Having worked with a global network of over 600 phenomenal artists, designers and animators, Mojoko is now the Creative director of The Unusual Network, an international collection of creators, where he is responsible for the quarterly publication of EYEYAH! – an illustrated guide to the world for kids (and kidults).

How Trash TV and Hong Kong Design Sense Inspired Mojoko’s Iconic Career

You are British, born in Iran and you spent your youth in Hong Kong. Quite a start in life! It seems that Hong Kong has always had a lasting influence on your art, why is the city your muse?

Hong Kong was an overload on the senses, the neon lights, the volume of people, the sights and smells were intense. The energy is infectious and the juxtaposition of Western and Asian culture was everywhere, Chinese movies with English subtitles, Rambo movie posters with Chinese typography. I found it fascinating and still do. There is definitely an air of nostalgia about it for me, but it was so futuristic and still does feel like one of the most exciting cities in the world.

Your art is strongly inspired by B-movies, trash TV, and alternative culture. When did it all begin?

I think it was born by rejection of the mainstream. I always hated pop music and big Hollywood films. I found alternative music and culture much more exciting and unusual. For example in a VHS video rental store, I was much more glamoured by the graphics and titles of the weird sections than the blockbuster films. They were much more intriguing and explicit.

Which is your favourite medium to work with? Has collage always been at the very core of your creative process?

Everything I do has an element of collage, it’s the interplay between two separate ideas which create a spark. The creative process is very much started by linking two previously unlinked ideas. This idea multiplies with more and more elements, so the trick is to try and control or guide it so that your concept or theme is understood.

Tell us more about the incredible collection of comic books, 80s advertisements, B-grade movie posters you have amassed over the years. When did you start to collect these? Are these still easy to find or are you now more looking for references and inspiration online?

I must have started collecting around late 90’s. Everything from Rave flyers, typography, vintage catalogues and that just became a habit to seek out the obscure things in flea markets and jumble sales. I used to make scrapbooks and then anything that was not cut up was put into a kind of filing system. I still keep on searching for new (old) things, that’s what keeps me going and triggers inspiration. And yes online has become a valuable resource for finding things, but in Asia there is very little 60s,70’s pop culture documented online, you have to dig for that the old fashioned way.

You love large scale installations as well as unconventional places. You have worked in Singapore, Tokyo, Taipei … Are there any other capital cities you would love to work and exhibit in?

I would be happy to have more shows in Europe. Paris, London, Amsterdam for example. I have sold works there and have some great buyers there, but never had the opportunity to showcase there. I look forward to that.

Mojoko sounds funky and rather universal …. It could come from Japan, Indonesia or Nigeria. When did you adopt this artist name and where did it come from?

Actually the name comes from the Printing process CMYK. I was playing with colour values on my computer and I noticed M=0 Y=0 K=0. It just resonated with me, and yes it felt like it could be African or Japanese or Indonesian. So I loved that versatility of the moniker.

Do you still feel British living in Asia for so long?

I think I have a British sense of humour, but am not particularly patriotic about the UK. I still look to it as a benchmark for creativity and quality content, but I do enjoy a global perspective on all things art, music, film.

Where can we see some of your work online, are these for sale?

The most up to date place to see what am up to is Instagram and if you are looking for archive projects and prints, please visit my website.

You have been in Singapore for over 13 years. What are your thoughts on Singapore’s art and design scene? What would you like to see more of? Any art event you would like to see coming to the island-city?

I think the biggest problem is, and will continue to be, that artists can’t afford spaces to create and show work, the scene is primarily gallery driven, which  means non-commercial work has very little opportunity to grow its influence. Artist run spaces are always where you see the most progressive work, and we (the community) should recognise and try to nurture that.

Are there other countries in SEA which attract you to their artistic vibe and scene: Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar?

I have always loved the visual power of work from the Philippines and Indonesia. They would be my favourite Southeast Asian countries closely followed by Thailand. I would have to say its Korean art which has excited me the most over the years. Always pushing forward, a real thrust for originality seems to be a driver there In terms of medium and subject matter. Their harnessing of kinetic sculpture and craft is most impressive.

You are a favourite amongst many art collectors across SEA. Are some of your artworks already displayed in Museums?

I have had a number of works featured in Museums but most of them were temporary. The Singapore Art Museum has been the biggest Patron, commissioning a mix of digital installations and sculptures over the years. I have some Museum projects in the pipeline but they are still under wraps for now.

Tell us about your current show in Singapore, “The Secret Room”. What can we expect to see?

‘THE SECRET ROOM’ delves into mystery and intrigue of the past but with a modern twist: deconstructed antiques, traditional paintings and objects infused with contemporary internet culture. The installation features over 20 new artworks in varying traditional mediums, such as rosewood furniture, lanterns, ceramics and glass but with a modern twist.

If you were to name one mentor who has inspired you in your path as an artist, who would that be?

During my second year at University we had a film module which was led by Dr.Chris Mullen. He introduced me to the visual telling of stories and world of alternative cinema. He was the most knowledgeable person across so many subjects. He has one of the largest comprehensive archives of imagery online here: http://www.fulltable.com/VTS/index2.htm

Automobili Lamborghini and The Italian Sea Group unveil design of spectacular 60-knot Tecnomar inspired by Sián FKP 37 super sports car.

Automobili Lamborghini and The Italian Sea Group will launch the first 60-knot Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 next year, having recently revealed details of the supercar-inspired motor yacht.

