The Poole shipyard has worked with MTU to develop hybrid propulsion for its 42M and 50M Ocean models, with Van Oossanen developing the world’s most efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form for the larger superyacht.

Graphic of the MTU hybrid system for Sunseeker

Sunseeker has collaborated with Rolls-Royce to offer MTU’s first series-production hybrid propulsion system on its two largest Superyacht designs, the 50M Ocean and 42M Ocean, which are among the shipyard’s new generation of superyachts.

MTU’s integrated hybrid system for the 50M Ocean includes onboard generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, and control and monitoring systems, and can be expanded

on a modular basis. It offers six operating modes from all-electric for silent, emission-free cruising, through to use of the twin 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines.

Modes include the automated ‘smart hybrid’ and ‘charge hybrid’ that enable all power sources to be used as required. In ‘electric’, propulsion and on-board power can be supplied by the generators, optimising fuel consumption and comfort for long and overnight passages up to 10.2 knots. ‘Silent’ uses power solely from the batteries, offering nearly three hours of propulsion or seven hours of on board power in silent anchoring mode, with no emissions.

Van Oossanen has designed a Fast Displacement Hull Form for the 50M Ocean

Sunseeker and MTU UK – which have worked together for two decades – laid the basis for the hybrid propulsion system back in 2010, with tests carried out on a prototype yacht. Sales Director Sean Robertson, who has worked Sunseeker since 1986, says: “The way owners are using their boats continues to evolve. Efficiency and noise reduction are now as important as features and volume.”

For the 50M Ocean, which will be built in metal by ICON Yachts, the yard worked with Van Oossanen Naval Architects on an innovative Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). The hybrid hull’s slenderness and special form produces a very low wave profile over the full speed range and was ranked by the Wolfson Unit as the most efficient in its database, a lofty accolade considering the UK-based firm has carried out towing tank tests on about 1,200 hull forms since 1968.

Sunseeker says the FDHF concept improves the efficiency of a vessel by 15-20 per cent compared to conventional displacement and semi-displacement hull forms, representing a significant reduction in consumption, emissions and operating costs.

The 50M Ocean is also offered with Hull Vane technology

The FDHF is also offered with Hull Vane® technology. Positioned below the stern, the patented fixed-foil, fuel-saving device influences the stern wave pattern, creating a forward-orientated lifting force that lowers the pitch motion and running trim. The combined effect of the FDHF fitted with the Hull Vane reduces fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent in total, according to Sunseeker.

Furthermore, the yard has been working with technical partners to ensure solutions are in place to implement selective catalytic reduction (SCR) on its larger superyachts to drastically reduce harmful emissions.

However, the bulk of Sunseeker’s production is across its Manhattan (52-68), Predator (50-74), Sport Yacht (65-74) and Yacht (76-100) ranges, and although its history is steeped in fast, high-performance boats, there’s increasing demand for efficiency and other factors from new owners.

Sunseeker’s new models include the Manhattan 68

Douglas Culverwell, Sunseeker’s Regional Business Manager for Asia, says: “Sunseeker has always offered a diverse product range, both in type – compare the Predator and Yacht lines, for instance – and performance. However, performance is increasingly being used to describe attributes other than speed and agility. Now, quietness, lack of vibration, fuel economy and reduced emissions are also a measure of performance.”

Its hull designs vary between model ranges, from out-and-out dynamic performance – witness the 62-knot Hawk 38 unleashed in 2019 – to long-range cruising and everything in-between.

“Hull design is of paramount importance to us and over the decades we’ve developed and refined an easily driven, soft-riding, deep-V hull design,” Culverwell said. “In certain models, this is optimised to offer lower resistance at lower cruising speeds, while other models focus on higher planing speeds.

“However, Sunseeker has also designed and developed semi-displacement and displacement hull forms that offer even greater endurance and efficiency with less power than their smaller stablemates. The 42M Ocean and 50M Ocean were designed with this firmly in mind.”

