A collaboration between Sino Eagle and MarineMax, Aquila has become the world’s largest powercat builder in its first decade, with all its 28-70ft models produced at its ultra-modern, purpose-built facility in Hangzhou.

The 11-hectare Aquila facility includes four construction buildings, an indoor test pool, riverside launching and a modern office block

It has been over a decade since the Aquila 48 premiered at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2013 before being put into the MarineMax Vacations charter fleet.

US-based MarineMax, the world’s largest yacht dealership, had announced the model at the previous year’s show, having established a collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Sino Eagle, which had already produced the Aquila 38, a model that sold about a dozen units.

Lex Raas initiated the cooperation by connecting MarineMax co-founder Bill McGill, then CEO, with Frank Xiong and the Xiong family, owners of Sino Eagle, a leader in high-tech composite manufacturing. Other key early players included J&J Design Group and Seaway.

Sino Eagle established a dedicated Aquila factory in the attractive inland city of Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, which provided the brand with full in-house manufacturing capabilities. Latin for eagle, Aquila has since soared to become the global leader in power catamaran production, today producing models from 28-70ft across the offshore (Molokai), Sport and Yacht ranges.

CLEAN & GREEN

The site has since been expanded and today the 11-hectare (110,000sqm) facility comprises four massive construction buildings, an indoor test pool, riverside launching facilities and an ultra-modern

administration block.

Hangzhou is often revered as one of China’s most beautiful cities and is paired with another lakeside city in the Chinese proverb: “In heaven there is paradise, on earth there are Hangzhou and Suzhou.”

In Hangzhou, Aquila has over 500 employees in the office and its modern production facility owned by Sino Eagle

The Aquila factory reinforces that sentiment and is genuinely impressive. ‘State-of-the-art’ is an often-misused description of a modern, technologically advanced production facility, but in Aquila’s case, it’s absolutely warranted.

While the factory has not gone to full robotics – Aquila employs over 500 factory and office workers – the construction methods, quality control and overall management of every aspect is exceptional. Their aim is for perfection in every aspect of the build process.

It’s also a ‘green’ factory, with significant effort made to reduce emissions. Sino Eagle has invested heavily in environmental protection to look after the environment and their employees. There are expansive solar panels on top of the factory roof, designated cutting rooms with strong evacuation fans to prevent dust collection inside the factory, and a filtration system for grey water.

Aquila has a 288m-long assembly factory

Tommy Qian, Aquila’s Sales Manager, explains: “We believe that the cleaner the environment in the factory, the better the quality of the parts and ultimately the better the finish of the boats.”

GLOBAL GROWTH

Since launching its 100th catamaran in 2017, Aquila’s production levels rose to almost 60 boats a year in 2018 and 2019. Output rose again in the Covid era, with annual production soaring to 110 units in 2021 and about 150 in 2022.

“This growth is largely due to having a strong professional, passionate team, the highest quality construction, a strong dealer network and the world’s best catamaran designers drawing up our boats,” Qian says.

There were about 50 boats in various stages of construction when the author toured

The US is by far Aquila’s largest market, accounting for 75 per cent of the company’s production, while sales in Europe, Australia and other markets continue to grow. Two of Raas’s sons work for the brand. Jean Raas is running all of Aquila’s new projects, while Alain Raas is the Aquila Brand Manager at MarineMax.

This year, the company has set a production target of close to 200. Qian says that target could be challenged by supply-chain issues, especially with larger components such as engines, generators and air-con systems. Composite materials and timbers are easier to control due to being available locally.

Qian feels that another reason for the success of Aquila is all the boats are built using high-tech composites, high-density PVC foam, with vinylester and resin infusion. Construction also includes high-density PVC/fibre, resin-infused/foam composite bulkheads rather than ply.

“Every component in an Aquila power catamaran is as good as we can source, either locally or from overseas suppliers, and we never compromise on quality,” Qian says.

A computer system tracks work progress on the production line, with the ability to pull up drawings for the workers. As part of the quality control, every component has a barcode and every worker an ID. Each product is allocated a time to complete the task and employees receive a bonus if they can pass the required quality checks in less time than is allocated.

The shipyard is truly state-of-the-art

“We work closely with our staff. If they can see a way to make our processes more efficient, we listen and, if necessary, implement the changes,” Qian says. “That way, we’re all working towards producing the best products we can in the most efficient time frame.”

