The Eco division of Sunreef Yachts offers natural fibre composites for interior and exterior furniture and fittings.

Natural fibre composites pair flax fibre with bio-based or recyclable resin

Sunreef Yachts Eco has introduced natural fibre composites (NFC) as it seeks to make all aspects of the yachting experience more energy efficient and responsible. The natural fibre composites can be used in furniture, fittings and fixtures, both indoor and outdoor.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

On the flybridge, NFCs can be used in the jacuzzi, ceiling, bar, table and sofas

The shipyard’s R&D department developed natural fibre composites as part of the process of building sustainable yachts, with Eco yachts including energy-saving technology like the Sunreef’s patented solar skin, hydrogeneration, wind turbines, lightweight lithium batteries and energy-saving air-conditioning.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

NFCs can also be used in the console and base of the helm seats

Natural fibre composites use flax fibre to obtain high-quality composite structures with excellent mechanical characteristics. The fibre is paired with bio-based or recyclable resin to create solid, reliable natural composites. The flax fabrics can be woven into countless patterns and can be dyed into an endless variety of colours.

Sunreef Yachts Eco, natural fibre composites, NFC

NFCs have a negative CO2 footprint

Flax fabrics demonstrate a negative CO2 footprint, due to the absorption of CO2 during the plant growth. The natural fibre composites can be recycled by extracting both the resin and the fibre, to give both materials a new life.

Damen Yachting has delivered the third Amels 60, Khalidah, to her owner. The 60m, 830GT Amels Limited Editions superyacht will remain at the Amels headquarters in Vlissingen City until departure.

Khalidah features custom interiors by Winch Design that feature light materials, woods, scattered pops of colour, artistic elements and high-tech lighting and entertainment solutions. The room divider in the owner’s suite is created with carefully selected art pieces and sea-related items, and lighting and music can be altered to set the mood in any area at the touch of a button.

Espen Øino penned the timeless exterior design, which includes the Amels 60’s eye-catching signature trapezoid windows.

Rob Luijendijk, Director of Sales at Damen Yachting, said: “Her striking design, future-proof package and proven capability are just some of the outstanding qualities of the Amels 60. To see so many of these yachts with their owners in such as short space of time is incredible.”

The owner of Khalidah has appointed Deeside Maritime for the final stages of the build and the operational management of the yacht.

Nick Flashman, the owner’s representative, and founder and Director of Deeside Maritime, said: “I’ve worked on a number of Amels new builds over the years and have great experience of working with the Damen Yachting team and their fantastic technical build platform and operational performance.

“It was this experience and knowledge that the owner and family office were looking for when appointing someone to not only oversee the crucial final stages of the build but to take the operational management of the yacht forward beyond delivery. The delivery represents one of the more significant milestones as, together with the yard and the owner’s team, we mark the move from build towards onboard enjoyment.”

Features include space for a 9m tender on the foredeck and a beach clubhouse with a sauna and steam room. The sun deck is a flexible space and can include a Jacuzzi, barbecue and touch-and-go helipad. The Amels 60 series features cutting-edge equipment and technology including IMO Tier III-compliant hybrid power and propulsion.

Joppe Osté, Project Manager at Damen Yachting, said: “This proven hybrid system currently offers the best solution to reduce harmful emissions, reduce noise and vibrations while benefiting from lower fuel and maintenance costs. It also allows you to cruise up to a certain speed without using the main engines, solely cruising on the generators.”

With a background in architecture and a fascination for vivid surfaces, this “digital painter” has mastered the art of distortion.

Italian-born Gioele Amaro is a renowned contemporary artist who has successfully melded different mediums of art to deliver his one-of-a-kind abstract pieces. Taking inspiration from his love of Paris while keeping his Italian roots in mind, the 37-year-old has successfully redefined the concept of “painting” with his merging of physical subjects with the virtual world. Amaro’s artwork often explores the complexity of forms and shapes while showcasing his mastery of colour theory. Incorporating the use of rich materials and innovative surfaces, this self-described “digital painter” aims to emphasise the distortion of reality with his work. With a portfolio of work that includes numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and China, Gioele speaks to LUXUO on his artistic journey, what inspires him and how art is shaped by digital innovation.

An architect by training, you have worked with Jean Nouvel, a revered and multi-award-winning French architect for three years before turning to digital painting. Tell us how this creative journey began.

Every single aspect of the architectural process is almost always digital, so moving from handmade sketches or paintings to digital ones was a smooth and gradual move. Architecture was the best way for the emancipation of the digital world without any remaining doubt.

Clue us in on your close collaboration with Italian artist and filmmaker Francesco Vezzoli.