The 52-year-old blended whisky has been finished in a single cask for 14 years

Royal Salute has launched an ultra-rare, limited-edition blend known as the Time Series 52 Year Old Single Cask Finish, meticulously and expertly crafted by Sandy Hyslop, Master Blender at Royal Salute.

Blended in the historic Strathisla Distillery in the Scottish Highlands, the Time Series is created in the exacting spirit of Royal Salute’s founding – befitting of royalty, a tribute to the British monarch and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

An intense fruity combination of aromas greets its owner when nosed, with ripe plum, toffee red apples and hazelnuts covered in dark chocolate prominent.

Of the 52 years of slow, patient maturation of this liquid gold, the last 14 were spent in a single cask, which gives the whisky a soft, creamy texture. On the palate, pear syrup and hints of liquorice enhance flavours of sweet orange marmalade, ginger and scented cloves.

Only 106 bottles were made of the rare blend

“It’s a personal privilege to create such an outstanding whisky for Royal Salute,” Hyslop says. “The longer the whisky matures, the more intricate it becomes.

“With 52 years of ageing, the delicate balance of some of the rarest of our whiskies has created an unrivalled depth of flavour and unbelievably complex characteristic, making for a remarkable expression that perfectly shows that time is a key element of our creations.”

The 52-year-old whisky is a single-cask finish blend housed in a hand-blown Dartington Crystal decanter engraved with a unique number. Every bottle is presented in a five-layered wooden box, each representing a decade of the blend, making it a true collector’s item.

Only 106 bottles were made, further highlighting its rarity. And of the four bottles allocated to Singapore, only three were made available at S$48,888 each. The other bottle was auctioned off during Pernod Ricard Singapore’s 30th-anniversary party, with all proceeds donated to charity.

The 21 Year Old Malts Blend was a Double Gold winner in the 2020 International Spirits Challenge

If the Time Series is out of reach, keep an eye out for Royal Salute’s 21 Year Old Malts Blend, a Double Gold winner in the 2020 International Spirits Challenge.

The Malts Blend is crafted with more than 21 precious single malts, each aged for a minimum of 21 years from the five whisky regions of Scotland, which pays homage to the royal 21 Gun Salute that the brand name draws inspiration from.

Notes of orchard fruits, enriched by subtle spices greet the palate as the profound whisky offers up its harmonious blend of the various single malts.

Nestled within the eastern continent as the Cradle of Art is Indonesia, an archipelagic country with 17,000 to 18,000 islands lining the equator in Southeast Asia. From vivid and energetic abstract abstractions to highly sophisticated and detailed photorealistic paintings, there is an artform catering to the palate of every individual emerging from the prism of artists residing there. Art Republik skims the talent pool of the land to identify 15 Indonesian artists who are distinctive trailblazers of 2021.

I Nyoman Masriadi

Exaggeration is the name of the game when it comes to the paintings of the 37-year-old Yogyakarta-based artist. Often clad in bulbous bodily features, Masriadi’s figures are often derivations of video games and comics. Through the deformation of his subjects, he recalibrated the perceptions of the human figure and materialised it as his iconic style. His painting, The Man From Bantul (The Final Round), was sold at US$296,800, setting a record for contemporary Southeast Asian art.

Lugas Syllabus

Surrealistic in a Dali-esque fashion, Lugas’ paintings and sculptures grasp at the viewers’ attention almost instantly once eyes are set upon his works. Pop culture and folklore references poke out from various sections of his paintings, prompting his audiences to draw parallels and reignite memories and experiences of days gone by. In essence, Lugas’ works address the ironies and contradictions in modern society, thus reopening up conversations that would often be pegged as the elephant in the room.

Soni Irawan

Multi-layered as his art and just as multi-talented, the founder of Jogjakarta experimental band Seek Six Sick has managed to amalgamate the vibrancy and energy of his music into his paintings. With his making of noise rock music as the backbone for his art, the musician cum painter embraces chaos as the core of his creative output. Soni’s jam sessions often involve him filling in the gaps within the existing sounds from his bandmates with his own, and he replicates this approach in his paintings too, making his pieces visual compositions of rock music.