MULTIPLE DESIGNERS

Slovenia-based J&J is the anchor designer for Aquila and has pencilled the 44 Yacht, 54 Yacht and flagship 70 Luxury, as well as the original 48, while it’s currently working on three new models in the Sport, Yacht and Luxury segments.

In recent years, Aquila has worked with other renowned designers including French studio VPLP Design, founded by Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost, which pencilled the 42 Yacht that debuted this year and is working on another model. Kirk Clarke from Hawaii designed the 28 Molokai in conjunction with Jure Zule, Aquila’s Chief Designer.

Aquila’s designers are working on new models with the likes of J&J Design, VPLP and Chris Peart

South African Chris Peart of Peart Yacht Design was responsible for the new 47 Molokai from the Offshore series and is working on another Molokai model and a Sport model with a patented foiling system.

Lex Raas says: “This will be a breakthrough design and incorporate a lot of the latest foil technology in the world. This is a super exciting boat.”

Morrelli & Melvin Design & Engineering was behind the brand’s 4.2m and 5.3m RIB powercats, which owners often choose as the tender for their Aquila catamaran, while the US studio is also responsible for the Aquila Hydro Glide Foil System option.

All upholstery is done in-house

Introduced on the 36 Sport, the system consists of a main hydrofoil slightly aft of midships that spans each hull, so bridging the tunnel and helping lift about 40 per cent of the hull’s weight out of the water at cruising speeds. Further aft, twin fins act like an aeroplane’s horizontal stabilisers to prevent porpoising at higher speeds.

TESTING & REFINING

Apart from the 28 Molokai, all Aquila model designs are CFD and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tested for structure stresses to identify the high-load areas.

Raas says this is extremely important in the bulkheads of higher-speed powercats. It’s also why the fore and aft bulkheads on boats like the 70 Luxury and 47 Molokai are made of 100 per cent epoxy infused carbon, to be strong enough to accept the torsional loads and not get too heavy.

Aquila catamarans are built using vinylester and resin infusion, high-tech composites and high-density PVC foam

“Whenever we’re moving into new areas, we’ll also do a full test programme as soon as we can get a splash out of the hull,” Raas says. “We place a basic deck on and then ballast up to expected weights and then will rigorously test. This was done on the 36 Sport and 28 Molokai, and we’ll be doing the same with the next Sport model.”

Production of composites at the Aquila shipyard is based on emission-free closed moulding technologies used for all GRP components, from the smallest to the largest. The results are clear, lighter and stiffer boats. In addition, this technology is environmentally friendly by eliminating styrene emissions, which also protects workers.

Vinyl ester resins are infused and vacuum bagged. Resin Transfer Moulded (RTM) is used for hatches, which are frequently opened providing a gelcoat finish on both sides. Technical fibres, like biax, triax or quadriax rovings, are applied on specific high-stressed areas, and UDs (uni-directional fibres) and carbon fibres are also installed.

Woodwork is also done in-house

All structural panels, even small flat wing bulkheads or bracings, are made from PVC-cored composites, and high-density foams are used instead of plywood, which is only used to produce furniture.

Special care is taken to keep the workshops clean, well-lit and dust free. All areas where infusion is made are temperature and humidity controlled, with monitoring systems showing all figures on displays.

Qian says: “We run full pre-delivery checks on every boat, either on the river or the smaller boats in our indoor test tank, before shipping them to our dealers. Once the boats are finished, depending on size, they are either trucked or barged to the Port of Shanghai for worldwide distribution.”

The build process is digitally monitored

Aquila also spends significant time on is propeller optimisation. Every boat the company launches undergoes an extensive in-house testing programme for props and engine heights. When managers are satisfied they’ve got the best results, the boats go to market.

Raas explains: “The recommended props are quite different to the final ones. The fact there are so many variances shows this is clearly not only a science but also requires a vigorous testing process. Adding in foils to the equation presents a whole new set of opportunities for optimisation.”

Aquila offers a five-year structural hull warranty, and all other equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty.

EXPANDING RANGE

Aquila currently offers eight powercat models: the 28 Molokai and 47 Molokai high-speed fishing boats, the 32 Sport and 36 Sport cruisers, and the 42 Yacht, 44 Yacht, 54 Yacht and 70 Luxury flybridge models.

The 36 Sport is now Aquila’s most popular model, overtaking the long-standing 44 Yacht, with each model selling over 200 units.

