Fairline will stage the show debut of its new flagship Squadron 68 at this year’s nine-day Southampton International Boat Show from September 16-25.

The upgraded Squadron 68 includes a subtly revised exterior, new sleek hardtop and new interior design and recently debuted in Asia in Pattaya through regional dealer Simpson Marine, although the model’s official world premiere will be held at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11.

Fairline has upgraded its flagship Squadron 68

Fairline’s F//Line 33 Outboard will also make its show debut at the Southampton show, having been unveiled indoors at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2020. The Outboard version features the ‘Ascender’ bathing platform, which surrounds the outboard engines, lowers to form steps to the water when submerged or raises to act as a passarelle, allowing the propellers to be raised clear of the water.

The builder’s line-up at the show will also include Targa 45 Open and GT models, the Targa 50 GT and Squadron 50.

Paul Grys, CEO of Fairline, said: “We’re excited to return to Southampton International Boat Show this year with two show debuts. The F//Line 33 Outboard is an exciting new addition to the F//Line range and is the perfect choice for clients to be introduced to the Fairline lifestyle, as we continue to expand our global customer base.

“We’ve taken onboard feedback from customers to further improve the Squadron 68, and are confident buyers will fall in love with it as much as we have. The response we’ve had for our latest models has been excellent and we continue to invest in new products and improve existing lines to ensure excitement grows with what Fairline has to offer. We’ve got an exciting period ahead of us.”

English football icon David Beckham and Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino added stardust to Riva’s 180th anniversary gala in Venice – and even starred in a short film that debuted during the glamorous evening at Gran Teatro La Fenice, where Dolce & Gabbana co-founder Domenico Dolce was also among guests.

Beckham, Favino and Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc all appeared in Riva The Persuaders!, which had its world premiere during the exclusive Venice event, which celebrated the story of the first 180 years of one of the yachting world’s most famous brands.

Riva The Persuaders! was shot on the coast spanning Italy and France’s Côte d’Azur including Monaco, and was produced by Armando Testa Studios. It was inspired by the early 1970s action-comedy TV series, The Persuaders!, starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.

The gala event also marked the debut of the Riva Anniversario, which was unveiled on a floating platform on Venice’s Grand Canal in front of the Riva Lounge at the Gritti Palace.

Produced in a special limited edition of just 18 boats, the Anniversario was designed to celebrate Riva’s 180th anniversary and pay tribute to the legendary Aquarama, which turns 60 this year and features in a fine art book published for the occasion by Assouline.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, said: “This was the night of Riva’s 180th anniversary and of a thousand emotions for enthusiasts of the brand and its unique boats. We chose Venice and La Fenice because they are unique places in the world and, like us, they live in magical harmony with the water, art and beauty.

“My thanks go to David Beckham, Pierfrancesco Favino and Charles Leclerc, who have shown their friendship towards Riva by contributing to a spectacular short film, one of those miracles that happen when champions are involved.

“I am also honoured to introduce to the world the Anniversario, an iconic new boat, for very few lucky owners, and another masterpiece of outstanding elegance. Best wishes to Riva as it starts to write boating history for the next 180 years.”

Favino also appeared in the short film Riva in the Movie (click for article), which was released in 2020 and celebrated the Ferretti Group’s brand’s connection to cinema in tandem with a 300-page book.

As part of MYS’s three-year development programme, this year’s edition will include a new exhibition area dedicated to sustainable yachting solutions.

A new Sustainability Hub will be added to the 2022 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show, which will be held from September 28-October 1 and mark the second edition during a three-year development programme ‘to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients’.

The new exhibition area is for companies specialising in technology aimed at reducing superyachts’ environmental footprint and will be located on 200sqm in Darse Sud, the tent dedicated to nautical equipment and technology.

The Sustainability Hub is the latest green initiative of a show that joined the Carbon Neutral programme in 2005 and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2010 to support eco-friendly projects.