I always admired the way he was able to be conceptual, figurative, nostalgic, and empathic at the same time. Some of the processes that bring the works of Francesco to their final results were really inspiring because you can feel this love and passion for the development of a concept and how to face it.

As an Italian who fell in love with Paris, what artistic qualities do you find in Paris?

Like all the big cultural cities in the world, it allows you to be who you want to be and follow your dream with a very big chance to fulfill it if you give it your all. Things happen in Paris because there is a genuine creative energy that is neverending.

Image courtesy of HdM GALLERY and Gioele Amaro

I heard that you recently had a collaboration with Valentino, and your artwork was on a billboard at Avenue de L’Opéra. What was that collaboration like?

I only had a positive experience with the team. I am always fascinated by how people who work for a large brand and have such a personal and precise idea of what they like, give you unconditional freedom to express your vision completely free from schemes and expectations. From this, you realise how they believe in the power of creativity and expression even before commercial rules. The real gift for an artist is to feel safe to experiment without any kind of limitation.

You have rapidly evolved from traditional media such as painting, photography, and drawings to computers, graphic tablets, and digital brushes. This is the epitome of a versatile digital artist, right?

Every real artist follows his own intuition related to his own historical period and context. I feel I am going in the right direction if I try a new trajectory not yet completely known. For me, this is only a way that represent my values and my beliefs other visions need a different approach. The quality is not only in the medium you express yourself in but in what you want to say and why.

What is your first approach to your work and how would you describe your practice?

It is a never-ending process that can start when you are busy doing other things or when you are waiting for your train the idea is the most exciting thing. Then comes the realisation and the joy of seeing your intuition taking a form or collapsing and having to face the reality of the situation. Sometimes you see the potential of some ideas only while you are in the midst of making them.

Where does the inspiration for your work come from?

I will never find an answer to this question. Inspiration for me is not something related to the context or the situation, it is more a state of mind open to suggestions, dreams, to visions, and exciting thoughts that could happen in a negative or positive situation. Of course, movies, books, the virtual and reality are the proverbial “churches” and “factories” for suggestions.

What emotions do you hope to evoke in the viewers when they look at your art?

I don’t like to think about it because it would make the process be influenced or distracted by the viewer’s judgment but it is often unconsciously oriented to the desire of giving a new key to see things. Disorientating is rewarding.

In your case, is creating a new painting a solitary process?

I need to give time and space for the new idea to grow in my head and be powered by emotions and feelings that could also be calming from their external identity.

The six words that describe best your art?

Coloured tiles that bare the soul.

You mentioned several times that you wish to explore the infinite possibilities of digital innovation. Are there still some limitations that you encounter on a daily basis?

Breathing is literally “oxidising” your body. Stairs are remainders that we cannot fly. The limit is both a challenge and a satisfaction, like going to a new level in Super Mario Bros.

What should art lovers and collectors expect from you at ART SG 2024 at the HdM Art Gallery booth?

Fairs really change the way people approach and access contemporary art. Thousands of people discover your works even if surrounded by billions of different approaches and sensibilities. Being present in a crowded place is the first step to perceiving people’s feelings and about your work, be it in a positive or negative way. It is always important to understand what you are doing. I discovered a lot about myself listening to people’s thoughts, being self-centered is often an easy trap for an artist I don’t pretend to create feelings or emotions but I will love for some in the other way. Originality and talent are not something that we should look for but mostly the way the work of an artist could fit and investigate with our fears and desires to create a pointing start for fertile reflections.

Any artist who has inspired you on the contemporary art scene lately?

This may be a little taboo because for some, I like their personality, some the technique, others the form, and giving a list may associate them to me but for the wrong reasons. I usually like it when there’s a sense of humour and irony inside a piece and I like understated works.

Image courtesy of HdM GALLERY and Gioele Amaro

As an artist, what is your take on the contemporary art system?

I think the world and people are moving too fast now to have a unique static point of view. Opinions and facts are changing daily, the difference is the ability to anticipate the future. NFTs, fairs, digital art, numbers, scandals, tastes, politics, beauty, AI; the elements are too unstable to make a clear point. I like the idea that an “unknown” artist can be discovered easily with Instagram and have a platform to express themselves even without the support of a gallery.

What is the role that an artist plays in the society?

Underline hypotheses.

What is the most rewarding part of working as an artist?

The very long interviews.

Sanlorenzo Asia presented the Collectors Lounge at the 10th edition of West Bund Art & Design, a four-day event held at the West Bund Art and Exhibition Centre as part of the Shanghai Art Week.

