Two arrivals at Australia’s largest custom builder, Echo Yachts, indicate big boats are still on the move between Asia and Indian Ocean ports. By Bruce Maxwell.

A recent visitor to the Australian Marine Complex at Henderson, south of Perth, where Echo Yachts is located, is the 56m Picchiotti motor yacht Galileo G, which has voyaged slowly from Singapore via Sutera Harbour in Kota Kinabalu on the North Borneo Coast, then down the Makassar Strait to Bali.

Exuma and Galileo G were the first two Vitruvius-design new breed explorers and they created quite a stir when launched in Italy a decade ago. Galileo G’s first owner ordered interiors by Umberto Fossati and had a separate interest in the 52m super sailboat Red Dragon built by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand.

The present Hong Kong owner has brought Galileo G in for scheduled survey, refit and repair work. The Australian Marine Complex has a large floating dock that is available on a common user basis for several yards in the vicinity.

Echo Yachts Sales and Marketing Manager Chris Blackwell says this facility has allowed them to bid successfully for refits on several other superyachts in the financial year ahead. The Australian dollar, currently worth 73 US cents and falling, is helping competitive quotes too.

Prior to Galileo G, the award-winning 84m diesel-electric trimaran White Rabbit G turned up at Echo Yachts, also from Singapore, for regular maintenance at the yard where she was built. Pandemic rules for superyachts in Singapore have been quite strict and on arrival in Western Australia, crew must quarantine for another two weeks, but that is a small price to pay for the relative freedom ashore that then ensues.

Echo Yachts presently has a 56m LOA Yacht Support Vessel under construction for an Asian client. Its length includes a 6m aft platform required for water sports launch and retrieval activities. The catamaran is somewhat similar in design to 52m Charley, which has a 4m transom, and was built as a Yacht Support for White Rabbit G. She made her debut at Singapore Yacht Show. Charley was built in FRP composites, whereas the new build, like WR G, is in aluminium.

Naval architecture is by Australian firm One2Three, a regular partner, and Echo Yachts owner and director Mark Stothard again underlines his faith in these big custom-designed multihulls for their increased fuel efficiency, extended range, gentler performance in a seaway, and ability to undertake stand-alone adventure cruising. White Rabbit was delivered in 2018, but anyone ordering a similar vessel in 2021 can still achieve significant economies of scale.

Among world premieres at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, the 62Steel is Sanlorenzo’s second-biggest model, distinguished by an aft infinity pool, three-sided beach club and a stunning owner’s deck with an expansive bedroom facing a private pool and sunbathing area. By Clare Mahon.

The numbers are impressive: 61.5m LOA, 11.8m beam, 1,300GT volume and five decks if you count the tank deck. Cabins for 12 guests and accommodation for a generously sized crew of 13 or 14. That all adds up to plenty of space to give Cloud 9, the first Sanlorenzo 62Steel, real nirvana potential.

The exterior lines were designed by Sanlorenzo’s technical and style departments. With long, continuous panes of dark glass that contrast elegantly with the white steel hull, the yacht is slender and elegant with a hard chine at the bow to deflect water from the foredeck.

Open aft decks include the beach club, main-deck pool, owner’s deck and bridge deck

Boarding Cloud 9 feels like walking into a garden on a sunny day. The spaces are vast, open and welcoming. On the main deck, an infinity pool with large lateral sun pads beckons and after a dip you could sit under the cabana, shaded by linen curtains that sway in the breeze.

The indoor and outdoor spaces are so well integrated you almost don’t realise that what looks like a cabana is partly the main deck’s aft cockpit and partly the entrance to the main saloon, in this case set up with a long dining table so guests can enjoy the breeze and a meal at the same time.

The swimming pool on the aft main deck has an infinity view and a glass bottom

Symmetrical staircases lead down from the sun pads to the beach club. Sometimes beach clubs can feel like an afterthought, enjoyable once you get to them, but a bit cut off from the rest of the yacht. Not so aboard Cloud 9, where the stern sections of the lower and main decks are connected both physically and visually, so they feel like one continuous space.

Even the bottom of the pool on the main deck is glass, so it acts as a skylight and gives the beach club beneath it a kind of under-the-sea sensation. As if that wasn’t enough, this already large yacht has a transom and side platforms that open to add an extra 40sqm of space on the water. There’s room for a crowd.

The beach club includes waterside balconies (above) and a hammam (below)

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

And this beach club doesn’t have to do double duty as a tender garage because there are symmetrical garages midships with their own side-opening hull doors that house a 9m tender, a service tender and toys such as jetskis. With a bar, fitness equipment and a hammam, this beach club is close to sybaritic perfection.