Monaco Yacht Show, Sustainability Hub, Darse Sud, Carbon Neutral, superyacht, development programme, Gaëlle Tallarida, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Water Revolution Foundation, Robert Van Tol

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of MYS, said: “Might I remind you that the yachting industry had barely started taking on a ‘green attitude’ at the time. Our pioneering approach to sustainability in organising the Monaco Yacht Show began 18 years ago and now extends to a new dedicated exhibition, the Sustainability Hub, which was a logical next step for the show.

“This brand-new area dedicated to eco-friendly yachting alternatives is part of our sustainability programme, which is set to be extended to the logistics and layout of the entire show here in the port of Monaco. We intend to provide support to all those involved – exhibitors, service providers and visitors alike – while exploring concrete solutions to environmental problems.”

The show is collaborating with the Water Revolution Foundation to select companies eligible for the Sustainability Hub, which is ‘an incubator for companies that provide innovative or tried-and-true eco-friendly solutions, as well as for budding start-ups working on sustainable alternatives that fit in with the yachting world’, according to show organisers.

Monaco Yacht Show, Sustainability Hub, Darse Sud, Carbon Neutral, superyacht, development programme, Gaëlle Tallarida, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Water Revolution Foundation, Robert Van Tol

Robert Van Tol, Executive Director of the Water Revolution Foundation: “The creation of the Sustainability Hub is a crucial achievement. The Monaco Yacht Show has once again consolidated its leading position in the field, while highlighting the Water Revolution Foundation’s expertise in terms of sustainability.

“Thus, the show’s new exhibition area is designed to showcase forms of technology that will bring concrete improvements to the world of yachting. We are making every effort to find, verify, promote and reward sustainable solutions, while encouraging their use and bringing about much-needed change.”

As part of the show’s ongoing development programme, organisers announced other changes last week (click for article) include the relocation of the Sailing Yacht Area to Quai l’Hirondelle on the inner side of Port Hercule and a tripling of the size of the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, both themed areas introduced last year.

The Monaco Yacht Show features land and water exhibition areas and typically attracts over 450 exhibitors and 100 superyachts including about 40 new models.

Organisers have announced changes to the three new themed areas introduced last year as part of a three-year ‘seducation’ revamp of the superyacht spectacle.

The 2022 Monaco Show will be held from September 28-October 1

The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub will triple in size and include a 100sqm upstairs conference area for the 2022 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show from September 28-October 1 (Wednesday-Saturday).

The design hub was among three new exhibition areas launched in 2021 as the organisers began a three-year revamp to better immerse visitors in the world of superyachting.

This year, the Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle on the inner side of Port Hercule, while the Dockside Area will also be upgraded. The Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and a wide range of services related to the world of yachting, so visitors can meet brokers, shipyards and designers.

Other themed areas include Parvis Piscine for yacht interior design and decoration companies; Upper Deck Lounge for luxury products and services; Quai Antoine 1er for yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes; Darse Sud tent for equipment manufacturers and yachting services; and Quai Albert 1er tent for yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service companies.

The themed exhibition areas have been redistributed for 2022, ‘making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project’.

Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of the Monaco Yacht Show, said: “The Monaco Yacht Show made its grand return to the international event scene in 2021, sporting a three-year development programme with a clearly stated goal: to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients.”

The three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients through education and seduction, described as ‘seducation’ by organisers. The new Sapphire Experience offers concierge services, such as organising yacht visits hand-in-hand with exhibitors, as well as a range of other VIP activities and services throughout the show.

The first day of the show will be invitation-only, with private clients holding ‘Discover’ passes and their parties (‘Advise’ passes) granted privileged access to the Dockside Area while the other areas will be open to all passes. From Thursday to Saturday, the Dockside Area will be open to all visitors. The show typically attracts 100-plus superyachts with an average length of 50m.

The four-day show will again be preceded by the Monaco Yacht Summit, which will be held at the Monaco Yacht Club on Tuesday, September 27. The event is for experienced yacht owners and charterers, and addresses practical questions on the topics of yacht chartering, buying and building.