A first-time participant, Sanlorenzo Asia collaborated with long-term partner Wei Gallery to present the triptych artwork ‘Deep Blue Love’ by artist Alixe Fu. The display booth utilised the brand’s minimalist design, with the ocean artwork flanked by two LED walls.

Sanlorenzo, Asia, yacht, builder, West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai Art Week, Wei Gallery, Alixe Fu, Deep Blue Love

Created with the concept of “embracing the sea and thinking like a whale”, the French-Chinese artist’s latest piece is made of oil painting on canvas and multiple materials, and depicts the issue of looking after the planet and its ecosystem.

Fu frequently integrates the concept of environmental protection and public welfare into his personal creations. With ‘Deep Blue Love’, he expresses his concern for plastic pollution and calls for the reduction of waste and protection of the earth.

Sustainability and ocean protection is a component of Sanlorenzo’s Road to 2030 strategy, which focuses on clean energies and sustainability.

Born in 1961 in Yunlin, Taiwan, Fu currently lives between Taiwan, Paris and Beijing. His experience of living in France for many years has allowed him to embrace Western art movements such as Cubism and Surrealism while maintaining his experience of traditional Chinese art.

Working on oil paintings, colour ink, sculptures and public art, he has travelled to Paris, New York, Tokyo and elsewhere around the world for exhibitions. His works have been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and other institutions in Europe, America, and Asia.

Sanlorenzo’s presence at West Bund Art & Design is part of the brand’s long-term commitment to art, which includes being the global yachting partner of Art Basel. The shipyard also created Sanlorenzo Arts, a collection of interactive works and projects covering sustainability, environment, technology, nature, sea and humanity.

Dubai Harbour will host the Dubai International Boat Show for a third successive year as the Middle East’s biggest yacht show returns for its 30th edition from February 28-March 3, 2024.

The 2023 edition in early March attracted more than 28,000 visitors, 1,000 brands and companies, and featured over 200 boats including 44 global and regional debuts according to the show’s long-term organiser, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

UAE builder Gulf Craft is traditionally the leading exhibitor at the show and last year debuted several models including the Majesty 111 among its 15 boats in the water. Other brands on show with local dealers included Riva, Pershing and Ferretti Yachts of Ferretti Group, Azimut, Sanlorenzo, Princess, Sunseeker, Sunreef, Riviera, Lagoon, Beneteau, Jeanneau, De Antonio and Say Carbon Yachts.

The 68m Soaring built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen was the show’s largest yacht and was exhibited by Ocean Independence, which also displayed the 37m Tecnomar Evo 120 Viktoriia with The Italian Sea Group. Other superyachts included the 47m Heesen Anita shown by Behnemar and the 32m Baglietto Lady Maia exhibited by BlackOrange.

The Middle East’s boating market has risen post-Covid, with many major builders reporting increased sales and appointing new dealers. Over the past year, Camper & Nicholsons and IYC are among superyacht brokerage houses to open a regional office in the UAE, while Sunreef Yachts has opened both an office in Dubai and a new production facility in Ras Al Khaimah.

The maritime sector accounts for seven per cent of Dubai’s GDP, while the MENA region has the second-highest fleet to billionaire ratio, DWTC states. In addition, the Middle East has experienced a 16.9 per cent surge in ultra-wealthy individuals and the UAE is the top destination for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).

The Majesty 111 has a clean, sporty exterior and a foredeck jacuzzi

Gulf Craft’s first Majesty 111 has enjoyed global exposure since its world premiere at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. In September, the 34m, six-cabin Sandbank made its Europe debut at the Monaco Yacht Show before exhibiting in the US for the first time at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of October.

Joining the Majesty brand’s Superyacht range, the 111 sits between the best-selling 100 and the 120 tri-deck. However, the first yacht to feature full exterior and interior design by Phathom Studio has a cleaner, sportier, more muscular and modern exterior than her Majesty sisters, with the yacht long band of glazing along each side of the lower and main decks, with the yacht topped by a black skylounge.

Mohammed Alshaali, co-founder and Chairman of Gulf Craft, has accompanied Sandbank on all her major show appearances and been delighted by the response to the first Majesty 111, which is available for charter through Northrop & Johnson and was listed for sale in late October.

“Because of the images and photos, everybody loved the Majesty 111 even before they saw it at the shows. Everybody said it was futuristic,” Alshaali says.

“Phathom really know how to draw nice lines and how to match the interior with the exterior. They introduced new features like the jacuzzi on top of the master-suite skylight and the big upper-deck skylight, while they also brought in environmentally friendly materials.”

PHATHOM STYLING

Phathom was founded in the Netherlands in 2019 by three designers – Canadian Sean Bekeschus, Spaniard Raquel H Grijota and Dutchman Fabian Henke – and Jacob van de Haar, the company’s Commercial Director.