ENTERING A NEW WORLD

Back on the main deck, the dining area at the entrance is subtly divided from the rest of the saloon by a glass wall embedded with a unique metal mesh to give it visual appeal. Silvery grey surfaces shimmer while the colour palette is neutral and never jarring, played out in luxurious natural materials like grey oak, macassar ebony and pale Jerusalem limestone.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The interior is by Francesco Paszkowski in collaboration with Margherita Casprini

“Creating the interior design was an exciting process,” says Francesco Paszkowski whose studio penned the interiors in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. “Our long-standing collaboration with Sanlorenzo allowed us to create interiors with a distinctly contemporary feel.”

While many pieces of loose furniture are by top Italian furniture manufacturers such as Minotti, other pieces were made to measure by the specialised artisans at Yachtline. The designers also created niches and shelves for displaying artwork and other collections.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The formal dining area is forward of the saloon on the main deck

Proceeding fore on the main deck past the comfortable main living area, you arrive at the lobby where a staircase winds around an elevator that leads to all five decks.

Fore on the main deck are six en-suite guest cabins, one of which can do double duty as a massage room. All the guest cabins are fitted with soft and luxurious materials and have carefully crafted details such headboards in suede and walls covered in silk velvet.

OWNER’S PARADISE

Everybody is well provided for aboard Cloud 9, but the owners are even more so. A generous half of the upper deck, over 200sqm, is for the couple’s private suite. The apartment starts with a large living area followed by a study.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The interior of the owner’s deck includes a private lounge

The original owners (the boat has since been listed for sale) tailored the layout to meet their different needs: she chose to have a proper dressing room and a bathtub in her large bathroom. He chose a more conventional closet and was happy with a smaller bathroom with just a shower.

While a couple can go their own separate ways getting dressed and ready, they converge again in the cabin area proper where a centrally placed bed is backed by a glass partition wall.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The stunning master suite forward benefits from a large skylight

The full-beam sleeping area is lit by a large skylight over the bed and looks out over the vast and open foredeck. The highlight of the stunning forward view is a glass-backed counter current pool that nipped a bit of headroom from some of the guest cabins below but allows the owners to have a swim at their own leisure and in complete privacy.

Thanks to a telescopic mast that disappears when not in use, the 140sqm foredeck is so completely open and unencumbered you could use it as a putting green.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The master suite has a welcoming view of the private foredeck

Aft on the upper deck is a cosy home cinema and game room and a large outdoor dining area with a bar. The yacht is ideal for warmer climates as the overall design prioritises outdoor deck spaces over larger indoor areas.

The aft section of the bridge deck can be set up for sunbathing and dining. Proceeding fore, the captain’s cabin is right by the bridge where the yacht is controlled via a Team Italia integrated I-Bridge.

Sanlorenzo, 62Steel, Yacht, Superyacht, Cloud 9, Monaco Yacht Show, Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini

The owner’s deck offers alfresco dining aft and there’s a similar area on the bridge deck above

With touchscreens that manage all nav-com equipment on board, this system can be modified to meet different yachts’ customisation requirements. In fact, the bridge aboard Cloud 9 was purpose developed to respond to the yacht’s ergonomics and technical space.

While the captain’s cabin is on the bridge deck, the rest of the crew have their quarters, mess and galley on the lower deck. All crew pathways including staircases are kept separate from guest areas to protect privacy on a model that shows what it’s like to live on Cloud 9.

Ahead of the Dakar Rally, Audi Sport has put its Audi RS Q e-tron through its paces in the deserts of Morocco.

With its three driver crews, Audi pushed the car to its extremes to test its capabilities. Sven Quandt, team principal of Q Motorsport said that at times, the temperatures soared to over 40 degrees Celsius, which brought some new issues to light. He also said that sandstorms hampered the tests.

Andreas Roos, who oversees factory motorsport projects at Audi Sport, added that the team expects lower temperatures at the Dakar Rally. “Nevertheless, we deliberately went to Morocco to test our concept under the most extreme conditions,” he said. “Components for the MGU, for example, were basically not developed for use in high ambient temperatures, but the drivetrain and other components were also pushed to their limits, or even beyond the heat.”

Dakar Test Morocco

He also said the insights gained in Morocco were “invaluable” but admitted there was still a lot to do before the Dakar Rally, and there’s not much time left.

On the driver side of things, one of Audi’s main objectives in Morocco was to test a new cockpit configuration. The new modification was meant to provide the driver and co-driver with more space in the tight cockpit so the team can perform and communicate more effectively. In this regard, Roos shared that feedback was “positive”.

Audi Sports driver teams are as follows: Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist (Sweden), Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger (France) and Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (Spain). Peterhansel is regarded as the most successful Dakar driver of all time, with the record for the most wins (14) at the rally. Sainz, the father of F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr, has won the Dakar Rally three times (2010, 2018, 2020).