Darren Oh and Teo Joo Leng of SUTL Enterprise, and James Roy and Jonathan Sit of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove receive the Platinum award in Australia

ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore has become the first facility in Southeast Asia to be awarded Platinum Gold Anchor status by the Australia-based Marina Industries Association (MIA). The 270-berth marina received the new accreditation following a S$5 million upgrade and reconfiguration completed last year, as profiled in YACHT STYLE Issue 61 (click for article).

MIA President Andrew Chapman presented the award in front of over 250 industry members during the Marinas22 International Conference and Trade Exhibition Gala Dinner at the JW Marriott Gold Coast in Australia.

Jonathan Sit, General Manager of ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, and Director of Marina James Roy received the award along with Teo Joo Leng and Darren Oh, Group General Manager and General Manager (Business Development) respectively of SUTL Enterprise, which owns the ONE°15 Marina network.

Sit said: “ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is honoured to be the first Platinum Gold Anchor marina in Southeast Asia. With a focus on service, community and environment, we are constantly striving to improve and attain excellence in these areas. We hope to replicate the same standard across all ONE°15 Marina properties globally.”

The marina completed its US$5 million upgrade and reconfiguration in 2021

Roy added: “We’re committed to providing a great berthing experience for all boaters and envision to be the superyacht hub of the region. To this end, the marina has taken a proactive step to reconfigure the marina to accommodate more superyachts and upgrade our facilities to match the power and infrastructure demands of the industry in the near future.

“The Platinum Gold Anchor award is a remarkable achievement and a great encouragement for us to continue delivering the best service standards.”

Like hotel star ratings, the Gold Anchor programme provides boat owners and marina users with an easy reference system, with Platinum as the highest accolade. To achieve Platinum status, a marina must score 95 per cent after an extensive assessment of 86 criteria that include an anonymous customer survey conducted to further ensure its services. ONE°15 Marina was applauded for its policies, planning and procedures, customer service and care for the environment.

Suzanne Davies, CEO of MIA, said: “ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove has been a 5 Gold Anchor Marina for many years, but the recent marina upgrades and the integrated services offered through the hotel and hospitality areas make it a worthy Platinum recipient and we are very proud to make the award.”

Construction has begun on hull one of the Amels 80, with the steel cutting of the all-new Limited Editions build held at Damen Yachting’s Galati hull building facility, located on the Danube river in eastern Romania.

Romke van der Linde, Project Manager of the first Amels 80 (8001), said: “For all of us at Damen Yachting, the steel cutting of the first Amels 80 is a really significant milestone. It represents the first stage of the build and the start of this new design being transformed into reality. The Amels 80 is a very exciting project to be part of and we are all looking forward to seeing her through the build journey and watch as this new Amels Limited Editions comes to life.”

Over 40 Limited Editions have been delivered to date and the keel laying is the next build milestone for the first Amels 80, which is available for delivery in 2025.

The 261ft megayacht was announced earlier this year in an online launch (click for article), which followed two years of detailed design and engineering by Damen Yachting’s naval architects. Espen Øino designed the exterior of the yacht, which will include sustainable materials and hybrid technology, and be able to accommodate 14 guests and staff as well as 21 crew.

Øino designed the exterior of the Amels 80

“It turned out to be a very holistic design in the sense that everything seems to be right, starting with a very good layout,” said Øino, who took part the model’s online launch. “It’s a very clear and logical GA and I think we’ve managed to reflect that in the exterior design with relatively simple lines. Simplicity in design does stand the test of time well and I like to think it will be the case here.“

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design handled the interiors, with the Dutch studio enabling the layout to accommodate personalised, loose furniture and decorative elements.

Paul Costerus, Sinot’s Lead Designer and who also participated in the online launch, said: “It’s a very neutral and natural palette. Materials are treated in such a way that the natural characteristics remain as pure as possible. The style is distinctive and yet still allows plenty of room for owners to customise and add their personal style.”