The Majesty 111 is the first to feature exterior and interior design by Phathom

All three designers have experience at Guido de Groot, with Henke there for almost a decade. Bekeschus, a former intern at Nuvolari Lenard, also spent four years at Cor D Rover, where his portfolio included the exterior of the 58m Royal Huisman Phi, while Grijota, an interior designer, spent two years with Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design.

Phathom has recently worked on several projects with Gulf Craft including the interiors of the Majesty 72 (Review, Issue 71), Nomad 101 and upgraded Nomad 70 SUV, also collaborating on the exterior upgrades of both the latter models. However, Phathom started from scratch when designing the look of the Majesty 111.

Bekeschus, 38, says: “We looked extensively at the marketplace. For the exterior, we wanted something athletic, a little bit brawny, but classic and timeless – we didn’t want anything superfluous.”

LIGHT, COLOURS, CURVES

With an overall length of 110ft 10in, the semi-displacement flybridge motor yacht is closer in scale to the Majesty 100 (108ft 4in) than the four-level Majesty 120 (123ft 1in). However, the Majesty 111 has 15 per cent more volume than her little sister, with 243GT of space helping provide large social areas and comfortable accommodation for 12 guests and up to five crew.

Starboard view of the aft cockpit

A closer look at the aft garage door reveals a 12ft-wide bench seat, a simple but effective design touch, while Sandbank’s toys include a 4m Agilis jet tender, wakeboard, waterskis, donuts, Seabobs, wing mat and paddleboards.

Unlike its two sister models, the Majesty 111 has a clear aft balustrade in the cockpit, reflective of its more modern design and Phathom’s desire to offer owners more sea views. The open-plan cockpit can be hidden from onlookers by a drop-down screen and was initially dressed with sofas and chairs, which were later replaced by a large dining table for 10.

The interior features natural materials and a contrasting colour palette

The saloon doors are flanked by two wide columns partially covered in fluted wooden panelling, a feature also seen extensively inside the yacht. The interior starts with two chairs facing a long, cream-coloured L-shaped sofa to port, while custom furniture includes a large, round-edged coffee table with a lift-up central circular locker.

Curves and rounded corners are evident throughout the interior, as are a variety of colours, tones and materials including an extensive use of oak. However, the high, white ceiling keeps the mood light and incorporates recessed lighting as well as a drop-down TV.

Grijota, 40, says: “When we designed the interior layout, we wanted to appeal to a wider range of markets, so we made it less formal and wanted to open the spaces while letting in lots of light, which you can see throughout the yacht. In the fittings and décor, we played with natural materials and contrasts. Our palettes have a lot of contrasts.”

Forward is a large dining table for 10, which is literally reflected in the ceiling above by a table-sized mirror fitted with an artistic, suspended lighting fixture. The area is served by the large galley, which is accessed by a door on the port side. On either side of the dining table are rounded, hip-height cabinets, matching the one starboard of the saloon.

Stairs to the skylounge are followed by stairs to the lower deck

Forward is a transparent, floating staircase to the upper deck, which acts as a centrepiece for the yacht alongside the lower-deck stairs, while the starboard hallway leads to an elegant day head with a huge window and onto the master suite.

CABINS APLENTY

The master-suite entrance starts with a hall featuring a low storage cabinet beneath starboard windows. On the left is a sliding door to a walk-in wardrobe, before another sliding door leads to a twin-sink bathroom with an enormous shower including a bench seat and a big window.

Port view of the master suite, which has an aft-facing bed with a skylight view of the jacuzzi

The full-beam bedroom features the bed facing aft to a huge, fixed TV, although it’s the view above that’s potentially most captivating – into the glass-bottomed jacuzzi! Fittings include ‘floating’ bedside tables topped by large shelving units, an elegant, multi-level vanity table cum storage unit, and a large sofa on the port side of the room.

The five guest cabins on the lower deck are accessed by an illuminated staircase, which even benefits from the huge skylounge skylight at the top of the central staircase. The lower-deck hall leads aft to two ensuite cabins with forward-facing double beds, while forward are two en-suite twins with aft-facing beds.

The VIP suite in the bow is one of five lower-deck guest cabins

However, the trump card is in the bow, a 15sqm VIP suite that starts with a port hallway featuring full height cupboards either side of a vanity desk.

The bedroom has an aft-facing bed flanked on each side by a bedside table that blends into a long storage cabinet, while there are built-in shelves either side of the soft-panelled bedhead. The starboard side of the room even has another full-height cupboard beside the bathroom door.