The remarkable 54 Yacht has also been a hot item, with about 90 sales across the world and production booked through to late 2025. Depending on the model, delivery times are between 12-24 months.

The most recent addition to Aquila’s portfolio is the 47 Molokai, which features the company’s first double-stepped hull along with four outboards and can reach over 60 knots.

A world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 25-29), the 47 Molokai combines fishing capabilities with luxury appointments and is the big sister of the well-established 28 Molokai.

The four-engine 47 Molokai is tested near the Aquila shipyard ahead of its world premiere

“We see the high-performance, centre-console outboard powercat market as one of the fastest expanding segments in the US,” Qian says. “The 28 Molokai has been extremely successful for us, so I’m confident the 47 Molokai will be a big seller.”

As illustrated by all the models in development with various designers, Aquila is continually developing new catamarans as market influences dictate, so expect much more from the shipyard over the coming years as it seeks to consolidate its leadership position in the powercat sector.

“We’re always open to suggestions,” Qian concludes. “We love feedback from our owners and dealers on how we can make what we already consider great boats even greater.”

The F1 star is full of praise for the 60 Sunreef Power Eco after taking delivery of the Polish builder’s smallest solar-electric powercat.

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso has taken delivery of the first 60 Sunreef Power Eco, having commissioned the solar-electric powercat in 2021 and joined Sunreef Yachts’ cast of ambassadors, which includes tennis legend Rafa Nadal, former F1 star Nico Rosberg and explorer Mike Horn.

Alonso, 42, ordered hull one of the 60 Sunreef Power Eco and the Aston Martin driver was closely involved in the build and customisation of his catamaran, paying numerous visits to the builder’s main shipyard in Gdansk on Poland’s north coast. The 60ft yacht has a beam of 35ft-plus beam, a vast aft cockpit with a swim platform and aft garage, a full-beam bow terrace and generous flybridge.

Following delivery, the record holder for most F1 races enjoyed a yachting holiday with friends and family on board his luxury Category A catamaran, which is fitted with Sunreef’s unique ‘solar skin’ system on the hulls, superstructure and hard top.

Featuring electric motors, an energy-saving air-conditioning system and a custom-engineered battery bank, the eco-friendly catamaran offers a continuous supply of clean power for a smooth e-motoring experience.

The 60 Sunreef Power Eco gave me exactly the yachting experience I was looking for. Long, fume-free and quiet cruises let you enjoy the seas on a whole new level. This yacht has some amazing technology that cannot be found anywhere else,” said Alonso, who recorded his 100th F1 podium finish in this year’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

On board, all that matters is peace of mind, fresh air and good company. Yachting should not be about ego. For me, it’s about sharing good moments and being respectful towards the environment.”

The 60 Sunreef Power Eco is the third powercat from the Eco range and follows the 80 Sunreef Power Eco and 70 Sunreef Power Eco models, which had world premieres at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, represented by hulls three and one respectively.

In late October, the 80 Sunreef Power Eco had its US debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with the display of represented by hull two, Sol. Sunreef’s dealers in Asia include Hong Seh Marine in Thailand and Lee Marine in Thailand.

The largest Centre Console model in Jeanneau’s family of Cap Camarat outboard cruisers, the 10.5 CC is ideal for families, fishing, partying and just all-round fun on the water.

The Cap Camarat 10.5 CC benefits from a Michael Peters hull

Now on the water and ready for some fun, the Jeanneau Cap Camarat 10.5 CC is the largest Centre Console model in the French builder’s Cap Camarat line of outboards and a sporty sister to the 10.5 Walk Around.

Designed as a real crossover boat, this 36-footer in GRP makes the most of convertible features to meet the needs of everyone from serious fishermen and dedicated parents to diehard party animals, a tough bill to fill.

The exterior lines are balanced, well-proportioned and feature interesting details, like a strake that swoops down the side of the boat from fore to aft to finish level with the swim platform, creating visual movement and dynamism.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

The 10.5 CC can be powered by two 425hp Yamaha V8 outboards

However, Michael Peters’ hull design is more about seaworthy performance than good looks. The deep-V hull shape makes the Cap Camarat 10.5 CC a wave eater and double chines clearly point in the direction of performance.

As do the twin 425hp Yamaha V8 XTO outboards that you can’t help but notice when you board the boat from the swim platform. And you certainly notice them when you take the wheel.