The 2022 Dakar Rally is a 12-stage event that will take place from 2-14 January 2022. It will take place in Saudi Arabia, starting in Ha’il and ending in Jeddah — going through canyons, cliffs, coastline, and stretches of dunes. This will be the third time the event has been hosted in Saudi Arabia.

Monaco Yacht Show returns to centre stage

The world’s premier superyacht show is back at Port Hercules with new features and attractions for visitors. By Bruce Maxwell.

Monaco Yacht Show, 2021

The Monaco Yacht Show runs from September 22-25

A new-look Monaco Yacht Show makes its welcome return from September 22-25 after a two-year hiatus caused by Covid. Three hundred exhibitors and about 100 superyachts on display should ensure that this most exclusive event continues at the pinnacle of private yachting’s sales calendar.

Caution remains the keynote, however, and some owners clearly had second thoughts about allowing their vessels to be displayed. This resulted in some last-minute changes, but final adjustments take place at every boat show, and the overall message is that Monaco is back with a bang.

The superyacht industry, which traditionally takes stock at this time, has had a very impressive last year, as wealthy individuals across the world decide to invest in their own floating resorts. The attractions in owning such vessels, capable of getting away from it all, “far from the madding crowd”, have never been more evident, and order books are filling fast.

Monaco Yacht Show, 2021

Builder bases in the pavilions provide links to vessels displayed outside

This development will be reviewed pre-MYS in a Monaco Yacht Summit on September 21 at the Yacht Club de Monaco, supported by JP Morgan Private Bank, Monaco Economic Board and the Monaco Convention Bureau.

High-quality speakers for the Business Report, which looks at trends and other aspects of chartering, buying, building and operating a superyacht, include Jonathan Beckett, CEO of brokers Burgess, Michael Breman, Sales Director of German yard Lürssen, which has eight new build and refit facilities, Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting and Amels, and Aino-Leena Grapin, CEO of Winch Design.

Charlie Birkett, CEO and founder of Y.CO, is speaking on the charter market, and Benetti is among those addressing how to commission a new build, as is Oceanco.

Monaco Yacht Show, 2021

Damen Yachting’s Time Off

MYS, owned by British shows and exhibitions conglomerate Informa, has refined a Dockside exhibition area this year featuring companies involved in the construction and management of superyachts, which is only accessible to visitors holding ‘Discover’, ‘Advise’ and ‘Sapphire’ badges on the opening Wednesday, September 22.

On Quai L’Hirondelle, a focus is now on super sailboats, as well as their shipyards, designers and specialist equipment suppliers such as sails, spars and deck hardware. This sounds logical, but some clients are interested in both sail and motor yachts, and separating them may be a challenge in practice. The demise in recent years of New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts and now Perini Navi in Italy has also put pressure on this sector, while opening opportunities for others.

Another innovation is that the Designer Gallery has been enhanced by addition of a Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, where designers can interact with potential clients and present some of their copious design ideas. We asked designers Espen Øino and Sam Sorgiovanni, separately, what they thought of this development, and both were very positive.

Monaco Yacht Show, 2021

The new Yacht Design and Innovation Hub allows designers to showcase their ideas; this is the Frontier concept by Sam Sorgiovanni

Other complementary sectors include Tenders and Toys on Quai Antoine, luxury cars on the car deck, luxury products as usual in the Parvis Piscine pavilion, and nautical gear and latest tech releases on Darse Sud and Quai Albert.

Among more general comments, Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut-Benetti, said: “Monaco Yacht Show is for sure one of the key events for super yachting, and we are really happy to introduce some of our new models after a very satisfactory sales season, probably one of the best of the last 10 years.”

Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess, also traditionally on Quai L’Hirondelle: “We have followed the evolution of MYS over three decades, and support the organisers’ new approaches to upgrading

visitor experiences. We will bring a high-quality selection of our listed yachts.”

Michael Breman, Sales Director Lürssen: “We are happy to be back at the boat show. We are hopeful that the revamped show concept is a success, and that we will have the opportunity to engage with many new build customers.”

Monaco Yacht Show, 2021

Feadship’s 94m Viva has a remarkable design-to-delivery story

Farouk Nefzi, Marketing Director of Feadship: “We were involved in discussions with Informa to deliver an event that will enhance the journey of visiting superyacht customers. This September show promises to be a top-notch lifestyle event.”

Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of MYS: “Rest assured that MYS 2021 will be covid-safe. An anti-covid sanitary protocol will be respected throughout the entire show, from the first day of preparations to the dismantling of the last stand and, of course, during the four days of the show.”