SKYLOUNGE & SKYLIGHTS

The central staircase leads all the way up to the upper deck and is topped by a huge, rectangular skylight that helps illuminate the skylounge as well as the stairs. The skylounge is set up with a large L-shaped sofa to starboard that faces a big, brawny bar to port that even incorporates a huge TV.

Seating in the skylounge faces an enormous portside bar fronted by a huge TV

It’s no ordinary bar in terms of size or design and includes a wine fridge and even a dishwasher, so with a day head at the top of the stairs, the skylounge can become a self-contained party zone.

Meanwhile, there’s more fun to be had on the open aft deck, which is partially covered by a skylounge overhang fitted with louvres. The covered area includes an outdoor galley to starboard and cockpit stairs to port, but otherwise the deck can be configured as an owner wishes.

Symmetrical side decks lead around the skylounge and wheelhouse to the foredeck, another fun social area with a C-shaped sofa and two tables facing the huge jacuzzi, which is surrounded by sunpads on three sides. It’s then four steps down to the working area, which surprisingly has a cosy aft-facing sofa in the forepeak.

The bow is overlooked by the reverse-windscreen wheelhouse, which contains a central leaning post for the skipper, an L-shaped sofa and folding table to starboard, plus a side door to port. The yacht is fitted with twin 1,900hp MAN V12s and has a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 12.

Overall, Phathom’s vision for the Majesty 111 has resulted in a notably forward-looking design shift for Gulf Craft.

“We collaborate well with Gulf Craft, maybe because we’re a young company and more flexible than longer-established design studios,” Grijota says. “We’ve studied the DNA of the shipyard and tried to keep it on the Majesty 111, but we believe this is a level up. We wanted to incorporate features that would be unique selling points and look good on a yacht this size – and we think it worked out well.”

In a Column for YACHT STYLE, the Sales Director at Simpson Superyachts gives his perspective on the state of superyacht sales in Asia-Pacific.

Simpson Superyachts, James Clayton, Sanlorenzo

James Clayton, Sales Director, Simpson Superyachts

According to industry reports, the number of superyachts in the Asia-Pacific region has seen a notable uptick, with an average of 100 superyachts over 30m visiting the region each month – and this figure is growing.

In Hong Kong alone, over 100 30m-plus superyachts are registered following a 10 per cent increase in registrations over the past fiscal year. This surge is emblematic of a burgeoning interest in luxury maritime experiences among high-net-worth individuals across Asia.

I attribute this growth to several factors, most notably the region’s expanding affluence and a cultural shift towards embracing the exclusive yachting lifestyle. Asia has become a hotspot for superyacht enthusiasts, with over 25,000 islands to explore, due in large to two of the world’s biggest archipelagos, Indonesia and the Philippines.

There’s a diversity of unspoiled nature that attracts yacht owners willing to explore more unchartered waters, with the region offering the allure of exploring pristine coastlines and secluded island paradises.

Hong Kong and China, with their rapidly growing economies, have taken centre stage in the regional superyacht market, yet other APAC nations like Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia are not far behind. Australia, on the other hand, is an already developed and mature superyacht market, with major growth opportunities.

In fact, we’re witnessing a diversification of interest across the region. Clients are not just seeking a vessel; they’re investing in a one-of-a-kind life fulfilment experience, with a superyacht opening a whole world of opportunities for them.

Kamakasa, the second Sanlorenzo Alloy

In terms of vessel preferences, there’s a notable trend towards larger, more technologically advanced superyachts with alternative propulsion systems.

Discerning buyers in Asia are increasingly drawn to superyachts equipped with cutting-edge amenities, state-of-the-art navigation systems, and eco-friendly technologies like recently presented methanol fuel cell systems and alternative nature-powered generators with wind turbines and solar panels.

This shift aligns with a global movement within the superyacht industry towards sustainability and innovation.

However, there have been challenges posed by the ongoing global supply chain disruptions, which have been affecting the timely delivery of superyachts to Asia. The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the supply chain, impacting production schedules and, consequently, delivery timelines. This is a hurdle the industry is actively addressing to meet the growing demand.

The answer to long waiting times can be a quality brokerage superyacht, as there’s currently good market availability in the 40-50m and 50-80m segments. Over the summer, Simpson Superyachts sold the 44.5m Kamakasa, which was delivered in 2020 and is the second hull of Sanlorenzo’s successful Alloy series.

I’m optimistic about the continued growth of the Asia-Pacific superyacht market. The potential in this region is immense. As we navigate the challenges linked to inconsistent regulations and lack of quality superyacht marina berths in some key locations, we’re also presented with opportunities to redefine the luxury yachting experience in collaboration with our clients in Asia.