Dedy Sufriadi

Post-Suharto art in Indonesia were often approached with realism, and it was an oversaturation of it that Dedy Sufriadi needed to find an outlet to paint his academic interest in Existentialism. Atop robust colours applied upon sizeable canvases are often scrawls of texts or evocative imageries characteristic of the Expressionism style, and it was in this style that Dedy opted to demonstrate the raw power of his artistic approach. Through this, he questions and re-presents the idea of life amidst the absurdities of living it out.

Browse his art on: @dedysufriadi

Justian Jafin

Collage-like but not, 34-year-old Justian Jafin’s pieces are layered with commentaries on present-day societal issues. Working with acrylics, his style of painting involves creating overlapping layers that cover and uncover the variety of subjects in the piece. This way, viewers will need to observe intently as a story unfolds before their eyes, bringing their focus to their roles in contributing to society and hopefully empower them to bring about change.

Browse his art on: @justianjafinw

Naufal Abshar

Laughter is the immediate byproduct of joy, but Naufal attempts to dissect the layers of the act in his works. In direct relation to his daily life, Naufal draws attention to usually mundane acts and bring them to attention. His interest in questioning the human condition further adds the depth in the conceptual aspects of his art, which complements with and contrasts against the whimsical imageries in the works.

Browse his art on: @naufalabshar

Anton Afganial

Intricately vibrant and chaotically controlled, Anton’s paintings are masses of clashes that spell out his Madurese background in which bold and vibratory colours are very much celebrated by his people. Perhaps the nuances may point to the works of batik paintings, but Anton reveals that that is mostly attributed to his employment of lines that were set to emphasise his shapes and forms in the paintings. Often moved by situations like human conflicts, love, balance, and cultural identity, Anton desires his artistic process to be as intuitive as it is spontaneous. His paintings are, in all, the embodiments of energy, enthusiasm, emotions, contradictions, and curiosity.

Browse his art on: @afganial_

Agus Saputra

The classical Batuan-style artworks originating from South Bali are often dense, dynamic, and detailed projections of legendary scenes or themes from daily lives. Agus adopts this feature within his modern-day rendition of the style to reinterpret traditions through his own lens. His compact landscape of elements that correspond and interact with one another creates a blend of narratives that unfold in different ways for every audience that stands before his art, ultimately making the story-telling process unique to each individual.

Browse his art on: @im.agusaputra

Iwan Suastika

In the eyes of Iwan Suastika, the concept is simple: I am the universe, You are the universe, and We are the universe. Iwan’s visual narratives are surrealistic scenes of humanoid beasts and pop culture references which are heavily imbued with symbols and metaphors. Each piece generates a conversation between the artist and his work, which is later conveyed to his viewers as cryptic messages to be deciphered. This is probably why Iwan stands out as an artistic enigmatologist who shows no end to the creation of his visual puzzles and storytelling prowess.

Browse his art on: @iwansuastika

Dodit Artawan

The conversation often goes like this, “No, they are not photos; yes, they are painted.” A doubletake is often required when glancing in the direction of Dodit’s artworks. Hyperrealistically rendered, Dodit’s Bikini-clad Barbie Dolls and alcohol bottles are direct criticisms of the consumer capitalism problem proliferating on the island of Bali where he resides. The lack of control on alcohol consumption further becomes a question of ethics when underaged teenagers have unimpeded access to purchase alcohols in stores, and he intends, through his art, to lift the carpet off this issue that has plagued the locals for decades now.

Browse his art on: @doditartawan

Nana Tedja

One of the most organically-inclined artists is Nana Tedja, one of Indonesia’s leading female artist who shows no fear in expressing herself within the male-dominated art scene. Bold, expressive, and unapologetically wild, Nana’s artistic approach breaks down the demarcations between herself and her art. True to herself in every sense, she has always intended her art to be an immediate reflection of her character and personality. Abstract expressionism may the style she has gone for, but Nana has reassuringly stated that the sole reason for her painting method was simply based off her preference and mood, and nothing more.