Builders taking part include Ab Yachts, Abeking & Rasmussen, Alia, Arcadia, Azimut, Baglietto, Baltic, Benetti, Bilgin, Columbus, Conrad, CRN, Damen, Delta, Extra, Feadship, Ferretti, Fincantieri, Gulf Craft, Heesen, Icon, ISA, JFA, Kusch, Latitude, Lloyd Werft, Lürssen, Maiora, Mangusta, Mondomarine, Nautor’s Swan, Nobiskrug, Ocea, Oceanco, Rossinavi, Royal Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, Sanlorenzo, SES, Silver, Sunreef, Southern Wind, Tankoa, Turquoise, Vitters, Wally and Westport.

The yard is also producing 35m Silver Yachts SpaceCats at Jiangmen in the Pearl River Delta. These and the explorers, and earlier Silver Yachts motor yachts of 73 and 77m, are designed by Espen Øino as fast but economic world cruising vessels.

Feadship’s 94m Viva, if she makes it, has advanced hybrid propulsion to lower her carbon footprint, and Burgess may also show the 85m Victorious built by AKyacht. Exterior design is by Michael Leach, and interiors by H2.

Ferretti Yachts’ epic new flagship

Ferretti Yachts’ epic new flagship

Cover star of Issue 61, Ferretti Yachts’ new five-cabin flagship 1000 features a remarkable flow between its outdoor areas from beach club to flybridge to foredeck, while IdeaeItalia’s interiors focus on natural light, colour and great views. And keep an eye out, as the first hull in Asia will arrive early next year. By Clare Mahon.

Ferretti Yachts, 1000, motor yacht, Venice Boat Show, Cannes Yachting Festival, IdeaeItalia, Filippo Salvetti, Taiwan, Asia

The Ferretti Yachts 1000 debuted at Venice before showing at Cannes

Ferretti Yachts’ new flagship is about much more than just building a bigger boat. In developing the Ferretti Yachts 1000, the Italian shipyard did a complete re-think on spaces, connections and ideal uses.

The brief was for a 30m yacht, large enough to offer a luxurious living experience yet not so large that size would become a limitation. Design had to be versatile and with the qualities that would meet the needs of a variety of markets. Selling points were to be privacy, easy access to outdoor areas and functional beach-to-fly connections.

And while much anticipation surrounded the model’s Cannes Yachting Festival appearance this September, I was able to see the first hull in all her glory at this year’s Venice Boat Show, where she drew a crowd as she made her official world premiere.

Filippo Salvetti designed the exterior

Due to the buzz the launch generated – and the subsequent line of eagerly waiting people – I had some time to check out the exterior lines penned by Filippo Salvetti that complement his work on the brand’s 670, 720 and 500 models launched in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively.

And the lines on the 1000 are as simple as black and white. Long, continuous, horizontal lines of black glass contrast with the white hull and end in curves that pick up the bow shape. The semi-wide body construction makes her look like a compact unit with a very high freeboard.

Birds’ eye view shows the flow from cockpit to fly to foredeck

The bridge is just a low wedge whose roof also acts as side coamings for the fly, an arrangement that integrates the upper deck into the yacht’s lines, so avoiding that ‘extra piece on top’ effect.

UPWARDS AND ONWARDS

Boarding aft, the first thing you notice is a row of loungers built into the transom facing the water. Centrally placed between symmetrical stairs that lead up to the aft cockpit, the effect is a bit like an amphitheatre overlooking the hydraulically operated up/down aft platform.

Ferretti Yachts, 1000, motor yacht, Venice Boat Show, Cannes Yachting Festival, IdeaeItalia, Filippo Salvetti, Taiwan, Asia

The infinite-view cockpit overlooks a huge swim platform with a row of sun loungers

Add that the loungers can be shaded by an awning and you get a take on the beach club that creates an open and breezy space where you really can enjoy a day in and on the water. Another thing you notice is that the Ferretti Yachts 1000 blends spaces that on many other yachts are separate and distinct.

The aft cockpit has a glass enclosure aft, so is in direct visual connection with the beach platform. While the cockpit is fully shaded by the overhang, its seating faces sideways instead of forward, so guests look over the water and not into the yacht. There’s even a large glass insert in the fashion plates to keep the views open.

The cockpit has a flexible table and facing sofas

While on many yachts the natural progression of spaces seems to be from the aft cockpit into the saloon, two symmetrical staircases invite you directly up to the fly deck where a large and open aft area can be furnished to the owner’s taste.

The hardtop and parts of its structure are in weight-saving carbon-fibre, a first for Ferretti, and the bar and dining area under it can be shaded to a varying degree by opening and closing slats in the hardtop.

The hardtop covers a dining table, bar and helm, while the aft flybridge is free to furnish

The teak flooring continues in a curve up to the upper helm station, a nice touch that shows the quality of the workmanship aboard.

Due to the semi wide-body design, the interiors are built all the way out to the hull sides for about half of the yacht’s length. There is no side passage from the main deck to foredeck, but that doesn’t mean the area is difficult to reach. In fact, you can walk the entire length of the yacht from the beach platform to flybridge to foredeck in a continuous line and always stay outdoors.