Solar-powered and solar-assisted models are helping grow the appeal of catamarans, while monohull yacht builders are also entering the powercat sector, as revealed in the fourth and final part of the ‘Multihulls Power’ feature in Yacht Style Issue 65.

The Cora Cat 48 by PMG Shipyard offers a proven platform and a huge flybridge

In Thailand, PMG Shipyard’s models include the new Cora Cat 48, which can be built to a range of certifications from Europe’s CE to UK-based Lloyd’s and Australia’s AMSA. Features include a large flybridge with the yacht’s primary helm station, while a second helm with joystick and screen can be added in the saloon upon request.

Built on a fast displacement hull, the current design has evolved to allow a light-filled interior and more space. The expanded main-deck saloon features larger windows, while a flat foredeck covered in sun pads allows for larger forward cabins.

The standard layout of the Cora Cat 48 includes a large aft cockpit for alfresco dining and a bar counter that connects with the aft galley, while the saloon can benefit from extra space if a lower helm is not fitted. Accommodation options include a four-cabin layout featuring forward cabins with window-facing beds, or a three-cabin layout with bespoke master suite in the port hull. The Cora Cat 48 will be distributed by Multihull Solutions and the first model will be available to view in mid-2023.

The Cora Cat 48 has a large flybridge

Owned by Philippe Guenat, the 20,800sqm PMG Shipyard has expertise in the field of solar technology and offers solar-assisted designs that can power onboard systems including air conditioning without use of a generator, while hybrid or electric propulsion can also be included on certain models.

“Our catamarans are built for and used in the Asia-Pacific region, so all our systems must be extremely reliable as there may not be marinas every 20nm if repairs are needed,” Guenat says.

“For the same reason, we like to have diesel engines for power and security, although we have long experience with hybrid and electric power and propulsion. Our catamarans are designed for long voyages in sometimes rough seas, so safety is our priority.”

Guenat also stresses that PMG Shipyard’s range of powercats don’t use balsa in the core but vinyl ester, which is extremely resistant to osmosis. Furthermore, the vinyl ester is insulated from the hull by half an inch of airspace, ensuring it always stays dry.

The Swiss believes another attraction of its powercats is the exceptional value for money due to building in a country with lower labour costs. Its location east of U-Tapao Rayong Pattaya International Airport also enables Asia-based buyers to easily visit the shipyard during construction.

“We’ve had clients who visit several times a year and they feel more connected to the project and can work closely on customising the boat.”

SILENT EXPANSION

Silent-Yachts has launched units of the Silent 60 in forward master (above) and front exit versions

Since 2019, PMG Shipyard has also doubled as one of the production facilities for the Silent 60, the smallest model in Austrian-owned Silent-Yachts’ current range of solar-electric catamarans, which succeed the 64 and 55 production models.

In Italy, Silent-Yachts builds the Silent 60 and 80 series at its Adriatic coast shipyard in Fano, which has 22,000sqm of covered facilities plus a similar amount of outdoor space. Silent cats are also being built in Turkey following a recent partnership with the VisionF shipyard, as the companies collaborate on the Silent VisionF82, an upcoming solar-assisted hybrid version of the existing VisionF 80.

The first unit of the Silent 60 was launched in Thailand last year before heading to Europe, while recent launches include the model’s first Front Exit version, which features a saloon door to the foredeck instead of a full-beam owner’s cabin forward on the main deck.

The Silent 62 3-Deck offers a large flybridge in open (above) or enclosed designs

Most subsequent orders for the ‘60 series’ have been for the Silent 62 3-Deck, which features longer transoms and a much larger flybridge that can be open or partially enclosed. In addition, the model’s design has evolved and now includes a raised cockpit plate that creates flush flooring from the cockpit through the main-deck interior, instead of the slightly raised lounge seen on the initial units.