Browse her art on: @nana_tedja

Kencut

Putu Adi Suanjaya, or by his moniker of Kencut, conjures his iconic stuffed doll characters complete with bulging button eyes. The human eye is often known to be the window to the soul, since it easily divulges information, whether intentionally or otherwise, of the person and their emotional state. In his works, he opted to omit said windows and have them replaced with the unassumingly mundane buttons. Yet, the lack of an indication on the beings’ emotions also leaves no trace on the lies that they potentially bear, and it is in this ignorance of all things unsavoury that he creates a pocket of optimism for his audiences to dwell in; a place with no lies is indeed a happy place. His paintings serve as a reminder that life should be navigated through in as much positivity as a child who knows no sins.

Browse his art on: @suanjaya_kencut

Aurora Santika

Aurora’s works, with their flat colours and thick outlines, started out as a hobby, then a cry for help, and later a call for discussion. She used art as a vessel to deliver ideas that would effect action from people as she probes and pokes at issues within the socio-economic dynamic in society. These topics are generally difficult to bring up without adding fuel to the flame, but Aurora believes that art, regardless of medium, is the perfect instrument to initiate conversations on the subjects, especially those on humanity as a whole. Most issues addressed within Aurora’s art are inspired by real-life interactions with people who either act as the perpetrator in said issues, fall victim to them, or are fighting their hardest to eliminate them.

Browse her art on: @aurora_santika

Petek Sutrisno

Part of the young artist generation whose works are heavily influenced by comics, cartoons, illustrations, and pop culture, Petek Sutrisno deliberately incorporates his daily life into each piece of work to portray intended and relatable messages for which his audiences would be able to resonate with easily. Most of his work are visual translations of his childhood experience and current political issues. Flowers are a common sight in Petek’s paintings, and the artist explains that they relate to the elements of love, beauty, and peace, which he religiously incorporates into all of his art. In relevance to current affair, natural elements became a staple in his pieces as a reminder to all that environmental issues are still unresolved and it is everyone’s duty to preserve and not further damage nature and the environment.

Browse his art on: @peteksutrisno

Bahaudin

In some cultures, Bahaudin means “The magnificent of the Faith”. As a young man with a powerful name and an equally powerful set of skills, Bahaudin’s wide-eyed characters are heralds of peace and love. Child-like characters with recognisable superhero comical and cartoonish traits are often at the epicentre of his pieces as he advocates for an anti-conflict settlement of the world around him to hopefully work towards world peace. In an incredulous question posed by the artist, “Aren’t people already bored of disagreeing and spilling their blood on the earth we love?”

Browse his art on: @bahaudin__

Art thrives best in a land where the expression of creativity is unimpeded; as Indonesia entered its post-Suharto era, such the place it became where artistic thoughts, ideas and concepts are constantly taking shape and reshaping themselves in accordance with the shifting sands of modern political perspectives and evolution of traditions held firm.

Azimut-Benetti Group’s innovations include a 107m hybrid gigayacht, E-Mode propulsion, a displacement-to-planing hull and BCool engineering.

Luminosity, Benetti’s 107m hybrid gigayacht

Azimut-Benetti remains a world leader in luxury motor yacht production and heads the 2021 Global Order Book for 24m-plus yachts, the 21st successive year it has led the builder standings. Azimut itself builds from 34ft up to 125ft due to its new 38m Grande Trideck, while Benetti’s range of models extend from the Delfino 95 (29m) to over 350ft following the launch of three gigayachts, each 107m or 108m, in recent years.

The ‘biggest’ example of the Group’s eco-friendly efforts is Benetti’s 107.6m Luminosity, described as the largest hybrid yacht built to date. The generation/propulsion package features six generators of about 1,000kW each.

Luminosity has two Azipods with electric motors

The electricity produced by the generators is managed electronically by a fully integrated power management system to feed the consumption of the services on board and the electric motors of two Azipods of 2,200kW each. The spare electricity is also used to charge 36 tonnes of batteries which are sufficient to run the vessel for 12 hours without generator power, a huge convenience when at anchor with no shore power.