The multi-level foredeck can be covered by a bimini

All deck spaces flow easily one to the other. Passage to the foredeck is via symmetrical side passages from the fly that converge by a large sun pad in front of the bridge and then continue down to a C-shaped seating area. The foredeck is another large outdoor area that can be enjoyed all day.

KEEP IT LIGHT

Outdoor deck spaces are key, but indoor spaces are just as important. The interiors are available in two different moods created by IdeaeItalia, the design studio that first worked with Ferretti Yachts on its entry-level 500 released last year.

Aft view of the saloon, which benefits from the cockpit’s infinity view

The Classic mood is based around a palette of warm, neutral tones, Contemporary is brighter and more colourful, while both feature tasteful Minotti furniture.

The saloon is on the same level as the aft cockpit and is set up with large living and dining areas. A sectional sofa in the living area faces a freestanding flat screen TV and is separated from the dining area by a built-in sideboard.

The saloon offers great views; sliding doors are an option beside the dining table

Elegant as the furnishings may be, the real star of the show are the yacht’s surroundings, with views enjoyed through long, uninterrupted panes of glass. Owners can choose to have sliding doors installed by the dining table for an even closer connection to the outdoors.

Fore of the dining area, the yacht becomes wide body with the owner’s suite, which is situated fore on the main deck and is even wider than the saloon. With ample storage spaces, a study and a settee, this is a real suite with a centrally placed bed and a full-beam bathroom just two steps down from the sleeping area.

The master suite is wider than the saloon and has a full-beam bathroom

The bathroom has double sinks in marble and separate shower and toilet areas, while there are opening portholes in the long windows for natural air circulation. The lower deck features four guest cabins, all en-suite and all luxuriously appointed.

The crew area has accommodation for four plus the captain, so assuring everyone on board lives well. All crew pathways are to starboard so guests can enjoy their privacy, but both crew and guests have access to the beating heart of the yacht: the bridge. As well as a Poltrona Frau helm seat, a seating area allows guests to watch the operations of the boat via its Naviop-Simrad touchscreens.

The lower-deck hallway leads to two guest cabins forward and two aft

Top speeds of 24 or 28 knots are possible depending on the engine option, while other options include a gyroscopic stabilising system.

If we take our yacht tour full circle and head back to the aft platform, we see that the transom door flips up to reveal a garage large enough for a Williams Dieseljet 445 tender, jet-ski and Seabobs. When all of these are in the water, the garage becomes a beach club, but there are so many ways to enjoy this yacht that you might not even need it.

While Ferretti Yachts’ new flagship has been a star at shows from Venice to Cannes and the Ferretti Group Private Preview in Monaco, it will also be seen in Asia soon, with the region’s first hull due to arrive in Taiwan in early 2022.

TC Wong made global headlines when the rapid spread of Covid left him stranded at sea in his Leopard 50 for months until he was eventually allowed into Fiji, where he has remained since. Now, the Singaporean is waiting for borders to open so he can continue his journey around the South Pacific on his beloved Ximula III.

Wong Tet Choong, better known as ‘TC’, became one of Singapore’s most famous sailors last year. Having explored much of Southeast Asia in the past decade, he set off in early February 2020 for his biggest trip yet, sailing his Leopard 50 Ximula III through Indonesia on his way to the South Pacific.

However, as Covid rapidly spread around the world, borders quickly closed around him. His family back in Singapore were among those worried about him alone at sea, with nowhere to berth. Turned away in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu – where he was able to buy and receive fuel and food from a distance – he was eventually allowed into Fiji in late April.

The episode generated news in Fiji, Singapore, Australia and elsewhere, even making international headlines through the likes of the BBC and The Guardian. However, if his situation seemed dramatic then, Wong couldn’t be more relaxed now.

Living on his Leopard, often at Port Denarau Marina, he has been away from his family in Singapore for over 20 months and appears in no rush to return home.

“I’ve been sailing around the islands in Fiji and I video call my family almost every day. There are so many beautiful islands to explore here,” says Wong, who had been in the country for just over a year when he turned 60 this May.

“Once the borders reopen, I’ll resume my journey towards Tahiti, visiting as many islands and atolls as I can. I believe this will take two to three more years. I’ve received many messages and well wishes from people telling me they’d love to embark on a similar lifestyle. Actually, there are many people already living the life I do.”

THE CALL OF THE SEA

Wong began boating three decades ago, picking up a small second-hand powerboat in 1992. At the same time, he picked up an interest in sailing and rented boats to cruise around Singapore with the staff of his company, Zhaplin Work.

“That was when I started to learn more about the boating lifestyle and community,” recalls Wong, who also enjoys rock and mountain climbing. “When I was sailing, I really enjoyed being able to play with the elements, harnessing the power of the wind and adapting as it changes.”