Under the T-top, the three helm seats are comfortable and designed to flip back when not in use to make passing through the area easy. The windshield and side windows add to the protection offered by the T-top and visibility is excellent especially when standing. Grip the helm wheel, ease the throttles forward and you’ll enjoy the 850hp the two Yamahas offer.

The skipper sits in the middle of three centrally placed helm seats

It’s easy to keep track of the boat and everything that’s going on around it because all navigational info is displayed on Garmin flat screen panels. Add joystick control that makes for simple and intuitive manoeuvring, and you get a winning combination of horsepower and ease of use.

CLEVER LAYOUT

The clever layout of the cockpit, updated by Sarrazin Design, can almost make you forget the ‘vroom’ factor. Designed to be a crossover, the Cap Camarat is set up for fishing with a large and open cockpit that lets you move freely and quickly around the boat. But look more closely at the hull sides and you see L-shaped banquet seating that folds down to create a dining area.

A separate photo shoot showing it set up for fishing (above) and with the drop-down benches and cockpit table (below)

Just behind the console, a hatch opens to reveal an outdoor galley with a sink and optional fridge and grill. There are six built-in speakers around the boat in case anyone’s in the mood for a little celebrating. Come to think of it, the fridge and icemaker would be as useful for storing ice and drinks as they would be for storing the day’s catch.

Or maybe you could reel in the day’s catch then cook it up right then and there in front of an appreciative audience. This is what versatility on the water is all about.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

The bow area can include a table or be filled in with cushions

God is in the details, as Mies van der Rohe said, and the Cap Camarat 10.5 CC has one that proves the Jeanneau team really knows about the little things that make a boat a home.

Open the port side door then lift the floor panel and you’ll find a swimming ladder that simply folds out along the side of the hull and into the water. No fetching or mounting required if anyone wants to take a dip, a feature that’s sure to keep everyone aboard happy and in their element.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

Biminis can cover the forward and aft ends of the boat

The two passages around the centre console are wide and give easy access to the foredeck, which is set up with a C-shaped couch fore, a teak table and a double sun pad that converts to twin chaise longue seats by flipping down an armrest.

Adjust the table height, add cushions and the whole area can become a large sunning zone or mount an awning on poles to lounge in the shade. Either way, it’s a perfect spot for relaxing with friends or family.

MORE BELOW

There are still more areas to explore. A sliding door on the port side of the console leads down to the lower deck.

A door on the port side reveals stairs to the lower deck

A surprisingly large living space fore gets plenty of light through a ceiling hatch and hull windows at the front and sides. Adjust the height of the central table and the whole area becomes a cabin that shares a bathroom including a separate shower stall with a second cabin set up with a mirror-backed double berth.

Seen from below deck, what had at first looked like a fishing boat or a fast-moving floating party spot has become an ideal boat for a family weekend getaway.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

Topped by a large sky light, the forward lounge can be filled in to create a double berth

Fishing with buddies, entertaining friends, enjoying some quality time with family: the Cap Camarat 10.5 CC can adapt to fit the bill. But what if someone aboard tends to get seasick? There’s an option for the Seakeeper 2 gyroscopic stabiliser that stops the boat dead in its tracks, so to speak.

And if the fish are finicky or if there’s a light sleeper aboard, the boat can run in hotel mode for hours in silence using a lithium battery pack.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

The midships cabin can be set up as two singles or a double

If you’re on the market for a Range Rover of the seas, the Jeanneau Cap Camarat 10.5 CC just might fill the bill. Well designed, sturdy, safe and fast, this boat is remarkable for its crossover versatility and convertibility.

Dress it down and use it as a fishing boat, dress it up and lay on a party, take a group of friends out for an exclusive day trip, or pack up and head out with the family for an overnight for even a long weekend.

Jeanneau, Cap Camarat, 10.5 CC, centre console, Michael Peters, Sarrazin Design

The cockpit features a wet bar and drop-down bench sofas aft, starboard and port

Play the speed freak and exploit the horsepower then switch on the Seakeeper and enjoy the calm. This is the boat for having fun on the water, no matter what your idea of fun may be.