Benetti’s Technical Department worked on the state-of-the-art propulsion package with the likes of Caterpillar, Seastema and ABB. Another advantage of the system is silent, vibration-free navigation, meaning “guests sometimes fail to realise they’re underway”.

Benetti’s upcoming B.Yond 37M features E-Mode propulsion

Benetti’s new models in 2021 include the B.Yond 37M, the first in a new category of expedition yachts that features E-Mode propulsion architecture developed for the shipyard by Siemens.

Designed for long cruising with reduced environmental impact, the diesel-electric propulsion system operates in four different configurations: Enhanced Comfort, ideal for night and coastal cruising with no emissions; Eco Cruise or Hotel mode, for zero-emissions while cruising or at anchor; Extended Range, to reduce consumption on very long trips; and Eco Transfer, for navigation with only one engine driving both shafts to reduce engine hours and improve performance.

Azimut’s new Magellano 25 Metri features a ‘D2P’ hull

The Group’s eco-friendly design work includes the D2P® (Displacement to Planing) hull that features on Azimut’s new Magellano 25 Metri and the Grande Trideck, the company’s new 38m flagship. In collaboration with Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture, the Group’s studies of hull shapes led to the D2P® hull, which combines the advantages of a displacement hull with reduced fuel consumption at low speeds and in planing mode at higher speeds.

The new Magellano flagship is also the Group’s first model equipped with BCool engineering, a Marine Mechanical Ventilation System (MMVS) based on a NASA patent and originally developed for use on aerospace missions to sanitise the air on board. The system imitates and reproduces the process that takes place in nature, exploiting the combined action of the rays produced by a special UV lamp and a catalytic structure, without affecting the yacht’s power and consumption.

BCool engineering makes its yachting debut on the Magellano 25 Metri

Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, said: “Azimut-Benetti works to employ technology that strives for eco-friendliness and to improve the quality and comfort of the cruising experience. This commitment is appreciated by our yacht owners and industry professionals.”

The Group’s eco-friendly efforts are also reflected in its supply-chain control, the decision not to use any biocidal antifouling products, and the choice of sustainable materials with reduced ecological impact such as the foams developed by the Nanocore project, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified wood or synthetic and 100 per cent recyclable, environmentally friendly water and gelcoat glues.

Marco Valle: Pole Position

After well over two decades with Azimut Yachts, Marco Valle is settling into his new role as CEO of Azimut-Benetti Group, overseeing motor yacht models ranging from 34ft-354ft and a family-owned dynasty that has topped the Global Order Book for 21 straight years.

The MCY 70 Skylounge on the run along Hong Kong Island’s south side

Asia Yachting kicked off 2021 in lively fashion as the regional dealer hosted the Asian ‘reveal’ of the MCY 70 Skylounge online from Hong Kong and continued private viewings of the eye-catching new model.

Like all Monte Carlo Yachts models, the Skylounge Collection is designed by Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard of Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard. The duo’s principal remit was to create an elegant enclosed flybridge, a rare feature on Italian-built motor yachts of this size, and also use it to house the yacht’s sole helm station.

Last year, Skylounge versions were released for the MCY 70 and MCY 76, two of three models (along with the 66) introduced in 2019 as Monte Carlo Yachts unveiled its ‘second generation’ of yachts for its second decade.

Regional dealer Asia Yachting brought the MCY 70 Skylounge to Hong Kong

Initially targeted at the US market, the MCY 70 Skylounge debuted at the Miami Yacht Show last February before the first model in the region arrived in October in Hong Kong, where it’s expected to have a similar appeal in a climate featuring cool temperatures in winter and extreme humidity in the summer. And as usual, Asia Yachting has specified options and customisations to appeal to local tastes.

TOP FORM

The range name highlights the yacht’s most special feature – its fully enclosable and beautifully outfitted skylounge that occupies most of the flybridge.

The spacious skylounge includes huge side windows, a retractable skylight, the sole helm station, and stairs to the saloon on the main deck

MCY’s Skylounge Collection was conceived to provide a new concept for international markets, a yacht that can be enjoyed all year round, with an internal stairwell connecting main and upper-deck interiors that can be sealed and easily heated or cooled.