Still, his next purchase was another powerboat, a 34ft Riviera he had from 1996-97 when he often cruised south to the nearby Indonesian island of Batam with his young family. However, as money was tight, he was unable to sustain upkeep of the boat and had to let it go, vowing to return to sea when his finances were more stable.

“When I sold off the Riviera, I promised myself I’d get a sailing boat once I had the money and time. I wanted to sail further, as there were so many beautiful islands I wanted to visit and explore.”

Wong owned a couple of powerboats

Wong’s company started to grow on the back of the innovative Ximula wardrobe system, an award-winning product still used throughout condominiums and other residences today. In 2013, after almost two decades of “working hard and saving up”, he was able to buy his first sailing catamaran, Ximula, a Lagoon 400 S2.

Wong used the boat regularly, sailing almost every week during the first year with family, friends or staff – “whoever was available and keen”. He typically sailed in Singapore and Indonesia, although early trips included a one-month expedition from Singapore to Phuket with his family.

He also joined several convoy trips organised by Nongsa Point Marina, where he learned from other sailors about Indonesia’s waters. Trips opened his eyes to the amazing islands around Singapore including the Anambas to the northeast and Tambelan and Badas to the east, off the west coast of Borneo.

“We discovered so many amazing islands in Indonesia. They’re so beautiful and the islanders were very welcoming towards us, so after these trips, I revisited these places to explore them at my own time and pace. I sailed everywhere around Southeast Asia.”

In 2014, Wong started a charter business, Ximula Sail, skippering and taking care of the yacht as his daughter Minqi ran the business and worked as crew during trips. When possible, the family still used the boat for personal trips including taking two months off in 2016 to sail to Koh Samui together with Darren Lim and his family, who were then living aboard Gracefully, Ximula’s sister boat.

As Wong wanted more time to explore the region, he stopped skippering Ximula and Lim joined forces with Ximula Sail, which now has two catamarans and 10 staff, and is among Singapore’s most respected charter companies.

LEAPING TO LEOPARD

With Ximula occupied by charter business, Wong briefly owned a Beneteau monohull in 2017, frequently sailing to Phuket with his staff and participating in regattas. However, it was only a stop-gap measure as he resumed his search for a catamaran, a design he liked because of the comfort and space but also because the saloon and galley are much higher above the water than on a monohull.

“My wife gets seasick easily, so this allows us to have a view of the horizon even while we’re indoors, relaxing or preparing meals. I only sail for leisure from island to island, and don’t intend to cross long distances across oceans, so I prefer a catamaran for comfort compared to a monohull for performance.”

Wong’s search ended when he met Kit Chotithamaporn, Leopard’s Yacht Sales Manager – Asia, at the Singapore Yacht Show in 2017. Wong originally showed interest in the Leopard 48 on display, but when he visited Kit again on the last day, he found out it had been sold just hours earlier. Kit then informed Wong about the new Leopard 50 and Wong ordered a unit that arrived the following year, which he named Ximula III.

“I really like the layout and design of the Leopard 50. Firstly, I love the door at the front which enables me to easily access the foredeck from the saloon and allows smooth airflow through the interior. The forward cockpit is a nice area to chill at while we’re at anchor, as it faces the breeze and is sheltered from the sun,” Wong says.

“Secondly, the galley and furniture are forward-facing, which is especially important for me when I sail alone for long distances, as I can keep a lookout while preparing my meals. The panoramic view also helps reduce my wife’s seasickness.

“Thirdly, I like the helm at the side so I can have visibility of both the flybridge and the aft cockpit and saloon. It also makes berthing much easier for me, as I can have a clear view of the berth without running between port and starboard.”

Wong sailed his Leopard 50 up and down both the west and east coast of Peninsular Malaysia during multiple trips to both Phuket in the Andaman Sea and Krabi in the Gulf of Thailand, spending between one and three months there each time and exploring the area.

He also revisited his favourite cruising grounds in Indonesia while becoming increasingly attracted to exploring remote areas and engaging with people not typically used to visitors.

“My favourite part about sailing is the opportunity to visit remote islands not normally accessible by plane or other forms of transport. I’ve learnt a lot about life through the eyes of islanders, who always show us amazing hospitality. Some even brought us on a tour around their islands or invited us to their homes and treated us to delicacies like freshly caught lobsters,” he says.

Wong has become an experienced all-weather sailor

“I used to think about what I can give back as a gift of appreciation for their warm welcome but learnt that material items were not meaningful to them since they lived very simply. Eventually, I decided to bring along an instant printer on board so I could take and print photos of them so they could keep them as memories. I felt this was more meaningful.”

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS

Having visited much of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, Wong started to expand his horizons. “I realised I still had so many more destinations I wished to explore so started to set my sights on the South Pacific, which I’d heard so much about.”