The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 will reach 60 knots with twin MAN V12 2,000hp engines

With a design influenced by the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, the sleek 19.2m yacht is being built by The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Tecnomar and Admiral luxury yacht brands and NCA Refit.

With twin MAN V12 2,000hp engines, the 63-footer will be Tecnomar’s fastest model, with a top speed of 60 knots. The use of carbon-fibre material – typical of Lamborghini super sports cars – enables the ultra-lightweight yacht to weight just 24 tonnes.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said: “Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 will become as futuristic an icon as the car she is inspired by. Selected owners around the world will own not only the fastest Tecnomar motor yacht in the fleet but a Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 masterpiece.

“I’m proud we have chosen to create this innovative and challenging project with Automobili Lamborghini, which links technology, supreme design, quality and performance.”

Designed in collaboration with Lamborghini’s Centro Stile (‘Style Centre’), the yacht was inspired by the Sián FKP 37, the hybrid super sports car incorporating a supercapacitor and groundbreaking technology, and offering customised colours and details.

The yacht’s super sporty exterior is characterised by a sporty silhouette, with an aerodynamic hardtop is inspired by Lamborghini roadsters. The hull and superstructure are created from a high-performance shell developed by naval engineers specialising in hydrodynamic sciences.

The bow lights are an homage to the Lamborghini concept car Terzo Millennio and the Sián FKP 37, both distinctive for their Y-shaped front lights.

Lamborghini’s iconic clean lines, hexagon shapes, Y-motif and materials are incorporated into the design, together with the fully customisable colours and materials in the manner of the company’s Ad Personam programme.

As in Lamborghini super sports cars, details are finished in carbon-fibre, with Lamborghini’s Carbon Skin used in the sports seats and on the helm, styled as the super sports car’s steering wheel. Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, said: “Our co-operation on this yacht allows the essence of both organisations’ style and expertise to be transferred to different worlds, sharing in their diversity to interpret and add value to the final product in a new environment. If I had to imagine a Lamborghini on water, this would be my vision.”

Monaco Yacht Show 2020 Cancelled, Fort Lauderdale ‘On Track’

Informa says the Monaco Yacht Show will return in September 2021 and still plans to stage this year’s Fort Lauderdale show.

Organiser Informa Markets has announced that the 2020 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show has been cancelled. The show organiser said it had been in discussions over the past few weeks with superyacht industry stakeholders and partners to understand the challenges facing yacht owners, shipyards and brokers due to Covid-19.

This year's Monaco Yacht Show was scheduled for September 23-26

This year’s Monaco Yacht Show was scheduled for September 23-26

Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive of Informa Markets, said: “Like many other industries, the international superyachting community has experienced significant disruption in 2020.

“As we move to the other side of Covid-19, we are remaining agile in how we are supporting our partners and customers, flexing our events calendar, adapting products and providing digital alternatives where beneficial to best meet the needs of international communities through this difficult period.”

Informs had discussed with show partners including the Principality of Monaco to determine if a low-density, not-for-profit support edition – a concept announced in late May –  would have been practical and beneficial to the market.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be held in September 2021

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be held in September 2021

However, with much of the superyacht fleet currently located in the US and Caribbean and the normal calendar of activity severely disrupted, Informa decided to cancel this year’s show and stage the 30th edition in September 2021, three decades after the first edition in 1991.

Informa Markets said it was still pushing ahead with this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 28-November 1 and expects more than 900 boats – including 100 superyachts – to be on show.

McCurdy added: “We are focusing our efforts in the latter part of the year on delivering a strong platform to showcase the industry at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October, with the Monaco Yacht Show now set to return in style in September 2021, when it will celebrate its 30th anniversary.”

The United Nations Environment Programme launched Clean Seas in February 2017 with the aim of engaging governments, the public and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic pollution. Over five years, this campaign aims to address the root-cause of marine litter by targeting the production and consumption of single-use plastic.

In 2016, RHKYC became one of the first yacht clubs to ban single-use plastic bottles, bags and straws. Following the new partnership, the club and RHKYC Team Agiplast will promote Clean Seas and its values, create education plans to highlight the problems of plastic pollution, and inspire through example.

Agiplast, sponsor of the club’s Youth America’s Cup entry, has been regenerating plastics for over 25 years and its main focus is to supply processing companies globally with sustainable plastic raw materials, so eliminating the need for virgin plastic materials.

Youth America's Cup: RHKYC Team Agiplast Selects First Five Sailors - LUXUO

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has selected its first sailors from a provisional pool of 12 to join RHKYC Team Agiplast, the Club's challenge for the Youth America's Cup 2020-2021. The first five selected sailors are Calum Gregor (21), Nicolai Jacobsen (17), Maria Cantero (22), Jackie Truhol (21) and Aymeric Gillard (23).

Max Dubreuil, Partner, Agiplast, said: “For Agiplast, the Youth America’s Cup challenge is already a very exciting journey. To create a deeper meaning to our involvement as a plastic regeneration compounder, we initiated this partnership with Clean Seas. This pledge is a commitment for all parties involved to act better, plan better and do more when it comes to plastic waste reduction.

“This pledge is a way for us to further educate when it comes to plastic waste. Our mission is to reduce ocean waste, and make sure scrap materials are collected and channelled back into new materials with the same grade as a virgin material.”

Youth America's Cup: Chris Rashley To Coach RHKYC Team Agiplast - LUXUO

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has appointed Chris Rashley as Head Coach of RHKYC Team Agiplast, the club's entry into the Youth America's Cup, which will be sailed on the new AC9F 9m monohull foiling boats.