For the new hull tailored for Asia, the ‘Extra Tropical’ air-conditioning option was one of the boxes ticked by Olivier Besson, CEO and founder of Asia Yachting, which represents the boutique, high-end Italian builder in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.

The skylounge houses the yacht’s sole helm station

“This is one of the most important features that we know local owners appreciate,” he says. “Owners are keen to escape the high humidity we have in Hong Kong and in other parts of Asia. When you sit upstairs you feel as if you are inside, but because of the panoramic windows and the glass roof (a retractable skylight), you feel in touch with nature and the environment outside.

“When the yacht arrived, I was particularly impressed by the cosy feel of the intimate terrace at the back of the flybridge – great for two people or a couple to relax and have a private moment. It would be a good spot to enjoy a cigar.”

The aft deck of the flybridge is a cosy nook, like a balcony for the skylounge

The enclosed upper deck really does benefit from its surround glazing, whether seated on the long, roomy sofa or the lounging platforms either side of the leather central helm seat. The pilot has superb, uninterrupted visibility around the boat, and the control switches and screens are generously spaced – and why not? After all, this is the sole helm aboard, so freeing up more usable space below.

MAIN COURSE

The Skylounge line’s standard design allows indoor access between the flybridge and the main deck, although it can be customised like most other aspects of all MCY models. If desired, stairwell access can alternatively be positioned outside, from the cockpit.

Like so much of the interior and exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard, the spiral, reinforced glass inner stairwell is a talking-point feature that oozes both elegance and functionality – its transparency allows the perception of yet more space. But volume is not something the main saloon is short of, as there is no helm across this split-level area.

View of the main deck from the skylounge stairs

As such, Asia Yachting opted for a galley-up configuration to port of the upper level forward, facing the dining suite to starboard. This showpiece galley wants for nothing, with two sets of fridge-freezer

drawers, a cooking station, storage and dishwashing units that rival many high-end domestic kitchens.

“We took the galley-up option to make it a part of the décor and lifestyle for those aboard,” Besson says. “It’s a place where owners can chat to those on board easily, and people can stand around and share food and drinks in a relaxed, comfortable way.”

Next to the dining table is a thoughtfully-placed weather-tight door to the starboard side deck that leads to the bow or cockpit – handy for underway manoeuvres, carrying food or drink from the galley, or for simple access.

The large galley and dining area forward benefit from the absence of a lower helm station

A step down to the aft half of the saloon is a sitting area with a long, deep L-shaped sofa and armchairs covered with Hermès and Armani Casa fabrics, as is the case on seating throughout the boat. An oversized TV in the ceiling panelling can be lowered or concealed at the press of a remote-control button.

To port, just inside the cockpit doors, is a day head carefully concealed behind dark chocolate brown-coloured wooden louvred slats. This space can be alternatively configured as a storage room or for access below deck to crew quarters and storage for the water toys.

BACK AND FORTH

While the new Skylounge Collection focus may be on the interconnected indoor areas, the breezy, completely sheltered cockpit is another comfortable gathering or solo spot at a marine-teak dining table, with its elevated view out to sea over the swim platform at the stern.

The aft cockpit on the main deck

Shower facilities are concealed in cabinetry in one of the twin staircases that lead downward, while the rear platform provides access to the airy engine room, which also leads to the twin crew cabin that provides a buffer between the engines and master suite.

Up front, the large 124sqft (11.5sqm) foredeck is a signature MCY feature, an attractive, comfortable area distinguished by its central passageway. Lowered bulwarks allow great sea views from the sun pads, which are fitted with pop-up recliner back and head supports.

The yacht features a flexible foredeck

The semi-circular teak dining tables on each side are electrically adjustable and can be linked by an extension panel to create a substantial dining surface for up to 10 people. Asia Yachting opted for a bimini on the bow, which can be easily put up to offer shade to those on deck.