Simpson Marine, Beneteau’s long-time dealer in multiple Asian territories, organised the handover in Hong Kong. Its Taiwan team then organised a grand premiere in Keelung featuring a spectacular lion dance. It was the latest APAC debut for a Beneteau sailing model in Taiwan, which received Asia’s first Figaro 3 and First Yacht 53 in late 2018 and mid-2020 respectively, while an Oceanis Yacht 54 was delivered in late 2021.

The Oceanis Yacht 60 features naval architecture by Italian Roberto Biscontini and deck and interior design by compatriot Lorenzo Argento, who also collaborated on the First 53, Oceanis Yacht 54 and the new First 44. The First 44 had its regional debut at this year’s Yokohama Floating Yacht Show, where dealer First Marine presented the model along with an Oceanis 51.1.

The programme in Hong Kong included model viewings and sea trials of a First 36 across two days. Despite record-breaking rainfall, over 30 guests gathered at Hebe Haven Yacht Club to view and explore the high-performance yacht. Visitors enjoyed a relaxing atmosphere with food and drinks provided and participants enthusiastic about the capabilities of the First 36.

Hot on the trails of the major Geneva watch fairs comes the second iteration of Singapore Watch Fair, the premier consumer watch fair in Asia. Founded by Ali Nael and Nelson Lee, the fair will bring together an impressive international line-up of 24 independent watchmakers such as Cultured Watch, Sartory Billard, Ludovic Ballouard, L’Epée 1839, LANG 1943, Zehua Tan and 2ToneVintage Watches amongst a host of retailers and industry professionals. The city only just hosted the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix, but it seems like visitors from all over will be streaming back in soon, this time for a bountiful taste of watchmaking savoir-faire instead. This year’s fair would be held at the luxurious Equarius Hotel at Resorts World Sentosa, nesting the fair in a private resort island.

Exclusive Looks at Gems New and Old

The fair will boast a panorama of horological marvels new and vintage, valued at up to USD25 million. Standout pieces include the breathtaking Upside Down Osmium from Ludovic Ballouard. Those well acquainted with the Geneva independent watchmaking scene might have already heard of Ludovic Ballouard’s Upside Down collection, a quirky yet intriguing labour of love with its upside down numbers. The Upside Down in this case has its dial made from one of the most precious metals on the globe, osmium, and its numbers in onyx. The result is more precious gem than timepiece, the osmium fluctuating between silver and blue hues as it sparkles under light.

Those more interested in vintage beauties might be interested in The Essence of Time Museum put up by watch investment advisory firm FutureGrail with curation from former director and curator of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, Arnaud Tellier. Expect some of watchmaking history’s rarest pieces from the likes of Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe and Rolex. Of course, the added pleasure of appreciating the investment-grade collection alongside fellow horology aficionados. A sneak peak at some of the offerings from Christie’s Hong Kong’s autumn auction in November will also be on display for avid collectors in the crowd, promising fair-goers a holistic experience of the collecting world at large.

Amongst Aficionados

Of course, what would a watch fair be without some talk of the very watches on display? The fair’s “Talking Time” panel sessions will bring together watchmakers, industry experts and veteran collectors together to share and discuss their takes on the horology and collecting world today, featuring renowned guest speakers like Gary Getz and Dr. Bernard Cheong. The fair also makes it a point to spotlight South Asian and China both with a joint discussion on the “Rise of Chinese Watchmaking” by Atelier Wen and Zehua Tan as well as the “Rise of Female Watch Collecting: Insights from The Middle East” led by TickTockBelles in collaboration with Dubai Watch Club Girls and Kuwait Watch Club Ladies.

Chang Chee Pey, Senior Vice President and Chief Experience Officer, RWS, says, “Luxury timepiece appreciation and collection has a strong appeal for both Singaporeans and tourists. Over five days in October 2023, Resorts World Sentosa will host watch collectors, retailers, and industry professionals from around the world who will gather to share their horological passions in a series of curated lifestyle events amidst the exclusive setting of Equarius Hotel. The Singapore Watch Fair is part of RWS’ year-round vibrant and thematic offerings that also include Michelin-starred dining and world class attractions.”

Singapore Watch Fair 2022Scenes from 2022’s iteration.

Singapore Watch Fair 2023 promises to be quite the treat for watch lovers, uniting niche watchmakers built on a passion for horology with a generation of discerning watch collectors hungry to connect on a global scale in a lifestyle festival designed to foster greater connections between watch lovers on both sides of the market. The fair will run from 18 to 21 October, the full itinerary and list of exhibitors available here.