Wong painstakingly planned and mapped out a three-year journey that would take in Tahiti and other islands in French Polynesia, researching online and consulting friends who had sailed in the area. Finally, on February 2, 2020, he embarked on his journey from Singapore with two friends, although he was soon sailing alone after they disembarked in Indonesia at the end of the month.

Wong can live for months alone at sea

“I had the opportunity to spend time at many remote islands that were over 100nm away from the mainland, islands with no electricity or Wi-Fi, islands I don’t even know the names of. As always, I met many amazing islanders who never hesitated to show me around.”

Wong was heading towards Papua New Guinea, where he planned to stock up on fuel and food, but his Raymarine auto-pilot broke while still in Indonesian waters. Seeking a harbour, he was sent away as lockdown had just begun.

As he neared PNG, his family informed him that it had also closed its borders. Soon, all the South Pacific islands were in lockdown. He continued east to remote Tuvalu, where he couldn’t land but was

allowed to buy food and fuel, using his rubber dinghy on a line to make the exchange at sea.

In Tuvalu, Wong was able to buy food from local authorities

As if things weren’t tough enough for Wong, strong winds from Cyclone Harold a full 500nm away led to Ximula III hitting coral and damaging a propeller. Back home, his family contacted Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which tried to secure a place for him to dock in Fiji.

“My family were very worried when borders started closing and I was facing trouble, being chased out of islands where I was trying to seek shelter,” he says. “I constantly kept them updated on my location and status whenever I had some data connection, but it was still a scary situation when things were breaking down and I could not find shelter to fix these issues.”

FINDING FRIENDS IN FIJI

Good news finally arrived when he was informed that he would be allowed into Fiji if he passed a Covid test, which he was confident of passing after spending three months at sea and two months completely alone.

Wong, who has been in Fiji since the end of April 2020, wants to continue exploring the Asia-Pacific

“We’re still very thankful to our Singapore Government for responding to our call for help and reaching out to various countries to allow me entry. The wait was stressful, but we managed to get special approval from Fiji, considering the good relationship both countries have and the desperate condition I was in,” Wong says.

“We’re also immensely grateful to the Fiji Rescue Coordination Center for taking over the whole situation. They monitored my location, communicated with my family and provided them with updates, and eventually towed me out of the strong winds and currents to safe harbour. They were super professional and helpful.”

Due to the media coverage, Wong was contacted by and met many international sailors and fellow Singaporeans based in Fiji, where he has made himself at home, living on Ximula III.

“On my journey, I’ve met and been inspired by many Singaporean couples or families who live on the water and many international sailors who have sailed around the world,” he says. “There’s an amazing sailing community here in Fiji and I’ve made many friends from many different countries.”

Leopard 50, sailing, catamaran, TC Wong, Wong Tet Choong, Minqi Wong, Ximula, Sail, Fiji, Tuvalu, Singapore, Indonesia, Port Denarau Marina

Wong will continue his South Pacific journey on Ximula III once borders open

Wong has also had ongoing support from Leopard, which continues to advise on repairs and offer help on his travels, having also assisted with parts and spares before he set off.

Once borders open, Wong still plans to use Fiji as his base as he resumes his journey around the South Pacific before eventually sailing back to Singapore and stopping at islands he visited on his outward leg. As of now, Wong doesn’t harbour any dreams of crossing the Pacific or travelling around the world.

“I have not even covered the Philippines, which has over 7,000 islands, so I believe Southeast Asia and the South Pacific are enough to keep me excited for at least 10 more years.”

The Macallan has launched Tales of The Macallan Volume I, the first in a new series of rare single malt Scotch whiskies.

The new series is a nod to The Macallan pioneers and their legacy of whisky-making, and Volume I pays homage to Captain John Grant. In 1700, Grant realised the potential of Easter Elchies Estate, which has been the home of The Macallan Distillery since 1824.

Tales of The Macallan Volume I

Crafted by Lead Whisky Maker Sarah Burgess, Tales of The Macallan Volume I is a single malt whisky distilled in 1950 and bottled in 2021. According to Burgess, the rare and exclusive whisky extends notes of wood spices, sweet wood smoke and antique oak, complemented by hints of ripe fruits and spices.

Tales of The Macallan Volume I also comes in a package that befits its distinguished status. The whisky is encased in a handcrafted crystal decanter, concealed in an Almanac book that recounts Captain John Grant’s remarkable story.

For the decanter, The Macallan collaborated with a long-standing partner and master French crystal maker Lalique. The exquisite glasswork is etched with an illustration done by renowned artist Andrew Davidson. It also features a bespoke transit stopper by artisan craftsmen J.C. Ribiero.