GET DOWN

A dedicated stairway at the aft of the saloon leads to the master suite via a corridor that’s also home to two washer-dryer machines on the lower deck. Light floods into the main bedroom area through the shipyard’s iconic and newly-enlarged overlapping circular windows, and the cabin makes full use of the midships beam of 17ft 10in (5.45m).

The master suite has private access and the shipyard’s iconic overlapping circular windows

The stateroom is comfortably and functionally self-contained, with walk-in wardrobe, large marble-clad modern bathroom, storage cabinets, dressing table-cum-desk and a sofa.

The guest cabins have separate access via another walkway from the forward end of the saloon. Two compact twin cabins feature berths that can be joined to make a double bed. The port twin has ensuite access to a bathroom, while the starboard version uses the same but with corridor access.

The VIP cabin is in the bow, forward of two convertible twin guest cabins

A VIP ensuite cabin at the bow has decent natural light from panel windows and plenty of hanging and storage space. Like everywhere else on board – including the engine room – headroom is notably generous.

Since Asia Yachting started staging private viewings of the new model, Besson says visitors “appreciated the new interior design that we made luxurious and bright, plus they liked the additional living space upstairs, which matches their needs for shelter and cool temperatures”.

Asia’s first MCY 70 Skylounge relaxes on the south of Hong Kong Island

Following the global launch of the MCY 70 Skylounge last February, the MCY 76 Skylounge made its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, with the yard indicating that an even bigger version is to follow.

Angelo Gobbi on Absolute’s spirit of innovation

Absolute President Angelo Gobbi explains why the Italian builder is inspired by the need to keep improving its boats along with its in-house design and production systems.

Absolute’s Asian dealers include Hong Kong-based Absolute Marine

Every creative process is driven by an inspiration of some sort. For Absolute Yachts’ designers, there exists just one well from which our work springs from – innovation.

The company’s business model requires the entire lifecycle of our products to be controlled by our own hands. This is rather unusual for the pleasure boat industry, where a handful of renowned naval architects dominate the mainstream creation of new yachts.

In Piacenza, an inland city in Italy’s northwest, my colleagues and I walk a different path, where consistency and independence motivate us more than anything else. It has worked, since this approach has rewarded Absolute with two-digit percentage growth throughout the last decade.

Gobbi has been President of Absolute since 2008, having founded Cantieri Nautici Gobbi in the 1960s

Sergio Maggi and myself lead the R&D team, which includes not only skills of genuine Italian style and décor but also deep knowledge of advanced engineering and lean manufacturing processes. Yet the leitmotiv Absolute has expressed since its birth in 2002 is innovation, as shown by recent developments.

At the Boat Builder Awards during METS 2018, our exclusive Integrated Structural System (ISS) won the ‘Innovation in a Production Process’ category. ISS is an effective, efficient method for creating the lightweight, robust, vibration-free, modular, scalable and serviceable structural body of our Navetta and Fly series of yachts.

The trick is as easy as only truly gifted ideas can be. At the early stage of manufacturing, the hull and deck are laminated in their own moulds, while an advanced 3D CNC machine prepares the components for the multiaxial internal grid.

Absolute’s new models included the Generation 2021 version of the 50 Fly

Once the latter is fully assembled and stiffened by structural bonding, it is inserted into the hull, where it is coupled to the stringers with millimetric precision. Then the deck is put on top, again with high-precision coupling with the structural grid, and eventually all these three pieces are sealed to one another.

The result delivers a lightweight body with all the benefits listed previously. Also, the internal grid deploys all the expected features – tongue-and-groove, holes, tracks and more – to host all the components of on-board systems such as pipes, hoses, electric junction boxes, lamps and so on, thus bringing a highly industrialised quality.

Another impressive feature is that hull number one of each new model is fully engineered before laying the first gelcoat surface on the moulds. No kind of improvisation is expected nor needed. Our technical office develops detailed handbooks for all the workshops and manufacturing departments during the early stages of design.