As well as less steps from the cockpit up to the side decks, the new design has created cabins with more headroom and new storage space under the cockpit for the likes of a tender, water toys or even a Laser sailboat.

Michael Köhler, founder and CEO of Silent-Yachts, says he has also applied these improvements to the Silent 80, with the first unit set to be launched later this year, potentially in time for the Cannes Yachting Festival.

New hulls of the 60 and 62 3-Deck will feature flush flooring

“We’ve had great feedback on the first units of the Silent 60 and even a video of some people entering the interior and saying, ‘I wouldn’t have expected that,’ because they were surprised a 60-footer could be so big inside,” says Köhler, who launched his Solarwave 46 solar-electric catamaran in 2009, after years of testing solar-powered propulsion.

“However, I’m happy to change the design of boats, so they’re continually being upgraded, without looking at the financial consequences. If we can improve something, we change it on the next units. We’re continually optimising the design through construction.”

SOLAR APPEAL EXPANDS

Founded in 2020, Alva is among new brands in the solar-electric catamaran sector and has announced sales of seven units of its Ocean Eco 60 and an Ocean Eco 90 EX. The company recently revealed designs for the Ocean Eco 60 Coupé, a cruiser model.

Alva’s current production is focused on the first units of the Ocean Eco 60

The German-owned company builds in Turkey’s Antalya Free Zone and plans to debut the first Ocean Eco 60 at the 2023 Palma International Boat Show then the Ocean ECO 90 EX at the Cannes Yachting Festival later in the year.

“Antalya is one of the best shipbuilding hubs in the world and the shipbuilding culture is heavily focused on craftsmanship,” says Milan Henn, Head of Design. “We can take advantage of the amazing infrastructure and facilities here to maximise our series yacht production.”

Alva’s catamarans feature a distinctive design including extensions from the flybridge sides that join the bow corners, creating a semi-protected foredeck.

The German-owned brand is also offering a Coupé version

“The exterior design is heavily influenced by automotive trends and underlines futuristic technology,” Henn says. “Breaking yachting conventions is very much what we try to do with the design of our yachts, and this can be seen in the very disruptive exterior.”

MONOHULL BRANDS COMING

Meanwhile, Prestige is the first of the world’s major monohull motor yacht builders to move into the power catamaran sector with its M-Line series. At Cannes in September, the French builder will stage the world premiere of the M48, a 48ft 6in powercat that doesn’t compete with fellow Groupe Beneteau builder Lagoon, which is focused on larger models with its Sixty 7 and Seventy 8.

The M48 is designed by Italy’s Garroni Design – Prestige’s long-time collaborator – and features naval architecture by Frenchman Philippe Briand. Tall and slim, it offers 1,400sqft of living space yet has a beam of just 19ft 8in, which is over 2ft wider than the brand’s flagship X70 monohull but much thinner than similar-length or slightly shorter powercats on the market.

Prestige is entering the powercat sector with the M48, to debut at Cannes

Innovative features include a full-beam accommodation on the lower deck, which can have a full-width master suite or two cabins forward as well as two cabins side by side midships, each with raised window-facing beds. Other notable features include an aft cockpit with facing L-shaped Roda sofas and tables separated down the centreline, as well as a foredeck with an aft-facing sofa in the bow.

Fitted with twin 325hp Volvo D4s, the M48 is expected to have a top speed of 20 knots, fuel consumption of 80 litres per hour at 17 knots and a range of 600nm at eight knots.

And more monohull brands are coming. Bluegame, Sanlorenzo’s sister company, announced at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival that it would be entering the powercat market. More recently, it revealed details of the BGM75, which will debut an exclusive Volvo hybrid powertrain.

Zuccon International Project and Studio Lissoni, long-time collaborators with Sanlorenzo, designed the exterior and interior respectively, while Briand handled the naval architecture of a yacht featuring a full sandwich-infused hull and carbon-reinforced hull and decks.

As the number of powercat owners increase, so will the number of builders in this market. Keep an eye out, as there are more to come.