The book for Tales of The Macallan Volume I was created by traditional London-based bookbinders, Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf. The firm specialises in fine binding, restoration, and conservation of books. The Tales of The Macallan Volume I book is handcrafted with luxurious leather and 24 ct gold leaf.

As expected, Tales of The Macallan Volume I is highly limited, with only 350 decanters available worldwide. It carries a retail price of S$107,600 (US$80,147).

“Tales of The Macallan tells of remarkable individuals and an exceptional spirit, a story of The Macallan’s incredible pioneers,” Lead Whisky Maker Sarah Burgess said in a release. “Each of these people left their mark on The Macallan with their unique contribution and legacy alive in our brand’s DNA and in every drop of our whisky to this day.”

The Ferretti Group brand premiered its spectacular, widebody WHY200 at the Cannes Yachting Festival, with sea trials showing the impressive performance of an 88ft 8in yacht with a 25ft 2in beam, volume of 200GT and sub-24m load-line length.

Wally, WHY200, 200GT, beam, Luca Bassani, Cannes Yachting Festival, volumeThe first Wally WHY200 has a top speed of 23 knots

Wally debuted its WHY200 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, where the brand’s first full widebody model was among the most striking new yachts on display.

The first in the brand’s new Wally Hybrid Yacht (WHY) series – ‘hybrid’ representing its combination of design concepts, not propulsion options – the WHY200 has an astonishing volume of 200GT despite being just 88ft 8in in length and classed with a sub-24m load line length.

The volume is due to a huge beam of 25ft 2in (7.66m) and a full widebody design throughout the main deck, which enables the yacht to offer far larger interior spaces than even other large-volume builds from competitors. As Wally states: ‘The WHY200 is rewriting the rules to make volume the most important gauge of a yacht.’

The 88ft 8in motor yacht has an enormous beam of 25ft 2in (7.6m)

Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and Chief Designer, designed the WHY200 with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, Laurent Giles for naval architecture and A. Vallicelli & C. for interior design.

The WHY200 offers the volumes of a much larger displacement yacht on a semi-displacement hull, which provides a top speed of 23 knots while maintaining horizontal trim with four 1,000hp Volvo Penta D13 IPS1350 engines, as fitted on the first hull.

The hull has been specifically developed and tank tested to increase efficiency while cutting through the waves with no slamming and little pitching, like all Wally hulls. The wide beam combined with the zero-speed fin stabilisers and optional twin Seakeeper gyros provide stability under way and at anchor.

Wally, WHY200, 200GT, beam, Luca Bassani, Cannes Yachting Festival, volumeThe main-deck owner’s suite provides remarkable views

The distinctive exterior features a vertical, glazed bow measuring 4.7m (15ft 5in) in height that’s designed to cut through waves and increase seaworthiness like working explorer vessels. The bow end of the main deck houses a 400sqft master suite, which has a forward-facing bed and uninterrupted 270-degree views. The lower deck can house either three or four guest cabins.

A spectacular one-piece laminated carbon staircase connects the three decks including to the eye-catching upper deck, which has a futuristic glass-and-carbon dome and an extended, structural top with no supporting pillars.

Wally, WHY200, 200GT, beam, Luca Bassani, Cannes Yachting Festival, volumeThe fold-down sides provide access to the two garages

The covered aft main deck leads to the transformer swim platform via central stairways. Either side, under large sunpads, are two garages able to store a 4.15m jet tender to starboard and a jet-ski to port as well as a Seabob, paddleboard and other water toys.

The hydraulic fold-down bulwarks or garage doors then double as a beach club and provide access to the sea on three sides, expanding the beam of the yacht to 36ft (11m) and enlarging the connected beach club area to 350sqft (32sqm).

After staging the world premieres of the Azimut 53 and 68 – along with its flagship Grand Trideck – at last week’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the Italian builder’s display at the Genoa International Boat Show (September 16-21) includes the two newest models from its Flybridge Collection.

Alberto Mancini designed both the Azimut 53 and 68, having designed the 78 Flybridge launched in 2019. The 53 was launched earlier in the year and the first unit in Asia is in Hong Kong. The 68 is a more recent launch and features an interior by Achille Salvagni with the option of three main-deck layouts, with either galley aft, forward and open or forward and enclosed.

Ferretti Group’s other models on display include the Ferretti Yachts 670 and 720 flybridge yachts, Custom Line Navetta 30 and the 48wallytenderX.

The builder’s other models comprise the SL78 and SL86, also from the planing range, the SD96 and SD126 from the semi-displacement line and the SX76, SX88 and SX112 from the iconic crossover series.

Sister brand Bluegame is staging the Italian premiere of the BG72 after its global debut at Cannes, along with the BGX60, BGX70 and BG42. The four boats will be exhibited on the Bluegame quay alongside Sanlorenzo’s SX yachts, providing a natural link as the BGX models and BG72 effectively offer the SX concept in smaller models.