Absolute’s new Navetta 64 features the iconic beach club cabin

This is almost impossible when an outsourced, third-party designer drives the main development. It becomes totally unfeasible when one external consultant moves independently on external skins and layouts, and another on internal systems and arrangements. That’s why Absolute keeps full control of the products’ definition, concept design, engineering and manufacturing, under their own watch.

This also allows the company to have an incomparably short time to market. From the first pencil sketches to hull one hitting the water, Absolute spends no more than 12 months on units, even as large as 73ft. It also enables an impressive number of new products to appear each season, with no less than 28 truly new models hitting the marketplace in the past nine years.

Furthermore, during the next lifecycle of every product – essentially the season after its launch – Absolute has shown itself to be reactive by anticipating the new trends and adapting the existing products to new components, technologies and materials that become available.

The beach club sofa can be converted into a double bed

In one year, no less than 1,000 ‘minor’ improvements were made to existing models, with in-house product management allowing yachts to always reflect the most up-to-date innovations available.

ISS delivers not only the technical qualities mentioned above but also allows daring design choices not viable otherwise, such as awesome master cabins in the bow and full-beam VIP cabins midships, where you’ll find the master cabin on most other vessels.

It also enables large windows and windscreens for the main deck, the largest flybridges for yachts of their size, extensive use of sliding doors for the lower-deck accommodation, full-size square or rectangular king and queen-size beds in every cabin, and many other rare features.

Late last year, we launched the game-changing Navetta 64 featuring an aft beach club that converts into the fourth ensuite stateroom. This year, new models will include the 60 Fly and the 48 Coupé, the first model in our new range featuring solar power. To cut a long story short, for Absolute, innovation really is of the essence.

Absolute Navetta 64: Marrying rational and romantic

Scheduled to debut in Asia in 2021, Absolute’s new Navetta 64 has the clean, vertical exterior lines that characterise this distinctive range. However, on a design where logic and intelligence rule, a poetic touch shows that even the most rational of us appreciate the romance of life at sea.

The SeaXplorer 58 is the third model from Damen Yachting’s expedition series

Following the 62m Anawa and 77m La Datcha delivered in 2020, Damen Yachting has revealed details of the third SeaXplorer, a 58m custom build due for delivery to her owner in 2022. The shipyard has described the new 1,090GT SeaXplorer as “the perfect expedition yacht for the owner’s lifestyle of adventurous globe-trotting exploration with family and friends”.

The exterior is by Azure Yacht Design, the Dutch design and naval architecture studio behind all the SeaXplorer designs, while the range has also benefited from design partner EYOS Expeditions and their operational design input gained from experience in the field. The interior is by Design Unlimited, the owner’s chosen interior architect.

The covered area under the helideck is a standout social zone

The SeaXplorer 58 will be the fifth Damen Yachting delivery from the builder’s Antalya facility in Turkey. By starting the hull construction upfront, the Dutch-owned shipyard was able to offer the experienced owner a customisable platform with delivery in less than two years.

The model features the SeaXplorer’s signature bow point observation lounge, while the upper deck has an open sky lounge and dining with concertina-opening glass partitions to the jacuzzi. One of the standout areas is under the aft helideck, where a luxury cabana-style outdoor lounge includes a bar, folding balconies and an infinity-edged pool.

“With fresh breezes and shaded ocean vistas, the whole aft of the yacht will be a beautiful and inspiring space to experience the world,” said Enrique Tintore, Damen Yachting’s SeaXplorer Design Manager.

The SeaXplorer 58 features an Ice Class hull and certified helideck

There’s accommodation for 12 guests in six suites, while a crew of 15 will run the yacht with extra accommodation for two expedition staff. The yacht will carry a custom 11.4m performance sailboat, two large multi-role tenders and a wide range of toys, with the ability to carry road and off-road vehicles and motorcycles.

The SeaXplorer 58 features an Ice Class hull for safe operations in polar waters, plus sustainable and low-maintenance options including a premium synthetic teak deck. The yacht has oceangoing autonomy for up to 30 days without port call due to chilled garbage stores and waste-water tanks for sustainable operations in zero-discharge zones of natural beauty.
